I keep seeing people bitching about "uwu when I say 'from the river to the sea' people say I'm calling for geeenocide! They say I'm antisemitic!" and like.
Maybe. instead of clinging to a phrase that a bunch of white leftists have co-opted because they think it sounds nice. And digging your little immature heels in. You should LISTEN when people tell you that yes. The phrase's FUCKING ORIGIN was a call for the eradication of Jews from the area known as Israel and Palestine. That NO, you cannot divorce it from those roots. YES, it IS still used to mean that TO THIS DAMN DAY.
And look. Maybe you DON'T think that Israelis should all be killed and/or exiled from Israel and Palestine. Maybe you DON'T think that the genocide of an entire people is the solution. Maybe you DON'T hate Jews and want all of us dead. And if that's the case? Great!
But how the FUCK are we supposed to tell the difference when you are using the EXACT same phrase as countless people who DO want those things. People who DO hate Jews, who ARE supportive of organizations that want to commit violence, people who SUPPORT what happened on October 7th?
When people tell you "hey, this phrase means something else, it has ALWAYS come from those roots, and using it is NOT OKAY because it is STILL used as a rallying cry for violence against Israelis and Jews worldwide", the way to react? Is NOT to fucking double down and use it.
Because that? DOES make you an antisemite. And if I see you using that phrase? Then I MUST assume that at best, you do not know what it means and have SOMEHOW avoided the countless Jews and non-Jews I have seen talking about it, or at WORST you actively hate me and want me and every single one of my people dead.
And frankly? You are not worth that risk to interact with.
Stop saying it. There are SO many ways to support Palestine, the Palestinian people, and their fight for rights, that do not involve spouting genocidal, antisemitic rhetoric. it is NOT HARD.
But apparently, some of y'all are insistent on being racist.

OTW Candidate Anh P.
I had a very long and interesting discussion with OTW-board candidate Anh P.
They tracked me down because they wanted to talk about how @squidgiepdx and I got otw-a working (for SquidgeWorld Archive and Ad Astra Fanfiction) and what we might suggest to make otw-archive more easily deployable to other, independent archives.  What might make it easier to use.  It was a really productive conversation, too, enough that Walter and I have decided to start tackling the setup documentation from the outside to see if we can’t make it as easy as possible for others to deploy otw-archive, and to test a few things we think might make it more not-OTW userfriendly.  (Like changing the hard-coding of OTW/AO3 to something that can be configured from the local.yml file.)
Anh P. is Vietnamese, very aware of the situation re: racism, AI, and the consequences of PAC being overridden.  They’ve been a volunteer for both Fanlore and Open Doors and have been for long enough to be able to run for board, but not so long that they’re completely assimilated.  They also have deep connections to the pan-Asian fan communities, including those currently marginalized by OTW’s present administrative structures.
Mostly, I'm impressed as hell that they not only wanted to talk to two people who have definite Opinions on OTW, but were genuinely and actively seeking our thoughts, good or bad, about what we would suggest to make the software more easily used by others seeking to do the same as we did.
I know I don't have a real stake in the debate over racism, being white and American and unable to understand the lived experiences of those who suffer it both in everyday life and in fandom, but they made excellent points about how decentralizing fandom and otherwise helping people be able to curate their own, inclusive spaces with their own rules might help with that.
They showed me a script a Chinese user made which is frankly brilliant to translate the AO3 Work posting page, and which could easily be translated to other languages, it’s so intuitive.
The part that sent my eyebrows up was their desire to use OTW's platform to help support independent fan archives in order to keep them afloat, rather than just let them sink and import them to AO3 via Open Doors, including not-Anglosphere archives and communities.
So, take it as you will, but I was very impressed someone was doing some of the harder legwork and seeking outside opinions, especially opinions that aren’t necessarily OTW-friendly, and with an eye towards actual measurable hard action that can be taken to start addressing some of the problems OTW is having right now.

OTW Candidate Q&As
There’s some interesting stuff in there, but the upshot of this post is that only two of the candidates mentioned supporting a decentralization of fandom, and only one of those candidates actually reached out to Walter and I to ask how we got otw-archive running and the effort it took.
Anh P. still remains the best, in my opinion, for having a genuinely balanced view of not only what problems OTW is facing, but also in how to look into fixing those.  They also go into their thought processes as to how and why they’re thinking the way they are without coming across as some kind of weird HR Generalist, which can’t be said for some of the candidates.
I appreciate the shoutout, but more than that, I absolutely appreciate that they took the time to listen and discuss ways to decentralize fandom and make it so that the Organization for Transformative Works is actually -- get this -- for more than just this one archive and one wiki.  That they collaborated with Walter and I to do something about the problem, even before being elected, because they’re committed to fandom (and diversity in fandom) and want OTW to be for fandom.
Which is not the feeling I got from almost all of the other candidates.  Kathryn S. was the only other one discussing supporting other, indie archives (and gave Walter and I a shout out as well), but didn’t contact us directly.
(Even though it’s frankly embarrassingly easy to get ahold of us, and we also are two incredibly geeky people who would love to talk about our archives and the love behind them that had us putting in this work and giving hours and hours of time to it.)
Anyway, you can read all of the statements here.  In terms of who I am willing to personally vote for, Anh is still number one contender.  They not only impressed me when they reached out, their answers are balanced and detailed and explained.
Second might be Kathryn.
The rest need to stop circling the wagons around AO3 as if somehow having a giant monopoly on fandom, and borg-assimilating struggling archives before offering them any help staying alive, is a good thing.  OTW was never meant to be just AO3.  I remember when it started.  A couple of those candidates are frankly embarrassing in their answers; AO3 is never gonna love you back, you couple I’m talking about, so maybe stop worshipping the golden idol.
There ya have it.  Ad Astra’s founder and archivist is officially endorsing Anh P. now for OTW Board.  And if you want to talk about how Walter and I did it (and how we want to help others to!), you know, we’re right here.
My two cents to rub together, for what they’re worth.  Thanks.
