2. How did you get the idea to write this? [Based on the other questions, I'm gonna talk about my urban fantasy novel here] As best as I can remember, the inspiration for Cloy came from 1) the part in Bandstand where Julia says "I don't need saving!" and Donny says "yeah, well maybe I do" and 2) Needtobreathe's song "Banks" and 3) the ending of Jessica Day George's Dragon Slippers, and 4) a couple random pinterest pins including an animated gif of a human!Starscream from Transformers I guess?? and something from the first season of Nikita??, and lots of stuff I had no pre-existing context for and hodgepodged together. 😂
6. Is there any specific ship you're planning to include? Ok, I don't ship much and I definitely don't write romance for the sake of it, but this story has a very important romance between the two protagonists, River and Captain. [sudden giggling over how their names basically suggest a ship anyways] Anyways, I ship them so hard, and they're so good for each other, and I put them through so much. 😭 The dynamic can definitely be found in the NTB song from the first question.

"Why am I here?” Tyler frowned. “You don’t remember.” “No, I don’t, that’s why I’m asking –” “No, that’s what I meant. You’re here because you don’t remember. You were attacked. You lost some of your memory. You were awake when Professor Lewis brought you here… you don’t remember that either?” Tyler looked as though he were concentrating on Captain’s answer, as if it were suddenly not a casual check-up, but a report he had to give. Captain frowned, thinking hard. “I think…" Something itched at the back of his mind. “Mathen brought me here after… after the hospital?” Tyler grinned, relaxing a little. “Yeah, the hospital.” “But why was I…” Captain looked down at his arms and suddenly noticed the skin was scraped and raw. A wide bandage had been wrapped around his left forearm and horrifying purple bruises completely encircled both of his wrists. He sat down hard on the bed. “What…” Fear stabbed at his gut, twisting his insides. He thought he was going to throw up. “Where did…” He looked back up at Tyler, who was staring at the marks as well, but shook himself and met Captain’s gaze. “I don’t understand.” Tyler's brow furrowed with concern. “I’m going to call Professor Mathen and tell him you’re awake. Can I leave you here, you’re alright for a minute?” He seemed afraid Captain might do something unpredictable and insane if he left him alone. Captain shook his head slowly. “Please, go call him. Is there anyone else here?” “No, sir. Just us. I’ll be right back.” And, with that, Tyler turned and sprinted off, his hand already going to his pocket to dig out a cell phone before he was even out of view of the door, which he left cracked open. The electric light of the hall was comforting and Captain appreciated Tyler’s thoughtfulness, or perhaps absentmindedness, for leaving the door open. He looked down at his hands again, trying to comprehend what had happened and why he couldn’t remember. Panic escaped his lungs in a sharp exhale, immediately forcing him to breathe in again - a sort of desperate gasp to fill his body with oxygen again. The gasp, the intake of fresh sweet air, brought a stab of recollection to him and if he hadn’t already been sitting down he would have staggered under its blow. It wasn’t a memory exactly, but like the feeling of realizing after a long night of troubled sleep, that all the trouble had been because of a dream. There was no memory of the dream itself, just the idea of having had the dream in the first place, and whatever he had been feeling in the dream. But whatever this was, it had not been a dream. Dreams didn't leave bruises around his wrists. You were attacked, Tyler said. Again, he thought he was going to throw up. The echo of memory passed as soon as it had come and he sat on the edge of the bed in the silent room trying to catch hold of the last thing he did remember. What had happened to him?

[I wanna say something funny and cleverly vague here but have no braincells, just gonna share the little logline/teaser/synopsis I have.] "The worlds of fae and humankind are collapsing in on themselves, as a half-fae daughter of war and the scientist assigned to test her magic must choose to save their own in the division, or lose everything together."

You look out of the plane window as you fly back to the UK, the urgency causing you to call in every favour to get the private flight.
It’s dark and cloudy outside, matching your mood and you try and focus on your laptop.  Clicking open the report and reading quickly, The INTERPOL office in Geneva was compromised, Kent was August’s man.  After you left the bank’s offices the next group to use the room took advantage of the freshly brewed pot of coffee, and promptly all passed out after being drugged.  That is how Kent captured Walter, he was partly sedated from the couple of sips of coffee he had.
You have to believe that Walter will be ok, August has nothing to gain by harming him.  Walter is the only leverage he has over you.  August is rarely anything but practical.  You know deep down it’s a simple equation.  August wants his gold and you, you want Walter safe.  August will view this as a transaction.  
If you can ensure Walter is safe, you’ll go with August, there is no other option.  
The thought makes you tremble and not in a good way, for a second you think you may have another panic attack, the familiar tightness in your chest making it hard for you to breathe.  Closing your eyes you try and concentrate on your breathing, imagining Walter’s piercing blue eyes that you focused on last time.   It's like you can actually hear his voice telling you to breathe in and out slowly, you rub your fingers together lightly, and you swear you can feel his skin under your fingertips.  Breathing deeply you catch the faint scent of his cologne on your clothes.  Mentally giving yourself a kick you focus on what matters, not missing him but getting him back.  Your hands are shaking as you try and type a last-minute secure message, not sure if anything will come from it.
You’re told that you’re approaching the airport, your phone rings, the Director.  You’ve been dodging his calls and you’re thankful you have to turn your phone off as you land.  The only chance you have is to do this alone.
You rush to the National Crime Agency offices, you just need to be alone to think.  Try and process what August’s next step will be.  You can’t afford to let your personal feelings into this fucked up situation.  It's like some bloody bad TV drama, your manipulative ex-lover has taken your current lover hostage, you’ve stolen said ex-lover’s gold and he wants you back.  Oh and don’t forget that the ex-lover wants to burn half the world and cause a total meltdown of all society.
You’re sitting in a conference room, trying to decide if you need any help with this.  You’ve already decided to do whatever August wants to make sure Walter is safe.  Your heart clenches at the thought, but you know you’d feel worse if he is harmed in any way.
It’s so unfair, but you need to accept your penance.  As long as no one you love is harmed, that will be enough.
You dig through your handbag, looking for the pouch from the vault.  You tip the contents out, two USB sticks and that bracelet.  God, you were naive back then,  You reflect on how you felt with August compared to how Walter makes you feel.  August seemed to consume you, steal your oxygen until your flame was small, almost extinguished whilst his burned all the brighter.  
Whereas Walter, it's hard to put into words how Walter makes you feel, he soothes you when you’re in danger of getting out of control, he gives you space and fuel to burn as bright as you can and you can’t imagine a life without him.  Without him, in your life, you feel like your flame will die completely.
You barely notice the tears rolling down your cheeks, dripping onto the keyboard in front of you.  Something makes you look up, you see two employees walking out together at the end of the workday.  Linking arms, you bet they are together, the way he looks at her, the way she glances at him when she thinks he’s not looking.  As he holds the door open for her, his hand lightly on her back, trailing lower until he cups her ass.  It makes you smile and you ache for Walter.
Your eyes fall back onto the USB sticks, and reluctantly you reach for them, knowing that you have to watch them.  August had told you to and it means they form some part of his twisted plan.
You put one into the laptop, just one file on it, a program, you know the protocol, it should be checked over by the experts.  But somehow you just don’t care anymore, if it gets you closer to finding Walter let August do what he wants.  You click the icon, a quick flash on the screen and it disappears. A tracking program, so he knows where you are now.  Good.
The second USB has a video on it, you start it.  You can see yourself on the small screen. 
You are bent over a small table, naked.  Your legs are bound to the table legs, making sure you are spread wide.  Your arms are secured to the floor, your body stretched.    The camera is being held by him, it moves closer and you turn your head, your makeup is ruined, running down your face.  Your lips look painfully swollen and sore.
“Angel, just once more then I’ll let you cum” his smooth voice is clear over the recording.
Your voice is hoarse from the earlier screaming, but you smile “Yes, August, please”

His ice-blue eyes are burning into you yours, your face is going red, eyes getting heavy.  He pulls out and lets go of your nose at the same time.  You cough and gasp for air, taking fast greedy breaths.  
He puts the camera down across the room, ensuring it has a perfect view of you.  He stalks behind you, his eyes glued on your bent ass and dripping pussy.

You sob and tears stream down your face, his fingers ghost lightly across the back of your thighs, he hums when he sees the goosebumps rise in response.  You hear the whistle through the air a second before feeling the impact on your thighs.  A strangled scream leaves your lips between the sobs as another stroke lands.  
You grit your teeth as you watch your humiliation on the video, you can’t remember him filming you, a sign of just how disassociated you’d become.  The sound of each stroke coming from the laptop makes you wince, the memory causing phantom feelings, pain and pleasure.  August’s favourite game, it’s a double-edged sword or two sides of the same coin. 
The pause in the sounds draws your attention back to the screen.
August is breathing heavily from the exertion of your punishment, he walks to your head and again strokes your cheek so gently.  He brings the tawse close to your face, you can smell the supple leather and the bitter tang of something metallic.  Your eyes widen in horror as you realise he’s bled you.  He carries on stroking your face.
“I had no choice Angel, you forced me, you know how dangerous I am, maybe now you’ll behave better.  I always think a lesson needs revisiting for it to really sink in.”  He brings the leather to your lips “Bite on this Angel, It’s not going to be gentle”
You slam the laptop shut.  Not wanting to watch any more of your humiliation.  You remember that weekend as if it was yesterday, the feeling as mercilessly fucked all your holes repeatedly, revelling in you begging him to stop or for more.   The punishment he gave you for using his computer is what caused you to dig deeper, his initial reaction was overkill and it made you suspicious.  He always did underestimate you, forgetting you were an agent just like him.  
Your phone rings, startling you out of your shock, a withheld number, you answer.  A voice that sends a chill through you speaks. “Angel, get the package from reception” His voice is smooth like silk, sliding over you, and your heart starts pounding 
“Where is he, you bastard” you shout down the phone and you hear him inhale sharply “he’s fine, for now.  Get the package Angel” and he hangs up.

The sobs crawl up through your body, escaping as you scream again.  Before you’ve thought about it your hand has drawn your gun and removed the safety as if he was there with you right now.   You realise that your life will never be your own as long as August is alive.  Somehow you’ve got to do what Hunt failed to do, kill August, and this time make sure he stays dead.
Running out of the building, you grab the parcel from reception, it's actually a letter, another card.  Sat in the car you open it

Briefly giving into the despair you feel, you bury your face in your hands, embracing the hopelessness you feel.  One second you miss Walter, the next you’re angry with August, the next you’re rushing to try and find him.  You’ve made bad decision after bad decision recently, maybe it’s fate’s way of paying you back for your mistakes.  Maybe you’re just not up to this, August is toying with you like a cat does a mouse.  Or more accurately pulling your strings like the puppet master he is.  You realise he’s been doing it since the first day you met him, or more accurately you’ve been letting him.  Overwhelming sadness fills you as you think about all the things you’ve given up or left behind because of what the relationship with August cost you.  
You stare at the card again, something feels familiar about the words, reaching in your bag for his other messages, you lay out the quotes and read them again. 
 “Do you believe in destiny? That even the powers of time can be altered for a single purpose? That the luckiest man who walks on this earth is the one who finds… true love?”
Repeating the words over to yourself, you can hear them in your mind being said with an eastern European accent.
“No man knows till he experiences it, what it is like to feel his own life-blood drawn away into the woman he loves.
In a flash, you’re back there, in August’s house, at the start of your relationship. He’d invited you over after training for a bite to eat.
You’re curled up in his comfy chair, a book open on your lap.  You can see him cooking the stir-fry in the kitchen, it's horribly domestic and despite trying to act cooly disinterested, you can’t keep your eyes off him.  His broad shoulders filling out his shirt perfectly, down to his narrow waist and his ass.  His perfect ass, stretching his trousers tight, his thighs, god, his thighs.  You’ve read the same page over and over, distracted by the man cooking for you.  You wonder if you’re really that lucky to have someone like August Walker interested in you.  Your eyes flit down to the now closed book in your hand, the ornate gold lettering spelling out Dracula.
You huff in surprise, the quotes are all from Dracula, either the dark gothic novel by Bram Stoker or the 90s movie based on the book.
Back then you had a minor obsession with Dracula, you recall reading the novel all the time and watching the 90s film on repeat, your comfort book and movie.
It’s been years since you’ve thought of it, like so much of you from back then, it was blocked out for your own sanity.
The engine roars to life as you gun the accelerator and peal out of the car park.  Another example of August’s games, him pulling your strings and dictating your moves.  You know exactly where August is.

The Exordium
An insight into Scott's last mission as an Air Force Captain.

Seriously, this is just my brain plotting out a Top Gun: Maverick inspired one shot with Scott for the past month and finally having some free time after Christmas in July to do it. I did my best for military terms, but definitely took some liberties as this is supposed to take place in the ~2050s. Hope y’all enjoy!

“Dagger Two, where are ya Valentine? I don’t see your position. Speed up, speed up.”
“Copy, Preacherman.”
“Maintain low altitude. I have visuals on SAMs.”
Scott peers around his shoulder, past Kronos in the WSO control seat and out the window. True to his word, Valentine swings out with a sharp increase of speed. He settles into the secondary position of a two jet attack position. Scott pushes the throttle to its max with his wingman in sight.
The mountain is coming up fast like a brick wall. Scott braces his body and shoots the F-30 up vertically, out of range of the first set of SAMs and before the second’s sensors. Kronos puffs heavy breaths behind him. It takes all of his concentration to breath in, breath out, to fight against the G’s threatening to crush his body. The oxygen can’t flow fast enough from his mask.
“Preacherman, we’ve got sight of two Whispers in the clouds. Our radar isn’t finding them.”
“Visual?” Scott asks once he catches his breath.
Kronos peers looks as far as he can around the canopy. “No radar. I can’t see ‘em either! Must be somewhere far behind us.”
“Not good. One minute, thirteen seconds inbound,” Scott informs his team.
“Smoke! I see smoke! Preacher, bank right!” Valentine’s voice cuts through the static of high altitude.
Scott takes the warning from his wingman to heart. Despite being the leader, he follows Valentine’s shouts and banks the F-30 in a tight loop.
“They’ve got lock,” Kronos shouts after smashing an array of keys. The missiles follow the direction changes almost as fast as Scott can make them. “Firing flares.”
The explosion of flares versus missiles sends a shockwave through the fighter jet. Kronos braces his forearm against the left side of the canopy to look out back. “Two Whispers inbound! First visual contact!”
Scott barks his orders like he’s more than the twenty-three years his body is. He can slip down into the mountain cliff crevasse, but Valentine and Sparrow are too far to follow. The Whispers will shoot them down before they can get to cover. “Valentine, break off! Break off!”
The second jet screams out to the right, taking one of the Whisper jets with it. But the other is trailing after Scott without a scratch. A drop off results in Scott shooting out into open air. No more Earth walls to protect him. Scott’s gripping the control stick with both hands and gasping in oxygen as he shoots up in altitude at a ninety-degree angle. The Whisper follows, unsuccessfully attempting a bullet spray. Scott pulls on the brakes, flipping the jet upside down before swopping down to get behind the Whisper jet.
The new Berezniki technology may succeed theirs, but Scott’s the best pilot of his division. And he’ll be damned if now isn’t the perfect time to prove his dogfighting skills.
“C’mon, Kronos, work your magic. Buy us some time!”
Kronos switches to a laser guided missile lock now that the enemy jet is in front. Scott doesn’t see how he does it. He never does. The jet rattles as a set of flares and machine gun bullets fire blindly out to the Whisper. It evades but doesn’t see the missile hidden by the smoke from the flares. The Berezniki jet explodes into an array of shrapnel and fire that falls beneath their wings. Scott whoops a short breath of relief.
“Enemy down. Confirmed ejection. We ain’t gonna worry about that one,” Kronos says as he taps on the canopy covering. But that means there’s still one fighter left they can’t see.
Scott’s thrown off balance as it comes down out of the clouds in pure silence. He rolls the F-30 out of the way of its guns. But before it has a chance to make a second dive at Scott and Kronos, Valentine’s F-30 launched an ambush of missiles.
“Woo boy! Second fucker down!”
“Language, fellas,” Sparrow quips. His voice is all smiles and adrenaline.
“Target thirty meters ahead. Drop bombs when you’ve got a clear shot.” Scott focuses on keeping the F-30 steady as he lowers their altitude to only 100 meters off the ground. He does a flyby and hears a short confirmation that the bombs hit the target. That’s half the battle; the other half will be Valentine and Sparrow making the finishing blow with a SEMI.
“Dagger Two, you got a lock?” Scott asks. He can’t look over his shoulder to see if his wingmen are back behind. “Dagger Two?”
“Negative, Preacherman. We’ve-”
Valentine is infuriated by a crunching sound and Sparrow’s uncharacteristically shrill voice. “Third Whisper! No tracking, visual to right twenty degrees. Valentine-”
“We’re hit! We’re hit!”
“Shit!” Scott’s instincts take over before his mind can. The Lieutenant General is not going to be happy about his actions, that’s for sure. “We’re coming, Dagger Two! Hold on!”
“Preacherman, I’ve lost sight of the Whisper again. No radar, no clear sight.” Kronos supplies. He flips switches on the paneling to his right. “Negative heat tracking. We’re fighting blind.”
That is not good news.
Scott shoves the thought in the back of his mind as he races over to cover Valentine and Sparrow. The first two didn’t show all the tricks of the Whispers. He doesn’t speak as their conversation fills the radio waves. Smoke billows out of the back of the F-30 of his wingmen.
“Engine One, on fire. Taking emergency measures!”
“No good! Extinguishers damaged in impact!”
“Fire spreading, lost control of internal combustion rods.” Valentine’s voice is tight.
“Put it out!” Scott snaps.
They’re over the heart of Bereznik’s Tempo Base. There’s a reason this mission was kept hush hush, and a reason they were briefed on the horrid doings of Tempo only after agreeing. includes learning there would be no rescue inbound should they eject. Scott talked to his four brothers last night for an hour over his allotted time. The fact the higher ups allowed it is enough reason for concern.
The jet shakes as the engine erupts. It sends a shockwave through the plane and has her tumbling out of the sky. The smoke turns to a dark black. Scott’s thrown against his seat as he reverses direction to avoid the explosion. That smoke can only mean one thing: the fire’s hit the fuel tanks. IT’s a worst case scenario for any pilot.
“We’ve gotta eject!”
“Disengage fuel pumps to line four avids. Try to limp her out!”
Scott watches the cockpit of the F-30 fill with flames at the same time the Whisper emerges from the shadows. His eyes widen in terror for his team.
“Eject, eject, eject!”
“Eject now!” Kronos throws in. The fire is spreading.
“Throw the canopy!”
“Eject, eject!”
“I’ve got smoke,” Scott says. His voice is quiet over the sound of Sparrow’s gasp as his seat launches into open air. “Kronos, we’re gonna cover ‘em.”
He dives down where Dagger Two is rapidly losing altitude. The Whisper foregoes Scott’s F-30 and approaches the ejected pilots like a hungry predator. Sparrow is desperately holding onto his chute lines as he rips his mask off. Scott whips their fighter between the Bereznik aircraft and his two men.
The missile loses sight of the broken plane and latches onto Scott’s instead.
“Fire flares!”
“Flares are out, Preacher! Launching last counter missile.”
Kronos spins around in his seat to ensure the missile is negated. “Out of missile too. We’ve got only 27 rounds of bullets left.”
Scott’s mouth stays shut in a tight line. His eyes track the Whisper screaming through the air in a loop, coming around to target their jet. They can’t just leave the two falling to their demise. But Scott sees no way out.
His choice is made for him as the F-30 lurches into a tailspin.
“What the fuck Kronos?!”
“We’ve been hit! Nothing showed up, new tech that-”
“You better use those 27 shots up real quick!” Scott screams as he attempts to pull them out of their tailspin. It’s hopeless. The right side is burned to ashes, not a single remnant of the wing left. Both engines are a sputtering mess of flames and smoke. It starts filtering back into the cockpit. There’s only so much time before their own canopy fills with the same flames that filled Dagger Two’s.
Kronos falters for purchase on the above striped handles. “I’m ejecting us!”
“You will not!”
“Preacher! We’ve got to bail!”
Scott’s not panicking. Fighter pilots don’t panic. He attempts a maneuver to reverse the polarity of their spin. It only increases the speed. Up above the Whisper aims its nose down for the best angle of machine gun bullet fire.
“Scott!”
“Eject!”
That’s all Kronos needs before he’s releasing the canopy top. The force of the wind knocks Scott’s torso down towards his knees. Kronos ejects first. Scott pulls his cord in between his legs and his head whips back as his body is pulled from the flaming wreckage. With no pilot, the F-30 crashes in a blaze alongside its sister ship.
They were close enough to the ground that the parachuted provide little drag. Scott crashes to the ground and feels the bones in his left ankle grind together. Something snaps. Kronos fares better than he does with landing. His WSO unhooks his parachute gear and runs to Scott’s side to help him.
The Whisper does a flyby. It speeds up and bypasses the pilots. The Berezniki craft fires no more and turns back towards where it came. If Scott wasn’t wearing his helmet, the supersonic blast would have ruptured his ear drums for sure.
“I saw Valentine and Sparrow up ahead. C’mon!”
“Your ankle?”
Scott tries to stand. He hesitated in his first step with his left foot. Pain shoots through his body. But the adrenaline rush masks the worst of it. “Forget about it! Go! Go, go, go, go!”
He signals to Kronos and they take off in a sprint.
“Find us a way outta here Preacherman!”
He radios in to base as they run. The soldiers may be able to triangulate their position if they’re listening in on the frequency. But they won’t get any help staying silent. Either way, Scott and his men are sitting ducks. Calling for reinforcements is their best bet at survival.
“This is Captain Tracy. Scramble standby Dagger Three and Four.”
A pause over the radio. Then static. “Negative Captain Tracy. Enemy is hostile, engaging off target.”
“Send in the A-Tidals. Lucky One is on foxtrot.”
 “Negative. Airspace is not under clearance. SAMs are currently engaged. There is no entry.”
“Requiring backup! Dagger One and Two down. Repeat, requiring backup. Dagger One and Two down!”
“Captain Tracy,” the Brigadier General’s voice is cold. Scott didn’t realize he was even in the control room. His word is law and Scott’s scared for what he has to say. “We cannot send aid. Search and rescue will be locked down until threat is neutralized.”
Search and rescue?
Scott swears.
That old bastard knew this was a suicide mission and sent them in anyways. Scott decides to do his own search and rescue, with emphasis on the rescue part.
Sparrow is the first one they find. He’s cut loose from his parachute and running desperately towards them.
“Wrong direction!” Kronos yells. He makes a sharp cutting motion with his hand parallel to his temple as Scott’s hands are tied up with his radio. The look on Sparrow’s face is worthy of Scott’s pity.
“You got Valentine with you?”
“No clue where he’s at!” Sparrow gasps between breaths.
A round of air strike bombs rings out where Scott and Kronos crashed. Falling bombs fill the air with a backdrop of a beautiful blue sky. The trio is just out of blast range. For now.
Running in the direction opposite of Sparrow proves successful. Valentine is on the ground, one hand around his leg. His parachute is tangled up in the evergreen trees above.
“Valentine!”
The man garbled out some words. Scott catches none of them. He removed the lieutenant’s hands from his leg. They’re bloodied. Scott examines his leg and it’s not a promising one. One of the bones of his leg has ripped through the skin. A gash in his flight suit from landing shows the whole gory scene.
Kronos is right by his side. “It’s no good, the bone’s all stuck out. He’s immobile.”
“You didn’t… have to come back for me… Cap’n…” Valentine gets out with grit.
“Yes we did. Don’t be stupid,” Scott retorts. Scott points out the only two living humans nearby. “You two! Get him out of here!”
A gunship roars and the air fills with the thundering of military boots on snow. There’s the harsh shout of Berezniki that carries over the snowy countryside.
“Preacher-”
“Captain-”
“Do not disobey! There should be an access path in the cliffs some two miles from here. Take him and run as fast as you can. Hide if you’ve got to.”
Scott pulls out his gun from the holster and checks that it’s loaded. The bullets glint in the morning sunlight. He cocks it.
“Here.” Kronos pulls out his own gun and hands it to Scott. It’s a gesture that’s well appreciated. The situation becomes a ton of lead weighing down Scott’s mind. He helps Valentine up onto Kronos’s back and adjusts Sparrow’s gear.
“Write to my brothers, wouldja?”
Kronos knocks his helmet with Scott’s. The words Kronos and Preacherman connect. “I will.”
Scott nods. Kronos’s words are a promise.

Day 1689 - Monty got a raw deal
The next in my occasional series of station to station walks is from Knighton in Mid-Wales (although technically whilst Knighton is in Wales, the station is in England!) to Crick (which is just entirely in North Wales). This is continuing my walk along the Offa’s Dyke Path.
I last left the Offa’s Dyke Path on Day 1479 in Knighton. I would be joined again on this 3 day walk to Crick by my friend R. When we finished the five days’ walking from Chepstow to Knighton on Day 1479, we agreed we’d make some changes for the next section of Offa’s Dyke which included getting somebody to carry our bags (apart from a day rucksack obviously) and that we’d do it in winter to avoid over-heating again.
So here we were on a freezing frosty February morning setting out from the wonderful Horse and Jockey pub just as dawn was breaking which was around 8:15 in the morning.
This walk would not only provide the challenges of winter walking but it was also a race against the clock! We calculated that, notwithstanding that the sun may have set, we would have enough light to walk until about 5:15 each day. After that it would be pitch black! Luckily I had an app on my phone which would know our route , current speed and therefore be able to calculate our arrival time (provided we maintained that speed). What we’d already worked out without the app is that the day would be tough and that we could not afford any navigational errors.
The first part of the walk took us through the pleasant border town of Knighton. I’d seen on the map that we would need to make a right turn along a path before we reached the end of Knighton. I knew I couldn’t miss it but, of course, we did! We reached the top of a small hill at the end of Knighton and I’d new we’d gone wrong and we were only 20 minutes into our walk. Somebody shouted to us that if we were looking for the Offa’s Dyke Path, it was back down the hill the way we’d come. We found where we should be but there was no sign so we could not be 100% sure. We checked the app and decided it must be the right way.
We walked along a river bank. Whilst it was freezing cold, the hard frosty ground made walking easy and, for a city dweller like me, it was a heady experience to breathe in the sharp, clean early morning air. We passed a sign over a stream where you could stand with one foot in England and one in Wales. Despite our lost time we, of course, had to stop for a photo opportunity.
Lungs filled with clean oxygen for a change, we flew up the first steep climb out of the valley. Our app showed we had another 6 steep climbs that day. We were rewarded with beautiful winter sunshine at the top and we stopped for a couple of minutes to catch our breathe and to admire the frosted valley below. Congratulating ourselves at our awesomeness, we flew across the plateau and our app was telling us we’d be finished by around 4:30 so in plenty of time before it became dark.
We then hit climb 2. It was so steep. Head down, thighs burning and just keep going. At least at the top we reached the half-way point on the whole of the Offa’s Dyke Path – Prestatyn 88.5 miles in one direction, Chepstow 88.5 miles in the other direction.
Then to climb 3. Halfway-up the hill we were climbing I could see that the path branched; one route went to the left around the hill, the other went verticaly upwards. I optimistically shouted to R that this hill wasn’t too bad as we would soon be taking the left hand fork. Turns out my optimism was misplaced. The path went vertically up. It was so steep it was almost impossible to stand, let alone walk upwards. Somehow we made I to the top. As we were recovering, we both agreed that it would have been impossible to get up that hill had we been walking with full rucksacks. It would also have been impossible to get up had the ground been mud, rather than hard due to the cold. We counted ourselves lucky.
By now I’d given up with the scenery and just concentrated on getting through the next 4 climbs. The descents though were just as bad as you have to resist gravity through your knees to avoid plummeting downwards. The hills though were taking their toll. After the 7 assents and 7 descents the last 4 miles to our overnight stop in Montgomery would be largely flat. However all this ascending and descending had slowed us down. The app was saying a 5:35 finish which would mean we’d be having to walk in the dark. We tried to pick up the pace but we succeeded in knocking only a few minutes off. We really didn’t want to walk in the dark. As it got darker the temperature started to fall off a cliff! My hands were now numb with cold. Yes I could take my bag off, rifle through it and I’d find some gloves but every minute counted now. Cold and exhausted we arrived at our hotel in Montgomery at 5:30. We’d avoided total darkness but only because the last 10 minutes had been lit by street lights. Tomorrow we’d be walking further and we couldn’t afford any mistakes or any time for resting on the walk.

My river is thirsty! Feed it with Mercy!
Introduction
The Tapti river, more commonly known as the Tapi river is a water body that provides for all of us. This river flows from the hills of south-central Madhya Pradesh, making its way from Maharashtra, Surat Gujarat, and finally to the Gulf of Khambhat and into the Arabian sea.

Being the 2nd largest river in India, it provides water to 3 major states, Gujrat, Maharashtra, and Madhyapradesh, and is also given great importance in Hindu and Muslim religions, based on its history of it, and is also worshiped on numerous occasions, by thousands of people. 
Even though, with its importance and how essential it is, the river has gone through a lot in the past decade. 
The Problem
With the increased development and globalization, heavy industrialization, and increased usage of plastic, we have forgotten what has quenched our thirst over the years. More and more plastic is being dumped into the river, along with the industrial waste. The Central pollution board has also classified the Tapi-river as moderately polluted, as the water hardness, cleanliness, and overall quality have started to deplete over the past few years.

A lot of sewage has gathered in several places, near the river and its bank, and is affecting all the marine and terrestrial around it. Many times fishes are also found on the river banks, during summers and monsoon seasons, the river also occurs to be brown occasionally during the winters. Surat, Madhyapradesh, and Nasik are known for their industries in India for manufacturing and textile purposes, and the byproducts of production are also introduced to freshwater steam.

Plastic usage over the past decades has been increasing exponentially, the waste plastic which is leftover from food items, packaging materials, waste polyester, stationeries, and old parts from electronics machinery, is sometimes dumped into the riverfront or its bank. This is due to it is not easily recyclable and requiring a lot of money, so the easier option becomes to dump it into the river or the ocean. Back in the day, this wasn’t such big of an issue but over the past decade, our usage of plastic and other waste materials has increased and is starting to become a big issue and needs to be addressed quickly.
One more factor causing this problem to still exist is loose regulations and norms or people taking advantage of the government/system, for river water usage and waste management, which is why Tapi among many rivers in the world is suffering from it.
Although industrial waste and plastic are one of the largest contributors to Tapti river pollution, other miscellaneous factors are also responsible for the same, such as religious practices, fishing, boating, trade, and heavy rains are also responsible for the same. 
Effect and impact on other sectors
Plastic is a material used all over the world, but only recyclable in some places, because the land has strict norms for waste and has landfills everywhere, is not presentable and also expensive, people generally resort to dumping waste into the river nearby, although other factors like loose regulation and illiteracy add to this problem and contribute equally.

Consequently, a lot of marine life and water quality depletes day by day, and at the end of the day, we as citizens have to spend more amount of money on water purification in our homes, or on a local level(in form of taxes). 
Industrial waste has been a problem that has high severity, day by day our river has increased contamination and the number of minerals present inside it is increasing day by day.

The concentration of minerals like Ammonia, Phosphate, Potassium, and even the Ph value of water is not in the recommended range, and the maximum values of data collected are also well over the limit. While parameters like dissolved oxygen concentration in water, sodium concentration, fluoride concentration, Nitrate concentration, Nitride concentration, conductivity, alkalinity, and even temperature is lesser than of what it should be. This doesn’t allow marine life and other organisms to survive in the river. Continuation of this can also cause severe issues and damage to the ecosystem. 
From physics, we know that “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction”, which is true in our case (at least analogically). River pollution has its impact not just on us or the marine life but on a variety of places, and sectors. 
First of all, being the most obvious is us humans and marine life and the health sector, river pollution leads to several diseases, such as skin irritation and allergies, and consumption can lead to cancer, impotence, sterility in women, and other major health concerns, this is because water can be a source for pathogens, and lead to biomagnification in other organisms, if the river pollution is long term and goes unnoticed it can lead to a disaster (for example Minamata case) and have an impact on future generations, which is why it is such a large issue and globally discussed, also it has increased the average hospital occupancy by 3%.
River pollution can have an impact on the economic sector too because there is demand for freshwater from all over the world, river pollution can hamper fresh water supplies over the world, and companies like Kinley make use of water extracted from rivers located in Gujrat, Kolkata, etc… Due to high river pollution in India, some countries have banned the fresh water supply from Indian rivers.
It can also have an impact on the farming industry, this is because salty water is not good for crops, farms resort to taking their fresh water supply from rivers, and due to the water being contaminated with chemicals and plastic waste, it can affect the crops that grow, or result in an unhealthy or a low yield, often because the yield is bad/unhealthy or there is too much crop residue, farmers tend to burn it, causing air pollution, and due to this, there is a 9% growth loss in our GDP growth rate, in the past decade. 
Too much pollution in the river can also cause water clogging, which can affect our local freshwater supply too.

One hot example of the impact on the economic sectors is the way SMC has used Tapi river pollution to its advantage by setting up sewage treatment plants, selling fresh water to local industries and other states, and generating a lot of revenue. 
Another sector being affected by Tapi river pollution is Climate change, when evaporating processes are naturally occurring, pollution of plastic and industrial waste can lead to the mixing of toxic and greenhouse gas into the same, causing changes in rain cycle, extreme heat/cold, abnormal water levels, and extreme weather conditions, in the long run. 
Sustainability issues that arise due to this
Sustainability isn't just about the environment, it also includes environmental and social aspects to it. And river pollution as highlighted above affects all three of them causing tension and issues towards sustainability. 
River pollution impacts and contributes to a lot of SDGs, such as 3. Good health and well-being, 12. Responsible consumption and production, 14. Life below water, and most importantly 6. Clean water and sanitation. Because these SDGs are being affected, other SDGs also come into inclusion such as good health and well-being, industry innovation and infrastructure, and climate action. 
This not only causes, a lot of people to suffer but our goals are being delayed. And it is really important to remember that “Thinking someone else will solve the problem will not help it”. The more delayed and more intense the problem gets, it will get more difficult for us to repair the damage we have done. And Inorder to become sustainable, we have to solve this issue. 
Although Tapi river pollution hasn’t become very severe, we have already started facing problems like lack of clean water and sanitation and life below water, for our holy river. Continuation of these practices can lead to other issues and delay our achievement of the SDGs, moreover can impact the population both local and global. 
Steps have already been taken (big and small)
Because this is not a recent problem and has been observed by local authorities and globally steps have already been taken to minimize the effect and for the betterment of our river. 
→ Tapti river Bank cleanup movement: This movement has been organized by the local authorities, private NGOs, and other organizations with the help of SMC, to gather as many people as possible for the clean-up purpose of the Tapti river.

Back in 2018, efforts from SMC, under our ex-Chief minister Vijay Rupani had Organized an Rs. 941 crore cleanup plan 2018 and is still in progress, however, the importance and progress have depleted since COVID-19. 
Apart from SMC and other big organizations, small NGOs, institutions, schools, colleges and many other organizations have put in efforts for our river recovery, although their contribution is very little, it has a huge impact on others. 
Steps that can be taken by us!

If you are someone who can’t make a huge difference, just making small changes to your lifestyle can also help the situation, because remember, to climb a mountain you have to take small steps.
Here are some tips and tricks from my end that can help you reduce your contribution to river pollution and help reduce the damage being done. 
Tip1: Note what chemicals you use: Most chemicals nowadays contain some amount of minerals such as phosphorus, arsenic, and sometimes even ammonia, which can be harmful to the water quality of the river you live nearby, so instead of using basins or toilets to drain our these chemicals you use, instead use to dustbin or drainage bags to do so. 
Tip2: Use less plastic: Although it is quite hard to avoid plastic because most of the things you make use of are made of plastic, try and consume it less, resume the bottle you bought from the store, avoid plastic packaging, and try to recycle and resume what you consume. 
Tip3: Don’t litter around, instead use the dustbin: Using the dustbin to throw out the trash is important because many times the thrash you throw around doesn’t end up where it is supposed to, also producing less waste can also help the cause, instead of buying from supermarkets, choose for local stores, this helps the economy and also helps the environment and reduce waste. 
Tip4: Spread awareness, a lot of people nowadays have access to social media and the internet, and it is really important for people to know how severe the Tapi river conditions are, and is important for a lot of people to know and help our cause. 
Tip5: Clean nearby river banks, or donate some money to do so, organizations like Rivers of the world foundation, The Nature Conservancy, or the Environmentalist Foundation of India help clean rivers and maintain their water quality, donating to these organizations or participating in the campaigns organized by them can help clean the river a lot. 
Conclusion
At the end of the day, our Tapti river has suffered a lot and this needs to be changed. Join in the movement and help make a difference, make changes to your lifestyle, not for you, not for all of us, but for our river.
