So I'm not usually the type to do a fic preview? But my writer's block has been fucking atrocious and I could use the support, so here is the prologue to the thing I'm working on, which is a post-canon OX Blades story about getting the band back together to face a great evil. Is the evil maintaining adult friendships? Who can say.

Not all good endings are happy, and not all happy endings are good. 

The camera pans out on the Hobbyhorses and their entourage leaving the desert, the Barricade gone, magic leaching back into the world. Within the hour, Eleanor will try her teleport spell for the second time, and they will be gone.

The camera tracks away from the mountains, drifts like these things always do, ceases to be, because the story is over. The attention of the storyteller is no longer relevant to the world he created.

But let us stay instead, hovering over the mountain, the compound, the Barricade. Among the dead are Roth, various Red Sashes, and the silent, inanimate mechanical men. Among the living are the scientists, the other Red Sashes, and maybe Kellie Dimmer, whose fate is unrecorded.

The living muster their forces, figure out how to retrofit one of the train carriages, leave for Volisport never to return. The dead just kind of sit there.

And Amadeus Astor-

Eight people received the heaviest dose of magical energy that any being has ever received in the history of Geth. Six of them teleported away, one of them took her shot, and Amadeus Astor-

Amadeus Astor.

Amadeus Astor certainly doesn't not die, it's not that kind of thing. But despite the fact that Astor is not alive does not in this case quite mean that he is one hundred percent dead. Instead he is in a state of horrid life-unlife in the middle of the desert with little around him but the mortal remains of a few Red Sashes and his man Roth.

In the time in which he is not dead, he sees the strangest visions of a world that could never be, never was, and will be again. He feels come over him a force that literally no one has felt in 500 years. He ruminates on his loss and the nature of what he would have needed in order to be whole.

And then he really does die.

Seven years pass.

And then Amadeus Astor becomes a problem.

Threw together a collage of my oxventure fanart from last year while I watched the Kobolds episode. It's wild to look back and see how many I made (I couldn't even fit everyone in).

They have filled such a meaningful space in my life for so many years, I'm excited and bitter-sweet thinking of their retirement as a guild.

It's also funny to see I have the style consistency of a broken slip and slide.

This is the version that doesn't have all of my notes in it, so it's not actually 48 pages long. Almost all of the additional material that I have has already been posted to this account; there are a couple of remaining things I might clean up, but not much.
