Clanmew: Counting, Measurements

Welcome back to Cat ESL everyone! Today we're going to be talking about quantifying things.

The five Clans have a very unique number system. If you're looking for exact measurements, you will not find it here. Clan cats count using fractions, communicating size and 'completeness' instead of straightforward mathematical concepts.

Denominator Words

There are five "number" words, each responding to the 'denominator' (bottom number) of the fraction:

2 to 4 = "Arra" = Amount of pieces of prey that can fit in a mouth. Direct translation: Amount.

5 = "Rarra" = Amount of claws on one paw, amount of Clans Etymology: Clan Amount

9 = "Pabparra" = Amount of a full day's patrol assignments Etymology: Patrol Amount

12 = "Husskarra" = Amount of whiskers on one side of the face Etymology: Whisker Amount

30-ish = "Shomarra" = Amount of days in a month Etymology: Moon Amount

Usually, the fraction chosen to describe an amount is relevant to the concept at hand. Arra is for tasks like a checklist. Rarra describes collections of things. Pabparra is for working in teams. Husskarra is about danger and hordes. Shomarra is for keeping time.

Technically, "3 quarters of Husskarra" is a "Whole Pabparra," but the former implies you should be alert because there could be unknown danger, where the latter means completeness and good planning.

Human numbers, 1 2 3, are straightforward descriptors of reality. Clan fractions are symbolic of something.

Breaking the Fraction

For each fraction, the completeness is specified with a prefix,

Beginning = "Prra"

Quarter = "Warl"

Half = "Yosh"

Three Quarters = "Ark"

Entire = "Ul"

3 quarters of Husskarra would be, "Ark-husskarra." One whole Pabparra is, "Ul-pabparra"

Sometimes these just don't cut it-- how would you tell someone to meet you in three days, since Shomarra is such a large fraction? Even "Warl-shomarra" means a whole week!

You add onto the fraction itself, with,

Om Owar = "And Another"

Nyo Owar = "Less Another"

To say "three days," the phrase is "Prra-shomarra, om owar, owar, owar." For a month that will be about a day shorter than usual, they would say, "Ul-shomarra, nyo owar."

Husskarra is sometimes doubled to invoke the mental image of needing to use one's whole face to fathom the danger, or just for hyperbole to describe an overwhelming amount of something.

"Husskarra om owar husskarra!" = "Half a face of whiskers, plus another!" Says Jayfeather, being given one (1) minor inconvenience

When this is applied to Pabparra, in contrast, it implies being over-prepared or being careful. "Ul-pabparra am owar ul-pabparra, am owar" = "I doubled the patrols and threw in some extra."

The Uniqueness of Arra

The closest thing the Clan cats have to true counting is modifying Arra with these prefixes, then using 'ul' as a sentence modifier to imply fractional completeness.

"Three toads" = "ark-arra amam ul" = "Three-quarters-amount toad only."

If you said, "Ark-arra amam," you would have said that there are three toads, maybe more. This is helpful in Clanmew because on a hunting trip, there's usually more than what you can currently see.

Besides its numerical amount being situational, there is another interesting quirk of 'arra.' It can mean completeness, and also, loneliness. "Ul-arra" is a completed fraction and can mean many things; whole, finished, the full moon's light, lonely, or translated simply, just one.

Clan cats define themselves as being part of something, and always having a task to do, even if that task is to take their well-earned midday nap. There is a common expression of despair,

"Arrl gryr ul-arra wrah!" = "I have to do everything myself!" = "(I) must contain wholeness mine!"

Onewhisker's name was a reference to his birth; the only child of Cloudrunner and Larksplash, both his mother and the rest of his litter having not survived the kitting. His father named the child "Ul-arra-mew," "Onekit," "Only-Child."

Folding Wood board with 2 rows of 6 pits (holes).(You can play with three seeds in each pit to make the game go faster.) Components It doesn’t matter what color the seeds are. The other person should do the same thing. Put four seeds in each of the six holes on your side of the game board.

Here is some information about how to play mancala. If it seems too hard, you could even take some away. Don’t forget that there are other rules you can use if the game gets too easy. But if you have a board and some stones, it can feel a lot easier. Confusing? When you’re not playing, it seems that way. If you drop your last unique stone in your own mancala, you can choose any pocket and keep going. On the other hand, if your last stone falls into a pocket with more stones, you can pick up those stones and keep going. If the last stone falls into an empty pocket on either side of the board, you’re out. Players skip their opponent’s store as they drop stones along the path (or mancala). We’ll tell you the most basic rules so that everyone can enjoy the game. From there, you can make things as easy or hard as you want. Then, they have to go counterclockwise around the board, dropping one stone in each pocket or store along the way. Choose who will go first, and let that person take any four stones from any pocket. Even though it looks like another board game, that’s not bad. Mancala also gives older elementary students a natural way to think about multiplication. A few days later you were watching the boys game, but when you saw Anthony get injured you felt your heart stop, it was like everything around you froze. All you could see was him lying on the ice writhing in pain. What made it even worse was the fact that it was an away game, so you had no clue when he’d be home. What you did know was that you were scared, you needed to know he was gonna be okay.”I’ve gotta make sure Beau is okay, god what do I do?” you stumble over your words pulling up Beaus contact on your phone. The moment your co-worker, whom you had been watching the game with, saw the word ‘Bubs<3’ on your phone screen she snatched it from your hand. “No y/n, calm down, he won't be able to answer, you know that hun.” Jo says, trying to console you. “Come on we’ll turn the game off and chill until you’re able to get a hold of Mat or Anthony okay? That sound good?” she continues in the most comforting voice she could muster up. Nodding you let her put on reruns of criminal minds to keep your mind off of Beau being hurt. Before you know it, you’ve fallen asleep on the couch.

You woke up the next morning, with a blanket covering you and a sticky note stuck to your cup you’d sat on the table the night before. Grabbing the note you read it aloud, “Hey y/n, had to leave last night but I’d check your phone, it kept going off before I left.” quickly you're grabbing your phone and checking for anything from mat or beau, but what surprises you is seeing their captains, Anders Lee, name in the flood of texts.

Anders- Beau is okay, Mat is staying with him. They both passed out already, thought you might wanna see. Attached to the text is a photo of the two men cuddled together sleeping soundly. Letting out a breath of relief, you text Anders a quick thank you and move on to your other messages. You check the messages from Beau first, seeing he’d sent you multiple.

Bubs<3- hey i know you were watching and i wanna let you know i’m okay don't worry.

Bubs<3- i’m gonna be home sometime tomorrow. Can’t wait to see you again bug.

Bubs<3- pretty sure you’re asleep by now, but me and sunshine miss you and love you lots. See you soon love bug. Goodnight.

Next is Mats texts, but as you’re reading them you hear keys jingling coming from the front door. Eagerly you rush towards the door in hopes that when it opens you will see either one of your boys. To your relief, both men walk in moments later. As soon as you see them you’re at their sides, quickly you murmur a ‘hi i love you babe’ to mat before going to tito. “Hey bubs, how are you feeling? Do you need anything?” Tito laughs, shaking his head, “bug i’m okay, can we just go lay down?” he asks. “ Of course we can bubs.” grabbing both Mat and Tito by the wrist, you lead them towards the bedroom. As soon as the three of you are in the room you let the two men get undressed and into more comfortable clothes. “Movie night?” you call out. After a few moments, you didn't get a response from either Mat or Tito, so you head to the bathroom to check on the two.

Getting to the doorway, you stop when you see them, Mat is massaging Anthonys shoulder, you assume it is to help the pain. You stand and watch the interaction for a few moments before Tito notices you staring. He motions you over, pulling you to his side when you approach. Mat leans over to press a soft kiss to your forehead, before you wrap your arms around him and Tito begins to rub random shapes into your bare skin, resting his hand just at your waist under your shirt. The three of you stand there, enjoying each other's presence for what feels like forever, but in reality it was probably not even ten minutes. Afterwards the rest of the night is spent in the comforting embrace of one another.

The next morning you and Mat were both awake before Anthony and decide to spend the morning watching movies together, having not seen each other much the night before. “Hey baby, you want me to make some popcorn too?” he calls out from the kitchen. “Yes please,’ you yell back with a smile. It has been a while since you had been able to spend time with just Mat. It doesn't bother you that Tito is always around, it doesn't bother Mat either. It was nice to have alone time with your boyfriend, even if your shared best friend was still resting in your bed not two rooms away.

Mat laying his head in your lap brings you back to reality, “You okay my love?” you ask, running your fingers through his hair, looking down at him. Taking a good look you could see how exhausted he is. You were beginning to wonder if he was sleeping well on roadies. If he wasn't, you couldn't help but wonder what the reason would be considering he hadn't had much trouble before. “Have you been sleeping well baby? You look so tired.” you question. “I haven’t been, but it’s okay baby don’t worry. Now that I'm with you I'll be okay.” he mutters before leaving a kiss on the back of your hand. He turns his head back to the television but before either of you know it he’s nodding off in your lap. You watch him for a few moments and see him forcing himself to stay awake. “Baby you can sleep, it’s okay.” he shakes his head, “No, wanna stay awake with you pretty.” A voice interrupts you, “Sunshine, go back to sleep you know you need it.” Beau comes over and sits on the opposite side of you, which lets you rest your head on his shoulder. “Yeah, listen to Beau, okay?” he groans out a quiet ‘fine’ and nuzzles back into your lap.

“How’s the shoulder bubs?” you ask, looking towards Anthony. “Fine I guess, probably gonna be out for a few games.” his face drops as he speaks. “Oh babe, it’s gonna be okay. You’ll heal real quick, yeah?” you murmur in hopes of consoling him, pressing a kiss to his cheek. You know how much he loves kisses on the cheek, he’d always expressed his love for them no matter who they come from, whether it be you, Mat, or any of the guys on the team. With a frown etched on his face, “Yeah I guess, just sucks you know?” with a nod, you continue consoling him. “I know, but I know you. You’ll come back stronger than ever. You’ll do what you have to so you can get back to normal. And you know that you’ve got me and Mat by your side the whole time.” you finish with a smile. You see tears filling his eyes and begin to worry. “ No no babe no crying, everything is okay.” you rush out before pulling his head to your neck. You hear him mutter a thank you into your neck which brings a smile to your face, glad to have made him feel even a little better. The rest of the day was spent with you cuddled between the two taller men. If you were honest, you wouldn't have it any other way. You were content with Mat cuddled into your side and Tito blurting something out about whatever you were watching every five minutes. It was all perfect. Though you couldn't keep your mind off of that morning. You kept wondering if that ‘crush’ on Tito was back. Little did you know, Mat and Tito were thinking the same thing.

Thinking about Calpernia and the Tranquil, and I was wondering how she could tolerate her Venatori killing them off to make Oculara when one of the driving pillars of her character is her desire to see people freed from their oppression. It’s not something I had thought about before because the Oculara were never something I associated with Calpernia, but they were created by the Venatori and thus Calpernia should be tied to their existence, right? So I started looking into it, and I’ve come to the conclusion that, no, I honestly don’t think Calpernia tolerated the creation of the Oculara; I don’t even think she was aware of their existence. And here are my reasons why.

1. Who is responsible for the creation/placement of the Oculara?

Alexius. The codices referring to the Oculara place Alexius as the person in charge of their creation and distribution. Not to mention the fact that the Oculara are created in Redcliffe itself and not imported from Tevinter. As Alexius is a known innovator when it comes to magic, it’s feasible he came to this knowledge himself (or directly from Corypheus) and was not given this information by Calpernia. Nothing regarding the Oculara mentions Calpernia at any point, as far as I’m aware.

2. Wouldn’t Calpernia know about it anyway, even if she was not involved directly?

No. As it turns out and is particularly evidenced by her rival quest in DAI, there are many things about the Venatori and Corypheus that Calpernia does not know. The version of the Venatori that Calpernia believes she is leading is a carefully constructed illusion to keep her dedicated to the cause she believes in. Corypheus has done this on purpose. If she knew what he was really using the Venatori for, what he really had planned, she would want no part in it, as evidenced by the option to talk her into betraying Corypheus at the Temple of Mythal.

Moreso, Alexius did not answer to Calpernia. His direct superior was Corypheus himself. I don’t even recall him mentioning Calpernia (if he did the whoops my mistake), and all indications given were that Alexius was in charge of the Venatori in the south, regardless of Calpernia’s positioning as the overall leader of the group. It would have been very easy for the activities of the southern Venatori to be kept from Calpernia given that most of her updates would come from reports where information could be easily omitted, and it is something that Corypheus would certainly find most beneficial if he wants Calpernia to continue believing that their goals are aligned when they are most certainly not.

3. Even if she didn’t know at first, wouldn’t Calpernia find out eventually after Alexius is gone and the southern Venatori are under her direct command?

No. As mentioned, Corypheus maintained a tight control over what information reached Calpernia’s ears. Even after Alexius is gone and she takes direct control over the Venatori in the south, the Oculara have already been placed. Calpernia’s involvement at that point is not with the distribution of the Oculara, but with the shards. With what we know, it’s reasonable to believe that the shards, to her knowledge, were merely found due to disruptions caused by the Breach that revealed their location. The most that Calpernia has to know if she is involved is that these shards are related to an elven temple that Corypheus seeks and that her people should be actively engaged in finding them for the sake of the Elder One. She does not need to be told how the shards are found, as she, the elusive leader of the Venatori, will never be the one to hunt for them. That’s grunt work, and there are better things worthy of her time.

In conclusion, Calpernia does not know about the Oculara or how they are made, and she would not approve if she did know.

At most she knows about the shards, but that’s it. Unless I’m missing something in Inquisition that proves that she does know (which is likely because Inquisition has so much dialogue that I did not feel like digging through it all), this is my answer as to why she allows her Venatori to engage in a practice that directly conflicts with one of her core beliefs: she doesn’t.

If it was a conscious choice by b*oware to distance Calpernia from the Oculara plotline for this reason, then okay that’s nice. It makes sense if you rationalize it as Corypheus purposefully keeping this from her, and I’m okay with that answer.

Or it could all just be a big plot hole and they genuinely forgot about it or chose to ignore the moral dilemma and character inconsistency this would present so they could have a massive glowy skull scavenger hunt side-quest. That’s probably what really happened tbh.

Hi Hello There

so uh. I got a ton of followers the last couple of days so hi and welcome! it’s time for another intro post

I go by Bisho (remnants of an ancient URL from forever ago, short for Bishoujo), alternatively starting to go by Aurora now. I’m a 30mumble years old Black bi poly femme creeping toward eldergoth-hood and in theory this is a multifandom blog mostly about video games but that really just means FFXIV with sprinklings of whatever. I don’t do sideblogs because I can’t keep track of them so. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Sometimes you will see random ADHD blogging (I has it), Disney theme park stuff (I’m a WDW AP despite being a New Yorker and it’s a special interest) and talk about witchcraft and Hellenic Polytheism since I’ve been practicing more than 20 years.

my ffxiv content is mostly flailing about my WoL, fanfics, and shitposting. I am a lifelong hardcore Final Fantasy fangirl who honest to dog grew up with the series from the start. I did play XI for a while with my gf at the time but really hated it and it put me off so badly that when XIV came out I had no interest in it, especially when I heard about how Bad it was. I only picked it up a couple of years ago on PS4 during Stormblood, around 4.0/4.1? I played FF Record Keeper on mobile and got a whole bunch of Alphinaud’s gear and wanted to learn about them. Now I’m just sorry I didn’t start playing sooner, lol. (It finally got me to kill the WoW sub I’d hung onto for years despite not really playing anymore)

I literally only got the Windows version of the game to Bootcamp on my Mac about a month ago to play with mods and gpose and whatnot so I am still very very new to the art of fancy screenshotting and still learning. 2 hot 4 tumblr pics go up on twitter where i am queensurana (fair warning I literally made it as a dumping ground for PS4 screenshots so there isn’t much there yet). But I am primarily a fic writer. I don’t RP for various personal reasons (mostly to do with WoW’s awful community) but 100% support those who do.

My WoL has a big ol master post that I’m still working on (really just to add links) but the tl;dr is that Gisele is a canon immigrant from Dr*gon Age: Origins, in this timeline she did not do the Dark Ritual with Morrigan and so died when she killed Urthemiel at the end, but then ended up in Eorzea. Shenanigans of various sorts ensued. Kylenne is my AO3 pseud if you’re interested in that. Most of what you’ll see on there is B*oware content because I was heavily involved in DA and ME for years here (the former I dipped from with extreme prejudice) and the odd Warcrack stuff. But more and more XIV is on there now and I plan to post more in the future. Shorter fics and prompt fills tend to be posted here.

“fandom fuckery” is the tag you want to block if you don’t want venting, I try to tag for negativity and whatnot. I get it, sometimes I can’t deal with yelling either. in general I try to be generous and judicious with tagging but if you need something tagged that isn’t, feel free to drop me an ask. In general don’t be scared or shy to interact with me or my content, I am honestly looking for more xiv friends which is admittedly a bit rough as someone who just writes fics and doesn’t RP.
