The king with one-eye, twinkling in the dark.
He thought he would see the gods with the other,
for they only reveal their glories with the second sun.
The king with one eye, notes the silvery threads
before the moon crosses the threshold,
and takes his sight away from it.
The king with one eye, he laments on the stars
dancing in his face, but unable to grab them.
What powers does he need, if he could take his steed
and ride towards the sterling crown right in front of him?
But he doesn't feel cold steel--nay,
he finds the metal melting like ice in the spring;
the water dropping on lilies like sullen rain.
How will he acclimate to his power again?
How will he know who is his heir and who is his second son?
The sky clears up, and the goddess blows away the ashes.
But the once clear-eyed king trembles,
his hands burning, and his toes curling in retreat,
because he is a mortal, after all,
in a universe of torment and lightning,
with only magic as a source of power
rather than as a strength. --Elda Mengisto
Author's Note: Since my WIP, Out There, takes place before a solar eclipse, here's a draft poem based on Carinian mythology.
