1902 – F.O. (Francis Otto) Matthiessen was an educator, scholar and literary critic influential in the fields of American literature and American studies. (d.1950) The exchange of letters between him and his lover Russell Cheney are among the most revealing gay male documents of the 1920s.

Born in Pasadena, California, after his parents' divorce in 1915, Matthiessen lived on his grandfather's farm in Illinois, later attended boarding school in Tarrytown, New York. Toward the end of World War I, joined the Canadian Air Force. He entered Yale in 1919, where he was a member of Skull and Bones society, and graduated in 1923 with many honors, and then became a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, receiving a B. Litt. in 1925.

Matthiessen's best-known book, American Renaissance: Art and Expression in the Age of Emerson and Whitman (1941), discusses the flowering of literary culture in the middle of the American 19th century, with Emerson, Thoreau, Melville, Whitman and Nathaniel Hawthorne.

While sailing for Oxford, he met the painter Russell Cheney; they would be lovers until Cheney's death in 1945. Cheney, though closeted in many ways, was a profoundly positive influence on Matthiessen, encouraging his interest in gay and lesbian literary figures like Walt Whitman and Sarah Orne Jewett.

The couple shared a cottage in Kittery, Maine for decades. In planning to spend his life with Cheney, Matthiessen went as far as asking his cohort in the Yale secret society Skull and Bones to approve of their partnership. With Cheney having encouraged Matthiessen's interest in Whitman, it has been argued that American Renaissance was "the ultimate expression of Matthiessen's love for Cheney and a secret celebration of the gay artist."

Matthiessen, as a gay man in the 1930s and 1940s, chose to remain in the closet throughout his professional career, if not in his personal life - although traces of homoerotic concern are apparent in his writings. In 2009, a statement from Harvard University said that Matthiessen "stands out as an unusual example of a gay man who lived his sexuality as an 'open secret' in the mid-20th century."

After Cheney's death in 1945, Matthiessen was increasingly distraught; he committed suicide by jumping from a window in 1950. Because Matthiessen's politics were left-wing, socialist, though not dogmatically Marxist, inquiries by House Un-American Activities Committee into his politics may also have been a factor in his suicide: writing in 1958, Eric Jacobsen referred to Matthiessen's death as "hastened by forces whose activities earned for themselves the sobriquet un-American which they sought so assiduously to fasten on others".

1921 – Dudley Cave was a British former soldier and pioneering gay rights activist (d.1999). He joined the Royal Army Ordnance Corps in 1941, aged 20, and was posted to the Far East. He was captured by the Japanese when Singapore fell in 1942 and was marched north to work on the Thai-Burma railway, 10 miles beyond the bridge on the River Kwai. He caught malaria and was imprisoned in Changi Prison in Singapore because he was unproductive. This may have saved his life. Three quarters of his company perished.

When back in Britain he had a job as manager of the Majestic Cinema, Wembley, but in 1954 he was sacked when it was discovered that he was gay. Also in 1954 he met Bernard Williams, an RAF veteran and school teacher, and they became lovers and co-campaigners for 40 years until Bernard Williams died in 1994.

In 1971 Dudley Cave joined the Unitarian Church and helped in securing the ordination of lesbians and gay men. He also conducted same-sex weddings.

In 1974 he was on the launch committee of the London Gay Switchboard, and he was still answering the telephone right up to his death 25 years later.

He and his partner, Bernard Williams, founded the Lesbian and Gay Bereavement Project in 1980, and they ran its telephone helpline for many years. After a battle with the Charity Commissioners this became the first organisation with 'gay' in its title to be given charitable status.

In the 1980s he worked on reconciliation with the Japanese and travelled a number of times to Japan to speak on the subject.

In November, 1998 he was OutRage!'s keynote speaker at its Queer Remembrance Day vigil at the Cenotaph where he layed a pink triangle wreath honouring gay people who died fighting Nazism and in the concentration camps.

Dudley Cave dedicated most of his life to challenging and fighting prejudice and seeking justice and equality for gay people especially in the areas of military recognition and issues of bereavement for gay people of all ages; he did so with great eloquence, dignity and integrity.

1925 – J. J. Belanger (d.1993) was member and officer in the Mattachine Society in the 1950s and 1960s, a volunteer in numerous causes in the 1970s and 1980s, and a collector of LGBT history, especially of AIDS-related materials of the mid-to-late 1980s.

Joseph John Bertrund Belanger was born February 19, 1925, in Edmonton, Canada. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942 to 1944 where he was awarded a Defense Medal, Canadian Voluntary Service Medal, and War Medal for his World War II service. He worked odd jobs in Vancouver and Calgary until 1954 when he joined the United States Air Force. He served for five years, earning the Aviation Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Outstanding Airman of the 26th Air Refueling Squadron, numerous other commendations, and a promotion.

Belanger became a member of the Mattachine Society in the early 1950s, but resigned in 1953 after an incident with police threatened to bring negative publicity to the organization. However, Belanger maintained contact with Hal Call and in 1958 became the Mattachine Society's Director of Public Relations. In 1959 he was voted out of the post, but still remained a member of the society.

From the 1950s Belanger lived in either San Francisco and Los Angeles, although the particulars of his life are documented only sporadically. He was the Los Angeles coordinator of the Eulenspiegel Society in the 1970s. In the 1980s he was politically involved with the San Francisco chapter of the Stonewall Gay Democratic Club, where he ran and lost a bid for treasurer in 1988. Also in the 1980s he volunteered for Project Inform and was a member of the Quarantine Fighter’s Group. Belanger was also a devoted collector of LGBT history, especially of AIDS-related materials of the mid-to-late 1980s.

1947 – John Holder Jr, better known as Jackie Curtis, was a famous transgendered film star, poet and playwright. (d.1985)

Curtis was born in New York City, and later died there of a drug overdose. He spent part of his life living and performing as a man (sometimes adopting a James Dean persona) and sometimes as a woman.

While living and performing in drag, she would typically wear lipstick, glitter around the eyes and in her frizzed-out red hair, and a dress, frequently ripped and torn, as were her stockings. This unique style, a combination of trash and glamour which Curtis pioneered in the late 1960s when frequenting such high profile nightclubs as Max's Kansas City, has prompted assertions that Jackie inspired the Glam Rock persona of the 1970s.

'Jackie Curtis is not a drag queen. Jackie is an artist. A pioneer without a frontier,' Andy Warhol said of his associate. Primarily a stage actor, Curtis debuted at the age of 17 in Tom Eyen's play Miss Neferititi Regrets. Curtis began to write his own plays immediately after this experience, often featuring famous transsexuals, such as his friend Candy Darling and, later, Holly Woodlawn, both of whom appeared in his productions which enjoyed successful runs Off-Off-Broadway and were well-reviewed in New York. Curtis's work is representative of the Theatre of the Ridiculous.

As writer and lead actress some of her plays include: Glamour, Glory and Gold; Amerika Cleopatra which featured Harvey Fierstein; Femme Fatale; and Heaven Grand In Amber Orbit with Holly Woodlawn, produced by John Vaccaro's Playhouse of the Ridiculous in 1970.

These plays caught the attention of Andy Warhol and his director Paul Morrissey, who cast Jackie and Candy in Flesh (1968) and, with the addition of Holly Woodlawn, in Women in Revolt (1971); a hilarious spoof of the women's liberation movement in which all the female leads are played by transsexuals and transvestites.

Apart from acting, Curtis also showed talent in poetry and singing. Jackie Curtis made two more movies during the 1980s. Drug addiction, however, had taken control of Curtis's life, eventually leading to his death.

In 2004, a film based on Curtis's life, Superstar in a Housedress, brought Jackie Curtis back to the limelight, exposing some little known facts about the performer to the public. Curtis's influence on a number of people, friends and associates such as Holly Woodlawn, Joe Dallesandro and Penny Arcade, and observers such as David Bowie, is noted in the film.

1952 – California artist Lari Pittman creates visually beautiful and exciting paintings that depict the anxiety attendant on being a gay male in America. They confront the perils and dangers that threaten homosexuality even as they resolutely affirm homosexual love.

Lari Pittman was born in Glendale, California. Pittman spent much of his childhood in the Colombian cities of Cali and Tumace, where his father worked in the lumber industry. An effeminate child, he loved playing with his mother's jewelry. His desire to decorate with baubles received parental support and has deeply influenced his subsequent art.

After studying painting at University of California, Los Angeles from 1970 to 1973, Pittman transferred to the California Institute of Arts. Pittman held his first solo exhibition in 1982 to mixed reactions. His early works, full of obscure references, are purposely made to be difficult for the viewer to decipher.

In 1985, Pittman changed his style as the result of suffering a near fatal attack. One night, he discovered a burglar in his home. When he attempted to scare off the man, he was shot in the stomach. The injury resulted in a colostomy and a long period of recovery. After this harrowing, near death experience, Pittman decided to stop being evasive about his homosexuality and about the thematics of his work. He has since sought to erase the distinction between the private and the public as a means of gay activism.

Pittman's post-1985 imagery is much more open and readable than his earlier imagery. In This Wholesomeness, Beloved and Despised, Continues Regardless (1990), for example, he creates a complex narrative through the use of accessible images. At the center of this canvas is a gay couple making love. However, the decorative elements in the painting are both celebratory and ominous, ranging from an inscribed "69" (a motif he uses in several works) to a noose and a menacing figure wielding a knife. Thus, the work's narrative structure celebrates gay relationships, but also acknowledges the homophobic conditions in which they are experienced. The painting makes an affecting statement about the persistence and perseverance of gay love even in the face of hatred and persecution.

Pittman's paintings consider American identity and history, often incorporating motifs from folk art and popular culture, as in An American Place (1986). Such motifs give his work a cartoon-like quality, with every space packed with imagery and action.

He has been attacked for being too political because he has dared to address the difficulties of life as a gay man in paintings that grab attention. Indeed, Pittman may be justly regarded as our foremost painter of gay pride.

He lives in Los Angles with his longtime companion, fellow artist Roy Dowell, with whom he sometimes collaborates.

Self is a native of Georgia, who grew up in the South. After attending middle school, Self persuaded his parents to let him be homeschooled to avoid dealing in high school with the fact that he was gay.

Self has appeared in many television shows as a recurring, featured or guest actor. He and Cole Escola starred in the sketch comedy series Jeffery & Cole Casserole, which aired on Logo TV for two seasons. He has also appeared in Desperate Housewives, 90210, Hot In Cleveland, Torchwood, Shameless, Difficult People, and as Liz Lemon's cousin Randy Lemon on NBC's 30 Rock. He is the author of two humor books: Fifty Shades Of Gay and Straight People: A Spotters Guide, as well as the young adult novels A Very Very Bad Thing and Drag Teen. He co-wrote, produced, and starred in the indie horror/comedy cult hit You're Killing Me. He was the host of the MTV series, Scream: After Dark, a talk show devoted to deleted scenes and interviews with the cast of the popular MTV horror series Scream. He currently plays Marc Doober on Search Party on TBS.

Self is openly gay. He dated Patrick McDonald of Fire Island for three years and publicly blogged about their breakup. On January 8, 2017, Self and his boyfriend, Augustus Prew, announced their engagement via Instagram. They were married on January 13, 2018 in Culver City, California.

1993 – The Crying Game, a film written and directed by Neil Jordan, portrays the relationship between a transsexual woman and an IRA fighter in London. In 1999, the British Film Institute named it the 26th greatest British film of all time.

2007 – In New Jersey the first same-sex couple, Daniel Gross and Steven Goldstein, held a civil union ceremony when hundreds of Gay couples were granted the same legal rights, if not the title, as married couples as New Jersey became the third state to offer civil unions.

Die Grundsteinlegung für das Stadion im Prater erfolgte anlässlich des zehnjährigen Bestands der Ersten Republik am 12. November 1928. Die österreichische Sozialdemokratie setzte sich damit ein symbolträchtiges Zeichen.

Der Granitblock, der als Grundstein dienen sollte, wurde zunächst provisorisch in der Prater-Hauptallee aufgestellt. Es war noch nicht entschieden, wo das Stadion einmal stehen sollte - im Augarten, am Cobenzl, auf der Hohen Warte oder im Prater. Hohe Warte und Prater waren einander jedenfalls ebenbürtig, denn dort hatte immerhin die Geschichte des Wiener Fußballs begonnen. Das allererste offizielle Fußballmatch in Wien wurde am 15. November 1894 auf der Jesuitenwiese zwischen den beiden Vereinen "Vienna Cricket and Football Club" und dem "Vienna Football Club" (kurz "Vienna" genannt) ausgetragen. Es endete mit einem 4:1 für die "Heimmannschaft".

Das Wiener Praterstadion war von Beginn an als Österreichisches Nationalstadion konzipiert. Nach den Plänen des deutschen Architekten Otto Ernst Schweizer in dreijähriger Bauzeit errichtet, entsprach die für die damalige Zeit innovative Stadionanlage ganz den Grundsätzen der egalitären Arbeitersportbewegung.

Möglichst auf allen Plätzen sollte eine gute Sicht gewährleistet sein. Bei den Planungen wurden Anleihen an Stadien anderer europäischer Großstädte genommen, wie zum Beispiel dem Wembley Stadion.

Schweizer konzipierte nicht nur eine Sportarena, sondern zugleich ein ausuferndes multifunktionales Sportzentrum mit Badeanlage, Radrennbahn, Freilichtbühne, Tennis- und Trainingsplätzen, Turnhallen, einer Sportschule mit Hörsälen und Bibliothek. Auch wenn nicht alles Geplante realisiert wurde, so waren die ZeitgenossInnen doch beeindruckt.

Die Eröffnung erfolgte am 11. Juli 1931 mit einer Begegnung der Arbeiterfußballauswahl Wien gegen ihr niederösterreichisches Pendant vor 25.000 Zuschauern. Eine Woche später folgte mit der zweiten "Arbeiter-Olympiade" (19. bis 26. Juli 1931) die erste Großveranstaltung, bei der rund 25.000 Sportler in 117 Disziplinen antraten.

Das Wiener Praterstadion wurde nach der Annexion Österreichs durch die Deutsche Wehrmacht zunächst zur Kaserne umfunktioniert und wurde unter anderem Sitz des Planungsbüros der Nationalsozialisten

Im September 1939 diente die Sportstätte als Internierungs- und Deportationsort für rund 1.000 jüdische Männer und männliche Jugendliche, die 1939 ins Konzentrationslager Buchenwald deportiert wurden.

Eine Gedenktafel in der Ehrenhalle erinnert heute an die dunkelste Zeit des Wiener Stadions.

1944 wurde das Stadion laufend von Bombenangriffen der Alliierten heimgesucht, die dem Planungsbüro der Wehrmacht galten. Der Sektor E wurde total zerstört, die Radrennbahn unbrauchbar gemacht, das Stadionbad wurde ein Opfer der Flammen.

Nach Kriegsende wurde der Spielbetrieb im Prater wieder relativ schnell aufgenommen. So fand das erste Fußballspiel am 6. Dezember 1945 statt, als die österreichische Nationalmannschaft mit 4:1 vor 55.000 Zuschauern ihr französisches Gegenüber besiegte. Durch den Bau eines dritten Zuschauerrangs Mitte der 1950er Jahre bis 1960 erhöhte sich das Fassungsvermögen des Stadions auf rund 90.000 Personen.

In den 1980er Jahren verlor das mittlerweile in die Jahre gekommene Stadion mit seinem Betonoval an Attraktivität. Auch gingen allgemein die Zuschauerzahlen bei Fußballbegegnungen in Österreich zurück und im Praterstadion fanden, bis auf einige Europacupspiele, zumeist nur mehr Länderspiele statt.

On Delain’s Breakup/new direction

Charlotte’s Statment:

Delain has been my world for nearing 16 years, which is half of my life and my entire career. So it is with a heavy heart that I am confirming that Delain will continue as Martijn’s solo project, and my involvement with Delain ends here.

At this time, I know that you might have questions about the ‘why’ in all of this. I fully understand and respect that. Simply put, it is the sad conclusion of more than a year of trying to find solutions to built up grievances. Part of me feels like I’m letting all of you down, I’d like you to know that this decision was not taken lightly and I apologise to those of you who had high hopes of seeing all of us together live on stage again after lockdown. Until recently, I thought this might still be in the cards for us as well.

In the last 15 years we have released music that we have poured our heart and soul into. We have toured the world, rocked so many stages and met so many wonderful fans; I cherish all of that beyond measure. Every eye locked during a lyric, every front row high five, every after show hug (remember hugs?) From the sweaty hole in the wall to the Wembleys, Wackens, and Paradisos of our career. The memories we - band, crew, fans - have made together, will last forever. And in the end, they are more important to me than the differences that we couldn’t overcome, so that’s where I’d like the focus of the narrative to be.

So where do we go from here? Otto, Timo and Joey are also leaving Delain, but will carry on making music with their own projects. Make sure you’re following what they’re up to. I can’t wait to see and hear how they will take the world by storm. Martijn will continue with Delain, and although it may be painful at first to see a Delain that I’m not a part of, I do wish him the very best in this new chapter. Like any relationship, our creative partnership has required work at times, but it has also been incredibly fruitful and I am grateful for all the things that we made together. Finally, I hope that Delain remains a positive force in everyone’s lives. We Are The Others, always will be, and none of this changes that.

As for myself, I’ll keep writing and performing music. It is the thing that gives me joy and purpose. I’m beyond grateful for my amazing community on Patreon, something that was supposed to be a side project from Delain, but will now be the primary place that I release music and create art and community.

This platform allows me to keep creating independently and I am thankful for all patrons that make this possible. I am dedicated to bring you my absolute best, and look forward to making magic with all of you.

Otto’s Statment:

A year and a day after the last Delain show, it is with heavy heart I inform you all I am no longer part of Delain. Charlotte, Timo and Joey are also no longer part of the band.

I played my very first Delain show in March 2010 in the Garage, London. Almost exactly 10 years later, Timo, Joey and I sent an e-mail to tender our resignation from the band.

Everyone close to us knew that Delain was always a very intense working environment. I could deal with it, because touring with Delain was my biggest passion. And the amazing shows we did, the great fans we had and awesome bands we toured with, all made it worth it. I really started at the bottom when it came to touring, playing for crowds of 10 people, driving thousands of kilometers crammed in a hot and smelly van, and sleeping on the couch at promotor’s houses, so I’ve always been immensely thankful of the level Delain operated on.

In 2018 and 2019 however, the atmosphere in the band deteriorated. This came to an all time low during the 2019 fall tours in the USA and Europe. While these tours were successes in themselves, with great crowd responses, a very good production and amazing road crew, good sales and great (support)bands, it became increasingly clear that Martijn was very unhappy to be on tour, and unhappy about how Delain had developed from his own project, to the band it became. It was obvious to everyone we couldn’t continue in this way.

So now, almost a year after I (and Timo, and Joey,) decided to leave Delain, it’s official. Charlotte is also no longer part of Delain, so Martijn will be continuing Delain on his own. Over the past year I’ve been disappointed, furious, heartbroken, frustrated, and most of all I have just really really missed touring. But as you all know, we all happen to be in that same boat. Around the time we decided to quit, COVID-19 became the monster it is today.

This is by no means goodbye. I may be ‘getting too old for this shit’ but have no intention of retiring! I will definitely do everything to be back on the road whenever COVID-19 measures permit shows again. Meanwhile, I’ll be working on play-through videos and I’ll keep sharing my photography adventures.

A lot of the memories I made over the past 10 years are the very best of my life. I want to thank everyone who was a part of it, Delain fans all over the world, bandmates and road crew, and bands we toured with in particular. I wish Charlotte, Timo, Joey and Martijn the very best in the musical adventures that lay ahead of them. For their stories, check out their and Delain's Facebook statements

Martjin’s Statment:

Delain Goes Back to its Roots.

For the last year or so, the collaboration within the band ceased to work as well as it once had. Some of us were no longer happy with the current roles in the band. We all tried very hard to find a solution for over a year, but sadly we were unable to find one.

As a result, we will all be going our own ways and pursuing our own endeavors. I am very sad our cooperation has come to end, but at the same time I am very grateful for all the years we were able to work together. Together we toured the world, shared highs and lows, and met with many successes as well as times that pushed us to learn and grow. We all enjoyed meeting our fans and making new friends all over the globe. I would like to thank my fellow bandmates and wish Timo, Otto, Joey, and especially Charlotte the very best for the future! And I hope that will mean onwards and upwards to new musical adventures for each of them!

I can’t express my gratitude enough to all of you Delainers that have supported us over so many years. Your dedication to the music and the community you created for us has been overwhelming. Even though this situation is not ideal, change never usually is at first, I hope you will continue to join Delain on its new journey. This is not the end of Delain. It’s the end of a chapter, but also the beginning of a new one.

[ARTICOLO] I più grandi showmen: uno sguardo esclusivo nel mondo dei BTS

“Forse li avrete visti stipati sui divanetti sotto i riflettori di Ellen DeGeneres e di Jimmy Fallon, mentre scambiano battute leggere in due lingue con i presentatori affascinati. Forse è stato quando hanno parlato solennemente della salute mentale e dell’amore per sé stessi all’Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite lo scorso settembre, o quando delle urla da delfino collettive li hanno accolti lo scorso febbraio ai Grammy vestiti con completi simili e con i capelli tinti di varie sfumature color pastello.

O magari è sulla copertina di questo giornale che avete davvero notato i BTS per la prima volta. (Cose più strane sono successe nel 2019). Ma pare inconfutabile affermare che, nel corso degli ultimi due anni, i sette ragazzi hanno conquistato il mondo: due album al primo posto nella classifica Billboard nel giro di tre mesi, più di cinque miliardi di streaming in totale su Apple Music e su Spotify, una serie di concerti sold-out dallo Staples Center di Los Angeles al celebre Wembley Stadium di Londra.

Tutto ciò non li rende propriamente la prima boyband a dominare un periodo culturale, ma il fatto che siano tutti nati e cresciuti in Corea, che cantino in coreano e che solo occasionalmente si può trovare l’inglese nelle loro canzoni ci fa pensare che sia qualcosa di totalmente nuovo. Si parla di un trend mondiale senza precedenti, dove la musica pop si muove senza barriere o confini anche quando la geopolitica sembra ritirarsi ulteriormente dietro linee definite e muri altissimi.

Durante un luminoso giorno di marzo a Seoul, cinque settimane prima del rilascio del loro nuovo mini-album ‘Map of the Soul: Persona’, la band è rintanata nella sua agenzia, la BigHit Entertainment, per prepararsi. Palazzi come questo sono il luogo dove la maggior parte della magia del K-pop avviene, anche se la sede della BigHit, situata in una silenziosa traversa nel distretto di Gangnam (sì, lo stesso di cui Psy ha cantato nella sua hit del 2012 ‘Gangnam Style’) assomiglia molto a qualsiasi altro ufficio informatico: eleganti corridoi ricoperti di cemento e varie sale conferenze dotate di mini-frigoriferi ben riforniti, giocattoli morbidi e qualche poltrona a sacco. Le uniche indicazioni del lavoro che viene svolto in questo luogo sono date da una teca piena di un numero sbalorditivo di targhe di riconoscimento per le vendite e statuette, e una gigantografia patinata dei BTS al loro concerto sold-out al Citi Field di New York dello scorso ottobre.

Alla fine di un lungo corridoio tutti e sette i membri aspettano e si preparano a preregistrare un video di ringraziamento per un premio di iHeartRadio che non hanno avuto la possibilità di ritirare di persona. A Jimin, con i capelli biondo platino e le labbra morbide come cuscini, stanno attentamente piastrando i capelli in una stanza guardaroba colma di attaccapanni con appesi vestiti neon e di jeans. Dozzine di paia di Nike e Converse immacolate sono ammucchiate in un angolo, una solitaria giacca di pelliccia dal colore che ricorda un gelato alla fragola si trova su un appendiabiti dietro di lui, quasi come un Fraggle abbandonato. [N/B: burattini della serie Muppet]

Jungkook, il più piccolo del gruppo a 21 anni, resta obbedientemente seduto su una sedia pieghevole nella sala di danza mentre sistemano i capelli anche a lui. J-Hope appare con una camicia bianca decorata con una stampa oversize di Bart Simpson, poi sorride e sparisce. Suga, V e Jin stanno seduti sui divanetti nella stanza a fianco, guardano il loro telefono e occasionalmente cantano qualche strofa di ‘My Bad’ di Khalid, star americana dell’R&B. Il ventiquattrenne RM, leader di fatto del gruppo e unico fluente nell’inglese, è l’ultimo ad arrivare.

Ripetono il loro discorso davanti ad una telecamera e fanno forse quattro o cinque riprese finché il regista non è soddisfatto. Poi si sistemano in una saletta arieggiata per chiacchierare, accompagnati dal loro storico traduttore, un grande, amabile uomo calvo vestito elegantemente, chiamato John. (Tutte le risposte dei membri, tranne quelle di RM, passano attraverso di lui.)

Dopo molte settimane dai loro primi Grammy sono ancora su di giri per l’esperienza che hanno vissuto: presentare il premio a H.E.R. per il miglior album R&B; chiacchierare con Shawn Mendes nel bagno degli uomini – “Pensavo ‘Devo dirgli chi sono?’” ricorda Jimin “Ma poi lui mi ha salutato per primo. È stato davvero bello” – ed essere seduti ad un lancio di paillettes da Dolly Parton. (“Lei era proprio di fronte a noi!” ricorda meravigliato JungKook “Incredibile.”)

Rimangono ancora felicemente meravigliati dalle altre celebrità e vedere i BTS in carne ed ossa innesca lo stesso disorientante, ma non sgradevole, senso di irrealtà. Sullo schermo la band appare bella in modo sconcertante; una sorta di avatar senza pori, quasi una bellezza postgender che sembra esistere nei loro filtri Snapchat della vita reale. Dal vivo sono comunque esageratamente di bell’aspetto ma in una maniera più riconoscibile, più giovanile: frange scompigliate, occasionalmente con il labbro screpolato o una piccola (okay, minuscola) imperfezione. Se togli le scarpe Balenciaga e le discrete doppie C degli accessori Chanel possono quasi diventare i ragazzi carini che frequentano il college seduti accanto a te in un bar o sul treno.

Se non fosse che i trasporti pubblici o l’andare in uno Starbucks hanno smesso di essere un’opzione per i BTS molto tempo fa. A Seoul le loro facce sono esposte nei negozi di makeup, sui cartelloni per strada e sui lati degli autobus – persino su un enorme cartellone digitale che viene comprato e pagato da privati per festeggiare il compleanno di uno degli amati membri, o anche solo così per farlo. In città come São Paulo, Tokyo e Parigi i fan si accampano fuori per giorni prima di concerti o apparizioni in pubblico, scambiandosi ossessivamente curiosità e avvistamenti. Quando la band ha postato il video per la #InMyFeelingsChallenge di Drake (il loro) è diventato il tweet più piaciuto del 2018. In estate Mattel rilascerà la linea ufficiale di bambole dei BTS.

Nel centro di questo uragano di fama i ragazzi sono riusciti a trovare qualche spazio di normalità. Jimin ricorda nostalgicamente quella volta che a Chicago sono riusciti a sgattaiolare fuori dalle loro stanze d’hotel senza farsi scoprire “in tarda notte, solo per prendere un po’ d’aria.” Ma molti luoghi, ammette, “sono davvero fuori discussione” a meno che non si dividano in piccoli gruppi. “Voglio dire, guardateci,” ha aggiunto RM ridendo e passandosi una mano tra i capelli argento. “Sette ragazzi con i capelli tinti! È davvero troppo.”

Preferiscono focalizzarsi sulle cose che sanno fare come uscire di nascosto per andare a vedere film (“Sempre il primissimo o l’ultimissimo spettacolo del giorno,” dice RM, se vogliono passare inosservati), shopping online (V ama eBay, specialmente per i vestiti), andare a pescare, giocare a StarCraft a casa. Vivere insieme al gruppo è una cosa comune tra i cantanti K-pop e sembra che i BTS apprezzino questa condivisione: “Viviamo insieme da un bel po’ ormai, quasi otto, nove anni,” ha detto Jimin. “All’inizio abbiamo avuto molte discussioni e conflitti, ma abbiamo ormai raggiunto il punto in cui possiamo comunicare senza parole, praticamente ci capiamo guardandoci l’un l’altro o leggendo le espressioni.”

Sebbene siano immancabilmente educati e attenti durante le interviste, c’è una certa quantità di caos contenuto quando si trovano tutti insieme - una sorta di ciclone di cuccioli affetti dalla sindrome da nuotatore fatto di spintoni giocosi, pacche sulla schiena e strette di mano complicate - ma anche una sorprendente e affascinante dolcezza nel modo in cui si trattano a vicenda nei momenti più tranquilli. Quando una domanda viene posta al gruppo, si impegnano duramente per fare in modo che la voce di tutti venga ascoltata e se qualcuno sta avendo difficoltà a trovare una parola, allungano velocemente le braccia per dare un colpetto rassicurante sul ginocchio o un abbraccio di lato.

Perfino con la barriera linguistica presente dovuta al fatto di dover parlare con un giornalista americano, le loro personalità individuali cominciano ad emergere fin dall’inizio. Una volta richiesto loro di nominare il loro primo ricordo pop, le risposte si dirigono nelle direzioni più disparate. “Adoravo ‘Stickwitu’ delle Pussycat Dolls” dice J-Hope, il ballerino più abile del gruppo, schioccando le dita e canticchiando il ritornello. Per RM, che ha cominciato nella scena rap underground di Seul, è “Love Yourself” di Eminem. (“Penso che sia tipo la scelta della vita per così tante persone in giro per il mondo” ammette “ma non posso dimenticare il giorno in cui ho guardato per la prima volta 8 Mile e ho sentito il suono delle chitarre. Quella è stata la mia svolta.”). Per Jungkook, che ha rilasciato cover di canzoni di Justin Bieber e Troye Sivan, è la ballad immortale della Lite-FM (N/B: una stazione radio che manda in onda solo canzoni pop) “Now and Forever” di Richard Marx.

Suga dalla voce dolce cita “Imagine” di John Lennon in quanto “prima canzone di cui mi sono innamorato” e il momento diventa l’occasione appropriata per chiedere dove i BTS si vedano nel pantheon dei rubacuori musicali che i Fantastici Quattro hanno essenzialmente inventato. “A volte è davvero imbarazzante quando qualcuno ci chiama i Beatles del XXI secolo o cose del genere”, ammette RM. “Ma se vorranno chiamarci boy band allora saremo una boy band. Se vorranno chiamarci gruppo maschile allora saremo un gruppo maschile. Se vorranno chiamarci K-pop allora a noi starà bene K-pop.” Ah, il K-pop. In Corea del Sud, dove il genere è diventato non solo un eccellente prodotto culturale ma anche un export dal valore di miliardi di dollari, i giocatori noti come “idol” si sottopongono ad un'istruzione alla Saranno Famosi (N/B: un famoso film che narra le vicende di un gruppo di aspiranti cantanti, attori e ballerini) in canto e ballo e allenamenti che spesso vanno avanti per anni prima di essere considerati pronti per il palcoscenico. Tutto ciò ha i suoi risultati: il business sta prosperando dall’inizio degli anni 90, grazie a star che vanno dalle Girls’ Generation a G-Dragon e che hanno attratto vari mercati attraverso tutta l’Asia, l’Europa e il continente americano. Tuttavia, mentre il sound è rimasto piuttosto coerente - un mix astuto di beat pronti per le discoteche, cori super addolciti e le inflessioni più urbane dell’hip-hop e dell’R&B occidentali - non è mai atterrato con lo stesso impatto fulmineo dei BTS.

Bang Sihyuk, il CEO e fondatore della Big Hit, ha cominciato a mettere insieme il gruppo nel 2010, quando tutti i membri erano o ventenni o adolescenti: RM e Suga stavano iniziando a farsi conoscere nella scena locale; Jimin e J-Hope studiavano danza nelle accademie dedite alle arti dello spettacolo; V, che si è concentrato sul canto fin dai primi periodi, si è aggiunto ufficialmente nel 2013 (N/B: la data potrebbe essere inesatta.). Jin era un aspirante attore reclutato in mezzo alla strada per il suo aspetto sconvolgente; Jungkook, ora uno dei principali vocalist del gruppo, si è unito quando andava ancora alle scuole medie.

Sebbene i fansite tentino di fare affidamento sulle loro differenze extracurriculari (Jungkook è un Vergine che adora la pizza! V colleziona cravatte e sbatte i denti mentre dorme!), ognuno dei membri è genuinamente responsabile di un ruolo unico nel processo creativo del gruppo, indipendentemente che si tratti della produzione, della scrittura dei testi o dei maxi motivi musicali su cui si basano le canzoni.

“Con sette membri abbiamo sette gusti differenti, ovviamente” dice RM. “Perciò quando si tratta di scrivere testi è come una grande competizione.” Talvolta, aggiunge J-Hope, “scriviamo dei versi e decidiamo che ‘Questo un po’ riflette meglio chi sono e il mio colore’, perciò vogliamo tenerli per canzoni da solisti.”

Siccome la Big Hit non limita il loro diritto a incanalare alcune idee in progetti secondari - e siccome l'appetito online per materiale fornito dai BTS è apparentemente insaziabile - i membri regolarmente rilasciano lavori da solisti attraverso EP, SoundCloud e mixtape. Ma l'impatto primario arriva sempre attraverso le uscite degli album ufficiali e gli argomenti particolarmente profondi di cui trattano le canzoni - una deviazione notevole dai limitati argomenti, talvolta strenuamente ottimistici, di cui gli altri artisti K-pop solitamente trattano.

“Ho promesso ai membri sin dall’inizio che la musica dei BTS debba provenire dalle loro storie personali” dice Bang; la loro conseguente apertura sulle loro difficoltà con depressione, insicurezza e la pressione a conformarsi li ha portati addirittura fino alle Nazioni Unite lo scorso autunno dove RM ha menzionato la campagna della band Love Myself e la collaborazione con l'UNICEF #ENDviolence destinata ai giovani.

“Si fanno notare,” dice il DJ e produttore nippo-americano Steve Aoki, un artista dance primo nelle vendite mondiali che ha anche collaborato con il gruppo su diverse tracce. “E non sto parlando solo di K-pop. Aggiungono così tanta personalità alla musica, nelle loro storie e in come si presentano. E il mondo si è innamorato di loro perché mostrano quel lato vulnerabile che tutti vogliono vedere.”

Aiuta anche che i messaggi più evidenziati dal gruppo spesso siano fatti scivolare nell'aura appiccicosa di inni come “No More Dream”, “Dope” e “Am I Wrong”. Ma apprezzano sempre l'opportunità, dice Suga, di diventare “un po’ più schietti, un po’ più aperti.” RM elabora: “Penso sia un dilemma interminabile per ogni artista quanto essere franchi ed onesti. Ma noi cerchiamo di rivelarci il più possibile.”

Ovviamente l'onestà ha i suoi limiti quando sei la più la grande band nel mondo. Chiesti di descrivere il nuovo album, in uscita il 12 aprile (alla stampa, ha già raggiunto i 2,5 milioni di preordini), i membri offrono indizi criptici ma entusiastici come “terapeutico” e “vivacità rinfrescante.” Ad essere sinceri, non possono dir molto in parte perché la scaletta dell'album non è ancora stata realmente completata - decisioni dell'ultimo minuto un lusso di produzioni fatte in casa - anche se sono d'accordo sul riprodurre una canzone, un pezzo propulsivo e pieno di rap chiamato “Intro: Persona.” (È stato rilasciato come teaser il 27 marzo.)

Quando si tratta di domande più personali riguardanti le difficoltà degli appuntamenti o gli obiettivi che potrebbero voler perseguire dopo i BTS, virano con così tanta grazia verso risposte evasive e non specifiche che è quasi difficile non rimanere impressionati; è come guardare una diplomatica coreografia su ghiaccio. Vogliono far sapere che sono incredibilmente grati per la devozione dei loro fan e sono così fortunati ad essere esattamente dove si trovano; che non pensano veramente a pianificare i prossimi 5/10 anni.

Diventano tuttavia più riflessivi quando viene tirato fuori l’argomento della classifica Hot100 dei singoli, il Sacro Graal del pop americano. Lo scorso anno, con “Fake Love”, si sono guadagnati un posto tra le prime dieci posizioni, ma non hanno ancora raggiunto quelle più alte, soprattutto dal momento che le stazioni radio più importanti degli Stati Uniti continuano a passare poco la loro musica, il che è un fattore che incide molto sulle posizioni di suddetta classifica.

“Dovrà essere una canzone grandiosa”, riconosce Suga, “ma d’altra parte c’è tutta una strategia da applicare per poter scalare quella classifica e serve una certa dose di fortuna, ovviamente. Per questo motivo quello che conta per noi è solo fare buona musica, buone performance e combinare insieme questi due elementi.” Chiediamo loro se un successo in lingua spagnola del 2017 come “Despacito”, canzone rimasta al primo posto per la cifra record di sedici settimane consecutive, li renda più ottimisti. “Sa, il pop latino-americano ha i suoi Grammy, in America, ed è un po’ diverso”, dice pensieroso RM. “Non voglio fare paragoni, ma credo che in quanto gruppo asiatico sia ancora più difficile. I nostri obiettivi sono la Hot100 e una nomination ai Grammy. Sono solo obiettivi, però, non vogliamo cambiare la nostra identità e la nostra genuinità per arrivare primi. Se ad esempio noi cominciassimo a cantare unicamente in inglese, o cambiassimo altre cose, non saremmo più i BTS. Faremo tutto il possibile, ci proveremo, ma se non dovessimo guadagnare il primo posto o il quinto, andrebbe bene comunque”.

Aoki, invece, è convinto del fatto che riusciranno a raggiungere questo traguardo. [Ha detto infatti:] “Penso che sia al cento per cento possibile che una canzone cantata interamente in coreano arrivi in cima alla classifica Hot100. È qualcosa a cui credo fermamente, come credo fermamente al fatto che i BTS siano quel gruppo in grado di farcela. Spianerebbero la strada a tanti altri, cosa che comunque stanno già facendo, e quando questo accadrà, ci sarà da festeggiare”.   

Ma di ritorno alla BigHit, il gruppo ha un lavoro molto più immediato da fare. RM ci concede la possibilità di fare un veloce tour del suo studio (ogni membro ha uno spazio a lui dedicato nell’edificio). La porta d’accesso è sorvegliata da uno stravagante raggruppamento di statuine realizzate dal rinomato street artist KAWS, ma entrando, in modo piuttosto contraddittorio, sembra di mettere piede in un piccolo, lussuoso lodge del Sundance in cui per puro caso c’è anche un mixer: troviamo un bel tavolino da caffè realizzato con un unico pezzo di legno di noce nero, tappeti in stile Navajo, opere d’arte di buon gusto sulle pareti. RM parla con nonchalance della sua ammirazione per produttori come Zedd e i The Neptunes (“Pharrell Williams e Chad Hugo erano davvero i miei idoli tra il 2006 e il 2007. E la voce di Pharrell! Il suo modo di cantare è così sexy!”, dice), e poi ci mostra di cosa è capace (“nel fare i beat Suga è decisamente più bravo di me. Non so nemmeno suonare il piano, faccio solo gli accordi così”, insiste imitando il personaggio dei “Muppet” che digita istericamente sulla tastiera).

Si torna nella sala prove dove i membri, dopo essersi cambiati per indossare pantaloni della tuta e magliette, sono pronti per rivedere alcuni passi con un coreografo. Si deve all’Inghilterra, la culla del calcio, la creazione della Coppa delle Coppe, il cui nome ufficiale, di derivazione inglese, è Coppa dei vincitori di Coppa (Cup Winners Cup). Infatti dopo il varo della Coppa dei Campioni nel 1955 e della Coppa delle Fiere, che in seguito diventerà Coppa Uefa, sempre nel medesimo anno, furono proprio gli inglesi, ai quali quella Coppa dei Campioni inizialmente dominata dal Real Madrid e dai club latini proprio non piaceva, a caldeggiare l’i potesi di creare una manifestazione che premiasse le squadre vincitrici della Coppa del proprio Paese.

In Inghilterra infatti la Coppa nazionale (FA Cup) gode di maggiore importanza rispetto al campionato, vuoi per la tradizione (la prima edizione si giocò nel 1872), vuoi per il fatto che tutte le squadre d’Inghilterra, comprese quelle dilettanti, possono parteciparvi, vuoi infine per il fascino della finale che si gioca sempre a Wembley e che vede i vincitori premiati da un membro della famiglia reale sul palco d’onore dello stadio londinese. L’intenzione degli inglesi era di creare una sorta di prosecuzione alla loro Coppa nazionale in campo internazionale.

La proposta avanzata dai membri delle federazioni britanniche non ebbe un grande successo, almeno al l’inizio. La prima edizione del torneo vide l’iscrizi ne solamente di dieci squadre e non venne gestita dall’Uefa bensì da un comitato rappresentante le partecipanti. Questa mancanza di interesse nei confronti della nuova competizione era da rintracciarsi nel fatto che la Coppa nazionale in molti Paesi europei non godeva della stessa importanza e interesse rispetto al campionato, come avveniva invece in Inghilterra e più in generale sull’isola britannica.

Le dieci formazioni pioniere della Coppa furono Austria Vienna, Borussia Monchengladbach, Dinamo Zagabria, Ferencvaros, Fiorentina, Lucerna, Rangers Glasgow, Stella Rossa Brno, Vorwarts di Berlino Est e Wolverhampton Wanderers. Il regolamento della prima edizione prevedeva un turno preliminare per scremare il numero delle formazioni da dieci a otto e rendere così attuabile un torneo a eliminazione diretta sul doppio confronto, con quarti di finale, semifinali e finale. La finale era anch’essa prevista in due partite di andata e ritorno, più l’eventuale spareggio in campo neutro. La Fiorentina fu la prima formazione a vincere questo trofeo al termine della doppia finale con i Rangers Glasgow.

I problemi che avevano contraddistinto la nascita di questa manifestazione furono presto superati, il pubblico rispose in maniera positiva affollando gli stadi oltre le più rosee aspettative, i proventi derivanti dalla manifestazione furono elevati e già dalla seconda edizione il numero delle partecipanti salì a ventitré, quindi ventiquattro l’anno seguente per poi stabilizzarsi a quota tren­tadue. Con il passare degli anni l’Uefa riuscì nel suo intento di issare la Coppa delle Coppe al secondo posto come importanza per ciò che riguardava le coppe europee, alle spalle della Coppa dei Campioni e davanti alla Coppa Uefa. Fino all’inizio degli anni Novanta la manifestazione ha mantenuto questo valore, poi però nel calcio hanno cominciato a prevalere interessi economici e l’Uefa ha deciso di fondere Coppa Coppe e Coppa Uefa in un’unica competizione, chiamata prima Coppa Uefa e poi Europa League, sancendo di fatto la scomparsa della Coppa delle Coppe.

Attenti perché qui ci sono grandi sorprese! Partiamo dai danesi che contro il Galles sono letteralmente uno spettacolo per gli occhi. Una grande voglia di far bene sia per il proprio paese ma anche per il compagno Eriksen, stanno trascinando questi ragazzi in un qualcosa di storico. Potremmo rivedere un remake di Euro 1992? Staremo a vedere! Seconda grande promossa è la Repubblica Ceca. Qui il coefficiente di difficoltà si alza perché i cechi hanno avuto la meglio per 2 a 0 sull'Olanda ovvero una delle nazionali candidate alla vittoria finale. Pragmatici, compatti e senza sbavature ma soprattutto quando De Ligt si fa buttare fuori hanno il grande merito di aver colpito nel momento giusto. Ora saranno proprio Danimarca e Repubblica Ceca a darsi battaglia tra di loro per un posto nelle semifinali. Chiunque vincerà potrà continua a sperare nel sogno europeo! Parafrasando una celebre frase del calcio italiano: "Clamoroso a Bucarest!". Che altro potremmo dire dell'impresa che ha compiuto la Svizzera andando ad eliminare i campioni del mondo in carica della Francia? Una nazionale, quella di Petkovic, che dopo il vantaggio iniziale era poi andata sotto addirittura sul 3 a 1 ma non ha mollato ed il pareggio è arrivato nei minuti. Insomma, per gli spagnoli tantissima fatica e ai quarti se la vedranno con una Svizzera alla caccia di grandi imprese (chiedere alla Francia per informazioni) I grandi bocciati Arriviamo alle note dolenti e questa volta sono veramente gravi. Prima tra tutte, l'Olanda. Gli oranges giocano una pessima gara contro la Repubblica Ceca che punisce gli avversari ad ogni minimo errore. La partita poi subisce un punto di svolta quando De Ligt decide di farsi espellere lasciando i suoi in 10 nel momento peggiore della partita. Il match poi si chiuderà con un 2 a 0 a favore dei cechi decretando il grande fallimento arancione. Tutto da rifare per l'Olanda che probabilmente potrebbe avere un cambio di guida tecnica. Passiamo al Galles che non riesce a confermare le semifinali di Euro 2016 fermandosi già agli ottavi di finale contro una Danimarca decisamente troppo forte per loro. Bale non è quello della fase a gironi, Ramsey sembra con la mente da un'altra parte e il resto dei compagni fa veramente poco. ed ecco che la sconfitta è servita! Altra delusione arriva dalla Croazia che conclude nel peggiore dei modi un europeo che li ha visti protagonisti di pessimi partite. Anthony Joshua says facing Tyson Fury at Wembley Stadium in a “best of Britain” match-up would be his dream fight. Joshua first aims to regain his IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles from Andy Ruiz Jr in a December 7 rematch in Saudi Arabia. Juni 2019 unterlag er überraschend gegen den Amerikaner mexikanischer Herkunft Andy Ruiz Jr. durch Technischen K.o. in der siebten Runde und verlor dadurch seine Weltmeistertitel. Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua, OBE (* 15. Oktober 1989 in Watford, England) ist ein britischer Boxer und ehemaliger Weltmeister im Schwergewicht nach Version der IBF, WBA, WBO und IBO. Er wurde 2011 Amateur-Vizeweltmeister und 2012 Olympiasieger im Superschwergewicht. Joshua wird von Robert McCracken trainiert. Anthony Joshua wurde als Sohn nigerianischer Einwanderer in Watford im Nordwesten von London geboren und wuchs gemeinsam mit zwei Schwestern und einem Bruder in seinem Geburtsort auf. Er verließ die Schule vorzeitig und begann eine Lehre als Maurer. Seine Jugend beschrieb er als „außerordentlich glücklich“, dennoch rutschte er in das kriminelle Milieu ab und war in Schlägereien und Brandstiftungen verwickelt. Seinen ersten Profikampf bestritt er am 5. Oktober 2013 in London gegen Emanuele Leo (Bilanz: 8-0-0) und gewann durch K. o. in der ersten Runde. Im September 2014 gewann er vorzeitig gegen Konstantin Airich. Im Oktober desselben Jahres schlug er Denis Bachtow durch TKO in Runde 2 und sicherte sich den internationalen Titel der WBC. Gegen Michael Sprott gewann er in einem BBBofC-Eliminator im November 2014 bereits in der ersten Runde. Im Mai 2015 besiegte er Kevin Johnson vorzeitig in Runde 2 und verteidigte damit erstmals seinen WBC-International-Titel. Johnson musste in der ersten Runde insgesamt zweimal zu Boden, beim zweiten Mal fiel er mit dem Oberkörper sogar durch die Ringseile. Am 29. April 2017 kämpfte Anthony Joshua vor 90.000 Zuschauern im Wembley Stadion gegen Wladimir Klitschko. Es ging um die Verteidigung des IBF-Titels sowie um die vakanten Titel des IBO und des WBA-Superchampions. Joshua konnte den Kampf durch technischen K. o. in der 11. Runde gewinnen, nachdem beide Boxer in der fünften bzw. in der sechsten Runde zu Boden gegangen waren und angezählt hatten werden müssen. Dieser Kampf war der bisher längste in seiner Profikarriere; zuvor war kein anderer Gegner über die 7. Runde hinaus gekommen. Für den 28. Oktober 2017 war eine Titelverteidigung seiner Weltmeisterschaftstitel gegen den Bulgaren Kubrat Pulew geplant. Dieser musste jedoch knapp zwei Wochen vor dem Kampf verletzungsbedingt absagen. Als Ersatzgegner für den 28. Oktober wurde der für Frankreich antretende Kameruner Carlos Takam gefunden. DELAIN's MARTIJN WESTERHOLT Announces End Of Band's Most Recent Lineup: 'The Others Have Chosen To Pursue Different Paths'

DELAIN keyboardist Martijn Westerholt has announced the dissolution of the band's most recent lineup. Going forward, Martijn plans to "keep DELAIN alive" by taking it back to a project form, releasing music with special guests.

Westerholt broke the news of the end of the latest DELAIN lineup in a social media post earlier today. He wrote: "For the last year or so, the collaboration within the band ceased to work as well as it once had. Some of us were no longer happy with the current roles in the band. We all tried very hard to find a solution for over a year, but sadly we were unable to find one. As a result, we will all be going our own ways and pursuing our own endeavors.

"I am very sad our cooperation has come to end, but at the same time I am very grateful for all the years we were able to work together. Together we toured the world, shared highs and lows, and met with many successes as well as times that pushed us to learn and grow. We all enjoyed meeting our fans and making new friends all over the globe. I would like to thank my fellow bandmates and wish Timo, Otto, Joey, and especially Charlotte the very best for the future. And I hope that will mean onwards and upwards to new musical adventures for each of them!

"That being said, DELAIN will live on. The others have chosen to pursue different paths. I have decided to keep DELAIN alive by continuing on with writing and producing the music for DELAIN as I always have. I started DELAIN as a project in 2002 and for the next album I will take it back to a project form, releasing music with special guests. As it looks now many familiar faces will be returning to join me on this journey.

"I can't express my gratitude enough to all of you Delainers that have supported us over so many years. Your dedication to the music and the community you created for us has been overwhelming. Even though this situation is not ideal, change never usually is at first, I hope you will continue to join DELAIN on its new journey. This is not the end of DELAIN. It's the end of a chapter, but also the beginning of a new one."

Singer Charlotte Wessels said: "DELAIN has been my world for nearing 16 years, which is half of my life and my entire career. So it is with a heavy heart that I am confirming that DELAIN will continue as Martijn's solo project, and my involvement with DELAIN ends here.

"At this time, I know that you might have questions about the 'why' in all of this. I fully understand and respect that. Simply put, it is the sad conclusion of more than a year of trying to find solutions to built up grievances. Part of me feels like I'm letting all of you down, I'd like you to know that this decision was not taken lightly and I apologise to those of you who had high hopes of seeing all of us together live on stage again after lockdown. Until recently, I thought this might still be in the cards for us as well.

"In the last 15 years we have released music that we have poured our heart and soul into. We have toured the world, rocked so many stages and met so many wonderful fans; I cherish all of that beyond measure. Every eye locked during a lyric, every front row high five, every after show hug (remember hugs?) From the sweaty hole in the wall to the Wembleys, Wackens, and Paradisos of our career. The memories we — band, crew, fans — have made together, will last forever. And in the end, they are more important to me than the differences that we couldn't overcome, so that's where I'd like the focus of the narrative to be.

"So where do we go from here? Otto, Timo and Joey are also leaving DELAIN, but will carry on making music with their own projects. Make sure you're following what they're up to. I can't wait to see and hear how they will take the world by storm. Martijn will continue with DELAIN, and although it may be painful at first to see a DELAIN that I'm not a part of, I do wish him the very best in this new chapter. Like any relationship, our creative partnership has required work at times, but it has also been incredibly fruitful and I am grateful for all the things that we made together. Finally, I hope that DELAIN remains a positive force in everyone's lives. We Are The Others, always will be, and none of this changes that.

"As for myself, I'll keep writing and performing music. It is the thing that gives me joy and purpose.

"I'm beyond grateful for my amazing community on Patreon, something that was supposed to be a side project from DELAIN, but will now be the primary place that I release music and create art and community. This platform allows me to keep creating independently and I am thankful for all patrons that make this possible. I am dedicated to bring you my absolute best, and look forward to making magic with all of you.

DELAIN's sixth full-length album, the Westerholt-produced "Apocalypse & Chill", was released in February 2020 via Napalm Records. The 13-track recording features guest vocals by BEAST IN BLACK singer Yannis Papadopoulos on the song "Vengeance". Upon its release, the album reached the Top 50 in several European countries, including Switzerland (No. 8), Germany (No. 14) and the band's native country, The Netherlands (No. 24).
