Un articolo pubblicato sulla rivista "Nano Letters" riporta la dimostrazione delle possibilità di un telescopio dotato di una metalente. Un team di ricercatori ha prodotto una metalente da 80 millimetri, una struttura che schemi superficiali simili ad antenne che concentrano la luce per ingrandire oggetti distanti. Rispetto alle lenti classiche, hanno il grande vantaggio di essere estremamente sottili.

Finora, le metalenti erano limitate a dimensioni molto ridotte dovute a problemi di produzione ma questo studio ha sviluppato una tecnica per produrre metalenti da 80 millimetri utilizzabili in telescopi. Si tratta di una tecnica di fotolitografia ultravioletta profonda (in inglese deep ultraviolet (DUV) photolithography) del tipo usato per produrre microprocessori adattata per produrre metalenti.
