LBFAD is the most inspiring series I have ever watched and here is why…

Although Love Between Fairy and Devil (LBFAD) only caught my eye on Netflix in December 2023, I’m so glad it did and that I didn’t miss out on this stunning and thought-provoking masterpiece. It is the most inspiring series I have ever watched for many reasons. Aesthetically, I found the beautiful 4K production quality as enjoyable as high-budget productions such as Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. I frequently felt the need to pause and admire the well-designed sets, and exquisitely detailed costumes of even minor characters. The acting is superb across the board, and the leads act and respond very naturally to each other. The long hair of male characters is especially well-done, falling naturally with subtle highlights and looks real. All these details breathe life into this fantasy world and make it very realistic.

Every line of each song from the phenomenal OST is brimming with hidden meanings related to the series, adding lots of additional context! The artwork created for the opening and ending themes is also full of meaning (minor spoilers ahead). Take, for example, the last picture where the OTP are sitting on a boat in the Oblivion River, the junction between their two tribes, the male lead has removed his crown and hence his responsibilities at least for the moment, and they are watching the sunrise together for the rest of eternity after the close of the series (sigh!)

Every single character of note in the series goes through profound character growth, the only exception being the abstract ultimate villain Taisui. Even the secondary villains and dictator of Shuiyuntian have grown and changed their perceptions by the end. It made me believe that anyone is capable of opening their minds and bettering themselves. Both lead and side characters are repeatedly faced with overwhelmingly bleak choices and heartbreaking challenges, especially in the last ten episodes. Yet every time, they show courage, sacrifice and selfless love that is amazing and very inspiring.

It is rare to find this kind of poignance in any production. I used to find Game of Thrones inspiring due to Daenerys freeing the world of slavery…until Season 8 happened. LBFAD tops Game of Thrones in this regard by freeing two distinct realms from conflict. The actions of the OTP break through a hundred millenia of mutual hatred and relentless conflict between their people with no end in sight, to create a new dawn of lasting peace. LBFAD reminds me of Lord of the Rings in terms of its cinematographic beauty and themes of never losing hope and prevailing over overwhelming odds. However, the stronger focus of LBFAD on the lead couple’s development and on creating multidimensional villains and side characters made it, for me, more engaging to watch.

The world-building and depth of characters has many layers in LBFAD, to the extent that much of the context was clear to me only in retrospect on rewatching the series and on deep reflection. The fast pace of the series also means that a lot of action occurs off-screen in between scenes. There are no filler scenes, there is no room for them. Every scene adds new plot twists and depth to characters, making the series highly addictive.

I am not a native mandarin speaker, and came to realise how beautiful the language is only on encountering LBFAD and its OST. It inspired me to learn mandarin, which makes rewatching the series highly enjoyable as I am able to pick up new nuances. I’m embarrassed to be so late to watch LBFAD after its release in 2022, but have thoroughly enjoyed the posts on Tumblr from fellow fans, including episode analyses, enthralling artwork and links to fanfiction. It has encouraged me to post on Tumblr myself. I have started to post my reflections on each episode while rewatching them, translations and overviews. I am thrilled to be a part of this wonderful community!

it's Johnshi time (again!). here's the OTP meme I used. brief mentions of MK1 story spoilers in answers for 3, 9, 17, and 19. enjoy!

1) who can outdrink the other? Kenshi. Johnny has had his fair share of alcohol, but Kenshi built up a tolerance for it while he was in the Yakuza. now, unless it's something incredibly strong, he can hold his own longer than Johnny can.

2) who says “I love you” more? Johnny. he's better with his words and is very vocal about how he feels. he tells Kenshi he loves him at least three times a day without fail. Kenshi loves the assurance <3

3) who has trouble sleeping alone? Johnny. he can sleep alone, but it just takes longer. it's because he was in a relationship for quite a long time before his divorce and went from sleeping with his wife every night to having an empty bed. it's an adjustment, and then it's a blessing once Kenshi starts sleeping over.

4) who swears more? JOHNNY. good god, Johnny swears constantly. Kenshi swears on occasion, but it's rarely more than something like "damn" or "ass" whereas Johnny probably says "fuck" and "shit" every single day.

5) who does more of the housework? Kenshi. Johnny generally keeps a tidy space, as does Kenshi, but Kenshi is more likely to clean up if needed. Johnny isn't lazy, just busy, so he almost always helps if he's home.

6) who forgets their anniversary? Johnny. his memory is nearly impeccable until it comes to a specific date, and then he struggles. if he's reminded, like with a calendar or a notification in his phone, then he's good.

7) who steals the duvet in their sleep? it is an intense brawl every night until Johnny invests in a massive blanket. even then, the brawl continues, and it's usually started by Kenshi. Johnny will wake up to barely any blanket and Kenshi nearly fully covered from head to toe. he calls foul!

8) who keeps the other awake at night with their snoring? Kenshi; Johnny doesn't really snore. he's not consistently snoring, but he can get pretty loud sometimes. thankfully, Johnny got used to it quickly.

9) who finds stray animals and begs the other to let them keep them? Kenshi has never had a pet before and wants one so badly. I love the idea of Johnny growing up with cats, though he doesn't have one now, but he imagines that he will have one very soon. Kenshi always pets stray cats if he sees them when he's out somewhere. (Johnny has a parakeet according to an intro with Rain, so he lets Kenshi hang out with her a lot. Kenshi adores her <3 and she definitely seems to like him too, always chirping like crazy when he's over.)

10) who usually makes dinner? Johnny. he loves cooking and is very good at it. Kenshi doesn't know much about cooking but Johnny is always happy to teach him.

11) who plays their music out loud? Johnny. if he's working out at home or cooking, he'll play music on a Bluetooth speaker. their music tastes mostly align, so Kenshi has no problem with it.

12) who hogs the bathroom? Johnny. this man's skin routine is in-depth and lengthy. it's no wonder he looks so damn good! Kenshi's bathroom routine is usually short unless he needs to shave, then it can take some time. even then, Johnny takes longer.

13) who gives the most compliments? Johnny. again, he is a lot more vocal about how he feels, and he will gladly shower Kenshi with compliments, ranging from his abilities to his looks (heavily on the looks; Kenshi is damn sexy!). he always knows just what to say to get Kenshi to blush.

15) who isn’t afraid to embarrass the other in public? Johnny will unintentionally embarrass Kenshi with the attention he gets in public alone. Kenshi does not like the intense public attention; he's not built for the celebrity life. Johnny understands that and knows it's not for everyone, so he won't ever embarrass him on purpose, but it still happens from time to time, and he's always sorry. however, if they're not in public, Johnny will do and say anything to get Kenshi embarrassed.

16) who gives the other cringeworthy pet names? Johnny. he loves calling Kenshi something absolutely ridiculous and seeing his reaction to it. he sticks with "Ken doll" or just his name for the most part, but every now and then, he'll change it up.

17) who fusses over takes care of the other when they get sick? while they will both take care of one another, Johnny is more likely to get fussy with Kenshi. we saw in the story for MK1 that when Kenshi is vulnerable and injured, he takes on a softer voice and is a lot more gentle than I would argue he is normally. the same applies when Kenshi is feeling under the weather. he's bad to get up and wander around, and Johnny is always there to help him back to bed. he'll sit on the bed with him with a cold rag and keep him company until he falls asleep, holding his hand the entire time. Kenshi doesn't like carrying Sento around when he feels sick, so Johnny has to give him an extra hand. he's thankfully very patient and would do anything Kenshi needs him to do!

18) who finds it impossible to stay angry at the other for long? Kenshi. he loves Johnny more than anyone in the world, and there's very little that Johnny could do to make him angry for too long. Johnny isn't perfect, and he does stupid things often, but Kenshi hates being mad at him. they try to be strong communicators when things go south.

19) who clings to the other for comfort when they’re sad or scared? when Kenshi has a nightmare, often about his blinding or their brief time in Shang Tsung's laboratory, or possibly even something he went through when he was part of the Yakuza, he needs to know that Johnny is there with his own senses. he is usually panicking and frazzled, and all he wants is Johnny. he will hold him as tightly as possible until what he's feeling eases up, and even then, he refuses to let go for quite some time. Johnny would let him hold on forever.

20) who is more ‘physically passionate’? (hugs, kisses, or maybe more…) Kenshi. he's always touching Johnny in some way, whether it's hand-holding, a hand on his shoulder, or a gentle hand on his face when they're kissing. his use of touch is something he takes seriously, and it's important for him to utilize touch to bond with Johnny. Johnny absolutely loves it when Kenshi has his hands on him and will gladly let Kenshi do what he wants.

3 Ships You Like:

Luca and Vincenzo. They're my rare pair hell ship and I'll keep it afloat singlehandedly if I have to. Luckily I don't, because there's two of us holding up the fort on Ao3, and @ristique-xy and I are basically feeding each other at this point.

For those of you who haven't seen it, Vincenzo is a Korean drama from 2021. Vincenzo is the main character and Luca has like 5-10 minutes of screen time in the entire series. Nothing can convince me that they're not murderous lovers for life.

Yoh and Mizuki from My Personal Weatherman. I watched it, moved on, and then was reminded of it after a certain picture and discussion with @candidamay, which made me go back and rewatched MPW and now I'm trying to write a fic for them. It is resisting me but I shall employ stubbornness and persevere.

Kinnporsche. Again, I watched the show when it came out and moved on. Now incredible fanfics (go read Bad Bet by @luckydragon10 and The Power In The Taking by @iffervescent. Both are excellent and very NSFW - proceed with caution and heed the tags) and tumblr in general are slowly making me slide down the slippery slope into the fandom. Can't say I'm putting up any resistance. The Kinnporsche plotbunnies are breeding in my already overpopulated head.

First Ship Ever:

My first ship must be something like 15+ years ago, so I really don't remember. Also, I don't think I've ever been big on exclusively shipping one pair of characters, so OTPs aren't really my thing. I tend to pick one favourite character and then ship them with pretty much any other character depending on what dynamic I want in the moment. I still do, but now I've started entertaining the idea of just throwing them all together in one big poly relationship.

Characters ask: 12 dancing princesses

Favorite thing about them: The beautiful, romantic imagery of all the princesses venturing into a magical subterranean land where the trees are made of silver, gold, and diamonds, and then dancing through the night with mysterious handsome princes. I like the imagery better than the story itself.

Least favorite thing about them: That they let all the princes who try to discover their secret be beheaded. It's no wonder that retellings tend to omit this part and just have the failed princes either sent away in disgrace or imprisoned instead.

Three things I have in common with them:

*I like parties and music.

*I tend to be a freedom-seeker.

*I'm in no hurry to marry.

Three things I don't have in common with them:

*I'm not a very good dancer.

*I would never let even one man be beheaded just so I could attend secret parties, let alone many men.

*I don't have any sisters, let alone eleven.

Random headcanon: For the Faerie Tale Theatre version, where all the characters are more sympathetic than in the Grimms' tale, I like @ariel-seagull-wings' headcanon that the princesses' parents were Cinderella and her Prince, now King. The eldest princess looks especially like their mother – since in this version she's played by Lesley Ann Warren, the 1965 Rodgers and Hammerstein Cinderella – and they've all inherited her love of ballroom dancing. But since Cinderella died, her grieving husband has become overprotective of his daughters, leading to the plot.

Unpopular opinion: I don't mind the fact that this tale is so rarely adapted, because it's not a particular favorite of mine, mainly because the ending falls flat. We never learn who the mysterious dancing princes were; there's just a vague statement at the end implying that they're under a curse, and that it's extended as their punishment for having danced with the princesses, but with no explanation of who cursed them or how they suffer from it. The princesses never redeem themselves for having caused so many men's deaths – at least in other stories with similar plot points, like Turandot, the princess has a transformative "learning to love" moment which is missing here. The eldest princess is married to the soldier as his reward, with no choice for her and no sense of romance, and this is portrayed as a happy ending, even though she and her sisters were willing to kill him rather than be forced to marry him.

So far, every adaptation I've seen has been an improvement, IMHO. First and foremost by removing the "every man who fails to learn the princesses' secret is beheaded" plot point, secondly by giving the soldier an actual romance arc with the eldest princess, and thirdly by changing the ending or at least giving it more depth. My introduction to the story was the anime Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics, where the princes turn out to be disguised demons luring the princesses to their doom, and the soldier fights them off and helps the princesses escape, earning the eldest princess's love by doing so. That twist might be melodramatic, but at least it gives the story a proper climax and emotional payoff. Then there's the Faerie Tale Theatre version, where the princes are dream figures created by the princesses in a magic ritual, and where the princesses' nightly outings are sympathetic, because their overprotective father needs to learn to let them grow up, go dancing, and meet young men in their own world. That's a good alternative too. (I don't have anything to say about the Barbie version because I've never seen it.) Basically, I think it's a story with great potential, but which needs adaptation expansion.

I have a rare otp in an older fandom that recently got a reboot. (One half of the otp never appeared in the original series, but their bond with the protagonist was built up above all others in the reboot. It was a trip.) I have noticed that most of the fic for the pairing tends to be fluff, slice of life, idiots in love, etc. Nothing too heavy or dark. Which is fine because the characters go through so much in canon. Yesterday while poking around in their tag, I happened upon a shipweek from back when thevreboot started run by a trio of bnfs that insisted all the submissions only be pg, and weren't allowed to address any dark themes that might be upsetting to any younger fans. For a character whose canon backstory is nothing but familial trauma, physical, mental and (implied) sexual abuse and who's friendship with the other half of the ship starts with them bonding over similar traumas. I was flabbergasted and now wonder how much those authors influenced what everyone else writes since they are far and away the most popular authors of said ship (we have under 1000 works on ao3 so it's hard to avoid them).

I was never a big fan of the authors in question anyway because of how they treat other fans but this makes me want to write a fic addressing all the bad shit they demand be ignored. I probably will never get around to it. But it's still fun to think about.

What are your other ATLA ships?

Zutara is my ATLA OTP, of course. As for other ships, I'm pretty flexible, depending on the story. I love Tokka, but Taang is also really cute and I can see it work. Sukka is wonderful, and Yuekka has a special kind of bittersweetness that I love. Jet also has a major crush on both Katara and Zuko in my mind, but idk if that counts as a ship (it'll definitely be fun to write in the Lee and Kya AU, tho).

I guess I just look for good characterization and storytelling. If the fic or idea is good, then I'll ship almost anything, unless I can't wrap my head around it because, let's face it, that happens.

On the rare ship spectrum, I've come to appreciate Jet/Suki, and decided to include it in one of my AUs. Aang/On Ji is one of my fav ships, too. They're so wholesome.

What ship were you completely obsessed with as a teenager, but now you don't care about anymore?

None. I may not be as passionate about them as I once was. But I still hold all my past ships near and dear to my heart. I'll even occasionally nip into their tags on A03 and have a dip into newer fics.

What ship would you consider your first one?

Daiken/Kensuke from Digimon 02. I remember watching it on Saturday morning and wondering if anyone else was seeing what I was seeing. That led me to discover Fanfiction.net. And the rest is history...

Your first fanfic was about which couple?

My very first full length fic was Corinthiel, posted here on Tumblr. My first fic posted on AO3 was Dreamling, and I wrote both last year. I am a very, very, very late comer to fanfic 😅. I'm honestly much more at home drawing fanart then writing. But will occasionally give into temptation, when an idea obbsessively hounds me to the point of insanity.

Do you remember the first couple you saw fan art of?

I genuinely can't. 😅 I remember it was probably on deviantart.

Have you ever gotten into ship discourse?

I try desperately to stay out of ship discourse. To me people's ships are their joy... And I've got no interest in being a theif of joy. If there's something I want to see more of in the fandom, like a rare pair I'm fond of, I just try and create content and hope someone else joins in (@bobbole loves you 💚🤍😅) . If it's not for me, I just keep scrolling on by.

Did you use to have any NOTP or have one currently?

Again, no. I've always been happy to pick and mix my ships. I have my favorites ofcourse. But I've never outright refused to dip my toe into any ship. Maybe if it ventured into an area I personally deemed problematic. But mostly, I'm happy to try anything once.

Who were the last couple in the last fanfic you read?

I'm currently reading Remy Lebeau x Logan fanfic from Xmen. 😅 What sent me in that direction, I do not know. But I've found some amazing new fics in and amongst revisiting some old favourites.

Currently, do you have any OTPs?

I can proudly say until recently I've never had an OTP. Being a multishipper makes that kind of hard. But I don't know, I may be in too deep with Corinthiel. I'm not sure I could picture Danny and the Second Corinthian with anyone else but each other now. (Curse you @ibrithir-was-here. See what you have wraught! 😆). Them and Charmes (Charon x Hermes) from Hades. Because why would you split up the professional associates like that?! (Again very much your fault @mashumaru 😆) , Damn, I guess I've got OTPs now. If there's an established, happy couple in canon, most of the time I'll respect that and leave them be. So I guess that kind of counts too.

Is there any couple that, to this day, that you are extremely mad about not getting into?

Again no. If the juggernaut ship of a fandom doesn't really tickle my fancy, I'll sometimes stare forlornly at it. And sigh like a sad bohemian poet. But that's all content envy and I know it. 😆

Is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they're kind of interesting?

🤔 I didn't dislike it, but I never really ventured near Corintheus until I started shipping Corinthiel. That made me backtrack and consider Morpheus and the original Corinthian's relationship from an entirely different perspective.

Do you have any ship that, in the past, would have been considered normal but now you would be cancelled over?

No I don't think so. As far as know they're all still alive, well and for the most part, living in peace and harmony in their respective fandoms.

What is your favorite crack ship?

Bookend, Destiny and his Book. The old book and chain. Living their best, grumpy old married couple, life together. @jazzy-a 🤜🤛🤣.

What is the couple you read the most fanfics about?

Most recently was Dreamling. I'm a bit of fandom butterfly at the moment, fluttering between multiple fandoms, waiting for the next all consuming passion to strike me down. I read, and reread ANYTHING Corinthiel 😅. But of all time?..... I couldn't say. I revisit so many of my ships so often.

What do most of your ships have in common?

Two bastards in love will always be my favourite. I'd love to boldly claim it's all about two morally dubious rogues, being despicable in the kinkiest ways together. 😅 But I know it's more about two people, often misunderstood and maligned... Finding a deep sense of belonging with each other. But I'm an eclectic sort and I've got a lot ships that don't fit that category I still love dearly.

What do you absolutely hate in a ship?

Absolutely nothing outright. I'll sometimes go off a ship a little once it reaches that point where fanon locks in too tight around it. But I think that's a very me problem, as I crave variation/new experiences/ideas. I'll still love the ship, I'll just know that's just my time to move onto something new and come back and visit every so often.

I was wondering if you have any OTP dialogue with one of them comforting the other one? Like, one of them finds something unpleasant and tries to forget it but they can't, so their partner decides to cheer them up with something! It would be a cute scene, I think. If you already have a post or more about this, I'm so sorry to bug you with this! 😅 Let me know about that ^^

I'm hoping to do some drawing from your prompts, but time and motivation are rather rare! :C So, a little sad thing happened and I found out that there is this one thing I enjoyed in a fandom. I found out that it's one of those hated ones... I'm surprised that it's the most disliked in most of the fandoms. In my opinion, it's cute... But I guess it's not everyone's cup of tea... :')

Person B has noticed for a while now but something has been troubling Person A as of late. They would never want to make them feel they have to tell when they aren’t ready but they want to do something, anything to help them with it. After all Person A should never have to shoulder any of their burdens alone. When an idea came to mind…

As Person A is sitting on the couch trying to process the newest of their troubles. It feels as if a new storm was overtaking them, when they begin to hear a faint music in the air. Drawing them out of their haze they lift their hands from their face and sit up to see Person B move away from the music player.

They stand in front of them with a slight bow and hold out their hand for their beloved to take, asking. “Would you do me the kind honour of joining me in a dance, my love?” Person A’s eyes switch from looking at Person B’s kind, hopeful smile and their outstretched hand and take it. As they begin a light sway to their dance Person B starts going more loose and having more fun with it, bringing a soft smile to Person A’s face and even a few laughs out of them. Only causing Person B to perk up even more.

As the dance slowly settles back into its original pace they bring Person A closer and gently tell them. “You know you can always rely on me whenever you feel troubled. Even if you aren’t ready to talk about it, I want you to know that I’ll always be here for you…” they pause and look into their eyes “So please, don’t feel like you have to carry your troubles alone.”

Person A stared back at Person B when their eyes begin to water, in a quick worried panic from Person B steps away to give them a bit of space and looks over them like a stressed mother hen. Person A lets out a light chuckle for them to see that their tears were not of sadness but happy ones. Person A puts their hand over one of Person B’s that rest on their upper arms and replies “Just knowing that I have you’re here with me, supporting me. No matter what storm comes, even if the feeling doesn’t immediately go away, means the world to me, just having you at my side.”

I know it’s no longer January, but I have a few more January OTP Prompts left that I want to try to get done!

I hope you had a wonderful January, love! I tried to include both prompts in this one, and I set it in the early days of the Bradshaws’ relationship, when they just started dating ☺️

There was rarely a time when The Hard Deck wasn’t packed with eager patrons, but today felt especially crazy. Since you and Penny had opened up the bar earlier that afternoon, you hadn’t had a single moment to yourself. Between running drinks to all the tables and hurrying food orders to and from the kitchen, your feet were aching by the time the sun finally set. And your shift wasn’t over for hours yet.

Leaning against the bar, waiting for Jimmy to finish pouring the drinks for one of the tables you were waiting on in the back, you leaned against the polished wood and let out a heavy sigh, wiping a tired hand down your face.

“How you doing, sweetie?” Penny’s motherly voice suddenly filled your ears, a comforting hand coming to rest on your back as she stepped up beside you.

“Oh, I’m alright,” you told her, trying to perk yourself up immediately. Penny was such a wonderful boss and friend, and you were happy to see her business thriving, so you didn’t want to let on how exhausted you were and have her worrying about you. Not when she had so many other things to concern herself with.

“You look dead on your feet, hon,” she laughed, her blue-green eyes sparkling with amusement. “Why don’t you take a break?”

“No, no, I’m okay. Really,” you insisted, shaking your head. “I have a few tables who are still waiting on their drinks, so I want to get those over to them.” At Penny’s pointed look, you smiled sheepishly and added, “After that, I’ll take a little break.”

Penny grinned in response, nodding in approval. “Where are Rooster and the others? I figured they’d be here tonight,” she said, brushing her dark hair out of her face.

“They had a special training today, so I’m not sure if they’re going to make it tonight. They’re probably even more dead on their feet than we are,” you laughed, smiling appreciatively when Jimmy set a cluster of beers down on your tray.

“Hmm, in that case, I’m sure Rooster’s going to be very mad at me that I’m making you work the late shift instead of sending you home to take care of him,” she teased with a wink.

Your cheeks grew warm at her words and you fidgeted with the tray in your hands. You and Bradley had only been dating for a couple months, but apparently it was evident to everyone how head over heels you were for him. “I should go drop off these drinks,” you stammered, not missing Penny’s knowing grin as you moved past her.

On your return to the bar, a customer suddenly grabbed your attention, waving her hand in the air. “Uh, you work here, right? Can you help us? I think the jukebox is broken,” she explained, indicating the vintage jukebox that was a central amenity in The Hard Deck.

“Oh, let me take a look,” you nodded, frowning in concern. You hoped nothing was wrong. You didn’t want to stress Penny out.

It looked, however, like you might have to. No matter how many times you tried to plug and unplug the jukebox, fiddling with quarters and pressing various buttons, nothing seemed to want to play. Your frown deepened as your concern grew, and you smacked your palms against the machine in frustration.

“Now what did that jukebox ever do to you, honey?” a deep voice hummed in your ear, the familiar tickle of your boyfriend’s mustache brushing against your skin as Bradley threw his arms around you from behind in a surprise hug.

“Bradley!” you gasped in shock, spinning around in his embrace so that you could throw your arms around him. But before you could try to defend your acts of violence against the jukebox, he was silencing you with a kiss, his fingers burying themselves in your hair as he held you close.

“What are you doing here?” you laughed when the two of you finally broke apart. “I thought you’d be home and in bed after that training today.”

Bradley shrugged nonchalantly, a grin splitting his face as he gazed down at you. “I couldn’t go home without seeing my best girl,” he murmured, brushing another kiss against your lips.

You still got butterflies whenever he called you that.

“So what seems to be the problem, honey?” he asked, resting his hands on your hips as he gazed behind you at the finicky jukebox.

“I don’t know. The jukebox is broken or something. No matter what I do, it doesn’t want to play,” you sighed. “But I hate to bother Penny about it. She has so many other things going on right now.”

“Sounds like you’re in need of some musical assistance, baby,” Bradley smirked, waggling his eyebrows mischievously.

You grinned in return, resting a hand on his chest. “I am, as a matter of fact. Know anyone?”

“I might know a guy,” he nodded, winking at you. “Just show me the way to the nearest piano,” he told you with a laugh.

Giggling, you took his hand and led him through the crowd to the piano where he’d first caught your eye months ago. “My hero.”

FanFriday #3: Why are these pairs so rare?

Ah! Happy (belated) third FanFriday, folks. How’s your week been? Mine’s been ordinary, but okay!

This week was tricky. Really tricky. The theme was meant to be “the best of the riders and their dragons”, with focus solely on Astrid, Fishlegs, and the twins with each of their dragons respectively.

The results felt… barbarically slim, actually.

This week’s post will include more than just fic recommendations under the cut.

This image seems accurate. Not only to canon itself, but also in the fandom. Toothless and Hiccup at the forefront and the others in the back.

At the time of this post (8/10/23) the numbers for the tags I tried exploring (otp: true, English) are as follows:

Astrid & Stormfly – 2 (1 ongoing)

Fishlegs & Meatlug – 0

Barf & Belch & Ruffnut & Tuffnut – 0

As a fic writer myself, I understand that most of the inspiration for things will tend to come from Hiccup and Toothless, as the MCs, and Hookfang and Snotlout because… well, it’s Hookfang and Snotlout. Doesn’t get much more inspirational than that.

But still, the fact that other dragon-rider duos have nothing (nothing that at least gives some focus to the tag which just seems to be bunched in with others) is quite astonishing. By statistics alone, they’re each considered to be a rarepair.

How peculiar.

And, so, I implore you all to take a step back and perhaps write that fic you wanted to write. Meatlug and Fishlegs? Twins and Barf & Belch? Doesn’t matter – the fandom’s side of the archive is in desperate need for it. All of it.

And with that, I’ll shut it and continue with this week’s scarce selection:

When Sleep Won’t Come by AHeartForStories — This fic is the only otp: true, Stormfly & Astrid result that was complete. The other, currently left incomplete, is in my marked for later. That being said, it’s very strange that this is the case. Though just because it appears to be the only result for this pair doesn’t make the scenario any less wonderful. Astrid has a nightmare and seeks comfort from Stormfly: simple, sweet. What a delightful read.

Please by AHeartForStories — This author seems to pump out so many fics, it seems, that they must be doing half the work for us, and I applaud them, because the ones that I have read, personally, are quite wrenching of emotion. This is a good example – this is one of two Heather and Windshear fics that had appeared in the search results I’d tried; one is incorrectly tagged (as otp: true, Heather & Windshear – it’s by far more Dagur & Heather based, the former duo hardly get much focus). In this fic, Heather stands during a heartbreaking performance as Ryker abuses Windshear to get to her. The end is relieving, and for a short, angsty one-shot with these guys I’d definitely point you in this fic’s direction!

Nothing Else Matters by sarahenany — This fic for some reason passed by my radar for the first FanFriday, but it’s a great fic (plus it helps pad out the list a bit to the three-fic minimum). It takes place during that disappointingly cut scene where Hookfang is struck with lightning in season six. It’s a “hidden scene”-type fic where we see Snotlout tend to Hookfang when he’s been downed. It’s a dazzling gem of a choice for these two, because they are so sweet as is. Definitely in my Top 10 so far.

My favorite primarch ship is Rogal Dorn/ Konrad Curze. It's... weird, but I just feel like it would work. Dorn's so stable and rational and could be there for Konrad when things are tough. Being affectionate would also be so beneficial for both of them. Also I feel like Konrad would clean up real nice and make some pretty-scary arm candy. I'm probably crazy. IDK. Do any rare pairs interest you at all?

I think that both their brand of neurodivergent would work nicely together. Not only that, but sexually, Konrad sadism would work wonder with Dorn masochism! But, since you asked me for my fav crackship... Here they GO:

Ciaphas Cain/Ibram Gaunt: Listen. I want them to fuck. I want them to do the nasty. And I want Cain to be "ohmygod he know he know HE KNOW IM A FRAUD" while Gaunt is like "What a charming, kind commissar :)". Also I want Jurgen and Rawne to hiss at each others like angry cats.

Mortarion/Vulkan: Wdym they don't interact in canon, they are in LOVE they are SOULMATE they are PERFECT FOR ONE ANOTHER. My warhammer OTP. I could write essay about those two. I adore them so much....

Konrad/Roboute: A wild one. I don't even know how to justify it. I just... I love them.... They deserve happiness, they deserve to be one another rock, they deserve to be not be shackled by the Imperium.

Ursula Creed/Morvenn Vahl: LESBIAN. L E S B I A N. I I had ursula for 5 minute and I fell in love, I immediately needed to ship her with the only other badass woman that was also single in that setting. Why yes, I do have deep fantasy about about a Ursula/Celestine/Morvenn/Greyfax foursome. It would be so hot.

Corvus/Sigismund: I one time requested this as a joke in an exchange, and got an amazing fic. Guys. It's not a joke anymore. I actually really enjoy the fucking ship. Help.

Sevatar/Lucius: I'm still yelling and screaming that Lucius never hung out in the fighting pit. I would have LOVED to see those two mean girls be murder besty.

I had every intention of making you a fall themed treat but when I saw you had an AU with Claire as an actress, I decided to make you an edit and write a little something to go with it! Ethan and Claire stood hand in hand on the red carpet, bathed in the soft glow of camera flashes and the chatter of the press. It was their second red carpet event as a couple, and this time, they were more prepared for the spotlight.

Claire wore an elegant, floor-length black gown that glimmered with every step. Ethan couldn't help but admire her grace and beauty. His eyes rarely left her with each step they took. The brilliant doctor beside her wore a dapper, well-tailored white tux.

A reporter greeted them warmly, "Good evening, Claire and Ethan! You both look fantastic. How has life been since your relationship became public?"

Claire smiled brightly, her eyes shining with happiness. "Life's been wonderful. We've been navigating the ups and downs of our different schedules and locations, but we have an amazing support system, and we cherish the moments we have together."

Ethan nodded in agreement, his hand steady and sure on her lower back. "Claire has been a source of inspiration and immeasurable joy in my life."

The reporter continued, "It's wonderful to see your relationship is going strong despite your differences. Any future plans for your relationship you're willing to share?"

Claire and Ethan shared a knowing smile, their gaze, lingering a moment together before Claire turned back to the reporter. "We're taking things one step at a time, and hoping to continue to keep our privacy as much as possible. But, I'll say we're looking forward to creating more memories together for a long time to come."

Ethan guided her a little closer as he pressed a kiss to her forehead. "Our focus right now is enjoying the present and building a strong foundation for an incredible future."

The reporter wished them well as they moved further down the red carpet. Their genuine love was on display for all that captured them on their cameras or in their words. Claire and Ethan had won the hearts of the people and their growing fans couldn't wait to see what the future held for their new OTP.
