While I'm being self-indulgent (is Self-Indulgent Sunday a thing?) wrt the Aranor (f!Aragorn/f!Faramir) fics/verse, some of my favorite details that have yet to appear in the fics:
—Andreth (f!Denethor) had a much more complicated path to the Stewardship than in canon and was the first woman to ever rule Gondor in her own right. In a case of extreme dramatic irony, Andreth's successful fight for the Stewardship helped pave the way for Aranor to become the first Ruling Queen.
—Andreth married relatively late in life for a first marriage. Although her marriage to the much-younger Gwindor of Dol Amroth was forwarded by both their families, they were passionately devoted to each other. But Gwindor longed for the sea of his home and wasted away in Minas Tirith, under the shadow of Mordor. (I particularly enjoy the reversal here, ngl.)
—Andreth refuses to leave Minas Tirith when she sensibly evacuates most of the other women and children, including her daughter and last surviving heir, Míriel (f!Faramir). Before Míriel's departure, Andreth places her in charge of the evacuees and instructs her to take up the Stewardship and lead their people to Gondor's refuges should Minas Tirith fall.
—The Northern Dúnedain have long prided themselves on the unbroken father-to-son line of the heirs of Isildur. But Arathorn dies leaving only a daughter, Aranor, far too young to forward her claim as heir of Isildur. The N. Dúnedain are inclined to pass the heirship to the nearest patrilineal male relation, ideally one already grown—until Elrond intercedes on toddler Aranor's behalf and takes on her care.
—When Aranor, a lean, greying, middle-aged woman, arrives in Gondor at the head of the army of the Dead and leads the defeat of the Corsairs, the southern Gondorians are grateful but also a bit "bzuh?" That was definitely not on their fantasy bingo cards.
—Even without an Aragorn/Arwen situation (Aranor's love is real but unrequited), Elrond comes to Gondor to see Aranor—as beloved as his natural daughters—become Queen Elessarnë. He ends up having a very kind talk with Míriel, who faces an uncertain future even as she still dreams of Númenor.
—Speaking of the unrequited Aranor/Arwen, Aranor is so used to loving Arwen in a very fairy-tale kind of way that she herself doesn't realize her feelings have shifted until well after the fact, and later, when she realizes she's in love with Míriel, it seems natural to assume this will also be unrequited. (Pining. This is a verse for pining.)

WARNING: Contains One Piece spoilers (or not, if you're up to date).
First time talking about One Piece on Tumblr. Second time re-watching. The first time I watched OP was from the persuasions of my then boyfriend (now husband). I absolutely fell in love with it on the get go but I stopped watching just after the Summit War Saga because like Luffy, I couldn't deal with Ace's death. So I took a long hiatus.
Many years later, it took some push and convincing to watch the Live Action on Netflix but eventually we both gave in. And the LA re-kindled the fire I didn't ever think I'd want re-lit.
So we have decided to do a full re-watch and now I am obsessed. We're currently re-watching Episode 282 (Enies Lobby arc) (and probably a few more episodes by the time I finish typing all of this), I purchased the first box set of the manga and am currently on Volume 6, and because I spiral, here I am, to my one source of endless ship material, Tumblr.
I didn't ship any couples the first time I watched OP but now I am obsessed with Luffy and Nami becoming OTP. My husband says I am over-analysing everything and that I should stop. To which I say, I can't! LOL
And I love the bromance between Zoro and Chopper haha - it's so kawaii!
Since I need an outlet to channel my thoughts and crazy theories and/or observations as I go through the anime AND the manga, I'll be here scribbling away.

On "upscaling" of covers ie why are we so boring now?
So, my recent desire to reread some Robin Hood retellings I used to love led me to Jennifer Roberson's Lady of the Forest. Roberson wrote a LOT of fantasy (Tiger and Del series is amazing) but she also wrote period novels now and then, and LotF is a historical take on the Robin Hood legend with focus on Marian.
I adored that novel back when I first read it many years ago and every time I've reread it since. My paperback copy is somewhere it's a pain to get to and is probably falling apart, so I went on amazon to get a kindle edition. It's there, I own it, yay but it also made me discover the new cover for it.
This is the original cover. This is the edition I first read as a young Mousie back in the 1990s:
Tumblr media
And this is the current cover:
Tumblr media
Notice the difference?
The first cover would definitely make me pause and check the book out a bit in a book store. It has a gorgeous old tale vibe that actually does convey a lot - it's heavy on romance (which it is), it has our protagonists (no wonder it's one of my favorite versions - I am a total sucker for blond with PTSD MLs.) The new cover is so depersonalized and generic I'd never pause twice.
This cover, like so many others, has gone respectable. No pretty people (no people at all), no romance no nothing. Some medieval weapon or two, a bland pattern and color. WHY?
The first cover you may like or not but it conveys a story! It catches attention. The second I wouldn't even pause in front of.
I know that romance novels have (sadly) moved from those gonzo covers with shirtless dudes clutching busty ladies but this is not even that. This is just boring.
Two corollaries.
One: I miss 1990s fascination with blond dudes holding their OTPs. Here is Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince (a delightful old school fantasy read I totally recommend.)
Tumblr media
Two: I can't say I get the romance novel cover switch either. This is the old cover for Justine Davis' Lord of the Storm:
Tumblr media
This is the new cover:
Tumblr media
It's not any less eye popping but it's kinda odd to leave off the heroine (though as someone who's read this novel more than once (it hits some VERY specific kinks; if you read it you know which ones. This is my judgment free zone :P) I am still not sure where she was clutching the dude's leg while wearing a nightie and 1980s hair.)
There are some amazing relatively recent covers that fight the bland and photoshop:
Tumblr media
I mean look at this beauty! I checked out this trilogy because of that cover! It's just as gloriously pulpy as the cover promises (side note if you like fucked up x fucked up battle couple, dude finding meaning of life and learning to trust because of one deadly woman, and hot blond guys with supernatural powers and hot dark haired ladies with a huge kill count, boy do I have a series for you.)
Anyway, I don't even know where this is going any more except you should read all the novels I mentioned.

Sweet Nicknames
The volleyball court was alive with energy as you and Hinata Shouyou, the fiery sunshine of the Karasuno team, practiced tirelessly. The sound of your spikes and the cheering of your teammates filled the air, but amidst the intensity, there was a connection that blossomed between you and Hinata—one that went beyond the sport itself.
One sunny afternoon, as the two of you took a break from your rigorous training, Hinata approached you with a mischievous glint in his eyes. With a shy smile tugging at his lips, he mustered the courage to call you by a new name, a nickname that held a hint of endearment.
"Hey, (Y/N)," Hinata said, his voice filled with a newfound sweetness, "can I call you 'Sunshine'? Because you bring light to my day, just like the sun."
A blush crept across your cheeks, your heart fluttering at his words. The affectionate nickname seemed to capture the essence of your connection, a reminder of the warmth and joy that radiated between you.
Hinata's choice of nickname reflected his vibrant personality, and it filled you with a sense of adoration. The nickname became a symbol of the bond you shared, one that surpassed the boundaries of the volleyball court.
As the days went by, Hinata continued to use the nickname, his voice filled with affection and fondness whenever he called you "Sunshine." Each time he said it, it felt like a gentle caress, a reminder of the light you brought into his life.
In moments of triumph, when the team celebrated a hard-fought victory, Hinata's voice would rise above the cheers, calling out your nickname with joy and pride. The sound of it reverberated through your being, kindling a warmth that spread from the tips of your toes to the depths of your heart.
But it was in moments of vulnerability that the true power of the nickname shone through. During challenging matches or difficult times, Hinata's voice would soften as he whispered, "Don't worry, Sunshine, I believe in you."
His words became a soothing balm, erasing doubts and fears. In those moments, the nickname held a deeper meaning—it represented Hinata's unwavering belief in your abilities, his faith in your strength, and his unwavering support.
The nickname "Sunshine" became a reminder that you were cherished and valued, not just as a teammate but as a person. It served as a beacon of encouragement, lifting your spirits and fueling your determination.
And as you stood side by side with Hinata, facing challenges both on and off the court, you realized that the nickname had become an integral part of your relationship. It symbolized the trust, affection, and unwavering support that you shared—a connection that transcended the boundaries of volleyball and resonated deep within your souls.
For in the embrace of Hinata's affectionate nickname, you found a sanctuary—a place where you were reminded of the light you brought to his life, and where your bond continued to grow, nurtured by the warmth of his unwavering love and the unspoken promises it held.
a/n: considering it's one in the morning, i don't really know where i'm getting any of these ideas from. you can thank the otp prompts and my liking of extroverted characters.

tauria!! 9, 14, 21, 74, 80, 84, 104, 122 from the book rec ask game please <33
ahhh thank you maya!
9. your favourite book of 2020
ahh, i'm actually going to answer this for---last year, because i remember it and also bc i hit my reading goal last year!!
so my actual answer would be nona the ninth, but as i have already rec'd gideon to bean and mentioned harrow in this list, i shan't count it.
s o.
i think i'm gonna go with The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkoski, which is part one of a duology. the first is a retelling of cinderella, the second of sleeping beauty.
the first, to me, was much more enjoyable than the second, although i deeply enjoyed both. the first is singular pov, the second is split (i liked the LI's more!)
the book takes place on an island which is segregated into three classes / rings, each of which enjoys a vastly different quality of life than the other. the protagonist lives in the lowest class, where, if you're charged with a crime, no matter the severity, the guards can take any tribute they ask---from a few strands of hair to some blood to an eye, etc. she works with her guardian to help sneak people out of the lower ring and into the upper rings, and has always yearned for a taste of them hersellf. after spending a night in prison, she meets an outsider--the first on the island in many years--who helps her achieve just that.
also the plot twist in this book is. amazing.
14. a book that made you trip on literary acid
like. in the most positive way possible.
Harrow the Ninth.
look. i wasn't going to rec sequels. i wasn't.
but oh my god.
i walked away from this book with a headache and i said thank you ms. muir <3
(runner up answer would be the stars are legion, bc. oof. that book was a mind-fuck. again? best way possible. but also. damn.)
21. a book with a red cover
literally the first book that came to mind was Eldest, of the Inheritance Cycle.
(i was going to answer with "witches of ash & ruin by e. latimer" but my kindle cover is now blue -.- and uglier, imo. whatever.)
but, uh. The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett!! i started the discworld series with the tiffany aching series, and i highly recommend <3 the nac mac feegles make me giggle so much <3
also i deeply love tiffany and all of the things that pterry conveys through her <3
74. your favourite love triangle
i didn’t forget to answer this before i clicked post wdym
this is hard!!! ngl i actively avoid love triangles in books after being so inundated with them during some of my peak reading years lmao
ahhh but
i actually didn’t mind how the love triangle was handled in the early throne of glass books!
i don’t necessarily recommend those but i was. obsessed with them for a time xD
80. a book that reminds you of a loved one
i technically answered this on bean's! that would be "a girl of the limberlost" or "the secret garden" bc they both remind me of my mom.
also almost any murder mystery will remind me of her, as those were her favorite genre.
u h m. but to name a different book; i think of my brother every time i see a riordanverse book, particularly the Percy Jackson <3 i let him borrow my copies (i've. mostly forgiven him for their now beat up / falling apart state) and watching him develop his first otp / devour them was so sweet <3
104. a fluffy, sweet read
so i didn't technically rec it on bean's list, i just mentioned it.
Legends And Lattes - Travis Baldree! cozy, slice of life fantasy with a sapphic romance. an orc retires from adventuring to open a coffee shop in a city that's never heard of coffee. (its a gnomish thing.) has a lot of dnd-like setting things and so much found family <3
also it made me hungry, so like. have ur favorite warm drink & pastries on hand when you read it bc you may also end up wanting them <3
122. your favourite winter read
hmmm.
okay so first! um. when i think winter / autumn / summer / spring read i don't necessarily think about season in the book itself, but rather like... how i feel during those seasons. so! autumnal reads i prefer spookier vibes; summer i want lighter books i don't have to focus too much on bc the heat has melted my brain; and for winter i want books that are good for spending a long time under blankets, so. chunkier the better. (i don't know what a spring read is to me.)
i am going to answer this one with two books!
the first i have not actually read -- The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, which is a fucking beast of a book. i am... about 20%? through it? i think? but i had to put it down bc i couldn't give it the full attention it deserved. however, i think, due to its size, it would be a lovely book to devour over a handful of snowy days, curled up in blankets <33
the second i have read, and i actually wouldn't call this one chunky, but. i dunno. it's made for a nice evening read, i think. anyway! The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia A McKilip.

hey mikey! for the otp question meme, could you do starjack?
MY BELOVEDS!!! This got kind of out of hand and is over 2k words, so I'm putting it under a cut.
#29 has spoilers for the Unicron comics!!
1. Who is the most affectionate?
In public? Wheeljack. Starscream is NOT a fan of PDA. It’s not professional, it’s a show of weakness, he’s too good for that, etc etc etc etc. In private, it’s a tie between the two of them! Depends on what moods they’re in. Since Wheeljack’s very autistic and Starscream’s very traumatized, they both have times when they don’t want to be touched, so physical affection varies. With other kinds of affection, it’s more constant and still balanced pretty evenly between them.
2. Big spoon/Little spoon?
Oooo this is a good one bc it’s almost always Wheeljack. Not only is he the shorter one, but Starscream’s wings make trying to be the little spoon into a bit of an ordeal. Wheeljack’s get in the way, but they’re much smaller and easier to deal with. Sometimes, Starscream will be the little spoon for a while, but more often, either he’s the big spoon or they cuddle front-to-front.
3. Most common argument?
Oh man. Starscream is a special creature, so they have special arguments. Their most common one is variations on “Starscream, you need to stop acting in your own self-interest to the detriment of literally everyone else around you.” Runner up is “Starscream, you need to stop treating everyone like they’re out to get you.”
4. Favorite non-sexual activity?
Reading together! They both have very demanding jobs, so it’s nice to just sit together and read or watch a show for a while after work. It usually slowly turns into cuddly reading, and then just cuddles.
5. Who is most likely to carry the other?
Hmmmm Wheeljack, probably. Starscream is eminently carriable. He has that energy about him.
6. What is their favorite feature of their partner’s?
Wheeljack’s favorite feature of Starscream’s is face, and specifically the shape of his cheeks and his eyes. Starscream switches frames a lot, but Wheeljack recognized him immediately when he woke up in RID. Starscream’s face is constant, and constantly pretty. Starscream’s favorite features of Wheeljack’s are his audial fins! He thinks they’re very cute (he’s right). He especially loves how they flash when Wheeljack gets really into what he’s talking about.
7. What’s the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for the other?
For Wheeljack, the first thing that changes is the kind of time he spends with Starscream. He starts hanging out with him in non-professional and non-coincidental contexts, and then spending more one-on-one time with him. They slowly start spending a lot of time in each other’s quarters. For Starscream, what changes is the amount of time spent with Wheeljack. When he realizes his own feelings, he starts spending WAY less time with Wheeljack. Basically takes a huge step back with no warning. This is not conducive to kindling a relationship, Starscream. You can’t just do things because you’re scared, Starscream.
8. Nicknames? & if so, how did they originate?
Super super basic. Jackie and Star, just derivatives of their names. They’ll both also call each other “sweetheart” because they’re big saps.
9. Who worries the most?
In general, Starscream. He is a ball of anxiety with wings. About the other, Wheeljack. I lied. The ball of anxiety also has significant problems to go with the wings, and Wheeljack has good reason to worry about him.
10. Who remembers what the other one always orders at a restaurant?
Wheeljack. Starscream may be in love, but he is always a bit of a self-centered bastard.
11. [Removed to keep it sfw]
12. Who initiates kisses?
They both kind of initiated their first kiss simultaneously. It was a mutual thing and, keeping in that vein, they’re pretty mutual about all of their kisses. Wheeljack initiates more, but not by much. It mostly comes down to Starscream and his dislike of PDA.
13. Who reaches for the other’s hand first?
The first time? Wheeljack. Now, most of the time, still Wheeljack. Starscream is stubborn about everything, including reaching out for any kind of support or comfort. Wheeljack’s not a fan of holding hands for too long, though, because even if robots don’t sweat, the texture and feel of palms right up against each other is weird for him.
14. Who kisses the hardest?
Starscream DEFINITELY. He has drawn blood more than once (it’s okay; Wheeljack loves him and his enthusiasm and his fangs). He loves kissing, which is part of the reason he doesn’t initiate much in public. He doesn’t just want a peck on the lips. He wants a makeout session. He also uses Wheeljack’s audial fins as handles quite often.
15. Who wakes up first?
On a work day, Starscream. Wheeljack, being a fairly well-known, well-off, well-connected engineer, gets to largely decide his own schedule, and he’s a night owl, so most days he gets to his lab around 10am and stays late. Starscream’s schedule is much less flexible and he usually has prep work for meetings, so he gets up around 6:30 most days. Sometimes, Wheeljack gets up with him, because Wheeljack takes forever to wake up and he likes to be lazy in the mornings and get a few extra Starscream cuddles before Starscream has to be out the door.
16. Who wants to stay in bed just a little longer?
Jackieeeee. He wants to sleep in he wants to cuddle he wants to be a nuisance and make it much harder for Starscream to start his day. It’s very hard to get up the willpower to start a day full of meetings and paperwork when you have a very warm very lovey Wheeljack in your bed tempting you with kisses and cuddles. Starscream shows incredible strength every day he makes it to work on time.
17. Who says I love you first?
Wheeljack, and Starscream FLIPS. They were fuckbuddies for a while before starting their relationship, and because of Circumstances and Wheeljack being a sad dramatic gay bitch, he drops the L-word on Starscream as a way of introducing the idea of a more serious relationship. Starscream is VERY skittish when it comes to serious relationships, so he doesn’t react well. He also doesn’t say “I love you” back for almost a month. Not because of any lack of feeling, just because that’s terrifying and there’s nothing Starscream hates more than vulnerability.
18. Who leaves little notes in the other’s one lunch? (Bonus: what does it usually say?)
Neither, but Starscream usually pings Wheeljack around lunchtime just to check in.
19. Who tells their family/friends about their relationship first?
OUGH so they keep everything very low-key, verging on secret, for a while. Starscream is, well, Starscream, and most of the people Wheeljack knows aren’t going to be happy with their relationship. Wheeljack waits about three months before telling most of his friends, and Starscream doesn’t really have any friends. BUT. But. Wheeljack was pining and angsting to Ratchet months before they got together, and Ratchet had advice for Wheeljack as far as the Bot/Con cultural divide goes. Ratchet knew right away just because Wheeljack couldn’t keep the stupid grin off his face the first time they talked after they got together.
Starscream’s tough bc this sounds horrible but he doesn’t really have anyone to tell? I guess technically Bumblebee knew first because of the whole ghost situation but that doesn’t really count bc he was dead at the time. The first person Starscream tells in a one-on-one conversation is Skyfire, but that’s MONTHS after they get together. Mostly, their relationship just kind of became obvious to the people around them. So it’s complicated.
20. What do their family/friends think of their relationship?
Oh man. It’s Bad. It’s Pretty Bad. Windblade and Ratchet are really the only ones who think Wheeljack hasn’t lost his mind. For a long time, basically everyone thinks Wheeljack is either making a horrible mistake or being manipulated. Starscream is not a good person, and his shittiness is very public knowledge. The DETAILS of his shittiness are very available to the military social group Wheeljack’s a part of. It takes a long time for the tension to fade and for people to realize that Wheeljack and Starscream are actually pretty good for each other.
21. Who is more likely to start dancing with the other?
Starscream!!! Wheeljack Cannot Dance he is very clumsy he’s terrible at it but that does not stop Starscream from spinning him around the living room and dipping him and laughing when Wheeljack steps on his toes. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s very romantic and silly and sweet.
22. Who cooks more/who is better at cooking?
Cybertronians don’t really do cooking? But if they did, Starscream would be the better cook.
23. Who comes up with cheesy pick up lines?
Wheeljack. He is a dork at his core. He comes up with the WORST lines and tries them at the most random times. Starscream has snorted energon out his nose several times before thanks to well-timed pickup lines. HOWEVER. Every once in a great while Starscream will come out with the worst pickup line you’ve ever heard. He is getting them from Thundercracker.
24. Who whispers inappropriate things in the other’s ear during inappropriate times?
Starscreammmmmm. Fucking bastard.
25. Who needs more assurance?
Starscream definitely. I’ve talked a bit before about how I think he has the robot equivalent of Borderline Personality Disorder, and needing assurance is definitely a part of that. Despite the show of narcissism, his actual self esteem is in the gutter and his relationship track record is abysmal at best, so he needs assurance pretty regularly that he’s still wanted and that their relationship is okay. It’s hard for him to read the cues that would otherwise tell him how the relationship is going, because Megatron pretty thoroughly scrambled the “healthy relationships” part of his brain.
26. What would be their theme song?
Here’s their playlist, and on that playlist, The Song is definitely Pierre by Ryn Weaver. It’s about the “I can’t let him in / you call me up and ask me how I’ve been / I’ll call your bluff and / keep on tellin’ you lies” it’s about the “you play me rough but I won’t let you in” and MOST IMPORTANTLY it’s about the “I’ll come around.”
27. Who would sing to their child back to sleep?
Wheeljack? But tbh neither of them are cut out to be parents. I love them both but that would be terrible.
28. What do they do when they’re away from each other?
First and foremost: be annoying to the people around them. God you have never met two people who can complain more about how much they miss their partner. Wheeljack won’t even properly complain, he’ll just mope and sigh and talk about Starscream 24/7, which is arguably worse. Starscream, predictably, will swing between pretending that nothing is wrong and that he has no feelings and acting like he’s dying.
Fortunately, with Cybertronian tech, it’s easy to keep in touch even over long distances, so they call and text a lot.
29. one headcanon about this OTP that breaks your heart
[UNICRON SPOILERS!!!!]
The fact that Wheeljack died makes it easier for Starscream to sacrifice himself.
He finds out a few hours after it happened. He’s well-informed, one of the first to know about everything happening with Unicron, both out of his own demand and out of necessity, but even the people involved in the mission took a little while to figure out Wheeljack didn’t make it. Starscream isn’t told gently. He’s told as part of a brief. He does his best to keep a straight face.
When the time comes to activate the Talisman, he thinks of who he has left. He thinks of his trine, broken. He thinks of Skyfire, who hates him. He thinks of Windblade, who he’s taught decently and left with a good support system. He thinks of Wheeljack, who he loves, who loves him back, who sacrificed himself to save a planet of organics. He doesn’t know if he believes in an afterlife, but he knows if there is one, he and Wheeljack won’t be going to the same place. He thinks about a life without Wheeljack, without anyone.
He activates the Talisman.
30. one headcanon about this OTP that mends it
Oh thank god I broke my own heart with that last one. Wheeljack loves infodumping to Starscream! Starscream is the worst listener ever to 99% of people in the universe. Wheeljack is the single exception. Starscream will listen to Wheeljack talk about whatever he’s currently interested in for HOURS. He loves how happy and relaxed Wheeljack gets. He loves his happy stims and the way his audial fins flash. He loves learning from Wheeljack, even if sometimes he gets too lost in the gay thoughts to follow some of the concepts.
This is a sort of related headcanon, so I’ll throw it in as a bonus. Wheeljack snaps his fingers a lot as a happy stim, especially when he’s talking about/working with a special interest, and by the time they’ve been together six months, Starscream has picked up the snapping thing, too. It’s very cute they are SO in love.

'Whither you go may you find light. Await us there, my brother - and me.'
- from Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth, J.R.R. Tolkien
Months and months ago, tried a short ghost story about souls meeting again in a time out of time. Featuring the saddest OTP. The AU is on me (apologies).
Tumblr media
The nightwinds are kind. They lift her above foreign lands, over sleepy forests and serpentine rivers, above hopes and dreams and old woes. The stars gleam, too bright, ancient watchers dripping light in the maw of the world, and higher still, she rises; wandering gusts lap softly at her bareness. Frostbitten and faraway the kindled ones once seemed, now so close she brushes past them, past remnants of divine luster and the touch of hallowed fingers that sewed them to barren skies.
A part of her wonders if this is a dream, but no fancy of the mind ever brought such freedom, nor such peace; like a floundering bird on swift, restless wings, she crosses paths unknown with no end in sight. There is no weariness or hunger, only depths of loneliness as the past weakens its grasp, peeling away in chipped layers that fastly shrivel like paper to flame. She could clutch at them, tuck them close and so she tries, only to find all desires void of meaning, all wishes laid to rest.
Should I be afraid?
Like a falling star, the thought dies, for the very concept of fear is unraveling and falling from her like leaves with the seasons.
Other memories emerge, flowering, wilting in rapid succession: some cherished, some best forgotten. A pull stronger than her will leads her forward, and unhoused she drifts as drowning in the thrashing waves of a cosmic river. Her frail, wayward light is cupped by great, gentle hands, like a grain of sand carried across the outer oceans.
Alone.
She stands beneath the looming arches of vast, endless chambers.
Heavy, leaden silence presses its solemn fists into stark grandeur. Fine silver dust shimmers on smooth black floors, disturbed by her wavering steps. The tall columns of jet soar into hidden heights, draped with grey vapors that float like gossamer, fluttering with no wind to stir them. Andreth sees etchings that sway and curl across their limpid surface, ever moving, ever changing. She looks closer, but for all her past knowledge, cannot place meaning to the script.
What is this place?
Stillness; no answer but the faint echo of her own voice, roiling like flickering motes inside her head. She walks on, stalked by a sudden, pressing weight of bereavement, and despair is on her heels.
Who... am I?
She knew this; she knew. She has to remember, can never forget, fighting the torpor that pools around her like a dark rippling lake, urging rest and forgetfulness.
I was a child of the earth.
I lived, I learned.
I loved.
She looks at her hands; grey and translucent. She ought to feel awe or terror, but now there is nothing.
I lost.
“Where am I?” her words arrow blindly, swallowed by quietude, trapped in the strangest of dreams. “Someone…?” Andreth sinks to her knees, curling like a shell, her forehead pressed to icy floors. “Anyone... please…”
“Saelind?”
It comes as a faraway keening, but she hears it. The word sears, stoking the flame of remembrance. Slowly she rises and stares at the figure a distance away, tall and golden amid shadows.
Saelind.
Aye, I was known by that name once. She must remember.
Andreth gains her feet and draws near, eyes widening as his features become clearer, sharper, familiar.
“You…”
The dead of winter. Snow is in her hair, melting on her burning cheek, her lashes. A firm grip rights her balance; an apology served with smiles like curved blades.
Bleeding sunsets fringe the memory detailing a cold evening, a freezing night. Her blood is hot and the stars are cold, and her face sways in the mirrorblack. Her veins sing beneath her youthful skin, craving coarse, sword-wielding fingers.
“Aegnor!” she cries, unable to believe it. She dares not speak, fearing he will disappear, that he will leave again, but he merely stands before her like a stab of regret. “How… but you left!” Andreth stumbles in her flight to reach him. “North away, long ago, to the swords, and the siege…”
He gives no answer; lowers his head.
His deep voice she remembers, soothing and warm like the hearth she curled up to on bitter nights, dwelling on what might have been. Andreth would throw her arms around him, weep and weep until the mountains crumbled, until the seas dried and the world was turned. She takes another step and another. She cares not how or why, but he is here now, with her.
Her hand reaches for his face, finding empty air. Frowning, she tries again and his eyes, once as kind as they were eager, are dark with grief, his lips a seal of misery as he says, “We cannot mingle here.”
“What is your meaning?” Andreth asks, frantic, yet trying to reach for him in vain, her hands delving through him. “Where is here?”
The Elf raises an arm, gesturing to a long corridor leading to a chilling, unworldly light. It dazes her, thrumming around them like a heartbeat, beckoning, calling. She knows.
“The Halls of Awaiting,” Andreth murmurs. “But that means I am…” she looks to her hands again, struck by the diaphanous glow of her bodiless form. “You are…” Gone. Ousted from the physical realm, come to the final circle.
She does not want to leave; does not want this gift.
Aegnor glances at a tapestry streaked with crimson, depicting lands drowning in dragon fire. “The war has ended for me.”
“You fell...” she sighs, looking up at him. Once, she would rest her forehead on the cold plate armor of his chest; his hands would twine in her hair. “So… so soon...” the truth bites with savage teeth. For all the time allotted to him on Arda, he’d gone before her. “Are you… are you alone here?”
The wraith shakes his head. “There are others.”
She does not see them. There is no one else but they, and now, at last, she is afraid. Andreth stares at his form, swaying like the lorn branches of trees caught in the storm. He is made of crumbling visions, golden and distorted, and fading. “But...” she tries, “...how?”
The spirit watches her, features breaking in dismay, and meanings flit across his face. Pain, longing, regret; acceptance. “I was allowed to see you, before...” his brows furrow, and he looks away, as though gathering courage long overdue; too late.
Andreth shivers. She remembers. Now, in this plane of thought where they are no more than whispers and sighs and broken light, she finally understands his choice without bitterness.
“Saelind, please, listen. I will—”
He struggles to speak, his hollow eyes plead meaning, but fragments of thought flutter between them like grey moths and she no longer understands him. The fleeting words rush through her like fireflies, and he flickers like a spent candle. The halls are deathly cold, but terrible and bright, blinding her vision of him. Desperate, Andreth shuns the rising command from beyond, tucking away every trait, every detail, all the memories. She faces the imperious light, “Let me linger a moment longer, no more!”
The Elf is mere gleaming outlines, his features bled away like inked parchment in the rain. Hardly Andreth fights the finger-like threads coiling as burning whips around her, and she herself is dwindling, fracturing to splintered colors. Her hands reach for him, craving his words, needing to know. Luminous waves spin like a maelstrom as the call swells unbearably loud, and her cries are lost.
Silence falls, heavy-handed. The halls are dimmed. The lone fëa lingers amid the tapestries of fate, wordless and formless, fading to a dull, mournful grey as the soft dust of Mandos falls upon him.

Congrats! and:
🤗
billsfangearring asked:
Congratulations!!! I’d love to hear your answer to 🤗
Ask post with emoji list
(Sorry, I'm inept at Tumblr protocols, so I'm c & p-ing two of the same asks together.)
This is a tricky one - 🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?
My real workday starts in about half an hour, so I may have to chip away at this for a while. The reason it's tricky is that fandom has changed so much since I clicked a link and found myself flailing around in LiveJournal wonderland. I embraced my OTP in that same flailing instant (Snarry, of course), and it brought me a community already at full steam. Snarry was considered a weird, batshit, indefensible pairing even then, but in its own LJ corner it was extremely beloved, and other HP shippers mostly left us alone. I'm tempted to rhapsodize about the people I encountered, but the point is, they were creative, ribald, mostly 30+ in age, delighted by Snape's moral turpitude and angst and arseholery as much as by his courage and intelligence and mystery (remember, this was pre-Lily and all the disappointment that came with it).
In short, I was welcomed and supported as I grew from a commenter and frothing enthusiast into a fic writer. (I know Discord fills some of that need currently, but chat style doesn't work for me.) And it was a free-for-all. The conversations were lengthy and earnest but also irreverent, and because they were threaded and static - no scrolling back to find a starting point or a branching tangent - they occurred over days among all kinds of fans who linked each other's opinions. If you didn't want outsiders reading your stuff, you could friends-lock it, sure. But otherwise, a fair percentage of Snape and Snarry fans felt free to drop in, share their interpretations, start a convo about your fic, and ask for help. There were also reccing communities and newsletters, and these fandom seems
Those things were as crucial to me as the actual writing. I'd been writing original fic on my own for years, but Snarry fandom's community participation was the fuel I needed to motivate me into turning my fannish infatuation into stories.
So... find a mutually supportive community. Share what you have to say. Re-kindle your excitement in any way you can. It can make fandom so much more fun and help you finish what you start.
As for writing: I'm absolutely, utterly character-driven, so that shapes how and what I write. You may prefer plot or world-building. Or favorite tropes. Or porn. But for me, character is why I write, and it all flows from there. Whatever gets you daydreaming, making up scenes in your head, whatever gives you a rush of emotion when you read other fics or revisit the canon, whatever holes in the worldbuilding are bugging you enough to write fix-its, let that inspire you.
And then - find the words. I'm a stickler for grammar and spelling, so I'm going to say, learn the rules. For one thing, it will help you say what you want to say. It will seduce readers to your point of view. And then? Just start. Think about a useful or exciting entry point, but if that makes you freeze up, just write the most urgent or colorful or heartbreaking or reverse-engineered idea you've had recently, something that has power over you. Even if all you have to say at first is You're my fave and you deserve nice things, find a way to show that. Show your fave getting everything they ever wanted. (And then have them lose it all because you also love angst, and the potential for writing comfort (or not) is just around the corner.) You want to tell the story that canon didn't.
Don't worry about writing a perfect fic. This is fanfiction. You can do anything. It doesn't have to be brilliant. It doesn't have to be canon-compliant. It can be the craziest shit you ever dreamed up. It can be embarrassing. Who cares? Welcome to the internet. It can fall short of what you see in your head. (Get used to that. Writers beat themselves up a lot, but it's just how human brains work.) And it means you've got another chance to write an entirely different story and cram all the things you love and didn't quite manage to capture into a whole new piece of writing. It can surprise you (who wrote that? fuck, I didn't know that about myself.) It can even be unfinished. Fanfiction doesn't have to adhere to traditional storytelling. You want an audience, well, sure, but you also want to express the thing that makes this world, these characters, mean so much to you.
You'll be disappointed sometimes, you'll get criticism sometimes, you might have to learn how to avoid professional haters. But you also, above all, get to love your work. Don't ever let anyone tell you that it's not good enough. It might need improvement - whose work doesn't? (Okay, I can think of a few, but they're exceptions.) But that story is still something to be proud of. You are allowed to love your own writing. To be happy about it. To make yourself fall even more in love with your favorite character because now you've written them. Now they belong a little bit to you.
And loving your own stories will help you keep writing. And as you keep writing, you'll eventually figure out what it is you really want to say. You'll get closer and closer to the heart of things, and better at making other people love it, too.
Okay, this is a great big bunch of blather written under pressure at work, so it's more cheerleading than nuts and bolts. I don't talk much about my own process here because I wouldn't recommend the way I write to an aspiring author, and it would only be interesting to a tiny handful of readers. But I hope at least some of this addresses the question!

Was there a time where you were bad at writing, or have you always had a natural talent?
I'm 26, I used to write but haven't for a long time, and it's safe to say I'm not the best. I can piece together small scenes that I enjoy, but my ability to write a decent plot and a full story is pretty much non existent.
If there was ever a time in your life where you weren't good at writing, how did you still still force yourself to finish the damn thing in order to get better?
This might be an unusual opinion, secret person, but I honestly don't believe there's such a thing as bad writing. And I don’t know if there’s really any need to concern yourself with ‘getting better’ at your craft.
Over the course of my life, I’ve abandoned probably dozens of bestselling books by award-winning authors, usually at around chapter three. Sometimes I’m just not feeling any kind of connection to the characters. Sometimes the plot seems too evasive and too consciously clever, or the prose (which the front cover calls “lavish” and “sumptuous”) just feels puffed up and confusing to me. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to evade the question, “Did you read that book I told you about? Isn’t it good?” The words “it’s so well-written” are starting to feel like a red flag to me.
On the flipside, there are books which I absolutely love but get shredded to pieces on Goodreads. Half of my favourite fanfiction pieces have a tenth of the kudos I think they should. Sometimes I’ll pick something up in a Kindle sale because I’m bored and it’s only a quid, then devour the whole thing in one night. I’m left broken and haunted when it’s over. I feel physical, gut-wrenching guilt that I paid a mere pound for what seems to me a masterpiece - then I check it out on Goodreads, and sure enough, there are the one-star reviews. “A yawn fest, poorly written, DNF at chapter three.”
I guess what I’m saying is this: there’s no such thing as objective quality.
And more importantly, this: whatever kind of writing is attempting to enter the world through you, someone out there is desperate to read it. It’s not necessarily your job to make it better. It’s your job to let it through.
I get the feeling you’re punishing yourself a bit right now, saying you can only piece small scenes together. But listen: I love stories where small scenes are pieced together. Genuinely, my one true love on AO3 is fics that are tagged “just vibes” or “vignettes” or “no hurt only comfort”. I tend to write very plotty, angsty stories which go on forever, but when I’m reading, I want someone to show me my OTP in a bubblebath for a few hundred words. Sometimes I get asks from other writers wanting to know how it is I write angst and high drama - they’ve tried it themselves but lost interest, and they worry that it indicates some lack of skill on their part. But it doesn’t at all. The key part is this: lost interest. It’s not that you’re bad at this part of writing, or that part of writing, or by extension bad at writing itself. You’re just a different kind of writer. Your heart is interested in different things. It’s like seeing a beautiful bird berate itself because it can’t really swim.
Sometimes I see writers mad at themselves because they used to write one way and now they write another. I’ve seen my friends lament “crappy little poems” which deserve to be in a magazine, just because they’re not writing the sort of dense political novel they studied at university. It breaks my heart. Life’s short, secret person, and you are so unique. Express what you’ve got, warts and all, however it comes. Somebody out there will adore it.
(And on the subject, half the things people hold up as examples of “poor writing”, or those Tumblr lists of “ways to improve your craft”... give me a break. I never intended to become some kind of paladin for adverbs, but here we are. Adverbs are discussed by some writing guides as if it’s better just to shoot yourself in the face than use one. When the hell did this get decided? It drives me up the wall. Go pick up any book by the best-selling novelist of all time, open literally any page and you’ll find an imperial fuckton of adverbs. “Hmm, yes, well, Agatha Christie’s prose was often subpar,” modern critics drone. Yeah? Then why is the whole world still in love with her work? Because Agatha Christie didn’t worry about ‘improving her craft’. She understood that she was her craft. She just sat at the typewriter and let it come through - and if ‘he stated loudly’ was what came through, then that’s what she put down.)
To answer your final question, secret person - how to force oneself to finish something - I’m going to float the suggestion that you step back entirely, put your hands up, and have an honest and compassionate conversation with yourself. Why are you struggling with this project? Is it because you don’t actually like this kind of story, and you’re desperate to write something that you do like? Or do you love this project so much that you’ve become a little nervous in these later stages, wanting to do it justice? (The answer to that is, don’t worry about making it good. Just let yourself make it how you want it. If you’re enjoying the story, someone else will, too.) If you can’t quite tell at the moment, that’s fine. Put the whole thing aside for a month and let the answer come to you. And remember, you’re not obliged to finish every project that you start. Sometimes you’ll finish things (i.e., they have brought you sufficient creative satisfaction) before the final chapter rolls around.
To summarise, don’t let yourself get tangled up in talk of good writing, or bad writing. Just give the world your writing. One reader’s DNF-at-chapter-three is another reader’s absolute all-time favourite. There’s literally no way to please all of us, so focus on pleasing yourself.

nine people you want to know better, pt. 2!
ty for the tag, @hyuccubus! i'm lost on where i was in my mutuals list for tagging so this is an open tag for anyone who wants to hop on, please tag me so i can read your replies <3
three ships: my last answer to this was just britta x jeff from community! i'm struggling to come up with more but i do really love the relationships in twin peaks
first ship: okay i'm just gonna expand on my early gossip girl reading/viewing in light of the tags i just noticed @ls-daydreams left on my first post!! (also bc i'm currently watching the 4th season of You so i have thoughts on dan 👀) so in the book i really loved dan x vanessa, when i watched the show i had a Lot of Feelings bc i'd already read all the books when the show was announced. they crammed the whole first book into the first ep!! so i didn't watch it during its initial run when i was in hs, but i did go back and watch a lot of it in my early 20s. i really liked georgina, but dan always had my heart and somehow dan x blair was really fucking fun?? i was also a nate x serena otp truther. i have not watched the new series but now i'm kinda thinking about a rewatch of the original
last song i listened to: redbone by childish gambino (i was trying to figure out which song was over the opening scenes of Get Out to show my bf)
last movie i watched: i finally saw X last night! i absolutely fucking loved it and it shot to the top of my best of 2022 horror movies.
currently reading: i finally finished A Piece of Blue Sky, still haven't finished my reread of The Awakening, and started reading both In the Dream House and The Unbreakable Miss Lovely in the last 2 weeks but they're both on kindle unlimited and my trial is ending. i'll probably reset and pick up something different soon!
currently watching: season 4 of You! i adore this show.
currently consuming: 2 shots of cafe bustelo made in an aeropress with a nearly 50/50 ratio of coffee to creamer
currently craving: a really good brunch, tbh

What's your favorite app? The Kindle Unlimited app cause that’s how I do my reading, which I do a lot of.  Something that annoys you about your family? I used to get annoyed because I felt like they were nagging me and didn’t understand some things, but my stubborn ass should have listened. I know they were concerned and did it out of love, but I just didn’t wasn’t hearing it. Now I’ve been laid up in the hospital since the end of May and I don’t know how much longer I’ll be here.  Would you rather time travel into the past or future? Past so I could do some things differently and hopefully avoid where I am now. Do you get scared easily? I’m such a jumpy person.  Do you want any tattoos? I’ve wanted ‘free bird’ for several years, but I’m too much of a scardy cat to do it.
What is your favorite thing about yourself? I’m not my biggest fan to say the least. Especially right now.  What was the last song you listened to? I don’t remember.  What is your favorite meal? I looked forward to lunch and dinner, which consisted of foods like sandwiches, pizza, wings, and pasta.  Would you ever dye your hair blue? Nah. What is the saddest song you've ever heard? I don’t know, I’ve heard many.  What's the best present you've received? I couldn’t possibly choose.  What insect do you hate the most? ALL of them.  How are you feeling right now? Like shit.  What is your favorite snack? Chips and dip.  Do you have any freckles? Yes.  What is the weirdest dream you've ever had? All my dreams are weird and random.  Donuts or muffins? Mmm, both.  How many languages can you speak? Just one fluently.  Do you ever make new years resolutions? Nah, I stopped that years ago.  Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I can’t even go there right now.  Do you believe in life after death? Yes. If you were a color from the rainbow, what would you be, and why? Hm. I don’t know.  Do you ever read magazines? I haven’t in a very long time.  Do you like Chinese food? Yeah. What is the first letter of your middle name? -- Are you afraid of snakes? YES. Do you ever watch YouTube videos? Yes, all the time.  Who is your OTP? (one true pairing, a couple you really like together) I have several. My newest one is Mileven (Mike and El from Stranger Things). Would you ever have a wild animal as a pet if possible? No. What's something that has made you smile today? Nothing.

For the character ask game, gimme that Bakura and that Otogi ✌
Under a Read-More
I will be referring to Yami Bakura for this one, for TKB, that'll cost y'all another ask - cuz I can't do for Yami B. I can't. I can write any Yami B ship if asked/prompted, for sure, I can chat and headcanon for it, but any ship he's in that's not tender is Not My Bag. I'm not proud of it. It feels shallow and mean and narrow-minded. But I can't.
I have said it before, I will say it again, he belongs to that boy Ryou. Ryou Bakura can date whoever he wants. Ryou Bakura can be shipped with almost anybody and it works and is good and I like it. Yami Bakura cannot. That's Ryou's bride. That's his boy girlfriend. That's Ryou's pet malewife. I can do the BROTP tho - I think the saddest part is Malik is the closest thing he would have to a friend, and I don't even think they'd be good friends. I think a tamed Yami B could probably get along with Yuugi (The Great Equalizer), and I think he would also... acknowledge. If not respect. Honda's guts. Like it, I dunno - but he'd mention it as a factor for Honda over Jou. That's what I can offer y'all. I'm sorry.
DUKE DEVLIN ON THE OTHER HAND-
My NOTP for them - OtogixJou. There's just no real spark there, it feels like kaijou with less steps. Also not a big fan of him with Serenity or Honda, the whole love triangle feels really dull for me in it's potential. Otogi in the manga has this really sincere and soft core wrapped in eyeliner and wit and Otogi in the anime is just not as engaging with Jou as Kaiba can be. I can see the sparks, it just doesn't have any kindling for me.
My BROTP for them - Yuugi or Atem or both. They have his respect, they have his back, and they both saw him through his low point (Manga and anime respectively). In general, it is very difficult to not like Yuugi - he's kind of Disgustingly Impossible To Hate when you're in a room with him for more than 30 minutes - Atem does have a very reassuring presence to him, and they both would love any game he made. Any game that's not Duel Monsters is a whole new world, it's the same kind of love they'd have with Ryou. It works. They're besties. Otogi would definitely hang out with Atem or Yuugi or both, either on their own or with friends, and if balls hit the wall, they'd be the first person he'd talk to. [But also, Otogi being friends with Malik and then Ishizu and Rishid becoming secondhand family as a result and suddenly, he has this very wise mother bird found family sister and a SUPER empathetic Rishid who understands the things Malik cannot, and this is not a Bromance anymore, is it?]
My OTP for them - MaixOtogi. They're flawless for each other. Give it about five years and it's perfect. Their issues perfectly balance with the others strengths, they've got similar values, and they challenge each other in ways that other people really don't. Not in a super intense way, but they're both good at the push-and-pull and on the same page about it. And that's hot shit.
My second choice pairing for them  - Might be MalikxOtogi, I think I talked myself into that just now egfsfdsf
My fluffy pairing for them - Honestly both the ones I mentioned, they're both cute as shit. [I actually wrote some lightly nsfw stuff for MaixOtogi, it's right here].
My angsty pairing for them - AtemxOtogi. Anything with Atem is angsty if only because he leaves, but also this is a boy raised entirely on the idea he was destined for the Puzzle. That's gotta be complicated.
My favorite poly ship for them - I very rarely polyship.... just because that's a three-way dynamic and those are harder ones to pull off. Don't have one here, sadly.
My weirdest pairing for them - Again I think... I think the two I mentioned are - well, they're not weird, just rarepairs. IDK if I'd call that weird tho.
