Lily x MC, “That’s my ex-boyfriend/girlfriend.” - “Well, kiss me so they see.”
Lily x MC
“That’s my ex-girlfriend.” - “Well, kiss me so she sees.”
Summary: Lily and Kristen go out to a gay bar for the first time since Lily’s turning. Lily is ready to party it up with her girlfriend and other gays after being in deep with her turning, a guest from Kristen’s past shows up and threatens to ruin the whole night, or at least in Kristen’s mind!

Thanks for reading! I hope you like it!
Kristen instantly clamps her hand around Lily’s wrist yanking her off to the side towards the bathroom hiding in line behind a few people. One of the guys standing there gives them a weird look, that she waves off turning towards Lily. Her face flashing in panic as she looks around the man's waist to see if she could spot the person they were hiding from, before finally turning back to Lily again.
“My ex-girlfriend is here!” She yells at Lily, smacking her hand against Lily’s nervously, getting a smile in response from her girlfriend. “What if she sees me? Oh god, I can’t handle that. We broke up on bad terms.”
“Kristen, it’ll be fine. You’re here with me and I’m a badass, she’d run away from us.” Lily grins, cocking her head towards her with a grin. “I’ll stun her with my extensive video game knowledge.” She takes Kristen’s hand comfortably running her finger back and forth against Kristen’s soft skin.
The guy from earlier chuckles at them, trying to hide his smile. “You’re not helping!” Kristen shouts at him with a stern frown, only to get a chuckle from both him and Lily. Turning back towards Lily with a put, “We have to leave. Save ourselves.”
“We are not leaving, Kris,” Lily states, pushing on her legs to stand at full height looking around the people while Kristen pulls on her hand. “Stop, you’re going to rip my glove.” Lily laughs, peeking back over the people in front of her for any sign of someone who could resemble her ex, although she didn’t entirely know what that look would be.
“Lily! Stop! She’s going to see you!” Kristen huffs, with a pleading smile, Lily simply rests her hand against Kristen’s cheek, shaking her head with a hearty chuckle. “Lily, please.”
“She doesn’t even know me. And you’re overthinking this,” Lily shrugs looking around the club for a girl she didn’t even know what looks like still, frowning to herself, what’s her girlfriend’s type anyways? Besides stunningly gorgeous vampires with purple hair. “On that note, what does she look like? I can’t imagine she’s as stunning as me, probably doesn’t even have purple braids.”
“Lily-“
“Kristen, come on.” Lily grabs Kristen’s hand with a sigh leading her forward, “Excuse me.” She says politely to the man standing before them. The guy from earlier smiles making room for them, “you guys are so cute.” He comments as they walk past, getting a smile from Lily shot in his direction. “That guy was nice. You should’ve been nicer to him.”
“Forget that guy we’re never going to see again.” Kristen goes to protest, Lily instantly brings her finger to Kristen’s lips with a soft shushing noise.
“It’s been almost a year since I’ve been to a gay bar Kristen, let’s just enjo-“
“There she is. That’s my ex-girlfriend!” Kristen looks paler than before, watching her ex-girlfriend walk around the bar holding a drink in her hand, her face plastered with her signature beautiful smile, hitting on a girl that slightly resembled Kristen in hair and height department.
“Well, kiss me so she sees. We will have the upper hand.” Lily smiles, wrapping her arms around Kristen’s waist pulling her flush against her body. “You’ve been wanting to kiss these lips all night, don’t lie.”
“Lily!” Kristen blushes, leaning into Lily’s touch leaning up on her tiptoes to place a soft kiss on Lily’s jaw. “Are you sure?”
“Oh hell fucking yes.” Lily grins, capturing Kristen’s lips in a deep kiss, pulling her closer to her kissing her with a tremendous amount of power. Kristen moans into the kiss, her head feeling light as her hands grab onto Lily’s dress for support. Her knees wobbling feeling suddenly overwhelmed and weak, craving for even more kissing Lily with the same passion and desire.
Lily breaks the kiss leaning her forehead against Kristen’s. “Damn, see that wasn’t so bad.”
They both look over to see a waiter standing there with two drinks as he clears his throat politely to catch their attention, “Courtesy of your friend.” He signals to where Kristen’s ex is standing she waved at them with a smile, her shoulder on the cute girl she was flirting with a grin. “Two strawberry mango margarita.”
“That’s my favorite drink,” Kristen admits, accepting the drink from the waiter. “Thank you.” She instantly brings the straw to her lips taking a long sip, sighing in delight as the frozen liquids hit her lips, “Delicious.”
“Yeah, thank you.” Lily smiles taking hers, clinking it against Kristen’s glass. “I got a margarita, did you see?” She grins sheepishly, bringing the straw to her lips next, taking a sip, her eyes widening in surprise with, “Holy shit that’s delicious.”
“I saw.” Kristen laughs in reference to her first comment, “come on I’ll introduce you to my ex.” She says smiling at Lily admiringly as she takes her hand into her own walking backward to her ex-girlfriend, wiggling her eyebrows at Lily. “You always bring out the best in me.”
“I told you there was nothing to worry about.” Lily brags, “I always have your back. You're my gal pal.” Lily says teasingly.
“Yeah all hail Lily, winner of Fortnite, champion of Lookout, queen of my heart. Gal pal of my dreams.” Kristen giggles, “I love you so much, Lil.”
“That’s more like it.” Lily beams, “I love you too, Krissy!”

At the bar of Hotel Denouement, a girl with long, black hair is sipping a cocktail. Her dark blue trench coat is taken off and neatly hanged at the coat rack near the entrance, revealing the black sweater originally underneath. She’s wearing a knee length checkered skirt. It isn’t black and white patterned, but for a moment she daydreams about playing chess on it anyway.
The woman meets her gaze and smiles ambiguously, like a chess piece she can’t see the true colors, can’t see the true side.
Kit has never been able to figure out Ellington Feint’s true side.
Loyalty has always been a clear cut concept to Kit. Us and them. Volunteers versus firestarters. You’re either an ally or you’re not. Loyalty doesn’t mean “we’re always right”, but rather “I still choose us even if we’re wrong”. Because it’s not about right or wrong, it’s about us versus them. Because you can’t get trapped in the dilemma of endlessly worrying what’s right and what’s wrong.
It’s about efficiency, about getting things done. It’s about sides.
You’re either one of us or you’re not.
Ellington Feint doesn’t fit neatly into either category of us or them. Doesn’t have a clear side Kit can pinpoint her to. She’s not a white piece nor a black one, she’s several shades of gray that shouldn’t belong on a chessboard where sides of pieces are clear cut.
She’s ambiguous. Unpredictable. She smiles a smile that could’ve meant anything, she gazes at Kit with her green eyes that make Kit get lost in the depth of them, she helps occasionally, but also hinders them sometimes. She’s hard to figure out.
She criticizes VFD and she scoffs scathingly at the other side of the schism and she steals important documents but sometimes shares it with Kit, if it suits her moods. She’s volatile. Which means she’s dangerous, but honestly, isn’t everyone? Kit’s a force of danger herself.
It’s us or it’s them or just irrelevant, but Ellington Feint is not us, is not them, and is certainly never ever irrelevant. Not to Kit, anyway.
“I don’t see what’s ambiguous about her, I don’t see how you can’t ‘figure her out’,” B remarks. “Anyone else doing the same thing you would’ve already labeled them not one of us. It’s not like you have never gotten involved with an enemy before, you still think of them as an enemy at the same time.” He adjusts his glasses, a pretentious move in Kit’s opinion. “The only reason you consider her ambiguous is that you actually like her and don’t want to label her an enemy.”
“Go away,” Kit says.

AU where kit and ellington had a cat together and one time they’re about to go on a vacation where it’d be inconvenient to take the cat with them and while previously kit was going to ask bertrand to look after the cat, he got pulled into some vfd mission at the last minute so kit asked jacques, who up to the point did not even know that kit and ellington had a cat together “what do you mean together” and then said “why don’t you leave it at the hotel”
and kit said she didn’t want the cat to wander around the hotel when the triplets were busy being workaholics, who knew what kind of guests might be there, and in the end jacques very reluctantly agreed. while he was annoyed that kit and ellington had a cat together he did find the cat cute and by the time kit and ellington got back he’s refusing to give them back the cat, and ellington made some comment about “you’re so used to taking children without returning them to their parents why am i surprised you’re now not returning our cat.”

bertrand had gotten kit a set of very realistic looking fake driver’s licenses earlier, so she hadn’t been expecting more birthday surprises.
and then a girl in disguises showed up, but despite the wig and the glasses, kit saw through who she was at once.
“i brought you someone,” he said, “don’t tell your brothers, though. she’s waiting in the taxi.”
“how is she inside the taxi if neither of my brothers let her in?”
“i assume someone good with breaking in taught her once,” he suggested. “do hurry before J discovers and complains about me doing this to him on his birthday.”
so now she’s on the taxi, with the girl in the disguise. “happy birthday, miss snicket,” said ellington feint as she took of the wig and the glasses.

“You are not your past mistakes, Miss Feint,” Kit says, evenly. Measuredly.
Ellington looked back, green eyes deeply unfathomable. “No,” she agreed. “You are.” She exhaled. “You’re my past mistake. As I am yours, Miss Snicket.”
Inevitably, Kit was reminded of that bright, colorful, disastrous month a decade ago. It felt like a blur now, a flurry of events, of wild, wild nights of sneaking out of the headquarters and secret rendezvous at city library during sunny afternoons. A summer romance that didn’t as the season changed.
She hadn’t been that reckless for a long time.
“True,” Kit agreed. “Would you also like to be a future one?”

you know those movies with the protagonist having a best friend at the beginning and then some circumstances happened and the protag started hanging out with the supposedly “cooler” group or something and neglected the best friend for a while and then the whole thing didn’t work out and ended disastrously and then realized the best friend was who the one who had always been there all along
this is like some formula for beatrice and kit and when beatrice started hanging out with esme and the rest of the theater people and also started dating esme. and then after a seemingly successful at first sugar bowl theft thing started going wrong and ultimately did not end well. after a few glorious months that’s all gone and beatrice realized kit was the one who’d been there all along,
except that kit did not just sit there and wait, and actually been hanging out with ellington who beatrice hadn’t even realized had been popping up in kit’s life more and more often. and beatrice knew she had no right to be jealous after everything but she was a bit jealous especially now that she suddenly went from all these fun and glory and wild times with esme to none of those. also ellington with her goth aesthetic got beatrice secretly convinced that kit was definitely seeking someone who reminded her of beatrice and still missed beatrice the most despite hanging out with ellington more now.
beatrice did not choose to voice her suspicions out loud (for now) because she was aware how jealous and egotistic that would sound. she would eventually unable to resist accusing kit of this when they had an argument later and that would lead to a huge fight in which kit would push beatrice against a wall and for a moment beatrice would feel that it was almost as if they were about to kiss, and then the door would open and it was jacques coming back into the apartment he and kit shared. kit would freeze and started backing off slowly and picked up her jacket on the chair and left without another word and drove to ellignton’s coffee shop.
jacques looked at beatrice and slowly asked “did i interrupt something?” and beatrice took a moment to steady herself and brightened up impressively and said “nothing at all! so how is jerome?”

imagine, if you will, a sitcom with ensemble cast, featuring sugar bowl generation in their early 20s
now imagine you’re like, in the second or third season, maybe, and the 13th episode, now, here we go
previously in the last episode beatrice has just convinced jerome to go on the trip with them, and even though jerome is slightly nervous about the trip, he is also excited to travel with jacques, so he agreed.
episode starts with a scene of jacques and jerome and beatrice and lemony in a van borrowed from r. they’re going on a trip to hinterlands. beatrice tells everyone who are’t going “try not be too bored without me”.
but this episode is actually not about their trip. that would be in the next episode when they come back, and the trip would be told in different narrations / flashbacks. different people would also tell the same event very differently.
now, this episode is about what happens back in the city while they are gone, mostly taking place in hotel denouement, but also inside the snicket taxi driving on the city streets, and a coffee shop.
so, the van drives away slowly with jacques in the drivers seat, jerome sitting beside him, lemony and beatrice in the back. jacques, the responsible driver, drives to a gas station first. he gets out of the van to fill the gas. beatrice jumps to the front, invades the driver’s seat, and declares she’s driving, and jacques better get in the backseat later or else she’s going to drive away with “your brother and your jerome”
jacques reluctantly gets in the backseat, and after a few seconds he asks, “did you just say my jerome?” beatrice: “no, i said ‘your jerome’, you’re the one who said ‘my jerome’.”
cuts to different scene, kit and bertrand are in the snicket taxi, they talk about random stuff until an argument that’s been occurring recently comes up again (bertrand and ernest’s odd flirting), this time a little more heated than before. also they’re both slightly stressed about some vfd stuff which does not help. words are exchanged, olaf is mentioned, “at least i never dated him when he’s a firestarter”, “ernest and i, we’re not actually dating, you’ve realized”, etc,
things escalates quickly, taxi crashes into a mailbox, kit says “get out of my taxi”. bertrand stares at her for a moment and then opens the door and leaves without another word. kit drives off. wanders the street for a while before finding herself at the street of ellington’s coffee shop.
scene cuts to hotel denouement lobby. frank is at the front desk, he goes through many internal dialogues with himself. starting from analyzing the situation “bertrand’s carefully neutral blank expression he used to get when he and kit get into a large fight.” and then the very obvious answer as to what the argument is about. and then (accurately, according to himself) predicting what is going to happen next (that is, if he doesn’t interfere).
frank thinks bertrand is probably going to talk to ernest, who is probably not going to be happy about whatever kit might’ve said, and then for a number of different reasons, from being mad at kit and wanting to annoy her, to just sitting there talking to each other and feeling something, and both feeling somewhat impulsive for a moment ... frank doesn’t want to continue to imagine what will happen from there, but he thinks he might have an idea what that would lead to, and he thinks no matter how far things actually go, if kit was annoyed at simply flirting before, more than flirting is probably going to make their fight worse.
personally, frank doesn’t care that much about kit and bertrand fighting, but he knows dewey gets upset at these things, so he has to care.
in frank’s opinion, bertrand in a specific mood to make impulsive choices is not a good sign. bertrand is not good at making excellent impulsive decisions, he’s a planning type of person and he can plans in detail after mental analysis of situations, and makes fairly good decisions after that, but he doesn’t have an instinct for making the correct decision when he’s doing it base on impulse. (beatrice, on the other hand, kind of has a knack for it. frank doesn’t tell her that, because if he does he knows she would get incredibly smug.)
predictably, bertrand asks about finding ernest at the front desk, frank invites him to wait in his office while he go finds ernest. frank locks bertrand up in his office and the goes to talk to ernest about how he must not sleep with bertrand at least not today. ernest reluctantly agrees and promises he won’t (at least not today), after making pros and cons list inside his head. the cons list’s first item is “b&k fight worsening would upset dewey and i don’t want to upset dewey”. it’s the main con, almost possibly the only one. (well, not the only one, because as much as kit annoys him ernest does know she’s a very important friend to bertrand and bertrand would not want to do something impulsive and resulting to prolong his and kit’s fight, and he can’t believe he cares enough to admit to himself that also makes this point goes on the con list, but the fact is he does care.)
scene cuts to kit drinking coffee with ellington. kit drinks ice coffee and chews ice cube in it. coffee and ice and ellington feint, three habits kit previously thought she’d moved on from. she’s now indulging in all three at once. well, she thinks she deserves some indulgence at the moment. ellington asks how she’s doing recently, and jazz music plays in the background.
next scene: frank tells bertrand that ernest is busy and escorts him out of the hotel, watching him leave.
next scene: ellington shows kit a picture of her new cat, kit shows ellington a picture of her brother in a crowd (allegedly), because that’s the only picture she has on her at the moment.
next scene: ernest sulks, decides to distract himself by inviting dewey to watch a movie together. they watch a gustav sebald production: handsome herpetologist in the reptile room. there is no plot, but the actors are hot.
a few day pass, some things happen, some more scenes.
kit and bertrand reconcile because they never really fight for too long, there’s some stiff and awkward scene, and then one of them suggest a truce and the other agree. then they exchange gossip about other people and quickly slip back to their usual atmosphere.
bertrand aggressively cleans the taxi as silent apology, kit carefully avoids arguing with ernest for a few days as a gesture.
next scene: beatrice comes back to find she missed all the drama, asks around but no one would provide her the details she want (kit tells her “it’s over now don’t worry, do you want to see a picture of cat?” bertrand insists it’s not that big of a deal to begin with, dewey says “i am devastated every time they fight don’t make me relive that but anyway frank saves the day like a hero”, ernest says “i have demonstrated remarkable self control and that’s all you need to know”), so she ends up in frank’s office trying to annoy him into telling her. he does paper work without looking up at her.
beatrice: “frank, have you been manipulating the intricate webs of our friend circle for the greater good without me?! i can’t believe i missed all of these. tell me everything that happened and what have you done to ‘save the day’, as dewey said.”
frank: “b and k fought and then they’re not fighting anymore. end of the story.”
beatrice: “but what’s the part you played? tell me! why does this has to happen while i was away, with also exciting things that i couldn’t miss either! lemony and i explored a bat cave and i rode an eagle and jerome got too terrified and asked lemony and jacques and i to please not visit him for a while and i almost got bitten by a beautiful snake monty would love -”
frank interrupts: “what’s that again?”
beatrice: “i almost got bitten by a beautiful sna-”
frank: “no, not that, i don’t care”
beatrice: “wow that’s so cold blooded.”
frank: “yes fine whatever so what’s it you’re saying about jerome telling jacques?”
beatrice leans forward with a sly grin, “tell me about what happened when i was away first.”
[end episode]

one time when kit and ellington got into this fight ellington accused kit of not really loving her, and just saw her as some kind of escape from vfd when needed. a connection to the outside world away from vfd that she used when she needed to take a break when vfd got too much, but to be discarded when she needed to focus on “volunteer work” again. kit was very hurt and angry at the accusation because she did love ellington and she couldn’t believe ellington think that’s true. it took them some time to reconcile from that even though after that fight it was never the same between them and they eventually did break up.
kit remembered ellington’s words from that day very clearly, like they’re etched into her heart and she couldn’t forget them if she tried. and one day, when she and jacques were fighting, she turned out to accuse jacques of the same thing but in regards to jerome. she told him that he was only using jerome as an escape because he’s the only person jacques was close too who didn’t know about all the vfd messiness, and with him jacques could pretend to be in a different world, and that was all there was and he wasn’t really in love with jerome at all, just the idea of a more peaceful life.
after the fight, jacques and kit didn’t speak again for months.

edits for fics i might or might not write: hold on tight
“Have you ever ridden a motorcycle before?” Filene N. Gottlin asked skeptically. Kit was sure that’s not her real name, but it didn’t matter now.
She had, on the backseat with her mother in front, but Kit thought it counted. “Of course,” she took over the key briskly. She climbed onto the motorcycle and started it up, Filene following her lead.
After a moment of hesitance, Filene wrapped her arms around Kit’s waist, and Kit stilled for a moment trying to decipher the soft feeling of those arms on her. She swallowed, suddenly nervous, not really about the motorcycle.
“Hold on tight,” Kit said.

Idk if you’re still taking these but....K/E (ellington)
So, like, technically, Kit wouldn’t say she’s the type to drunk-dial an ex. She’d never called Olaf when drunk after they’d broken up. Actually, she’d never called him again ever, drunk or sober, so it didn’t matter anyway. She’d never called Esme either - well, admittedly, she had tried once, but it was the wrong number because Esme liked to change her phone number every once in a while to make sure the number stayed in, and Kit had long lost track.
As for Ellington Feint -
Yes, she’d called Ellington a couple of times, but on the other hand, it wasn’t as if they were actually ex-girlfriends. Like, sure, they had an odd relationship, but it had never been a relationship relationship, it’s not as if they’d ever officially called themselves girlfriends.
So maybe they drifted apart sometimes over the years, and then drifted back closer, and then apart again, and then closer. So maybe when during the closer days, they would meet up for brunch when Kit wasn’t busy with a mission, and Kit would actually manage to climb out of bed and drove to meet Ellington at the brunch place, even if she usually like to sleep in if she didn’t have work at the moment. So maybe they’d gone out to some local jazz pubs and Ellington’s green eyes had looked exceptionally bright in contrast to the dim lighting and Kit had felt like she was ready to get lost in those green eyes.
So maybe they had more than once, more than twice, or maybe more than five times somehow ended up being getaway drivers for each other over the years. So maybe sometimes they visited each other’s apartment. So maybe Ellington always worried about the dangerous missions and asked her to stay safe.
It wasn’t like that she was actually an ex, because technically they had never been girlfriends.
So yeah, calling Ellington while two drinks in definitely did not count as drunk-dialing one’s ex, because Kit Snicket was not the type to drunk-dial an ex. She’s sensible and logical and not her twin, who had not only once showed up at Jerome’s expensive penthouse at midnight and then getting kicked out by Esme before he even had a chance to see Jerome. Kit was not Jacques.
Plus, it was only two drinks in, she wasn’t even drunk anyway. And Ellington’s not an ex. So none of the criteria fit.
Kit pressed call and waited.
“Hello,” Ellington’s voice came from the other end of the line.
“Miss Feint,” Kit said, “I hope this isn’t an inconvenient time.”
“Well, Miss Snicket,” Ellington replied. “Aside from the jazz record I just put on and the candle I just lit up and the gothic romance novel I’m about to read, I’m otherwise unoccupied. So no, it’s not an inconvenient time.”
“What does the candle look like?” Kit asked curiously.
“A white cylinder, mostly,” Ellington said, and there was an hint of amusement to her voice. “Milky white.”
“What’s the record you’re playing?” Kit asked next.
“Can’t you guess?” Ellington asked, humming along the tunes in the background just a bit. Even after so many years, Kit still marveled at the absolute magnetism of her voice that just had the power of drawing everyone in. ( “There’s no ‘everyone’,” Jacques had commented in irritation, “it’s just you.” But Jacques was enchanted by Jerome, so Kit didn’t care about his opinion on this.)
“It’s too faint in the background,” Kit said, after frowning in concentration trying to decipher the song. It was probably because the connection wasn’t very good, not because she was drunk or anything.
“Perhaps you would like to join me in my apartment, for better quality of the tunes, compared to listening to it through the phone?” Ellington suggested.
Kit sighed. “That’s a lovely idea,” she said. “Unfortunately, I’m not in The City currently and am calling you from the headquarters in the mountains.”
“Unfortunate indeed.”
“Perhaps next time,” Kit said, picturing Ellington at her apartment in The City, reclining against her sofa as she took this phone call, idling playing with her hair at the same time.
“Perhaps next time,” Ellington agreed. “Good night, Miss Snicket.”
“Good night, Miss Feint.”
Next time never came.

anyway i have been thinking about ellington and ernest and predictably this had something to do with kit and bertrand.
like. i think about how kit was aware of vfd’s flaws but also knew she would never be able to leave [*keane voice*  too tired to fight and yet too scared to run] while ellington distrusted vfd and wished to have the less to do with them the better while being very aware kit’s involvement and unlikeliness to leave, meanwhile kit also knew ellington’s views on vfd. they both tried to make a relationship work but eventually it .... didn’t. the disagreements became to large and the dangerous missions one after one became too much as the schism got worse. they broke up, which, in light of everything, wasn’t surprising.
meanwhile ernest and bertrand had something neither of them would define as a relationship and a mutual understanding that whatever this not-a-relationship thing was, it was something that would probably end someday as the schism worsened. they both made some efforts to delay that inevitable end. but then it eventually did end and then they both liked to pretend everything was completely casual and fun with zero amount of bittersweet, because it was easier to pretend so.
so like, i have this brotp, and then they each had ex-lover (or, however you call someone who you’d technically never been together with but parted ways anyway), which ..... makes for interesting dynamics. and definitely e&e would have met considering they were hanging around the same pair of best friends during roughly the same era, and they might also be aware of the other person’s complicated relationship with that pair of best friends, and also vfd politics. so even if they didn’t interacted that much directly (and who knew, maybe they did), they might have a certain kind of ... understanding.
and here’s the thing. kit stayed in vfd, and bertrand, while arguably did not completely, entirely made a clean cut, was more distanced from vfd to a degree. to a degree, he and beatrice left. what bertrand and ernest had eventually ended not exactly because they both got deeper into each of their own side, but rather one of them left - if both of them stayed, would it have been easier to continue what they had? maybe not, but also maybe yes and it would always remain an unanswerable question since things didn’t go that way. on the other hand ... kit was still heavily involved in vfd and despite not agreeing with all of vfd’s ideals still centered, revolved her life around it, and all the friends and enemies within it.
did this make ellington and ernest somewhat envious of each other? did ellington wish kit could have left vfd, like bertrand did, even if not completely, as least as not heavily involved and maybe they could compromise and maybe work things out? maybe they wouldn’t have to give up? did ernest wish bertrand could have stayed within vfd, like kit did, even if this meant they would continue to be on opposite sides, but at least they could be friendly enemies who flirted instead of familiar strangers who instead of trying to subtly fish for information from each other in a conversation just not meet again anymore? at least, whatever complicated relationship they had could maybe continue instead of ending? did they envy each other and wished they swapped places? were e&e both aware of this? did they ever talk about that? did they keep in touch in some form after each of their break up (or, whatever you call it when you ended something with someone who you’d never actually been together)?
did ellington knew about dewey? could she tell the denouement triplets apart?  or maybe she couldn’t directly tell the triplets apart but she, as she grew older, had on some occasions been practicing imitating other’s people’s voices and gotten perfect at it, could now also imitate the triplets’ voice directly, which totally startled ernest a couple of times and made him wish that she could tell them apart and not be able to imitate their voices perfectly instead because the latter was more complicated to deal with in a way.
e, feigning casualness and pretending not to worry about k’s safety while k was constantly putting herself in danger: so, how has ms snicket been recently? she didn’t go on any dangerous mission recently, did she?
e, pretending to be f: i cannot divulge organization secret to an outsider.
e, arching her eyebrows, which curved up like question marks, slowly picked up the phone at hotel lobby, dialing the number of baudelaire mansion, imitating the denouements’ voice perfectly: hello, may i speak to mr bau-
e, grabbing the phone from e: wrong number, sorry. *hangs up the phone*.
toddler violet, on the other end of the phone in the middle of trying to take it apart but not successful yet: *confused expression*
e, resigned: alright, alright! snicket’s fine. she registered her address as the hotel so we kept receiving speeding tickets sent here every few days. she’s out there and terrorizing pedestrians and other cars, apparently, so that means she’s fine. if you want a ticket as souvenir we got a bunch, take whichever you want

“You shouldn’t drink coffee without eating breakfast,” E frowned, her eyebrows curving into the shape of question marks.
K raised an eyebrow, “You drink coffee.” She pointed out.
“Not first thing in the morning and without eating anything for several hours until lunch,” E said. “There’s a difference. You know I adore you, but I couldn’t possibly on good conscience let you do that.”
“Does it matter, though? In the grander scheme of things?” K asked. She meant “does how I take the coffee matter in the grander scheme of things?”
“That I adore you?” E asked. She paused briefly and K was about to clarify, but E continued. “Some days I think that’s the grander scheme of things.”
K blinked. E fished out a small packet of crackers from her bag. “Come on, have something to go with the coffee.”

lemony’s eloquent and could think up of tens of, or even hundreds of ways to describe his love, and kit wished to be like her brother too, but she didn’t know how. she didn’t know how to do grand love declarations such as “i will love you as a thief loves a gallery and as a crow loves a murder” or “i will love you as a volunteer fire department loves rushing into burning buildings and as burning buildings love to chase them back out.”
she only knew how to say “keep this skeleton key with you, a girl should always have a skeleton key with her and i already have plenty” and gave a skeleton key with her initial engraved away. she only knew how to say “i can’t promise not to go on missions assigned to me from the organization, but i can promise i will let you know which place they are sending me to”  even though she’s not supposed to give these kind of details of a mission away to an outsider. ( “is that a compromise you really want to make?” b asked, and she replied, “it’s a promise i’m willing to make.” and b looked at her for a long time and shrugged, “don’t let jacques know”)
kit didn’t know how to do grand love declarations, she only knew how to say “tell me about these jazz records of yours” or “yes, of course i would like to try the coffee you made”. she only knew how to say “hold on tight, i’m about to speed up” or “call me when you get back to the coffee shop, will you?”

skeleton keys of yesterday, train rides into tomorrow
“Could you tell me more about Mother?” Beatrice looked at Ellington, eyes curious and wondering and yearning. She leaned forwards a little, propping her arm onto the table in front of her.  Ellington gazed out the window at the sceneries fast flying past them as the train ran forwards, and then looked back at Beatrice again.
She looked so much like Kit - the Kit that Ellington remembered from their teenage years.

jacques disapproved of kit dating someone who disapproved of vfd but like deep down he was jealous that despite their differences kit and ellington managed to made it work despite their arguments they had reached certain compromises and at least kit didn’t really have to lie to ellington about it and deep down jacques was jealous of that because he had to keep the secrets from jerome and not tell him about vfd while simultaneously trying to use jerome’s large fortune to secure vfd headquarters and feeling guilty about it and never trying to ask jerome out because of all this and did he envy what kit and ellington had did he wish he and jerome could have that? yes
