Fascia, the unsung hero of our body's anatomy, often remains an enigma even to health enthusiasts. This network of connective tissue, often visualized as a spiderweb encasing muscles, bones, and organs, has a far greater role than mere structural support. Here's something that many might find surprising: Fascia is a major player in our sensory system.
Recent studies reveal that fascia contains a wealth of sensory nerves, making it almost as sensitive as skin. This discovery has profound implications, particularly in understanding chronic pain and mobility issues. It suggests that what we often perceive as muscle pain might actually originate from the fascia. This insight is revolutionizing pain management and physical therapy approaches, shifting focus from muscles and bones to this intricate web.
Moreover, fascia's fluidity and elasticity are critical in athletic performance. It's not just muscle strength and endurance that dictate performance, but also the health and flexibility of the fascia. Proper hydration and targeted stretching can enhance fascial health, thus potentially improving athletic abilities and reducing injury risk.
Fascia, therefore, is not just a passive structure; it's an active, sensory organ that plays a key role in pain perception, movement efficiency, and overall well-being. This perspective elevates the importance of fascial health, paving the way for innovative wellness and therapeutic practices.

HEART-NECK-PAIN-LINK
THE PERICARDIUM
[FASCIAL ANATOMY - OSTEOPATHIC APPROACH]
This post and illustrations are an amazing follow up to my previous post about the pericardium and connection to neck pain.
The heart (1) has obvious importance for sustaining life but it has a lesser known connection to the more “orthopedic” problems commonly seen amongst patients. Specifically, the fascial outer layering called the pericardium is directly connected to multiple tissues in the thorax and spine.
On the anterior is the connection to the sternum (2) via the superior and inferior sternopericardiac ligaments (3,4). Superiorly, the link is the cervico-pericardiac ligament (5), which is connected to the deep cervical fascia (green) and houses the trunk of the brachio-cephalic vein (6). Inferiorly, the pericardium directly connects to the diaphragm (7). Lastly, and perhaps most interesting, is the posterior-superior connection to the cervical spine. The Vertebro-pericardiac ligament (8) directly connects the heart to the anterior aspects of C6 and C7.
Tension on bones is not just muscular, but can be from visceral connections such as this. Tension in this tissue can contribute the anterior translation and sheer forces in the vertebrae and discs. This raises the question why we see so much degeneration, disc herniation and pain at the lower cervical spine. Perhaps a direct connection of cervical problems to poor breathing patterns? Maybe we can positively influence the heart via the neck as therapists? The anatomical LINKS provide us the possibilities!
How I manipulate the pericardium with a fascial recoil technique via the sternum you can see in my previous post. You can influence the pericardium via the superior and inferior sternopericardiac ligaments (3,4).

FASCIAL ARTICULATIONS ⠀ [FASCIAL ANATOMY - OSTEOPATHIC APPROACH] ⠀ The concept of a joint in the body is commonly understood as a junction of two bones such as the elbow. ⠀ However, another definition of a joint is “the linear or angular displacement between two separate biological elements”. ⠀ In essence, a joint can be comprised of any biological tissues that needs to move, pivot or slide/glide around one another. This concept is applied to many soft tissue and fascial links in the body. A junction of two fascial planes in the body typically requires a sliding interface where each layer moves opposite of the other. ⠀ This is referred to as a “fascial articulation” and they are numerous in the human body. This can be between specific fascial layers such as the thoracic diaphragm and the endothoracic fascia or simply between a muscle and it’s superficial fascial layer. An example of motion is ankle plantarflexion, which require bony translation of the talus-tibia but also sliding of the extensor tendons under the retinaculum, effectively creating a fascial articulation. ⠀ These joints need to be evaluated and treated for mobility and function just like bony joints as the two types of joints work in unison to create global body movements. ⠀ In the 2nd diagram, the red arrows represent high value fascial articulations or links. ⠀ Each joint is a connection of separate tissues that requires hydration, elasticity and space to function optimally. Very often, due to trauma, inflammation or inappropriate loading, these tissues become adhered to one another and lose their capacity to slide. This is a “fascial joint dysfunction” and needs to be identified and treated. ⠀ Once fascial dynamics are restored, it is interesting to observe that bony joint restrictions will often improve or resolve. ⠀ Credit @AnatomyLinks & S. So I finally traveled down and saw my osteopath today and oh boy. Turns out when I had COVID and it messed with my breathing, it had made my diaphragm seize up on one side, which pulled some ribs down and got them stuck, which fucked up my shoulder-blade and stopped my arm moving properly, causing my neck and trap issues and migraines and my shoulder to drop out and keep subluxating.
And the ribs being out fucked up my hip and knee and ankle hence the needing a stick all the time and not being able to walk much. All from fucking COVID which I could have avoided if the school kept on distancing and wearing masks or at least bubbling classrooms, but no, we're all "back to normal" because screw disabled people I guess.
We've fixed about 80% of what was wrong because my body reacts to lots of changes by seizing up and spasming, so we didn't want to overdo it and make things awful like has happened in the past.
On the plus side it's a lovely day and I've sat in the park for a couple of hours before my train back, so despite feeling exhausted from all the manipulation I'm pretty chilled.

Achilles tendinitis is a common condition that occurs when the large tendon that runs down the back of the lower leg becomes irritated and inflamed. The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body. It connects the calf muscles to the heel bone and is used when you walk, run, climb stairs, jump, and stand on your tip toes. Although the Achilles tendon can withstand great stresses from running and jumping, it is also prone to tendinitis, a condition associated with overuse. Simply defined, tendinitis (also spelled "tendonitis") is acute inflammation of a tendon. Inflammation is the body's natural response to injury and often causes swelling, pain, or irritation. You may also come across the term "tendinopathy," which is used to describe a condition in which the tendon develops microscopic degeneration as a result of chronic damage over time. 🦵🦶🏃🏼‍♂️ #achilliestendonitis #achilles #sportsinjury #tendonitis #tendonpain #massage #remedialmassage #myotherapy #clinicalmyotherapy #myotherapyclinic #sportsmassage #deeptissuemassage #massagetherapy #lympathicdrainage #massagemelbourne #pregnancymassage #myotherapymelbourne #relaxationmassage #osteopathy #dryneedling #cuppingtherapy #tensmachine #massagemelbourne #massagenorthcote #massagenearme #northcote #thornbury #fitzroy #brunswick #ivanhoe #preston (at Motion Myotherapy Northcote Remedial Massage Melbourne) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci6P0eWPChZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

🚨 Dead Butt Syndrome: What You Need to Know 🚨
I wanted to shed light on an increasingly common issue in today's sedentary world Dead Butt Syndrome (DBS), or medically known as Gluteal Amnesia.
🔍 What is Dead Butt Syndrome?
DBS occurs when the gluteus medius, one of the three major muscles in the buttocks, becomes weakened and stops functioning correctly. This can be due to prolonged sitting or poor posture and lack of targeted activation.
🔴 Symptoms to Look Out For:
1. Lower back pain.
2. Hip pain.
3. Difficulty in climbing stairs or standing from a seated position.
4. Instability or discomfort while walking.
💪 Self-help Remedies:
1. Regular Breaks: Every hour, take a 5-minute walking or standing break.
2. Strengthening Exercises: Glute bridges, clamshells, and step-ups can help activate and strengthen the glutes.
3. Stretching: Incorporate hip flexor stretches to combat the effects of prolonged sitting.
4. Mindful Posture: Be conscious of maintaining a neutral spine when sitting and activating your core, but do not forget the body isn’t made for sitting!
If you've tried these strategies and are still facing discomfort or pain, considering a more holistic approach might be the way forward.
🌿 Osteopathy for a Holistic Approach:
Osteopathy can provide a comprehensive assessment and holistic treatment, addressing not only the affected area but also related structures that might contribute to the problem.
Remember, our bodies are interconnected systems. When one part suffers, it can have ripple effects. Listen to your body, keep it moving, and don't hesitate to seek help if needed!
Stay active and healthy, everyone! 💼🚶‍♂️
