For Shades of Magic, what do you think of all the various villains/antagonists? Obviously, the Dane Twins and Osaron, but I'm also interested in your thoughts on George IV, Maxim and Emira, Berras, Ezril, and anyone else you consider to be in that category.
I will also make some theories about Threads so there will be spoilers!
Well, if we have to talk about who was better as a villain, it's a match between Osaron and the Dane twins. I would call this first group "the villains that were so hard to beat and we're not sure are really dead".
Osaron was the typical evil that was around you but you couldn't see and it was difficult to destroy - in fact we see how that went. It needed to be contained but it wasn't truly destroyed.
The Dane twins also scared the shit out of me because they weren't just cruel, they were plain crazy and unpredictable. It would be interesting if they were to come back, because sometimes I'm not sure they really left. What if they went to Black London? What if, when someone dies because of Antari magic, they are sent there? Because killing them looked so easy.
I'm still convinced that Kosika might've brought something to White London and it might be a mix of evil forces who have taken the shape of Holland. Perhaps they never even left White London.
Then there's a second group that I would define as "the villains who tried so hard and who are likely going to fail" and I would put Berras and maybe Ezril. Berras never posed a threat until he used the bracelet to steal Lila's power. I never took him too seriously to be honest, because he was covering for Ezril. Ezril is still a mystery. Since she's a priest, she might have skills we don't know about, like some kind of borrowed magic too. I think she will lay low because she needs Rhy and the others not to suspect her, so she can spy from the inside. We see that Kell doesn't seem to like her, and I hope he keeps an eye on her because it's clear Rhy trusts her too easily. She will also probably use her intel and her being a trusted person in the castle to steal any of Nadiya's trinkets (she probably gave Berras the ring and the bracelet). She might be outed in Threads #2, because I believe there is someone even bigger than her behind the Hand, even though we know her motive for treason is that her family is third in line after Nadiya's family. She would kill two birds with one stone if she got rid of the king and queen, but we all know that Rhy will only die if Kell dies, so... I expect things like a murder attempt at Kell or LIla both.
I am afraid because I also remember about the knife Lila nicks in the tavern that can kill someone using their power against them... even so, do you know what makes me feel like even Ezril will not win? It's because of the bond that now exists between Lila and Kell. I believe that by giving him a thread of her magic, Lila might've bound herself to Kell the same way he bound himself to Rhy. But for them, this may work differently: this connection could amplify their magic unbeknownst to them. The ring/bracelet might've been a foreshadowhing of that.
The last group is about "the ones who I wanted to slap so hard because they watched everyone from their high horse but were scum". I would put king George IV and Maxim and Emira, obviously. George was just plain annoying and I was glad when Kell literally said fuck you and stopped visiting him. I'm curious to know how he's doing, though, because I don't think Lila updates us on the king in Grey London? I hope they will go again in Threads #2, but so far he isn't a threat even though the fact that the box containing Osaron's power is in Grey makes it possible for the king to attempt to steal the power. We know he went to the Five Points to look for Kell, and he might do it again. I wonder what could happen if such a great power were to be used in Grey London. Would the magic tip from one London to another? Is that the reason why magic in Red London seems to have changed?
Last but not least, Maxim and Emira. I hated them with a passion. They weren't good parents not even to their biological son, but I mostly hated how they treated Kell like an object they owned and not as a human being. They are one of the root causes of Kell's abandonment issues too. The poor guy just wanted to be loved and being treated like an equal, but they only gave him a mere title to make people believe he was part of the family but he was their watchdog, basically. I was so glad when they died, because it served them right.
I think I said enough haha! I might add more in future posts because I plan a Threads reread and there is still a lot to say :) Thanks for the question!

Somebody was long overdue for a redesign (and a design that actually went beneath the bust)- here’s Osaron in all his shadowy, flowery, “ancient-thing-that-crawled-out-of-the-leaf-litter-after-being-buried-for-hundreds-of-years” glory! I like to think he started off with just the black stony skin and his thread cloak when Holland found him, and then as he goes through the other worlds he adds the threads and ribbons to try and “fill himself up.” The red markings are a sign his magic is active. Also he’s always been digitigrade in my mind, I think it’s fun.

Thought experiment: So Osaron is usually a spooky shadow creature or a disembodied voice but in that time when he was half-possessing/manipulating Holland, do you think it ever tried to look like Vortalis?
Because that's a wound that's barely been allowed to heal, a death Holland couldn't really grieve under the Danes and even though he's free form them now, he's ruling alone.
Now he's working with an oshoc he doesn't fully trust but then it looks like Vortalis-
It's not a perfect replica. The voice and mannerisms aren't real enough. But it's a reminder that always catches him off-guard, a constant confrontation of what he's lost but also a reminder of what they were fighting for.
And maybe in brief moments he can almost pretend Vortalis isn't dead.

Second time reading acol and I hate the beginning just as much, not in a it's badly written way but because I'm so frustrated with emira
(Putting the rest under read more because it got long and ranty, tw for some discussion on self harm and a suicide adjacent moment)
Like there is something that bothers me so much about the attitude surrounding kell being imprisoned and basically tortured, only focusing on how this is bad for rhy. Like emira is sitting there praying saying that kell would never let rhy die, but she doesn't know that his magic is cut off. From her perspective rhys death means kell is off somewhere dying painfully as well and there is no sympathy for that. What happends to him is just a (albeit horrible) side effect of something happening ti kell, it's like the fire alarm going off and being upset that it's loud instead of being concerned by a fire.
"a mother never abandons her child" - Ma'am you have two!
Which is why their hug when he returns rings so hollow to me. Narratively it's the moment where they make up (to some degree) and they recognize that he truly is the only thing keeping rhy there. But it doesn't recognize that this is their fault, he ran away from them, their actions where the ones that actually put rhy in danger. Kell was hurt and that isn't just bad because it hurts rhy as well, its bad because it matters because kell is a human being and it matters if he's in pain. It just feeds into the idea that his life only had worth if it's for the purpose of protecting rhy
I actually kinda wish for that reason that lila hadn't healed him before them reuniting, when he comes back to them he's fine and they don't get to see the horror of what he experienced, what situation their actions pushed him into. Because I wonder if to some degree kell constantly using his blood for magic and his antari powers making him heal better has made them think of it as less of a concern like he's invincible (which to be fair he kinda is but that doesn't mean it's pleaseant). There is something fucked up in general about desensitizing a child towards hurting himself to the point that he doesn't hesitate to slit his own wrists. Cutting yourself is not some easy casual thing to do, it takes a lot of willpower. The antari have to use their blood and it's for a reason but it's always struck out to me how often they are just expected to hurt themselves because of it. Which is not specifically emira and maxims fault but fascinating none the less, tho I should probably end here since I'm rambling away from the subject.

DEMO | 2 chapters, 80K words
In the underworld kingdom, where demons fight for survival against the abyssal monsters, you are just an Oracle. In the distant past the Oracles were at the top of the demonic hierarchy, but those golden days are long gone. You did what you were most afraid to do and now sit under arrest in the royal palace.
When the Abyss sends you a vision of a terrible disaster that will happen in the future, you make an inevitable “deal” with the Sovereign to try to change the future and improve your abilities, not only to become stronger and learn more about the coming disaster, but also in an attempt to achieve mind stability.
However, what has been happening to you since you received the vision makes you think that you are already slowly but surely losing your mind.
Will you be able to maintain your sanity and help others protect the kingdom, or will you become just another name in the long list of Oracles gone mad?
This is an interactive fantasy story with a heavy focus on friendship and romance (with strangers to lovers or enemies dynamic). The story is rated 18+. Content warnings: violence, death, loss of sanity, trauma, possible sexually suggestive/sexual content, and more (the full list is in the demo).
Tumblr media
Customize your Oracle: pronouns, traits, and appearance. Choose your full ✨ demonic form. ✨
Decide what you do for fun. Do you sing, dance, paint, play a musical instrument, or write?
Deal with the old friends who let you down.
What you did cannot be undone. Your reputation forever ruined, how will you handle the public’s new attitude toward you?
Learn more about the Oracles’ past and what truly drove their royal clan into ruin.
Maintain your sanity. Depending on your choices, you’ll either move closer to loss of control and madness or further away from it.
Decide what fate awaits you. You’ll have to make an important decision that will open two very different paths for you, influence the plot’s progression, and your relationships.
Will the victory be sweet?
Tumblr media
✨ Vezriel, The Sovereign (m / f)
They have dark brown skin, long curly black hair, and black eyes with pale white flecks. Tall and of strong build, Vezriel cuts a robust but elegant figure, usually dressed in beautiful robes.
Vezriel seems a perfect ruler: they’re smart, calm, patient, know moderation, and always put demons’ well-being first. But you’re not so naive as to think this is their real face—many secrets lurk under the golden shell of the nobility. You never thought of meeting them in the past, but now spending some time with them is inevitable. Perhaps you will find out what lies beneath their mask?
✨ Osara / Osaron, The Heir (f / m)
They have warm brown skin, long wavy black hair, and silver, almost white eyes. O is tall and strong, their expression impassive most of the time, which makes them rather intimidating and unapproachable to some demons.
Vezriel’s only child and heir, O is their Chief Counselor, and they have a consistently good reputation. Their character reminds of their parent, though O is much more cold and reticent. Nothing seems to touch or shake their emotions, despite the known long list of ex-lovers. You don’t need their attention, but the circumstances have put you right under it. What will you make of this opportunity?
✨ Lazarus / Lazaris, the General (m / f)
They have beige skin, short/medium-length wavy blond hair, and golden eyes. Many small and big scars can be seen on their hands. L is tall and has a strong build. Despite their high station, they seem friendly and laid-back.
L rose from the bottom of the ladder and made a name for themselves, though judging by old rumors, their clean background wasn’t always so clean. They’re charismatic and popular but keep others at a distance—everyone except their friends… and you. L treats you especially well, but you’re not foolish enough to blindly play their game. What do they want from you?
✨ Ashmedai, the Royal Healer (f / m)
They have pale skin, long straight black hair, and bright red eyes. A large scar runs on the left side of their face, from their forehead along their eye and to their chin. Ash is tall and slender.
Ashmedai was sent to observe your condition after the incident and to help you with mind stability if needed. They performed their duties without showing any displeasure or impatience no matter how you behaved. Ash is secretive and reserved, and you guess their restrained temper is connected to the dark rumors surrounding them. Will they open up to you?
✨ Azarias / Azaria, the Royal Musician? (m / f)
They have pale skin, long white hair, and black eyes with narrow silver pupils. A tattoo of a snake with flowers curves around their neck. Az is tall and lean.
Ash’s younger sibling, Az somewhat resembles them in appearance, but their characters couldn’t be more different. Az is bold, humorous, and fickle. They know everyone—and everything about everyone—and enjoy a special favor from the Sovereign, which has allowed them to retain their place in the royal palace for many years. You’re concerned about their peculiar attention to you because there’s no reason for it—you two have never met before. Or… is there a reason after all?

some scattered disability and White London thoughts:
Schwab missed a hundred thousand opportunities for disability rep; this is a bleak, apocalyptic landscape where one of the prevalent currencies is blood, and both children and adults are frequently attacked for their power.
Sign language. Look. Most magicians need to speak to focus their power, though Schwab makes clear it's more a way to keep up concentration than a necessity (take Lila's tiger, tiger, burning bright. So I wanna see that taken to its logical conclusion: tongues removed because many. many people think they! are the source of power, or at least where immense magic will nest.
Therefore: A thriving culture of sign language, where everyone is at least semi-fluent.
Holland, watching Talya's hands trace the old stories in gorgeous, fluid arcs with her hands as her face takes on a million expressions. Later, finishing them beneath the blankets, fingers tracing words intohis skin in the dark.
Holland stands out as much because his Antariness has allowed him to avoid disability as for the power itself.
Way the fuck more prosthetics particularly prosthetic hands considering how so many people carve element-control runes directly on their skin. Take away your hands, and some enemies would think they could take away your ability to fight.
Lethally sharp hooks for hands, with the runes carved directly into the metal and the most ruthless fighters absolutely willing ready and able to gouge out your eyes with their prosthetics.
Consequently: prosthetic care. Eventually, you have to take your hand/hands off; moisturize the stumps etc. Who you choose to be that vulnerable with says a thousand things about your character. (and the moments when you don't particularly *choose* it but you need to anyway because you've had it on too long and the skin is blistering; infection in Makt would be deadly.
The irritations of amputations. I know from some other characters I've researched for: things like washing your hair with only one functioning hand: an absolute bitch.
Anemia. In AGOS, part of what Ojka says Osaron's powers does is "warm her blood". Everyone in that city must be A. constantly cold; and not cold like a coat can fix. Cold from poor circulation and generally "weak" blood. People who have an affinity with bone magic (Athos, Vortalis, Holland himself) would have a significant advantage because everyone else is moving just slightly sluggishly, always dragging at the weight of exhaustion. It's part of what would make Talya's dancing so fucking _impressive, that she moves like that even despite the headaches, dizziness, etc.
Holland as Antari: essentially a fucking human heated blanket to anyone who isn't afraid to be so close to y'know the extremely dangerous magician.
God, there's so. so much more, but my brain is swiss cheese. But I at least wanted to start the ball rolling, because I feel like this's a corner of fandom that's just _bursting with possibilities.

I have an inkling possession is going to make an appearance in the next two books. Specifically Kosika being possessed by Holland's supposed ghost.
Also the idea that she has his magic seems to be a lie to me, to keep her compliant with whatever comes next. If she was chosen that obviously means she was done a favor, so she's virtually indebted to him and White London, and she'll be obligated to follow, no matter what he asks of her. I feel like she's being manipulated, her belief in the Saint and the respect she has for him being weaponized against her.
That's why it seems to me that the apparition is just someone masquerading as the real Holland. And the piece of dialogue about bringing something back from Black London? I think she already did, just nothing solid.
And the mention of the pull the magic in the Inheritor has over Tesali, Osaron attempting to grab at people even when sealed away, makes me theorise Kosika might have pulled on that magic when she tried to grow the plants in the courtyard and consequently fell ill for a week. Some part of him might have latched onto her, and activated the moment she made contact with Black London. He is sealed away together with the magic Holland lost so maybe he cloaks himself in that? Pretends to be someone that he is not? Puppeteering what's left of Holland in this realm?
And rekindling the magic in Black London sounds like a trick.
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

A comment under something I wrote about Kell's childhood got me thinking about antari and how they are objectified. I also briefly touch on their boundaries and dynamics and parallels.
I want to believe that Kell's parents cared about his well being and that the only reason they surrendered him to the Maresh family was to protect him. Imagine if Kell had continued living with his biological parents. They were likely thieves on the run without a home and they probably lived on scraps. Once it would be known that Kell was antari, someone could've taken advantage of him, or worse. Someone could've attempted to kill him. Offering Kell to the king and queen would grant him protection, an education in magic. He wouldn't have to worry about eating and where to sleep. I don't think it was an easy choice for his parents, but they did it because they believed it would be for their son's good. They couldn't know that Kell would end up being dehumanized by his new "parents" and like a bird in a golden cage.
The main og antari and how their storylines reflect each other in different ways.
Holland is the representation of the life Kell would've probably had if his family wouldn't have surrendered him to the royals, and if he wasn't born in Red London. His brother and the woman he loved tried to end him and he had to murder them to survive. Then the Danes and then Osaron made him their pet by literally erasing his humanity by controlling him.
Lila's father sold her to pay a debt and he didn't care about her. But she didn't know she was antari, so her magic couldn't be exploited and this somehow was her luck. Lila could run away from her oppressors, and in theory, is what Kell and Holland both longed for. Freedom. (Side note: that's why Kell likes Lila so much but she also gets on his nerves - affectionately -. The things that come easily to her, are harder for him. And he gets a little irritated by this but I think she also inspires him to improve and believe more in himself.)
Lila is the only antari who wasn't objectified up to this point. She didn't let the black stone or others take control of her, unlike Kell and Holland. It isn't a question of power. This is more of a question of mindset/personality. Lila shares personality traits with Kell and Holland and so do they (and they're a trio of introverts). While the other two are still trusting and kind despite it all, Lila is selectively trusting and kind. She built strong walls around her to protect herself and this is probably why she could resist possession. Perhaps this is her strength. She is also vary and hardly lets people in. She has strong boundaries but she's is selective about them.
Having been treated as servants and not human beings, Kell and Holland do have boundaries but they waver. Kell tries hard to put boundaries but he sometimes loses the fight. Holland has his boundaries destroyed after he was possessed, so it's no wonder he doesn't know what boundaries are anymore. They knew that they needed to get away and could try to leave (they were powerful magicians, after all!) but at the same time, they didn't know how. Oftentimes, the person who lives in a toxic environment knows it's toxic but is unable to leave. Holland was teetered by an enchantment to the Danes and then to Osaron. Kell was bound by duty and by loyalty to Rhy, whom he didn't want to leave because he loved his brother. Rhy was the only reason for him to endure this treatment.
This is why, once again, when Lila appears in Kell's life, she is the catalyst for his growth and for his possibility to get away from the toxic environment he was in. And at the same time, Lila appearing in the story influences Holland's story too. And they also influence her personal growth, because Lila learns to trust people a little more. At the end of the series, their power come together to destroy the enemy, which is cool.
After seven years, things have changed a bit. Kell is free from his royal duties at the end of acol, but his magic is broken and he finds himself without purpose. I think of him as a broken vase that was fixed with a thread of silver just like Japanese do (but with gold) to embrace the philosophy that humans have flaws and they're not perfect.
Lila is more trusting and letting people in (albeit still selectively), and I think that these seven years weren't easy for her either. She was the last antari left (I don't think she counted Kosika because she was still a child and uhm, what did I say about Lila trusting strangers? Read that again lol). I think she felt a huge responsibility on her shoulders, especially because she didn't want to involve Kell in any of the things regarding antari and such (see, reason why she didn't tell him about Kosika either). She was also emotionally tested because of Kell. She was desperately looking for a way to help him but also tried not to show him how desperate she was because she didn't want to show her feelings so openly (vulnerability again).
Holland is haunting the narrative. If the ghost Kosika sees is the real Holland, because I have few doubts that he is the same Holland we know. He's doing to Kosika what was done to him, but in a softer way, because he quietly speaks to her and helps her, and only later she realizes that was the reason she knew how to use her powers. He is using Kosika to act as his vessel so she can finish what he started years before. There's an interesting parallel with Kosika and Tes and the antari but I need to reread Threads to analyze it better.
If you read until the end thank you! lmao and if you have questions please send because I like to talk about adsom

Precious to me : I am way to obsessed with this au! But as the living embodiment of magic Osaron is immortal. But are the antari going to become more like him like Osaron the more they learn magic or will they still age and die? Also how will Rhy react to Kell learning from Osaron will he be angry and betrayed or will he be supporting him?
Also will it be okay to make fan works like fanfiction from this idea?
Hi! Osaron as an oshoc is functionally immortal, but the Antari are still a separate kind of creature and do age and die- that said, in my headcanon they do have slightly extended lifespans if they’re healthy as they’re typically more resistant to injury. The Antari will definitely grow more powerful as they spend time with Osaron, but they will still always be mortal.
As for Rhy, there’s a lot of family drama surrounding why Kell disappeared. It definitely wasn’t his choice to do so, and when Rhy hears about exactly what happened… let’s just say the Antari aren’t necessarily the only ones switching sides.
For now I’m okay with fanworks provided I’m credited, but there is a canon plot line to this AU that hasn’t been revealed yet- a lot of lore is still under wraps for now. I haven’t posted some of the other parts I have written because they’re very old and I’ve also just been more into other fandoms than ADSOM recently, but since there’s interest in this AU I may post some of the other parts soon so everyone can have a better idea of what’s going on. I’ve never had fanworks of my stuff before so I can’t promise I’ll be comfortable with it forever, but for now I’m okay with people making content for it provided there’s credit. Thank you again for the ask!

Spoilers for Fragile Threads of Power!!!
I just finished reading and I have some thoughts and predictions about a certain character...
Major spoilers below!
Am I the only one who's not convinced that Kosika's Holland is, well, actually Holland?
When Holland dies at the end of ACOL, his hair is white and both his eyes are green.
Kosika's Holland has white hair, but still has the black Antari eye.
That makes sense if he's a figment of her imagination, because she wouldn't have known that his eye had changed, and that's how she would have pictured him. But if it were actually Holland from beyond the grave, he wouldn't have the black eye.
In ADSOM, if I remember correctly, Kell mentions that it would be easy to enter Black London, but likely impossible to leave, since the walls were designed to contain Black London, not to keep people out. Holland, I think, was only able to leave (in AGOS) because Osaron was lending him power. And yet, Kosika returns to White London without difficulty.
I think that Kosika did bring something back from Black London, and it's masquerading as Holland; adopting the appearance she would expect from her Saint, and manipulating her into rekindling the flame in Black London, which will instigate the main conflict for the remaining books in the series.

Now that I've finished The Fragile Threads of Power by V E Schwab, I can finally say this (SPOILERS BELOW THE CUT):
Reading all the interactions between Holland's... spirit? ghost? I honestly dk what it is... and Kosika made me completely suspicious of what Holland is/ who he is.
I really want it to actually be Holland... so badly... but something just bugs me. Sure, he knew about the ten days he spent in Black London and about Osaron... but something is fishy to me. I have a feeling he's just a figment created by Osaron (or another Oshoc) in Black London to coerce Kosika into opening the worlds... but he also actively criticises Osaron, something that the narcissist himself could not do.
Maybe I'm being overly suspicious. Knowing Schwab, they would not let Holland have a moment of rest even in death, so maybe it really is him.
Am happy to discuss this if anyone is interested :)
(P.S. I would definitely join the Holland cult /j)
