After more than a year of large-scale fairs, festivals and events being a no-go because of the coronavirus pandemic, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s actually the sun, in case you’ve forgotten what it looks like.

There are things to go and do this summer all over Southern California, from family favorites like the OC Fair and Pageant of the Masters to music festivals such as Hard Summer and BeachLife. While many of the events happening will be modified, and in many cases with smaller audiences than before the pandemic, there are still ways to get out and celebrate.

There’s one big caveat here: If we learned anything in the last year, it’s that plans can change fast. Be sure to check refund and cancellation policies before plunking down your cryptocurrency. And you will need to stay on top of COVID-19 precautions, which are also a moving target. Your best bet? Checking with the events’ websites and social media pages for the latest updates and pricing. Be advised that tickets for many events are required to be purchased in advance.

And even though events are being scheduled well into the fall, we’re capping our list as events through the end of September for now.

San Bernardino County Fair

The SBC Fair is back for three weekends, but you will need to purchase tickets online in advance. This year, the admission price gets you access to the entertainment and includes the carnival rides. You can also nosh on fair food and see livestock exhibits.

Home Grown Fun

The San Diego County Fair is scaling back for 2021 with a smaller event that has the spirit of the fair. Expect a Ferris wheel, carousel, food, agricultural-themed exhibits and more.

Palm Springs ShortFest

The annual festival of short films had more than 5,500 submissions. The schedule will be released in early June.

Festival season in Laguna Beach

This seaside enclave will again draw hordes of visitors as Laguna Beach’s three summer art festivals are back. The Festival of Arts will boast work by more than 100 artists, hands-on art demonstrations and live music. The Sawdust Art Festival spotlights the creations of Laguna Beach artists, with more than 200 locals represented. Laguna Art-A-Fair is a juried competition of more than 100 artists from around the world.

Pageant of the Masters

One of Southern California’s signature events returns with nightly displays of tableaux vivants, or living pictures, featuring volunteers in elaborate costumes and makeup posing to recreate classic works of art. This year’s theme is “Made in America: Trailblazing Artists and Their Stories” and works depicted will include John Trumbull’s portrait of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks,” as well other iconic paintings by Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt and Norman Rockwell. Pageant tickets include admission to the neighboring Laguna Beach Festival of Arts.

OC Fair

Cute baby animals, carnival rides and vats full of deep-fried wonderment — there’s nothing like a county fair. While the dates, hours and prices will be familiar to veteran fair-goers, organizers plan to have capacity limits, fewer rides and booths and a new layout of the fairgrounds to avoid crowding. Admission tickets must be purchased in advance online. The 2021 Toyota Concert Series will present shows at Pacific Amphitheatre most nights of the fair. Concert tickets are sold separately but include fair admission.

Hard Summer Music Festival

Insomniac’s big EDM/hip-hop crossover festival moves from Fontana to San Bernardino this year with artists including Future, 2 Chainz and Dillon Francis. Note that it’s open to guests 18 and older only.

Uptown Jazz Festival

The 10th annual event went virtual in 2020, but in 2019 attracted nearly 10,000 jazz fans. The city announced in May that the event would return in August, but lineup information has not yet been revealed.

Beyond Wonderland

Insomniac’s massive EDM fest announced in April that it was moving from June to August. The lineup includes Tiesto, Kayzo, Dillon Francis and more. Attendees must be at least 18.

The Orange International Street Fair draws hundreds of thousands to downtown Orange for the three-day event.

Orange International Street Fair

It’s simply not Labor Day weekend in SoCal without this massive food and beverage festival, which began as a celebration of Orange’s centennial in 1973 and grew into a sprawling event attracting half a million visitors. Booths run by nonprofits will offer a vast array of food items, from egg rolls and gyros to cheesesteaks and brats, plus craft beer and wine. The 3-day event will also have arts and crafts booths, kids’ activities and continuous live entertainment.

Same Same But Different

This year’s festival will feature Big Gigantic, STS9 and J. Worra and is going bigger with its production, with larger stages and LED screens and lasers. There will be limited attendance and guests will have to either be vaccinated or have a negative COVID-19 test before entering.

BeachLife Festival

The event’s second edition has moved from May to September and will include sets from Jane’s Addiction, Counting Crows, Ziggy Marley & Stephen Marley performing the music of their father Bob Marley, Fitz and the Tantrums, Cage the Elephant and more. This year will mark the debut of the Speakeasy stage, curated by Pennywise’s Jim Lindberg and celebrated South Bay chef David LeFevre will curate the chef lineup for the stage-side pop-up restauramt.

God’s House of Hip Hop 20/20 Summer Fest

This Christian hip-hop, Latin Christian hip-hop and gospel hip-hop festival will finally make its debut after having to cancel its inaugural plans in 2020. Performers include Alex Zurdo, Derek Minor, Flame, WHATUPRG, Angie Rose, Canton Jones, Manny Montes and more.

Vans U.S. Open of Surfing

Podcast Movement 2017 Refrelections

I'm back from podcast movement, and I had a blast. I also have insights from one of the hardest assignments I've done in a long time.

My Impression of Podcast Movement 2017

Nothing cooler than being picked up at that airport by fellow podcasters Marcus Couch from WordPress Plugins A to Z. We haven't seen each other face to face in about 10 years. We cranked some cool metal on the way to the Marriot and it was like old times.

Then I get the then Marriot and I get to meet my co-host Jim Collison from the Average Guy network, and I go over to his table and there sits the one and only Steve Stewart and Mike Dell. So for me, the Summar Camp aspect of Podcast Movement is in full effect.

The coolest line I heard all week was relayed by Paul Colligan (another person' I've known for 10+ years) and it came from a Dan Klass session. Dan (who is a former comedian) shared how often at comedy clubs you will have multiple comedians perform in an evening - and yet they all use the same microphone. The point? It's not about the tech.

I roomed with Erik K Johnson from podcasttalentcoach.com, and he had stated that it would be awesome if he could meet a web developer who needed help with his podcast, as he was a podcast consultant who needed help with his website. I get into the elevator, introduce myself to everyone in the elevator and it turns out that one of the people is a web designer thinking of starting a podcast. When we get out of the elevator, on of the first people who see is Erik. I felt like I was in a Christmas movie and it was going to start to snow.

I saw Harry Durran from Podcast Junkies and Dr. Ryan Gray who has given up his practice to do podcasting full time and Harry introduces me to Natalie Jennings who happens to be taking head shots at a reasonable price. She shows me a few samples of people, and I'm hooked. I can't wait to see how they turn out. The few peaks I saw of what she did was amazing. See her at http://www.nataliechampajennings.com/

I found out in Paul Colligan's session that if you are in Google Play Music, you are also on the Google Home portable audio speaker.

I also know of a cool double secret project that is going to make recording double-enders via a browser very cool.

I was on a panel with Ray Ortega, Daniel J. Lewis, and Addy Saucedo on what is inside an RSS. This was an insanely nerdy topic, but due to the recent Apple announcements we had some interested parties and I thought we pulled it off well. The bonus is I got to hang out with some cool friends.

The Coolest Thing I Saw At Podcast Movement 2017

While there were tons of great sessions at PM17, as a vendor (I work for Libsyn.com - use the coupon code sopfree to get a free month) I don't get to attend any sessions. I did see something that was way cool. I met Alissa Daire of the Maximize Your Strengths show. I see her the first night, and she is in a group of people and we get talking about Strengths Finder, and she becomes a ping pong ball bouncing off the ceiling with energy. She's super nice, and it was great to catch up with her as I had met her last year. The next night, I'm standing at the Luau event, and here she comes. She explains how "I'm done." She's tired (as many people are), and she is considerably less energetic. Pat Flynn walks over, he's very witty and a super nice guy. Then the subject changes to strengths finder results, and it was like watching a time release video of a flower blooming. Her energy came back, her smile came back, her body language completely changed. It was amazing to watch.

I saw this a few more times. It's late, and people have had a few adult beverages, then I ask them about their show, and BOOM, the body language picks up, the eyes are open a bit wider, the voice is a little louder.

Later, Paris from Gamertag Radio got star struck when Cara Santa Maria from the Skeptics Guide to the Universe walks by. I offered to go bring her over. He got shy, so I did my best Steve Austin (the six million dollar man, not the wrestler) imitation across the showroom floor. I had no idea she was an Emmy Award winning journalist. I bring her over and embarrass Paris. Danny Peña is there, Jim Collison is there, and the minute Paris explained that he really did listen to her show the body language changed. For me, I think of it as being in your "first impression" mode and then finding out that you're among family.

For the Best Content - Put a Time Frame On it

I spoke about how I got lucky to be able to induct Dan Klass from the Bitterest Pill into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame. The presentation should last three minutes. I had hoped that three minutes would be longer than I thought. I wrote out my first draft. It had some bits about history and podcasting in 2005. It had examples of how the show made me feel. I made a joke about how the more I talk about his show, the more I sound like a stalker. I listed his accomplishments.

I started the stopwatch and went into the presentation, about half what through I glanced at my phone and I was already at 5 and a half minutes. Oh boy......

What Was the Purpose of This Presentation?

I had to go back and ask myself, what was the purpose of this presentation? The purpose was for the person sitting in row 7 who had been podcasting since 2015 and had no idea who Dan Klass was. It wasn't about me. It wasn't about being funny. I was about answering the question, "Why is Dan Klass in the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame." For me, this was a big opportunity, on a big stage, and I didn't want to mess it up for myself, or Dan. It was time to edit.

Anything about me went out the door. The history lesson of iriver portable players and synchronization cables went up in smoke. Most of the stories I had about Dan might not go over if you didn't listen to his show.

Only the things that HAD to be said would stay.

I listed his accomplishments. I thought of the funniest thing I had heard on his show (he referred to his two-year-old daughter as Princess Tirade for quite some time), and the most memorable episode (of ALL podcasting) is episode 102 Mass Murder where he talks about what it's like when your Uncle is murdered, and you're walking past TV cameras escorting your mother to the funeral. It's at the end, I highly suggest you listen to it.

I had pointed out that Dan was one of the first to try premium podcasting (this was YEARS before Patreon) and it didn't work well. That was negative, so I just pointed out that he was a pioneer and not afraid to try new things.

I HAD TO POINT OUT, that Dan had been sharing stories a DECADE before Serial was on the scene. Dan was creating engaging stories in a box in his garage, and he did it without a team of 19 people. That had to stay.

To make it entertaining, I thought of throwing in some old Baptist preacher tricks of getting people to repeat words. This came to me in the shower. It would make me stand out, but I was deeply worried about being too entertaining (again, this was all about Dan). Looking back, that was a dumb thought (you're not going to outshine Dan Klass).

Just Because There Are No Time Limits in Podcasting Doesn't Mean There Shouldn't Be

To fine tune my presentation I had to:

Identify my audience

Identify the purpose

Make it entertaining

I know some of us want to record it and publish it. I truly, always believe a podcast can benefit from editing. This is especially true if you are doing interviews.

Devin from the Big Picture Retirement podcast shares how he didn't' want to start a podcast but sure is glad he did. He just released episode 34, and his co-host has already billed $10,000, and Devin has billed $6,000 and has a client who will bring in $20,000. I bet you might think, they have a huge audience, right? Nope, according to Devin, they are averaging 534 downloads an episode.

White Cube

White Cube is a contemporary art gallery owned by Jay Jopling with two permanent branches in London: Mason's Yard in central London and Bermondsey in South East London as well as one in Victoria City, Hong Kong Island. White Cube Bermondsey opened in October 2011 and is the largest of all the gallery's sites. The 'South Galleries' provide the principal display area for White Cube's expanding programme of exhibitions and three smaller galleries, known collectively as the 'North Galleries', are used for an innovative series of shows. In addition, at the centre of the building, a top-lit, 81m² gallery entitled '9 x 9 x 9', is used for special projects or for the display of a single artwork or installation. Since its inception, the building has hosted a variety of important exhibitions such as the first UK showing of work by American artist Theaster Gates, a comprehensive retrospective of prints by Chuck Close and the largest presentation of Anselm Kiefer work's ever staged in London. To accompany these exhibitions, an education programme and an ongoing series of artists films, feature films and lectures takes place in the purpose-built 60 seat auditorium. White Cube Mason’s Yard houses two galleries that provide a total of 1110m² (11,900 sq ft) of exhibition space, comprising of a ground floor gallery on street level and a double-height, naturally-lit basement gallery. Used for White Cube's expanding programme of exhibitions, White Cube Mason's Yard has hosted a wide range of exhibitions by international artists including Andreas Gursky, Georg Baselitz, Jeff Wall, Anselm Kiefer, Robert Irwin and Miroslaw Balka. The gallery opened with an inaugural exhibition by Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco.

The galleries artists include; Franz Ackermann, Etel Adnan, Darren Almond, Ellen Altfest, Michael Armitage, Miroslaw Balka, Georg Baselitz, Larry Bell, Chuck Close, Tracey Emin, Katharina Fritsch, Theaster Gates, Gilbert & George, Antony Gormley, Andreas Gursky, David Hammons, Mona Hatoum, He Xiangyu, Damien Hirst, Robert Irwin, Runa Islam, Sergej Jensen, Anselm Kiefer, Imi Knoebel, Rachel Kneebone, Elad Lassry, Liza Lou, Jac Leirner. Liu Wei, Ibrahim Mahama, Christian Marclay, Josiah McElheny, Julie Mehretu, Beatriz Milhazes, Harland Miller, Sarah Morris, Gabriel Orozco, Damián Ortega, Virginia Overton, Eddie Peake, Magnus Plessen, Jessica Rankin, Doris Salcedo, Raqib Shaw, Haim Steinbach, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Fred Tomaselli, Jeff Wall and Cerith Wyn Evans.

White Cube hold events throughout the year, which include; artist talks, previews, exhibitions, book launches, film screenings and performances. They also have a channel which features videos of discussions and talks with professionals in the industry, all within different locations and categorised as such; In The Auditorium - one to one discussions about certain topics, In The Museum - installations, In The Gallery: Current - installations, Beyond The White Cube - outside artistic ventures, In The Studio - artist makings and processes in the studio and In The Gallery; Past - installations / exhibitions. I haven't seen this type of channel before on a smaller gallery site (not public i.e - Tate), and this is an interesting addition to the gallery, as it gives context to the exhibitions and the world that the gallery is interested and involved in, it gives the viewers more knowledge and insight into this industry. I think this is a good idea to get viewers more engaged with the artists, the processes, the exhibitions and the gallery as a company. I think creating more interactive aspects such as interviews whether it be by video or writing could be a good way to get people more interested in our company as well as keeping viewers interested.

When reading an article about the owner of White Cube, Jay Jopling, I found out more information about the owner and the gallery that has given me a better insight into how Jay became a successful business man, which inspires me to be a successful business woman. I picked out key information for the article that inspired me.

Jay Jopling, the founder of London's White Cube gallery empire, launched its third outpost in the capital to coincide with the Frieze art fair. - I then researched Frieze Art Fair, which is an international contemporary art fair that takes place every October in London's Regent's Park. The fair features more than 160 of the world’s leading galleries in which customers can view and buy art from over 1,000 present day leading artists, and experience the fair’s critically acclaimed Frieze Projects and Talks programmes. It see’s thousands of the world's wealthiest collectors flock to London over the next three days. This is interesting to know as this is something myself and Sam can aspire to become apart of, as well as attend to gain further insight into the gallery world and most importantly, our competitors.

The article went on to state that one London-based art collector said that some poorer galleries are currently "walking on eggshells" because of the financial downturn. Yet Jopling's mixture of charm, savvy and bullish behaviour will make him this week's most surefire victor. - interesting skills to know about, makes me think about how personality can affect how you succeed - mine and Sams personality combined I believe is strong, determined, friendly and charming - could get us far.

"Jay told me a long time ago that if he couldn't be the best at what he does he wasn't interested," says White Cube's exhibitions director Tim Marlow. "The Bermondsey gallery is an affirmation of that. He wants a complex of galleries that will allow him to do the best shows with the best possible artists.” - long term goal for myself, I want to succeed in this industry, and as a determined person, I won’t give up easily - need to be strong in this industry and I think I have this personality / determination to go along with work experience that I will gain more of in the future.

Inside the White Cube: Ideologies of the Gallery Space, which emphasised that the blank walls of modern galleries had become "the archetypal image of 20th-century art". According to Melanie Gerlis, art market editor of The Art Newspaper, Jopling's "business-like" approach appealed to bankers with loose wallets "who wanted to put art on bare walls". "He's astute, he runs galleries like a business, not a cottage industry," she says. - Although I want to build a community and a space for all to enjoy, reading this makes me realise that I must not lose focus in terms of making money to keep the company afloat and to be able to do certain events and represent photographers.
