watching the entirety of jrwi: riptide again. here's some important things from the first few episodes that I feel we forgot (<110 mentions too though)

Jay

Had night terrors similar to those of Kubakinta's curse in episode 5, and they eventually start returning even after Loffinlot's curse is lifted ○ All of them were about her family and/or the navy ○ I simply think people leave her out of the nightmare stuff and she deserves it. Hurt her more, please (he said, lovingly)

was actually very upset at having to use her medal to get a Loffinlot rebellion to shut up ○ This could be because she didn't want them to guess she was a spy, but I choose to believe it's because she felt guilty

"If you're gonna be sailing with someone, you should have a good relationship with them. [nervous chuckle]." She says, while asking him for information about the Black Rose Pirates (ep. 10)

Said "thank god they didn't find me" after a nightmare about the navy attacking. Even when she was supposedly a spy, who one day would have to return to the navy ○ Very unclear if she was scared of her dad, or if it's because she was a secret spy so the navy would've just killed her

Rewatching, she was suspiciously into the plundering and gold and stuff. Like that was real sus. It doesn't fit her current character much

The only one among them who's gambled before

Chip

The entire thing literally starts off with Bizly holding a lit match

Called Gillion "Gill" and Jay "Sureshot" from an early stage

Was SO much more of a bastard. Lied to Gill constantly, didn't care about anything but the money, etc.

Had aggressive hand tremors alongside Jay's night terrors ○ Gill cures it with lay on hands

When he gets drunk married, they talk extensively about how he'd be released when he's dead. Welp.

They did actually break up and it was fine and they were still friends. They parted on good terms

Is really fucking good at chess ○ Beat Earl twice and Jay once. Jay had a point of exhaustion after a nightmare but Earl had no excuse ○ Lost to Gillion though, but only cause of prophetic screwup ○ This kid is smarter than he lets on, y'all

Was the first one to have a backstory dump while Jay is asking him about the Black Rose Pirates, yet still we know jack shit about his life before them other than "orphan"

Gill

Charlie has referred to Gillion with 'they' many times. I can pull receipts.

When describing Gill, Charlie said: "He's more.. elven, if you had to make a comparison. 'Cause I don't wanna be a fish guy". Oh, honey.

Smote a bald person by using his hair as a whip (ep. 4)

Was given anxiety and self-doubt alongside jay's night terrors and chip's tremors ○ "What do you want?" "I want the feeling of satisfaction I've been chasing my whole life." ○ This was episode FIVE.

First mention of the prophecy and how Gillion wasn't their ideal student is ep. 7, after he divine smites + prophetic screwups and deals like 60 damage to some beetles ○ Chip spends the next 30 seconds in gay awe

He refers to the crescent moon Niklaus tattoo as "my zodiac" (probably a bit) ○ It's not a lil basic white girl moon this thing is the entire size of his forearm

Gill had never heard about the Black Sea - it's unclear if the Undersea just don't know, or if that's just how sheltered he was (ep. 10)

Biz: "What would Gillion do. If he just had no goal - was just sitting there." "Gillion always has a goal." "Would his goal ever be to just.. Sit there?" "Absolutely not." ○ Later, Chip expresses that he doesn't know what Gillion likes. What he would want out of winning a bet. Gillion doesn't have an answer

Other

Apple, in a couple of early battles, acted like Gill's familiar (see: ep. 7)

They also pecked at his Niklaus tramp stamp and looked all confused at the idea of eating seeds

The specific crescent of the moon in the Niklaus tattoo is known as a symbol of "corruption" (ep. 9) and its antonym is the sun, for "life", similar to the yin and yang ○ Interesting to consider after what the tree said in 110 <_<

Pretzel has a masters degree in couple's therapy (ep. 10)

The Albatross/Millennium Chipper was described as the colour of rosewood or mahogany

Captain Lizzie's first introduction was a wanted poster, and Chip wanted to turn her in for the prize, then decided to try learn from her instead

Chip/Bizly called Old Man Earl "Erol" for a loooong time ○ Maybe it's an accent thing but I have an uncle called Erol and so this stands out to me

Bebop Thoughtz, part five

If you don't want Cowboy Bebop spoilers, stick with part one.

I just finished rewatching the cartoon. I thought I'd make a list of things the anime does better, and things the live-action version does better.

Things the anime does better:

humor - The humor of the anime version largely comes from visual gags like people having animals on their heads. (They go back to this well three times, and it works every time.) The humor in the live-action version mostly comes from Spike's dry wit and Faye's use of oddly childish obscenity, which largely fell flat for me.

characters - The characters of the cartoon manage to be charming, at least at times, despite their obvious flaws. For example, Faye reveals herself to be pretty amoral (stealing from Spike and Jet, lying/breaking promises to Ed), and yet her tragic backstory makes her compelling and somewhat sympathetic in my view.

racism/sexism/homophobia/transphobia - The caricatures of Native Americans, Black people, and Latinos in the anime are wildly racist. I personally think the episode Mushroom Samba takes the cake for racism, but Heavy Metal Queen is a close second. Jet and Spike are constantly talking trash about women. (Spike also hates children and dogs. This is our hero!) The homophobia and transphobia mostly comes out in Gren's two-episode story arc, which I'll get into later.

fatalism - The ending of the series is BLEAK. [Major spoilers coming] Ed and Ein leave the crew, possibly to reunite with Ed's dad who can't seem to remember her name, gender, or the fact that he left her in an orphanage. Faye leaves in search of her childhood home, finds it destroyed, and returns to the Bebop. Spike basically commits suicide by storming the HQ of his enemies, after watching the alleged love of his life die. I say alleged because their love story is not developed at all in the anime.

Things the live action does better:

make sense - The episodes of the live-action show all have fairly linear, easy-to-follow storylines, whereas some of the anime episodes feel more like fever dreams.

provide an overarching plot that tied the episodes together - Some of the anime episodes feels like the creators came up with an idea for a villain, and based the whole episode around that, rather than trying to build a coherent narrative. I like how, in the live-action version, Spike and Vicious' relationship is the through-line, and each development brings us closer to their final confrontation. Knowing that we are always moving forward, to the resolution of the overall conflict, gives you something to hold on and a reason to pay attention.

family dynamics - Though I found the live-action versions of the characters charmless, we like them because they are willing to risk their lives for each other. Each has lost a family. Spike is an orphan. Faye was frozen, lost her memory, and the closest thing she has to a family is a woman who scammed her into believing she was Faye's mom. Jet is divorced or separated from his wife, and his daughter, who he has minimal contact with, now calls one Jet's cop ex-buddies "daddy." The members of the Bebop represent a chosen family, and even though they are often not honest or kind with each other, they always seem to show up for each other when most needed. What the live action lacks in charming characters, it makes up for in heartwarming vibes.

develop the backstory for Spike and Vicious' relationship - Episode 9 is one of my favorite eps, and it's one of the ones that strays the most from the source material. This ep is pure backstory and it gives us a reason to care about Spike, Vicious, Julia and their weird love triangle, which was barely perceptible in the anime. It also tries to humanize Vicious by giving him an abusive father, but... I'm not sure that justifies his impulsiveness or bloodlust.

bigger roles for Ana/Annie and Gren - These are extremely minor characters in the original who get much better developed in the live action. In the anime, Annie owns a... porn store? Liquor store? Corner store? Unclear. Her and Spike clearly have an affinity for each other, but we only really see her once before she gets murdered. In the live-action version, Ana is a powerful Black disabled woman: a jazz club owner, a spy of sorts, a liaison between rival parties within The Syndicate. In the original, Gren is a man who grew breasts due to a hormone imbalance. In the live action, Gren is trans femme without breasts, and also Ana's right hand in running the club and keeping the troublemakers at bay. Ana and Gren were my favorite characters, and least to have to least-compromised moral compasses of all the characters. I loved Tamara Tunie as Ana. She and Spike have a cute flirtation going, but I never understood, in either version, why this character was so loyal to Spike.

surprise betrayal - One of the major plot points of the live-action version is Vicious' scheme to overthrow the Elders. In the anime, the scenes of the actual betrayal are pretty confusing, and involve, I believe, an exploding bird? In the live-action version, Vicious overthrows the Elders in a surprise twist that really got me, so I don't want to spoil it for you.

give women agency - In the anime, no one really cares what Julia wants. She's just "the girl," a prize to be won by either the "hero" or the villain. In the live-action version, she claims her power in a way that I, as a viewer, did not at all see coming. She's a much more well-developed character: smart and manipulative.

The humor of the original and and charm of its characters carried it a long way. Perhaps remakes are destined to disappoint, but this one did some cool things with casting, storylines, and of course, fight scenes. The fact that John Cho was almost 50 when he filmed them makes it all the more impressive.

please this series is so funny and entertaining and just iconic. the dialogue is SOOOO quotable and the songs are so funny and amazing!!!!!!!!!! (i mean hello it's alan menken!!!!!)

it's got badass ladies, a pathetic little meow meow king, A DRAGON (i super believe in tad cooper <333), an army of gays, pirates who are the lords of the sea (except for the part with the sea), a knight in shinging armour who is some over-muscled chauvinistic self-indulgent egotistic stingy prissy narcisissy jackass in a caaaaaaan, and so much more

this is one of the 3 series that i've rated as a 10/10 on mydramalist, so i HAD to include it and well. it's just. i don't know how to put it into words

this series and the characters just feel so real. i like how every single character has their own baggage to carry and how they all come together and influence each other. and i really like that this isn't your standard fluffy romance story. actually, one of my favorite things in this series is how the break-up between alan and wen is a major plot line. and i like how messy it all is, how long it takes them to actually draw the line. again, it just feels so real.

not to mention there's a deaf character!!!! please heart and li ming were just so wholesome 🥺🥺🥺 and li ming's relationship with his uncle was just so endearing

the brightest star in the sky:

during the pandemic my mom came to me and said "you need to watch this series. the male lead reminds me so much of your brother". i watched it with her. she was right. the male lead is exactly like my little brother. to the point where there was this one scene where the male lead was criticizing the female lead's outfit and my mom and i laughed and went "[brother] would totally say this too" and only a few days later my brother and i had a conversation about clothing over lunch and my brother said almost exactly the same thing as the male lead in that one scene and i looked at my mom in surprise and went "did you tell him about that scene????" as my mom was cracking up and shaking her head that no, she had not.

although, when i say the male lead is exactly like my brother, that's a lie. in fact, he's a mix of both my brother and an old friend of ours who was always like a second little brother to me (the two of them actually had similar personalities when they were teens)

and the female lead reminds me of a female friend that was also in the friend group with us (and who is one of my brother's best friends)

in fact, the dynamic between the male lead and the female lead reminds me very much of the dynamic between my brother and said female friend

all in all, the main characters are just very familiar to me and remind me of people i adore and that's why this series has a special place in my heart. (even if i constantly want to punch zheng boxu. sibling love <3)

theory of love:

ok i know this is kind of a controversial one, bc people seem to either love it or hate it BUT. just know that this series and especially the khaithird plot was made for me, and me personally <3

this series came to me at exactly the right time. it was like a mirror to my own life at the time and brought a lot of catharthis. i was going through a "break-up" with my own personal irl-khai back then and this series helped me deal with that, helped me get over him, and reconfirmed to me over and over again that i had taken the right decisions.

theory of love is also the thai drama that i've seen the most amount of times (i've watched the khaithird plot 27x that i've counted as of july 2nd, 2023) (though by now bbs is a close second with 22 full watches that i've counted as of july 2nd, 2023 and it might surpass theory of love at some point now that my personal irl-khai is no longer relevant in my life in any way. you know what that is!! growth!!!! the day bbs surpasses tol is the day i really, truly AM well and over my irl-khai)

you're beautiful:

ok. ok. hear me out. this is a kdrama from 2009, right?? but i didn't watch it until november 2021 where i'd had quite a day and in the evening was super exhausted and just wanted a zero-braincell show to watch and this happened to be on netflix and looked like the perfect thing for my state

little did i know it was gonna be a million-braincell show for me.

basically, i ended up being really entertained by it, saw that there were remakes, decided to check those out too and well. it got my little actor brain going. i started analyzing the acting (comparing esp the og korean version with the taiwanese remake) and it turned into this whole thing where i wrote pages and pages of notes in a google doc. i learned a lot through that and luckily we had camera acting classes at drama school during that period, so it was perfect timing. i suddenly understood so many things and what an effect it can have on the viewer if you do (or don't do) something a certain way

(oh and then a year later i inflicted this series on a uni friend of mine and it turned into this whole acting analysis project after i'd mentioned about something about acting and went "wait, i have THE perfect example for what i mean where you can see it first-hand." we had a great time and then binged the entire series during semester break. i'm planning on getting her into thai ql too, but unfortunately we're both super busy and don't really have time to watch series together)

honorary mentions:

ever night: i watched only the first season, though. and it's been a while since i saw it (3 years ago during lockdown) and so i don't remember the plot very well but... beautiful cinematography. loveable characters. fantastic acting. also the special effects when the main character did those "spells" (forgot what it was called) looked so cool??????

why r u: that was my first thai bl. the one that pulled me into the world of thai drama. considering how i'm mostly a thai drama blog now and the rebranding started with this series i couldn't not mention it, could i

the fosters: i was obsessed with this back in 2015. i stopped watching it shortly before the jonnor break-up bc i was busy at the time and when i saw the spoilers about the break-up i couldn't be bothered to catch up. but yeah, i was really into it for a while as well

andi mack: i've made multiple gifsets of that show. i don't gif a lot so yeah. considering that i bothered to sit down and make gifs for this, i think andi mack deserves an honorary mention. i wasn't suuper obsessed with it but i did quite like watching it

merlin (bbc): it's just very entertaining ok and the characters are fun to watch and have fun dynamics

July 12: Orphan Black 5x10

And so I have finished Orphan Black. The final episode was about what I expected: it finished up the cliffhanger, killed off the last of the bad guys, and established what everyone was up to afterwards, ending on a generally happy ending.

By this time, and not only because I took a few weeks’ break between ep 9 and this one, I don’t really care about any of the antagonists anymore. Also, while I knew they’d spend a while on Helena giving birth (she’s only been pregnant for 3 seasons lol), I wasn’t really so into watching that, so I was happy when all that was done. (I did like that Art was there with her and Sarah though.)

Stuff I liked from the ‘epilogue’ portion:

That everything wasn’t automatically perfect, and we do see Sarah struggling both with S’s death and with establishing a ‘normal’ life for herself and her daughter for, really, the first time.

Helena living in the Hendrix’s...garage I guess?? and that awesome yard space with lights that was between the two houses.

I knew she named her kids Arthur and Donnie and I don’t usually like that naming-after-another-character thing but in this case I kinda did? Mostly because of the line “it’s time you take the names of real men.” Also, Arthur and Donnie earned it.

That all of the characters got their little mentions or appearances at the baby showers, including people like Colin, Adele, Charlotte, etc. (Is Charlotte Art’s now???)

That the clones had a little talk about motherhood and their anxieties about it because even though that doesn’t speak to me personally, fertility and parenthood has been such a big part of the show, it was fitting.

The outfits, especially Cosima’s dress.

Alison and Donnie’s final scene. Where are they the best couple??

Stuff I didn’t like so much:

I’m never really a fan of ‘the whole show/book/movie was actually written by one of the characters’ trope. It was wild when I read The Outsiders in the 6th grade. I’m past it now.

Cosima and Delphine still together. I know! I know! Obviously they were going to be but ughhhh.

NO CAL. Technically he and Sarah didn’t really break up so where is he??? My two other Valid Couples were in the finale (Felix/Colin and Donnie/Alison) and it was so close to a three-for-three.

I get why Rachel’s story ended the way it did and it probably would have stretched credulity even more than some of the Supremely Happy Ending stuff did to have her join Clone Club at literally the eleventh-and-a-half hour, but I’m still bummed out that she just... disappeared into the ether at the point where I feel like she could at least START to bond with her sisters. There are so many kids in this family. She wants to be a mom. She’s finally earned her redemption and her place in the family. Maybe if she, like, just stopped in or something? I was never a Rachel fan but I still kind of wanted that for her.

Overall, though, everything was tied up very well. Perhaps too well? But at the same time, I respect it for not going grmdark and tragic at the end. It really said: these characters earned 15 minutes of a cute little garden party together, and you know what? They did.

(It turns out it's very hard to keep up on TV when you're watching things in a group of three and you're all working full-time, studying full-time, or both, on top of doing all the other life things. Currently obsessed with?

The Wheel of Time. Just finished season two of the show, which really took things to another level over season one, and read through the first two books.

Mitski. I adore her as an artist and I just barely snagged some absurdly hard-to-purchase tickets to see her in March performing the new album, so I'm over the moon about that.

Mike Flanagan horror shows. 'Tis the season.

Life. I'm just loving building connections with people and experiencing things and having sensations and a body and being in places at times. Cool stuff!

Mmm, tropes: rich boy/poor girl, forbidden love, slow burn, whump/angst. I’m sort of a weirdo bc I LOVE epic fantasies and period dramas that have tons of characters, but I also adore soapy dramas with rich people and lots of drama and secrets. Thriller/suspense shows with some romance are good too, though if the suspense is good enough romance isn’t essential.

Squicks: I don’t like anything too dark or depressing, or sad endings (I don’t mind ambiguous endings).

TURKISH

Siyah Beyaz Ask (Black and White Love) - our heroine is a surgeon, our hero is a mob hitman. She sees something she shouldn’t have, and her only choices are to marry him or get shot. Secrets galore, awesome chemistry, etc etc and shockingly a happy ending.

Gunesi Beklerken (Waiting for the Sun) - Turkey does Hana Yori Dango (sort of, it veers off into its own thing soon enough.) Our poor but plucky transfer students attracts the ire of the biggest wealthiest bad boy in school. He wants revenge but then falls for her, angst ensues.

Kara Para Ask - daughter of mobster and a cop solve an evil conspiracy and fall in looooooooove!

Cesur ve Guzel - he’s a sexy lumberjack looking type, she’s the daughter of his enemy. Mmmm.

Marasli (Man from Maras) - this one is currently airing so not sure how it ends but if you like bodyguard romance!

CHINESE

The Story of Minglan - slow burn, large cast, intricate period narrative, very Elizabeth Gaskell does period drama

The Longest Day in Chang’an - barely any romance but gorgeous and suspensy where our protagonists have 24 hours to ensure the Tang capital doesn’t get set on fire.

The Rebel Princess - a royal princess is forced to marry a general from humble background. I was obsessed with this earlier.

Three Lives Three Worlds Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (also known as Eternal Love - not to be confused with a time travel bit of fluff with same name) - in some ways it jumpstarted the recent fantasy romance craze. Our heroine is goddess, our hero is the grandson of the Heavenly Emperor. So much angst and love and I adore that drama so much! It starts slow - the first 9 eps are blah. But it’s worth it!

Ever Night 1 - two orphans against the world, that one has gorgeous cinematography and fights and I love both the protagonists and their slow burn. SO GOOD!

Helllu! I see you've been watching lots of chinese/korean dramas. Can you rec your favs?

 Hello!! Of course I can n.n (sorry it took so long to answer, I kept making changes to this aha). I’ve decided to list my current top 3 favourites, because apparently I’ve watched a lot.

Okay guys, here goes.

Chinese dramas:

So lately the past year or so of my life has been consumed by cdrams (and recently kdramas by extension), but here are some of my faves that I’ve watched.

The Untamed

Anyone who follows my blog knows my crazy obsession with this amazing show. It’s based off of a novel called the Grandmaster of demonic cultivation (has an anime with the same name– s2 is slowly being released right now). The story takes place in a world ruled by the evil Wen Sect. Wei Ying and Lan Zhan cross paths and become good friends (hardcore bromance). Wei Ying tries to save innocent Wen from death, and in the end, he lost almost everything. After going missing for 16 years, the pair find each other again and try to find the real villain.

It’s full of action, mystery, adventure, heart ache, supernatural ghouls, longing, whumping, and an amazingly attractive cast that should honestly be illegal. If you’re looking for a show with lots of emotional pain that will swallow you whole, then you’re in the right place. 

P/s. the 2 mains sing their love song which makes it that much more beautiful/painful.

Ps/s. IT ALSO JUST GOT PUT ONTO NETFLIX GUYS. No excuses not to binge it, and when you do, dm me so we can fangirl together.

Guardian

Another drama based off of a novel, with gay bros, longing, and adventure. Shen Wei is an immortal (kind of), and currently a university professor that has been waiting centuries for his lover/friend (Yunlan) to repay him for what he gave Shen Wei and will do anything for him. Zhao Yunlan is the head of the SID, a department that solves mysteries and crimes with supernatural origins. Together they help save others, solve mysteries, and save the world from Shen Wei’s evil twin brother. 

 All I can say about this one is that if you haven’t seen it, you’re seriously missing out (but warning, the cgi is horrible lmao). It was also super amazing seeing Zhu Yilong in a main role like this. The king of micro-expression seriously doesn’t let us down. 

Legend of Fuyao

This show had consumed my soul for about a full month and a half until I finished it. When I finished watching, it left me sad that it was over. Got to be honest, the ending is still a bit confusing, but is still worth the watch. This is an epic love story about Fuyao, an orphan looking for adventure, but gets caught in a fight between kingdoms and destiny. Along the way, she meets the Crown Prince and they fall in love, but destiny has their fates already decided. They are on the opposite sides of good and evil and need to decide whether one lives and the other dies. It’s got amazing fight scenes and a really attractive male lead (his first lead in a show I believe). Super amazing acting, because let’s be real, any show with Yang Mi is an automatically good show. She’s just too amazing.

Other honourable mentions: Granting you a dreamlike life, Eternal Love, Untouchable Lovers, the Rise of Phoenixes, Detective L– were amazing shows I could rewatch until I die.

Side note: I am super excited for Xiao Zhan’s Jade Dynasty. So hopefully that movie will be available to us soon.

Korean Dramas:

All right guys. I’ve only recently started watching korean shows about half a year ago or so, so I haven’t seen too many, but the ones I have seen I’ve fallen into a deep love with that keeps me going lol.

My Country: The New Age (ongoing)

This show only has 8 episodes so far and I can’t tell you all how amazing this show is. Words can literally not even describe how much it’s consuming every waking second of my life right now. I think the main reason is Seon ho, who started off as someone you respect, but is constantly doing bad shit. He tries to salvage good things from the wrecks he keeps making, but who knows how long that will last. He is ambiguous and slowly turning into a villain. He is slowly turning into the things he wants to destroy and it’s heartbreaking. My heart aches for him and Hwi all the damn time. I just want them to be bff again and stop fighting, but of course this won’t happen. This show has political turmoil and a country at war with a royal family and council who just wants to watch the world burn. Of course, this means manipulating everyone to get what they want, but both Hwi and SH are trying to play their own game, accidentally putting themselves against each other constantly. Watch for heart break, friendship (sometimes), and very attractive male leads aha.

Also, the music is 1000000 thumbs up. All I can say is PLEASE WATCH IT AND FREAK OUT WITH ME.

Black

I don’t want to spoil too much about this show because it’s honestly an experience. It’s about a girl who can see when people are going to die because of the shadows that follow them. She meets a childhood friend, who has a secret, and he asks her to help him solve crimes and protect people from dying, but of course he has his own plans. Get ready for a funny and badass female lead guys.

It’s the first korean drama I watched and will always be one of my faves. It’s an incredible murder-mystery story with more layers than a damn onion. It’ll keep you on your toes and the ending makes me cri evry tiem.

Arthdal Chronicles

At first I thought this show was kind of weird, but an episode in and I was hooked. This show is difficult to explain, but it starts with a war between Arth and the Neanthal. 2 legendary babies get separated and live in opposite parts of the country. This show is hard to describe but it follows the 3 mains, Eunsom, Tanya, and Saya (and Tagon/ Taelha lol) and their fight through tragedy, and sometimes hell on Arth (lol – like hell on earth – am I funny yet). It’s all about a fight for power and revenge among the tribes. Every single character in this show has a different reason, but they all want power to get revenge, basically.

The fantasy aspect of this show and the different ‘species’ are incredible. It does get very political, but the fun of it is all the plotting, and how the characters fix their plans that don’t work out. Half way through I kept screaming at my TV for the mains (Tanya/Saya specifically) to just fkking talk to each other ughhh. Also, Saya will be my favourite unstable boy forever. 

It has 18 episodes on netflix so far, but just signed up for 2 more seasons (thank god because if they stopped at 18 eps I’d pull a Rosa Diaz and kill everyone and then myself -.-”). I can’t wait for it to come back. GIVE ME MORE CONTENT.
