Oc-tober Day 8 - Wonder - Branniar

"Ai, alae!"

It is an understatement, surely, and Branniar is dimly aware of Sardan grinning like a loon beside him. He doesn't care right now though, not with the whole of Evendim laid out before them like a painting of a land out of legend, from the fog rolling off the distant northern reaches of Emyn Uial to Annúminas glittering like a jewel in the sun. He steps forward tentatively, the weather-worn stone of the Colossus firm beneath his feet. The view from the bluffs over Men Erain is nothing to this.

"Here," Sardan grips his arm and pulls him, step light and uncaring of the drop, over to the edge of the star-tipped crown Elendil bears. They sit, feet dangling over the High King's stern brow, and look out. "There is much that needs repair here, but it is hale enough to hold a few men."

High above, the sun climbs ever higher in the sky and the mists over the lake begin to burn away. Far below, the miniture figure of Cudhaer tinkers with the old siege engine. In the distance, beyond Emyn Uial, Branniar can see the Blue Mountains rise like a towering wall, a sentinel to watch over this hidden land of theirs. A wind stirs the trees on the far shore.

With a bird's eye view, Evendim looks as wild, untamed, and ancient as it had sixty-odd years before, when Calenglad had led them through Parth Aduial and to its shining shores. He breaths in, then out once more. Clean, crisp northern air floods his lungs, and he smiless.

"How fare the northern estates?" Sardan breaks a silence grown long, and Branniar draws himself back from his contemplation of the view. The young man elaborates, "The lighthouse and Barad Tharsír trouble us often, and it has been some days since we heard from Tinnudir."

"We have kept a handle on them," Branniar answers bluntly, "But little beyond that. Orchalwë led a sortie up yesterday and I hear they found some victory on the slopes of Tham Ornen. Even as often as we drive them out, there is little chance we will hold it for long."

The wind of distant trees reaches them at last, ruffling their hair and stirring cloaks, and Sardan swears softly when his hair loosens itself from its knot and falls into his face. The tie falls, almost slowly, from his shoulder off the crowned Colossus altogether, and the two watch it drift with the wind until they lose sight of it. Sardan curses once more, heartfelt, and Branniar chuckles.

"We shall find you another, I have no doubt." In the meantime, Sardan tugs his hood up to tame his hair.

The sun reaches its zenith overhead and begins its long descent, but the pair do not stir for an hour more. Even then, they are reluctant to depart this elevated world, but Evendim is not safe yet, and there is work to be done.

Salomon Andrée Arctic Expedition. Launched in 1897 and they were never heard of again; the balloon crash-landed and a group of three survived for 75 days trying to get back to land. The film laid buried in the ice untill it was recovered in 1930.

Haunting Photos Discovered In The Arctic Ice 33 Years After A Doomed Expedition Set Out

Traveling in a hot air balloon is a dicey way to fly, even in the 21st century, on a non-breezy day. Traveling in a hot air balloon above the Arctic Ocean in 1897 is beyond perilous - it's quixotic. But in an attempt to discover and fly over the North Pole, Swedish engineer S.A. Andre and his companions, physics professor Nils Strindberg and civil engineer Knut Fraenkel, hoped to accomplish such a feat when they took off from Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago about 650 miles from the North Pole, in July 1897. After two days, their hydrogen-filled silk balloon, Ornen (Eagle), deflated rapidly and landed on ice. The balloonists weren't hurt, but they were ill-prepared for survival in stark icy climes, especially with colder weather approaching. The exact date they perished, and how, are not known, but the last entry in Andre's diary is October 8, 1897, when he noted they had to stay in their tent due to bad weather. They might have been felled by the cold weather and physical exhaustion; other possibilities include botulism or drowning. No one knew their fate until 33 years later, when sealers and scientists aboard the Norwegian sealing ship Bratvaag discovered the balloonists' frozen boat, camp, and cadavers. Among the men's belongings, they found journals kept by Andre and Fraenkel, along with Strindberg's camera and remarkably intact film. This list features some of the 93 photographs salvaged from Strindberg's camera. They are haunting, a reminder of harsh Arctic conditions - and the explorers who dare to venture there so the rest of us know how difficult survival can be. Jander Selelos, Baron of the Wormhills Human (?), 25 years old. A favored guest at the queen’s court, a perpetually masked aristocrat, a social butterfly and a courtly mystery.  (A longer bio, hence the readmore!)

Baron Jander is the only son of Baron Ornen Selelos and his houseguest/mistress, the Dowager Landgravine Deheune, both of whom lived in the isolated schloss that Jander himself grew up in. The schloss was a mile from the nearest town, and several day's journey to the nearest dwelling of similar status - positioned on the side of a precipitous peak, it looks down on a cavernous valley, and many of the other smaller hills that give the region its name. Baron Ornen was always an eccentric, and although he made the required trips for the months-long stays at the Queen's court, he spent most of his time in the ancestral home in the Wormhills, and refused to allow his son's introduction to court until he was fully an adult. This was a bone of contention that the old baron would not budge on - he deigned to leave his home, he would not have his son travel until he was mature. Though the queen wasn’t exactly pleased with this, she threw the old baron the bone. 

Because of the isolated location of Ornen's family home, and his pickiness as to visitors, few people saw Jander while he was growing up, besides his father, mother, & their staff - in particular, the Dowager Landgravine's favorite footman, who's become Jander's retiring bodyguard. The only outsider with regular contact with the Selelos family was young Jander’s tutor, the finest that money could import from the southern provinces. Baron Ornen always gave glowing reports of his son, as doing well and being a great young man. As biased as they sounded, surprisingly, the few people who stayed at schloss reported similarly - sure, he was young, and somewhat impertinent, but he looked like he was going to grow into a handsome young man with a winning personality. As a result, when it was time for Jander’s courtly introduction at 19, no one was sure what they’d be getting, but they waiting for the day with bated breath. Would they get a handsome young man who'd win over the bright young things who are always in court? Would they get an eccentric recluse like the father, distant and no fun at parties?

They got the former, though his charms were somewhat mitigated. Jander's a great wit, with a fondness for wordplay that's impressive at parties, and annoying as hell when he uses it in arguments. He has a tendency to talk circles around people, both deliberately and accidentally, and although he's fun to talk to, it can be a bit tiring if you're not very dedicated or focused on the conversation. He adores dancing - and is known for it at the balls held at court, though he has to take frequent breaks or he'll get exhausted. In general, he gets tired very easily, though that never seems to put a damper on his enthusiasm for conversation. Contrary to his isolated upbringing, Jander’s something of a chatterbox, or a social butterfly. In some ways, his father's eccentricity is still there, though. He's incredibly snappy and short with people he doesn't like, and won't listen to any overtures of a truce - which only makes people who dislike him dislike him more. And, too, he doesn't invite anyone back to his home in the Wormhills - even fewer people than his father invited. Jander came into his title when he was 21, when Ornen Selelos died after a long illness, survived by the Dowager Landgravine, who still lives in the schloss with Jander (for the half-year he's there). Courtly affairs come naturally to him, and in many ways, he's a better baron than his father was - at least, a more sociable one.  

The Baron's most defining feature to most, unfortunately, is not his cleverness or his fondness for wordplay, but the porcelain mask he wears at all times. It covers his whole face, aside from his eyes (a dark brown, with long lashes), and no one in court's seen it taken off - he even keeps it on to kiss the queen's ring. He also wears gloves at all times, which means that no skin (besides the bits by his eyes) on his body shows. Besides this, he's at the peak of fashion, with a particular tendency for lace and silver trim - and as all the garments are tailored to his bony frame, they fit perfectly. His hair flows around and back from the mask, dark brown and down to his shoulders, loosely wavy - he prefers not to tie it back. People have all sorts of theories about the mask - to hide that he's not actually Baron Ornen's son, to cover up some sort of deformity, to hide the fact that he's a changeling, as a deliberate ploy for attention. Nobody knows for sure, though, since no one's seen his face, except, some people say, for the queen's spymaster. The spymaster, Marlis Iarnucon, is Jander's closest friend at court, and the two dance together at least once a night - he's the only man she'll dance with, and he's gone back to her room more times than anyone else can claim (Marlis is a distrusting woman). In turn, Marlis is one of the few people in court who have been to the schloss. All this makes the baron a fascinating man to some, and a repulsive one to others. The queen, in particular, with her raging curiosity, wants to find out what it is the Baron's hiding - what it is all the Barons Selelos have hidden. Jander, for all his gabbing, does not spill secrets.

DSS arrests ISWA, Boko Haram leaders in Abuja, The Department of State Services (DSS) has announced the arrests of the leaders of the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) and some Boko Haram terrorists, at Kukuntu Village, Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT, in Abuja. In a statement signed by Tony Opuiyo, the Service’s identified the arrested leaders as Bashiru Adams and Rufai Sajo. It further noted that the arrests was part of its efforts to thwart the budding cells of the Islamic terrorists, disclosing that it was equally a harvest of arrests for gunrunners and kidnap kingpins at every part of the country. The service specifically celebrated the arrest of the members of the dreaded Basalube kidnap group in Abuja that were responsible for the kidnap of Sen Ayodele Arise and a Portuguese National, Emmanuel Machada, who died in their custody last year. “The DSS wishes to apprise the public of its successes in its determination to rid the country of crime,” the statement read. “It is to this end that the Service singularly or in conjunction with sister security agencies embarked on series of operations aimed at degrading or eliminating the capabilities of unscrupulous elements including suspected kidnappers, cultists, fraudsters, militia members and terrorists. “On June 17, 2018 at Karu Village, Abuja, two members of the dreaded Basalube kidnap group, namely Usman (aka Siddi) and Ibrahim Muhammed (aka Ganaja) were apprehended. “It will be recalled that the duo had been involved in several kidnap activities, notably those of Sen Ayodele Arise on December 5, 2017 in Kogi State and a Portuguese National, Emmanuel Machada (late) earlier on October 24, 2017 during which two Policemen were killed in the same Kogi State. “In order to flush out the Basalube kidnap gang, the Service further carried out an operation in which one of the group’s notorious members, Tambaya Umar, was arrested on April 24, 2018 at Odigie Village, Ovia North-East Local Governor Area of Edo State. “Umar was arrested alongside Ibrahim Ali, Abubakar Mohammed, Aliyu Manu and Umar Mohammed for their complicity in the group’s numerous criminal acts. “Earlier in the year, on March 27, 2018, at Calabar town, Cross River State, five members of a kidnap syndicate namely; Simeon Paul, Emmanuel Anna Etim, Eric John Out, Famous Eket Oleke and Felix Bassey Eshet were arrested. “The underlisted items were recovered from the gang; one AK-47 Rifle; three empty AK-47 Magazines; 38 rounds of live ammunition; two live rounds of 9mm ammunition; one Mossberg pump action rifle; and 15 live cartridges of ammunition. “On April 14, 2018, Adamu Hassan (aka Aiki), the dangerous gang leader of a kidnap syndicate was arrested at Ogbomosho, Osun State. Hassan was responsible for the kidnap of a Pastor at Ibillo, Edo State. “Five Pump Action Rifles and Nine loaders were recovered from him during his arrest. Initial investigation and confessions of Hassan led to a follow-up operation on May 23, 2018. During this operation, Umar Abdullahi (aka Wukari) and Hassan Ahmed, gunrunners and associates of Aiki were apprehended at Ishua, Akoko-South East LGA, Ondo State. The duo was in possession of five pump action rifles. “Determined to continuously thwart the budding cells of the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) and Boko Haram, the Service conducted special operations on identified targets. This led to the successful arrest of Bashiru Adams and Rufai Sajo, commanders of the group on May 5, 2018 at Kukuntu Village, Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT, Abuja. “Relatedly, the Service had on April 28, 2018, at Muda Lawal Market, Bauchi, Bauchi State, arrested another member of the ISWA, Umar Dogo. The suspects were discovered to have concluded plans to not only perpetuate the ideals of the Movement in the area, but to, in collaboration with Boko Haram, carry out heinous violent attacks on innocent persons. “Following intelligence reports, Adamu Hassan (aka Bale) and Abubakr Abubakar (aka Alhaji/Buba), experts in Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) assembly were arrested. Also on April 12 and 19, 2018, at Gassol and Ardo LGAs of Taraba State, Mohammed Saleh (aka Azrak) and Iliyasu Abubakar (aka Ruwa), Boko Haram members and cattle rustlers were respectively apprehended. “Between May 9 and 29, 2018, several associates of the dreaded kidnapper, Terwase Akwaza (aka Gana) were arrested at various locations in Benue State. “Those arrested are: Ada Kajo James, Tikaa Ornen Desmond and Joseph Ikpa. A Toyota Venza Sport Utility Vehicle was recovered from the suspects. “Similarly, on May 29, 2018, Umar Ali, leader of a kidnap syndicate notable for operating around Edo and Delta States was arrested at Oghara, Ethiope West LGA, Delta State. “Also arrested were some of Ali’s lieutenants, namely: Faruk Bello, Bello Ali, Mohammed Ali and Abdullahi Ali. This gang was responsible for the abduction of a Turkish national in Ifaki, Ekiti State on May 6, 2018. “On May 14, 2018, the Service rescued a kidnap victim, Bimbo Adebiyi upon a raid of the group’s hideout at Grace Estate, Ajah, Lagos State. Other members of the kidnap gang that were apprehended include: Tunde Akinsola; Wakil Alade; Olumide Braimoh; Raymond Adingiou; Isiaq Abesin; Victoria Nwabueze; and Zabala Amolokwe. “On May 9, 2018, around Katibu Village, Lau LGA, Taraba State, a joint team of the Service, the Military and the Police while on a clearance patrol, encountered an ambush by a group of armed herdsmen, numbering about 100. “The operatives’ superior firepower forced a retreat by the attackers. However, during the confrontation, 10 herdsmen were killed and several others escaped with bullet wounds. “The items recovered from them include; two AK-47 Rifles, one G3 rifle, three dane guns, two cutlasses, and four motorcycles. “On May 25, 2018, Abdulhameed Musa and Adamu Abdulkareem, both members of a militia group terrorizing villages in Nasarawa State were arrested at Yelwa Village, Doma Local Government Area of the state. “On May 24, 2018, along Lafia-Akwanga road, Nasarawa Eggon, Nasarawa State, an arms courier, Adamu Hamza was arrested while transporting arms and ammunition to kidnap syndicates operating within the Katsina and Zamfara axis. “The consignment was transported in a Red Volkswagen Golf car with Lagos registration number FK-390-EL. On June 1, 2018, a joint operation with the military at North Bank, Makurdi led to the arrest of Akpenlamun Uto, a notorious gunrunner and kidnap kingpin whose activities have no doubt fuelled violent attacks around this locality. “Previously, on June 6, 2018, at the Boys’ hostel of Kogi State University (KSU), Anyingba, 14 suspected cultists were arrested over repeated cult clashes at the Institution. “Items recovered from the suspects include: one locally made Pistol, one browning Pistol, one shot gun, live cartridges; an axe, a machete and GSM Phones. On the same date, an internet fraudster, Obinomhe Omonjele Daniel, who clones the social media accounts of security personnel, and uses same to defraud unsuspecting members of the public was arrested at Egbe, Uromi, Esan North LGA, Edo State. While other accomplices of his, particularly, Sabi Boy are on the run, investigations are ongoing,” the apprised. The statement further noted that; “with these arrests, it is envisaged that calmness will return to the otherwise volatile areas where these criminals had held sway.” “The Service is therefore poised to consolidate on these successes and bring about an atmosphere in which law abiding citizens will pursue their legitimate businesses. While reassuring everyone of their safety, the Service calls upon people who may have useful security information not to hesitate to volunteer same to the appropriate security agencies and formations,” the service appealed in the statement. Day 12

OMG! You can't begin to describe the scenery on the train from Oslo to Bergen. It starts out being spectacular and gets way better!! The trip takes about 7 hours and stops a half dozen times in different stations. The further you go, the better the scenery. One you get past the tree line it's the most amazing views I've ever seen. Snow covered mountains with rushing streams and water falls down down the sides of the mountains. We had the perfect day of sun and clouds to get view imaginable. Once we got Bergen we checked into the Scandic Ornen hotel which is a very modern eclectic Scandinavian style. Very cool place. Once settled we thought we'd decided we'd explore and found a nice little vino bar(shocking I know). Chatting with the locals we were told that we should take the tram to the top and view the city. It's called Floibanen and it goes straight up the mountain and opens up with glass roof to the most beautifully view of Bergen I can imagine. Once at the top you can hang out as long as you'd like and just soak in everything below. Hard to describe the beauty, but you can see some of thru the 300 pictures I took. Nothing compared to the train ride where I took 800+ Another perfect day! 1. Snow in June? 2. Greatest views ever! 3. Smokers everywhere 4. Is all of Asia here? 5. Temperature is always 55! 6. Scenery is unbelievable!
