You know, in retrospect it’s obvious Mesk wasn’t a “real” Orion.
He didn’t know who Tendi was!

Confession #60
"I love that Lower Decks has Tendi, an Orion, be one of the main characters debunking Orion stereotypes but at the same time, I agree with people who say Tendi comes from a rich and privileged background so it's easier for her to become a scientist compared to other Orions who can only afford to make a more stereotypical living as pirates and sex workers."

Tendi is a bit of an unreliable narrator in regards to orions
this is not hate of tendi or of lower decks, which I love heart and soul. Just a more realistic take on what we have been told.
But I do think it is important to keep in mind her descriptions of orion society are of someone *extremely priviledged* in the social hierarchy and that orion society is very unequal.
She is the rich international student at a university -- she is right to dispel a lot of myths about orion society perpetuated by the more hegemonic power in the sector. But also realize her perspective is heavily influenced by her position as one of the richest families in the planet. Like its good that her grandmother was a scientist on a science ship, and good on them recognizing orion scientific achievements. But was that a position available to the common orion, or like, something wealthy people were able to access in orion society? It is amazing that she is putting aside her privileged position to join starfleet, but is that a possibility for her only because she is wealthy? Like can the guy whose job is to carry divans all day make the same decision? Is she less likely to downplay aspects of society like hormonal coercion, or the slave trade as part of their piracy operations because the wealth of her family allows them to opt out of those aspects of society? Is she to some degree ignorant of societal inequality b/c of her wealth? She sees a lot of orion society as embarrassing and worthy of critique which is laudable of her. But I do think she might have a bit of a myoptic view, too. If you've never read this medium article on the international school class, it is enlightening: https://medium.com/@rachel.engel/an-open-letter-to-the-international-school-community-our-role-in-the-black-lives-matter-movement-c92ba725d93c (on the transnational capitalist class)

I have done this a while back on this post, and wanted to do it again but this time without Vulcans, Trills and Bajorans because they clearly were the favourites

I have to know, so y’all who like Humans/Other Alien Species from Star Trek instead of Vulcans, what’s the biggest appeal?
Like, as a Vulcan/Human fan, my favorite stuff about it, cause I’ll usually project onto the Human, is like: having a partner who will never yell at me, someone who can understand me (telepathy and mind links), someone who will be forever patient with me, the quiet intimacy, etc etc etc
So for the other species, what’s the biggest plus sides?

LUHNES, TEMEK, AND RY'TALLA...
In the lower decks of the syndicate, three Orion lowlifes toil their youth away with the hollow promise of prosperity. Although deceived by this pipe dream, the trio have a way of making the best of the worst (an easy feat considering the off-the-books nonprofit they run...) on their journey to shallow graves. Capitalism kills, but leave it to an Orion to cheat death.

Does anyone else find it odd that Tendi’s family refers to themselves as “criminals?” Criminals break the law, but what laws *on Orion* are they breaking? Sure, they’re breaking Federation laws, but why would they define themselves by that?

"I honestly think Tendi was being a dick for asking T'Lyn to delete her notes on Orion Culture. The entire point of T'Lyn's notes was to document Orion Culture and Tendi was okay with it until she realised that Orions are infact still very much tied to their space pirate roots, to the point they have actual drug gigolos and crime syndicates. Tendi didnt want T'Lyn to delete her notes for being inaccurate, she wanted them deleted because Tendi doesnt want people to know about Orion culture. Atleast that is what the show (perhaps unintentionally) made it seem to be"

Orion Headcanon
I absolutely loved the newest episode of Lower Decks, and it left me with a headcanon that I have to share.
Okay, so historically, pirates and pirate culture were more egalitarian than the wider society. This makes sense if you consider the reality that being a pirate is already breaking with social mores. Women and POC were often able to climb to the highest echelons of pirate society in a way they could not in mainstream society.
Now, imagine an entire planet based on piracy, on being the outcasts of the galaxy. What would matter most in that society would be one's ability to pirate. And Orion women have pheromones that work on other lifeforms. But the majority of space-faring peoples come from patriarchal societies that underestimate women. The Ferengi, in particular, are severely misogynistic and patriarchal and as the yankee traders of the galaxy, they'd also have the most lucrative cargo.
A smart pirate would place a man in the captain's chair, pretend to be his slave and beg for help from the tough man on the bridge of the target ship. All she needs to do is get close enough to control him with her pheromones and she's taken the other ship without a shot fired.
Of course Orion is matriarchal! The best pirates would have been women. Slavery isn't necessary when it's this easy for women to dominate and manipulate the men of other species and the society values the skills of piracy above all else. Orion men simply don't have this advantage.
I admit it; I envy Orion female privelege.

On the topic of Orion ocs, I have one kinda “main” one where I just keep putting her in different situations with her Human friend (I really need to figure out names for my ocs), and her and her friend are both more on the femme side of things because:
Hopefully I describe this well, but it’s about the,,,,fuck what was the word,,,,expectations?,,,,no. that’s not the word. but it’s sorta close to the word I’m looking for. anyways it’s about the expectations people have about them vs the truth
So the Orion is like,, prime example of what one would expect of an Orion woman, she’s drop dead gorgeous, flirty, very sex positive, loves socializing, wears v revealing clothing, etc etc etc
And the Human is on the “opposite” end of it, she’s very reserved, very into monogamy, v shy about sex stuff and also just shy in general, covered up by Orion’s standards, and she seems “frigid” to everyone
And everyone assumes that even tho they’re friends, there has to be some hidden resentment in there, like maybe the Human resents how attractive her friend is and how everyone flocks to her, something like that
But the reality is that there’s none of that, they’re the best of friends, platonic soulmates, the Human doesn’t resent her friend because everyone likes her, and the Orion doesn’t let people treat her friend badly just because they don’t find her attractive, they’re each other’s hype squad, and they’re both ready to throw down if someone insults their friend
The conflict between them is mostly adhd vs autism conflict, the Orion needing 3 things going off to fall asleep while the Human is in sensory hell and needs those 3 things off immediately please, the Human not being able to handle touching most of the time while the Orion needs to be wrapped around her like an octopus for comfort, etc
There’s a lot more to them, but yeah, it’s about people approaching them with expectations™️ and then being taken completely off guard by how well they go with each other
(Also they have a Vulcan friend who shows up a little bit later and makes it obvious about how relative it all is because just by standing there they make the Human suddenly look sociable and other stuff)
