"BARS LABOR MAN AS FAIR WAGE OFFICER," Toronto Star. August 12, 1912. Page 5. --- City Solicitor Says Council Must Choose One Over His Head. --- MANY APPLICATIONS IN --- No labor man will be appointed to the vacant civic position of Fair Wage Officer for Toronto if City Solicitor Johnston can prevent it. The first and only appointment made since Council created the office, was that of George A. Crane, an employe of the Roadways Branch of the Works Department, Commissioner of Works Harris took exception to an employe of his department attending to duties out- side the department, and Mr. Crane, resigned the position.
Labor men of Toronto were especially anxious that such an office should be created in order that it might be filled by a labor representative. City Solicitor Johnston, who has full power to appoint the Fair Wage Officer, is strongly opposed to this scheme.
"I shall not appoint a labor man to fill the post, nor a boss contractor. On that point I am firm," said Mr. Johnston. If Council decided that a labor man must fill the office I shall refuse to make such an appointment, and it will then have to be made over my head." A special conference was called some time ago to settle the principle involved in filling this office. No decision was reached; and Council will be asked to make a pronouncement.
Already twenty-five applications for this $1,000 civic job have been received by the City Solicitor. and the great majority of them are from labor men. "Qualifications appended to the appli- cations usually state the services which the applicant has rendered to the cause of labor," said the City Solicitor.
Mr. Johnston will probably combine the duties of Fair Wage Officer with that of other duties in his own department; and give the employee some extra remuneration.

The Canadian Labour Congress has launched an emergency task force to address escalating anti-2SLGBTQ+ hate as unions across Canada begin mobilizing to defend queer and trans people in workplaces and beyond.
Unionized workplaces, such as libraries and schools, have become battlegrounds in far-right attacks against queer and trans people across the country.
Gina McKay, president of CUPE Manitoba and CLC equity vice president for 2SLGBTQ+ workers, said she’s seen hate affect workers at many levels, from hostile parents to anti-drag protests to book bans.
But the role of unions goes beyond protecting individual workers facing this hate in the workplace. The labour movement has the power to mobilize on-the-ground support, something the 2SLGBTQ+ community needs right now, McKay explained.
“That kind of organizing is exactly what we need because we know that the right is organized,” McKay told PressProgress. [...]

time and time again I'm reminded that so many misinterpret spinel in future (and in general really) and it makes me terribly sad
that girl is critically low on empathy, emotional maturity/regulation, and people skills. she doesn't know how to relate to people and she's often too self centered to really be able to see things from others perspectives. this doesn't make her a bad person but absolutely makes it difficult to be the friend she was made to be
and that never got magically fixed by the time future rolls around! she is still the same person she has always been, changed by her trauma absolutely, but I see so many confuse that change for a certain kind of emotional maturity that she just lacks
she has grown by the time future happens! she's way happier with the diamonds who treat her with the love and respect she so sorely needed that she never really got with pink! because the diamonds are also growing and changing past the people they were before! but she's not at the point where she's ready to process everything that's happened. she's fine and better now (through her own emphasis) despite the fact that that clearly isn't the case
like, I know it gets played for comedy, but what she did to steven and the earth does still eat at her to the point she's willing to blame steven turning into a monster completely on herself (even denying that white had anything to do with it because she feels that bad about it)
and she doesn't give steven any actually helpful advice cause she's just a terrible person for that! and that's fine!! her going through her character arc of choosing to move forward despite feeling like all you can be is a terrible villain because of the pain you've suffered, doesn't magically equip her with the skills to be a good friend lmao. she's still terrible at it actually! and this also isn't a bad thing, she just needs more time and support to develop those skills (things she hasn't acquired in the short time between the movie and future!)
I think the people making these claims often forget that this isn't spinel's story also, it's steven's. steven is far past the point where he wants to spend more time with people he doesn't like for the chance of them doing better (in this case the diamonds and spinel). that isnt to say that they're fixed in the slightest! quite the opposite really! but steven isn't dwelling on them so we don't get to see past the hints here and there in the background
but to say that spinel is fixed? that she's a totally different character and way lamer compared to when she was having a catastrophic meltdown? y'all just weren't paying attention to her

march + april rotation
it’s gonna be...... may finally posting the march + april rotation playlist. combining these two months since most of the music i listened to in march was off the previous rotation list!
flowers in my hair - calista garcia: sweet, slow, and syrupy. i love this song and how it feels like a breath of fresh air. it’s achingly romantic and has got me singing along and twirling my hair and kicking my feet. though, at the same time it’s so intimate i feel like i’m intruding
back for more - nia hendricks: the usual type of slow groove beat i adore that makes me want to dance around with the love of my life. it’s just as sweet as the previous one but it feels... lonely. mournful. i’d be dancing but with a ghost
bodybag - charlotte lawrence: this song is so *clenches fist* i am obsessed with how the body bag fills in for the other person in the relationship and holds her when they can’t or refuse to! the relationship is already dead! she’s holding on! in that liminal space between resurrection and burial! also the vocals in this are insane. my favorite part is ‘she’s at the bowery bar, showed you her paper heart’ and then ‘help me hurt and then i’ll come back’ YEOW
gasp of air - lisa curtis: THIS SONG MAKES ME WANT TO SING AND SCREAM ALONG AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS!!!!!!!!! and then the lyrics slapped me across the face. ‘but i’ll stay and such ‘cause i think it’s love enough’ ‘i’m yours enough that i come back’ ‘some water if i’m lucky but i would never ask that much’ ‘what kind of person needs to breathe A HEALTHY ONE I’M SURE BUT THAT’S NOT ME’??????????
nothing left to give - BAILEN: ‘i wanna live i’m sick of just trying to survive’ *looks into the camera* anyway. obsessed with this band and how weird this song sounds
kilimanjaro - dolores forever: this song and the next have me asking how songs can be this good. like. is it crack? is that what they put in these?? the music and the vocals are EVERYTHING it’s unlike anything i’ve heard recently and i’m digging it. then the harmonies?? and the lyrics???? ‘a thousand shards of glass from your silver tongue got me like a shot gun’ the way ‘i was young. you were pure ice and snow’ IS SUNG?????? WTF
labour - paris paloma: this has been my hype song for the past few weeks. the intensity of it still continues to blow my mind. it’s unapologetic and awful. it’s incredible. i felt every lyric in my gut. i don’t want to over explain it since i can’t do the song justice but it’s so brutally honest in describing and dismantling traditional roles placed upon women and girls. the entirety of it is like poking at a wound that never closes, a wound that’s been gaping and bleeding for centuries and it makes me so angry. the visceral reaction i had to the lyric ‘if we had a daughter’ girl i- ouuuuugh. i got sick to my stomach. i was screaming crying throwing up etc etc. anyway this song is a masterpiece. still haven’t recovered from it. also it’s a fucking bop.
bad blood - trousdale: another banger for the books!! trousdale always delivers these perfect harmonies and this time it’s a fantastic, bitter song but that’s not the only element! there’s indifference and confusion and acceptance! there’s healing! and the repetition of anyway *patcha holding earbuds meme* perfection
all the love - katie gregson-macleod: katie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how am i supposed to live laugh love in these conditions!!!!!!!! this one is SO SAD. i ache each time i listen to it. it doesn’t apply to romantic love but all other types of love and what happens when you lose it and how you deal with that loss. the grief is so thick it’s almost suffocating but as always the way she sings is enough for it to not be overwhelming. every lyric hits but the combination of her voice with ‘but i’d rather do that in bed alone’ is my favorite
BONUS: here are a few stray songs that didn’t quite fit in the narrative but i wanted to share them anyway :)
far and wide - WILDES: doesn’t quite fit the narrative, but it’s a good follow up to all the love. it’s toned down more and easier to get lost in, but still woven with the running strand of grief that makes it sorrowful. once again, back at it with the yearning
ava - famy: this song had me by the throat the first time i heard it in teen wolf and it still does. chewing glass over the switch between ‘this world is primal’ + ‘this world is rabid’ to ‘this world is pure’ + ‘this world is learning’  and ‘my conscious burning, my beastly flaw’

"ASKS MINIMUM WAGE OF 50 CENTS AN HOUR," Toronto Star. June 12, 1943. Page 3. --- Union Wants Cost-of-Living and Incentive Bonuses ---- Ottawa, June 3-CP) - The Canadian council of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (C.I.O.) today called for "a clear-headed democratic labor policy" by the federal government as the one solution to "the wholesale outbreak of strikes."
In a brief to the national war labor board, the union urged compulsory collective bargaining and speedier settlement of disputes; a minimum industrial wage rate of 50 cents an hour with full cost-of-living bonuses and incentive bonuses; a general survey of consumers' needs and appropriate rationing, and tax exemption for single persons with incomes up to $1.000 a year and married persons up to $1.800.

like i think that we really really really need to actually gain the social literacy and compassion to understand that. not tipping your server isn’t praxis, but the fact that it’s expected that the customer pay the wage of the server also doesn’t mean that the customer (often also stiffed and a victim of wage theft) isn’t obligated to do so, and that while this is within our own economic system a great injustice and act of violence that needs to be rectified, it is in fact not the greatest injustice in the world and seeing people comparing getting screamed at for war crimes to not being tipped demonstrates a drastic lack of any sense of proportion. this is me speaking as both a service worker and someone engaged in organizing. let me be absolutely clear that I am not saying that not tipping your server is praxis. if you are able to tip i think that you should. i also think that “it’s the social contract in america to tip your server” needs to be read as “the structure has been built so that resisting it is tantamount to being a class traitor, and there are no winners in this situation”. i make less than 1k a month. tipping at 15% is straight up not viable all of the time if i want to pay rent. that’s not praxis, that’s me trying to keep a roof over my head, same as the service worker who i can’t always tip. so much analysis of this matter on social media tends to boil down to brute utilitarianism that causes further fragementation among the working class, and not for unjust reasons.
but just as not tipping my server isn’t praxis, tipping my server also isn’t praxis. not because it doesn’t help the individual (it does) but because it functionally validates the extant system in which the customer directly pays the wages. especially in the digital age: whereas cash tips are often considered nontaxable income, digital tips are administered as directly taxable income by the employer. when tips are paid out as wages i think it’s a little unfair to consider them to be “gratuities”.
again: not tipping isn’t praxis, but i wonder often about how many people who parrot this point are engaged in labour organizing or support in any way other than tipping. everyone deserves to be paid for their labour. but likewise, putting the onus on the working class customer to do so doesn’t actually help anyone except for the employer.
if you’re getting pissed at other working-class people for not tipping high numbers, especially impoverished and/or marginalized people, i hope that you are also engaged in literally any form at all, no matter how intense or dedicated, to any kind of action or organization that supports increasing minimum wage and shifting this responsibility from the customer to the employer (i.e. working class to owning class).
#vent of sorts#i keep seeing that post about ''not tipping your server isn't praxis'' with the addition of#''i was a server who got yelled at by a european for being american at an american tourist memorial for 9/11 because of the iraq war''#and again i say this in a sense that isn't meant to diminish the legitimate trauma of service work#trauma in a very genuine sense#(brief reminder that this is what the term ''emotional labour'' was coined to describe is being expected to regulate and perform emotions#for your job but only being paid minimum wage because the only ''labour'' you're doing is physical/mental and keeping a smile while being#berated isn't ''labour'')#but without directly comparing and weighing traumas and experiences in order to invalidate another#i'm so tired of seeing ''not tipping your server doesn't help anyone'' specifically being backed up by the idea#that tipping and paying into the tipping model (no pun intended) is a morally neutral or net-positive action#without actually considering the widespread consequences of tipping culture as a whole on labour wages and employee rights#of course not tipping isn't going to solve anything#nothing is solved on an individualist level#but the idea that NOT tipping is a non-solution that individuals take#being refuted by the idea that tipping as a buffer that individuals engage in#rather than it leading into any discussion about organizing#is absolutely fucking infuriating#because believe me i WANT to tip servers i WANT to make sure that everyone is paid#but if i walk into a local brewpub and buy a beer at the isolated beer shop next door by a till worker i am prompted to tip as if it were#a full service establishment and transaction#and i think that is evidence enough that tipping is not a ''thank you'' to your server but rather the employer offloading the expectation#of paying their employees proper wages onto the customer#anyways as ever the solution isn't individual action but collective organizing and community support#if you're going to tip then tip in cash and if you're not going to tip then be as kind as possible#and if you're acting as if tipping your server is the ONLY morally correct action in this situation then please#look around at your local community organizations and labour organizations and housing organizations instead of yelling online at people#who often are not being paid enough to be able to pay rent let alone pay another person's wages#mutual aid is great and important but i straight up don't consider it ''mutual aid'' if it's filtered through an employer's income

It’s natural for us, as workers, to want a better deal. However, we can pursue gains today without giving up the goal of a fully democratic, worker-run economy tomorrow. We won’t achieve that lofty goal by making political deals or passing new laws. We can only achieve it by organizing where we are exploited and acting directly to take power back from our exploiters.
