#or rereading the raven cycle and annotating this time

i’m rereading the raven cycle right now to annotate it for a friend, and the way this series deals with abuse is so important to me
so often in media stories that deal with abuse fall into one of three categorie:
1. they minimize the abuse, brushing it off as normal or at least as something of little concern
2. they glamorize the abuse, turning into inspiration porn, or some sort of righteous story where someone does a Great Duty and Saves The Poor Character From The Abuse and they all ride off into the sunset
3. or, the abuse is the end of the story. it is relentlessly evil, there is no other side, the character will die in this house or relationship and there is no other end
and the thing about adam in the raven cycle is that his story doesn’t do any of those things. the abuse he faces is not pretty, it is not glamorous, it is not “beautifully tragic.” it’s just- abuse. and it’s awful.
but it’s not the end of his story.
he gets out. he isn’t saved, but he does have help (and i could write a whole other essay about the nuance of adam’s pride and refusal of help and how well written it is but that’s for another day) adam has friends who love him and a chosen family waiting for him on the other side and he MAKES IT OUT. he goes to harvard, he builds a life for himself where he is happy and loved and just
adam’s story gives all of the time that is needed to address the abuse he went through, but that’s not where his story starts and ends. it’s an important part of his life, but it doesn’t define him.
it’s such a hopeful story, and more importantly a /realistically/ hopeful one. there’s no knight in shining armor, there’s no fairy godmother, there’s just the simple fact that life does get better, and there IS future after abuse.
i just love adams story so much ok it means so much to me

October reads
Tumblr media
I know we're already one week into November, but yeah haven't gotten around to but until now, so here a my October reads now, even if a bit late
Red, White and Royal Blue (reread) 4/5
Don't have much to say about this book. It's a good, solid read, the characters are very likeable. Nothing special but definitely worth reading
Darius the great deserves better 4.5/5
Okay I absolutely love the Darius the Great books. The way depression and mental health in general is talked about is just *mwuah* so good. As a person who also suffers from depression and other mental illnesses, it's just really nice to read a book for once where it's talked about without being used in a 'my whole life revolves around my diagnosis but I refuse to get treatment' way. I also really enjoyed the way relationships are presented in a healthy but natural kinda way.
Bungo Stray Dogs vol. 7,8&9 3.5/5
I've already seen the anime and am now reading the mangas, so I'm still reading the volumes that appear in the anime. I'm generally not a big fan of mangas/graphic novels but I always really enjoy reading Bungo Stray Dogs. The plot is interesting (if confusing in the best way possible), the characters are quite interesting and the art style is exactly to my taste
The Raven Boys (reread) 4/5
Okay so I love the Raven cycle series, and it's the only books I've actually annotated with sticky notes haha. The characters, the plot, the writing is just beautiful. The first book isn't my favourite out of the four, but still an incredible beautiful book. There are a few things that bother me throughout the books, like how some racist elements are included regarding Henry Cheng, so ehhh.
Maurice 3.5/5
So this was one of my first attempts of reading an English book written in the 20th century, as English isn't my first language, and it went better then I expected haha. I liked the concept of the books, even though I sometimes found the characters a but frustrating from time to time, but that's probably due to historical context and stuff.
Last Night at the Telegraph Club 5/5
Simply no complaints. I loved the book. I still love it. It was impossible to but down and I immediately fell in love with our protagonist and her love interest. I loved the little snippets of stories out of the life's of her family (especially her aunt) Definitely one of my favourite books from now on.
The Passing Playbook (reread) 4.5/5
I've read this book first in August, then reread in September and now reread it in October again. It's just such an sweet, adorable story, but still touches on some more serious topics. The characters are just really loveable. The writing isn't anything special, and there is definitely room for improvement, but the story is just so catching that I couldn't find myself to care.
Peter Darling 3/5
It was alright. I felt the romance was just really rushed and there was a lot that just remained... untouched, but it was a quick and easy read, and the characters were really interesting and multi-layered.
The Goldfinch 4/5
Okay so I definitely prefer Donna Tartt's 'The Secret History', but I still enjoyed this book. I must say that due to its length, I often considered not finishing it, but I was too invested to actually stop. I don't think I have to go into depth on how incredible the writing is. I really liked the part of Theos childhood, and I think that the book kinda lost some of its potential after the time-jump.
Aristotle and Dante dive into the waters of the world 4.5/5
If i'm being honest, I was really nervous about this book, as most of the times, sequels that were released much later than the first book are often... disappointing. But this was NOT the case here. I still related strongly to Ari and his views, and I was just really happy how many things were tied up that were left open in the first book. The 'Aristotle and Dante' books will forever be one of my favourite books and comfort reads
See you next month

Rereading Raven Cycle and commenting on its use of Latin pt. 5 (contains spoilers, obviously)
Tumblr media
The Raven Boys, p.245
The gang discovers Cabeswater and Ronan finds the stone with his handwriting on it, saying that the trees speak Latin – Arbores loqui latine.
But, unfortunately, there's a mistake here. Loqui is what is called a deponent verb, which means that it is active in meaning, yet only a passive form exists. The problem is that loqui is the infinite form, so Arbores loqui latine actually means The trees to speak Latin. Which is a shame, considering it is one of the most frequently quoted passages of the book series. It should actually be Arbores loquuntur latine. (And you can be certain that when I get this phrase tattooed, which is only a matter of time, I will use the grammatically correct version).
Also on the same page: Nomine appellant!, which is translated as Call it by name. It actually means They call by name. Using the imperative, it would either be have to be Nomine appella! if you spoke to one person, or Nomine appellate! if you spoke to more people. I also consulted my trusted online dictionary on this one, and it suggested the phrase nomen reddere alicui for calling something by name. So, that would be Nomen ei redde! (to one person) or Nomen ei reddite! (to more people).
But at least Ronan confesses that the Latin is pretty crappy in this very scene 😅
Disclaimer: I only started to learn Latin a couple of months ago, so my knowledge of it is in no way all-encompassing. So if you find any mistakes in my ramblings, please do not hesitate to correct me – cheers!
(For page numbers, I use my heavily annotated (read: scribbled in) US paperback copies of The Raven Cycle series.)

Books to finish
Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefvater (Audio book)
First book in the new series set in the same universe as the Raven Cycle. Follows dreamers, hunters, and their race to the end of the world.
I dont have a lot left of this book but I will probably reread at some point because some things are a little confusing but I am enjoying it!
All for the Game 1: The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic (Paperback)
First book in the series. Follows runaway Neil Josten and his first few weeks at Palmetto State University while trying to hide from his past despite being put in the spotlight.
Rereading this for the 5th? time and annotating it (first time reading my physical copy!)
A Charm of Magpies 1: The Magpie Lord by KJ Charles (E-book)
Historical and paranormal romance between recently returned from exile, Lord Crane, and Stephen a magician from a family ruined by the Crane family. They’re teamed up trying to save Lord Crane from a mysterious curse and Stephen needs to figure out a way through a web of plots to save both of them.
I have only read the first few chapters, it’s just under 240 pages so I think its doable. Basically picked it up because it had Magpie Lord in the title and I wanted to read more books I didn’t already know or where on LGBT lists but then I found out it was gonna be a MLM romance which was a welcomed surprise.
Books to read
My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithewaite (Audio book)
A thriller/crime about Korede and her sister Ayoola who has a bad habit of killing her boyfriends. When the handsome doctor at Koredes work asks for her sisters number she has to deal with the knowledge of what her sister might do to him.
The Broken Earth 1: The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin (E-book)
Fantasy series. The end of the world. Three terrible things happen in one day. A woman comes home to find her husband has murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter. The world-spanning empire collapses as most of its citizens are murdered. And across the continent known as the Stillness, a great rift has torn into the heart of the earth, spewing ash enough to darken the sky for years, or centuries.
Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand (Audio book)
YA thriller about Girls fighting a monster that preys on young women. It’s pretty long (13hrs) but I am hoping it will be good!
Taking Charge of Adult ADHD by Russekk A. Barkley (Audio book)
Reading this because I am back in school this fall and a lot of ADHD stuff is geared at kids and I am curious about the content. Also trying to read more non-fiction.
Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall (Audio book)
Recommended by a friend. Pretty sure its a fake dating turns real trope. Set in the public eye?
Goals for August
Read everyday
Finish The Magpie Lord
Annotate one book
My august tbr is pretty ambitious so my goals are a little low just to balance it out.

Note
1, 2 and 19 for the book asks 😊
1. How many books did you read this year?
if we’re just counting novels, then i just read 23, but if we’re also counting comics and graphic novels, it would be 39
2. Did you reread anything? What?
yep! i reread The Raven Cycle for the fourth time. i wasn’t even planning on reading it in 2019 but my best friend surprised me with 1) reading my favorite books, and 2) the copies she read and annotated, so of course i had to read them myself!
19. Did you use your library?
i unfortunately didn’t. i live on a farm in a small town so it’s kind of a hassle to drive all the way into town for a library that doesn’t really have a good selection

Reading Quest Update
We’re 14 days into the reading quest and I just finished the first book that counts towards the Mage path challenges. Jup.
I completed the Read a book based on mythology by reading Blue Lily Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater which is 391 pages. The reason it’s taken me this long to start and finish a Reading Quest book is that I wanted to reread and annotate the previous books. I’m really glad that I did, but it means I’m not sure I’ll be able to complete the Mage quest - we’ll see!
But I can also check off the Expansion and Time Warp bonus challenges! For Expansion: read a companion novel or a short story I read the two holiday short stories from the Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater (they’re very short, 5 pages combined, and I’m not sure if they actually count, but look I’m just playing for fun at this point, I’m hopelessly behind). And for Time Warp: read a book set in the past or the future I read Heltekongens Datter by Herta J Enevoldsen, which is set in the 1630′s. It was 181 pages and super bad, can’t recommend it.
My Progress
XP: 40
HP: 68
Level: 1
Challenges completed: 3
Pages: 577

Raven Boys, Tarot Cards, & Things That Have Changed
This blog post is about a book series called The Raven Boys, tarot cards, crystals, other "weird things," & looking back on the past two years.
Tumblr media
1. The Raven Boys
Exactly 2 years ago, I read Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle series. I fell in love with the prose, masterful writing, uniqueness, and just about everything else. And I was lucky enough to get to meet Maggie in NYC at BookCon 2017!
Tumblr media
This year, I got a random hankering to reread this series, knowing it had been a good while since I’d first read it but never dreaming I would pick it up only one day before the exact two-year mark of the day I  started the first book. (I had annotated in my copy of the book and found a date scrawled in the first or second chapter—it’s actually very possible that was the second day I was reading it and it had been exactly 2 years!)
Now I'm on the second book (pictured above) and I’m massively enjoying rereading this series. I still highly, highly recommend it. It is AMAZINGLY written—I’m talking literally breathtaking prose as well as inordinately complex/realistic/awesome characters—and content so unique you really can't find it anywhere else (a perfect blend of magic & reality, the occult, old Welsh legends, vintage aesthetics, the Shenandoah Valley, and more). The Raven Boys has something to offer for everyone; seriously, just take my word for it and read. These. Books.
2. Tarot
One of the reasons I wanted to reread The Raven Boys is because it has a lot to do with tarot/psychics/cool stuff like that. I’ve been playing around with tarot (& crystals and stuff) for a few months now, and even though this series was already one of my favorites, I wanted to see if I liked it even more now that I’m "in" to those subjects.
[ NOTE after writing this post I was lucky enough to get tickets to a tarot and writing seminar, & a private tarot reading with Maggie and Melissa Cynova in Chicago on May 5th! ]
If you're wondering how I got into that "weird stuff" (i.e. tarot), it was mostly a mix of being deeply involved in the yoga/mindfulness community on Instagram (which has overlap with spiritualist stuff like that) and just getting really interested in everything. Then I was gifted a set of tarot for Christmas (irony?) and have been trying to “learn” them ever since. I’m vastly enjoying this new hobby and love keeping a tarot journal as well as seeing when the cards’ “predictions” come true or they give very helpful/relevant advice.
I haven’t really made up my mind yet about how much I “believe” in tarot and crystals and things like that, but I’m not really sure it matters. I’m having fun with it and I love that shiver-up-my-spine feeling like I’m a bit closer to something supernatural. The Raven Boys has a lot to do with magic being real, at least in certain ways; the writer in me—and the child in me (who I hope never ever grows up)—loves the idea that this world is full of little, secret bits of magic. Whether it’s tarot and psychics, a lucky four leaf clover, feeling calmer when we touch a certain crystal, or something like that, I don’t have any desire to stop believing in those little bits of magic.
3. Personal Change
And at last, I have arrived at my final topic for this post: change. I annotated my The Raven Boys books when I first read them, and now I'm annotating them again (in a different color) and responding to 2-years-ago-me. It’s really interesting to think about where I was 2 years ago vs where I am now...and also a bit sad.
Two years ago I was on birth control for health issues—at the time, I didn’t know that I was homozygous for #MTHFR (which makes taking birth control really dangerous for me because of blood clotting). I also didn’t realize that I had severe depression, and that depression was caused by the birth control I was taking (loloestrin fe, if anyone’s curious). I felt numb, disconnected, and unfulfilled. I had gained 10 pounds (as a lot of women do on birth control) and felt terrible about that. The things that used to make me happy didn’t anymore. I rarely laughed, I didn’t enjoy time with my family—or anything, really. I wasn’t sad; I was just completely flat and numb. I started writing my novel and devoted myself to that. I wrote, I took up painting, and I did my schoolwork—that was really all.
Looking back now, I’m both really proud of the progress I’ve made, but also sad that 2-years-ago-me had so far to go. I’m no longer a “dark”/negative person and have made strides in terms of my health (including finding out about my MTHFR!). I’m very happy now—but it took about a year and a half after where 2-years-ago-me was, a lot of tears, even more hard work, and some very big struggles with depressive, anxiety, and a borderline eating disorders. I guess I’m just saying that I wish I could give 2-years-ago-me a hug and promise her that it will. All. Be. Worth. It.

49. What book has inspired you?
aw inspired is a serious word to throw around. the miseducation of cameron post, idk if it “inspired” me but it was my first lesbian novel and that really did a lot for me.
50. What book got you into reading?
i think it was a wrinkle in time! or maybe roald dahl books before that, but a wrinkle in time was definitely up there, and maybe the shadow thieves by anne ursu
i’m tagging @reading-takes-you-places and @mywomensworld and anyone who wants to! i don’t talk to many people here but if you follow me and want to, go for it!

Rereading The Raven Cycle and commenting on its use of Latin pt. 7 (contains spoilers, obviously)
Tumblr media
The Raven Boys, p. 314, fourth declension nouns
Gansey, shocked and rather unable to cope with being held at gunpoint by Whelk, reacts to the absurdity and the unexpectedness of the situation by thinking about how he handed in some homework on fourth declension nouns the last time he saw Whelk.
So, what are fourth declension nouns? You might be unaware of it, but having read The Raven Cycle you actually know a noun that belongs to the fourth declension, namely manus manus f. (or, as we encounter it in Blue Lily, Lily Blue manibus). That's the way nouns are usually written down: first the nominative, then the genitive and lastly, their grammatical gender. Studying Latin, you'll have to make a habit of remembering a word's genitive along with its nominative, because looking at the genitive, you can tell which declension it belongs to, and also how to further decline it.
In Latin, there are five declensions. Usually Latin learners start with the easiest ones, the A and O declension. When learning about the third declension, your horizon suddenly broadens significantly - that's where you are definitely faced with the fact that words belonging together in a sentence, which have the same case and grammatical gender, don't necessarily need to have identical endings. The fourth declension is rather similar to the third declension though. I'd say once you have mastered the third declension, the fourth seems pretty logical.
Finally, what did Gansey have to do for homework? Probably decline some fourth declension nouns, and perhaps an adjective belonging to another declension along with it (which is the sort of exercise I often used to do). It could look something like this:
singular
1. manus pulchra
2. manus pulchrae
3. manui pulchrae
4. manum pulchram
6. manu pulchra
plural
1. manus pulchrae
2. manuum pulchrarum
3. manibus pulchris
4. manus pulchras
6. manibus pulchris
(Which means pretty hand(s) - I was perhaps inspired by Ronan's peculiar obsession).
As you can see, none of the endings seem to match at first glance, which is one reason why Latin is such a fun language to learn 😂
Disclaimer: I only started to learn Latin a couple of months ago, so my knowledge of it is in no way all-encompassing. So if you find any mistakes in my ramblings, please do not hesitate to correct me – cheers!
(For page numbers, I use my heavily annotated (read: scribbled in) US paperback copies of The Raven Cycle series).

Rereading The Raven Cycle and commenting on its use of Latin pt. 4 (contains spoilers, obviously)

The Raven Boys, p. 215, animus
Adam invites Blue to come along on the boys’ search for the ley line. Since it’s Blue’s first time joining them, Gansey naturally can’t let the opportunity pass to tell her what he knows or suspects about the ley line and its effect on Glendower. He explains: “[...] there’s something about the line that fortifies or protects a corpse. The soul. The ... animus. The quiddity of it.”
Animus is an interesting Latin word, because it has such a wide range of meanings, which you couldn’t possibly hope to encompass in one single English word. First things first: The English word animus is often used in a negative way (see: animosity), but that’s not what the Latin word animus means. When I tried to think of English words that contain the Latin animus while keeping its original meaning, the adjective unanimous (and its noun unanimity) came to my mind, which (quite literally) means to be of one mind.
So, animus often refers to the mind or the intellect of a person. But perhaps more commonly, it describes whatever it is that gives a body life: its soul, its spirit, whatever you may want to call it. It seems logical then, that animus can also be used to refer to wherever a sentient being’s emotions come from: again, its spirit, or, as we often say figuratively, its heart. Animus is a term that can also express a wide variety of other intangible concepts, such as courage, will, temperament, character, purpose, feeling, sense, thought, consciousness, etc.
As you can probably gather from the above, animus is a word that is often rather hard to translate. You have to contemplate the context given, and then decide which translation you feel fits best. But no matter how carefully you consider your options, there might be nuances that are likely to be lost in translation. So basically, for Gansey to use the word animus to express what he means may sound pretentious (and as we are aware - and Adam occasionally points out - Gansey definitely can come across as pretentious), but it’s actually absolutely justified and well-founded.
Disclaimer: I only started to learn Latin a couple of months ago, so my knowledge of it is in no way all-encompassing. So if you find any mistakes in my ramblings, please do not hesitate to correct me – cheers!

Rereading The Raven Cycle and commenting on its use of Latin pt. 1 (contains spoilers, obviously)
Tumblr media
The Raven Boys, p.51 Excelsior
When the boys decide to go to Nino’s for some pizza, Gansey uses their catchphrase “Excelsior!”, which we encounter numerous times throughout the series, for the first time. Later in the book (p.390), he translates it for Blue as “onward and upward”. It is commonly translated as “ever upward”.
Excelsior is the comparative of excelsum, which in turn is the past participle of the verb excellere, which means to rise, to surpass.
There are of course several English words that derive from the Latin verb excellere, such as the commonly used adjective excellent or the verb to excel. However, you can also find lots of examples of excelsior being used in English. Places, schools, sports clubs - especially football clubs (for the Americans: soccer clubs), and even wood wool that is used as filling material are named Excelsior. It is also the late Stan Lee’s catchphrase, as well as the official motto of the state of New York. (e pluribus unum, meaning out of many, one was recently added as a secondary motto.)
As you can see, excelsior is an often used term, which just shows how present Latin still is today (needless to say, I’m one of those people who get highly offended when someone tells them that Latin is a dead language and therefore completely useless to learn, so I might be just a tad biased 🙈).

Disclaimer: I only started to learn Latin a couple of months ago, so my knowledge of it is in no way all-encompassing. So if you find any mistakes in my ramblings, please do not hesitate to correct me – cheers!
Also, here's an insightful post by @dicaxasinus on Ronan's Latin skills, which I first read before I had started learning Latin myself – I distinctly remember being desperately jealous of their knowledge of Latin.

Month in Review // The Month From Hell – March
This month has given me more breakdowns than I can count.
So maybe it’s not the single worst month I’ve ever lived but honestly, it’s pretty high up there!
Between a car accident, still going through the mess of changing names, pain, oh so much fucking pain, a new doctor who doesn’t know how to help me, and an altercation I wish to just forget, I’m just about ready to hide under my blankets and never leave my room.
Unfortunately, that’s not an option and so I am sitting at me desk at work writing this instead.
If you would like to buy any of the following books please consider using my Book Depository Affliate link!
         Month’s TBR

     Read
│The Surface Breaks│Lousie O’Neill│││││★★★★│Read Mar 13│
This book was so unapologetically feminist, I loved it.
│The Dream Thieves│The Raven Cycle #2│Maggie Stiefvater│││││★★★★★│Read Mar 25│
I think I jumped into this book too quickly after finishing the first so it took me a while to get through it but I got there eventually.
│Truly Devious│Truly Devious #1│Maureen Johnson│││││DNF Mar 22│
I don’t think fiction audiobooks are for me! at least not ones I haven’t already read. I’m switching to Non-Fic/memoirs and I’ll try rereading a fave eventually to see how I go with that.
│I’ve Got This Round│Mamrie hart││││
After realising ficiton audiobooks weren’t for me I needed a win so I returned Truly Devious for this because i love Mamrie and there’s no way I wouldn’t love this. I was right.
│Skylarks│Karen Gregory│││││
I’ve just been super invested in this one. I don’t know if it’s because i wasn’t reading it regularly since I normally read ARCs while I’m exercising…and I’ve not been exercising like at all this month. I don’t know. I’ll give it another go next month if I have time but otherwise it’ll probably be pushed back to May.
│Rad Girls Can│Kate Schatz│││││
I switched to this ARC since it’s only 112 pages and I figured SURELY I can finish this before the month is up. Nope. So April it is!
│Khutulun│tatterhood│Agnodice│Te Puea Herangi│Moremi Ajasoro│Sybil Ludington│Kurmanjan Datka│Andamana│Mary Seacole│Florence Nightingale│Gráinne “Grace O’Malley” Ni Mháille│Rejected Princesses│Jason Porath│││││
│Empress Xi Ling Shi│Hatsheput│Agnodice│Trung Trӑc & Trung Nhi│Fatima Al-Fihri│Bygone Badass Broads│Mackenzi Lee│││││
I didn’t do much but at least I got my entries read for both of these!
Book of the Month
│The Female of the Species│Mindy McGinnis││││││★★★★★│Read Mar 31│
Once I realised just how little I read this month and made myself power through this one and omg it was soooo good and worth it. I needed this book this month.
│Average Rating: 4.5★’s│ 5│
Structured TBR Pass or Fail?
│Must Read:  3/5│ 0/1│ 0/0│ 2/2│ 3/3│ 10/10│ 5/5│
│Allowances:  1/1│ 1/1│ 0/0│ 0/0│ 0/1│
Clearly this was a terrible reading month. I got hardly any reading done. I started off relatively strong but then I stopped exercising (for reasons I’ll go into further later in this post) so that was less time spent reading. And then I spent far more time watching TV when I should have been reading because Depression. And the audiobook wasn’t really working out for me so I didn’t get that read either. FUN.
     Haul
│Barbed Wire Heart│Tess Sharpe│││
I loved Far From You so when I saw this was available on Netgalley I knew I needed it! And it wasn’t even a request, just one you could immediately download and my international blogger heart is v. v. thankful.
│Vicious│Villains #1│V.E. Schwab││
│Vengeful│Villains #1│V.E. Schwab│││
If you’ve been paying attention to my hauls sections you’re probably thinking “doesn’t Grey already have both of these books and the answer to that is yes absolutely but listen.
I have the paperback copy of Vicious in the old cover art because i bought it years ago…Well my mum bought it for me years ago but same same.
Then it was announced that with the long-awaited release of Vengeful we’d get all new cover art so I knew I’d be re-buying the first no matter what.
And then the collector’s edition came out for Vicious.
So I bought that and then Book Depository listed the hardback for Vengeful as a collector’s edition and so I ordered that as a birthday present to myself.
Only I don’t actually think it is a collector’s edition because it doesn’t say so on the cover or anything but oh well.
So I finally have both books with new covers only I don’t want to read them because if I do, I’ll want to annotate them and I don’t annotate collector’s edition as a rule for myself.
So I had to buy the paperbacks. I just had to. My hands were tied. Did I really have the money to? No, but I’ve had a hard month so fuck it.

│RuPaul’s Drag Race│Season 11││2009│ RuPaul│RuPaul, Michelle Visage│Watching weekly episodes│★★★★★│
Between Miss Vanjie being the narrator of the season (and maybe my fave of all time), her hoemance with Brooke Lyn Heights, Yvie’s take no shit, own your shit attitude and Plastique’s fish???? I am in love with this season.
I could do without Silky’s obnoxious everything and R. Kelly style Untucked breakdowns but whatever.
│Russian Doll│Season 1││2019│  Leslye Headland, Natasha Lyonne, Amy Poehler│ Natasha Lyonne, Charlie Barnett, Greta Lee│★★★★★│
I am in love with Russian Doll and everything about it. It’s short, it’s smart, it’s quality TV and it’s fucking funny.
│Sex Education│Season 1││2019│ Laurie Nunn│ Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Emma Mackey│★★★★★│
This show is stupid funny but it’s also super intelligent and important. This is such a good show for teens to have easy access to and I can’t wait for the new season.
│Queer Eye│Season 3││2018│ Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France │★★★★★│
This season had me crying my eyes out and I loved every second of it.
But my favourite moment is when Jody, on the first episode, comes out for the big reveal and the guys all lose their fucking minds! Especially Karamo’s and Antoni’s reactions. They were absolutely fucking gold.
│Game of Thrones│Season 1││2011│ David Benioff, D.B. Weiss│ Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington│★★★★│
I mean, yes I am well aware of the problems Game of Thrones have and I am trash for it anyway. Is it as amazing as I initially thought?? Not at all but I’m in too deep now I can’t just not watch the final season.
So here I am re-watching the entire show with my mum to drag it out just a little longer and hopefully by the time we’re all caught up the final season, in it’s entirety, will be well and truly out.
I just have to try and avoid spoilers until then…which should actually be very easy because of something I’ll announce in my Month Ahead post.
Me after this month.

Considering how shit this month was I count 7/12 goals reached a fucking accomplishment!
My Nightmare Month
So it started well enough. I went to Writers Week on two different days and thoroughly enjoyed myself! but then i got into a car accident on the way to my third day.
Which was stressful and anxiety inducing. It’s been a nightmare to work through all the aftermath. I didn’t know if the accident would be covered by insurance or if I would even hear from the person who hit me. And then when I did get the good news of being covered I basically had to micromanage the insurance company because they did everything slow and I couldn’t afford slow. So that was loads of phone calls which is something that causes me anxiety so YAY.
It’s mostly all sorted out. I still need to take my plates in and get a refund on my rego which I tried to do a couple days ago and got frustrated so that’s a task for another day.
I did get to go to the Fringe Festival and see Daniel Sloss’s new comedy special which was absolutely brilliant! He talked about rape culture and really put the onus on men and how they need to work and go out of their way to think critically of themselves and society and what they can do to dismantle rape culture. I laughed and sobbed. My mum nearly pissed herself laughing and it was a great night out with to die for Sri-Lankan food hot buttered squid will blow your fucking mind! and I discovered that I like to drink Pimms.
Throughout the month I’ve still been sorting out my name change because that is a long and drawn out process of changing my name everywhere and hitting road blocks constantly has be incredibly frustrating but I’m nearly finished!
I have also been doing all of this while in incredible pain because chronic illness.
My March mood
Basically my feet have been very painful, I knew the solution, doctor refused me, mum took me to a doctor who knows our history and I got the solution so I can actually start walking regularly again which will help my mental health loads.
My mum also took me to replace all of my shoes which was both expensive and needed so I have the best shoes for walking and working and running around doing errands and going out!
I was ready to end the month on a positive. Sure the start had rattled me a lot, and I was big depressed because of pain for most of it but I did have a few great experiences and I’d resolved almost all the long running issues.
And then while I was waiting for mum to finish work a couple of days ago, I sat and read in the foodcourt.
A man approached me and invaded my personal space and stared at me, knowing it would make me uncomfortable, so uncomfortable that it distracted me from the fact he was trying to steal my purse.
Thankfully I noticed at the last minute and grabbed it back because I would have been a fucking mess if I had gone to all the trouble replacing everything in my purse with my new name on it, only to have to do it all over again because someone stole my it all.
The man walked off but I would be lying if I said it didn’t terrify me. The way he stared at me was so unnerving and I don’t handle people being in my personal space…like at all. Even people I know and trust have to always ask permission first. I don’t let men I know in my personal space at all because I know what men are capable of. But to have a man I don’t know get in my face with the purpose to make me uncomfortable, especially after the month I’ve had, was enough for me to completely come undone.
I’m thankful for the cleaner for checking up on me, even though I burst into tears, and I’m thankful for the girl who approached me after as well to try and be supportive.
She had fire in her eyes and in that moment I had wished that that was what I looked like instead of the girl I was, not being able to hold back tears and trying to keep calm in the middle of an anxiety attack.
More than anything, I’m thankful for my mum for being so supportive and understanding and being exactly what I needed her to be and for calling out the men who made things worse, while trying to help, when I didn’t have the strength to.
I’ve argued with myself on whether to share this and maybe I might delete it all before it gets published, but I think it’s important for women to share their experiences with how men have preyed upon them, whether sexually or not, and how men continue to use their power to get what they want from us, regardless of the negative impact it has on us.
I just—girls, women, know that if something like this happens to you, if something worse happens to you, it’s not your fault, it’s never your fault. The way you react to it is right because it’s your experience and your emotions. I’m trying to remind myself of that.
And men, know that if you’re not actively trying to stop this shit from happening, aren’t pulling your friends up for those gross comments they make, then you’re part of the fucking problem. I don’t want to hear that you personally would never do this. That shit isn’t enough. It’s never been enough. This all lies at your feet and fuck you for helping to hold up a society that makes us think any of it is our own fault.
And if something like this happens to a girl or woman you know then ask her what she needs, ask her the best way for you to help. Because nine times out of ten the way you react naturally is going to be the complete fucking opposite of what she needs and you might make things worse. And that’s on you, not her.
