Okay there’s a lot about Mikio asking Mizu to show him all of herself and then rejecting her but like. “Unsheathe it. Show me your blade.” This from Mizu, who fully believes the whole “the sword is the soul of the samurai” thing, basically asking the same of Mikio. Show me your blade; show me your soul; show me who you are. And she even throws him her sword, because she is truly giving him all of herself in this scene, and she wants the same of him. Honesty. Openness. Truth. And ultimately he does show her who he is, and it fucks them, because who he is is a man who cannot handle her as she really is. Unsheathing their blades ruins them, because it uncovers the truth: they were never compatible, not as who they really are. It was always a lie, a performance; a pretty dream that cannot withstand the light of day

[ID: Two panels from Dungeon Meshi. The first scows Senshi clutching his face as tears start to spill out of his eyes, saying, "I've always... always wanted to have this soup one more time." He's not wearing his helmet in this panel, so his face is unusually visible, detailed and vulnerable. The second panel shows himself as a youngster, surrounded by his old mining team, all smiling at each other, one of them rubbing Senshi's head. Modern-day Senshi continues, "Thank you. All of you. Thank you." End ID.]
Holy shit. I anticipated some tragic backstory from the "I must feed the young ones" panels, but what I'd guessed was that Senshi might have become so devoted to cooking and eating literally whatever because he'd previously survived a famine and had seen children starve to death. I did not expect him to have been the child who was the sole survivor of a doomed travel party, one of whom was determined to feed Senshi first because he was the youngest, and that Senshi has lived with the fear of having inadvertently committed cannibalism by eating stew that he'd never quite known the contents of. I'm happy for him that Laios deduced and confirmed for him that it was griffin meat, that he was able to taste the meal that saved his life once more and remember the friends he lost. Seriously, I'm crying, and also earnestly relieved that while his backstory is pretty dark, it's not the type of fucked up I'd been preparing myself mentally for.
#Dungeon Meshi#Delicious in Dungeon#Dunmeshi#though it IS really worth exploring the ethics of cannibalism in survival situations#The podcast You're Wrong About has a really interesting pairing of episodes#in the Donner Party and Flight 571 Crash episodes#Both about disasters in which people wound up eating their dead to survive#and an interesting connection they drew was that it wasn't the cannibalism itself#that destroyed the lives of the Donner survivors#it was the horror and disgust and societal rejection they got for having eaten human flesh#even the children who had no idea what they were eating were treated with revulsion#and this is clearly the response Senshi feared facing if anybody knew what he'd eaten#But Flight 571 like a century later#the survivors were faced with a lot of understanding when rescued#relatively little condemnation and revulsion#by and large commentators acknowledged that they did what they had to do#and sympathized with how difficult and painful it must have been#which is what Senshi gets from his party#Laios wants to figure out the truth because he knows it's hurting Senshi not to know#But at one point Marcille straight up says that none of them would think less of Senshi if he did eat dwarf stew#Okay so this is Marcille 'ardent student of blood magic' Donato#but Chilchuck agrees#anyway I think that would be a particularly interesting conversation to have in a cooking manga#how do you safely eat a dead friend when that's all you have to survive on?#what are the nutritional benefits other than 'better than starving'?#what are the risks? There's prion diseases and all sorts you can get#they write it off as eating the dragon part but they DO spend seven days eating Falin at the end#ARE there any in/famous cannibalism cases in this world?#Do peopel argue about whether or not it's cannibalism if a dwarf eats a tallman?#enquiring minds (mine) want to know

“Jason should get over being upset about his death” - he has, he wasn’t angry at Bruce or the world because they failed him and he ended up dying, which he made clear plain as day and that’s about the most reasonable a person who went through what he went through could be
anyway I don’t think these people realize how gory being bludgeoned to near death is, and maybe it's because of the limitations of the medium that scene was presented in
#not to mention he had to process the added heartbreak of his birth mother’s rejection/betrayal at the same time#like yeah he was cocky and smiling in the uth movie go Jason go but that’s also the same movie that drastically changed the context#and tone of that scene by erasing Sheila#kelseethe#I remember the first time reading aditf I got flashbacks to a Korean horror movie that still puts me in a weird place#anyway it was about a serial killer who went around killing people by beating their skulls in with a hammer#one of the plots was centered around a victim who didn’t die after the first attack and even managed to escape at first#long story short she was running around trying to get help and the cops were useless + he ended up finding her again and finished the job#sfx brains skull blood and viscera everywhere#and that’s exactly what happened to Jason you just didn’t see any gore because it’s an American comic#nor did you hear his screams and the sounds from metal making contact with bone and guts#and like I said the uth movie was pretty sanitized too same for the titans show which also downplayed his death lol#anyway I think it’s really forgiving of Jason not to blame Bruce or anyone else for the fact that they let the circumstances lead to that#and to instead only criticize how nothing was done in the aftermath#Idk I always found it a bit fascinating how it doesn’t seem to have dawned on most people including his fans#exactly how violent that experience was

missa, after his self resentment and lamenting about how he doesn’t feel worthy or like he should be accepted, after telling himself and the capybaras that he doesn’t have a home, not really - after all is said and done, he returns to phil & missa, leaving his mini mi in the house on the wall. as if he’d consider anywhere other than the house he shared with phil safe enough. seeking out safety and home brought him right back where he started.
something about how despite his internal conflicts and issues about what he thinks he deserves, he’ll still come back. and for all he worries that he is not enough to be loved in return, his name is still on the warp stone.

What if… one day, us and Legacy/Childe have such rough days that we decide to go out to alleviate ourselves…
By going onto the most secluded hilltop and just yelling, letting out shrieks or battle cries to get all the pent up yuck out of us. The harbor will definitely be on high alert when they hear Legacy’s unholy roar, tho.
But on the plus side, we fall asleep on said hill after watching the sun set :3
god sometimes i wish that could be me
you both know from just a look that the other had an absolutely horrid day, you from your tense shoulders and rumpled clothes and Foul Legacy from the way his claws grip at the couch and how his usual chirps come out more like soft growls. on those days you simply glance at each other when you arrive home, before silently putting down your things and heading right back out the door. you don't even bother climbing the mountain, Legacy simply picks you up and spreads his wings, flying you to the highest cliffside he can find and settling down next to you. for a moment, everything is quite as the breeze ruffles your jacket and his hair and fluff
then you both scream as loudly as you can
well, Foul Legacy's is more of a guttural shriek, one that would terrify you to your bones if you didn't know it belonged to the same monster who likes burrowing under blankets and gets frightened by thunderstorms. your own shout is nothing to be sneered at either, letting out all your stress and anger and frustration from the past day until your vocal cords are spent and your voice is hoarse. only when you can't physically speak anymore do you flop down beside Foul Legacy, breathing hard. he lets out a quiet, whispering trill and rests his head on your lap, the only thing left in both of you being exhaustion and relief as you fall backwards onto the grass, staring up at the night sky. Legacy's claws knead sleepily at your legs, the motions gradually slowing as he drops off to sleep with an exhausted purr; you follow suit not even a few minutes later, your eyes fluttering shut for the first restful night you've had in a week
the next morning you wake up to a very concerned Zhongli standing over you before he launches into an hour-long lecture about the whole city heard your screams the night before and was panicking about being attacked by some beast

Your last Devil’s Bastards post was so juicy! I’d never heard about heaven’s people having amnesia.
Now I can’t stop thinking about a pre-reveal scenario in which Nicaise somehow goes to visit the hotel and while she doesn’t recognize anyone, Alastor and Lucifer sure recognize her.
Hey, it could happen! I did set the stage for Nicaise to potentially become a fallen angel, no second death required.
Let's say it happens at some point after the thwarted extermination. Neither Lucifer nor Alastor know yet, but Alastor has some suspicions. When Nicaise is ejected from Heaven for revealing the exterminations to the public, encouraging people to go against Heaven's rules, and questioning the Seraphim, and then refusing to repent, she remembers Charlie Morningstar's hotel and heads there straight away.
Charlie's happy to see her again. Both Lucifer and Alastor are in shock, but since Alastor's perma-smile is still in place no one really notices his reaction. They're all a little wrapped up in the story Nicaise is telling them about how she ended up getting ejected from Heaven. Of course Charlie happily welcomes her into the hotel, and Vaggie's actually happy to have yet another fallen angel among them, to hear that Heaven may actually be reforming from within.
Then Lucifer steps forward and reintroduces himself. Everyone's more than a little surprised to learn that Lucifer and Nicaise have met before. Lucifer explains that whence upon a time he snuck out of Hell just for a little while to actually see Earth, and wound up lost in the middle of New Orleans during the Rex parade. Nicaise doesn't remember the event, so he tells her about how she saved him from being lost and basically acted as his guide throughout the celebration. They both got pretty wasted and he woke up the next morning passed out on top of somebody's rooftop, presumably from attempting to fly home while drunk. Everyone's laughing and having a good time as he recounts the story.
Alastor says nothing.
As Nicaise settles into the hotel crew and helps Charlie with her redemption project, Alastor initially tries to keep his distance, but over time everyone notices that Alastor is different with her. It's not too strange at first. He's always gotten along better with women than with men. But this is different. He almost has an air of respect with her, and he doesn't even respect the King of Hell! He's gentle, he never teases or intentionally scares her, though it turns out Nicaise has a bit of a prankster side of her own and thinks its funny when he spooks other hotel residents. He doesn't hide the fact that he's a serial murderer, or that he's a cannibal, but he does tone down the bloodthirstiness in her presence. His smile is more genuine around her.
Bit by bit, certain things come out about Alastor, more in the few short weeks Nicaise has been with them than anyone's learned in the 6+ months of living with Alastor. Things he and Nicaise share in common. They both grew up in New Orleans, they like to use venison in their jambalaya, play several of the same instruments, have the same taste in liquor, hate tea. They even died within a couple decades of one another. Nicaise wonders if they might have even met one another while alive. Alastor only says he supposes it's possible.
Lucifer, for his part, is delighted to reunite with an old friend. Alastor does not enjoy Lucifer enjoying her company. He compels Husk to interrupt the two of them if he ever sees them getting too 'close.' Encourages Niffty to get under Lucifer's feet. Has his shadows trip Lucifer up, or spill his drinks when he's talking with Nicaise. Lucifer knows it's all Alastor's doing and assumes Alastor's just being a shit again.
"What, you failed to steal my daughter, now you're trying to steal my vacation friend!?"
Husk is the first one to put two and two together. He doesn't figure out everything, but he knows Alastor well enough to know his interest in Nicaise isn't romantic, and to pick up on the familial similarities. He keeps his mouth shut though. The memory of what happened last time he dredged up one of Alastor's secrets still sets his fur on edge. Still, in private he lets himself chuckle over the fact that Alastor is a 'mamma's boy.'
Eventually though, other people start to pick up on Alastor's weird behavior. When Nicaise scolds him for 'picking on' Lucifer - and WOW is it weird to see Alastor letting himself be scolded - Alastor points out to her that Lucifer is a married man. That does put a bit of a damper on Lucifer's and Nicaise's interactions. They weren't intentionally flirting or anything, but Lucifer wonders if maybe he was getting a tad too comfortable. He and Lilith ARE separated (at least, according to Charlie) but he still hopes to one day reconcile with her. And now that Alastor's brought it to her attention, Charlie's starting to feel just a tad uncomfortable with Lucifer's and Nicaise's closeness as well. Just a tad though! She does want her dad to be happy, and he and Lilith are separated...
Privately, she still thinks it feels like a betrayal though.
And it's that feeling that allows Charlie to put things together, and she's a hell of a lot less subtle than Husk is.
There are people hanging out at the bar when she walks up to Alastor in the parlor and blurts out, "ALASTOR, IS NICAISE YOUR SISTER!?"
It came out a lot louder than she meant it.
Lucifer chokes on his drink.
In Charlie's defense, he and Nicaise appear to be close to the same physical age in their demon and angel forms. If anything, Nicaise might have been younger when she died than Alastor was when he died.
Alastor reassures Charlie that, no, Nicaise is not his sister.
Lucifer relaxes and starts to chug his drink to get that terrifying thought out of his head.
"She's my maman."
Lucifer chokes again.
Fortunately Nicaise isn't present for this conversation. Charlie asks why Alastor hadn't said anything before now and he explains he doesn't see any reason to. Once they get her back into Heaven, they'll never see one another again, so why burden her with the knowledge that her son grew to be a mass murderer in life and a cannibalistic Overlord in death? While he may not regret any of his actions, he knows she would be heartbroken by the revelation.
Angel Dust breaks up the sullen mood that's fallen over the room by cracking a joke that, 'the devil wants to do your mom.'
He immediately gets several sets of angry eyes on him, including beast mode Alastor, and shuts up very quickly.

Fic idea: a few years down the line, a married Steve and Robin run into a married Tommy and Carol. They go out to dinner together on a double date for Steve to catch up with his old friends.
The catch? Tommy and Carol are just as platonically married as Steve and Robin are, but no one wants to be the first one to break the act since they don't know about the other couple. They're all naturally touchy with each other, but they're playing it up, making up elaborate backstories for their love and trying to win the friendship breakup between Steve and TommyCarol and it gets increasingly ridiculous.
The "date" finally ends with them realizing that no one at the table is actually romantically involved, which leads to lots of excited/confused screaming and gets them kicked out of the restaurant. They end up sitting in a gas station parking lot (because circles) in the middle of the night, sharing cigarettes and slowly repairing the cracks they put in each other years ago.
From then on, Steve and Robin have a "couple" friend that they love to go to events with.

Interesting thing about the Big Dipper is it’s part of a larger constellation, Ursa Major, and the Little Dipper is Ursa Minor. The moles on the Yoshiki face are like the moles on his dad’s except his dad has more. Just kind of further visually connecting Yoshiki to his father with constellations.

my favourite part of Death Note is that it's an excellent critique of how ridiculous and horrible police/policing ideology/punitive justice is when taken to its natural conclusion/extreme, but the old man writing it absolutely did not have that in mind -- as evidenced by the fact that he had the Good Normal Police take down This Unhinged Freak Who Thinks We Should Kill Criminals (tho tbf I do think it's a pointed critique of the death penalty - "it's still murder even if they're death row criminals" like it's not spelled out but it's pretty obvious the death penalty is murder too then. But the author kinda gives up on acknowledging the normal "justice" system isn't aren't 100% prefect by the end). like I'm not 100% certain but I do think Light's dad was just made a policeman for plot convenience & possibly to explain why criminals take up so much space in Light's head, not because the Kira's ideology could only be developed by the child of a cop. (L would have used that as evidence it was the case.) Also the author said Mr. Cop Father is good.

Nothing from what I've learnt this morning is true, I'm gonna cuddle up with my cats and stay in bed all day and daydream about everyone being alive and happy
#jjk#jjk leaks#jjk 236#the most cruel thing of all is that gojo never got to claim the happiness of his youth back#all he ever knew in his life was being the strongest and fighting#gege goes around saying things like what gojo truly lacks is the sense of self#meanwhile gojo was othered throughout his entire life for what he is#he was slaughtered for what he is#he was sealed for what he is#he was left fighting alone because of what he is#gojo coveted change but he himself remains a static symbol etched into the narrative#and now he dies and his death is nothing but a symbol a cautionary tale for others to derive meaning from#at the end of the day gojo is a case study of a romantic hero archetype#he rejects established conventions because they suffocate him as much as his strength does only to be rejected by his society in return#he is the center of his own existence but still carries ideology which has others placed at its core#and he dies for his ideal forever estranged from the world he's put in#and it is all in vain#and it is the cruelest thing of all#and it can't be true it's not true it's not true it's not true it's not true#i need to go scream in the woods#me: it's devastating and terrible and makes me feel sick. i'm emotionally overwhelmed and would not be prepared to talk about it for weeks#my brain: okay but what if we analyze it–#apparently my coping machanism is compartmentalizing#the narrative never pretended to care about gojo as a person his character introduces a body of meaning and that's it#and it's how it's supposed to be honestly since he's not the main character he adds to the narrative but he isn't supposed to drive it#but it still aches so bad#he dies so that his ideal can live on he is not a person he is a narrative's symbol and this is as far as objectification can go

I am 100 percent with you on preferring the JP line in that cutscene if only because it does feel more powerful (and his voice is SO soft, which is something that frequently gets completely lost in the dub in general. Mamoru carries a much softer tone overall for Flynn, similar to how Yuri's playfulness and carefree vibe got lost in favor of the dub's aim for a more "cool adult guy").
That said, I was not even aware they left the whistle out!!! I haven't bothered with that sidequest because the outfit is readily available for free as DLC.
While I enjoy having Flynn present in the last battle, I wish they'd just had him look back up at the sky and say that right next to Yuri right before the very end of the cutscene (since imo that'd be the best placement for it). No reason not to stick that back in!!!
But removing the whistle is just an outright crime and I am owed a fee from the people who decided that for the devastation I've been inflicted with.
Big same 🤝
I used to be such a fan of the eng dub but tbh ever since I experienced the original japanese (back when we still called it the PS3 Version lol) I never looked back. The wording is so, so, SO much more layered and leaves little room to misinterpret subtleties and subtext. Like you, I've had many gripes about the localization because sometimes they just plain insert stuff that was never there in the first place - iirc Troy Baker admited that apparently they rushed the dub so hard, sometimes the voice actors themselves were asked to chip in for the translation...he said he loved that (I'll bet), but that might explain why so much of the OG english script was already full of weird phrasings and insertions...add to that the even more sloppy and lazy DE localization and you get only half of the richness of the original japanese.
Also yes Mamo and Tori *are* Flynn and Yuri more than anybody ever could be. Sam and Troy do a good enough job but I agree that Troy may have been directed to play Yuri closer to a traditional "cool bad boy", which is hilarious given how the original Yuri is a twist on that very trope. Unfortunately, Troy gave him this uncharacteristically cold/aggressive edge whenever he talks to Flynn that it makes it sound like he's always annoyed to see him, and it strips their relationship of so much of the softness and playfulness that Tori lends Yuri.
Anyway enough about me ranting because I could go on for about 10 more hours about this issue lmao. Honestly yeah they very well could've rearranged Flynn's cutscene to fit in there at the end, like hell if you can change the entire camera angles of whole scenes you can change that one background, no?? Knowing Tomizawa though that might have been more effort than he was willing to grant this remaster - won't be his last time.
Same for the wolf whistling!! They replaced it with a skit that is just as funny...
youtube
....but void of the insane flirting the original had. Idek why they went so far as to change it, it would've been less work to just leave it as it was 😭
#sorry for the length i just will never be able to shut up abt the translation#theres so much wrong with it#and when i say 'so much' i dont mean 'huge things' i mean 'a million tiny things that end up becoming huge in the big picture'#the most eggregious mistranslations to me were the ones where they shoehorned heterosexuality where there was none to begin with#like inserting estelle in sentences from yuri when she wasnt even in the original jp line#i know jpn loves to play w/ the implicit & the context but when yuri says to repede 'its gonna be lonely now huh' after the party separated#then he does not mean 'its gonna be lonely *without estelle in particular*' he means *without everyone* because he got used to them#and yet the tl makes it only abt her#or#the most unforgivable mistranslation of all to me#when they turned yuris response to estelle's 'id love to keep travelling with you' just before tarqaron from 'thanks same here'#to 'i feel the same way'#like ?????#that changes the ENTIRE conversation BECAUSE its all about the subtext#like it or not (and i hate it) but estelle does have some bodyguard crush on yuri there and this is the way she chooses to 'confess'#you can tell just by the way the scene plays out & how much it lingers on yuris very careful pokerface bc he has very clearly Understood#and yet does not reciprocate so he's being very careful what his next words will be so she Gets The Memo without having to hurt her feelings#and it works!! because iirc she does drop her head and nod a little as if she did get it and accepted what that he basically rejected her#so this isnt JUST some unimportant line#ITS VERY MUCH THEN MOMENT HE SAYS THANKS BUT NO THANKS#SO TRANSLATING THAT WITH 'I FEEL THE SAME' MAKES ZERO SENSE AS IT JUST DESTROYS THE ORIGINAL MEANING BY TURNING IT INTO ITS ENTIRE OPPOSITE#sorry im getting heated abt this again i just#f#even the scenario book interviews confirm that and put emphasis on it so this isnt just me reading too much into it for The Yaoiz#*thats* the subtlety vesperia deals with all the time and *thats* the subtlety the eng tl keeps chipping away at#i know the translators most likely had little direction to go off of so this isnt to dunk on them#more like the complete lack of communication between loc departements and the heteronornativity they resort to when in doubt#hell even higuchi agreed when i addressed this on twitter with him#dude knows#ANYWAY TUMBLR SAID IM EXCEEDING THE TAG LIMIT LMAO sorry for the huge rant i just. have feelings abt tov's loc
