Casually lurking in Sailor Moon fandom and when I see posts mentioning the Shitennou's knightly titles, I think the translation are off. I don't know if those are just fansubs being wonky, or if even the official ones are not entirely correct...
I've also seen some posts say that "I don't understand what these means". The knightly titles are based on the image and properties associated with each gemstone in Japanese (so, if it has different meanings internationally, it's quite beside the point).
Jadeite: Knight of Resilience 忍耐 and Harmony 調和
忍耐 is often translated as "Patience" in fanworks. 忍耐 is better translated as "resilience", "perseverance", or "endurance". Even when colloquially used to say "be patient", the connotation of it is more along the lines of "endure this". The Harmony one is correct.
"Resilience" is because jadeite jade is the harder jade. "Harmony" because of its traditional usage in spiritual matters, so jade in general has the image of "peacefulness".
Nephrite: Knight of Wisdom 知 and Peace 安らぎ
This one makes me kind of laugh because of what Nephrite is like as a character/person. I almost always see 知恵 translated as "Intelligence". It's not wrong per se, but this term here refers to something deeper than just brain smarts, thus "wisdom". Things like wisdom that come from age, or innate perceptiveness, and so on.
安らぎ is peace, as in "inner peace". Basically, "serenity", though it's probably not a good idea to use this word in Sailor Moon for obvious reasons.
Nephrite being the native jade of China, it has been given very sagely meaning to it that persist even in Japanese symbolism. That's why it's like this, for somewhat similar reasons to jadeite's "harmony".
Kunzite: Knight of Virtue 純潔 and Benevolence 慈愛
純潔 can also mean Purity or Chastity. 慈愛 is sometimes translated as Affection, which is also not entirely wrong. It's just that the standard meaning is benevolence or mercy. "Affection" tends to be used in the context of parents and children. In this context probably not the best meaning to use.
This gemstone is associated with the Holy Mother Mary, of all things, that's why it's got very saintly imagery associated with it.
Zoisite: Knight of Purification 浄化 and Healing 癒し
The most straightforward one so I've never seen any wonky translation with this one. Those who are into healing crystals might already know this, but this title is based on the healing and purification qualities that a blue zoisite/tanzanite supposedly have.

Is there anything you think the 90s did better then the original manga?
Oh yeah, a ton. I prefer the 90's anime to the manga overall. The manga was pretty bare bones, though I think the manga does have it's strengths, I'm not like super anti-manga or think it's all garbage like some of my friends. It was the foundation for the anime, I think there are reasons why it was the way it was (a lot of them being crushing deadlines) and a couple of really interesting ideas it had I wish the 90s anime had fleshed out. (PGSM, notably, did flesh out some of those ideas--like Rei and Makoto's backstories--and it was really good).
I've talked about it before, but Haruka and Michiru wouldn't have been such icons and so important to queer fans if we only had the manga--the anime fleshed out their relationship, fleshed out their characters, and importantly, never had Haruka inexplicably suprise kiss Usagi, thus cheating on Michiru and never addressing what that means for their relationship. I just generally prefer their characters and how they were handled way more in the 90s anime. Michiru in particular was pretty done dirty by the manga, while she's wonderfully complex in the anime.
The anime also fleshed out the other girls and put emphasis on their friendships way more than the manga, which I heavily prefer. I'm not one of those people who's going to complain Mamoru was "shafted" by the anime, I prefer the relationship with the girls, who often had absolutely nothing to do in the manga and got captured over and over again. The manga was very focused on Usagi (and Mamoru and Chibiusa) above all else.
(I will say though, that the manga treated Usagi and Mamoru more as a passionate relationship between equals while the anime was often "ugh usagi is sooo childish and unreasonable and jealous and Mamoru is the Reasonable Man who has to put up with her, women amiright" you can kind of tell which one was written by a woman vs a man. doesn't help that the anime worsened their age gap.)
The anime also added a lot of the humor and fun we associate with Sailor Moon, and got to make the villains memorable in their own right--see the anime's version of professor Tomoe, Kunzite and Zoisite, so on. It added a lot of queer stuff too (some good like Kunzite and Zoisite, some pretty problematic and bad like Fish Eye).
Overall, Sailor Moon wouldn't be what it is in our hearts without the 90s anime, and I think it's the default for a lot of people (myself included) for a reason.

Brief summary of the different versions of Mamoru Chiba:
Because I have brainrot
Mamoru: Crystal/Manga
16-18 year old high school student. Later enters college.
Often reading a book with like 3 more in his other hand or next to him.
Searching for Silver Crystal to remember who he is
Kinda a loner
Takes the bus to and from school.
Loves kids especially Chibiusa
SOS whenever he encountered Usagi he would comment on her studying.
Very studious himself
Little confidence in his abilities especially when it comes to protecting Usagi

Basically Mamoru in a Tuxedo, mask and cape.
Dissapears like Batman sometimes
Actually doesn't wear his hat or mask too often
Often forced to fight Sailor Moon against his will.
Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber
Fell for Sailor Moon real quick
"My life means nothing if I can't use it to help you Usako"
Tumblr media
Endo/Brainwashed Mamoru: Crystal/manga
Revived by Metalia because he was fricken dead
Only focused on getting the Legendary Silver Crystal
Was also tasked with killing Sailor Moon
Doesn't recognize or care about Usagi or the senshi
Throws Luna across the room

Ugly clothes
Tumblr media
Mamoru: 90s anime
18 or something college student
Basically the hot and dreamy guy
Motoki's best friend
Insults Usagi and gets into fights with her but actually enjoys talking to her
Not aware he's Tuxedo Mask at SOS

Like a totally different person from Mamoru
Fights with a cane
Enters with signature theme song
Different entrance each time
Always saves Sailor Moon at the right time
Usually the one who tells Sailor Moon when to finish off the enemy
Walking meme
Tumblr media
Dark Prince Endymion: 90's anime
A total douche
Brainwashed by Queen Beryl but just does things however the hell he wants
Flirts with Sailor Moon
Doesn't recognize Usagi
The only thing he knows is being Prince Endymion
Going after the rainbow crystals
Black turtle neck and sunglasses
Black roses
No powers. Just uses his palms and a sword.
Also transforms into Tuxedo Mask
Tumblr media
Prince Endymion:
Pretty much the same in all versions.
90s throws roses and wears the Tuxedo Mask attire
Protective of Serenity
Ally to the Silver Millenium when the Earth's people attack
Very affectionate to Serenity
Sacrifices himself to save Serenity's life
Tumblr media
I did this because I wanted to give appreciation to all sides of Mamoru Chiba. For as much as I may criticize the 90s anime, that Mamoru is equally as likeable and charming as manga/crystal. Plus manga Mamo isn't perfect either. Cuz where 90s Mamo is a little cold to Usa sometimes and doesn't always make the best decisions, Manga Mamo has incredibly low self esteem and keeps things from Usa so she isn't worried. They've both got their strengths and weaknesses!
TLDR: I love Mamoru Chiba a totally normal amount.

your headcanon about Sailor Venus being the reason the Silver Millennium falls is so interesting!
what's the role of Metalia and Beryl in it? did they work together with Sailor Venus?
Thank you!
I actually don’t really consider Metalia when I think about SilMil and the Dark Kingdom, if i do implement her, she’s usually more of a ‘force’ rather than an entity per se, but to answer your question, not really.
Silmil Venus wants to cause the downfall of the Silver Millennium, but she has no means or interest to interact with the Earth colony. She’s very aware of the multiple rebellions and surges, but it’s more like she uses them to her advantage rather than fully cooperate with anyone. Her main means of manipulation are through the Princess and even the Queen herself, pushing the Queen to take the Earth threats more seriously and thus causing further dismay and desperation upon the people of Earth, accelerating the possible tipping point that could finally cause a full on War. While also keeping secret of the more delicate aspects of the rebellion, such as infiltrators. She knows exactly who’s planning to turn their backs on the Kingdom, but since it highly benefits her, she keeps it a secret.
As for Beryl, Beryl has so much potential, she genuinely has and I do plan on exploring aspects of her character in my version of Silmil. To start she’s not just a random maiden (or witch for some reason), she’s a part of a highly secretive rebellion group against Moon kingdom, who’s goal is to free Earth and its people from the ruthless dictatorship of Serenity. This group includes tons of different people, sort of like a spy network, but at its core it’s composed of Beryl herself, Kunzite, Zoisite, Nephrite, Jadeite, Thetis, Enymion and .. Luna. (If someone is more curious about this one shoot an ask and I’ll explain further, but i rlly wanna focus on Beryl in this).
Beryl’s goals are to infiltrate the Moon Kingdom, steal and shatter the silver Crystal, being aware that that crystal is the center of all power for Serenity and the other Senshi. This information being gathered by Luna and also by a mysterious voice who offers her guidance.
A lot of how exactly the Moon Kingdom falls is still in the writing works, but I basically see Queen Serenity finding out about Luna, executing her and launching what is by all means a missile attack to Earth, destroying and killing thousands of people in the villages where Beryl and the knights reside. This hatred within Beryl causes the mysterious voice to fully come forth and offer her a power in exchange for Queen Serenity’s life, she takes it and a full on attack on the Moon starts. The Queen is obviously taken aback, but she’s also very old and much weaker than she used to be, so she leaves most of the work on Venus. Venus takes it willingly and kills all of the other senshi behind closed doors (which at this point is only Mercury, Jupiter and Mars), looking to find the princess next.
Beryl and the Queen have a one to one, where the queen becomes more and more aware that she’s not making it out alive and at this point she’s not putting much of a fight, it’s the inevitable end of a cycle and her time was about to come soon anyways. The Queen is old and tired, the empire is falling, but a new ruler is going to be reborn regardless and she will start a new empire. She accepts death and lets herself be killed by Beryl. In the meantime Endymion is looking for Serenity, but Venus gets to him first and kills him. When Serenity finds her way to her deceased lover, Venus lies, like she always does, saying he was killed in battle, along with the rest of her guardians and her mother.
By means I still haven’t fully figured out (I will find a way for it to make sense, I’m so determined!) Venus sword has the power to reawaken a soul lying dormant within a reincarnated body if the previous reincarnation was killed by said blade, so she proposes to let Serenity be killed by her so that hers and Serenity’s souls will live on into the next life and will eventually be able to fully reawaken and take over their reincarnated selves. It will be their new life, where Serenity will be able to live happily ever after with her beloved prince, free from the shackles of the will of her mother and any responsibility to have to govern any empire. Serenity accepts and lets her ‘dearest of friends’ Venus kill her. With a smile on her face Venus points the sword toward herself, knowing she will live on, free from the queen and finally being able to kill her princess before she’s able to enslave her again in her next life.
Beryl and the kings return victorious to Earth and live relatively regular lives after that. Skip to the time where the senshi are starting to get reborn and the mysterious voice reaches out for the souls of Beryl and the other kings and Endymion, their job is not done and they must stop the new princess and her guardians from rebuilding a new Empire in the current timeline.
A lot of this is still in the writing works, so stuff might change, but this is more or less how I see the fall of the Moon Kigdom and Beryl’s involvement in it. She’s sort of like the live long enough to see yourself become the villain trope, she was the hero all those years ago, she’s just blinded by rage and power fueled by this mysterious voice.

Trick or Treat
Last time on #mamoru in college, Mamoru was attempting to broker peace between his living friends and his dead ones. Having successfully smoothed things over, they are now all embarking on a Halloween bar crawl.
Roomie: So, uh, would it be rude to ask what happened the first time you and Chiba— Kunzite: Yes. Roomie: Right. Zoisite: It's an eternal sore spot for him, but don't worry. Things are fine now. Kunzite: Except that we're walking around in public with sheets over our heads like idiots. Nephrite: He never could refuse a direct order from Master. Jadeite: I think it's kind of ingenious. Zoisite: Would it be less idiotic in private? Kunzite: No. Study buddy #1: Okay, well, can we all agree that Chiba has the best costume out of all of us?
The Shitennou immediately agree in unison.
Roomie: You would think so. Mamoru: This aged thing?  Roomie: You mean 'this old thing'. Mamoru: Yes. Thank you. Kunzite: Modesty doesn't suit you, Master. Roomie: Right? He would look so much hot—ah, better in that toga I suggested. Study buddy #1: He… *clearly looks torn on the subject* Mamoru: I get cold easily. Roomie: Could that have something to do with always having four ghosts around you? No offense, guys. Nephrite: None taken. Zoisite: Speak for yourself. Kunzite: Your existence is an offense. Roomie: Someone clearly needs a drink. Jadeite: He always does. Study buddy #1: Omgomgomgomg. Roomie: You okay there, man? Study buddy #1: I just saw at least two Sailor Moons in this crowd. I knew I shouldn't have chickened out. Roomie: That's what I've been telling you! Don't let that asshat Steve talk you out of wearing miniskirts if that's what you really want to do. YOLO. It's your life. Kunzite: And your reputation. Nephrite: Careful. That might come across as a slight to the Princess. Kunzite: I would never! Mamoru: What is 'yolo'? Jadeite: It seems to be a popular justification for questionable actions or decisions. Roomie: No, it… actually, yeah, that's pretty accurate. Jadeite: How does being reborn factor into that logic? Study buddy #1: Oh, you mean like the Senshi? Roomie: Also a foundational tenet in many Eastern religions. You know, no big deal. Mamoru: Some of the Senshi do use this 'yolo', but I didn't ask them to explain. It seemed safer not to know. Study buddy #1: Ooh, are you getting into character? Roomie: Danger, Will Robinson. Thirsty Sailor Moon at ten o'clock. Everyone else: What?? Roomie: He probably wants a picture with Chiba. Mamoru: 'He'…? Kunzite: *shaking his head* Republicans. Roomie: Not likely. Not with that level of freedom of expression, my friend.  Kunzite: I'm not your friend. Sailor Moonbro: Yoooo, Tuxedo K-Man! Your costume is sick! Where'd you get that cape? It almost seems like it's alive! And that hat! Could be straight out of Titanic. Can I get a picture with you?
Mamoru exchanges a long-suffering look with his roommate.
Roomie: *shrugs* YOLO. Where's your camera, Sailor Dude? I'll do the honors.

VxK Week Day 3: Stone
@senshixshitennouweeks I'm happy to say I think this is the VxK Week entry I'm most proud of
Mall Culture was a tricky business. Before the great thaw, online shopping and monopolization had majorly cut into what had formerly been major hang out spots for young people looking to connect with other people and burn through some extra spending money.
But, due to some handy laws passed by Neo-Queen Serenity (who herself had some fond memories of outlet shopping and food courts), the Crystal Tokyo Mall boasted an extensive array of businesses, catering to numerous tastes, including reasonably priced jewelry. There were even rumors that the stores were sometimes frequented by disguised members of the royal family. Although these were only rumors. Especially since the King of Crystal Tokyo would never be caught in a pea green hoodie with one of his trusted guard looking over rings in a quaint jewelry store.
"What about this one?"
"Too small."
"And this?"
"It wouldn't match the ring."
"And this?"
"That looks just like the one you gave Usagi."
Mamoru huffed and turned to glare at Karim, though he felt his intent might be undercut by the fact that he wore his daughter on a baby harness strapped to his chest.
“We’ve been here for five hours, Karim,” he said, “I didn’t take this long picking out my engagement ring!”
“I’m sorry,” Karim said, turning back to peruse the display case, “but it has to be perfect.”
“This again?”
The two were joined by Karim’s sister, Basma, who pushed a bolt of fabric in a shopping cart in front of her.
“How was the shopping?” Mamoru asked.
“Pretty good,” Basma replied, holding up the fabric (somewhat awkwardly due to its size and weight).
“Tangerine silk. Perfect for Minako. Setsuna is still looking for some gold ribbons, but we should have the bridesmaid dresses done by next week.”
“Not a moment too soon,” Mamoru said, sighing in relief. This had been much more stressful than being a high school superhero.
The idea had been Usagi’s. To surprise the ultimate matchmaker and romantic, Sailor Venus, with a ready-made wedding the moment her beau, the ever steadfast and stoic Kunzite (though he went by Karim in his civilian persona), proposed to her. While he had his reservations, Mamoru could admit that so far things had gone smoothly. Makoto on catering, Zoisite and Michiru had already composed an original waltz for the reception (a wonder, considering their different styles of composition and tastes), Rei and Usagi were working to keep Minako distracted and Ami was coordinating the whole thing, while Jadeite was vetting the guest list.
But between the extreme personalities of some of the individuals involved and the inability to ask Minako what exactly she would like for her own wedding, people were getting testy. He’d already had to break up a bridezilla moment between Nephrite and Haruka over the bride and groom’s wedding carriage. And then there was getting everyone’s families together for the date.
Whoever said it was good to be the king must have just been a comedian.
Speaking of comedy…
“By the way, what do you mean again?” Mamoru asked, raising an eyebrow.
Basma snickered into her fist while Karim groaned.
“You should have seen this guy when he first started as Minako’s photographer,” she said, before lowering her voice to imitate her brother, “nothing’s good enough for her! No digital touch up! I used to be evil!”
“I do not sound like that,” Karim said, folding his arms across his chest.
“Dat!” Chibiusa cried, and she seemed to point towards Karim.
Karim heaved a sigh and turned returned to gem hunting.
“Maybe you should pick a gem that reminds you of her,” Basma said. She joined her brother in looking over the display case before pointing at a gem that held dozens of flecks of colors.
“Like that one!” she said.
Karim shook his head.
“Those are bad luck.”
“Since when are you superstitious?”
Karim turned to look at his prince and his sister.
“I already failed once with Minako, I don’t want to ruin it again. Not with this.”
“I understand the sentiment,” Mamoru said, allowing Chibiusa to grip his finger, “but you might be overthinking this. Minako loves you. In fact, she loves everyone with her whole heart. And I think that she would love—”
“There!”
Karim’s finger pressed against the display case. There, in the center of the case, rested an orange sapphire cut into the shape of a heart. Around it the gem, tiny diamonds winked in the lights of the case.
“That’s the one! That’s for her!”
The tension that had been building in Mamoru’s shoulders loosened and he waved over the clerk.
“We’ll take that one,” he said, “money is no object.
Tumblr media
“Best week ever!”
Minako fell backwards onto her bed with three shopping bags on either arm, and laughed, a sound that warmed Karim’s heart.
“Have a fun day?” he asked from his place at his desk.
“Did I? We went to the film festival they were hosting in Shibuya, and then…”
For maybe five minutes, Karim just watched as Minako droned on and on about her past few days, about concerts and movies and how much fun she was having this week. How bright she could be, how much energy she could fit into a room.
If he was going to ask her to share the rest of her life with him, Karim thought, now was the best time.
“Minako,” he said, rising, “I think there’s something we need to talk about…”
Minako held up a finger, signaling him to stop.
“Just a second,” she said.
Minako reached into one of the bags and dug through it’s contents, swearing at least once before she retrieved what she seemed to be looking for.
A small, square box lined with felt.
Karim’s eyes widened.
Could it be.
“Look, I know it’s not a leap year. But we’ve been living together for like… well, I can’t remember how long. But you’re probably one of the best things that ever happened to me and I know how much of a wondering eye I had when I was in middle school, but… you know what, just screw it!”
Minako opened the box and held it out to Karim. Nestled inside was a ring. Simple and elegant, made of white gold and bearing a pale pink gem.
Kunzite.
“Will you marry me?”
The warmth in Karim’s chest spread up to his face, manifesting in a smile. Reaching into his pocket, he removed his own box, shaped like a heart and held it out to Minako.
“Will this do as an answer?” he asked.

9 people you’d like to get to know better
got tagged by the lovely @arinaxiv thank youuuuuu (づ˶•༝•˶)づ♡
Three Ships:
Maedhros/Fingon (Silmarillion etc) (The Most Ship. the whole drama, oh Eru. Unnumbered Tears indeed.)
Tennou Haruka/Kaiou Michiru (Sailor Moon) (ethereal. perfect. actually in a healthy relationship. also that scene towards the end of the battle against Galaxia, where everyone dies (for the n-th time) and they use their last bits of strength to reach for each other's hands broke me)
Aranea Highwind/Ignis Scientia (FFXV) (they don't even have much shared dialogue in the game iirc but the bits they do have completely rewired my brain. they compliment each other's character so well. i just think they're neat.)
First Ever Ship: huge supporter of Kunzite/Zoisite in Sailor Moon since age 6 (and unknowing fujoshi, thanks german synchro, i owe you so much)
Last Song: On the Dark Waters by Amorphis (i listen to music almost all the time, this is just what was playing as i typed this. it’s also really good tho. the entire album is really good imho, i basically have it on repeat atm.)
Currently Reading: i have that sickness where i read multiple books at once. the one in my hand bag, meaning most actively being read, is The London Séance Society by Sarah Penner. (victorian ladies solving murders by asking ghosts who killed them how awesome is that)
Currently Watching: just finished Moriarty the Patriot. (Apparently the only way to make Sherlock Holmes palatable to me is transforming it into a bishounen anime and make Moriarty a murderous socialist and also the protagonist)
Currently Consuming: ungodly amounts of baked goods (sadly not in this moment but in general) and yarn (i’m not eating the yarn i swear. must. make. sock.)
Currently Craving: freetime to make things (i need more socks. my feet are cold.... so cold…. also let's not talk about the fabric stash)
~・*♡੭ੇ৸♡੭ੇ৸♡*・~
Honestly don't know who to tag, i'm feeling very self conscious about poking people at the moment, esp about personal stuffs 🙊
If you see this sliding across your dash and love filling questionnaires feel free though <3

Refining the Shitennou civilian name in my fanfiction because now that I know even just a smidgen of Japanese, I realize how lazy the original names I've given them were... It's one thing to play with puns, it's another thing when I didn't bother with research and end up giving them FAMILY NAMES for first names. LMAO (I feel so embarrassed once I realized this I want to smack my old self so hard on the head.)
Here's what I've landed on for the new names. I'm keeping the live-action actor's family name for Shitennou's family name. But the first names are now changed. It would still play on their hair colour pronunciation-wise (kuro - black, shiro - white, aka - red, kiiro - yellow), but the new first names will go beyond that and their Kanji will actually be meaningful.
Kunzite: 窪寺玄翔 (Kobodera Kuroto)
玄 (kuro) - Black color. Black with a reddish tinge. Dark. The color of heaven. Deep. Distant. Far away.
翔 (to) - Fly. Spread your wings and fly. To fly high in the sky.
I could've just land with "Kurou", but I looked up Kuroto and saw the meaning of "翔". Coupled with "玄" meaning the colour of heavan and "far away", I wanted to use this name as a tribute to Kobodera Akira. :'(
Zoisite: 遠藤志郎 (Endou Shirou)
志 (shi) - Aspiration. To aim to be. Where the mind aims. Compassion. Sign. To remember. To record. A gift for thanks or appreciation.
郎 (rou) - Male. Men. Young men. A word that refers broadly to boys. A retainer
I felt choosing "志" fits Zoisite's character given the compassion he showed for Mamoru and Usagi at the end in PGSM, and he's the one most focused on remembering the past life.
Nephrite: 松本赤人 (Matsumoto Akato)
赤 (aka) - Red color. Nothing. Bare. Sincerity. The equator. Communism.
人 (to) - People. Human beings. Humanity. Every single person. People. Grown-ups. Adults. Personality. Character. A word used to count people.
I wanted to use the word "人" in Nephrite's name to referencing that Nephrite was the only Shitennou to be given a civilian identity in PGSM and had a character arc in his human form. As well, combined with "赤" meaning sincerity and bare, it worked well with how I see Nephrite in this second life - an honest and candid man not afraid to speak his mind and share his feelings (especially with Ami)
(Also I find it funny it literally can also mean "red man" hahahahah)
Jadeite: 増尾輝狼 (Masuo Kirou)
輝 (ki) - Shining. Glittering. Brilliant. Splendid.
狼 (rou) - Wolf. A mammal of the canine family. A metaphor for something as ferocious as a wolf. To be frightened. To be dismayed.
I chose "輝" for "ki" because of what I want to achive with Jadeite's character in Echoes of Time. "狼" (wolf) being canine to me attributes to his undying loyalty as we see in PGSM, and his ferocity when defending his comrade and those he chooses to dedicate himself to protect.

Risk (Chapter 4 of The Great Crossover Episode!)
Violet steadily drifted in and out of consciousness, their breathing shallow as Zoisite concentrated xeir strength into keeping them stable, long enough for the other three generals to figure out a plan. "Kunzite, what should we do? You're the oldest here!" Nephrite pleaded, a hand on Violet's forehead. Kunzite said nothing, only letting out a quiet sigh, as the glowing blue hole in Violet's stomach only grew bigger, eating them from the inside out. They twitched and convulsed, as Zoisite faltered slightly, Jadeite lending some of his strength quickly to keep xem going.
"...I'm afraid it might be too late by now to save them. If we had the means to get where they had come from, maybe. But it's impossible now" He lowered his head solemnly. Nephrite stood silently, shaking their head, before he slowly walked out the room, walking into the hallway. A few minutes later, his quiet sobs could be heard outside the door, as Jadeite buried his head into his hands in his grief. The front door opened, and closed, and Kunzite stood, following Nephrite out to bring some level of comfort, leaving Jadeite and Zoisite alone with the husk that was once their beloved family member, as their life ebbed away slowly. Jadeite reached out, grabbing their hand slowly. "Do you think that it's peaceful? Wherever we go, after we pass on, I mean?" He tilted his head, not looking at xem. Zoisite shrugged, weak from xeir strength being drained, looking up as the front door slammed open, and soon enough, so did the living room door, as the Walter bots ran into the room, filling out into the large space.
Hatchworth was the first to their side, ignoring Zoisite's protests, grabbing their arm and holding it close, checking for a pulse, or any other sign of life. Violet took in a brief, shallow breath, and he let out a trail of steam from relief, before attempting to lift them up. Zoisite hissed in response, immediately holding xeir dagger to his throat, although it would do little against the automaton to harm him. "Zoisite, it's alright... that's their family, from the other world." Kunzite soothed, putting its hand on his lover's arm. Xey growled still, keeping a hand on their chest, to keep feeding them xeir strength. "Please!" Data begged, "We need to get them back home so we can save them!"
"...Fine, you can take them. But I'm coming with you, they need this strength, or else they will die!" Xey snapped, standing up as Hatchworth lifted them, keeping xeir hand on their arm. Nephrite stood as well, his face wiped of any tears, as Hatchworth concentrated his energy, opening a blue matter portal, and stepped through, the other's following close behind.

just for fun, snippets of three fics I’m working on below the cut (all of them sailor moon, since that’s been the current fixation for over a year now). they’re not edited, but I wanted to share them for anyone interested, and since I can’t decide which to focus on first
first, a story about the moment the shitennou left endymion in the golden kingdom:
The whisper at his ear was so soft he barely registered it before he was pushed down to his knees.
“I really am sorry about this.”
Kunzite’s hand on his shoulder was heavy, and all Endymion could do was twist around to try to look at him, to see—he didn’t know what he wanted to see, just desperate to find something that would explain this madness.
“What are—?” Endymion tried to ask, but found that he stopped despite himself when he saw Kunzite’s face. There was no emotion in it he could discern, just dull grey eyes and an expression as blank as a block of stone or a wall of ice. People often compared Kunzite to such, but it had never been true. Even without his powers, Endymion always had been able to see the feelings on his face, although it may have been subtler than most.
And, when Endymion tapped into those powers and focused on the feelings he should have been able to sense through the weight of Kunzite’s hand holding him down, it was as if there was simply no one there at all.
---
second, a continuation of the last chapter of What Dreams May Come:
When he looked up, the stranger was looking at him again, with a strange expression on his face. “Are you sure we haven’t met?”
Sasha shook his head. “I don’t think that’s possible. I mean, I only just moved here, so it would have to have been in the past couple of weeks, and I think I would have remembered meeting you. Although…” He couldn’t shake the feeling that they had met somewhere, somehow. “You do seem familiar. Ever been on TV? Maybe I saw you there.”
That got a laugh from the man sitting across from him. “God, no. That’s not the life for me, I prefer to stay out of the spotlight when I can help it.”
You’ve certainly got the looks for it, Sasha thought, but didn’t say, because that would be too weird to say to the man who he’d only met not half an hour ago. Instead, he said, “Guess it’s déjà vu.”
“I suppose it must be. Or we met in a dream.”
Sasha laughed. “Yeah, maybe that’s it.”
---
third, a snippet from the third chapter of the shitennou time travel au I started last year:
“I have no idea why she cared about him so much. I mean, she didn’t care if we killed any of the Sailors, so why did she want us to bring Tuxedo Mask to her so badly?”
Kunzite blanched as Zoisite spoke, and Jadeite watched as his eyes widened as if he’d had some horrible epiphany. His grip on Zoisite’s arm must have tightened, as Zoisite turned to him with a questioning expression. “...Kunzite? Is everything okay?”
“She called him Endymion.” Kunzite’s voice was a hoarse whisper, and the words he spoke spilled from his lips like they were being forcibly drawn out of him. “She brought him back… Metallia made him her puppet like she did us, and she called him Endymion.”
---
okay I lied here’s a fourth, a snippet from a dark kingdom kunzoi getting together fic that is probably fluffier and sillier than it should be:
The Dark Kingdom was not a place for love. It was not a soft place, not one that valued affection, not one where it was safe to care for another, for you were always too aware that the next day could bring a sentence of death in its myriad of forms. Love, affection, trust: all weaknesses to one’s place in the order of the kingdom. And yet somehow Kunzite had found himself falling anyway. He, the man with the heart of stone, the ice king, Beryl’s most loyal general, had fallen madly—and it truly must have been a madness—in love with his fellow general, a man with a tongue sharper than the blades he fought with and a temper to match.
This was unacceptable.
---
other sailor moon fics I am currently working on include: a fic of the moments beryl took control of each of the shitennou, a few different kunzoi short fics, a full golden kingdom story, and my college au that isn’t actually a college au, it’s complicated. the last two of these I have been very slowly plotting out over the last year and I have So Many Thoughts on them

Speaking of the Senshi/Shitennou pairs. I was kind of curious why those stones in particular, right. Kunzite and zoisite are so unusual that I think only gemstone aficionados know them, and even though jadeite and nephrite are somewhat more commonly known names IIRC it still made people mess up the mineral names back in the day.
Well, uh, so, it was alleged that Takeuchi-sensei chose them to match the character and personalities of the senshi they're partnered with, so... Excuse me while I go overthink this and have a meltdown in suffering.
Tumblr media
In the first place, supposedly the "inner senshi" are officially meant to be called "guardians"/"guardian deities" (守護 or 守護神). Haven't seen the raws, so I can't confirm, but that's what the JP media says. The term "Shitennou", as many are already aware of, are originally a term used to refer to a set of 4 Buddhist guardian deities.
If true then it just feels like they're all intended to be perfectly matching sets from the start, and it just never made it into the story.
I read that Sailor Moon was originally meant to just end with the Dark Kingdom plot, so maybe sensei intended to have a Romeo and Juliet sad ending where everyone just dies in the end?
These are all based on Japanese gemology guides (same as what I used to research for the Shitennou knight titles), since I imagine it's more likely to be the one Takeuchi-sensei had access to. These may differ from international ones.
(Warning: Long post)
In the manga sensei specified that the zoisite is the blue one, that's also known as "tanzanite". The blue variety of zoisite, among other things, means "calm and intelligence".
The connection to Ami/Mercury's character is very straightforward and obvious.
In terms of romance, a zoisite also means "subdued expressions of love". It really makes me think of how gentle this pair looks in the splash art sensei drew.
Kunzite means "premonition of a lover". It's specifically oh dang when I saw this because Minako was "special" among the senshi in the way that her character vibes are based on "love" (because Venus, goddess of love), rather than the original elemental name attached to the planet. It fits enough to make you pause and wonder if this it truly a coincidence.
The planet venus originally has the element of "gold/metal". The gold is reflected in her design somewhat, but her senshi identity is more related to "love". The other girls' names matches their planets' element names. E.g Jupiter = mokusei = wood, Ki(no) = wood/tree. Mercury = suisei = water, Mizu(no) = water.
Also Venus's relationship with Kunzite ended up being the one who got the most hints actually shown in the manga, so... I do wonder.
Tumblr media
The two jades are less overly specific like this, especially Nephrite, but well.
Jadeite is the native jade from Japan, and has been long used to make magatama since ancient times. As such it's always seen as a deeply spiritual stone, that can protect against and/or ward off evil. A perfect match for Rei, who is a miko. One wonders if sensei chose the stone because of Rei being a miko, or if she made Rei a miko after choosing this name for the one matched with her.
Edit: Japanese Wiki claims Rei being a miko was based on Takeuchi-sensei's personal experience as a part time miko. So then Jadeite had to have been named/chosen to fit her, if this theory is true.
Not to mention that Akuryou Taisan, the evil-banishing spell, is something that she uses quite often.
Nephrite is the most confusing one here, because I'm not really able to find the connection. That's why I initially had strong doubts about the rumour/claim about the gemstone names' connection to the senshi.
In the gemology guide that I referenced, its meaning is "charm of maturity". I suppose Mako has always felt like she's older than the other girls, because her hobbies (cooking and home decor) feels really motherly.
Other than that and the stone being a deep green colour similar to Jupiter's senshi outfit I'm not entirely sure. (in the manga, sensei says nephrites are "always deep green" even though IRL that's not the case)
----
Just my additional comments after reading everything that I did:
In terms of colour, I like to think Jadeite is a red jade. Not just to match Rei, but in the manga Jadeite's stone is always coloured the darkest (it's almost all-black). Of all the various jades, red is one of the darker-toned ones.
Tumblr media
The shading can be arbitrary, especially if sensei was just tracing from reference photos. Dark green jadeite also exist, so for all I know this is intended to be green too.
But if I use the logic that the stones are matched with the girls' character, I think red just fits the best. In gemstone language the red jade means "tenacity" and "willpower". Green jades tends to be associated with things like harmony, prosperity, luck, and so on. It doesn't feel very Rei-like.
Also, the nephrite jade being a "soft jade", it's associated with very cuddly meanings such as "warm" or "gentle", which makes me laugh even more than the "wisdom" one.
Unless, again, these words are more attached to the matching girls' character, rather than the guy in question, because yes I think Mako is definitely very warm and gentle and fluffy and very huggable.
Although other-coloured zoisite varieties were said to have different meaning, it looks like blue is the predominant zoisite colour in Japan. A lot of Japanese gem sites tend to automatically just say "it's blue" while describing zoisite, even though there's obviously other colours out there.
Sensei did specify it's "blue zoisite, a.k.a tanzanite" in the manga, so I think she's aware of the other colours having different meanings attached. Some articles also had mentioned Takeuchi-sensei's family runs a jewellery store?
I wonder if this is why Crystal went with the gemstone's healing properties for Zoi's title though, because the gemstone words overlaps too much with Mercury in a very in-the-face way. The other meanings are Hope, Mystery, Pride, and Noble, and maybe those don't make very good title names? Like, the only viable one is probably Hope, though I feel like it would be even more confusing if Crystal said Zoi is the "Knight of Hope" or whatever.
Another thing about Kunzite is that its meaning also include "pure and everlasting love", but the website caveated this that this is a saintly kind of love (for the gem's association with Holy Mother Mary). So it's not necessarily something to get overly excited about in terms of SenShi headcanoning, but, well, it's there.
"Shitennou" in Japanese pop culture is generally used to just mean "4 very important people", so it didn't have to actually mean anything. Like, a few samurai in history had their "shitennou", who are just the best 4 generals serving under them. Most famous being the Tokugawa shitennou, but other samurai lords actually have their own so-called shitennou. It's just that if the senshi are officially named "Guardians", then this changes the context.

Here we have the Dark Kingdom, including the manga-exclusive Dark Academy! These canons have a chance for death or redemption depending on how they are played and I do mean they all do. This means even Queen Beryl could come out of Act 1 alive and healthy... but will it be as a part of the Sailor Guardians or to come back and haunt them in another act? We are leaving it all up to our lovely writers! Danbruite - Open Face Claim Fluroite - Open Face Claim Narcissus - Open Face Claim Pandora - Open Face Claim Jadiete - Open Face Claim Nephrite - Open Face Claim Zoisite - Open Face Claim Kunzite - Rene-Jean Page Queen Beryl - Open Face Claim We once again have lovely pictures belonging to PrincessMimoza on Deviantart so if you like these pieces please take a look at her other masterpiece!

Can I offer some alternative Senshi/Shitennou pairs? Some of this is inspired by the 90s anime and PGSM.
Ami/Nephrite: Okay I first loved these two from PGSM. But when I really think about them we could get an adorable shy girl x cool guy. Okay look, the first version of Sailor Moon I ever saw was the DiC dub. And Nephrite always came off as the cool guy. And I can't help but thinks he looks like a guy from an 80s Hair Metal Band (Nephrite did you give us that She's Got the Power abomination?). So yes this could be adorable.
Rei/Kunzite: They are both very serious, powerful, and usually presented as the most mature of their group. (Although we didn't get to see much of the Shitennou.)
Ami/Kunzite: I could see him wanting his partner to be a very intelligent person and her liking someone that is mature and calm.
Makoto/Zoisite: Okay look, the first version of Zoisite I ever knew was the 90s anime. He was either a bloodthirsty lady or and effeminate man in love with Kunzite. So I always see him as the most feminine of the Shitennou and I see him as non binary. (Except for Dub Zoisite, she's a transwoman). In the anime, Zoisite uses petals to teleport. What does Makoto want to do with her life? Run a cake and flower shop. Zoisite would love to work there. Now let's also imagine that he'd love for his girlfriend to be a touch masculine and very dominate. I always imagined Makoto being bisexual and she'd love her nonbinary partner.
Minako/Nephrite: Because I can't help but see Nephrite as a bit of a rockstar, these two could be a rockstar couple. They could both be in a punk band taking turns with the vocals.
Ami/Jadeite: Okay, Jadeite is the hardest one to place. I feel like I have the least to go off of him. But Ami is more passive than her friends and doesn't like to be noticed. And Jadeite sticks out the least of the Shitennou. They could walk down the street and not have many eyes on them.
Zoisite/Minako: The most beautiful couple ever. And if anything I could see these two being good friends.
Kunzite/Mamoru: I mean does anyone else think it would be kind of funny given the 90s anime? Think evil Mamoru seducing Kunzite and being the top. Kink fic anyone?
Usagi/Zoisite: These two could be a chaotic duo. And if they need a decoy Sailor Moon Zoisite would volunteer in an instant. God now I have an image of the two doing it while Zoi is dressed up like Sailor Moon.
Usagi/Kunzite: Does Usagi deserve a beautiful powerful knight?
Mamoru/Zoisite: in a world where Queen Beryl doesn't kill Zoisite for losing the silver crystal. Evil Mamoru steals Kunzite's man and taunts him over it. Kink fic anyone?
