If you know me from primary school, you would know that I am not a spectacle wearer. Oddly enough, I started wearing glasses when I entered Optometry school. My first ever prescription glasses is during our training before entering clinic year.
Truth be told: I hated wearing my glasses. It wasn’t how I imagined it to be in elementary where those who wear frames look smart. I didn’t like how I look with glasses. Mostly, I hated how I now have to wear my specs to see things better and avoid having eyestrains.
Overtime, wearing glasses before my 5th year started was a blessing in disguise. Through this experience, I developed a deeper appreciation for lenses. I have gained empathy in personally getting to see a fraction of what my patient’s have to deal with to carry on with their everyday tasks. Through this experience, I saw firsthand how even a small amount of grade can change a person’s life. That spectacles, when dispensed properly, can create a lasting impact. I gained interest in binocular vision. I always re-check, refine, and balance my refraction. I search for frames that will complement the face shape of my patients. I try to do my best during patient education—noting and customizing what I say depending on who my patient is.
Ever since this semester has started, I have felt disappointed at myself for not reaching certain things: may it be on patient handling or scores on a quiz. But just like my first pair of prescription glasses, these too have been blessings in disguise. Lately, I have learned to embrace my life when it’s worth celebrating, and even when it feels like it’s falling apart.

gently and politely reminding professors to submit their letters of recommendation is truly so scary

Once I graduated school, I realized I had to stop looking for external forms of validation (as a primary source of worth) because no more good grades, no more comments from professors etc etc. (And also because it's unhealthy etc etc)
Anyway, catch me checking the clinic reviews every few days to see if my patients said nice things about me. 🤡
(They do. I'm getting a good grade in Doctor. Something healthy to want and possible to achieve.)
At least I don't see it as validation for my existence like I did school at one point, it's just a nice little bonus.

being an american on here is wild because i keep seeing posts from other americans that describe things they've experienced and say that it is universal among americans and it'll be stuff i've either never heard of or know for a fact isn't true. maybe it's pretty common in your state or the states surrounding you, but there's so much stuff i see that i can not relate to whatsoever, and i've never left the states.
#liv won't shut up#i saw something about insurance today#said that optometry is never covered by health insurance#& i'm sitting here like dude the insurance my dad gets from work benefits (so it's not the best in a lot of ways) has covered our optometry#costs for 3 people for years. & actually idk the specifics but it seems like its not that bad of a plan. we usually buy more than a years#supply of contacts for me (only like a month more) and our insurance covers pretty much all the costs. i have to choose contacts or glasses#every year but my prescription has been very stable so i only have to get new glasses if they're damaged beyond repair#again it's not my insurance i'm covered by my parents & they dont tell me all the details so idk how much theyre paying for it. might be a#lot & we're doing it bc it's one of my dads benefits. but any way the point is that so many americans will say things like every single#person living in america understands & 90% of the time i have no frickin clue what they're on about or i have experienced the exact opposit#it's just interesting that this happens. & it happens all the time. 'all american schools require learning another language' no the frick#they do not. lots do (and this may be a state requirement thing wouldnt be surprised) but not all. wasnt required for me it was just highly#encouraged & i got a different type of diploma for my world lang classes (my hs had a few types of diplomas based on different classes/#grades/etc idk if thats a common thing or not). another good example are train posts actually. i can tell theres a divide between beliefs#on trains based on state & thats bc public transportation is not as feasible in some states. i've spent a good portion of my life living in#small towns or visiting small towns (family) & yeah public transportation in middle of nowhere wyoming and middle of nowhere idaho is a lot#less feasible than the east coast. those are places of vast nothingness other than a few towns every once in a while never exceeding 20000#(ID) or 500 (WY). & even in larger towns it seems like a lot of western states are more spread out. so a subway or other train isnt very#helpful (unless you want to do long distance trains then those could maybe work the issue is that costs money & idk if itd be used enough#to make it worth it for a gov/actually work well) & this is more of a rural/urban issue but that aligns with states as well in a lot of way#oh another one is about facs classes. so in a lot of places facs is being defunded or removed from curriculum. same with arts classes. &#this is becoming a problem in many places! but when ppl are like 'these classes are being taken away everywhere in america' i just sit#there thinking about my state requiring facs in middlie & high school (i believe but things could have changed) plus i had to take like 3#semesters of art (idk if thats state or school or district required) & thereve been talks of raising that requirement. & they add more opt#every year. i was helping my younger brother with his schedule & theres all sorts of stuff that wasnt there before. he has way more options#to fulfill that requirement than i did. & i'm not saying that this isnt a problem it is a problem most places but every state has different#legislation on this so for now at least lots of schools are required to have these classes. & i've probably lost my point by now but it is#odd that i see this so often. that most of posts about america i see are different from what i've experienced. idk maybe the states i've#lived in are weird but youd think that this wouldnt happen to me a lot would you? like sometimes yeah but this happens a lot.#my guess is that a lot of these things are very true if you talk about a specific region or state. but then ppl assume its an american

Your improvement meme! 24-26 feels like a big difference compared to the others, do you know what you did those years? Studies? School? Or just really focused on drawing a lot? I'm just curious c:
I left the art industry for good and kept art as my hobby again! Basically, I stopped trying to please various studios and those who told me to let go of the "anime style".
I experimented with a lot of different jobs, I moved to England for a while and then back home. I really struggled to find something I enjoyed doing that also provided a steady pay check, while I was trying to find a proper place to live. Unfortunately, my mental health suffered because of it.
Eventually, a friend graciously let me move in with her and I found a job that I enjoyed as an assistant at an optician, allowing me to focus on getting better and keeping art as my hobby. During the 2020 lock-down, I decided to start my comic and sign-up for optometry school the year after!

Ever since I was in my first year, I have feared the thought of finally entering our clinic year. Now, I am a few months away from it and I have never felt so clueless about everything that's happening. We're taking things one day at a time and trying to learn as much as we could.
We took high-yield subjects this semester starting with the second part of our Contact Lens course. Contact Lens 2 focused on fitting toric and hard contact lenses. It was interesting to discover different ways to insert and remove the lenses. I particularly enjoyed the removal of the rigid gas permeable CL.
During our Contact Lens 2 class, we were also lucky enough to attend lectures on Myopia Management. There, I have learned the various lenses we can prescribe someday to help control myopia progression. I loved learning the mechanisms of how myopia can be prevented and sights can be saved.
This month, one of the subjects we are taking is Clinical Pediatric Optometry. I look forward to it as it is one of the specializations I consider on taking in the future. We are also looking into Vision Rehabilitation which has been fun as we have finished our Clinical Low Vision class from the previous months.
The case report from my story the other day is from our Clinical Neuroanatomy. It took some time before we had a grasp on what was happening with the case but I missed immersing myself in academic reading and ended up enjoying looking into the articles available.
Do stay safe in this heat and don’t forget to wear your sunscreen!

how old was he when he met mary? their story is so cute and interesting in this one❤️
Tharman was 34 when he met Mary who has a few months shy of her 23 birthday.
She'd just graduated from Optometry school and she had plans to get her doctorate one day (Which she eventually did) and Tharman felt he'd be taking something from her if he were to enter into a serious relationship with her. Because she's young and he has Kate which is a lot to put on someone who is just out of university.
So after months, he sighs and screws up all of his courage and goes round to Mary's flat one Saturday. And he knows it makes him an arsehole to have waited so long but he just... every time he'd tried he couldn't go through with it.
"Hey, You!" Mary said when she opened the door, leaning forward to brush their lips together.
"Hey."
His tone evidently caught her off guard, her brow furrowing as she stared back at him. "Are you okay? Is Kate okay?"
Tharman forced himself to nod, staring down at his hands, "I just think we need to have a talk."
Mary nodded slowly, sitting on her sofa, gesturing for him to do the same. "Is this a... You might have an STD talk or...?"
Tharman's head shot up in surprise, his eyes wide as he shook his head, "No I haven't- I haven't been with anyone else since my wife and-"
"I'm joking." Mary cut him off softly, chuckling "I just wanted to see if I could get you to look at me."
He smiled, and his heart ached in his chest as he stared back at her, so beautiful with her hair piled atop her head and her pyjamas on. "Um- Mary, I've... really enjoyed the time we've spent together but I can't give you what you want, what you deserve so I think it's better if we finish this now before it gets too serious."
"Why?"
He'd expected so many things. Screaming and crying and guilt to cling to him as she hurled allegations at him, he hadn't expected her calm shrug.
"Why?" It caught him by surprise, "I- like I said I can't give you what you deserve so-"
"Why can't you give me what I want?"
"I'm-"
"Are you already married?"
"What? No."
Mary nodded, "Then you don't want children?"
Tharman sighed, "I have a daughter, you remember? She tricked you into going out with me in the first place. And I always wanted more kids, at least one more."
Mary nodded, staring back at him before she clicked her tongue, "Then I don't get it, because all I want is someone who loves me. I want to be a wife and mother, and have my career and that's it. And Kate didn't trick me into anything. If I didn't like you I would have told you no like I have to every other man whose asked me out since."
"Mary, I don't want to tie you down and-"
"Tharman, I love you."
That stopped him, just as much as her hand on his cheek did, and his breath shuddered in his chest.
"I love you, and I love Kate and I could be good for her. I would love her and I would treat her like she was my daughter. If you can tell me you don't love me I'll let you go, but if you love me too: Marry me."
He stared back at her for a long moment, his heart thrumming in his chest and he could see an entire life stretching out in front of them. Kate and Mary tucked up together. Another child, a boy or a girl, it didn't matter, all he knew was that he wanted. And it would be the most selfish thing he'd ever done, but he did it anyway.
"Get dressed."
Mary blinked at him, her brow furrowing. "What?"
Tharman sighed, "We can go and buy an engagement ring with you in pyjamas if you like but I thought you might want to get dressed."
"We're not going anywhere." Mary gasped her hands closing around the front of his shirt, dragging him down until his hips were cradled in hers. "Not yet."
And in the years that followed, Tharman was nothing but grateful that Mary had known what she wanted even if he'd been too scared to asked for it.

make danzo the uchiha’s optometris just for giggles
The real laugh is that the Uchiha don’t have a problem going to Orochimaru’s clinic, but would all groan when someone mentions having an appointment with Danzo’s weird self
Nisi even joked that the Uchiha would all agree someone should go to school to be an optometrist, however, no one wants him as a mentor. So he’s like an extreme last resort 💀

hellooooo! what was Theia like as a human do you think? <3
While most of that is most definitely *spoilers*, here's what Theia has to say, "Good question! Before I ended up down here, I was an optometrist's assistant, a lover of how the eye works, and curious about the workings of the human body. For a while I was *compound* for school to get an optometry degree but given the amount of training it takes (a good seven to eight years of medical school!), it wasn't something that I could fully *envision*. *Zoomer* than anticipated (as it usually goes), I ended up down here. A crying *frame* it was too. I would have been a great optometrist, if I do say so myself (and I do!)."

Today was my first day of optometry school 5 years ago. 🥲 August 21st, 2017
There was a solar eclipse that day. By the end of the week, we were closed for a record breaking hurricane.
January brought a freeze that close us again.
Second year brought academic trials of Competency and White Coat Ceremony and entering patient care for the first time. (Completely normal lmao)
Third year brought a new dean, rapid restructuring, mass leaving of the good professors. Boards studying. A water main broke and cut off all water to half the city. Clinic was cancelled. Then the plague. Shut downs. Boards cancelled 1 day before testing began.
Fourth Year brought Summer zoom class. The Dean and admin lying. I accidentally helped organize the students against them. Re-entering patient care in covid protocol 5 months later. Taking Part 1 and Part 2 four months apart. Returning to school for the first time in 9 months. Giant February freeze that nearly wiped out the entire electrical grid for the state. Breaking into the clinic to practice for Part 3 without running water. Taking Part 3. Graduation.
Then retaking Part 3. Getting a job. Now Plague 2: electric boogaloo Monkey Pox.
This all with 40-50 hours of class each week (until shut down) with assignments and studying. Test week and finals having anywhere from 7-10 exams in each stretch. Boards 1&2 were 8 hour long exams. Going to on-line learning immediately. Graduation ceremony limited to 3 guests each. Making friends and colleagues I can rely on to help answer any weird eye questions.
I got a little off track, but it's been a wild and unpredictable ride.
