I'm guessing now it's the same as Spanish because of imperialism, but did Catalan names originally follow the First name + Second name + Father's surname + Mother's surname naming system?
Yes, nowadays we use both surnames. We can't be sure of what would have happened, but the two surnames we have now were a Spanish imposition in most cases.
Before the 19th century, most Catalan men used only one surname. Only the upper classes had more surnames, since they often wanted to keep stacking titles (think of those really long names of nobles, if you marry into another powerful family and yours is powerful too you wouldn't want either of the lineages to get lost, the most titles you can "collect" the better!). Women could often use two surnames after getting married (their father's and their husband's).
In 1870, the Spanish law decided that civil register should have 2 surnames (first the father's and secondly the mother's) for each person to identify them better. That's how people started to have two surnames.
The most visible effect of this law, however, is the spelling. When Spanish-speaker state officers had to write down Catalan surnames, they would write them down according to Spanish spelling rules. That's why many Catalan surnames have a "Spanishified" spelling, like "Peña" instead of Penya, "Calzada" instead of Calçada, "Lladó" instead of Lledó, etc.
(As for first names, usually we only have 1 except you've been baptized, but that's not an official name and how much those 1 or 2 extra names are counted as part of your name depends on each person or family)
More information about the origin of Catalan surnames below the cut.
In the Middle Ages, Catalans had a name and a "nickname", often referred to a characteristic. Many of our surnames come from here. For example, physical attributes like Roig ("red", red-haired), Tort ("hooked"), Petit ("small"), Rossell ("blond"), Calvet ("balding"), etc; or jobs like Ferrer ("blacksmith"), Fuster ("carpenter"), Carnisser ("butcher"), Oller ("potter"), etc.
Among Catalan people, the use of surnames started being generalized in the 9th century.
In legal documents of the time, we see people are referred by who their father is. If the text was in Latin (even though people already spoke Catalan, Latin was still the most used language in writing), the first name would be in nominative case and the father's name in genitive case; if the text was in Catalan, it would be after the preposition "de", meaning "of" (same meaning as the cases in Latin). For example, Berenguer son of Ramon was Berengarius Raimundi in Latin and Berenguer de Ramon in Catalan.
Genitive case often ends in -is, that's why in Spanish and Aragonese you can find lots of surnames that come from a name+ez. For example: Sánchez would be the son of Sancho, Hernández of Hernán, López of Lope, González of Gonzalo, Rodríguez of Rodrigo, Martínez of Martín... Even nowadays, in Spain, 14 out of the 17 most common surnames are a name+ez! (Source)
This is not the case in Catalan. This Latin-derived surnames didn't become used. We only have 3 surnames with this origin (Peris, Sanxís, and Llopis) and they arrived to us from influence of Aragon, Castile and Navarre. Besides, neither of them is very common, unlike their Spanish equivalents. There was an exception in the Valencian Country, because some areas had a lot of Aragonese people as well as Catalan people or at least a strong Aragonese influence, so there existed more surnames related to the Aragonese ones.
From the 11th century on, the nobles started using the name of their lands as a surname, either after "de" (de Barcelona, d'Empúries...) or in adjective form (Barceló, Tarragó, Giró, Tàrrec). This started in the nobility to know who inherited what territories, but it was soon followed by the lower classes as well.
Lower class people often didn't have a territory to refer to and so they would use a name that made reference to their farmhouse, where they live, or other geographical terms. From here we get many of the most common Catalan surnames such as Riera ("stream"), Torrent ("watercourse"), Puig ("hill"), Pujol ("hill"), Vall ("valley") or Valls ("valleys"), Coma ("mountain pass"), Pomar ("apple orchard"), Vinyes ("vineyards"), Rovira ("oak tree forest"), Ribes ("shores") or simply the names of towns or areas like Solsona, Bages, Segarra, Agramunt, Vila, Canet, Cardona, Cabrera, Güell, Barberà, Cerdà...
All of this applies to men, but it worked differently for women because they weren't considered carriers of lineage in the same right as men, and were seen as under the property of a man (father or husband). In the Middle Ages, Catalan women usually had a feminine version of the father's surname (for example, if the father is Ferrer, she would be Ferrera). After getting married, women sometimes had both the father's and husband's surnames or only the husband's.

I own a book on German surnames from the 1920s, and one of the previous owners left a ton of homemade sticky notes for names whose meanings he never figured out. This one below is made from a newspaper clipping from Saturday, September 8th, 1923, for the name Keilhan, which the owner apparently never figured out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What really bums me out is that for this name, and for a few others he’s stenciled in, the meanings have since been discovered. He’s got tons of these notes in the margins of this book for the numerous names he presumably never figured out, but with the help of other materials (especially with the help of the internet) I’ve been able to uncover the meanings for almost all of them. I wish I could tell the original owner what the names mean.

Don't really know where I'm going with this post, definitely going in the musings tag.
Anyways, I've been thinking about names a lot. I'm thinking of changing mine again soon.
I've been thinking about Muslim names, fae names, witch names. Jewish names, Soviet names, saint names. Multicultural names. Old names, Dead names, alive names.
Names reflecting who we are, or who our parents wished we would be.
How could I, genderfluid and omnist, ever keep a name forever?
How can anyone find a name that encompasses the entirety of their identity?
Or is that something to want at all, should i instead use my name to protect my identity? Force people to know me rather than let them assume they do?
Am I the only one who takes this so seriously? The task of naming anything gives me so much stress, naming myself is always the most difficult.

Hello magical people!
This is a new blog where I will be posting content mainly regarding romanian mythology, language, literature, etc, but also general cool stuff I find about mythology, culture, anthropology, literature, onomatology (the study of personal names), short story prompts and ideas, yada yada. General whimsical stuff (as vague as that sounds)!
If you're interested in those sorts of subjects, I recommend you keep an eye out on what will be posted here. I will try my best to make posts in both Romanian and English, but I think I might just focus more on the English part, because there're very scarce resources and information about romanian *shenanigans* on the internet. I will make sure to provide sources for what I post If need be, and also: since a lot of these sources don't have English translation, I will most likely provide them so please keep that in mind ^_^
That said, I hope this will be a fun and helpful blog!
(tbh I made this so I could have a place to ramble about my favorite subjects like an unsupervised feral raccoon and just spit them out into the digital sea)
Pupici vrăjitorești!

Completely opposite from his father, who is the king of nicknames, Asparagus very rarely uses any sort of shortening of a cat's name, or nicknames or even affectionate call cards like "dear", unless he is very close with that cat.
He also just happens to be very interested in onomatology, so that's a bonus. Or not. Depends who you ask - some cats rather like being swept up in those sorts of 45 minute explanations.

The Space Between the Stars ch. 17-
“The Ghosts That We Knew”
Tumblr media
Aloy has more nightmares, and Seyka pulls her out of them. Then they make their way to the Base, and Seyka gets a warm welcome.
Elisabet deals with the aftermath of everything over the past 8 years, and forms an unlikely friendship with someone who will show her what she’s worth.
Read here
“Aloy herself is now feeling disconnected from her own body, with that bubbling, prickling, crawling feeling cleaving up her skin and separating her spirit from her body like peeling one huge piece of bark off of a tree in one massive yank as her corporeal presence betrays her. She knows that Seyka is the one person who can walk through the darkness with her…hand in hand, and pull her back to herself.
But the thought of just surrendering and letting the feeling wash over her body as she trembles and roils herself into oblivion in Seyka’s arms scares her more than anything. Because what if she can’t get out? On the other side is the same ache, the same terror. The same dehumanization and projections thrown on her body as being their symbol.
Just like that stone cold statue in Meridian.
There is no time between battles, either. Between fights and visions and gnarled, staggering nightmares. No time to approximate how her knuckles go white trying to hold on because sometimes she doesn’t want to. No time between blood and trauma and death and loss. No time to cover the depth of the wounds she herself had caused: directly or indirectly. Rost. Bast. Vala. Varl. Fashav. Kotallo and his agonizing phantom pains. Beta and nearly losing her for good, unwilling to fulfill what she had asked her to do, when she was taken. Adding to her trauma. Countless others. Those she’d stabbed, maimed, blown into particles because she couldn’t find any other solution. Those she couldn’t help or didn’t have time to.
As though she could ever make up for all her graceless chaos, her twisted heart that she’d cut out ages ago and sold to Hades or whoever the main agent of darkness was at the time, her torrential loneliness soaking into every footprint she makes.
But then there’s Seyka— the letters of her name twist in her chest just like their onomatology— a caretaker wrapped around her heart, holding her in. The thing about having someone love you through the darkest, most gut-wrenching days of your life is that it creates something not found in the bounds of ordinary connections. You try as you might not to bleed on them, pulling your mess back in towards yourself with nothing but a useless cloth, yet they continue to clean it up anyway— unapologetically.
Seyka had accepted all of her tangled, cycloptic darkness right from the beginning, and stopped her from leaning into her unfulfilled destiny of dying inside that Horus, where without her, she would have been blown to bits, ejected into the sea, her bones glistening with the potentiality of the rush of cold seawater, and her lungs changing to coral to match the adornments all over Seyka’s body, connecting to her permanently. Tethering her even in death.
She can’t hold back, now—she needs her. She needs her warmth. She rises above her, Seyka releasing her hold on her slightly, and she lays her bare body on top of her in the backdrop of the rising sun. She needs her touch, and to pull the breath from her lungs. She needs to absorb her into her very skin and approximate her light to shine out the darkest depths of the wraith that she feels she’s becoming.”

Hi I saw your ask to Neil Gaiman and now I need you to tell me everything about the theory that Crowley was Rafael pleasenthankyou.
Have a good day!
Oh absolutely! (Stealing Henry's ACC for this lmao) there are a few coincidences regarding the 'Crowley is Raphael' theory, and I'll start with the simplest and go more in-depth as I go along!
Tumblr media
Appearance:
Archangel Raphael/Rafael (or spelt otherwise) is often interpreted with black, emerald green or white wings. He was portrayed with long red hair, or a 'bob' of curly red hair quite often in renaissance art pieces. There's an official statue of Raphael that bears ALOT of resemblence to Crowley's prior angel form as well
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Personality/meaning:
Archangel Raphael is interpreted as a 'protector and healer'. He had the ability to heal those who were sick, and is called upon in times of need and desperation. The protector element is what adheres to Crowley most in my opinion, and when he goes out of his way to protect others that were supposed to be thwarted by god, including humans and animals, it shows this. Raphael is also referred to as "protector of humans and animals".
Nomenclature/onomatology:
Aziraphale's name can be interpreted as many different things if written in Hebrew, depending on how it's spelled. (I'll put a quote here from philosopherking1887 's Tumblr)
“God, my strength, healed”, “God, my strength, heal!”, or (less likely) “Raphael is my strength” “helper of the arrogant/defiant one” or “heedless helper” “helper of the fallen” or “helper [and] intercessor”
What I'd like to focus on is "Raphael is my strength". Not only is this the odd one out, as it actually mentions Raphael in name, but it connects he and Crowley closer to together. The fact it is one of the options in the first place strengthens it's possibility in my opinion.
Canon:
(There will be season 2 spoilers from this point forward just incase you haven't seen it!)
Crowley had clearance to open the file on Gabriel, stating that "they don't change their passwords" after Muriel states that they don't have clearance because they're a lower rank angel. Crowley also worked with one of the archangels on the stars together with them. If the theory *is* true, Crowley would have most-likely been an archangel, not only this but (this may just be his neglegence correct me if I'm wrong) Crowley tends not to remember many things before the fall. He claims that he "doesn't remember" when sandalphon tells him of how they worked on the stars together.
I do know Crowley remembers that they used to scare the cherubs with stories of the book of life however, so I'm not sure that this point is entirely true.
Crowley also cleverly never states his name when Aziraphale introduces himself, and the last Archangel we have to see is Raphael. The rest of them have already been introduced, so I'm just curious as to where Raphael is!
Anyways- that's all I got on my front, I hope this helps! I'll post any other theories I find in the comments if and when I come across them! Have a good day and thank you for letting me ramble :3

2022 in Fics
I did a little fic round-up here, but before the year is out I wanted to make a list of the things I published on AO3 this year because you can never have enough self-promotion.
Satinalia & Harvestmere | G | Dragon Age Leliana & Zevran & Isabela / Dragon Age: Origins Ensemble My two entries for the 2022 Dragon Age Annual Calendar. The first is a little celebration between a party of rogues and the second a bonified ghost story told by renown griffon-hater Wynne.
Common Ground | G | Dragon Age Vivienne & Orlesian Warden Written for Shellepink for the Platonic Ideal Exchange. Vivienne meets an unexpected former colleague in the aftermath of Marquise Bouffon’s defeat. I liked the idea of Vivienne having a friendly rivalry with the Andras Warden from Awakening, and I inventing a Warden OC for the prompt was fun.
Because I Asked | E | Dragon Age Solas x Non-binary Lavellan My first explicit fic ever! Set in Solas and Ian’s much softer Modern Thedas verse. Ian wakes up with a thirst and he decides to make it Solas’s problem. Writing the intimacy in both their domestic lives and their sex was really fulfilling, I love this couple so much no matter what universe they’re in.
Prayers of the Father | G | Mass Effect Thane Krios & Miranda Lawson Written for CelestialArcadia for the Spectre Requisitions Exchange. Mass Effect 2 is my favourite of the ME games, but one thing I often find disappointing in it is the lack of dialogue between companions. This fic was one way I sought to explore what I wish the game would. Set after Miranda’s personal quest, but before Thane’s, I wanted to set up the similarities between these characters and their desires and how they might talk to each other about them when Shepard isn’t in the picture.
Remembering Well | G | Dragon Age Varric Tethras & Solas Written for the Solamancy 2022 Zine. Solas and Varric are both two characters who are (potentially) mourning the loss of one of the oldest friends. They’re also both storytellers, albeit of different flavours. I wanted to write Solas engaging with Varric’s loss by talking about his own, and keeping Hawke’s name alive in the wake of her death.
Homecoming | T | Dragon Age Charter & Agent(s) of Fen’Harel Written for YouWoreBlue for the Arlathan Exchange. Charter attends a party in pursuit of rumours of an ancient Elvhen artefact, and finds herself in a race against the agents of Fen’Harel to find it first. I wanted to depict the agents presented here with sympathy and compare them with the Inquisiton agents still in operation because I am overly fond of paralleling Solas’s forces with the protagonists’.
Onomatology | G | Dragon Age f!Cadash & Solas This was written for my roleplay blog a while ago, but I only got around to publishing it on AO3 this year. Solas is a name I headcanon he chose for himself and I wanted to write a conversation of him sharing why with Thora. Despite the secrets between them, they have a close friendship, one where he shares a lot while concealing what he must. Depicting that here was important to me.
Good-bye Kiss | M | Dragon Age f!Cadash x Blackwall  Originally written and published on my multimuse roleplay blog. It’s a little scene exploring Thom and Thora’s intimacy post-Revelations. Him leaving without saying good-bye rocked Thora almost as much as everything else about that quest, and when they eventually reunite good-byes become an important part of their daily rituals as a reflection of that.
The Storyteller’s Game & The Last Laugh | T | Dragon Age Fen’Harel & a Miscellaneous Cast After a long hiatus I finally got around to writing more Tales of Fen’Harel! I love writing fables, and two myths I heard about Aengus inspired me to create Elvhen interpretations. The Storyteller’s Game veers much closer to the fable I heard, whereas the second I lean into Fen’Harel as the noble’s nightmare, divvying justice where Mythal can’t (or won’t?) intercede.
The Ascent | M | Dragon Age | In-Progress f!Cadash & Solas My first proper longfic! I’ve had this idea in my head for a while and deciding I wanted to start publishing it this year. It’s an expansion on a drabble I wrote years ago. Thora’s faith in the Stone and her ancestors is an important aspect of her character, and it dovetails beautifully with Solas’s own interest in remembering the past. Given Cadash Thaig’s history with ancient Elvhenan, them travelling to it together just feels right. I’m looking forward to continuing this fic in 2023!
Ten fics may not be much by some estimates, but I’m really actually kind of proud of what I’ve written. I’m looking forward to the stuff I have in the works for 2023 and I hope it’ll be another good year for writing. I even have a WIP I began yesterday which isn’t Bioware-related.
Thank you to everyone who has read, commented, and promoted my fic this year. I appreciate each and every one of you. 💖 Have a happy New Year!
