I really like how Chainsaw Man #147 makes a clear callback to Tatsuki Fujimoto's earlier one shot, Yogen no Nayuta.
It's clear that a lot of the early concepts around the nature of the protective relationship between Kenji & Nayuta heavily influenced the relationship dynamic between his main characters in Chainsaw Man, with Denji & Makima (Nayuta), but that facets of those roles were expanded to Aki & Power and differentiated in important ways, like Aki being more of an older sibling & Power being the horned feline-like juvenile sibling, allowing the protective attachment relationship between Denji & Makima to be something very different before it came into its current form.
It's clear that the way violence gets amplified by fear mongering and disconnections in communication styles were laid out there in ways that have been a central element of Chainsaw Man, and have only been growing since then. Given the extremely complex examination of the role of the figurehead that took place in his other manga Fire Punch, which also formed due to traumatic attachment and distorted bonds of a severed protective sibling relationship, it's been fascinating how he's made Denji & Chainsaw Man both powerless to the groups that they influence while ONLY having that bond left.
I feel like Tatsuki Fujimoto's writing captures a very specific nuance of both individual and societal maladaptive coping mechanisms to trauma in a way where even these big, insane events will always pull back into a tiny individual scope — but one which never disconnects itself from the continuum of the larger environment in which it takes place.

Oh fuck it’s been two weeks already uuuhh Chapter 148 expert review time!!
Sorry for skipping out on chapter 147. I was too busy doing nothing.
First off: oh my god it’s normal Garou my sweet boy I haven’t seen you in ages—
Tumblr media
Also a lot of people have been pointing out the height difference in this pic, and I was gonna say that could be attributed to Bang always being hunched over but he’s definitely not hunched over here!! Fucking manlet! Little bitchboy! Googoo gaga bitch! Gonna get his ass beat by an 18 year-old prick while also being short. Pick a struggle, Bang.
Ngl I thought Garou’s irises were tears for a second and I got all up in my shit about it but turns out he’s just cooked out of his fucking mind. I mean, his brain is medium rare at this point. What the fuck is up with him. Why is he standing like that. Why are his feet so skinny??? He’s standing on pogo sticks??
Tumblr media
I thought Garou and Bang’s little dumpster scuffle was pretty cool. Murata’s fights are always really well choreographed and his posing is amazing. Only issue is I kinda thought their inevitable beat-down would be a little more climactic? The story thus far has been pretty plateaued and we haven’t really had a proper buildup towards this moment, I think. It’s just been one fight after another, and so far this feels no different. But, I could be getting too far ahead here. The fight’s just begun, maybe something will happen that’ll shift my opinion. But so far… yeah this seems like just another segment of punches being thrown.
I will say though, I do like Garou’s obvious improvement in this rematch with Bang. It was kind of expected since he’s gone through a lot since the Hero Hunter arc, but seeing him actually land a solid hit on the old fuck was really satisfying. He’s grown! He’s gotten stronger! Good for him! He’s still going to hell for nearly killing Mumen, though. But good for him!
Garou’s nonverbal-ness throughout this fight does bring mixed feelings in me, though. I was kinda looking forward to he and Bang’s banter; like maybe they’ll reveal things about Garou’s past that we didn’t know about or something. A few people have brought up that it could be because Garou’s asleep in this fight like he was with PPP and Darkshine, and if that’s the case then I’m a little disappointed. This confrontation was long overdue, and if Garou’s not even lucid throughout it then that could be a lot of character growth being missed out on. But like I said, it’s still early on. Maybe things will change.
I’m thinking impure thoughts.
Tumblr media
Man what the FUCK is this.
Also, what he says here kinda stung at first. Like, wow, Garou is more teachable when he’s literally a monster that just makes animal noises and doesn’t have any signs of even being lucid?? Made me a little nervous about how Silverfang treated Garou in the past, since he’s kind of treating him as just a vessel of strength right now, not as something that was once human, much less his beloved disciple. I know Silverfang is objectively Not a good teacher or caregiver but I wasn’t expecting him to just disregard Garou like that.
I talked with Kiyoko about it and turns out it’s a bit of a translation error. Silverfang does say that, but it’s with no regards towards younger Garou and more towards how present Garou is a lot more receptive to picking up techniques. So, it’s more just banter and not a “I’m disgracing all the years I’ve taken you under my wing” sorta thing. I’m happy about that. One of the more compelling things about their relationship is the lingering guilt and love Bang still holds for Garou.
EDIT:
Tumblr media
Also I just love the “you twisted punk” line. A lot of the dialogue in the manga is a little eeeehhh sometimes (not at the fault of anybody, by the way. Translations just be like that) but that line just feels so human. Very boomer, very witty, very funny.
So, Amahare and Nichirin are both dead but hey we got a funky lil’ sword and side quest out of it.
Tumblr media
Portal magic, motherfuckers. I thought the use of his necklace for this was really clever.
I’ve said before how I thought the manga was overloaded with deadly situations and yet lacking death, but boy has Murata turned all that shit around. Granted, I still think the heroes have too much plot armor but this is a nice change of pace. Now we got actual blood being shed. Yay.
We had some reveals here, which I thought were cool. Apparently Nichirin was Kamikaze’s teacher, which gives me some feelings. Nichirin was also Spring Mustachio’s teacher, but Spring Mustachio is nowhere near Kamikaze’s level yet. So, Nichirin died before he could see Spring Mustachio become a master, and Spring Mustachio watched his master die without having completed his training. That shit’s fucked! The council of swordsmasters is disbanded, so who the fuck is he gonna have as a teacher now? Is he gonna go under Kamikaze’s wing? Because clearly, we haven’t seen all of that fucker (and his disciples) yet. Now we got a fucking side quest for some gay little sword or something.
Tumblr media
This makes me… kinda excited for Kamikaze’s arc? Like, holy shit we might actually get a decent chunk of the story told around him (and maybe Spring Mustachio if Murata doesn’t forget about him because I certainly did). Idk if this is the best place for this massive lore drop but yay now Kamikaze has a working sword and a life mission to go on once we get up to speed with the webcomic. Also RIP Nichirin, your character was just used for plot progression lmao sucks to suck.
Golden Sperm looks like the shit I took today. I knew this was coming from the webcomic but nothing could’ve prepared me for the actual cyst this dude is.
Tumblr media
Also, his gay little mask or whatever is literally just a face copy of serious Saitama lol. I fucking hate this bitch I want to stick him in some soup broth and whack him against a brick wall until he no longer making a schlorping noise. Anyways.
In conclusion, still stan Bomb because he’s trying his fucking best, even after getting his shit rocked by an 18 year-old edgelord lmao. Also, he didn’t rip his shirt off pre-fight like a fuckboy.

OPM Manga Chapter 147 Review:  Toxic
Story: Preview to a catastrophe
I’m going to do something a little unusual.  Rather than give a summary of what happened, I’m going to save everything else that happens that for the meta and focus the story itself on just one thing.  Garou’s return.
For a guy of many many words, Garou here is wordless, a creature of instinct, rage, and an unstoppable desire to put down any hero he encounters. Social niceties be damned.
Tumblr media
no, Fubuki, you don’t belong in this battle
Bomb realises very quickly that this isn’t going to be a fight that he can afford to not engage fully with.  He wastes no time unleashing his trademark long-range offensive move, although he’s no slouch in close- up fighting either.  I love how the panel below superimposes several snapshots in time in a single image, as if the cameraman hasn’t enough time to separate the action into individual frames. It sells the speed and fury of the fight better than many blurry images.  Also Murata is flexing on us with regards to his portrayal of fight choreography, he’s allowed. :)
Tumblr media
For his own part, Garou flows effortlessly from conventional to unconventional in his fighting, bending improbably out of the way one moment, parrying in an orthodox manner the next.  Eventually the seeming balance between the two breaks inexorably in Garou’s favour, leaving Bomb marvelling at the former’s incredible evolution.
Tumblr media
Nothing for it, there’s no choice but to kill Garou if possible. Bomb hides a hand behind his back as he readies his iron-cutting fist one last time.  It’s unfortunate that Garou has long since intuited how to do the same when he faced off against the Monster King, half a day ago ( I know, it’s been years for us), and does exactly the same, matching up timing and intensity perfectly with Bomb’s, thus cancelling it out.
Bang finally catches up to where the two are fighting to find his elder brother defeated.
Just as at the end of chapter 83, master and disciple face off.  But the atmosphere between the two could not be more different, and the stakes are about as high as they could possibly get.
Tumblr media
What new awakening will come from the next fight?  Portents are dire.
Meta: Elsewhere
What doesn’t kill me has made a tactical mistake
For a story whose big schtick is that surviving what should have killed one makes one stronger,  it’s surprising the amount and variety of mileage it gets out of that idea.
Making light of the idea, we have Genos literally rocketing back to his feet and casually dusting himself off after being smashed into a hole in the ground by Black Sperm.  After being thrown into or through so many bits of masonry and earth, getting up with elan is nothing to him.  Damn, he’s become tough! Awesome.
On the opposite side, making dark of the idea, we have Fuhrer Ugly, whose strength of hatred and rage is such that he keeps continuously reforming despite being continually digested by Gums’ digestive fluids... and has turned that into a new ability, able to melt anyone who touches him, kill with his spit, and reform after being cut.  Terrifying.
And on the other other side, a perfect hypotenuse of awesome and terrifying, we have Garou.  He has disinterred himself from the remains of the Monster Association base and while apparently fighting more by instinct than reason, his moves reprise everything he’s learned to date through his life-and-death fights with incredible fluency.
And of course, there’s Tank Top Master whose tank top seems to have magically preserved his life.  I wonder what Fubuki has in mind for Pig God to do to help her help Tank Top Master.
Anyway, talking about serious injury...
Let’s talk about gore, baby
I’ve said before that I’m tired of all injuries accruing to either Genos or Zombieman and wanted some flesh-and-blood to be mangled.  I don’t take that back: share the pain, baby!
But even for my evil heart, hoo, the brutal suddenness with which Fuhrer Ugly ended Zambai’s life was yikes!  Heroes may never die, but those next to them have no such protection.  I’m sorry man.  You paid the highest price for supporting a hero.
Tumblr media
Heroes may never die but that doesn’t mean they can’t suffer horribly.  If Tank Top Master being turned into a human patty wasn’t grisly enough, finding out that SuperAlloy’s famously resistant shine isn’t chemically resistant is enough to give one a shudder of horror/disgust:  his hands have been defleshed down to tendon and bone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Never mind fear; it’s going to be a while before  SuperAlloy *can* fight at all. And with his chest being burned as well, I think that he will be lucky not to come away with disfiguring scars.  He might start wearing a shirt after this...
ONE, have some mercy for your heroes or half of them will never work again. But not too much mercy, they’ve had it too easy for too long.
There’s more to help than rescue
If you’d told me that this day would see Genos earning the trust and respect of the heroes he has called the bitch and the witch respectively, and that feeling would be mutual, I’d have told you to stop fantasising.   I’ve spent enough words talking about the unexpected compassion he showed to Fubuki when the latter was beside herself with worry for her sister.
Tatsumaki has internalised the advice Blast gave her so thoroughly that she’s come to think herself as being beyond help.  But there’s more to help than haplessly accepting rescue.   Help can also be someone intervening only when you most need it, respecting that you can generally take care of yourself.  Help can be sharing the burden, enabling you to achieve more, more easily.  Help can be having your back so you can fight without fear of ambush.  All of these forms of help Genos has provided to Tatsumaki from the moment the battle pitched high into the sky.  And she’s had his back too.  Seeing her consciously acknowledge that and lean into it was an amazing gift I didn’t know I needed.
Tumblr media
from allies in name only to comrades-in-arms, what a fearsome pair!  Gambatte!
Of course it can get worse
The heroes’ situation seems to be getting worse and worse.  Their number is being whittled down to size: Tank Top Master is out for the count, Bang is tied up, Superalloy Darkshine is maimed, Atomic is out of his main weapon, Child Emperor is lost somewhere and Puri Puri is looking for him, Zombieman and Amai Mask are still pulling themselves together, and Tatsumaki and Genos are standing more by spite than strength.
On the other hand, the monsters aren’t out of monster by any means.  There’s still lots of Black Sperm, Evil Natural Water is surely sloshing around somewhere,  Vomited Furher Ugly is a pungent threat, and Homeless Emperor is watching proceedings with an amused eye.  I called the monsters the sundew monsters for a reason -- they waste heroes by outlasting their efforts.
The standing heroes are going to need respite, or a diversion, or reinforcements pretty soon or they’re going to all die for real.   Preferably all three.  We’ll take two out of three.
Further notes:  The Cyborg is Listening
The first thing Kuseno says to Genos when the latter comes back after a bruising encounter with a monster is ‘are you alright?’  That we know.  The second thing has to be ‘did you bring me good data?’  Everything that happens to Genos, everything he touches, everything he sees, everything he hears, all that information is recorded for later recall and distillation into useable data.   We’ve been admiring how capable and tough this new upgrade has proven to be.  It’s all hard-won insights, built one on the other.    Does that mean I’m discounting what Genos does?  Hell no.  It’s his extreme courage and willingness to step into the most hopeless situations that has enabled this valuable data to be gathered in the first place.  And it’s his using these wonderful upgrades to push as hard as he can despite the risk that makes it worth Kuseno’s while to stay up late to craft them.  Now I’m super-interested in finding out what new insights the pair will glean from today’s fighting.
Tumblr media
...polite engineer for ‘fuck you’
Sure, like many serious things in One-Punch Man, it initially appears as a gag,  but if you’ve not been paying attention to date, hear this: good data is like gold dust in this world.   And people will kill for it.   As we watch the dissipating contrails where Drive Knight was as he carries his precious samples home, don’t way you weren’t warned.

Manga vs Anime: Episode 26 “Stenka”
Sorry, I’m beyond late, maybe because after such a nice start I was greatly disappointed. Anyway let’s start with Ep 2 of the 3rd series… which is the 26 Golden Kamuy animated episode with a warning...
Tumblr media
Some data first.
This episode last 23:40 minutes and has an opening and an the ending. It covers 4 chapters of the manga, chap 144, 145, 146 & 147 for a total of around 77 pages (I’m discounting the covers) basically covering most of Vol 15.
The episode is titled ‘Stenka’, which is an original title for the anime, chap 140 being ‘The match of the century’, chap 141 being ‘Mister Loose Cannon’, chap 142 being ‘Russian-style steam bath, Banya’ and chap 143 being ‘Don’t kill the sea lions!’.
And now into the anime.
AFTER THE MATCH
Manga & Anime: Gansoku is about to leave the place in which Sugimoto and the others have fought when Sugimoto stops him. The two exchange some small talk, Gansoku congratulating for the match and Sugimoto asking him if he’ll take part to the stenka too, then proposes an handshake which he uses to value Gansoku’s strength. Gansoku leaves and Sugimoto is joined by the others but refuses to tell what has just happened although Tsukishima looks at Gansoku suspiciously.
There are just some minor differences:
- In the manga is implied Gansoku is walking away while in the anime he’s standing there, perfectly still.
- In the manga we see Sugimoto in the distance so it’s impossible to judge his expression. In the anime the camera is much closer to him but he has his hat so low it’s impossible to see his eyes, which makes him look threatening.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Gansoku seems a lot more friendly in the manga, looking at Sugimoto with shining eyes. Sugimoto has a speculative expression as he talks to him, but he’s smiling and his question causes Gansoku’s eyes to darken. However they go back on friendly expressions when they handshake. In the anime they add a close up of Sugimoto’s eyes and then of Gansoku, making the atmosphere more tense also with the use of the music. They don’t show Sugimoto’s expression as he talks, in favour of showing he’s moving closer. Gansoku also remains serious, smiling only for a moment and we won’t see Sugimoto’s smiling expression until we’re shown they’re holding hands and their… aura? Is all around the place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga we can speculate Tanigaki and the others came there walking calmly. In the anime they’re shown walking hurriedly, searching for Sugimoto.
My two cents: The anime idea to make Sugimoto look threatening when he calls Gansoku is interesting because it might lead the viewer into thinking he’ll attack him, surprising the viewer when it doesn’t happen… however they dragged the tense atmosphere too long, with Gansoku being too serious and Sugimoto too threatening. Even the others reaching the place running seems to set up the scene for something big and scary that just… doesn’t happen. While it’s an interesting interpretation of the scene  and an idea to raise tension, overall it lacks the atmosphere of the manga, in which Sugi and Gansoku appreciated each other, which will end with Gansoku and Sugimoto being friends and ultimately all the big tension of the anime ends up in nothing. But well, they tried and the flame effect is nice.
THE OPENING STARTS HERE
THE TAVERN
Manga & Anime: The Russian guy who’s in charge of the stealing of the dog tells Sugimoto’s group that rumours about them have spread and people view them as the guys who might beat the tattooed man. As the tattooed man will fight that night the Russian guy wants Sugimoto’s group to lose on purpose so he’ll gain a lot of money. To Cikapasi demanding to have the dog back he answer he’ll do so after they lose the match. At this Sugimoto attacks him, pushing him on the ground and ripping his hair. Tanigaki asks how Karafuto Ainu punish people and Enonoka explains they cut fingertips. The Russian says he’ll tattle them out to the tattooed man. The boys are not impressed. Koito says first they’ll slice his fingertips one by one until they get the dog back and then kill and bury him. Then they’ll go to the stenka, drag the tattooed man outside and kill and skin him. The Russian guy tells them he has info on Kiro. Tsukishima shows him Kiro’s photo. Sugimoto is interested but Koito would like to start cutting his fingers. Sugimoto tries to stop him, Koito, Tanigaki and Tsukishima agree that the Russian can’t be trusted but Sugimoto says he can’t ignore the man might have info that will take him to Asirpa.
There are just some minor differences:
- In the manga, although it’s Tsukishima who’s speaking, it’s implied the Russian talk in between Tsukishima’s translations (we see his mouth open and the visual tells us he’s saying something). In the anime the Russian’s mouth is always close and Tsukishima does this long, long translation all at once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the anime they added a creepy shoot of Sugimoto’s eyes before he jumps on the Russian.
Tumblr media
- In the manga the Russian is just sweating. In the anime the Russian is drawn completely terrorized, his face becomes blue and his jaw starts to tremble. He shuts his eyes as he screams he has still info on Kiro.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga when Tsukishima shows Kiro’s photo we get a panel with Sugimoto and then Koito says they’ll cut the Russian’s finger. In the anime we move from Tsukishima showing the photo to Koito saying they’ll cut his finger.
- In the manga Sugimoto had a normal expression as he said he couldn’t ignore chances that would lead him to Asirpa, Asirpa being in the background. In the anime he looks like he’s ready to start a fight and there’s no image of Asirpa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- After Sugimoto says he can’t ignore chances to find Asirpa in the anime Koito put away his blade. In the manga there’s no such scene.
Tumblr media
My two cents: I get they wanted to save time not showing the Russian speaking and then Tsukishima translating but the translation is so long it seems impossible the man said all that and then Tsukishima remembered it all perfectly and did a translation. It just feels as Tsukishima is monologuing instead than translating. Well, at least they let the guy speak afterward but the start is still pretty weak. To make up for it they handled it pretty well when it was Koito speaking and Tsukishima translation. Tanigaki’s ears are drawn very poorly and the same can be said for Koito in some scenes. I’m not sure what’s up with making Sugimoto’s group so scary. The Russian here is terrorized, where in the manga despite not being in a good position he was still in control. He’s a guy dealing with crime, possibly a criminal himself, and it makes more sense if he can remain calm in such a situation. Even the scene in which they show the Russian the photo in the manga looked less creepy. As Sugimoto was shown in between Tsukishima and Koito we could assume there was a pause in which the Russian had been given the time to speak and said nothing, leading Koito and the others to think he lied when he said he had info. In the anime there’s no such feeling and, although Tsukishima shows him the photo they immediately disbelieve him, making me wonder why showing him the photo in the first place.
PRIOR TO THE NEW MATCH
Manga & Anime: So Sugimoto’s group shows up at the stenka match where Gansoku drops his coat, so that they recognize him for a tattooed convict.
There are just some minor differences:
- In the manga Gansoku’s face is in the dark. In the anime it’s not.
My two cents: Nothing to say here, just that the anime seems to enjoy showing the boys.
WARNING: The anime decided to place in this episode Gansoku’s comments about what’s for him stenka and info about his past. In the manga this was showed previously, while Sugimoto’s group was having its first stenka match.
GANSOKU’S TWO CENTS ABOUT STENKA AND HIS PAST
Manga & Anime: Gansoku explains for him stenka is a form of self expression then explains that since he chose to express himself through violence the world didn’t understood him and he ended up in jail. But he was happy there due to it being a violent place, with Ushiyama being the only one capable to stop him, although he enjoyed the moments in which he stopped Ushiyama
There are just some minor differences:
- In the manga, Gansoku speaks looking straight ahead himself, with his silly excited expression with shining stars around him. In the anime he’s just serious and dramatical, looking up in the air.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My two cents: In the manga of course they use just one image to show Gansoku being restrained by Ushiyama but using a still image in the anime for this scene instead than… well, animating it, feels pretty bad. I mean they animated more the scene in which Gansoku is receiving the praises of the convicts for beating Ushiyama than that scene.
BEFORE THE FIGHT
Manga & Anime: Gansoku removes his glasses and turn and Tsukishima and Co recognize him for the man who was talking with Sugimoto. They question Sugimoto who doesn’t reply so Tsukishima figures Sugimoto just wanted to fight with him. Tanigaki asks what are they going to do with the match, if they’re gonna lose on purpose and Tsukishima points out Sugimoto clearly doesn’t want to do it. Koito reminds them if they don’t they’ll lose the chance to get info on Kiro. Sugimoto says he has a brilliant plan to solve everything so they can fight as hard as they want.
My two cents: The transition between this scene and the last is so bad we don’t get we’ve switched. It’s not smooth, it’s confusing.
CIKAPASI AND ENONOKA IN ACTION
Manga & Anime: Cikapasi and Enonoka see the Russian that helped stealing the dog enter in a house. They think the Russian is there to guard the dog and plan to get it back themselves.
My two cents: This scene is very short but the anime paid attention to show the characters’ expressions and this is good.
THE FIGHT START
Manga & Anime: The fight starts. Sugimoto gets punched so hard he flies back. Gansoku says Sugimoto should tell him more about himself. Sugimoto reacts by punching him back.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga we’re shown first the ceiling of the place as the fighters are told they can fight, then we’re shown Sugimoto flying back. In the anime we get an image of Gansoku while he’s still, then we’re shown Sugimoto’s group getting ready and then Sugimoto running toward Gansoku while the other remain still, before Sugimoto flies back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga, after Gansoku tells Sugimoto to teach him more about him, we see Sugimoto punching Gansoku silently. In the anime were first shown Sugimoto looking furious and making a roaring sound before punching Gansoku, still roaring.
Tumblr media
My two cents: Well, they expanded the scene, which is not wrong per se but showing Sugimoto being the only one to charge while the others remain where they are feels a little off. In the manga at least we don’t know how Sugimoto got himself punched back.
CHAP 144 ENDS HERE
THE STENKA CONTINUES
Manga and anime: The guy keeps on fighting but Sugimoto is starting to show weird signs, he falls on one knee, when another fighter stumbles against him he punches him, later he starts repeating ‘I’. Meanwhile Tsukishima, Koito and Tanigaki have beaten the other Russians so Gansoku tells them they should attack him together. He still pushes them all on the ground and then enjoys the people cheering for him when Sugimoto kicks him, causing him to fall. The people complain, saying it’s not stenka while Sugimoto begins to attack Tanigaki and Co as well. The people also try to attack Sugimoto and get punched away. Chaos ensues.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga Sugimoto is shown standing on his own. In the anime Tanigaki sort of supports him, resting his hand on Sugimoto’s shoulder. Also, Koito and Tsukishima’s positions are switched.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My two cents: Again the anime decides to go for a still image when the people has also joined the fight.
Tumblr media
Really, guys this is animation not a manga. Animate those scenes! The rest is more or less faithful enough, although Sugimoto is creepier than the manga and there’s also more blood spraying around. On a personal note the ‘ore-ore’ scene reminded me more of “Hokuto no Ken” than of “Jojo no kimyou na bouken”, from which it was meant to be inspired but maybe it’s just me (and, after all, Jojo was inspired by Ken…).
SUGIMOTO LOSES IT
Manga and Anime: In the general chaos Sugimoto grabs a sickle (and then a hammer) and wounds Koito mumbling about the 7th division. Tsukishima understands Sugimoto lost it and warns Koito, the people start escaping, afraid of Sugimoto who, with the sickle, attack Gansoku, mumbling about the gold. Gansoku understands he was after his tattoo and escapes.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga the reference to the hammer and sickle presented in the USSR flag is much more marked as their position seems to match it while it’s not exactly so similar in the anime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My two cents: There’s another still image where the people are meant to be running away. -_-
Tumblr media
Really this doesn’t make the scene ‘resembling the manga’ this seems just a lack of will to animate it. The background music though, is Russian sounding and somehow makes the scene fun. For the rest even here the anime had been faithful enough. Also there are again two still images for the escaping Gansoku but as they seem to put more emphasys on the scene they might work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That and I found them pretty.
OUTSIDE
Manga and anime: The people are escaping. Tsukishima, Tanigaki and Koito follow the escaping Gansoku, deciding to leave the dangerous Sugimoto on his own. Meanwhile Gansoku is attacked by a wolverine. Tsukishima and Co save him but then they have to escape from the wolverine together and hide in a banya.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga they showed first the scene in which Tsukishima and Co though they lost Gansoku and then the scene of Gansoku being observed (and later attacked) by the wolverine. In the anime they first showed the scene of Gansoku being seen by the wolverine and then the one of the boys searching for him.
- The anime cut Koito saying the wolverine is dangerous.
- In the manga the last to enter in the cabin is Tanigaki. In the anime they show Koito keeping the door open and being the last to enter in it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the anime we see the door closing as the wolverine is jumping toward it, giving the impressing the door was slammed on the wolverine face. No such scene is in the manga.
- The manga devotes a background panel to the boy wondering what to do. In the anime they stretched the scene, giving it an excessive dramatic atmosphere, adding Tanigaki who desperately repead ‘hot’ as if he was being burned alive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My two cents: There’s AGAIN a still image where the people are meant to be running away. -_-
Tumblr media
Guys really, making it tremble and panning over it doesn’t count as animating it. I see MMV better done. It’s a bit ridicule how Tsukishima, who has already grabbed a wand, stops to talk with Koito and then runs to fight the wolverine. It makes no sense Koito keeps the door open to everyone considering he’s a spoiled prince. It would have been more logic for him, as he’s the fastest runner, to reach it first and get inside and, if someone were to stay out to keep it open, that one would have to be Tsukishima. I guess they made the scene in which they wondered what to do deliberately dramatic to contrast with the scene of them posing but it felt out of place. They seemed to be dying for the hotness in a moment and the next they were posing. On the other side at least the anime paid attention to their expressions.
On a personal note though I preferred the banya’s last scene of the manga but maybe it’s just me.

CHAPTER 145 ENDS HERE.
THE ANIME PLACES HERE AN EYECATCH
ENONOKA AND CIKAPASI’S PLAN
Manga and anime: Enonoka and Cikapasi find the house of the man who helped stealing Enonoka’s dog. They would like to free the dog but the door of the room it is in, is closed. Cikapasi consider shooting at it but then they manage to see the keys inside the Russian’s house.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga Enonoka and Cikapasi see the Russian going inside his house, peek inside and realize the dog is not there. This scene is cut from the anime.
- In the manga Cikapasi and Enonoka see the Russian coming back into his house after having gone to fed the dog. This scene is cut in the anime.
- The anime added Enonoka asking Cikapasi what they were supposed to do.
- The anime cut Enonoka and Cikapasi noticing the keys.
My two cents: While it’s possible to get a general idea of what’s going on, due to the cuts the scene is a bit more confusing.Enonoka asking Cikapasi what they were meant to do made me think to an attempt to portray her as the helpless girl in need to have ‘a man’ (well, a boy in this case) tell her what to do. I didn’t really apprecciate it.
INSIDE THE BANYA
Manga & Anime: The wolverine keeps hanging around the cabin so that Tsukishima and Co can’t leave. Meanwhile Gansoku makes more stream, and hits the other with a bundle of leafy silver birch twigs, the Venik. He claims since they want to kill him for his tattoo this will be a test of endurance about who’ll escape first. The guys attack him with the Venik, encouraged by Gansoku.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga Gansoku has an expression similar to the one of a shojo heroine when he says they’re there to kill him. In the anime he’s just serious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga after Gansoku tells the guys to come at him at the same time they do it, although Tsukishima wonders what he’s doing. In the anime the guys are shown standing still. The scene of them attacking him will be later.
Tumblr media
My two cents: They drew it differently from the anime and it’s kind of less fun but at least it more or less drives home the story.
ENONOKA AND CIKAPASI IN ACTION
Manga & Anime: Enonoka and Cikapasi try recovering the key but end up awaking the Russian who gets out of the house attempting to reach them and is knocked out by their trap. Then Cikapasi shots at the locket closing the shed. Sugimoto hears the shoot.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga the Russian is knocked out in a rather serious manner. In the anime the scene is funnier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My two cents: When the anime shows people fighting, he recycles some scenes. This is not so great. On a more positive note I somehow like the colouring of the scene. Also I’m fine with cutting the part of Sugimoto saying they’ve to take part to it and Tsukishima being surprised by the ‘we’ because it will be discussed later, both in the manga and in the anime so in the anime it would become redundant.
BACK AT THE BANYA
Manga and anime: The boys are hitting Gansoku with the Venik. Koito wonders if this is part of Sugimoto’s plan and Tsukishima denies it.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga Tsukishima wondered what he was doing previously. In the anime he does it now.
- In the manga we see Gansoku and the boys hitting him, all in a single panel. In the anime we see the Venik being waved as Gansoku screams ‘more’ then we see Tsukishima and then Koito and Tanigaki hitting… but we don’t see Gansoku.
My two cents: I’m not really sure why the anime didn’t show Gansoku being hit. It’s not big but it’s weird.
ENONOKA AND CIKAPASI’S ADVENTURE
Manga and anime: Enonoka and Cikapasi are escaping with the dog, Enonoka using ski and letting herself be dragged by her dog, Cikapasi clinging to her. They see Sugimoto but he scared them and so they escape, chased by him. The wolverine senses them and runs toward them. Enonoka’s dog turns abruptly, causing Cikapasi to fall. Cikapasi, using the rifle, keeps it at bay. Ryu tries to distract the wolverine as Cikapasi tries to take a bullet for Tanigaki’s rifle. Sugimoto attacks the wolverine, the two of them fighting. Cikapasi charges the rifle and Tanigaki helps him fire and kill the wolverine. Gansoku then shows up to fight with Sugimoto.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga the panels show the boys together, then we get two panels placing more focus on Tsukishima first and Koito after, as we never saw them without clothes. In the anime they pan on all the bodies equally, starting with Sugimoto, then Tsukishima, Tanigaki and, at last, Koito.
- In the manga when he appeared, Sugimoto was much closer to Enonoka and Cikapasi and then he started running after them. In the anime he’s distant and only walks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga it’s the dog which turned abruptly, in the anime it’s Enonoka.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga only one bullet fall (there’s the shadow of only one bullet) although they seem two because the bullet is likely moving. In the anime two bullets fall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga there’s no sign of Cikapasi trembling, he’s just sweating and having some troubles correctly inserting the bullet. In the anime he trembles a lot.
- In the manga when Sugimoto attacks the wolverine the wolverine just avoid the blow and bites him. Only when Sugimoto attacks him with the hammer it jumps away. In the anime it jumps away immediately and therefore it won’t be close enough to bite him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga the wolverine was between Sugimoto and Cikapasi. In the anime Sugimoto is between the wolverine and Cikapasi so, to reach Cikapasi, the wolverine gets around Sugimoto.
- In the manga the wolverine was charging at Cikapasi when the latter shoot him. In the anime it either charges at Sugimoto or plans to circle around him to charge Cikapasi… maybe it’s the latter as ultimately it was pretty close to him when it was shoot in the anime.
- The anime adds a scene in which Sugimoto has calmed down then turns toward where Gansoku is coming.
Tumblr media
- In the manga Gansoku’s genitals were shadowed but you could notice their presence. In the anime, they seems absent.
My two cents: In the anime Sugimoto is too distant and, as he keeps walking, the two kids should have lost him immediately. The fact he doesn’t chase the kids fails to deliver in that moment Sugimoto was potentially dangerous for them too, which, added to how the anime depicts Sugimoto in between Cikapasi and the wolverine gives the idea Sugimoto was there to save Cikapasi and not that he was in a mental state in which he attacked everything that moved. I don’t really like making the abrupt turn Enonoka’s fault. The fact it was the dog’s fault was meant to contrast with how Enonoka’s dog is scared of the wolverine while Ryu will face it to save Cikapasi... and later in the story Ryu will become the head of the sled dogs. In short this is detrimental to Ryu’s characterization because it doesn’t show how superior he is. The anime somehow seems to depict Sugimoto more in control than he was in the manga. The one/two bullet/bullets mistake on the surface isn’t terrible but showing us one bullet was Noda’s way to remind us the single bullet theory that moved Nihei. As Cikapasi will inherit his rifle this was relevant.
CHAPTER 146 ENDS HERE.
SUGIMOTO & GANSOKU’S FIGHT
Manga and anime: Gansoke and Sugimoto fight, Gansoku realizing Sugimoto is filled with rage but not directed at him. Koito wonders if they should help, Tsukishima asks who of the two and Tanigaki points out how Sugimoto is vital to get Asirpa back so they can’t let him take more punches. As they fight Gansoku asks Sugimoto why, who and what he’s angry at. As Sugimoto thinks at his past it turns out he’s angry at himself, thinking he was useless to the people he loved. Gansoku tells him to forgive himself as he’s giving his all. Then the ice below them breaks, causing Gansoku, Sugimoto, Tanigaki, Tsukishima and Koito to fall into the water under the ice. Sugimoto goes back to normal and the freezing group rushes into the banya
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the anime the add a scene with Sugimoto dropping the sickle and the hammer before tossing himself at Gansoku and punching him. In the manga it’s never showed when Sugimoto dropped those two objects, maybe when fighting the wolverine.
- In the anime Tanigaki seems much more calm and in control than in the manga when he said they’ve to stop the fight.
- In the anime Gansoku punches Sugimoto’s stomach so hard it causes him to throw up. No such scene is in the manga.
- There’s a huge divergence between what we see in the manga and what we see in the anime in regard to Sugimoto’s memories. In the manga we’ve Umeko telling him to take her with him, Toraji’s corpse and Asirpa as she told him she was afraid of what she would do if Nopperabou were to be her father. Then he remembers himself escaping from Umeko, the blood on Toraji’s photo, himself promising he would be with Asirpa until the end, Nopperabo being shoot and Asirpa seeing the scene. As we see those scene Sugimoto calls Umeko, Toraji and Asirpa, before saying he’s useless. In the anime we see an image of a blind Umeko with her child on her back, Toraji’s corpse, the bloodied photo of Toraji and Umeko, Asirpa walking in the snow with Retar, Sugimoto and Asirpa in the deerskin with Sugimoto crying, Sugimoto failing to grab Asirpa’s hand in Abashiri, Nopperabou being shoot and Asirpa watching the scene, all this as Sugimoto first makes intelligible sounds then says Asirpa and then tells he’s useless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- The anime adds an image before Gansoku where to try to punch Sugimoto in which Sugimoto’s eyes light up and he seems really dangerous.
Tumblr media
- In the manga Gansoku’s punch barely miss Sugimoto as it went in between his head and his shoulder. In the anime it’s below his arm, possibly completely off his body.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga we see Gansoku’s knee hit the ground, in the anime they give much more focus to how Gansoku can’t sustain himself any longer.
- In the manga it’s unclear what caused the ice to break, maybe it was Gansoku’s knee itself, in the anime it’s the boys running toward Sugimoto and Gansoku.
- In the manga the ice breaks in a realistic way, and only in a small measure, in the anime the ice breaks causing a huge hole and an excessive splash of water, likely for humoristic purposes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the manga it’s implied Gansoku and Sugimoto hurries to walk away toward the banya while Tsukishima is busy pulling up Koito. In the anime they just stand there, trembling and saying they’ve to go to the banya. Actually somehow everyone is still, even Tsukishima seems to just stand there unable to pull up Koito…
My two cents: While it’s good to show Sugimoto dropping sickle and hammer instead than causing them to magically disappear the execution is dumb as Sugimoto grabbed them because he took them when he was too out of it to realize he couldn’t use them and even used them to attack Sugi previously so him dropping them now for no good reason doesn’t make sense. Tanigaki being so calm yet doing nothing to stop the thing makes no sense. The scene of Sugimoto remembering why he feels useless are a mess. In the manga is clear he feels useless to Umeko, because he couldn’t take her with him, with Toraji, whom he couldn’t save, with Asirpa, with whom he couldn’t be like he had instead promised, never mentioning he couldn’t save her father either. In the anime, although there’s a little space for Umeko and Toraji the implication seems more he only feels guilty for not being able to save Toraji or bringing the money to his widow… and considering the small time this receive it doesn’t even feel that big, Umeko’s importance completely removed as the anime decided to cut her from Sugimoto’s life and didn’t even try to ‘recover’ her in the 4th OAD. All the focus is on Asirpa, the only person he calls, first showing Asirpa with Retar and then her with him in the deerskin (and although Sugimoto was crying in that scene which the anime mostly messed up, it wasn’t because he was feeling useless), then the anime fails to remember Sugimoto actually hesitated in grabbing Asirpa in Abashiri so that she could escape safely, and didn’t just fail to grab her as the image seems to imply. All this basically pushes forward that what really matters to Sugi is Asirpa with Toraji being very minor. The anime clearly didn’t recognize the scene in which Asirpa told him she was scared and he promised to stay with her, and, apart for Nopperabou’s death, plastered in the scene wrong moments that weren’t related to Sugimoto feeling useless. To make up for it the anime seemed really focused in showing us it was Sugimoto who utterly defeated Gansoku, placing a lot of focus on Sugi in the moment before he punches him and making Gansoku miss in a more obvious manner. The group remaining still after they fell in the water is dumb. If they couldn’t move because they were trembling too much they would remain stuck there and die of hypothermia, they wouldn’t magically manage moving. Well, at least the scene of Sugimoto screaming the water was cold was good.
WARNING: The manga placed later the scene of Sugimoto not remembering his own plan.
ENONOKA PRAISING CIKAPASI
Manga & Anime: Enonoka praises Cikapasi for taking down the wolverine, although Cikapasi admits he did it thanks to Tanigaki’s help.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga we can’t see Enonoka’s expression and Cikapasi only seems embarrassed in the anime we do see Enonoka who seems very happy and Cikapasi blushes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My two cents: I’m not sure why they had to show Cikapasi flushing if not to make ‘cuter’ his interaction with Enonoka.
WARNING: This scene in the manga was placed earlier.
SUGIMOTO’S PLAN
Manga & Anime: After an image showing Gansoku, Sugimoto, Tanigaki, Tsukishima and Koito enjoying the banya, Cikapasi and Enonoka spying them, Koito asks Sugimoto which was his plan and Sugimoto admits he has forgot it.
My two cents: Although in the anime too Cikapasi and Enonoka are peeking on the boys they’re hardly visible, as if the anime wanted to hide them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SUGIMOTO AND GANSOKU TALK
Manga & Anime: Sugimoto and Gansoku talk, Sugimoto telling him he doesn’t want to kill him but others might therefore Gansoku should let them make a copy of the tattoo and find the gold, so Gansoku won’t be in danger any longer. Tsukishima suggests him to leave Karafuto and go to Russia to pursue the stenka. Sugimoto agrees then informs Sugimoto that he met the Ainu girl whose name Sugimoto said as she was with another convict, and how Gansoku thinks she was talking about Sugimoto.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the anime prior to Sugimoto talking, they added Gansoku asking him if they should continue fighting as Sugimoto still wants his tattoo.
Tumblr media
- In the manga Sugimoto looks straight at Gansoku as he says he doesn’t want to kill him, while in the anime he’s looking at him sideway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- In the anime they added Koito and co complaining about Gansoku causing more steam
My two cents: Maybe it’s just me but I get a different impression for this scene from the anime, compared to the manga. In the manga I got the feeling Sugimoto didn’t want to kill GANSOKU (because he grew to like him), in the anime the impression is more that Sugimoto doesn’t want to kill people to get their skin. Maybe it’s just me.
WARNING: In the manga this scene was placed after Asirpa told Ogata not to shoot tough enemies in the head.
FLASHBACK
Manga: Shiraishi tells Asirpa they should let the other guy do information gathering and they should just have some tea. As they’re seated on a table Shiraishi tells Asirpa the 7th division is probably still storming Abashiri so they should go search for bodies once the 7th division has left and that Asirpa shouldn’t dwell too much on it. Asirpa confesses she had to overcome her father’s death once before but she doesn’t know how to cope with the fact he betrayed the Ainu. Shiraishi assures her there should be an explanation, that somebody should know it and that she should stand by her father. Asirpa meekly agree. Shiraishi then goes and says that although he doesn’t have proof he thinks Sugimoto might be still alive as he wouldn’t die that easily. Gansoku, who’s eavesdropping them ears Asirpa saying that there’s no way Sugimoto would be dead as he’s Sugimoto the immortal so of course he’s alive. The flashback ends showing Sugimoto smiling as he hears what Gansoku overheard Asirpa saying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anime: Gansoku is in a teahouse, listening to Shiraishi and Asirpa talk. Shiraishi says in the past he said he couldn’t see him dying but… Asirpa asks him what he means and a depressed Shiraishi says since Sugimoto didn’t follow them there maybe he is… Shiraishi trails off, implying Sugimoto might be dead. Asirpa scolds him saying Sugimoto is Sugimoto the immortal. The flashback ends showing Sugimoto smiling as he hears what Gansoku overheard Asirpa saying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My two cents: This is the second worst adaptation of this episode after the flashbacks when Sugimoto was thinking he was useless. In the manga Shiraishi was trying hard to support Asirpa and cheer her up, telling her not to worry, that her father should have had reasons for doing what he did and she’ll find them out, that she should stand by her father, that he believed Sugimoto was alive. On the other side Asirpa was still very troubled by the situation and worried about her father, but, like Shiraishi, believed/wanted to believe Sugimoto was alive, so Shiraishi didn’t have to cheer her up on that. In the anime they actually used this scene as inspiration for the mess that’s the final bit of Ep 24, so that Shiraishi and Asirpa would say the last two quotes, that Shiraishi couldn’t think Sugimoto would die and Asirpa would remark there’s no way Sugimoto would die as he’s immortal. This creates troubles because, of course, unless they retconned that scene out of existence they couldn’t have it here as well, same as before (proof that the animators didn’t think a third series would be done as they didn’t think in advantage at the troubles that change in ep 24 would cause). So what they did with the whole thing? Removed completely Shiraishi’s supportive behaviour, turning him into the one who needs to be reassured Sugimoto is alive, removed completely any talk about Wilk (as evidently in the anime he’s not important despite Asirpa doing all this travel to discover about her father and of course she wouldn’t be sad about his death or his actions, caring only about Sugimoto) to focus solely on Sugimoto, depicting how Asirpa is the only one persuaded Sugimoto is still alive… because he’s Sugimoto the immortal and they have such a deep bond, made more remarked by how the anime conveniently keeps on cutting away Umeko’s role. Really, all this is a horrible choice to adapt a scene, it takes away part of the characterization of both Shiraishi and Asirpa to again focus on Sugimoto and Asirpa’s bond as if that was the only thing that matters in the story. I was hoping the anime would stop doing this, especially considering how Umeko takes an important role in what happens on the ice between Ogata and Asirpa but now I’m starting to expect the anime will cut that scene entirely or twist it so that Ogata’s fanfic will be about Toraji. Will Ogata says Toraji’s name was Yuusaku? -_-
CHAPTER 147 ENDS HERE.
WARNING: In the manga the following scenes were placed prior to the flashback scene and therefore would still be part of chap 147.
SEA LION HUNTING
Manga & Anime: Ogata shoots a sea lion in the head but the latter jumps in the water and tries to swim away. Kiroranke warns Asirpa who shows up with a harpoon.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga we see Ogata is puzzled by the sea lion swimming away as if Ogata had never hit him. In the anime his face is expressionless and he shows no sign of surprise
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My two cents: Deciding not to show Ogata’s surprise at seeing how the sea lion was unaffected by his bullet is clearly dumb, it makes it look as if Ogata hadn’t realized it or had expected it. They had put a lot of emphasis in how Asirpa was aggressive as she went after the sea lion. Basically I don’t really get why the anime kept the fact she was sad when she was at Enonoka. They removed her sadness for what happened to her father and showed her confident Sugimoto was alive… before showing us this. Honestly she had no reason to feel down when at Enonoka’s house especially since, as they didn’t retcon the ending of Ep 24 out of existence, Asirpa was already confident back there about Sugimoto being alive. *sighs* The anime is doing better than in the past series but they’re still trying to push the Sugimoto/Asirpa angle too much to the plot’s detriment.
THE ENDING STARTS HERE
EATING THE SEA LION
Manga & Anime: As Kiroranke and Asirpa prepare the sea lion they’ve killed they explains Ogata and Shiraishi about them. They eat the meat raw, Asirpa asking if it’s hinna. Ogata observes even if he shoots it in the head, he couldn’t kill it. Asirpa explains him sea lions have thick skulls like brown bears so if one wants to kill them, he needs to shoot the eyes or the ears, suggesting Ogata to not aim for the hear next time he wants to kill a strong one. Kiro smiles at seeing her in a good mood.
There are minor cuts and changes:
- In the manga Asirpa seems to offer the meat to Ogata (who in the panel is much more visible than Shiraishi) and worry because he gave him a too big slice which he has troubles chewing (as he’s the only one shown chewing it). Her ‘is it hinna?’ question, made as she looks at Ogata, closer to him than to Shiraishi who’s behind Ogata, also seems directed to Ogata although we can see Shiraishi too also had some meat. In the anime she seems to be offering it to both Shiraishi and Ogata, the anime focusing on Shiraishi eating it and then showing Shiraishi and Ogata having troubles eating it drawing Shiraishi in the forefront and Ogata slightly behind him. Her question about chewing seems directed to both and the same goes for her hinna question, which she does without looking at them as she feed herself a slice of meat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- The anime adds a scene of Ogata cleaning his mouth with his hand.
- In the manga Ogata is seated when he says he couldn’t kill the sea lion. In the anime it’s implied he’s still standing.
- In the manga Asirpa reports how, if one wants to kill a sea lion he has to aim for the eyes or the ears and how there are folk tales between quarrelling bears and sea lion. There’s also an information box adding info. All this is cut in the anime.
- In the manga we see just Kiro smiling. In the anime we first see him working on cutting the sea lion while smiling then turning toward Asirpa always smiling.
My two cents: One of the cardinal points in the relationship between Asirpa and Ogata in the manga is how Asirpa keeps feeding Ogata and asking him if the food is ‘hinna’ or asking him to say ‘citatap’ and Ogata remaining silent. This makes the moment in which Ogata FINALLY says ‘hinna’ very relevant in Asirpa’s eyes. The anime destroyed this making this scene a mere group interaction in which there was more focus on Asirpa and Shiraishi than Asirpa and Ogata. I’m not sure why the anime removed how they’ve to shoot sea lion in the eyes or ears, as anime viewers will lose the irony of Ogata being shoot in the eye (you can view the quarrelling sea lion as Ogata and the bear as Sugimoto as Sugimoto was already compared more than once to a bear).
TO SUM IT ALL
Honestly, I was hoping to say this was a good episode for most of it. Sure, the art is not perfect (but it will probably fixed for the dvd release) and there was the abuse of still images when animated images would work better, but it seemed to work, going as far as to add small details until... until I saw the mess they did around the end.
Complete removal of Umeko’s importance for Sugimoto, reducing her merely to Toraji’s widow even when this is detrimental to Sugimoto’s characterization, cutting off mentions of Wilk and how what he did affects Asirpa, which becomes a ridicule idea since Asirpa is going through this trip exactly in hope she’ll discover the truth, excessive remarking of the bond between Sugimoto and Asirpa even when this is detrimental to Shiraishi or Asirpa or Sugimoto’s characterization, cutting of Ogata’s role and of his relation with Asirpa in a way that’s detrimental to his characterization. Then there’s the attempt to make Sugimoto more morally perfect than the poor guy actually is, which again affect his characterization.
All those things are things important for the plot and the characterization of the characters, they shouldn’t be cut as they’re much more relevant than the minor scenes the anime added.
Long story short, while for the most part is not a bad adaptation, it made some very poor choices on relevant scenes and this is VERY bad.

Reading One Piece pt 147: 170 Countries
Chapter 383
Thoughts:
- Heh, Luffy calls Freddy cow. It’s the hair, isn’t it
- Freddy says something
- “This sort of thing… is a global-scale grand offence” ok, I’m a little subdued. We are playing with the big boys now
- But also, um, what do you expect Luffy to do here, Freddy. For him to say “oh, sorry, I didn’t think it through, my apologies”, tip his hat and politely leave? What’s the point
- With Straw Hats
- Aww, Chopper is talking with sea horse (Sodom, I think)
- They call Franky “bro” too!
- Aww to everything here
- They are still being shot at but who cares
- Hm?
- WHERE THE HECK DID SOGEKING GO!?
- *facepalm* they didn’t notice Usopp’s not there. Some friends you are
- Galley-ga is still kicking butts
- Aww, Paulie thinks about Luffy. Please stop reading to absorb the feels
- Haha, go get them, rope guy
- Freddy and Luffy again
- Lore!
- “In the oceans of this world… we boast influence in more than 170 affiliated countries” Ok, that SOUNDS like a lot but think about it. So far, practically every island we encountered was a kingdom of some sorts, or at least pretty self-governed. It would give us 170 island-countries minimum, and we all know One Piece world is way bigger that that. There sure are countries that have whole archipelagos to govern but this all is still pretty island-based, right? So 170 countries doesn’t sound like that many to me.
- (My working theory (that I just thought of) is that World Government controls all of East and North Blue and lots of Grand Line, but almost none of South and West Blue. I think so because we were in East Blue, are on Grand Line, and heard of North Blue from important characters (read Sanji and Norland), but got nothing on South and West except their names. Also I don’t think we’ll get to these seas. That manga may have 1000 chapters but Straw Hats still can’t teleport, it would take too long to get there in believable manner and I assume there is plot still to make and happen.)
- “When you invaded this island, it meant you decided to revolt against all of the affiliated countries!” Ok, from THAT point of view 170 countries is A LOT. I would be running away already. But, Freddy, bold of you to assume Luffy plans that far ahead, he just wants to rescue his friends. Also, as a future Pirate King he would have to fight them all eventually, he can as well start now
- “You’ll be marked criminals” they already are, man
- Fight already
- “Somehow, this time… I don’t think I’m gonna lose!” YEAH LUFFY! PUNCH HIM
- Ahahahaha :D :D :D
- Freddy, you’re too weak for him
- :D
- Meanwhile, Straw Hats are worring about Usopp
- Aww, Zoro is reassuring Nami. Listen to this:
“As we’ve gone through each island, all of us have been slowly getting stronger, even if we haven’t realized it. He, too, with every island he’s visited, has overcome death. We don’t have anyone in our group who would die so easily!”
- Ok, on closer reading it’s not so “aww” as I imagined but the sentiment is still there
- Aaaaaa! Sodom got shot!!!
- Oh
- Sodom is done for
- “He says “GO!””
- They took the other sea horse. Goodbye, Sodom
Great. I have feels about a horse now.

I 100% agree with your assessment on the Overhaul arc in bnha. Started series when that was the most recent arc and completely lost interest in the series halfway through. Trying to get started again, though. What would you change about the arc as a whole?
first off, anon, I hope I haven’t inadvertently spoiled anything! you said you’re trying to get back into it now, so just a heads up that this post is also going to contain spoilers for the end of the arc, though that’s probably obvious lol.
also, now that I’m a dozen chapters past it, I’m very happy to say things are moving along smoothly again and it reminds me of the “old” BnHA. all of the little things I missed so much are back. so it does get better! I’m really pushing to get fully caught up with the manga myself now.
so now! regarding this question, there are really two ways I could answer. because truthfully, the most honest answer I could give to “what would you change about this arc?” is “I wouldn’t have had it in the first place” lol. but that’s just me. even if I took out all of the stuff that annoyed me, even if it was more cleanly executed, this arc was just never going to be one of my favorites. it explores some themes that are important, but aren’t really connected to the things I enjoy the most about the series. the focus is too narrow at the expense of a lot of my faves who got excluded. and the tone is just too dark. which isn’t to say I don’t enjoy angst or when Shit Gets Real, but, how to put this… it has more of a DC vibe than a Marvel one to me. it’s more Dark Knight than Infinity War. and that’s just not quite my taste. so yeah, if we’re talking full control over the manga, I would probably have gutted the entire thing and chucked it completely and done something else. not sure what, but it would have been really different.
but since that answer is kind of a cop-out, here are some of the things I would change if I had to leave the main framework of the arc in place, but was allowed to make smaller changes here and there.
speed up/condense some of the stuff that happens after they encounter Eri and prior to the rescue op. it felt like it took way too long to get to the action. we met Eri in chapter 129 and they didn’t commence the rescue until 9 chapters later. some of the stuff that happens in between is important – especially the All Might stuff and the reveal about Nighteye’s premonition – but Kiri’s fight went on longer than necessary, and then there was no need for them all to meet up, start to plan Eri’s rescue, break off to gather more information, meet up again a few days later, and then finally start the raid. that was too much
I would put Kiri’s flashback in his first fight (the one against knifey stabby man). despite me having just said that the fight went on for too long, lol. but this would be a good way to break it up to make it more interesting. and then I could…
put Ochako and Tsuyu back in the arc and give one of them (or both of them – tag team) Kiri’s second fight instead. if their quirks don’t match up as well against Shield Monk and Chance the Rappa then just change those later two’s quirks to something more interesting. their original quirks were pretty boring anyway
put Ryuukyuu in the arc too bc obviously the girls should be accompanied by a grown-up just like the boys were. that part made sense
speed up Tamaki’s fight (like, don’t even bother trying to make it a challenge. just let Tamaki have his time to shine and kick their asses with no trouble), and have Fat Gum stay with him (just toss in an extra bad guy for him to fight) and speed up the Hot Gum reveal. and then just have the two of them get cut off from the others afterward
and I’m not sure what, but have Aizawa actually do something. as opposed to nothing. which is what he pretty much ended up doing
(ETA: I forgot to account for Kirishima during the raid! so now what I’m thinking is that he ends up making it to the final battle along with Aizawa, Nighteye, and Deku, but ends up being plot abducted along with Aizawa. because that’s a very interesting combination to me, and having to look out for his student might be a good way to nerf Aizawa a bit while still letting him actually fight. then maybe Kirishima gets injured much like what happened with him and Fat Gum. and then Aizawa steps back in to beat whoever it is they’re fighting. because it’s probably someone with a more cinematic quirk than Chrono tbh. anyway. so yeah, bonus Dadzawa feels. eventually he will come to realize that all of his kids are, in fact, problem children.)
actually, you know what, since most of my changes would just be little tweaks to the way things play out once the raid starts, I’ll just write up my version of a chapter-by-chapter outline instead
delete most of chapter 138 and have them get to the basement by the end of that chapter
139, Tamaki and FG stay behind to fight. Tamaki has his flashback and kicks some ass
140, we finish up the fight, with FG’s part of it. but the two of them find their forward progress blocked off by Irinaka. the chapter then ends with the ladies staring down another group of villains
141, a quick flashback shows how Irinaka separated Tsu, Ocha, and Ryuukyuu from the rest. Ryuu takes on the stronger villain (dragon time bitches) while the girls tag team a second bad guy. I have no idea how this would go, and it would take more time and effort and planning on my part than I currently am willing to devote since it’s a hypothetical scenario. but I have no doubt it could be very badass. we’ll give this fight two chapters, maybe, so we can have flashbacks and some more in-depth action. so that’s 141 and 142
143, we get League of Villains antics and flashbacks
144, the conclusion of that, and they take down Irinaka
145 and 146, Mirio vs Overhaul, with the others catching up at the end of 146
147, Aizawa (ETA: and Kirishima) get plot abducted and have their own little fight scene. Nighteye gets impaled trying to help the others escape. make that a bigger moment and show a bit more of his fighting beforehand, and make that the cliffhanger. since I’ve now added Kirishima to the mix, this may possibly take up an extra chapter
148, Deku turns back, activates 20% OFA, and fights Overhaul for a little bit but doesn’t do too well. Eri comes back and offers herself in exchange for the others’ safety. the ladies come barging in to turn the tide, having smashed their way through the labyrinth
149, Deku and Eri vs Overhaul part 1. first half of Overhaul’s flashback. establish his backstory and his plan and the boss’s objections. end with 100% OFA
150, Deku and Eri vs Overhaul part 2. second half of Overhaul’s flashback. show him using his quirk to fuck up the boss. (or at least, show enough to make it clear beyond a doubt that that’s what happened. you had no problem showing what happened to Eri and making that abundantly clear beyond what was necessary.) show him afterwards talking about the boss’s sudden decline in health, and how he’ll be taking charge until he’s healthy. show him monologuing about how this is all for the good of the family and one day the boss will be able to understand that too. “I’m grateful to you, old man. so until then, just sleep.” Deku and Eri take him out; chapter ends with the KO punch
151, the aftermath. basically what we got in 159
152, grand theft auto
153, Nighteye feels
bam. end of arc
so that’s more or less it. if we also speed up the pre-rescue stuff, I think this arc could easily be at least 10 chapters shorter. they can cut most of the villain flashbacks, too, since we don’t really need those. we got along just fine without villain flashbacks for the most part before this arc; only Tomura and Stain had them, and we managed perfectly well. also, give them more interesting designs, seriously. having them all try to stick to a theme/uniform with only slight variations was really dull, and there were moments when I genuinely lost track of who was who. none of the heroes look alike even though they’re all on the same team. it’s fine lol
anyways, so that’s my answer, I guess! thank you for the ask!

THEORY I WANT TO SHARE THAT I HAVE HAD IN MIND FOR AWHILE!
(Genos, Drive Knight, Metal Knight, Mad Cyborg related)
I had a theory awhile ago about Metal Knight and Drive Knight working together secretly, but now something tells me that is not the case whatsoever.
I think it’s strange on how Drive Knight tells Genos to not trust Bofoi off the bat in the beginning from the end of season 1.
Like he’s trying to turn on the possibility of a traitor in the HA in the mind of Genos (so he becomes worked up about it, which works and favors DK later on). Like he needs someone else to do his dirty work for him, due to DK already being seen as suspicious by MK.
(ik ik im stretching here and there but, let me cook)
Tumblr media
But I feel like it’s strange on how Drive Knight tries to pin point it all at Metal Knight particularly because of his absence throughout the Hero Association. Like he’s trying to make it out as HE is the one Genos needs to target particularly. Especially because he’s the only other robot besides the 2 of them being part cyborg.
Does Drive Knight tell this information to anyone else, BESIDES GENOS?
No, not at all (at least that’s just from what I know and see, as he’s a very secretive person).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I think it’s really strange when Drive Knight starts to mention about ‘knowing’ something evil about MK. It’s like he’s inserting himself, or with the people he might work with in secret. Like a new hidden organization yet to be announced in the storyline.
Especially on the first panel below this, when he tells Genos why he’s telling him this. It all seems so manipulative, stalker kind of vibe, trying to share common ground/change his persona to be likable/trust worthy. He’s suspiciously trying a little to hard to gain his trust, he’s trying to be a victim like him, I guess gain sympathy in a way?
It’s like Metal Knight KNOWS he’s in a mentally unstable condition, that Genos seems desperate enough to find out about his ‘mad cyborg’ killer sooner or later.
If someone very important to him happened to die, Genos would whole heartily (maybe with a grain of salt) follow Drive Knights information. (Wanna know what happened? KUSENO DIED, HIS FATHER FIGURE, SOMEONE WHO WAS THERE FOR HIM IN THE BEGINNING. And wanna know what he did after? He used that information from Drive Knight to go after Metal Knight.)
Also-
HOW DOES DRIVE KNIGHT KNOW THAT GENOS’ES VILLAGE AS BEEN DESTROYED BY A ‘mad cyborg’ AS WELL???
NO ONE TOLD HIM??
SO HOW DOES HE EXACTLY KNOW!???
(It’s like out of the blue.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This only furthers my suspicions on Drive Knight.
Especially on the after math of Kuseno’s death and when robots invade nearby cities. In which Genos automatically assumes it’s the work of Metal Knight.
And now with new evidence from the newest webcomic chapter shows Metal Knights base, with no robots forming out of the base itself.
Tumblr media
As all of his robots are by the HA HQ fighting the new other robots.
(Although the chapter isn’t fully translated yet, you can see DK, which proves my previous point up above in the third section.)
I actually think Drive Knight might be working with the association that destroyed Genos’es village. It would explain on why he’s trying to pin the blame on Metal Knight and to not become suspicious from Genos POV, giving him a good alibi for the most part.
And if anything that ‘mad cyborg’ killer could be Drive Knight himself, but that’s a bit of stretch if anything.
(IM PREDICTING IT THO! MARK MY WORDS!!)
————-
A little bit more evidence mentions: (from the top of my head)
-Metal Knight tells Child Emperor to not trust anyone as his final message to him. We are shown a text of both of them used to being friends.
It’s like Metal Knight had to cut his connection towards CE for his safety as he MK already felt he was being watched himself. (But that might change due to the recent chapter that has yet to be translated, can’t fully confirm until then but just putting it out there.)
-Saitama tells Genos to just talk to Metal Knight and ask. But Genos pays no head to that, which might become his biggest mistake.
I feel like this is foreshadowing that once Genos gets close to Bofoi, and Bofoi tells him that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about/tells him straight up he had no relation to the event he speaks of. I feel like Genos might lose it completely even if Saitama is next to him and tries to calm him down.
Like I feel like Genos might almost kill Bofoi but Saitama stops Genos in time. And both start to argue and it’s starts to become sad from there.
-It’s strange how after Genos talked to DK for a bit, then Kuseno dies.
Coincidence? I think not.
It’s like Kuseno was on DK’s hit list for him and the people that he works with/the association that killed Genos’es village. And they had to get rid of him one way or another, it would explain why there was random strong robots there. They were being tracked and targeted, mainly Dr.Kuseno (as if he was getting close to the truth).
Like they to manipulate Genos just so DK could earn his trust and lose a lot of suspicion in his eyes. Even after Kusenos death.
-THE 2 MF ROBOTS FROM SEASON 1 THE SOUND O SONIC EP! (I think)
They appeared after taking back the suit of the big strong bald head guy.
It’s like very early foreshadowing of members for another association, yet to still appear out of thin air. (IMO)
————-
That’s all I wanted to share for now, I’ll edit this if I happen to remember more and study the chapters closely.
If you guys wanna add on or put in you own input, on this theory, please do! I would be happy to hear your opinion!
(And correct me if I’m wrong!!)
Until then, thank you for reading my theory! (If it makes sense 😭)
Have a nice day/night!! :D

One-Punch Man
I read this pretty early on (when it was being translated + the webcomic) and I've talked about his elsewhere but now I want to put my theories here too!
I'm just going to list every one of my speculations first and then explain my thoughts. Also the sentences in italics was my original opinions, just in case that's not clear. Or usually I will say, "I wonder", "here I wrote down", "I had said", etc.
Mar. 2018:
"Scary thought but the manga might not be very long?.". So I don't exactly remember why I thought this but there is a substantial amount of webtoon contnet to cover so I don't think it will end before say 250 chapters. Interesting that I thought this.
"Monster king Orochi is just like Saitama and he could be the most formidable opponent. Or he's just another one hit kill and there's a better opponent in the future." - so he literally was just the latter. I had thought three years ago that maybe he was actually Blast and that's why he couldn't be contacted. But the outcome is so much better. Honestly for a villain he was pretty cool, the only thing about this manga that is sometimes boring is that you know that none of the characters will die. Nobody loses powers either. EDIT: haha I had to make an amendment here. In chapter 143 a hero loses an arm and it seems as if Tanktop Master was crushed. Like- I was wrong lol. Also Darkshine loses his hands not too long after..soo whoops.
The next thing that I posted on twitter said, "what if Blast was manipulated and made into Lord Orochi". And then I had an accompanying image where Psykos confirms that Orochi was once a human being and was "gruesomely perfected". - he is definitely not Blast that's for sure. Blast's introduction was pretty cool. I was shocked for a few hours, it was good. But yeah I don't know who Orochi once was, but that's not true lol.
Oh about my first bullet point, I found another tweet while looking through my twitter and I had said that I thought this was the last arc because it seemed to be the major conflict, but ever since my re-read of the webcomic I think that's no longer true. Not 100% sure though.
The last thing that I said in March, was "what if the final boss is God himself"? This manga is a satire on heroes as it is, but that would be wild and funny as hell. I don't feel like it will happen but idk. Would be cool and totally on par with the insanity of the series lol
April 2018: I guess around this time was when I was able to read the Elder Centipede chapter. Because I mentioned that Blast "fought with it two years ago." At this point I was still running with the idea that Blast died or something else happened. Maybe he was frustrated with the fact that no one else could match up to him. Which now since his reveal in the manga is just not true, he's fighting somthing that's messing space, time and gravity itself.
I think I was just really excited imagining that Blast was greedy or something lol
I also wondered if his "disappearance" was just a big plot hole. Because how was the Hero Association able to know that Blast doesn't want to come into work? Like who was he talking too???
Also the fact that Child Emporer and Metal Knight have outside communications. (Which now we learned was because C.E was his assistant). Made me wonder who was speical enough to get into contact with Blast, it wasn't Tatsumaki because she would have been all haughty about it. lol
June 2018:
Psykos kidnapped a child or maybe a human. I still really wanted to know who Orochi was 😂
I also wondered if someone was looking for him, like they were close friends or if he had a wife and she'll never be able to know what happened. 😟 I don't know what chapter it was but there was a scene where there was a shadow talking to another human. Idk I would've liked that information. :/
March 2021:
This is where I did a big re-read of the series (webcomic and manga). At this point I had been waiting a long time for updates so I forgot a lot of important key details. Like Tatsumaki and Gyoro both say "bald guy" meaning that she heard about this mysterious person (Saitama) and kept that to herself.
Around this time is when I stopped having big speculations and it was more questioning about future chapter events. And then I was just very excited about each new chapter and it mostly turns into reactions.
Before chapter 135 I wondered just how important Fubuki was going to be. I thought it was really interesting that she can sense other life forms, and maybe that her powers were evolving. I still don't know how important she is.
I literally lost my shit at chapter 135 LOL. Like in my notes all I put down was, blast face, BLAST FAEC!!1! And then I also really enjoyed the development between Sweet Mask and Zombieman in this chapter.
Ch. 138 notes: What the- I've got no words. Ya'll need to experience reading this chapter. It has the coolest lore I've seen from this manga yet. Like they connected to another dimension. Can you tell that I was really excited at this point? lol
Ch. 139: *screaming* and that's it, that's the notes lol jk. Here I wrote down about the group worshipping something far underground, like if that is the next enemy? Or is it the dissolution of the H.A from the webcomic?
Ch. 142: Tatsumaki caring about information about Blast was really sweet to see. But if I didn't read the webcomic I wouldn't understand why he means so much to her. I hope ONE and Murata have her backstory in the manga as well. I literally spoke too soon about this because two chapters later we get that information. :O || Sweet Mask got such a bad injury that it makes me believe that he died. Not sure tbh. Something that happens differently in the webcomic is that it's revealed that he was a mysterious being. Like he has the ability to alter himself. He gets harassed by everyone (mostly the public) because they didn't expect him to be an ugly monster. And this kickstarts the public not rlly trusting heroes. And a lot of other shit happens.
Also about Ch. 142 I wondered why Watchdog man wasn't there. Was his city safe? Also I liked the fact that we actually get dialogue from Pig God.
Ch. 143: I don't like Drive Knight anymore lol. It seems like Genos could've actually died for real this time. And lastly Fubuki is a queen. She's turning out to be a really good character.
Ch. 144: It seems like a death flag sprung up for Tatsumaki. Also I kind of understand her thinking because to tatsumaki, blast was the only one that could/would save her. It's not a curse but more like a deep scar on her heart. ;-;!! I wouldn't trust others if that happened to me either. || When I seen the council of swordmasters I thought that they would betray the heroes, lol. || And finally in my notes, I said that it seems like TTM is down for the count too.
Ch. 145: I went back to re-read it and I just noticed in one panel, Pig God says that in the prophecy he needs to save up is power? Is he OP too?! I guess he'll be the savior maybe, that is if Saitama doesn't show up anytime soon. I'm starting to really like Pig God's character a lot too now.
Ch. 146: Ooh! Looks like the spotlight is on Darkshine now. I hope he continues to be a hero because in the webcomic he completely loses his confidence. It's really nice to see. I had some really bad foreshadowing, all I'm going to say is rip darkshine. He didn't die but oof. I also said that it was nice to see that the S-Class could actually hold their own. It wasn't looking promising there for a while.
Ch. 147: oh saitama is on the cover will he finally show up? He in fact didn't. 😔 also I liked the interaction between Atomic Samurai and Bang, he said that it was his job as the master to right his wrongs. I like that he's no longer looking down on him because of Garou. Like how could you expect someone to just be able to make a decision right away and deal with their own student? Like he obviously was important to Bang. That's such a hard thing to do. || Also about Garou he gets a new form 👀
Ch. 148: before I read the chapter, I wrote down that I had different expectations. Because in the webcomic Saitama comes out and supports Garou, he isn't okay with him being killed. Also around this fight is when Sweet Mask gets "revived" and is in monster form. Saitama is the only one that doesn't have a major issue with him. In the webcomic Saitama wasn't missing from the fight but he also wasn't playing a major part yet. || Anyways so the chapter ends with bang appearing to start the fight.
Ch. 149: I felt really bittersweet reading this chapter because the council was wiped out. It would've been cool to understand why there were so few of them left. The lore about the two swords was really cool though. So many events within the last ten chapters veered off from the original plot in the webcomic. I have no way to know what to expect, but I'm not complaining, I like going into these chapters newly experiencing them.
From here on out this is all new observations. Like today i just re-read 150. I would've had a reaction to 151 but it's not out, in fact I feel like I've been waiting a long time for that to release, the last time I checked was early july...
Ch. 150: Poor Darkshine. Also Metal Bat comes back!! I missed his character :o || Haha King is still being caught up in misunderstandings, i can't wait to laugh my ass off in the next chapter. because I know it'll be funny between sprm and king.
