Who was the guitly person in the Hostel tragedy?

Again, this caught my eye when I saw the fandom blame Heather for the Hostel tragedy. But actually, if you think about it, almost all important characters in the Eli Jang arc are guilty. I'll explain it.

 Eli

Eli was narrow-minded, discriminatory and judgmental. He hates to see somebody from prosperous families. Even Eli discriminated Olly and judged him by calling him ungrateful because Olly came from a wealthy family. Then, he did a double standards. Eli welcomes heather in a special place because Eli fell in love with her. Even though Olly and Heather have the same background.

And yes... in the end, Eli regrets it all. 

Sally

Sally just became an orphan. Instantly he met Eli and fell in love with him. But Eli don’t like her. He likes Heather. They even had sex at Sally's house lol. But that's not the problem. The problem is Sally get upset that Hostel was raided by the police because Heather's mother who is a prosecutor is looking for Heather.

Her love for her best friend (Heather) turned into hatred. In Sally’s mind, Heather plays in the Hostel without the permission of her parents. Of course it’s made her mother angry and called the police to raid the Hostel.

In fact, Heather ran away from home because she had abusive parents in her home. Heather seeks the freedom by playing in Hostel. But Sally didn't want to listen to Heather's explanation because she was very angry. Sally blames Heather for the incident.

In the end, Sally didn't forgive herself after Heather's death.

 Heather.

Heather came from a prosperous family, but with authoritarian parents. Her mom really wanted her daughter to become a prosecutor like her. But Heather has big interest in hairstyling.

Heather is quite lustful. I assume, she grew up in strict parental upbringing. So Heather became curious about the forbidden things (sex). And yes, when she is dating with Eli, Heather took the opportunity to take the initiative to have sex with Eli.

Heather got pregnant. But Eli stays away from her because of Heather's mother's orders him. But Heather thinks Eli is just like any other bad boy who left her after makes the girl got pregnant. Heather got shunned by her best friend Sally because of a misunderstanding. And Olly doesn't like Heather cause she’s influencing Eli. Heather also had a cruel mom. She really had no one to support her whereas she was in a very pitiful condition.

In the end, she gave birth and met her death alone. She gave birth at young age which is the probability of death is high.

Her life ended without anyone being good to her. All peoples hate her. She never knew that it was just a misunderstanding..

..until death.

 Olly

Just like Heather. Olly is in a wealthy family but with authoritarian parents. This causes Olly and Heather to yearn for freedom. That's why they were obsessed with Eli.

If Heather likes Eli with love interest, Olly likes Eli as the role model.

If Heather crave the freedom in the love, kindness and constructive way, Olly crave the freedom in destructive way.  He love to see how Eli survives on the streets in criminal ways. It’s really fun for him cause there no demands to obey the rules.

Olly and Heather's principles are contradictory. Eli has favoritism to Heather makes Olly hate Heather. Heather is a parasite who destroys the image of Eli, the criminal. So he (indirectly) kills Heather.

In the end, Olly regretted it and committed suicide.

 Heather's mother

The authoritarian mom. She is the mother who is obsessed with passing her prosecutor career down to her daughter. She also created the misunderstanding. She orders Eli to stay away from Heather when Heather was pregnant. 

If only she wasn't authoritarian, there would be no destruction of the Hostel. Even Heather can get permission if she wants to go to the Hostel to play without fear.

In the end, when her daughter died, her mother didn't cry over her death. She cries over the loss of her obsession with passing the prosecutor's career on to her daughter.

 Warren

I was confused of this character. He looks like Sally's sidekick for me. But in one day, my friend who a fan of Warren says that Warren is also wrong in the incident. But it’s not as fatal as the others.

Warren gave no support when Eli was mourned. Eli was shocked to hear the truth that his girlfriend was pregnant and instantly lost his girlfriend forever. And at that time, Eli was kicked out by Warren from Hostel. Warren was very angry because he thought Eli forced Heather to abort. Of course it because of misunderstanding.

This situation kinda similar to the Sally x Heather conflict. Sally doesn't want to listen to Heather's explanation because of misunderstanding.

In the end, Warren regretted to know that the perpetrator behind the case was Olly.

 Gun

Of course, Gun the racketeer. The Big 4 Crew concept is actually a exploitation. Gun wants to exploit Hostel by instead looking for Gun's successor with a lot of money.

Thanks to Heather and Olly for saving the original Hostel from Gun tampering. Heather influences Eli not to be a candidate of Gun’s successor. Olly made a will to Gun not to exploit the Hostel. We know that Gun only fulfills the wishes of the dead people.

 The only blameless ones seem to be Two uncles and Ryan the cat. The Hostel tragedy actually caused by internal factors.

PTJ is really great. He able to relate some problems to be the tragedy and it’s makes sense! I really miss the quality. The recent episodes of Lookism seems like too obsessed with the character’s power.

I'd say the entire Big Deal Backstory Arc is my fav..cuz I just love the parallels drawn between Sinu and Jake and Samuel. Like its shown beautifully how Jake and Samuel are the opposite sides of the same coin, and I hope Jake gets Samuel back to Big Deal as well 🥺

2nd Fav is Runaway Fam + Hostel Arc in terms of story..its tragic and broke everyone (especially Wang Ochun) but its beautiful..

He decides to text you asking to come to the hostel building taking advantage of the fact that he was the only one there. Which crew has the best logo?

Workers logo is my personal favourite. I like the chinese characters there and it fits well with their concept of Money. 2nd is Hostel. It has a pretty deep meaning and only the original members can get this one as tattoo. Big Deal's one is good but too simple. God Dog logo is a bit stupid even though it was a way for Johan to overcome his trauma.

The Disenchanted Story of Olly Wang

In the Manhwa Lookism by Park Taejoon, the character Olly Wang (Wang Ochun) died at the end of the Hostel arc. He committed suicide after discovering the differences between the intense emotions he felt during the tragic events of his life. He most likely had several mental illnesses as he frequently severely overdosed and obsessed over Eli Jang (Jang Hyun) to the point where he lived just to find him again. Despite being so mentally and physically numb from his mental and physical illnesses, he still paid quota to Jong Gun every month to protect Hostel B from the 4 Major Crews. He lived a life of despair, and despite all of his bad choices, most things that he did were for selfless reasons.

You could say that his life was rather Disenchanted.

“Disenchanted” is also the name of a song from the early 2000s rock band My Chemical Romance. They always made sensational music and “Disenchanted” has got to be one of my favorite songs. One thing that makes me love it so much is that some of the lyrics remind me so much of Olly and everything that he went through in his life. So I’m gonna do a little analysis/ramble about the song and how some of the lyrics remind me so much of one of my favorite characters in Lookism, who is most definitely the most underrated one!!

So this is the first verse of the song and there are a few lyrics here that stand out to me a lot. ((btw i’m gonna put all the lyrics in italics so they stand out from the rest of the text))

“Well, I was there on the day

They sold the cause for the queen

And when the lights all went out

We watched our lives on the screen

I hate the ending myself

But it started with an alright scene”

So the first thing that really stood out to me was when it said “We watched our lives on the screen.” Guys. Remember that movie that Olly was watching about family, the one he got from Sally? The one he watched on the screen on the roof of his building and on his phone while he was with Gun? The film probably brought back a lot of memories of the past with Hostel B, as if he was watching his life.

Another few lines that reminded me of Olly were, “I hate the ending myself / But it started with an alright scene.” At the end of Olly’s story, he ended his own life by jumping from the roof of the building the old Hostel resided in. His life started out okay, when he was friends with Heather and when he first met Eli, but things went very downhill from there and he was never really happy for the rest of his life.

“It was the roar of the crowd

That gave me heartache to sing

It was a lie when they smiled

And said, ‘You won’t feel a thing.’

And as we ran from the cops

We laughed so hard it would sting”

So in these lines, the first one that stuck out to me was “It was a lie when they smiled / And said, ‘You won’t feel a thing.’” I’m sure you guys can figure out why. With Olly’s illness, he was told that he would never feel pain. However, despite severely overdosing on pills that were prescribed for this illness, the pain he ended up feeling in the end was emotional rather than physical. He was so numb physically that he became emotionally numb, and he never felt fear before because he didn’t fear getting hurt. When Eli was beating him after the incident with Heather, Olly swore he was fleeing fear for the first time in his life. However, he realized in the end that the emotion he felt was guilt over something that wasn’t even entirely his fault. And he searched for years to find Eli so he could feel something again, feel the things that he thought was fear. However, it was guilt all along. Despite having an illness that made it impossible for him to feel physical pain, the agonizing sensation of guilt was what killed him in the end.

The other group of lines that reminded me of Olly was when it said: “And as we ran from the cops / We laughed so hard it would sting.” This isn’t as deep as the other one, but since Hostel is a crime organization and Olly used to commit crimes alongside Eli in the past, it reminded me of him because he seemed happy when he was doing those kinds of things.

“If I’m so wrong

How can you listen all night long?

Now will it matter after I’m gone

Because you never learned a goddamn thing”

In the pre-chorus, the lines that remind me of Olly is when it said, “Now will it matter after I’m gone / Becuase you never learned a goddamn thing.” I thought this was really powerful because Olly spent almost three years of his life paying Gun a $100,000 dollar quota every month just so Sally (Serim) and Warren (i don’t know what his korean name is i’m sorry) wouldn’t get dragged into the 4 Major Crews and wouldn’t get hurt. Despite the fact that they mistreated him so much, he still did this for them, which was basically saving their lives. And even after he died, they still had no idea about what he had done for them; they never learned.

“You’re just a sad song with nothing to say

About a lifelong wait for a hospital stay

And if you think that I’m wrong

This never meant nothing to you”

The chorus doesn’t relate much to Olly, but the line “This never meant nothing to you” is similar to what I said about the pre-chorus. Sally and Warren knew nothing about what Olly did to protect them despite the fact that they mistreated him so much in the past.

Since the second verse doesn’t remind me much of him and the pre-chorus and chorus are the same, I’m gonna skip to the post-chorus, which is the last verse I’ll talk about.

“So go, go away

Just go, run away

But where did you run to?

And where did you hide?

Go find another way, price you pay”

I think this whole verse reminds me of him so much. Eli ran away with his baby after the incident with Heather’s death. He asked his family, “How about we play hide and seek?” and disappeared for years. Olly was searching for Eli for years, wondering where he went to hide, while Eli was finding another path for himself, trying to escape the crews and abandoning his family. He did it so he wouldn’t hurt them anymore, but they were left by themselves without someone that they loved. And the price paid when he returned was the loss of Olly’s precious life.

olly wang, the night we met

when you have it all, demanding for more just seems so fucking wrong. for olly wang, it was a nice home and parents who wanted him to be best he can be, teaching that the little sacrifices would one day be worth it.

the first time heather told olly wang about sally park, it was the first time he tried to smile. "I... Am... Happy for you!" to be locked in a similar prison, olly wang knows how heather longs to have a girl her age to connect to. olly is smart! but he didn't know shit like periods or how to turn it off or if you could turn it off and how to style hair or some shit. there is no warmth in his chest but his brain says that he needs to do something to make heather feel better.

repeat again: his brain says.

a family is the smallest unit in the society. why is it the one heather is in is too big, big enough that there could have been gaps for him to fill? there was a dad and there was a mom and there was an uncle and a cat and... there was none of him.

but there was olly beside a crying heather when she failed mathematics for going out with eli jang too much for her comfort, telling her that she could take his paper instead, they could just stain the name part, just make sure that she gets better scores the next time. but there was olly in cram school, asking heather if this is how smiles look like or a crying face looked like while she would tear up laughing, forgetting the teacher running late. but there was olly walking her home when she is scared to face her mom because she has been ten minutes behind schedule.

repeat again: but there was olly.

but there was no heather when he started spiraling down the rabbit hole. but there was no heather to share anymore a meal in their one hour meal break so olly could talk about mr. wang's new scars that he created in his thighs, similar to the ones at the back of heather's hand that's from her mom. but there was no heather when the prison bars grew higher and higher again.

repeat again: but there was no heather.

heather was in no way responsible for olly wang, one might say. however, sometimes one could think that olly wang was in no way responsible for patronizing heather in those days she needed a friend. maybe olly wang could have left his prison by himself or maybe olly wang was the only one he could have ever hurt. maybe his parents were right and people were cruel but you never know if they are or they could be. olly wang have repeatedly tormented himself but the realization that he was far more kinder to himself than hostel will ever be.

repeat again: people were cruel.

maybe olly wang's heart was shrunk down because of emotions that had to be watered down. so it was never meant to feel grief, extreme joy or wrath or anything overwhelming. his brain was never a mute. his brain wonders the absence of heather's since she was a part of hostel. his brain questioned the empty seat across the cafeteria. his brain didn't like walking home alone. his brain pulled the strains he had in his heart the hardest that movie night in the hostel. to bring you back to the beginning, let me repeat again: when you have it all, demanding for more just seems so fucking wrong.

he was grateful that he wasn't sent home. he was grateful for their presence. he was grateful that he isn't that much alone. if only his brain would stop talking about things that could hurt them. if only he knew how not to listen.

that's the problem with olly wang, he was alone, and what happens when you are? your brain is the loudest, and it has never been so quiet when heather wasn't around anymore.
