Reluctant Reader Wednesday: Medusa by Jessie Burton, illustrated by Olivia Lomenech Gill
Medusa doesn’t have anyone to talk to anymore, except for her sisters who live on the island with her, and the snakes who live on her head. Until the day that a beautiful boy named Perseus came to her island, Medusa never dared to think about the future, and towards any possibility of happiness there. She knows that she must hide so that Perseus can’t see her, but listening to the sound of his voice and sharing her own story with him shouldn’t be dangerous … or is it?
This strange and powerful retelling of the Medusa myth is deepened with Olivia Lomenech Gill’s ethereal illustrations throughout the story. Give this book to teens and adults who are ready for an old story in an amazing new skin.

Still I refuse to look up. It's the only dominion I can claim. Some might say it's a mistake, but I don't care. Just because a god tells you to look at them, doesn't mean you have to.

Medusa
Tumblr media
by Jessie Burton & Olivia Lomenech Gill
I have been obsessed with mythology (especially Greek) since I was a child. Jessie Burton did not disappoint with this poetic feminist retelling of Medusa. Medusa's story has always been hard-hitting as it makes a monster out of the victim, so to hear this version, I was awestruck and couldn't put it down. I just purchased a hard copy for myself plus, I work with residential youth so, I have bought a few copies for each house as I know the girls will love this. The writing style is mesmerising and tragically empowering. To hear the victims story instead of one of the monstrous gorgons was amazing and it captivates you from the beginning. The illustrations were beautiful and fit the story perfectly! There are so many quotes you could zone in on! I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who adores Greek Mythology. I would like to thank Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Jessie Burton & Olivia Lomenech Gill for my copy of the ARC via Netgalley. Due to this kind gesture, I have decided to leave an honest review.

Who else is super stoked for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald?!
On November 15th, Special Collections will be hosting a pop-up exhibit that will give visitors the opportunity to explore some of the most magical books from our stacks. While searching for books for the exhibit, we came across this newly illustrated copy of Newt Scamander’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. From charcoal sketches to watercolors, J.K. Rowling’s creations come to life with stunning illustrations by artist Olivia Lomenech Gill. Seriously, I wish every Harry Potter fan could have this book on their shelf!

UNIVERSOS PARALELOS

Got this beauty for Christmas and some cool wand makeup brushes. It's a 5/5 book, the illustrations are beautiful and the descriptions are interesting and witty. The only thing I was disappointed by was that the scribbles and notes written by Harry, Ron and Hermione on the original comic relief version were not included in this one!

Third Annual TBR Challenge, February 2022
Title: Medusa: the girl behind the myth
Author/s: Jessie Burton, illustrated by Olivia Lomenech Gill
Page count: 211
Trigger warnings: Misogyny, sexism, rape, body horror, death, body shaming, gaslighting, grief
Rep: None that I could recall
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 out of 5 stars)
Read below the cut for my slightly spoiler-ish thoughts.
Thoughts in brief:
Medusa: the girl behind the myth is a retelling of an ancient myth - with a difference.
For starters, it is Medusa herself telling us the tale. In this narrative choice, Burton has given this woman back her agency and - dare I say it - humanity. She is helped immeasurably in this by Lomenech Gill's beautiful illustrations.
After being cursed by Athena, her hair transformed into a mass of writhing snakes, Medusa, along with her sisters and her dog, Argentus, retreat to a remote island away from prying eyes.
Four years later, despite the company of her sisters and dog, Medusa yearns for a friend. And then, one day, a young man called Perseus arrives on her shores, and he seems to bring everything Medusa has wished for. But is it all too good to be true?
Medusa may be ancient in its origins, but some of the ideas Burton explores are all too relevant - the objectification of women, the abuse of power, consent (or lack of it), and having the courage to be who you are.
On a slightly more whimsical note, I loved how Burton gave personality to the snakes (some of them even had names!) and how their behaviour shifted with Medusa's changing moods.
The novel isn't perfect - it started off slow, some of the phrasings verged on flowery, and there were more modern words and turns of phrase used that did not fit within the ancient setting - but it made me feel, and it made me care.
Isn't that what all good art should do?

The Death of Jane Lawrence England kurz nach dem Krieg.
