Two questions about Lincoln.
1. I heard he used to lift half tons over his shoulder when he worked as rail splitter but I'm not sure if that's real or not. Do you know if it is real?
2. I heard that Lincoln was visiting a fort that had an attack while he was visiting but I can't recall where nor when it happened can you help with that please?
Love your blog been following for years
First of all, thanks for following and I appreciate the message! 1. In his early years, Lincoln definitely performed quite a bit of physical labor that required heavy-lifting, but a half ton is 1,000 pounds. Even though he was, by nearly all accounts, incredibly strong and, at 6'4" tall he was powerfully built (remarkably so for that time period), that's still a ridiculous amount of weight for any human to lift. The story of Lincoln lifting that much weight actually came from Lincoln's friend and law partner, William Herndon, who is a major source of information about Lincoln's life before the Presidency and in Springfield. Herndon wrote that he had personally witnessed the feat of strength (in fact, Herndon puts the weight at between 1,000 and 1,300 pounds). I just don't see how it was possible. I looked up the record for the deadlift and it was set at a little over 1,100 pounds at one of those World Strongest Man competitions. Lincoln undoubtedly had impressive physical strength and probably had that "country strength" that is hard to measure, but I feel like Herndon had to have been exaggerating about that particular feat, even if it wasn't completely apocryphal.
2. The story about the fort is from Lincoln's visit to Fort Stevens, on the outskirts of Washington, D.C., where the President actually witnessed a battle on July 12, 1864. The story told over the years is that as Lincoln was watching the battle from the heights of a parapet in the fort, Confederate snipers took some shots at him. It's been said that Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., a young officer in the Union Army who would later become one of the longest-serving Supreme Court Justices in history (1902-1932), yelled, "Get down, you damn fool!" to the President. While Lincoln did witness the battle and was urged to get out of the dangerous firing range of the Confederate troops, it almost certainly wasn't Holmes who yelled at the President.

Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr:
Such hearts—ah me, how many!—were stilled twenty years ago; and to us who remain behind is left this day of memories. Every year—in the full tide of spring—at the height of the symphony of flowers and love and life—there comes a pause, and through the silence we hear the lonely pipe of death.Year after year lovers wandering under the apple boughs and through the clover and deep grass are surprised with sudden tears as they see black veiled figures stealing through the morning to a soldier’s grave. Year after year the comrades of the dead follow with public honor, procession and commemorative flags and funeral march—honor and grief from us who stand almost alone, and have seen the best and noblest of our generation pass away. But grief is not the end of all. I seem to hear the funeral march become a paean. I see beyond the forest the moving banners of a hidden column. Our dead brothers still live for us, and bid us think of life, not death—of life to which in their youth they lent the passion and glory of the spring. As I listen, the great chorus of life and joy begins again, and amid the awful orchestra of seen and unseen powers and destinies of good and evil our trumpets sound once more a note of daring, hope, and will.

The Right Thing To Do
When I woke up yesterday morning and the first thing in my newsfeed was that President Biden was, at that very moment, in Ukraine, I was surprised, to say the least.  I knew he had hoped to visit, but last I heard, the trip was unlikely to take place due to security concerns.  The news of his time spent with President Zelenskyy reinforced my views that President Biden is a good and decent man. …

"Life is painting a picture, not doing a sum." Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
Tumblr media
Life's but a canvass / Our thoughts and dreams are the paint: / pigment of our souls.
So much of life is a matter of keeping score. Scoring is fine for sports, and certainly we want to know how we're doing day by day or week by week. Are we doing what we need to to survive and, by God's grace, thrive? We need to be less interested in scoring points, though, and focus more on the pleasantries that surround us. The leaves are turning, the days are cooling; it's time to slow down and embrace the world around us. May as well give ourselves a big hug, too. That's put blush back into one's cheeks. © keefderpoet, 2023

one thing i’ve always thought about since the beginning of the dark academia community is how i interpreted it more as a philosophy, as opposed to a lifestyle. of course i love oxfords, turtlenecks and reading russian classics, but these things have faded in and out of my personal image for years. the one thing that has stayed is the dark academic philosophy:
thirsting for knowledge and education, whether that be studying at university, taking online master class courses or even just self-conducted research;
“the mind, stretched by new ideas, may never return to its original dimensions.” - Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.
literally just feed your curiosity like a mythical beast
also feed your creativity, it’s a part of the human experience to make and inhale art. do not feel pressured to try to document it and force it into a neat little instagram account. make it for the sake of making it. if you are a poet/writer, never quiet your velvet tongue. write about anything—everything! i have a journal where i document my silly little life and it makes me feel like i’ll be the next Kafka; i don’t write every day but i love reading back at my older entries. currently on my fourth journal and it’s so satisfying to look at the other three completed ones in my book shelf.
being a dark academic doesn’t mean you have to dress in white collared shirts and plaid pants all the time, but i definitely think it a d.a. thing to be completely intentional with your wardrobe. not necessarily minimalist (or maximalist for that matter), but you love every single item of clothing you own. that blazer you thrifted is never shrugged off your shoulders; you splurged on a pair of proper oxfords five years ago and they’re still your go-to option. choosing quality over quantity just makes sense.
this is definitely not my usual style of posting, and i’m well aware some of these notions aren’t my own, but regardless i believe they encompass what i’ve interpreted as the dark academia philosophy, as opposed to the dark academia aesthetic
please add on anything else y’all think fits under this!
