Creeper Album Review: Sex, Death & The Infinite Void

As if it were even possible, UK “horror punk” band Creeper went even more theatrical on their second full-length Sex, Death & The Infinite Void. Like its predecessor Eternity, in Your Arms, it’s a concept album, following the story of two lovelorn characters and a villain trying to stop them from running away together, set in fictional towns inspired by real ones the band experienced when touring the U.S. Unlike Eternity, though, the band’s follow-up is halfway grounded in some real struggles they faced. When lead singer Will Gould announced at a London show in late 2018 that it would be “the last show we’ll ever do,” a la David Bowie killing Ziggy Stardust, it wasn’t just a foreshadowing of the Thin White Duke-esque glam rock they’d adopt on Sex, Death & The Infinite Void--it almost came true. Guitarist and co-writer Ian Miles was hospitalized due to mental health struggles, and Gould and Miles had to write songs over FaceTime instead of in LA with producer Xandy Barry, the way they were supposed to. In the mean time, Gould and his fiancee broke up, his mother’s partner died, and he became lonely, spending his studio time in L.A. alone and drinking. That Sex, Death & The Infinite Void was released, let alone a stylistic rebirth for Creeper, is an unlikely triumph.

With Sex, Death & The Infinite Void, you get the usual Creeper drama, this time in the form of Haunted Mansion-inspired narration from Patricia Morrison (The Sisters of Mercy, The Damned, The Gun Club), Marilyn Manson-tinged power pop, and generally huge choruses. Where they uniquely succeed is in the blurred lines between fictional and real romanticism. The tale behind highlight “Cyanide” could be lifted from a movie or at least an idyllic recollection of the 70′s, as Gould was eating breakfast at a diner in L.A. when he heard a T. Rex song and--voila!--realized Creeper needed to be a glam rock band, rushed back to the studio, and wrote the song in 30 minutes. There’s a twang to the instrumentation as his voice trembles like Station to Station-era Bowie. Their embrace of American music continues on “Paradise”, a spooky surf rock tune that clearly recalls Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley, and especially “Poisoned Heart”, which sprinkles baritone country verses over its otherwise generic hooky choruses. Doo-wop “Thorns of Love” is based on a musical Gould was writing, and you can imagine an eager actor over-delivering lines like, “Lennon was shot in December time / Curtis was hung by washing line / 1980′s lovers died in twos / So kiss me in the ash and dirt / I only love you when it hurts.” Whereas they previously used camp to its excess, here, they use it to their success.

Closer “All My Friends” is the outlier, and a necessary one. A piano ballad that Gould played spontaneously, it contains what I imagine are real-time references to Miles’ hospitalization; you can hear the lack of certainty in Gould’s voice. “Sex, death and the infinite void / The very thoughts we’re taught to avoid,” he sings, laying bare what the band is now facing. It’s clear at the time that he’s unsure whether the band will survive as he sings, “Now you drift in this reality / You lost your way, somewhere with me.” Ultimately, the line that gives the song its title, “All my friends hurt,” is a normalization of the struggle of life, one that reminds the listener, importantly, how the album and band came to arrive at the place they are now.
