Katniss watches closely their firstborn, her cardbon copy with blue eyes, grow into an older sister like she used to be.

Their little girl is constantly generous with her patience, generous with her love, never letting go of her brother's hand first. Katniss can't blame their son for being so drawn to his sister, always following her around, in close resemblance of a tiny baby chick.

She's the one who can put her brother quickly at ease when Katniss is tending to his scraped knees or shooing a insistent flu away. There's no fuss in the simple task of trimming their baby boy's nails and hair when the little one uses her words. Always so talkative and eager to share her imagination, branching up stories from the songs their mother sings for them only.

Sometimes Katniss gets lost in her thoughts when looking at their children, brought to reality when Peeta reaches for her. But she has caught him staring too.

"She looks so much like you." she comments one day as they watch their children play with some of their father's paint.

"She looks a lot like us, both of them do." Peeta answers as he, with all the time in the world, pulls her close and places a tenderly kiss on her temple. Affection her body was already instinctively expecting to receive.

Katniss knows deep inside they did something right, that everything is alright when their daughter can offer and give so much without missing or lacking anything in return.

I've been wondering why Cinna doesn't show up in more THG fics... obviously not fics that take place in Panem when it wouldn’t make sense for him to be there, but he's absent from a lot of AUs and while Finnick gets a lot of "he's alive :)" in fics, Cinna doesn't. But I think along with Peeta, Gale, Finnick, and Madge, Cinna is among the closest friends Katniss has. And canonically in the book, he's around the same age as Finnick yet he's not hanging around in college AUs or anything.

I miss him, tbh. I want to read more fics with him in it, because he meant so much to Katniss.

girl i think it's hilarious how we're having mirror experiences with mine with Peeta's character, and yours with Gale 😂 how the turntables !

when i was much younger i preferred Gale simply because I felt he was far more capable of being a protector (in the very practical and physical sense); & his childhood bond with the protagonist--there was already friendship and trust between the characters. and I knew he understood what being an eldest sibling was like, the responsibility and the burdens.

i could not understand Peeta for a very long time even when i accepted of course he was the right person to be with Katniss through and at the end of it all. but now i see parts of myself in Peeta (both in my own nature and through my own life experiences/active choices I make now) and isn't this both a very bizarre yet magical thing about growing up and revisiting stories

love that development for us! it's all a about the growth. it truly is hilarious how closely our arcs mirror each other.

ngl while i am thee friends-to-lovers girlie gale did so not catch my interest when i was younger. there was just something about him that didn’t click for me, whereas peeta made so much sense to me. i do have a soft spot for characters like him—a little bit gentle, a little bit idealistic. and gale, in comparison, was so much more intense in his views and little baby tween did not know what to do with that. BUT NOW. oh let me tell you, i do see more than hints of myself in him. the sense of loyalty not just to individual people but humanity as a whole. the sometimes stoic but practical nature. the at times scorching and radical anger…. i don’t think i really understood him and refused to see his trauma in a broader context. he is a teenage boy fighting in a war against a system that reminded him daily that it wants him and his loved ones dead. like. you cannot walk away from that without a splinter lodge somewhere deep inside of you.

and while i still don’t see katniss and gale as a romantic couple, their friendship has become so precious to me. and the way they drift and grow apart over the course of the trilogy is probably one of the lost painful things to witness. because you (as the reader) know it’s happening and katniss and gale know it’s happening but they both hope that they can work through it, that they can hold onto each other and be okay again. but it happens slowly and the all at once. they fall apart and with that the last part of their old selves and their old lives slipping through their fingers. they look into the eyes of their best friend, the person they have loved and trusted and relied on for years, and they do not recognise each other anymore. and it’s the most sobering realisation that they cannot salvage their relationship. that somewhere along the way they have lost each other completely. and when they part that final time they almost part as strangers and it’s so devastating it has me on my knees 🧎‍♀️ in the end their friendship is just another thing the war cost them. another price they paid for the sake of the greater good.

(Answering this fashionably late bc I'm a terrible person) Hey anon!

First up, how does everyone know her birthday? Was it in the books and I just completely blanked it? It's cute that it's in spring, since that's also when she goes through her 'rebirth' from a scared starving child to Katniss Everdeen, District Hunter.

She's an extremely well written character. The way her grief and the following trauma impacts her and haunts her throughout the series is horribly accurate. It was almost too much when I first read it (self reflection is rarely pleasant) but what makes her so inspiring is how even at her worst she still finds ways to keep going.

For all she's described as the Girl on Fire, to me she seems more like the embodiment of nature. Forests can be burned, rivers can be dammed, and the meadows paved over. But new shoots grow from soil enriched by ashes. The rivers burst their banks in the spring melts and carve new paths in the stone. Roots break the pavement and grass reclaims the earth. It's only a matter of time.

People's strengths and weaknesses aren't really something you can separate; eg. she's very impulsive and tends to leap without looking, which makes for an excellent protagonist and both kickstarts a revolution and puts her and everyone she loves in danger. She's also extremely stubborn - this lends itself to her persistence and refusal to give in, but also prevents her asking for help when she needs it.

Re: casting, the neat thing about her is that she's written to be purposefully racially ambiguous beyond 'mixed race' due to how far ahead in the future Panem is and everyone kinda blending together (as a halfsies, I'm a big fan of it). That said there's a lot that points to her being Native American and that's how I choose to draw her, so someone in line with that would be awesome.
