Great reunion last Sunday when my old Carleton University buddy and housemate, punk photographer and promoter Shawn Scallen was passing through London. He took this shot of me in Haggerston (we were en route to The Glory – which was shut, even though Google insisted it was open. Groan!). I rarely get my photo taken anymore, but it’s flattering to think Shawn has also photographed the likes of Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins and The Cramps!
Age is no better, hardly so well, qualified for an instructor as youth, for it has not profited so much as lost. One may doubt if the wisest person person has learned anything of absolute value by living. Practically, the old have no very important advice to give the young, their own experience has been so partial and their lives have been such miserable failures for private reasons, as they must believe; and it may be that they have some faith left which believes that they experience, and they are only less young than they were. I have lived some 30 years on this planet, and I have yet to hear the first symbol of value or even earnest advice from my seniors. They have told me nothing, and probably can't tell me anything to the purpose. Here is life, and experiment to the great extent untried by many; but it does not avail that they have tried it. If I have any experience which I think valuable, I am sure to reflect this my mentors said nothing about. - HDT
