kind of a tragedy that ao3 didn't exist in the 70s and 80s. i know people say it would be a horror story to find your parent's ao3 but honestly as long as you avoid anything E-rated until you're like the same age they were when they wrote it you'd be fine. my mom has an old yellowed manuscript of the extremely generic high fantasy novel she painstakingly wrote on a typewriter at age 15 and i've read it twice. her self insert was a side character tough warrior catgirl named "catchild" who had a sword and always rode on horseback and could talk to feral cats in the main character's village. are you telling me you guys would find ABSOLUTELY NO DELIGHTS in the OP deviantart OCs that your disco 'rents came up with.......

#so my brother found a box full of documents #from when some semi-distant relative was researching family geneaology #and all my time reading old letters on the loc website came in handy #because it meant i could decipher the handwritten document #of my great-great-grandfather's life story #and read it for everyone as we hung out before family sunday dinner #and the pressure is now on for all the unmarried family members #we've got a legacy to live up to with courtship stories #it seems my great-great-grandfather came to america after a failed engagement #a few years later he met a girl and her parents outside of church #the father hired him to work on his farm #three days later the girl rode with him in a wagon somewhere on some farm business #and she was like 'i've been thinking about you day and night since i first saw you and this is our first chance to speak alone' #and she was like 'we should get married' and he agreed and they shook hands #though they did wait until the next sunday to formalize the engagement #they waited three months to ask for her father's blessing #which they got #they got married two months later #and were married for 35 years #until the morning of the day they were scheduled to take their first out-of-state trip #(he was excited to give her a chance to travel after a life of knowing only home and work) #and he woke up to find her dead beside him #he was writing this not long after and you can tell he was heartbroken #so the marriage was clearly successful #so anyway my one brother was like 'now i feel unsuccessful. i've never found a woman who wanted to marry me after three days' #and my married brother told all us unmarried ones that he expects us to be engaged by next week #clearly it can be done #and anyway it's so interesting to know the details #after only vaguely knowing this guy's name

holly black for real writes books like they’re mid movies from 2008 and it is sincerely one of the most beautiful and real things ever. the cruel prince trilogy excluded from this sentiment because i haven’t read and wouldn’t know if that’s its vibe. well that’s not true i read the cruel prince but NOT in the booktok way i read the first book when it came out when i was in high school and then i entered my illiteracy era and never read the next two. i have them, one’s even a signed copy i just haven’t had the time to get around to them and also i’m lowkey prejudiced against them because of their booktok popularity. those annoying ass people don’t even know my friends hazel and ben evans. who btw would have slayed in a low budget fantasy action comedy rated pg made in 2006 released direct to dvd with the ugliest and most captivating cgi you’ve ever seen in your life. starring some dude who was not famous at the time but became so in 2011 as the faerie prince. god i can see it now. actually to be fair this could never have been a film in 2006 because there’s gay people. if it was about two sisters tho instead of a sister and brother it would have. and nothing else about it would change and i would have watched it so many times i scratched the dvd. but well that is not the world we live in we live in the world where it’s just a book nobody has read but me by an author who’s popular for other stuff. and you know the worst part about the cruel prince getting booktok-ified? ben is literally in that book and i know none of those bitches even knew or cared. holly sets all her faerie stuff in the same universe (which is ambiguously also the same universe cassandra clare writes in. hard to explain the nuances to a fuckin newbie you had to be there) anyway. i was a holly black girl before it was cool. i was literally made fun of for reading her books and then suddenly in like 2020 faerie romance became “in” and frankly i’ve never felt more betrayed by the trend cycle as i was then. ok i was there in 2017 getting bullied by my older cousin for reading about gay faeries (lady midnight) when i was 15 and now adult women are allowed to log on to tiktok and talk about their literal fantasy porn series every day. is anything fair holy shit…

Wanted: fiction podcast recommendations to replicate algae to!

Once a month I have to spend 2 days replicating algae plates and I always use that time to marathon a podcast or two. Just on day 1 of this month’s replication, I caught up on… all the shows I currently listen to. So I need to build a list back up!

Only catch is, they need to be good Lab Work podcasts, so minimal audio jump scares (specifically sudden high pitched noises), and ideally nothing with a lot of audio gore either (silt verses and malevolent are my upper limits on that front so anything with more audio gore than those, I have to sit out)

Did you know that Hawkins has its very own urban legend?

If you are a Bad Man, the locals might tell you, the kind of Bad Man who thinks nothing of raising his hand at his wife or his children, you should stay away from the woods at night. There is something out there, they whisper. Something that really doesn't like Bad Men. Something that makes them disappear forever.

They might tell you that it's been happening since the 90s. Even if you don't believe in urban legends, it's hard to deny that it was a difficult time for Hawkins; in '89 a young man was beaten to death by his own father - the first murder Hawkins had seen since the Creel family tragedy some thirty years earlier. The Bad Man who killed his son disappeared without a trace only days later. And after that, other Bad Men started disappearing as well.

It's just a silly old story, of course. Something for the local Boomers to reminisce about. But then a man goes missing. He's a good man. Works in landscaping. His son is on the high school basketball team. There's never been any problems.

Officer Steve Harrington has no interest in local urban legends - all he wants to do is solve the case, but first he needs to figure out what's the connection between the missing man, an old Camaro rusting in the junkyard, and a murder case from over thirty years ago.

What do you think the fandom for your character would be like? Are they a fan favorite, a love to hate villain, derided for whatever reason, or something else? This is tough; I don't really know how other people see him ! But to me . . . I know that I do not see Tai as being the 'main character' or fan fave in a potential narrative. I know if I were ever going to pitch a show using my OC's, he wouldn't be the main character: not in a bad way, like it's not that I don't think he can carry that role!! It's just that I think his best and most natural position is ... as part of a duo. Or part of a group. I think he's the type of character who may not nessecarily be the fan favorite, but if you took him out of the cast . . . the group would suddenly feel very off. The chemistry would be off, and it feels a lot emptier without him. He contributes a lot to the 'heart' of the group -- perhaps more than anyone realizes, until he's not there, and his absense is suddenly felt very strongly. I think he is a glue or essential member that most people like, but only a rare niche part of the fandom LOVES to the point of like, caring enough to write fic about or make fanworks that focus on him, heh. but those niche people who do obsess over him individually are super cool ; ) bahahah By contrast, what would their haters dislike about your character? Unhealthy; problematic, sometimes. I know from feedback I've seen & gotten before that some people understandably don't like that... and that's fine ! His personality is the result of trauma that manifested in a variety of ways: some of it unfolded in a positive way, into healthy coping mechanisms, but a lot of it . . . very much did not. But ... I'm not the kind of writer who cares about giving all my characters positive character devolpment that makes them their 'best', healthiest self. Some people say that's romantasizing or 'normalizing' unhealthy attachments, but, idk ... I think it's a 'to each their own' thing. Because for myself, I prefer seeing characters/relationships I can relate to in media, rather than characters/relationships I aspire to be/have? I hope that makes some sense... But tbh, I really wouldn't care if anyone dislikes him, for any reason— whether it's a valid reason or not. ( Excluding racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. Then ur a lil bitch baby. ) But other than that... not every character is for everyone ???? And I mean that both in the sense that you can't possibly expect everyone to like your characters, but also literally: not every character is written for ME to like. There are characters out there that I LOATHE or feel absolutely nothing for: but they reach their intended audiennce: other people in the fandom will feel represented by that same character, and/or that character brings them great comfort/entertainment... so yeah. I truly do not care when someone hates my characters JASJAJ. It doesn't offend or bother me at all; I will simply tip my hat to them and suggest they seek out other characters who do speak to them!! : D

THERE'S MANY I COULD PICK, but I think I'll say this one 'cause it summarizes/depicts many things about them that I love &lt;3 “I missed that. This. Us, doing what we do best.” Trouble? Violence? She means being side by side, connected, looking after each other - what was taken away from them when they were apart. “I said something earlier. Something that I know hurt you.
