okay so here’s the thing. while i agree that kpop is for people of all ages, i feel like a lot of people miss the accountability part that comes along with it, particularly when it comes to groups with minors in them. there’s nothing wrong with listening to these groups casually. however, if you’re stanning a group with minors and are older than them (especially if you’re more than a couple of years older), it’s important to hold yourself accountable. for example: there’s nothing wrong with someone who’s 30+ listening to a group with minors casually. stanning is slightly different, though - i would say stanning can be okay as long as you’re being an adult about it. like i would genuinely be concerned if i saw someone way too obsessed with collecting albums and photocards for minors that are much, much younger than them. or if a 20+ year old was sexualizing a 14 year old and calling them “hot” and “attractive” - that is a problem. yes, kpop is for all ages, but in an industry that’s unfortunately filled with minors, as an older fan you have the responsibility to not be weird about it. if you can't consume content in a responsible way, then don't stan groups with minors in them. it's as simple as that.

i’m literally against the existence of israel as a state (also the united states but that’s another discussion) and zionists have no place on my blog lol but i lose followers every time i post that antisemitism is deeply affecting the way many people talk about israel which is horrible to me. i grew up in california and most of my friends growing up who were not people of color were jewish, my oldest childhood friend was a jewish girl and is a leftist and has posted about how scary it is seeing people support hamas with their whole chest and generally how much people are letting antisemitism feed into how they talk about israel. jewishness ≠ israel, there are people living in israel resisting apartheid and dodging the draft and facing very real consequences for it, the majority of israelis want netanyahu out of power, and netanyahu literally wants the jewish diaspora to be miserable and fear for their lives and experience antisemitism forever so they’ll move to israel.

I want to get into Zatanna comics but I’m not sure where to start. What series do you recommend?
Hello! Don't worry, I can give you a short starting guide + some recommendations on this post so you can read without having to dive fully into thousands of issues (unless you want a detailed guide of more appearances).
The usual go to for any beginner is Zatanna (2010) by Paul Dini. It's her longest solo comic (16 issues) and it fits as a stand alone.
Tumblr media
If you are interested, I'm currently working in a masterlist reading guide of her appearances. Zatanna is a very old character, so a lot of her appearances are scattered as cameo and team books, so often finding what to read is hard. If you want to get a little further into her character, these options I'm about to mention are good as well. More under the cut because this is a long post.
- Secret Origins (1988) (volume 2) #27
Offers a summary about of Zatanna's origin in the DC universe. A bit old, so the scans can be blurry, but still a nice read.
Tumblr media
- Zatanna Special (1987) by Gerry Conway & Gray Morrow
Zatanna gets contacted by the ghost of her mother Sindella, which leads her to travel to secret city of the Homo Magi with her manager. A lot of details about her background are revealed her, it's one of my favourite comics for her.
Zatanna: Come Together (1993) by Lee Mars & Esteban Maroto
Tumblr media
Four issue mini in which Zatanna tries to get a fresh new start in San Francisco, temporally retiring from her superhero career. Unfortunately, she doesn't expect to find her stay disrupted by a supernatural threat infesting the city. Still one of my favourite comics of her and the art is amazing too. It also explores her background from her mother's side of the family, which is always good and underrated.
Zatanna: Everyday Magic (2003) by Paul Dini & Rick Mays (one shot)
Tumblr media
We see Zatanna in her best moment as a famous stage magician in a long tour. She seems to be doing great, but she still fights to have an ordinary personal life. Things get complicated when her former partner, John Constantine, shows up on her life once again.
This is a fun story! It's Zatanna only Vertigo solo book. There are some poorly aged jokes and the art is not everyone's cup of tea, but it's a fun light hearted read for everyone.
Zatanna: Seven Soldiers (2007) by Grant Morrison & Ryan Sook
Zatanna attends a superhero support group. Her powers are weak and she finds herself in a low spot in her life, but the arrival of a mysterious girl pushes her to go on a tripe to find her father's missing journals.
This mini series is part of a bigger event written by Morrison called Seven Soldiers of Victory, but it can be read as a stand alone. If you want further context, I recommend reading the event, though.
I really like this comic, though. I wish we got to see more of Zatanna's mentorship role.
Tumblr media
Black Canary & Zatanna: Bloodspell (2015) by Paul Dini & Joe Quinones.
A fun team up comic! It's an original graphic novel. I love Zee and Dinah's friendship.
Tumblr media
Wonder Woman: Agent of Peace (2020) #15
A fun team up issue with Diana and Zee spending quality time together.
Tumblr media
Justice League Dark (2011) (New52) & Justice League Dark (2018) (Rebirth)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, to clarify. I don't necessarily recommend the Justice League Dark books, but I'm incluiding them since most of Zee post new 52 appearances are in these two books which are...a mixed bag. Justice League Dark (new 52) wasn't of my liking with the exception of the last third of the whole book (Dematteis did a good job, probably the best out of the three writers heading the book). Earlier writers didn't know how to handle Zatanna, her personality is very watered down just as well as her abilities, and she isn't really given spotlight, leadership and full potential of her abilities until Dematteis takes the pen. I also don't enjoy how off was the characterisation of other characters of the book and the overall writing quality and pace, but that's a story for another post.
Justice League Dark (Rebirth) is a step up in quality from New52, but unfortunately it continues with the weird personality shift in Zatanna's personality and the a lackuster character design. As much as I love Diana, who is part of this team line up, I think Zatanna should have been given the leader role and the spotlight. Out of this book, I sincerely enjoyed Ram V's stage on the later half on this run, who deserved to stay longer on this title.
That said, you can take a look on these titles, but you know, at least you know what to expect.
Bonus: Graphic novels, webtoons and stand alone stories
Tumblr media
DC's new talent showcase (2018)
Truth and Justice (2020) #7 - 9
Zatannna & the Ripper (Available for Free in Webtoon, still ongoing)
Zatannna & House of Secrets (Kids graphic novel)
Batman: Urban Legends (#11-16)
Johnny Constantine & Mystery of the Meanest Teacher (she's a co protagonist here)

Reminder:
If I find out that any of you are proshippers, or "darkfic" supporters, or MAPs, or whatever little cutesy names y'all are calling yourselves now, YOU ARE BEING BLOCKED ON-SIGHT.
I love me some darkfic. That's great. I also love not harassing people over shipping. Cool. But DO NOT ship children with adults. I'm not going to harass you over it; I'm simply going to evict you off my property immediately.
And if you don't know what I'm talking about? Ask me. DM me. I'll tell you. If you haven't heard of darkfic in this context, you're probably fine.
You all know who you are.
This is your final warning. GET OUT.

i’ve talked about how mob movies/the mafia trilogy in general treats women, but i was thinking about it and like. wives and mothers are the most fridged people in the trilogy. like, okay, let’s take a look at some of the mothers, right? and it’s like.
in MDE sarah’s mother is dead, and painted as a villain in sarah’s eyes (we’ll come back to her later). sarah herself, once she marries tommy, eventually loses everything when tommy flips, and has to live the rest of her life under an assumed identity and then without tommy after vito and joe roll up.
in M2, maria scaletta has a deadbeat drunk for a husband, and eventually dies of illness and a broken heart, while vito is in prison.
in M3, there’s sarah burke (danny and nicki’s mother), perla robinson, virginia marcano (giorgi’s mother). all of them, dead of some ‘illness’, most likely, since the only way to shove women aside is to have them die of ‘illness’, whatever the hell that entails.
(and these are just mothers, yk. like. let’s not go into the wives. betty. frank’s wife, serafina. lauretta, who is the only wife alive, and we never see her once. wives consigned to the dossiers, which might as well make them non-existent.)
circling back to sarah’s mother, who is unnamed, and we’re only ever given her initials. right, so sarah tells tommy that her mother was “an ugly, jealous drunk”, and like she’d throw shit at luigi and all that, but honestly like sometimes i wonder if it was just a frustrated woman stuck in a life that didn’t suit her. that she wanted to part in, and couldn’t voice her frustrations out to.
like. cmon. luigi was the most feared hitman in lost heaven, and if he was running with the mob from his youth, he would’ve been with peppone first, then salieri. and then he gets married, to this woman who probably doesn’t even have the first clue to what he does--- until she finds out.
what do you do when someone you love is a killer and a criminal and has enough blood on his hands to paint the walls of your house red? pair that up with running a household, trying to take care of a young, impressionable daughter, a daughter who takes after her father so fiercely that there’s nothing you can do but sit back and watch?
like. we’ve all seen the letter in the prison. mrs marino asking for luigi to give up gunning people down, give up his supposed affairs, and all that mob-life stuff. like... i don’t know. sarah probably only thinks of her mother badly because of how much she loves her father, and how much this life, this thing of theirs, had its grip on her. the mob was all she knew. and i’m sure her mother tried to sway her from it, tried to get her to live a simple, quiet life, but god, sarah couldn’t just leave her father.
“a ugly, jealous drunk”, but when you realize exactly what position mrs marino was in... a killer for a husband, a daughter so deep in the mob clutches. she must’ve turned to drink, started to lash out at luigi in resentment for hiding who he was, for the company he kept, for all the secrets their marriage was built on.
these games have no sympathies for women who can see through the lies of men, the mafia, and the world they live in. none at all.

There’s a video where linguistics professor Geoff Lindsey, in order to demonstrate the natural rhythm of English speech, puts famous recitings of Shakespeare to an underlying tune of the pink panther theme and it’s addicting to listen to its so delicious how well it works

anyways that minghao interview with him saying fatphobic shit is just. very upsetting. and while i'm aware that we don't know everything about our favs, and i'm not entirely surprised he has that type of mindset, i really did think that minghao knew better than to say shit like that in an interview of all places. it's so sad to see how rampant fatphobia is in the kpop industry to the point where you see idols being blatantly fatphobic so often you're practically desensitized to it. and minghao has been an idol for years - you really can't defend him by saying his comments are a "cultural" thing when he has an international audience. i just really hope i don't see carats defending his comments. that would be a shitty thing to do.

I used to be a fan of cdream. i got into the fandom on account of reading some fanfic of him so I was interested in his story. I like villains but I don’t claim they have done nothing wrong and obviously he did bad things. So I was very disappointed on making his character a woobified ending? maybe I would have read a fanfic about it but it being his ending made me quite disappointed. blarg
No, yeah. It was such a bad ending. Even though Tommy never apologized to Dream, the idea that abusers will become better people because you understand them and show them kindness is... gross, at best, and dangerous at worst.
If you want to tell a compelling narrative of an abuse victim learning to understand their abuser, that could work! It could even work for c!Tommy since he is a very understanding character at his core. Working with the idea that an abuser is no more than just a person, you can do a lot with that and tell a great story.
Hell, I've done a lot with that! Not to bring up my own fanfics, but in the Broken Rhythms, Tommy struggles with the idea that Techno sees Dream as a monster because he sees him as a person because he knew Dream for ten years and Dream was his closest relationship.
Anyway, when it comes to why it doesn't work in canon, it's because. well. okay, Tommy understands why Dream did what he did. Because he wanted the simple, peaceful life he once had. What does that actually change?
Dream still abused Tommy. Dream still beat him to death and tortured him for months. Dream was still actively hunting him down, trying to kill him and his friends, and tormenting him psychologically.
You cannot have a character come to understand their abuser while the abuser is actively in the process of hurting them. What would have changed in their relationship? Dream, still trying to hurt Tommy, would have just gained a less resistant victim!
Seriously. Dream is now understood by Tommy. Tommy is now nice to him. Great! Dream is still his fucking abuser, by the way, and Tommy is easier to deal with because he understands why Dream does this so he fights back less. That is a horrible narrative and the only direction their relationship would have gone if they hadn't been blown up!
Remember when else Tommy was nice to Dream? Exile! Dream sure wasn't a good person then, was he?
Okay, but sure, fine. Play along. Dream is now nicer because Tommy understands him and is nice to him.
That implies that Tommy, to some degree as Dream's ongoing abuse victim, was in the wrong for fighting back.
That implies that Tommy should have some blame for how Dream treats him, like Dream's actions against Tommy are valid in some manner and don't majorily overstep the line of how to respond to things like Tommy acting out against the server authority.
That implies that the ends (having peace on the server and Dream being happy with his friends) justify the means (driving a 16 year old to suicide, murdering him, trying to kill his friends, torturing him mentally, and many other things).
That implies that by Tommy fighting back against his abuse and trying to live his life in peace without Dream, he was actively making Dream's life worse.
That implies that Tommy is at fault for Dream's abuse against him.
Seriously, it's such a bad choice. I don't know how they got it so wrong.
