You have always admired Mitsuya, he was in your eyes the embodiment of a perfect human being. You joined the sewing club solely because he was the president and it meant you got to see him more. Your decision to join his club was one you didn’t regret as not only did you learn how to sew but you were able to become good friends with the lilac haired male.

After the club was finished you headed home with Mitsuya’s company as usual, which was what you always looked forward to. While you both were walking, an old lady in front of you guys fell and dropped her bag causing her belongings to spill onto the sidewalk pavement. You both hurried over to her side and helped her up. Mitsuya helped support her to keep her steady on her feet while you quickly crouched down to pick up her stuff and swiftly shoved them back into her bag.

Standing back up you handed her bag back to her, “Here you go ma’am.” “Oh thank you both so much, you are good kids.” You both just told her that it was not a problem at all and that you guys were just doing the right thing. She gushes at you both, “You two make such a cute couple.” “We’re not a couple” You quickly interjected. The woman was surprised but quickly added, “I’m rooting for you two” before she waved a bye to you both and went on her way.

You guys then continued walking but Mitsuya was deep in his thoughts. You were calling out to him until he finally snapped out of his thoughts. “Huh, what’d you say?” He asked. “I was just asking if you wanted to grab a bite to eat, what are you thinking about?” There was a moment of silence where he contemplated if he should just come clean or not, “Back then, why’d you deny we were a couple so quickly?” Shock was visible on your face, why was he asking you this?

“Well I just thought it would make you uncomfortable since someone as perfect as you would probably take great offense as to being seen as my partner.” Now it was his turn to be shocked. “What? I would never take that as an offense, rather I see it as a miracle.” You search in his eyes to see if he was lying or not and all you saw was pure genuine reflecting in his lavender orbs. “Was that a confession?” “I guess so, I wish I prepared a better one though but I want you to know that I’m not perfect, you are, you’re perfect for me.”

You smacked your hand over your mouth. Even after hearing those words coming out of his mouth, you still couldn’t believe it. Seeing you frozen in place Mitsuya wondered if he said anything wrong. “Uh Y/N, you ok?” You finally blinked after unconsciously staring into the void. “No- yeah, I’m just beyond shocked. I like you a lot you don’t even know.” “I’m glad to hear that cause I like you a lot too and I hope I conveyed that clearly.” You smacked your hand over your mouth again, internally screaming from how he was the sweetest guy ever to exist on this earth and how you will love him till the end of time.

ok this is actually a pretty simple answer! but i got rambly so here's a readmore.

A3! (which stands for Act! Addict! Actors! <- don’t ask me why it’s this. idk) is a gacha game where you play as the manager, Izumi Tachibana (I’m doing first name, last name here) and you work to revive a dying theater company called Mankai. there’s 3 Acts, each with like, 4 big stories in them. and a bunchhhh of shorter event storiess which imo are crucial to experience. The first 2 acts, along with the interceding events, have been completely localized, and were run on the now-defunct English server. There is, however, an archive—if at any point in time you are ever interested, feel free to shoot me a message. And I’m serious. Even if it’s like two years later. It’s been like almost 3 years since I started going thru a3 and I haven’t even finished act 2. I’m slow

Anyways, Act 1 deals with establishing the company—in its former glory, there used to be four troupes that rotated by season. Izumi’s dad also used to run it, and he disappeared. So that’s why there’s four big stories each act: it’s one per season. In Act 1, each story deals with gathering the members for each season troupe together, and then pulling off their first play. And it also deals with like, the issues all the characters are facing. It is like, within the yumejoshi genre so there’s definitely that vibe of like. wow look at all these pretty boys who are kind of into me!? but I think it’s pretty mild on that point and like. something I enjoy is that I can see Izumi as like. an actual Character as opposed to just a self-insert. Which is nice. but the real selling point for me is that there’s a lot of like, found family and rich character dynamics within the cast. It is even homosexual sometimes.

One thing I find really interesting about a3 is that I think it has really strong character writing and development. And it’s really good at establishing different “moods” across each troupe, which works well in creating dynamics and also because each troupe specializes in something different. So spring is like, the “classic” troupe—they tend to do lots of reinterpretations of classic works, though that’s not exclusively their thing… but anyways. they do like. nice fantastical stories in my opinion. Summer does comedy, autumn does action, and winter does drama. and winter HAS drama.

Now up until winter there’s been some wackiness in a3 but it’s been like, pretty grounded in how it’s played out. and then winter rolls around and. see the issue with winter is that unlike some of the younger members they’re all composed of adults. so they’re bad at talking about their feelings, because instead of just shouting things out loud they will just shut down and like. Leave. I love this about them and I think it’s such a good writing choice.

Enter Tasuku Takato and Tsumugi Tsukioka. Tasuku and Tsumugi used to be like, the best of friends. they acted together and followed their passions together. and then they both auditioned for the God Troupe together, which is this prestigious famous troupe (it’s also evil.) and while tasuku got in and became one of the lead actors, tsumugi failed his audition. This left a deep scar on Tsumugi, who ended up kind of running away from acting as a vocation all together. now, Tasuku quit the God troupe because they were engaging in some shady stuff, and ended up joining Mankai along with Tsumugi, who coincidentally was inspired to try acting again. tsumugi’s been elected the leader of winter troupe, and therefore the person who’s meant to take the lead role in their first play. Tasuku is constantly snapping at him whenever he’s unconfident, and it’s just not great vibes. To top it all off, they’ve been issued a challenge by the God troupe, where they’ll both perform and the audience has to vote on which play they like better. Tsumugi is not really confident he can stand up to them for obvious reasons. Tasuku gets mad at him about it. Tsumugi runs into this weird doll, and the next day, they wake up in a time loop.

See, the thing is, they’re on such a tight deadline for the play, and winter is So Bad at talking about their feelings, that magic is real now. this is somewhat of an oversimplification, but it’s funny to say it like this. Anyways, there are like, seven mysteries in Mankai (have I mentioned they all dorm together! they all do! Each of them has a roommate and they all live in a big dorm that’s connected to their own theater and stage. It’s part of why they’re in such big debt and trouble at the beginning—its really hard to maintain those facilities) and one of them is about this doll that will put you in a time loop unless you become friends. essentially. And this is what happens… eventually they end up talking to each other for real due to the time loop, and each affirms just how much they respect the acting of the other. later on when Tsumugi slips back into being unconfident tasuku is able to resolve his past mistakes, because part of why he was so angry at Tsumugi was also because he was angry at himself for like. not reaching out. And telling him how much he loved him and his acting. Because their styles are very different—tasuku is loud and commanding, and Tsumugi is a more understated and subtle.

A3 is also very very cool in that parts of its plays mirror real life? so like. this play, sympathy for an angel, has two leads: Michael (Tsumugi) and Raphael (Tasuku). In it, Michael becomes interested in this woman on a list of people who are about to die, and ends up visiting the human world. He writes letters to her. His friend, Raphael, warns him against this, saying that he’s foolish for going so far for someone he can’t even meet. And each time he steps into the human world, his own soul gets weaker, and his wings begin to wither. Still, he persists against objections. Eventually, the woman recovers, gets a fiancé, and he returns to heaven. Thinking he’ll just wish for her happiness even with his unrequited love, he looks at the list and finds out that despite recovering, she’s still on the close to death list. Despite the danger to himself, he descends into the human world, and takes her place in a car accident. As he’s dying, his soul about to be obliterated because he’s been in the human world too often, Raphael descends and holds him in his arms. Michael says that he’s happy he got to do something for the person he loves, and he’s happy to be held by his best friend. Raphael says that though he’d called Michael the fool, it was him that truly was one: because he stood by, unable to protect both the person he loves and his best friend. Because he was in love with Michael the whole time of course. And then Michael dies in his arms. Now this makes me weepy as does the accompanying character song but what I really love most about it is like. Raphael’s regrets in that he didn’t protect Michael kind of directly mirror Tasuku’s own regrets in being unable to help Tsumugi when he was going through a tough time? only Tsumugi isn’t dead and so Tasuku has an actual chance to fix things, which is sweet.

It should be mentioned that one guy in the spring troupe WRITES all of these plays which is deeply funny to me bc it means that 1) he is probably gay and doesn’t know this and 2) he has precognitive abilities regarding the inner psyche of all of his castmates. and that’s a3 timeloop day. some of these a3 characters have me by the throat btw I just get beamed visions of them chatting and introspecting like constantly. I definitely haven’t explained everything but I think this is enough?

YEAH!!! it was really fun, i was actually studying when i got that ask and it was a nice little break thinking about going to a lavender farm with you and a plushie hehe :3 and thank you!!! drawing IS really fun!!! it was a lot more fun than i thought it would be. the reason i set those specific goals is because i work best with like little steps at a time because otherwise i get overwhelmed and too hard on myself and procrastinate or just stop because i'm Not Perfect...breaking it up into pieces helps and it helps me focus too ^^ chess and baking ARE fun! i used to just play chess.com but now sometimes i play with friends, it's really nice! i even bought a snazzy new chessboard and the pieces have gold borders it's so pretty c: baking is nice too because if you made the sweets yourself it doesn't matter how many you eat or how much sugar is in them it doesn't count. it's in the quran god said that himself. also you said you'd like to see more drawings in the future? how about NOW!!!

i have to admit i drew the bunnies (EXCEPT for the last bunny and the miffy bunny. the last bunny came from me staring intently at a picture of a rabbit and the miffy bunny came from my bountiful imagination and creative soul), the bird (not the rooster the other one idk the name) and the peace sign hand with a step by step guide but i'm still proud of myself ^^ one day i will give that woman a body. maybe she'll even have clothes. i'm still working out how to draw clothes but maybe... also someday i'll paint a really big hand writing with a fountain pen and paint the hand's nails with real nail polish and write the pen strokes with a real fountain pen and it'll be so awesome and shaded so nicely. another one of my Ultimate Goals. also yeah it's so fucked up that they don't ship to usamerica...god made up time zones and shipping distances to punish people who wanted cool stuff and wanted to be friends despite not living in the same country like he made up language to punish people for the tower of babel. my theory. ok byeee ^^ giggles so sweetly and kisses your cheek back and is so great also and loves you too and dies instantly and painlessly because i was standing so close to you when you exploded i was instantly flash fossilized. but that's okay i forgive you. because i love you. bye 💖💖💖

Top 10 Heartstopper Moments (including books, if you've read them)

Oh lorddddddd you’re really out here asking the hard questions huh. Ok. I’m gonna go from the show because while I have read the books it was only once last fall and at this point the show is ingrained in my brain so it’s easier to reference. Also these aren’t really in order of importance because I love all of them. A lot.

1. The first kiss scene!! Omg the tension, the stares, the pinky touches, the toe scooch, Charlie being SO BRAVE, jesus every single thing was so top tier and SO. WELL. ACTED. Insane. It’s insane!! I literally can’t sit still while watching it. Even the music placement was perfect. And the animations of course.

2. The kiss/convo/hug in Charlie’s bedroom This was one of the scenes that won Kit his Emmy I s2g. The actual kiss (hands!! tippytoes!!), the confusion after, Charlie’s reassuring look and comforting hug, all of it was, again, so well acted and emotional and uhhhhh I can’t with these two!!!

3. Nick’s speech to Charlie in the hallway Quite possibly the most perfect romantic declaration of feelings speech in any show or movie maybe ever??? And I love the parallel from earlier; instead of Nick making a move to stop the nervous stream of consciousness chatter from Charlie, it’s Charlie reassuring Nick and kissing him to stop Nick’s nervous babbling. Just shows how perfect these two are for each other 🥰

4. The photobooth scene They’re just soooo cuuutteeee and the pictures are ADORABLE; Charlie finally getting the date he’s always wanted is so important and honestly the whole beach day is precious.

5. Tara and Darcy’s kiss (and Nick’s reaction) This one hits me right in the feels. There’s so much joy and love and happiness in this, with the perfect beat drop and the rainbow animation. And Nick’s face!!! He wants what they have!! He knows he can get it with Charlie!! It’s a fantastic moment for Tara and Darcy and a wonderful motivator for Nick in terms of plot progression.

6. The bowling alley/arcade party This one might be cheating cause it has 4 of my fav moments but we’ll lump them all together anyway. First, the shot of Nick smiling at Charlie during bowling. Boy is literally the definition of heart eyes. Then, the hug. Charlie’s face goes from sad to happy so perfectly and the animations are lovely. Then there’s the gift giving and “that was just one of my favorite days ever” 😭😭 Finally there’s the kiss. So soft and sweet and fluffy. THEY MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS.

7. Charlie running after Nick/the kiss in the rain Charlie literally being like “hi, *cheesy line*, *kiss*, okay bye!!! 😄” and running off. I love him so much!! It’s a perfect capture of butterflies and being impulsively in love, and I have been OBSESSED with What’s It Gonna Be since I first watched it. Actually I’ve been obsessed with the whole soundtrack lbr haha.

8. Nick’s talk with Imogene in the park Another Emmy winning moment. Kit played it SO. WELL. It’s not really a coming out, per say, but to have him phrase how he’s been feeling in a way that Imogene can also identify with in terms of not really fitting in with their group of friends anymore is GENIUS. Alice you amazing writer you.

9. Nick’s coming out scene We knew this one was gonna be on here. God it makes me cry every time. IMPECCABLE acting from both Kit and Olivia and so so important to a lot of people out there, including my bisexual self.

10. The first hug The “you look so cuddly like that” and subsequent hug at Charlie’s house KILLLLL MEEEEEEE. I’m a sucker for hugs anyway so to have it be so soft and slightly awkward followed by Tori’s “I don’t think he’s straight” is PERFECTION. Sheer and utter perfection.

Bonus 11. Handholding/movie theater moments Yes Ep 7 was ROUGH but the “Char” moment, Nick’s face (again!) as he stares at Charlie with heart eyes, and all the pinky and hand holding during the movie was a nice bright spot. My husband Nick (yes Nick, I know lol) and I call each other dork all the time so Charlie leaning up and whispering “you’re a dork” with a giant grin on his face was extra special for me. Also the gay nerd and rugby lad teasing. They’re such good friends and that’s another reason I love them as a couple. They genuinely like each other and find comfort in each other’s company.

Oh jesus I didn’t mention the snow day, or the rugby training montage (Charlie’s little giggle and Nick’s flushed cheeks get me every time), Charlie’s little dance after getting asked on a date, the milkshake cafe, Nick and Tara’s friendship, Tori hugging Charlie, Tori just in general with her older sister magic and snarky comments, running up the stairs at the party, Nick punching Harry, Nick telling Charlie he told Tara and Darcy about them and Charlie’s utter joy at hearing that, the wanting to hold hands on the couch, Nick’s “what? what’s up?”, or about a bajillon other things that make this show my favorite of all time. Seriously how can I pick 10 (or 11 lol) moments??!!!! Everything about this show - writing, acting, music, cinematography, the animations, guh everything is just toooo perfect.

*cracks my fingers* i want to write an actual review of the books i just read, all of us villains + all of our demise. both books were read within a month, and i fucking devoured them. i did most reading when i had time during school, and rarely got to sit down and devote large blocks of attention to the book, so some parts may be disjointed in this review. hi @see

ok, 4/5 stars. i take that star off for literally one reason! spoilers for the sequel below

WHY THE FUCK DID ISOBEL AND REID START DATING? WHAT ON EARTH? it confused me so bad. like yeah stressful situations create bonds but reid kidnapped her and she was terrified of him for days. and we’re just going to accept that she starts liking him? i dont like reid at all. sometimes he was entertaining, but he mostly served as a bad comic relief. to be honest, i did skip some scenes with them bc i found the relationship so annoying. so i mightve missed something, but i dont believe in relationships stemming from kidnapping. yeah they kidnapped each other, (times reid was kidnapped count is at 3) but man. isobel does not have a good track record with boys. she was one of my fave characters but i feel like her end with reid didnt do her plotline justice. the characters are hero, villain, princess (damsel?), and underdog. (not my words i got that from another post) and the beginning of isobels story subverted the princess stereotype wonderfully, i liked the media aspect and how she was manipulayted by her family and friends (story wise. not a good thing) but her final choices never made sense. after she returned to the tower her story went off course. isobel whyyyyyyyy

ok now for other aspects of the story. alistair and gavin were a wonderful pair. it was very unexpected after the first book since they barely interacted, but very nice. i was reading the romantic moment in the middle of class so i didnt get to abosrb the words a lot but i thought their story was lovely. who doesnt love a kiss when someones dying! it was kinda funny that they were making out while there was a corpse on the ground and who knows if the attackers retreated. their epilogue ending was. sure. but it was fitting for them both. i liked their character development and i miss hendry so bad i loved his character. i liked the entire cottage living part. it was rlly funny that well briony and the others were fighting for their lives up in the tower they were fucking cleaning. just fucking cleaning but cleaning to the death. imagine how fucking mad briony would be if she heard that.

speaking of briony....... i guess it was expected. i didnt think all 5 of them would survive. fucked up that she died in the castle though. i think if she died then finley shouldve been focused on more, but briony sacrificing herslef seemed like a fitting end. she played the hero till the very end, sacrificing herself in the house of the villain. ohhhhhhhh brionyyyyyy.

ok overall great modern fantasy story. i loved the media aspect and how the world is watching the brutality like hawks. a fantastic work in the ya genre. thank you ms mac for not caring that i was always on my phone reading instead of doing work. ok thats enough of my thoughts i was more focused on the characters. bye bye goodnight

i'm in the middle of my third time reding this, gathering my thoughts for a review, and i wanna point out some things real quick

- balcony memories on new years and now on christmas!

- yoongi calls the reader love and i don't even know how to react lol almost swallowed my fist when i realized it

- i'm not 100% sure, but i remember that when the reader finds out about vmin, it's in a context of taehyung acting weird for a while and then saying some stuff about no one likes to be hidden and shit. so it's so so so nice to read they're getting more comfortable to be publicly together (idk if their group knows, but it's p likely)

- if i got it right (and that's a stretch bc my first reads are super dumb lol) the reader was cheated during christmas, right? and, besides, there's some shared trauma with bro, something that happened eight years ago and all, and since there's a bunch of dialogues of bro having to look out for the reader and being her only family, i'm guessing their parents died? can't be sure but... seems pretty likely

- i felt the atmosphere here seemed a bit different from the other chapters (especially bc now i'm reading it all again for reviews). i'm not quite sure what's changed, but i'll investigate. it created a whole different effect, an euphoria and intensity (not the angsty type) that i can't quite place rn... 🤔

anyway, i'm still processing everything ok

but i just wanna say once again, that all your hard work definitely payed off! i'm sorry you had to stress so much over it :( but it truly is perfect. you keep throwing those mesmerizing works everytime and i just can't believe an author like you exists. i'm completely addicted to the way you create and window was just another proof of how talented you are.

i'll sleep now cus it's super late lol and i'm not thinking straight. today at work i was randomly smiling and flushing bc something about the chapter randomly came to mind and my coordinator was throwing me looks like 🧐

as far as this commentary, i think it feels different bc we don't know if it's canon, but they're still themselves - if that makes sense? like the characters are being the same people but the environment coupled with the "side arc" aspect is probably what gives this one a different ambiance. it's a holiday special!! gotta have that sparkly tint on it, too.

and as far as the parents, we don't know yet. but we're slowly getting more and more info the further we get into the story, and i'm sure the full backstory will reveal itself in due time. but you're right about all the bro looking out for reader and all the pressure and stuff. and despite all the tension surrounding bro, the siblings are tight. we'll explore all of that as we go along!

Chapter 1: Nightmares

Tomorrow was a very special and important day, perhaps the most important in the entire ocean, and everything, everything, had to be utterly perfect. The king would not tolerate imperfections in any regard when it came to his beloved and revered wife Queen Athena.

It had been a long day of preparations for the events to come tomorrow, and now it was getting late. King Triton was exhausted, but nothing could stop him from being there to tuck his seven blessed daughters into bed every night. 

“Oh the waves roll low… and the waves roll high…”

A siren’s call entranced him, he could never possess the will power to resist following it. As he pulled back the flowery seaweed tapestry entrance, he saw the most special sight in the world. Each of his little princesses scattered around the royal nursery, cuddling plush toys, brushing their hair, settling into their abalone shell beds to dream until morning.

“And so it goes, and so it goes, under a bright blue endless sky…”

On the other end of the room was a mostly open wall giving the most fantastical view of the golden city sprawled out for miles below. Athena perched herself on the open window sill, a perfect painting of a Queen with her whole king down behind her. Her melodic voice carrying on the tides and lulling her precious treasures to sleep.

“Waves try to measure, the days that we treasure…”

Athena glided to tiny baby Ariel, kissing her forehead. Her kind husband joined her tucking in their youngest, making sure she was perfectly swaddled in her flower woven blankets.

“Wave hello…and wave good bye.”

The king took his lover’s hand, and together they floated to the entrance.

“Under a bright endless sky…”

Each of their children had slipped asleep, and arm in arm the Queen and King left. 

“Good night girls.”

 The royal couples wedding anniversary was the grandest holiday of the year, and no expense or luxury was spared. King Triton had personally planned every detail, for no one knew what his wife would love the way he did. It was to take place at the mermaid lagoon, a beautiful island cove Athena had spent much of her youth and was her favorite place. She had grown up a bay mermaid, not a city one, and at times the Queen couldn’t help but be homesick. Her husband knew it, no matter how much she hide and denied it.

But it wasn’t just the location that was special, he had ensured a spectacular show of magic and music. For his wife had been a passionate scholar of the enchantments and the arts her whole life, before becoming Queen she had even been planning to go study magic under the sirens. A race of octopus like merfolk, known for having an ancient and powerful control of magic. 

Of course everyone knew magic and art went hand in hand, to the point that many argued there was no difference between the two. Yet it wouldn’t be the king’s royal orchestral court that would play today, Athena could listen to them any time they want. How would that be special? No, he had secretly enlisted the finest local musician of the isles and bays famous for their completely unique jazzy and snappy music. Far too informal for the courts of Atlantica, but it was the music Athena grew up with, the kind she loved. It’s originality attributed to its origin in the bay mermaids combining the human sailor style of song with their own aquatic traditions, embued with a bit of special bay merfolk branded enchantments.

“Ok my love, you can open your eyes now.”

The Queen’s emerald eyes sparkled at the sight, the melodies swelled, rainbows and and rain of sparkles being woven by the most talented illusionaries in the ocean. All the flowers surrounding the lagoon burst into full bloom, with a little help from the expert botanists of the city leading up to the event. Their beautiful daughters in their laughing and playing in the calmer tides of the cove.

King Triton took his wife’s hand, and with the other he presented her with his anniversary gift. She took the gold and cerulean shell in her hand, and with her delicate hands she unhatched the locket. 

Instantly a golden radiance appeared and inside of the clam locket she saw her and her husband, dancing in each other’s arms, their song playing as they twirled. With a small gasp she put her slender fingers to her rosy lips.

King Triton cradled her face in his strong hand, and sang softly to her. “Under an endless sky.”

She giggled, “Our song.”

He put his hand under her chin, tilting her hand towards him ever so slightly. As he leaned in for a kiss, they were interrupted by a chorus of giggles.

The couple snickered, and Triton playfully shushed Athena. Then in an instant he was in the water, scooping up their girls and tossing them into the air as they laughed and dove back into the water. 

Then as quickly as it had began, it had to end. The light illusions vanished instantly, and the clouds being held at bay started to roll in. The merfolk looked around in instant dread and fear, and with gasps and screams they saw a ship heading towards them.

Yet this wasn’t any ship, it wasn’t merchants, or sea faring men who go about the oceans thinking merfolk are nothing but fairy tales in their sailor songs. No, this was a ship know to all merfolk, and especially known by those who lived among the isles. A pirate ship famous for raiding the coast for their favorite loot, the otherworldly magical kind that came from the depths below.

There was a panic, and everyone dove in different directions trying get as far below the surface as they could. Athena looked to her daughters, terror and confusion written all over their innocent faces. King Tritin got to them first, but only fast enough to grab their youngest. Athena rushed to her children, but not before the stampede slammed into the rest with complete disregard. Sending them either crashing into rocks or below the surface. The Queen dove below the water, long enough to count five of her kids get away with others into the darkness of the waves. Her husband had Ariel, which meant someone was missing. 

As the merfolk fled the pirates plundered, grabbing all the treasures the merfolk left behind in the panic. Sharp hooks thrown over board, harpoons threatening themselves from the sides of the ship, men hooping and hollering as they drew their blades. 

Athena rushed back to the surface, frantically searching for her missing child. Her husband still cradled Ariel, hesitating to rush below the surface without his entire family in tow.

Attina had been thrown into the rocks in the chaos, one landing directly on her tail fin. Pinning her to the outcropping and drawing blood, her face instantly twisting into pain.

The mother’s heart twisted, instantly recognizing the cries of her first born baby. She rushed to her child, adrenaline fueling her entire body as she lifted to massive rubble off her daughter. She could lift it just barely, but it was just enough for Triton to snatch her eldest away.

Athena screamed at her husband, “Go!” And he knew better than to question her. 

“Close your eyes girls, don’t look.”

Athena had listened to her father, but Ariel hadn’t.

Their mother couldn’t get away in time, the ship didn’t stop, the bow slamming into her back at full speed. The water turning red…

There was a lightning strike and suddenly it wasn’t her mother. Her hair turned black, her wide green eyes turning sky blue, eyebrows like her father’s. All of suddenly it wasn’t her mother she was watching die, it was her daughter, it was her sweet baby Melody. 

Ariel screamed herself awake, her skin cold and clammy, her body trembling. Eric wrapped his arms around her instantly, and with an understanding silence he cradled his wife to his chest.

blinking and seeing shots from the video game at times, uncanny as hell (for joel and marlene especially).

Prologue

Incredibly rude of them to give us so much time with Sarah. When I first played the game, I have to admit the prologue didn't move me much. I'd already osmosised it and wanted to get to the next level.

But here? IDK if it was seeing a normal day for her, that I'm older, or that it was live-action, but this gutted me ;_; A+ acting all around

A particularly devastating change from the game is Joel crying for Tommy to help him while Tommy does nothing, because Tommy for once is the pragmatic sibling - he knows his niece is dying and that there is nothing he can do but watch

The way runners move is creepy in the best way, like they're marionettes being pulled along by the fungus in their brains and the body is barely keeping up

They faked out us game-players with the lack of a T-bone crash!! And while we're still confused, boom, here's a fucking plane.

The opening sequence is pretty. Wonder if the fungi growth will change as the season progresses if so, how. I'd love for a map of the journey.

I'm neutral on the shift from 2013 to 2003 but I did enjoy spotting all the pointers to it: Tommy as a Gulf War veteran, the Bush photo in the classroom, Joel's phone, and Sarah asking if the virus is from terrorists

"This has been construction corner with Joel Miller." I have never thought about Joel's pre-outbreak job in that context before

The only improvement I'd ever want to the original video game would be Joel providing construction commentary during gameplay, that'd be fantastic and educational ok

"If you tell me to look for the light I'll break your fucking jaw" <3 this is that grumpy guy who only looks out for him and his, no notes, same with the way he Does Not Care At All about anyone other than Tommy and Sarah during the outbreak scene, bye Denise, by random family, etc.

LMAO he sent Ellie right into that wall honestly surprised she didn't get more hurt from it. also loved the entire thing with the knife

I saw comments that Joel is softer here than in the games and I don't know if I quite agree. Any changes on that spectrum have more to do with the medium of live-action television versus the medium of shooter video games. Like, Joel killing thirty guys in a city feels very different in the latter than the former, but Joel in either canon is a very brutal dude. But more on that later.

Unlike at this point in the game, he seems to have been in recent contact with Tommy, even if he's accused Marlene of turning Tommy against him. Looking forward to seeing learning what exactly their last communication was about, especially since Joel going after Tommy shifts his motivation

Tommy in the show is also very much the younger brother in a way that's not as emphasized in the games. Joel jokes Tommy's dependent on him, and Tommy is used to his brother bailing him out of jail

Ellie

So, so good

The vulnerability with which she reacts to the mere mention of Riley's name versus the bravado with which she attacks Joel versus the mixture of both when she asks Marlene why she can't go home

“are you my fucking mom or something” / “do I look like your mom?” / “no” cracked up the entire theater at the screening I went to LOL, I love this kid

The fireflies locking her up and Marlene explaining to her the implications makes a lot of sense as an unseen prelude to the game's events

Perhaps am pre-emptively daydreaming about a Part II adaptation with her already

That final scene

The focus is not on the reveal of Ellie's infection/immunity (as much as poor Tess is freaking the fuck out about it) but on the brutality that Joel is capable of

Much like the end of the season, I suspect

And obviously Joel's reaction here has little to do with Ellie directly. She's cargo. Dude is just straight up triggered.

Even more intriguing to me than Joel's outsized attack is Ellie's reaction to it

In the game, Joel and Tess efficiently dispatch two soldiers after Ellie stabs one, and Ellie is freaked out by it, saying she thought they'd hold up the soldiers, not kill them

Here, on the other hand, Ellie's eyes frickin light up at Joel wailing on that FEDRA guard, she even shifts around to the side for a better look.

Earlier, she asked what Joel was capable of. She's neither horrified nor panicked by the answer, only transfixed.

I don't hate it as a change (the FEDRA school situation is defined vaguely enough that there's wide range of the answers for what kind of violence Ellie's observed imo, just that she's never killed anyone herself) so I'm curious to see if this is a throughline

Especially in contrast to Sarah's horror at Joel taking down the zombie in the prologue

Future Episodes

Joel and Tess discuss Bill and Frank. Looks like someone's alive! Am terrified of what the outcome is going to be for them though, given the Depeche Mode song playing at the end and their fates in the game
