Broke: Acknowledging that a character who is an objectively terrible person is also a complex and intentionally well thought out individual with different levels of nuance you can empathize with in some ways while not in others is immediately “woobifying” or “poor little meow meowifying” them.
Woke: “This character is a bad person” and “this character is still a person” are two statements that can, should and do coexist and admitting that they exhibit nuance and depth and are more than just their bad actions doesn’t immediately excuse or condone their bad actions or mean that you’re ignoring or trying to soften the canonical version of the character.
Bespoke: That’s the whole point, that’s always been the point, to be made to empathize with horrible people so you can understand that they can be anyone, that bad people can be likeable, can be interesting, can be human, are human, and it’s scary to think about all the ways they’re just like you and all the ways they’re just like everything you hate, forcing the use of critical skills in media analysis, forcing a confrontation of the duality of man.
Whatever Level is Above Bespoke: But sometimes, yeah, sure, maybe they are a poor little meow meow, what are you gonna do, get a lawyer

not to sound like a ray apologist but thinking about his behaviour after remembering he is in love with his best friend and everyone knows it and also knows he'll never be good enough for it to be reciprocated, hes a shit ton of poor decisions in a trenchcoat and no one cares, he has the glossiest poutiest lips that go chronically underappreciated and unkissed, he lives only because nothing has killed him yet, he's given up on receiving his fathers love to the point that even feeling his anger and disappointment is just a stale experience and a chore, he sleeps one room away from where he found his moms dead body- having chosen to make a home for himself in the same place she caged her misery, and he is 22 years old. all things considered id personally be so much worse.

Okay if I got a dollar every time I hyperfixate on a plot with two (twin)brothers who suffered immense psychological trauma in childhood, hence older brother became a psychopathic menace with his own goals (destroying humanity) , who’s an introvert and enjoys art; and more sensible and empathetic depressed younger brother who copes and hides his depression by humour and tries to save everyone and stop his brother, then trying to bring him to redemption.. I would have two dollars.

I expected to really like Astarion but I didn't expect to like him in the way I would like a mean stray cat that has nonetheless formed an attachment to me. I want him to be happy and well and perhaps learn not to bite people unprovoked. I am picking him up by the scruff of his neck. Carefully.

This scene is so chilling because you can tell that he's struggling with his anger. His first thought is always to react with blind rage, but then, like in the case of him seeing that he really hurt the other guy, he immediately snaps out of it, gets scared, and then leaves.
In other words, I don't think Mike is a bad person. I honestly think he struggles to control his emotions and doesn't always understand certain social cues. And all of this is exacerbated by his alcoholism that he slowly succumbs back to (due to feeling abandoned, betrayed, and thrown away again).
This man deserves some understanding, patience, comforting words, and a big ol' hug.
