[An Immortal Among Stars Masterlist]
Day 3 (Team Whump) of @whumpawoman's Whump Girl Summer event.
contents: lady whump, immortal whumpee, betrayal, drugging, strapped to a table, implied lab whump, death.
~~~
Pain was always an effective wake-up call.
Karita's eyes snapped open and she gasped, not yet conscious enough to process what was happening and scream. The brief pain instantly passed anyway, and she was left confused, her mind shrouded in fog, her breathing uneven.
"Take it slow, dear. We have nothing but time." The voice was vaguely familiar and its tone was warm, but it filled Karita's heart with fear. Still groggy, she tried to move, only to discover that she couldn't, that there was something keeping her limbs pinned to whatever she was lying on. Restraints. She was strapped down, but why? She had been with the others, sitting on the ground with her knees pulled up to her chest, leaning her head on Brin's shoulder. They were relaxing, drinking mulled white wine, and hers tasted a bit strange, but she didn't dare bring it up. It was still alright, it was warm, and she didn't really care about anything else.
And then she must have fallen asleep.
She finally managed to focus her swimmy gaze on the person standing next to her, and her blood ran cold.
"Hello," Iris said with a warm smile, as if she wasn't talking to someone strapped to a table, as Karita finally realized. "You were out cold for a while, you know? I was getting worried."
"Where are the others?" Karita rasped, squirming to test the leather straps wound tight around her wrists and ankles, only to confirm that they were firmly holding her down. "What did you do to them?!"
"Oh dear," Iris winced with… sympathy? "You still… Well, they're safe." Karita's momentary relief was nipped in the bud by the words that followed. "They're not here. We had a deal, and they fulfilled their end of it."
"What?"
"I was to leave them alone, and the price…" She leaned down and gently brushed Karita's hair away from her forehead. "Was the immortal."
The world stopped, and Karita swore she could feel her heart break. Would they really do this to her? Brin, Ilona, Yua, they… they’d never.
"Bullshit," she choked out. "You're lying, what did you do to them?"
"I'm sorry, dear, I really am. It must be hard for you to accept, but it's the truth. They drugged you, didn't they?"
The wine. Of course.
"I wanted to hunt you down, every single one of you, and get back what was mine." Iris circled the table, slowly, simply following her flair for the dramatic, which normally would be laughable, but now was nothing short of terrifying. "But by the time I found you… it was gone. I was furious, I'm not going to lie, but then I got an offer I couldn't refuse. It was a win-win situation, they would be left alone, and I would get you."
Karita shook her head, but what was meant to be a sign of defiance came across as pitiful denial. It made too much sense. Something changed when they found out about her immortality. She sensed their apprehension, so she answered any questions they had, apologized for keeping it a secret, hoping they would trust her again, and at first it seemed like they did.
Normally telling people about her immortality was a relief. This time it appeared to have doomed her.
"It's a bit sad, though. They told me they'd try to talk to you, get you to give yourself up to me. Did they do that?"
"No." Karita's voice was barely louder than a whisper. Iris nodded with a sad smile.
"And would you have agreed?"
Her instinctive answer was another no, but when she tried to imagine her reaction before the… the betrayal, which still sounded too surreal to be true, she realized that she might have agreed. She was immortal. She would be fine, wouldn't she? She always was, eventually.
They could have figured it out together. They could have deceived Iris, hand Karita over for a while, and then wait for an opportunity to strike. They could have even killed Iris, and everything would have been alright.
She stayed silent.
"You poor thing," Iris sighed. "Trust me, I know how it feels to be betrayed. That's why I live here alone." She smiled another jarring warm smile. "But now neither of us is alone, right, dear? And you’re going to help me so much."
And then she pressed a button, activating the strange device attached to the edge of the table right behind Karita's head, and her body lit up with pain, the same kind that had woken her up, concentrated in her heart, but finding its way into every nerve. It grew, transformed, turned into pure agony that finally made her scream as the machine ripped her life essence out of her body, condensing it in a glass vial. Iris smiled as she watched it fill with the shimmering substance, bright and mesmerizing.
"You truly are more valuable than any artifact," she crooned, but Karita didn't hear her.
When she first met her group, the people she'd grown to think of as her family, she was a captive too, chained up in a cell with Yua. When Brin and Ilona came to the rescue, they saved both of them, took care of Karita, welcomed her with open arms, and treated her like one of their own ever since.
Right before she died, first time of many in this place, more agonizing than the pain was the overwhelming realization that if they had known about her immortality, in their eyes she would have no longer been worth saving.
Akali’s house was huge.
The place could’ve been a mansion. It was immediately noticeable as soon as Felix made his way down the sidewalk, standing at least a floor or two higher than all the others along the street, with large room additions jutting out, just contributing to its massive size. Their garage and driveway had to be double the size of the rest, wrapping around the corner of the street, all fenced by round, well-trimmed bushes. Felix hopped up the front steps, a car pulling into the driveway behind him. Winola was in the front, along with a woman who must’ve been her mother. Slowly, she got out, with her usual sour expression, like the mere thought of being alive disgusted her. Felix smiled at her as she reluctantly trudged towards him, joining him at the door.
He knocked, and the door swung open, revealing an older girl with long dark blue hair and red eyes similar to Akali’s, holding it open with a smile - Akali’s older sister, Ilona. “Hi Felix, and you must be the other babysitter.” She turned to Winola.
Winola gave her a nod. “Come on in.” Ilona said, to which she opened the door wider, allowing the both of them in.
Inside, five little kids were quietly reading in the living room, seated on a couple wide leather couches with fluffy pillows and large blankets draped over the backs. They ranged in age, the oldest being two twin boys with ginger hair and freckles who must’ve been around ten, and the youngest no more than two, sitting on one of her sisters lap, the final sibling curled up next to them.
Felix glanced around the house, which seemed to be even more vast on the inside. Even though he’d known Akali for the past eleven years, he’d never actually been inside his house, or met any of his siblings besides Ensio and Ilona once or twice when they were younger. His house was extremely nice and clean, which didn’t really surprise Felix, seeing as Akali was the biggest germaphobe he knew, the countertops almost sparkling and all their furniture expensive and high quality, not a single piece of dust to be seen.
Akali was all suited up, standing next to his parents and an older guy, also with dark blue hair and red eyes. Ensio, his older brother. Akali glanced to Felix with a small nod, then to Winola, looking both shocked to see her yet also relieved at the same time. “We’ll be home at around seven.” He said, as his parents, Ilona and Ensio all started to head towards the door. “That’s Jimbo, Jambo, Cadi, Letha, and Ovia.” Ensio added, pointing to each of the kids.
Akali’s mom turned and said something in Korean to all the kids, and they waved goodbye, probably the most well behaved children Felix had ever seen.
“Oh, and don’t burn the house down.” Ensio said with a grin, the last one out the door. His eyes flickered towards his younger brothers and then to Felix and Winola, but it was very unclear as to who the message was directed at.
Felix eyed Winola and shrugged, the latter looking lost at how quiet and calm Akali’s siblings were. Her expression now appeared to be even more miserable, like she wished she could just be anywhere except babysitting Akali’s siblings with him.
Suddenly, Jimbo and Jambo looked up from their book in unison, making direct eye contact with the two of them. Felix grinned at the two brothers.
“Why’s your head so big?” Jambo questioned him, as Jimbo said bluntly to Winola, “You smell like a forest.”
“Why are you wearing a cowboy hat?” Felix countered.
“Cause cowboys are cool, unlike you.” Jambo shot back, speaking in a thick country accent, which was very obviously fake.
Felix jumped onto the couch beside him, undeterred. “What are you reading?”
Jambo lifted up the huge book, which was so hefty in size that he seemed to be struggling with its weight. Looking at it closer, Felix found it was actually a university-level textbook labelled ‘The Wonders and Profits of Agriculture’. Felix wasn’t even sure he’d be able to sit through that, much less a ten-year-old kid.
Hiding his complete and utter disbelief, he continued to smile at Jambo. “That’s interesting! You like farming?”
Jambo raised an eyebrow, giving him the side eye. “Do you not like farming?”
Felix shrugged. “Farming’s fun, I’m sure.”
“You don’t know how to farm, do you?” Jambo said, still staring at him pointedly. Felix had never felt so much animosity coming from a kid before.
“Actually, I’m an expert.”
Jambo crossed his arms for a moment. “Then let’s have a farm-off.”
“And where are we going to do that?” Felix eyed him. He had been babysitting since he was probably eleven, but there was something about Akali’s siblings that was so very odd. Jimbo was going onto Winola about living in the wilderness and surviving getting mauled by wolves, which Winola didn’t seem very interested in. Letha, Cadi, and Ovia still read their books on the separate couch, relatively quiet and calm.
“In the backyard.” Jambo said, like it was obvious. He set his heavy textbook down on the couch and walked over to Jimbo, who was still retelling his and Jambo’s adventures in the wild. Jimbo turned, and they exchanged a few looks, seeming to be telepathically communicating, before nodding and heading towards the backyard. Slowly, Letha, Cadi, and Ovia followed.
They all made it to the door, their backyard coming into view. Felix found himself staring at two acres of land stretching out, along with a beautiful garden blooming with different vegetables and plants. There was more bushes lining the perimeter of the property, growing along with tall trees and vibrant flowers.
Jimbo and Jambo lead them out further, towards a large stretching path of fresh soil. There were two buckets of potatoes placed by the soil, and Jimbo and Jambo both grabbed one.
“The challenge is to plant as many potatoes as you can in five minutes.” Jimbo explained, handing Felix a bucket. “It’s you verses Jambo. Winola and I will be judges.”
Jimbo headed over next to Winola, who was staring off into the distance, completely miserable. “You will be rated on four categories. Speed, presentation, amount, and technique. You can pick which field you would like. Each bucket has forty potatoes, so we’ll count the leftovers and subtract them from the total. Get ready at the count of five.”
Felix lined up on the left field, Jambo taking the right. He had a determined, fiery look in his eyes, scanning the field like his life depended on it.
Jimbo started to count down, finally yelling “GO!” and Jambo immediately spurred into action.
Felix watched as he started to plant at lightning speed, moving throughout the field, but not sloppily, each potato placed with care. By the time Felix had started, trying to replicate him, Jambo was already half way done with his bucket.
The rest of Akali’s siblings watched in awe, mesmerized by Jambo’s skill. It was only three minutes in but he had already planted every single potato, turning back to fix up the soil while he waited for the timer to finish.
“TIME IS UP!” Jimbo called out just as Felix was rushedly finishing with his bucket. The two of them stood back, as Jimbo yanked Winola down to eye level and whispered to her.
They conversed for a bit, before Jimbo walked up to them again. “Okay, we have come to a very obvious and not surprising decision!” Jimbo called. “The winner is Jambo, who scored a perfect ten out of ten on every category!”
Everyone cheered and clapped (minus Winola) and the siblings ran over to Jambo, congratulating him and celebrating.
“SUCK IT YOU BOWL CUT LOSER!” They screamed, all before running back inside.
Winola looked like she was trying not to laugh. The two of them followed the kids back in, heading back into the living room where the five were all jumping and running around, pumped up from Jambo’s win.
“Do you guys wanna play Magical Kingdom?” Asked Letha, looking up at them with a smile.
“Sure.” Felix sat down on the couch. “How does Magical Kingdom go?”
“I’m the Queen, Jimbo and Jambo are knights, and Cadi and Ovia are princesses! Then I fight the evil Dioles using my magical powers because I’m a good Diole!”
“A good Diole?”
“Yeah!” Letha said with a grin. “And then I use my powers to fight the bad guys!”
“What powers do you have?”
“I’ll show you!” Letha swung back, jumping up and decking Felix in the face. Felix blinked, too taken aback to even react.
Jimbo and Jambo burst into a fit of giggles and Letha dashed off, sprinting up the stairs with a huge grin on her face.
“Wait, Letha!” Felix jumped up from his spot on the couch, still too in shock to think logically. “Get back down here!”
She glanced back once to smile at him cheekily, running into a room near the top of the stairs. Felix followed her up, immediately getting the door slammed in his face.
“Letha?” Felix entered, glancing around wildly for her.
Letha was giggling, sitting in someone’s lap.
It was a girl, with long blue hair pulled up into a ponytail, a few strands framing her face. Her eyes were a startling crimson-red. She turned to Felix as Letha started to laugh even louder, mouth dropping wide open.
“GET OUT!” She screamed, leaping up and body-checking him with all her force. At the same time, Jimbo and Jambo darted into the room, hopping onto Felix’s back with wide grins, like they had been planning to do this the whole time.
Letha kicked him in the crotch, chomping down on his leg. Jimbo yanked at his hair. Jambo tickled him.
Felix stumbled back a bit, still kind of shocked how these kids could go from perfectly well and behaved to completely out of control in just a blink of an eye.
“If you three don’t stop I’m going to have to tell your parents about this.” He said, finding his voice again and trying to shove Jimbo and Jambo off of his back and fight off Letha at the same time.
Jimbo and Jambo pressed both of their thumbs into his eyes, giggling.
“OW!” He screamed, doubling over in pain.
Jimbo and Jambo didn’t give him one second to recover. Using their wilderness skills from being homeless wanderers, they tied him up with rope, Letha still chomping down anywhere she could reach.
Jambo started to tie a noose.
Felix pushed the ropes away, snatching the noose from his hands and throwing it across the room. He couldn’t believe these kids.
The three of them continued to attack him, all with surprisingly good stamina. Jambo bit him with his buck teeth. Jimbo swung around on his back. Letha kicked him and stomped on his feet. The girl - one of Akali’s younger sisters, what was her name? - just stood there and watched, giggling at the scene.
“If you three don’t start to behave you’re going to be in a lot of trouble.” Felix warned, elbowing Letha away.
“‘You’re going to be in a lot of trouble.’” Jimbo repeated in a high-pitched tone, smirking.
Just then, Jimbo’s eyes landed on the person who had just joined them at the doorway: Winola. He nudged Jambo, and the two twins hopped off of Felix like nothing had even happened. “That was fun! Let’s go eat now!” They linked arms and skipped back down the stairs.
Letha followed her brothers, and Winola gave Felix a curt nod, heading back down with the kids.
Akali’s younger sister was the only one to stay back. Della. That was her name, he was sure. She lingered in her spot, watching her siblings skip down next to Winola with a look that was almost… wistful.
“Sorry for bothering you.” Felix looked at her guiltily, patting down his poor now-messed up hair.
Della opened her mouth, looking like she wanted to say something, before deciding better of it. She glanced at her feet, giving him a quick nod.
“Della, right?” He gave her a smile.
Della nodded again, slowly leading him out, still not daring to say anything. Felix took the hint and gave her a quick wave, heading back downstairs to the rest of the kids.
He found them in the kitchen, gathered around the table, eating their yogurt tubes contentedly.
Jimbo looked up towards Felix and Winola again. “So what are we doing next?”
“What do you guys like to do for fun?” Felix asked, plopping himself down in a chair.
“We like to play hide and seek!”
“And juggle!”
“And cook!”
“And dress up!”
“And go outside!”
“So which one do you want to do first?” Felix asked with a smile.
“You guys can decide.” Jimbo and Jambo chimed in unison.
Felix turned to Winola. “What do you wanna do, Winola?”
“I’m fine with whatever.” Winola shrugged.
“Then we can go outside!”
“YAY!”
The siblings jumped out of their seats, excitedly running to put their shoes on.
Once the eight of them had gotten their shoes on, with Jimbo wearing flip-flops, Jambo wearing cowboy boots, Letha in runners, Cadi in crocs, Ovia in cute baby shoes, Felix in his shiny dress shoes, and Winola in her plain red hightop converses, Felix unlocked the door, leading them all out.
“Do you want to go to the park?” Cadi asked, grabbing onto Winola’s hand.
“If you want to.” Winola replied, feeling awkward to be holding this kids hand.
Cadi grabbed Felix’s hand with her other. “What about you, Mr. Ugly?”
“Sure!” Felix grinned, ignoring the Mr. Ugly comment.
As soon as the park came into view the kids ran off, all grinning big and excitedly going to play, leaving Winola and Felix standing in silence.
“Do you remember that one guy from Alzena and my Foods class?” Winola asked, cutting through the awkward atmosphere.
Felix turned to her and raised an eyebrow. “Uh, I don’t have Foods with you guys.”
“The guy you beat up.”
“Mmmmmmmmmm…” Felix paused, racking his brain for which guy out of the many that he had gotten into a fight with this week that might have been. A memory resurfaced: Standing over a guy with a bloody face, his expression twisted up with pain as he groaned on the ground. “Oh! Yeah.” He nodded at her.
“He wants to fight you in the forest after school on Monday. You don’t have to go, I just thought I’d let you know.”
Felix grinned, his eyes twinkling with a crazed sort of light. “Oh, I’m going.”
An hour later, after the kids had finally finished playing, Felix and Winola led the siblings back to the house, walking up Akali’s gigantic driveway and swinging the door open.
Della sat on the couch with a bag of chips, watching some cartoon that Felix didn’t recognize. “Hi, Della.” He said, kicking off his shoes and following Winola along with the rest of the kids into the living room.
She looked up at them excitedly. “Hi, welcome ba-!”
As soon as she spotted Felix and Winola she paled, her expression closing off. “Um, I’m going back up.” She sprinted back up to her room without another word - or even a glance - at the rest of them, her door clicking shut quickly the only sound to be heard.
“See you later?” Felix mumbled confusedly.
“Let’s watch TV now!” The siblings cheered, all taking off their shoes and neatly putting them away before hopping onto the couch. Jambo clicked on Peppa Pig and the five of them were instantly hooked, sitting quietly and behaving.
Another hour of surprisingly peaceful silence passed, before Jimbo jumped up. “Let’s go play in the backyard!”
Felix and Winola were led to another section of Akali’s impossibly large backyard, this time containing a tennis court along with a shed and a garden.
Felix plopped himself down next to Letha as Jimbo and Jambo ran to the tennis court, grinning at each other, and Cadi and Ovia skipped off to play in the garden.
Letha hummed a cute little song, swinging her feet around. “Hey Letha?” Felix turned to her.
“Yes?” She looked up at him curiously.
“Do you know why Della acted weird when we came in?”
“Cause she’s not supposed to be out.”
Felix stared at her, puzzled. “Why?”
“Cause she’s dangerous.”
“Why is she dangerous?” Felix asked, feeling nervous now.
Letha shrugged. “Don’t know.”
“She’s not allowed out, ever?”
“No, just when we have people over.” She shook her head no and looked back up to the house. “Look she’s in the window over there!” Letha pointed up to the window, where Della was watching Jimbo and Jambo play, looking like she wanted to join them.
That was before she spotted Felix. Instantly she ducked out of view.
Felix frowned. “I think maybe we should ask her to join us.” He said, turning back to Letha. “It seems unfair that she has to stay inside all by herself.” He stood up and stretched. “Do you want to come with me Letha, or stay here?”
“Stay here.” She went back to singing her little tune.
With a quick look over his shoulder to make sure that Winola was okay with the rest of the kids, Felix left Letha sitting in the shade and headed back into the house.
He padded through the living room and up the stairs, finally coming to a stop in front of her door.
“Della?”
There was shifting behind the door, the sound of something shuffling around, before Della’s answer finally came. “Uh, yeah?”
“Um,” Felix cleared his throat, feeling very awkward all of a sudden. “Do you want to play tennis with Jimbo, Jambo and me?”
The door instantly swung open, slamming against the wall with a bang. Della stood there, face bright with excitement, crimson-red eyes lit up.
“Really?!” She exclaimed.
He nodded slowly, to which she grabbed onto his hand, practically flying down the stairs and outside, dragging him along.
They burst out the back door, and all the siblings looked up in surprise, Jimbo and Jambo abandoning their tennis game to run up to Della and Felix, with Cadi, Letha, and Ovia trailing not far behind, leaving Winola at her spot in the shade.
“I thought mom said you weren’t allowed out!”
“It’s only for a little bit!” Della said, bouncing on her toes in enthusiasm, not paying Jambo’s concerns any attention.
“But what if you get hurt?”
“I’ll be fiiine.” Della waved away Jimbo and Jambo, giving them a reassuring smile.
Felix eyed her, furrowing his eyebrows. “Hurt?” He repeated, slight worry setting in now. Akali hadn’t warned him about anything to do with Della - or any of his other siblings, for that matter. He had to admit that Della was the strangest out of the six, staying locked up in her room while her younger siblings played and roamed freely through the house, but it was nothing that concerned him. Or, nothing that had concerned him. “You’ll get hurt if you stay out here?”
“No!” Della grabbed Jimbo’s discarded tennis racket, not meeting his eyes. “Now hurry up so we can play!”
Felix picked up a racket reluctantly, giving her a look. “You’re sure?”
Della spun the racket around, nodding eagerly. Slowly, Felix stepped onto the court, grabbing a ball, a lingering sense of dread hanging in the air. “You can start.” She grinned at him, looking nothing but overjoyed to finally be out of her room and playing with her siblings.
Felix paused for a moment, hesitant. Something about this felt so… wrong. He couldn’t place what, but he had a horrible feeling about this game, about Della. He tried to push away his doubts and worries, tried to brush off the weird feeling he was getting.
It was just a game of tennis. Nothing that bad could happen with just one game.
Felix rolled his shoulders and took a deep breath, getting into stance and serving the ball in a sharp arc towards Della. She perfectly hit it back, the ball sent zipping towards him.
He smacked it towards her again, forgetting to be worried for a second and just getting lost in the game. Surprisingly, Della was an amazing tennis player. She didn’t allow the ball to fall once, spiking it back towards his side with a powerful stroke, reacting in mere milliseconds each time.
They continued to play, everyone silent, the rest of the siblings watching intently, enraptured in the game, tension tight in the air as Felix and Della shot it back and forth.
Suddenly, a sound caught Della off-guard, and she glanced away, distracted. At the same very moment, Felix spiked the ball in her direction, too wrapped up in the game to stop.
The ball hit Della square in the face.
Felix was left to watch in shock as she flew through the air, skidding across the pavement and finally landing on the cement in a heap.
She didn’t get up.
Felix’s stomach dropped to his knees. In an instant he was at her side, discarding his racket and sprinting over. “Are you okay?” He asked, face wide with panic, fear taking over.
Della didn’t respond.
She was sprawled out awkwardly, lying still on the ground, unconscious.
“Della?” He asked again, shaking her lightly this time. He pushed back her hair, and her head lolled to the side, her body completely limp.
Fortunately, her head seemed to be fine, much to Felix’s relief, her face not even scratched up from her fall.
Felix scanned the rest of her body, searching for any injuries she might have gotten. There was a small scrape, barely even noticeable, on her exposed arm. It was barely even that, not much more than a scratch. Nothing that couldn’t be fixed by a bandaid once they went back inside. He sighed with relief.
Blood started to violently seep out of it.
Felix’s eyes went big. The blood spilled down around them, pouring onto the court, despite the cut being small size.
Immediately he was ripping off his blazer, wrapping it tightly around her arm and pressing down, applying pressure to the cut.
Winola watched him silently, the kids all gathered around her, staring down at Felix and their sister in shock.
“Should we call their parents?” She asked, voice quiet.
Felix nodded, keeping the pressure on the scrape. He whipped out his phone and speed-dialled Akali.
The blood was pitch black now, soaking through his jacket. It raised into the air and waved around, slinking around him.
Akali picked up on the second dial. “Hello?”
All of Felix’s common sense went out the window. “AKALI?” He screamed into the phone, forgetting how he was supposed to stay calm in these situations, how he was supposed to be the adult here. “WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOUR SISTERS BLOOD? WHAT THE HELL DIDN’T YOU TELL ME.”
Felix could hear shuffling and movement on the other side of the line, along with hushed whispers. “What the hell happened?” Akali hissed, finally responding after the longest five seconds of his entire life.
“I don’t know!” Felix’s voice raised an octave as the black substance - which couldn’t be classified as blood anymore - continued to float higher up, completely drenching his jacket. “We were playing tennis! She got hit by the ball and fell! And her blood is moving around? Blood isn’t supposed to do that!” He screeched. “AKALI, WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH HER?”
“Move her to her room right now. And board the door underneath.” Akali’s voice came, firmly but urgently.
Felix jumped up, scooping Della into his arms and completely forgetting about the rest of the kids, abandoning them with Winola as he ran back into the house, slamming the back door behind him.
The black substance started to wrap around him, slowly tightening around his wrists, working its way up his arms.
Felix bolted up the stairs, the black spreading and covering him, squeezing around his torso. “AKALI, WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH HER.” He screamed, trying to fight it off.
“We’re on our way home. Board the door and don’t let anyone near it.”
He found his way into her room again, swinging the door shut with a bang and laying Della down as gently as he could when her blood was wrapping around him.
She did not stir.
He glanced around, desperation setting in as he tried to find something, anything, that he could use to board the door.
The black started to warp away from both Felix and Della, shaping and moving until it formed into a humanoid figure. Felix watched in absolute horror, the room fading around him, Akali’s voice suddenly sounding very faraway.
“Akali.” He whispered, voice shaking. “She’s doing your… thing.”
“My thing?”
“You know what I’m fucking talking about, Akali!” Felix’s voice cracked. He couldn’t move from his spot on the floor, Della laid down next to him, the shadowy creature looming over them, glaring at him with unblinking hollow eyes.
It was fully separate from Della and Felix now, standing at about five feet tall, its figure distorting, dark smoke flickering around it, seeming to bend and shape the air around them, like it was sucking all the darkness in, the temperature dripping rapidly.
“Who are you?” It opened its mouth, voice crackling as it stared right into Felix’s eyes.
Felix screamed, frozen in terror.
“I said, who are you?” It repeated, approaching closer to him, its voice lowering dangerously.
“Felix.” Felix said, but the word was barely even a whisper, more like a squeak. Every muscle in his body was screaming at him to run, to hide, yet he found himself trapped under the gaze of the shadow monster, stuck in place.
“I don’t recognize you.” It stepped away now, raising a smoky hand.
“I’m Akali’s friend.” Felix was shaking all over, completely petrified.
“No,” It tilted its head, the darkness around it started to whip around, wind blowing Felix’s hair back. “Akali’s friend is Bliss. Not Felix.”
“We’re friends.” Felix said, but it came out like a question, his voice incredibly small.
“Goodbye.” Its palm started to inverse. The wind picked up, slicing at his face and skin, darkness surrounding him in nothing but black. Della wasn’t visible anymore. Felix felt a tugging sensation, like he was being pulled in by his very core. A black hole ripped open through the air.
“GET THE FUCK AWAY!” Akali screamed from the phone speaker.
Felix scrambled into a portal, landing on the other side of the room. The wind was too disorienting, pitch black shadows forming all around him, blood rushing in his ears. The creature swiped its palm at him, a dark orb shooting out, aimed straight for his head.
He ducked, landing in a roll a few feet away. The orb exploded, the air around it twisting and warping before being sucked in.
Somehow Winola had found her way upstairs. She was standing at the door, almost being picked up by the wind, struggling to back away, slowly getting dragged into the creature’s palm. The kids were nowhere to be seen.
Felix sprinted towards her, shoving her through a portal, the both of them landing in a pile back downstairs.
The creature was already behind them.
“Where are the kids?” It asked, dark void eyes staring at the back door.
“I’LL KILL YOU!” Felix screamed, portalling in between it and the door, knowing he’d rather die than let it go near the rest of Akali’s siblings.
“Kill…. Me…?” It stopped, the air turning ten times colder, sending shivers down Felix’s back. All the hairs on his neck stood straight up.
“Kill me…?” It repeated, the wind picking up again, shaking the house, blowing the furniture into the walls. The middle of its body twisted, contorting into an endless black hole. “Kill Della…?”
“LEAVE HER ALONE!”
“YOU leave her alone.” It raised its fists, the ground sinking underneath him, disintegrating to nothing but shadow, his shoes engulfed by black smoke.
“I NEVER EVEN BOTHERED HER!” Felix tried to back away, all to no avail, the wind tugging him towards the monster.
“YOU hurt her.” The wall behind it cracked, forming into another black hole. Felix felt the breath get sucked from his lungs. He fell down, desperately trying to claw away from the creature.
“I NEVER TOUCHED HER. I SWEAR.”
“You’re a liar.”
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”
He found that staring into its gaping black eyes, its face deadly calm, nothing but shadows, looking at him with pure hatred, he couldn’t lie. He couldn’t pretend. “It was an accident. I promise.” He pleaded.
The wall behind Felix and Winola transformed, and Felix could feel himself being torn apart. He screamed, electric pain lighting up his entire body. The roof collapsed, nothing but a swirling back hole, and Felix was sure his head was going to be crushed, sure that the pressure was going to snap his neck. He started to spin, pulled from each side, the shadows from the monster consuming his very being.
But, in the midst of his agonizing spinning, he heard chirping, coming from nearby.
A small black bird appeared, unbothered by the black holes, flying around both Felix and Winola, singing a tune. He screamed louder. It pecked his ear and chirped.
Suddenly everything went dark.
THE FINAL GIRL
you're very tired, aren't you? thrashing and fighting and trying to survive– it has taken its toll, but that has not stopped you. you'll continue to gnaw and scream and bare teeth until you can free yourself from this mess, even if it means being the last one left. there is rest at the end of this hard battle, i promise you. there is a time when the fight will be over– but fighting is all you know, isn't it?
Tumblr media
THE KILLER
was there ever a choice? maybe, but that fork in the road is far, far behind you. you surround yourself now with sharp things, tools to harm, and they have become your only family. you are the thing that goes bump in the night, and you hunt for scurrying mice like a hungry cat. maybe, just maybe, though, one can finally put an end to your hunt, and allow you to finally rest.
Tumblr media
THE ANCIENT EVIL
they have wronged you. perhaps, once, you were something powerful– something to be looked at with adoration and worship and fear. but time does not yield to you, and when you lay to sleep, you awake to find yourself forgotten. your rage is insatiable. no matter what, you will make sure they do not forget this time.
Tumblr media
THE GHOST
death is not the end for everyone. it certainly was not the end for you. something within you tethers you here, like a heavy chain, and keeps you from well-deserved rest. love, rage, hunger, fear– do you even remember what it was? you wander here, awake, and your body lies below, asleep. maybe someone will find your disturbed grave and grant you a proper ending.
Howdy hey @pheedraws , I'm your bloody valentine for this year's event held by @carlosoliveiraa !!
I had a really fun time learning about Ilona and her tense history with the rest of the family, but especially that with Heisenberg. I hope I managed to capture their push-and-pull kinda dynamic, and I hope you enjoy this! <3
Let me know if you'd like a more permanent copy of this, too! I'm always happy to provide a PDF version of the writings I do :3
Under the cut for length! (this ended up being almost 2k words hehe)
The coldest of the winter months had finally approached, thickened blankets of snow encapsulating the quaint village and its surrounding wilderness. Winds howled through the distant trees, sinking low into the narrow pathways between buildings, carrying a flurry of snow with it. Crystalline sculptures shimmered in the sun's overcast light as they fell, drawing attention to the way they'd gathered in a nearly blinding landscape. Dark stonework was accentuated by the vibrant snow, just as the flourishing pine needles were. Gnawing as the chill that lingered in the air was, there was, too, an odd comfort to its overwhelming presence. A comfort that, as the sun eventually began to settle behind the horizon and the village began to grow quiet, encouraged a few intriguing residents to take in the stillness of it all. To wander through the sparse lantern glows and out into the moonlit wilderness, abandoning the set paths for something more organic; less explored. Distant lycan howls set the boundary for it all, warnings of what may happen if one were to straggle too far away from the epicenter.
Yet even that comfort did not explain how, or why, Ilona found herself in the fields adjacent to the run-down, albeit functioning, factory on the village's outskirts.
There was no comfort in the metallic whirs and groans. No comfort in the prospect that, should fate decide to be a particularly cruel mistress, Ilona run into the factory's owner—or one of his creations. It was still up for debate which would have been worse, frankly. The hostility of the mechanical beings was simple in its nature. Programming kicking in as rusted mechanisms sputtered to life. A mere reflection of their created purpose: Defense. Lord Heisenberg's hostilities, on the other hand, were bred of arrogance. Full of malcontent. It was intentionally designed to get under the skin of whatever poor soul ended up on the other side of that wolfish grin. Yet that, too, proposed another discussion of whether it would have been better to be maimed physically, or walk away with a wounded ego. Regardless, the answer was lost as well-placed speakers crackled to life. As that grating, smug voice rang out across the field.
"Well well, what do we have here? A late night visitor, all the way from her mighty home in the comforts of the village. And what do I owe the pleasure?"
Dark eyes narrowed. "You don't. I was just leaving."
"Is that so? I don't know, might be dangerous to head back so late. Heard there's lycans about." The fact was spoken as if it were a rumor, words shadowed by a low purr resonating from the man's chest as he teased. It earned nothing more than a scoff and the roll of the woman's eyes, back turning to the building as she began to make her way down the field.
That was, until a series of rustling in the treeline created a pause. Brought Ilona to a stop as her annoyance only grew. There was no proof of it, and it was something so unlikely to consider, yet she couldn't help but clench her jaw at the prospect that—by some account—Karl had set something up to lure them. Or was it so simply as him setting up his fancy little radio, and daring to open that mouth of his? Whatever it was, two paths lay before her: Take her chances and throw herself to the 'wolves', or begrudgingly wait out the pack's hunt in that cursed factory. While the first option was infinitely more tempting, there was a weariness beginning to weigh on her shoulders. The biting cold that began to properly creep under the layers of cloth and tug at her skin; it was enough for her to begrudgingly turn herself back up the path. And hearing the static of the speakers was enough for Ilona to almost consider turning back once more. Instead, she simply glared to the closest one, sat upon the corner of the decrepit brick.
"Don't even. Just shut up and open the door already."
And, as instructed, the rustled mechanisms groaned as the factory's doors slid open, allowing the warm air from within to bleed out across the shrinking distance. Allow the whines and creaks to overwhelm the immediate landscape alongside it, subtly encouraging a quickness in the woman's steps. The lycans had heard it, too. Paused their consumptions to perk their heads toward the sound, feral eyes fixated in wait. Yet no meal came to them, and they'd simply returned to the chilled leftover at their claws' end as Ilona found herself walking right into the hands of her…
Adversary? Acquaintance? Whatever it was Heisenberg was today. And, based on the way he'd sauntered out of the distant shadows, allowing the dim light in the entry to illuminate him, it was leaning toward the former.
The brim of his worn hat concealed his features from the light, yet there was a subtle sort of glow to those fixated eyes of his. A near-clear view of the wolfish grin that stretched his skin and scrunched his nose.
"I would ask what pleasure I owed, but something…" his voice trails as he steps closer, leering at Ilona, "Something tells me it would be a wasted attempt at conversation. What could possibly have your petals so ruffled, buttercup?"
He knew. She knew that he knew. And yet, he pressed. Instigated. Ilona sighed and waved off the idea of giving him fuel. Of airing her grievances. 'It's because I'm stuck here. With you of all people.'
"It's not important, Karl." But there was no harm in a little nudge. A subtle jab that would get just far enough under his skin to keep things calm enough for the time being. Just far enough to cause his lips to curl and teeth to bare. Still, he did well to conceal the bitter feeling at being referred to so… personally.
"Oh, I'm sure it isn't. Surely it's nothing, if that pout of yours is anything to judge by. Or the little furrow of your brows." It seems he, too, is returning the nudge. Both in the metaphorical sense, and in the literal, especially as a gloved finger comes to roughly jab at Ilona's shoulder before he draws back.
It brings a more prominent scowl to the woman's features as she sighs, head shaking as she looks around for something—anything—else to preoccupy herself with amidst the mess. Piles of unsorted scrap are all that await her, and the prospect of scraping her hands against the rough metal isn't exactly appealing. So, instead, she simply pretends Heisenberg isn't there. Walks past him to, with some hesitation etching into her muscles, find a different area to plant herself in. Perhaps somewhere with a piece of proper furniture. With something less grimy to entertain her as the moon traverses the night sky and leads the sun along with it. It'd be too much to ask for a corner of the factory without Heisenberg, or his influence, especially as he trails along behind her, but at this point taking her chances with (another) Soldat would be preferable to the grating voice and smug laughter. Thankfully for both of them, much as neither would admit it, it doesn't come to that. Rather, through some rather subtle corralling on Heisenberg's part, the duo has found themselves in his personal alcove. Amidst the messy workbenches, scattered papers, and a rather intriguing wall of connections between the ragtag group. Red strings illuminating the relationships between their fucked up little family. Stiffened pieces of scrap that appear to have been thrown, and with quite some force, to decorate the spaces around Miranda's portrait. And, amidst the others, a smaller portrait of hers. A recognition that she was, willingly or otherwise, an important part of the dynamic. One that sat unmarked, highlighted by an uncertain air.
Friend, or foe? Ally, or enemy? To spare, or to tear down with the rest of them all? In a way, there was almost reassurance in that hesitation exhibited by Heisenberg. Something about the fact these waxing and waning feelings were, in a way, mutual. An intriguing series of questions echoed in her head as she'd stepped over to unpin her visage from the board. To allow her fingers to trace the weathered edges of the film as the candlelight found them. Heisenberg watched, biting his tongue for once and simply opting to bring himself back to organizing the remnants of his current project.
"So you do like me?" A tease, highlighted with an essence of genuine curiosity.
"Alive, perhaps. Jury's still out on if it goes any further, or if that's where the answer stays." Too, a tease, though there was a lingering bitterness in his voice. A seriousness that betrayed him. As it stood, he had no idea whose side she would fall on. And, albeit deep, deep down, that lack of clarity made him uneasy. Still, he did well to mask it, turning to lean with his back against the workbench, wrench twirling between gloved fingers. "For now, I suppose I could say yes."
Ilona's arms fold across her chest. "It never is quite a straight answer with you, is it?"
"Of course not. How else do you expect I keep everyone on their toes?" That wolfish grin of his spreads across his features once more, his own arms mimicking the movement of hers. "Especially now. With so many hours to kill. You wouldn't want things to be boring, would you?"
"I'd almost prefer it." Still, there's a subtle shift in her tone that betrays the minute enjoyment she receives from their bickering. A hint of potential for missing it, should things lead them astray from one another's path. "Fine, keep me on my toes all you'd like. Just don't be surprised if it grows tired. After all, not everyone is as devoid of basic manners as you are."
"So you've said, and so I continue to ignore."
Neither would expect any less from him. From one another. And as the hours passed, it remained just as so. Ilona attempting to mind her business while perusing the various work-in-progress projects scattered about. Karl finding himself particularly itchy with the urge to bother her, remind her how unfortunate the circumstances were to be stuck within his domain. A few back and forths. A few nudges and prods. Little things that ultimately left the two ever envigorated as the sun rose and the woodlands cleared, allowing for Ilona to return herself to the Village.
And for once, the two had parted on fairly decent terms. How long that lasted, only time would tell.
*While walking through the woods for a mission, you see your demon friend Milo eating a deer. That’s one of the things you (platonically) love about her, she never eats humans. She doesn’t notice you cause she’s enjoying her meal*
*Ilona noticed her friend and went up to her just to say hi*
"Hello Milo. How are you doing, friend?"
Before Felix knew it, over two months had flown by in Paradise.
For the first time in what seemed like forever, he was genuinely happy again. He had slowly fell into the routine of day-to-day life, and by now it was almost easy to forget about Chumps Jr., or the concert. Everything in his life had finally settled down. He really understood now why this was called “Paradise” in the first place.
Training with the Top Five was incredible. It was probably the highlight of his day, meeting up with Hiraya as the two of them fought and sparred with each other, refining their physical abilities. He had even learned a new skill: “Portal Mutilation”, as the two of them had named it. (Although he wasn’t very good at it yet and almost passed out every time he tried to use it.) He even felt like his and Hiraya’s friendship might actually become something more, as the two of them grew closer and closer. He couldn’t wait to see the look on Akali’s face when he finally took her out on a date. He was sure it’d be priceless.
His fights in the arena had been improving too. For about a month or so, he had been quickly rising in rank, defeating each opponent that crossed his path with ease. It felt good to be finally good at something again - and it felt even better to see the large cash prizes that he was getting off each fight.
Paradise had almost started to feel like home. He wrote to Reagan every day, and sometimes he could almost pretend that she was here with him. The Board Game Club had even started to have frequent meetings at the Mansion, laughing and playing board games as they sat in January’s impossibly large room. It was everything he could have ever wanted. Paradise really seemed like it would be the place that he could spend the rest of his life, perfectly happy and content, surrounded by his best friends.
Today, however, was a special day in Paradise. Today, May twentieth, was the day that the people called “The Day of New Waves”. Everyone was in a bustling mood, all preparing for the huge party that was supposed to be happening at the Lim Residency later.
Felix couldn’t wait. He got ready excitedly, pulling on the most lavish suit he owned, making sure his makeup looked perfect, and styling his hair into a fancy up-do.
By the time he had finished with everything, it was already time to start heading down to the Mansion.
“Hi Felix!” As he started his walk to the Lim Residency, in high spirits, like usual, he heard someone call out his name.
It was Hiraya, looking drop-dead gorgeous in her party attire (though he couldn’t remember a time when she hadn’t looked stunningly beautiful). He smiled and waved to her. “Hi!”
“Excited?” She asked, coming to walk right beside him. Felix wondered if this day could get any better.
“Mhm!” He grinned. “You?”
“Mhm,” She hummed, pulling at the sleeve of her dress.
“You look nice.”
She smiled. “Thanks. You do too.”
The two of them continued to walk, eventually reaching the huge ebony-black gates of the Mansion. Felix let Hiraya walk in first, the two of them trailing down the expansive halls and entering the ballroom, where they were greeted by hundreds of happy people talking and laughing with each other. The party was already in full-swing.
“Felix!” January called him, sidling up next to the two of them, dressed in what must’ve been the most expensive suit to exist.
“Hi Hiraya!”
“Hi January!”
“You look nice.”
“You do too.” She gave him a grin.
“Well, I’m gonna go meet with the rest of the Top Five, see you guys around!” She smiled before disappearing into the crowd.
January turned to Felix with a knowing smirk. “Woah, did you two come here together?”
“Yeah.” Felix grinned back.
“Maybe you can ask her on a date soon!”
January led him over towards the rest of the Board Game Club. “I’m back with Felix!”
“Hey, y’know what this whole ‘Day of New Waves’ thing is about?” Rory asked, turning to him.
“I’m not too sure, but it is my dad’s birthday today.”
“Guess we’ll figure out sooner or later.” She shrugged.
“Oh look, there’s Astley!”
It was hard to miss him with his tall figure weaving through the crowd, his bright raspberry-pink streak of hair making him stand out even more. He emerged from the wave of people, Nyssa popping up from behind him. “You guys look nice!” January said, taking in Astley’s nice formal suit and Nyssa’s dress.
He looked around. “Have any of you guys seen Akali?”
“He might be with his family.” Alzena said as everyone shook their heads.
“Oh well, he’ll meet up with us eventually!”
The next few hours passed by quickly, the ten of them contentedly chatting and walking around, meeting with all the guests.
Suddenly, the lights dimmed down and a spotlight was shined on the balcony. Vincent stood in the middle of it, the rest of the unit leaders in a row behind him. “Good evening everyone. I’m glad that you could all join us for this very special day.” He smiled and everyone clapped. “Today on the Day of New Waves we celebrate the birth of my dear friend Howard Restall.” The crowd erupted into a chorus of boos, which made Vincent’s smile grow. “But today, we also celebrate the day that will become his anniversary with death.”
“Soon I will be off to kill Howard Restall.” Vincent grinned and the whole crowd listened in anticipation, hanging onto his every word. “But I cannot do it alone. As a society we rely on each other, and tonight I rely on all of you here. As you may know, Howard Restall has many highly guarded warehouses. Once I kill him tonight, they will send out all those vaccines without a second thought.”
“Get rid of the vaccines, the warehouses, the guards! I want to see ALL OF THEM go down in flames tonight!” His grin widened and everyone cheered loudly. Felix smiled; this day could get better. He couldn’t believe his ears. It was finally going to be over. Howard Restall would soon be gone. He was getting everything he ever wished for.
“But this is just the beginning, our waves will crash and consume all of society. We will make the whole world OUR DIOLE-ONLY SOCIETY. OUR PARADISE.” The cheers from the crowd grew even louder and became more erratic. Felix could feel people pushing and shoving, yelling in excitement. “For fifty-four years they’ve divided us and forced us to hide. But tonight, we reform their puny society into something GREATER!”
Felix stopped cheering.
“Guys what the fuck is going on?” Alzena hissed to the rest of them. Felix turned to January in horror, thinking that if anyone could’ve known about Vincent’s plan it would’ve been his cousin. January didn’t even acknowledge him, his eyes locked onto Vincent with a look of shock.
“LET’S KILL ALL HUMANS! THEY WANT TO SEPARATE US? SO BE IT. THEY’LL BE THE ONES TO DISAPPEAR.” The crowd went crazy, yelling and shouting and pushing at each other. Vincent grinned even wider than before, his purple eyes twinkling with this crazed light that Felix remembered very clearly from the Winter Concert. He looked exactly like Gunther.
“He’s fucking crazy.” He whispered under his breath, his smile gone.
“Haven will dispatch you at different places in exactly two hours, when the clock strikes seven.” Vincent continued, and Haven stepped forward from her spot in the back, looking around and waving. “Once the warehouses are taken down, they will open a door and bring you all back to Paradise.”
“Everyone, enjoy the rest of your time here! This is the last day Paradise will ever be this small.”
“One more thing to add.” Haven grabbed the mic from Vincent. “If you don’t plan to co-operate with tonight’s plan, you better start running now.” She smiled and it sent a chill down Felix’s back.
“Thank you everyone and enjoy your night.” The spotlight turned off and the lights switched back to normal, the crowd bursting into applause.
“We have to get out of here.” Maddox mumbled as soon as Haven and Vincent disappeared from view, making his way through the crowd and leading the rest of the Board Game Club away from the party, which was now two times as loud and rowdy.
“We gotta find Akali.” Felix said, glancing around wildly for the familiar head of dark blue hair.
“You find him, we’ll wait in the hall.” Alzena told him, still following behind Maddox.
Felix turned and pushed through the crowd, trying to make his way through the swarm of bodies, as he instantly realized, just like his first time here, that it was very hard to find anyone in a crowd of people this large. It was even harder with how wild Vincent’s speech had made everyone. And even worse - his portals had stopped working. Again. Not at a worse time.
But he wouldn’t leave someone behind. Not again. Determined, he pushed past the happily chattering people, ignoring the weird looks they were giving him and searching desperately for his best friend.
“Felix!”
Felix whipped around, seeing Akali hurriedly weaving through the crowd towards him, Ensio, Ilona and Della right behind him.
“We have to get outta here. Right now.” Felix whispered.
“Where are the others?” Akali looked around.
“In the hall, waiting for us.” He replied, leading Akali and his family out into the hall as fast as he could.
“Let’s follow that crowd.” Maddox said as they met up with the rest of the group, pointing towards other people that were rushing out the door.
“Where ya guys going?” A familiar voice popped up beside them. Una. He ran ahead of them with a grin. “You gonna leave too?”
“Are you leaving?” Felix retorted defensively. He wasn’t sure who he could trust, if Haven was going to send out the Top Five to deal with the unwilling citizens. One thing he knew for certain is that Una could easily pulverize the whole Board Game Club with ease. He prayed that they weren’t crazy like Mr. Lim.
“Yup, I just gotta wait for my buddies before I go.” Una said, seeming not so stressed about the whole ‘kill all humans’ thing. He was somehow his usual chipper self, smiling at them without any worries.
“You know how to get out of here?”
“You gotta run to the edge of Paradise, but I don’t exactly know the way there.” Una said. “Reese knows the way though!”
“Aren’t they with Mr. Lim?”
“Nope, they took off as soon as he finished his little speech. I’m sure they’ll be here any minute now!” They stopped at the doorway.
The next couple minutes felt like hours as they waited for Reese to show up. The doors swung open and shut as more and more people left in a hurry, the sounds of the citizens enjoying the party still loud in the background.
Felix looked to January again, realizing that he had been unusually quiet since Vincent’s big announcement. He stood there silently, staring out into the void. His eyes weren’t shining like they normally did. He didn’t seem to notice Felix staring, or Maddox anxiously glancing around for Reese. He didn’t seem to notice anyone. His posture was slightly slouched over, his expression completely unreadable. It was like he wasn’t even really there.
With a pang, Felix realized exactly when he had seen that look last. Chumps Jr.
“Una!” A voice caught his attention, and he looked up, momentarily forgetting to worry about January. It was Reese, followed by Shehani. “Are you ready to go?”
“Mhm, these guys are all coming with!”
“Okay, then let’s go.” Reese ran out the door and everyone followed.
Well, mostly everyone.
Maddox tugged on January’s arm. “Hey, c’mon, we have to go.”
January blinked, like he was just seeing Maddox. He pushed his hand away, taking a step back. “Do you think he’s right?” It came out just below a whisper.
Felix stopped, hesitating at the doorway. “What are you talking about?”
“Ever since coming to Paradise our lives have been so much better… do we really want to go back?” January took another step back, even further away from the door.
“Didn’t you hear him? He’s going to kill all humans. He’s just trying to replace your dad.”
“Those humans KILLED AVIL.” He snapped.
It went dead silent.
“Are you listening to yourself?!” Felix shot back, staring at January incredulously. “You want to wipe out thousands upon thousands of innocents just because some of them are murderers?”
“Shut up Felix. Like you weren’t first cheering at the news.” January’s voice hardened, his eyes narrowing. It was a look Felix hadn’t seen in a long time.
“Yeah, maybe when he said we were taking down warehouses. Not every single human to exist.”
“January please, let’s just go, you don’t know what you’re saying.” Maddox kept stepping closer to January, reaching out for him with a look of complete desperation.
“I don’t want to live in a society where they kill my friends on the daily. I don’t want to live the rest of my life hiding in fear.” January’s words became more venomous and his aura flickered, growing more dangerous than before.
“What about Adelio? Wasn’t he your friend?” Felix narrowed his eyes right back at January, clenching his fists, uncontrollable anger bubbling up to the surface. “You’re acting like an idiot. You really think wiping out every human is going to fix things?”
“If you want to call me an idiot then go ahead and leave already.” He looked at them, his pupils shrinking as he took larger and larger steps back.
“I’m-“ He took a deep breath, pausing to calm his shaking voice. “I’m staying here.”
Felix stared at him speechlessly. He couldn’t believe that January was saying this. January, who had been by his side from the very beginning. January, who had promised Felix from the start that he’d protect him. January, who couldn’t be seen without a smile on his face. January, who saw the good in everyone, even Felix when he did nothing but scream and throw insults. January, who was kind. January, who was his friend. No, not just that, but January, who was one of the only people Felix had left.
“January, we’re your friends. We care about you, just please, come with us. We can talk once we get out of here!” Maddox pleaded, grabbing onto January’s hand desperately, his eyes wide and shiny. But it didn’t shake him.
“If you’re really my friends then you’ll respect my decision.” January paused, his multicoloured eyes flickering dangerously, scanning between each of them, before he turned his back and slowly started to walk away. Felix felt frozen in time, standing there watching him. It was as if everything was playing in slow motion.
“Well, gotta go follow my leader.” Rory began to walk towards him. “It was nice while it lasted, guys. Get out of here safely.” She turned around slightly, giving them a bittersweet smile before waving and following January. Kuali’i didn’t even spare the rest of them a glance as he left, right behind them.
The atmosphere around them suddenly started to get hotter, the sound of flames crackling to life disturbing the silence. “YOU FUCKING BITCHES!” Wilder stepped forward, pushing in between Maddox and Felix and screaming after the three of them. His fingers twitched, and small but violent eruptions of flames emerged from his palms, white hot. “AVIL DIED TRYING TO PROTECT EVERYONE THAT DAY, NOT JUST US. DON’T USE HER AS AN EXCUSE FOR YOUR ACTIONS.” His face was contorted with fury, eyes bright with pure rage, as the flames started to multiply, forming at his feet, growing in height. For a second Felix could see the Wilder he knew five months ago, not the sullen and quiet boy that had replaced him.
“AVIL PROTECTED THEM AND WHAT’D THEY DO? THEY KILLED HER. SHE SAVED THEM AND GOT A BULLET TO THE HEAD AS A REWARD.” January yelled back, whipping around. “THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT US. GUNTHER WAS RIGHT. THEY ONLY SEE US AS MONSTERS.” Despite the way he was screaming, louder and more aggressive than Felix had ever heard before, January looked just as confused and hurt as the rest of them.
“SHE DIED TRYING TO SAVE YOUR SORRY EXCUSE OF A LEADER!” Wilder screamed.
“WELL I’M NOT YOUR LEADER ANYMORE.” January ripped his bracelet off his wrist and whipped it at the ground in front of them. The string snapped, and the pale blue beads spilled everywhere, sliding across the floor. Felix watched as January’s specially made charm - the ace - shattered into a million pieces.
The hall went absolutely silent. The flames around Wilder started to grow even hotter, blazing up around his body, flickering angrily.
“Guys we need to go. Now.” Akali said, grabbing Wilder’s wrist.
January turned around again. And this time, he didn’t look back.
Una led them outside, looking around and trying to remember the path that Reese and Shehani went, considering they were long gone now. He followed along the path of blood spots on the ground, quickly turning to glance back at them. “Be careful guys, as soon as we leave the estate is when the monsters come out!” He warned them. “So all of you be sure this is what you want. There’s no coming back.”
Maddox looked back at the mansion longingly, like there was nothing he wanted more than to be by January’s side, but he didn’t turn back.
As soon as they left through the Mansion’s gates, the same eerie feeling that fell along Paradise at night surrounded them. “Look, there they are!” Una pointed towards the distance.
It was hard to make out exactly what they were looking at. The creatures in the distance were large and disfigured, with these horrifyingly wide, pitch-black eyes that watched Felix’s every move. They walked very slowly towards them, never once looking away.
“Be careful, they can run too!” As soon as Una said that the monsters started sprinting, faster than should’ve been possible with their massive and bulky size. Una started running faster, him and Nyssa easily outpacing everyone.
Felix tried to open up a portal, but it still wouldn’t work. “Shit.” He mumbled under his breath, starting to pick up speed and sprinting as fast as his legs would allow.
“CoMe hErE!” The monsters screamed in a distorted, high-pitched tone, running even faster. They extended a misshapen arm, swiping at the slowest of their group.
Winola.
They snatched her up before any of them could react, their long twisted fingers closing around her body, trapping her.
Una’s body made a crackling noise as a clone splintered away, running at the monster. It leapt into the air, kicking the monster’s hand and sending Winola flying out. Winola fell on the ground roughly, rolling through the dirt with a grunt as her ankle twisted in an odd angle.
More clones separated from Una, running to deal with the monsters. One scooped up Winola, who was trailing behind even more than before with her injured ankle. The rest all started to fight, slowing the monsters down bit by bit.
They sprinted for another thirty minutes.
“Shehani!” Una perked up, spotting his two buddies up ahead. When Shehani saw him she let out a little sigh of relief. “You saw the trail?”
“Mhm!” Una smiled.
Una and Shehani continued to take out more of the monsters as the group kept running, Reese leading them in the front. The more that they ran, the more dead bodies they could see scattered around, surrounded by pools of dark blood. Some were missing limbs, others contorted in ways so horrific that Felix couldn’t make himself look. He focused in on running, not allowing his mind to drift any further. They just had to get out of here. That’s all that mattered now.
He just had to get out of here.
“Oh look, someone over there isn’t dead! Let’s go get them!” Una said, pointing to a person in the distance. Felix looked over, and for a second, time stopped.
Paisley.
They stood in front of a pile of monsters, their back turned to him, but it was definitely her. His hair wasn’t the purple that it had been the last time he had seen them, instead a gentle blue, but Felix would’ve recognized her anywhere.
“PAISLEY!” He screamed, loud enough that it could have been heard back at the Mansion. He shoved past Akali and Una, forgetting about January, about Rory, about the monsters that were swarming them. Forgetting about what they were fleeing from. Nothing else in the world mattered to him at that moment, all except that she was okay. That she was alive.
He tackled her in a hug from behind, grinning from ear to ear.
Paisley didn’t turn to face him. They stood there for a second before elbowing him harshly. “Get off of me.”
Felix’s smile started to fade. “Huh?”
“You have someplace to be. Hurry up and go.” They turned around to look at him for the first time in five months, but when they stared down at Felix, it wasn’t their familiar look of gentle kindness that he had come to expect. Instead, he stared at him like he was nothing but a bug. Nothing but an annoyance.
“Paisley?”
“Didn’t you hear me?” He started walking away.
This was all wrong. This was all wrong.
This wasn’t supposed to happen. Paisley was supposed to hug him back. She was supposed to hug him back and smile. And then Felix would apologize a million times over. He’d tell her everything, starting from all the way back in September, starting from his very first gym class. And Paisley was going to cup his face, her hands rough against his cheeks, and give him this look that meant “it’s okay”.
And he would knew it would be. He would knew it would be. Because it was Paisley, and as long as he had her and Reagan then everything would end up fine.
Everything was going to be fine.
“Paisley, wait!” He grabbed his arm, tears welling up in his eyes. “I’m so, so sorry. Please don’t be mad. I’ve missed you so much. I’m sorry I lied, I promise I’ll explain everything as soon as we get out of here.”
“I told you to get off!” Paisley snarled. He punched Felix, sending him to the ground.
Felix looked up at her in shock. “Paisley please, I just wanna go home. Please don’t go.” His voice cracked.
“I’m no longer a part of your home, so don’t make it sound like I’m going there with you.” Her dark eyes swirled, the gray contrasting against the black. Her gaze made him feel so incredibly small. No one had ever looked at him like he was such a disappointment, like he was so… insignificant. But especially not Paisley. He was sure this had to be an imposter. This couldn’t actually be her standing in front of him, because Paisley would never say that. Paisley would never look at him like that.
It couldn’t be her. It couldn’t be her.
“You are! You are.” Felix shakily got to his feet again, looking at her desperately and reaching out with trembling hands. “I’m so sorry. I’ll fix things, I promise. I was just trying to protect you.”
They slapped him, their jewelry raking across his face. His mouth was filled with a metallic taste, which was oh so familiar, but never from Paisley. Never from Paisley. He reached up to touch his burning cheek, looking at them with wide eyes. “You’re nothing but a burden.” They spat. “You always have been and always will be.”
She punched him in the face again, just as hard, if not harder, than the first time. But the calmness in her voice stayed unwavering. “You’re always making sorry excuses and promises you can’t keep.”
“I’m sorry.” Tears slipped down Felix’s cheeks, hot and salty. His chin wouldn’t stop trembling. “I’m so sorry, I promise I’ll be better. I can- I can control my powers now. Just let me fix things.” His voice didn’t sound right. It was whiny and shaking, as much as he tried to force it not to be. He swallowed hard, trying to push down the lump in his throat, trying to look up at Paisley, trying to make her see that he was sorry. He was so, so, sorry.
They grabbed Felix by a clump of his hair, pulling him up to his feet again so that his face was only inches away from theirs. “There’s nothing to fix, we aren’t family anymore.” He said in a low voice, staring at him with a hollow gaze. His eyes burned with a pure hatred that shouldn’t have been there - not on Paisley - as she punched him to the ground again.
Felix choked out a broken sob. “Please, I’m so sorry. Please don’t leave me. You’re all I have left.”
She kicked Felix on the ground, the heel of her boot connecting with his stomach harshly, making him cough and gag. “I don’t know why your sister wasted her life for someone as pathetic as you.”
“I’m sorry, please, don’t go. I’m so, so sorry.” Felix stared at her pleadingly. She had been the only person he could think about for over two months. The one person that he had searched endlessly to see. He would’ve given anything to know that she was okay, to have her at his side again. He would have given anything. He couldn’t even recall the amount of times he’d asked Haven about her, just begging to hear about them. And now here they were, standing before him, alive.
And all they could do is stare at him like he was the last person they would ever want to see. Like he was the root of all their problems.
Like he wasn’t their son.
“I don’t know why I stuck around all those years. I wish I never signed those papers.” She said coldly. She gave him another well-placed kick, this time in the face, and his nose started to gush blood, his face stinging all over in pain.
“I love you. I love you.” Felix sobbed harder. “Please forgive me. We can just go home. I just want to go home. I want to go home.”
“There’s no home for us to go to together.” Paisley kicked him more violently than before, no longer holding back. Little bursts of pain shot up his body for every time her foot came back down, but he couldn’t make himself move. He couldn’t make himself do anything other than stare at her, silently begging for her to please, understand. Begging for her to just take him home. Just take me home.
“There is, there is. Please don’t say that.” He begged. “Please.”
Paisley delivered one final kick, a million times rougher than the past ones, before squatting down and yanking Felix’s hair, forcing him to look in her eyes. “We’re no longer family. You’re nothing but a stranger to me.” They shoved his head into the ground, hard enough to make his ears ring. Felix sobbed harder, wretching and coughing as she forced him down.
Slowly, she stood back up, keeping their harsh gaze on Felix’s curled up and shaking body for a second longer. He could feel their eyes sweeping over him, filled with nothing but loathing and disgust. She turned her back to him, stepping over his sprawled out limbs, and began to walk away. She didn’t respond to his cries, to his begging, to his pleading apologies, simply leaving him to sob on the ground. Alone.
And this time, they didn’t look back.
Someone leaned down next to him, rubbing small circles on his back. Felix sobbed harder, not daring to look in their direction, all while knowing exactly who it was. “Let’s get back to the others.” Una said, picking him up with ease. His voice was uncharacteristically soft and almost awkward.
Una took him to the others, quickly catching up to them almost effortlessly. Felix buried his face into their shoulder, sobbing broken-heartedly. He could feel Akali’s gaze, looking between him and the Una clone, probably wondering what the hell had happened in the ten minutes that they had been gone. Felix didn’t look up. Couldn’t stand to look up. He pressed himself as closely to Una as he could, like maybe if he made himself small enough, he could disappear. Maybe he could make it all just disappear.
The group continued to run for what seemed like forever. They weaved through the streets, speeding past the once-lively parks and shops, which now were now unfamiliar to everyone, empty and dark, littered by bloody corpses. They passed by the Entertainment hall, the Arena, passed by rows and rows of hotels. But finally, Reese stopped.
“We’re here.”
It was a seemingly normal area, no different from the rest of Paradise. The buildings, the ground, the nature, the sky - none of it gave any indication that this was the way out. Reese ran their hand along the side of the building, feeling along the bricks and thinking for a second, before looking towards the rest of the group. Their eyes landed on Felix, still curled up crying in Una’s arms.
Slowly, they walked towards him, reaching out and softly touching his shoulder. “Hey, Felix, I need you to do us a little favour.” Their voice was calm and soothing, unlike its usual monotone pitch. Felix looked up, his crying dying down, just slightly. “I don’t know exactly how to rip out of this dimension, but I do know your portals will work here.”
Hesitantly, he got to his feet again. “I don’t know where to go.” He said, voice barely above a whisper as he tried to blink back the tears that stubbornly kept falling.
“You can open a portal anywhere, right?” Reese stared him directly in the eyes, their gray ones stormy and dark.
“Bring us to Haru.”
THE GROUND BENEATH US IS SOLID
sitting under a tree in summer. the sound of light rain on a metal roof and old wooden coffee tables. getting so absorbed in a story that hours pass without you noticing. you probably judge people who don't use coasters. your best feature is your hands. you're often pretty logical, but you're also very gentle. you're not aggressive, but you do have strong opinions. you like gardening. you have a deep need for comfort and security. you like things to make sense. you're afraid of circumstances out of control, but letting go helps you live so much more vividly than you could ever imagine.
Tumblr media
FULL OF GOLDEN LIGHT
the smell of soup cooking in the other room. golden hour sunlight peeking in through the windows. laughter that bounces against the walls and smiles you can't help but mirror. you're easy to approach. your best feature is probably your smile. you don't mind looking silly if it makes people laugh. you're not easily embarrassed. you're calm and you make people feel at ease. you're a good listener because you really really care what they have to say. people leave every interaction with you feeling just a little bit more loved. you're a kind soul, and people can see that. you mean so much more to people than you know.
Tumblr media
SCARY DOG PRIVILEGE
loud music. laughing at bad horror movies. comfort through sitting in silence together. deep, intricate forests and dark shades of green and purple. your best feature is probably a birthmark, or maybe your nose. you often look stoic, but when you do smile, it lights up your whole face. you're observant. you probably have a soft spot for kids. for someone who looks so scary, you have this innate way of making people feel so safe. you're a natural protector. you just want people to have it better than you did. your kindness is subtle. not everyone will see it. but it's the cause of so much healing. even more than you can see.
Shadowed Cross - Prologue
(This is the AU @peachypede and I have been working on. Inspired by @bluebellowl's 50's AU.)
CW - None Cut for length. Enjoy.
The day was getting on. Just the barest hint of gold tinged the light as dusk heralded it’s coming. Two voices fluttered in the breeze as they held a spirited conversation. Their owners strolled along the sidewalk of a suburban area. A blonde man adjusted his glasses as he laughed as something his companion, a shorter brown hair woman had said. The gentle clicking of the chain on her bike that she pushed along side her could barely be heard over their chattering.
“Then the guy has the pair to suggest that maybe I got the order wrong. No way fella. You’re the only one in this town who orders bacon and pickles like that. That cutie that just walked by you honestly does not care that you eat like a freak.” The man laughed once more, his posture doubling over suddenly from her statement. He gathered his composure loosely before speaking through the residual laughter.
“Wow, Ilona, now I understand why you hated that job so much. I thought it was just because of the uniform…”
“The uniform was a big part of it, yeah…” Ilona shook her head. “But the amount of people who think you deserve to be treated like trash just because you’re paid to bring their food to them is astounding! Didn’t help to have the drunk guys commenting on my skirt… You could not pay me to return to that diner job…”
She nudged him with her elbow. “I think you probably would have looked better in that uniform that me, Everett!”
“HA! Fat chance! I don’t have the legs for it. I’ll stay in the lab, thank you.”
Silence fell between them briefly. Everett cleared his throat. “So… this delivery business is really working out for you?”
Ilona nodded. “Yeah! Best thing about it is that I get to wear what I want. As long as people’s packages get to them on time, they don’t seem to care how I dress.”
Everett looked Ilona over as she spoke. They made quite the pair. Him clad in slacks and a dress shirt with a sweater tied around his shoulders. Her clad in over sized men’s clothes. Both the shirt and pants were worn, showing their age and the day to day torture they went through. Her figure was completely hidden underneath. She could have passed as a young teenage boy with her hair clipped short just below her ears.
“Ilona? Is that a new patch?”
Everett gestured to a patch on the thigh of the worn gray slacks that hung from her waist. She eyed the square of red gingham curiously.
“Oh yeah… Kind got ripped on the fence around Mr. Carlson’s yard.”
“What… what were you doing in Mr. Carlson’s yard?” Ilona waved her hands nervously as she spoke. “Eh, I had to take a shortcut because of accident at the intersection. Rubberneckers were crowding the place so bad I couldn’t get through. I decided cutting through Mr. Carlson’s yard would be okay.”
Everett’s eyes nearly pooped out his head. “Are you insane!? How in the world did you get past his dogs!?”
“Speed. I just kinda threw my bike on my back and booked it. I’m surprised they took so long to start chasing me. I was thankfully half way over the other fence before they even reached me.”
Everett looked to her shirt and arms. Scuffs from where the bike had sat on her shoulder were evident. Tell tale scrapes were on her arm. Ones that suggest the skin was raked by the metal links of the fence. “But they reached you!”
“Not really!” Ilona looked down at her boots. “One actually just got my shoelace and untied my shoe as I was going over the fence. It slipped right out it’s teeth so they didn’t so any harm.”
Everett took her arm and looked at the scrapes then at her like a disappointed parent. She jerked her hand back. “I cleaned it. Calm down.”
“How much blood?”
“A fair bit… as expected. I don’t plan on pulling that stunt again so you can put away the look.”
Ilona looked to the sky. “Speaking of deliveries though…” She raised a hand to the sky and held it sideways in front of her. A few moments of quiet counting passed.
“It’s about time to make my last delivery…” She looked to the opposite direction. While the sky before them was clear and beautiful, a wall of darkness was creeping along behind them. “I’d better go ahead and get on it before that storm rolls in…”
Ilona began to get on her bike. Everett cleared his throat again and rubbed his hand over the back of his neck. “Ilona… you know, you really should come back to the lab with me. We just lost a technician and you’d be perfect for the position. I could put in a good word for you.”
Ilona scoffed. “No. Thank you. I’m fine with what I’d doing now. It’s actually kinda of fun sometimes.”
“Lab work could be fun! I remember how much you loved researching and figuring out things in our college courses. You have so much potential! Why waste it as a delivery biker?”
“Because I feel more useful being a delivery biker.”
“You’d be more useful helping us find cures to illnesses!”
Ilona sighed. She stood astride on her bike. He shoulders slumped slightly. “I’m more useful here because I provide a service to everyone, not just the ones I think I could turn a profit on.” She glared back at him. Her blue eyes sparking. “And if you gave half a damn about me, you’d let me use What time I have left how I see fit!”
Everett stared at her wide eyed. His gaze dropped as she let out a ragged sigh.
“No. Forget that. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.”
“You know I worry about you. Pecha and I both worry about you.”
“You don’t need to. I’m fine.”
Ilona put a foot up on a peddle. “Look, I know you are just DYING to stage an intervention so I’ll humor you. How about we meet up at Jerry’s Diner tomorrow? I hear that they have new stuffed french toast and I kinda want to try it.”
Everett nodded. “Fine but you better show up. I will track you down and drag you there if I have to.”
Ilona nodded. “Yeah yeah. I know you will.”
She pushed off with her other foot and began to pedal away. “See you tomorrow! I promise!”
Everett waved after her half heartedly. He frowned as she disappeared around the corner. Hopefully he’d make some kind of break through with her tomorrow.
