ultimately all activism comes down to this and the body positivity movement isn't unique in the fact that it focuses on theory rather than practicality, but im so done with every catchy slogan that's used as a caption on photos of fat bodies without any real life, tangible applications
"all bodies are beautiful" means nothing when every fashion trend and clothing brand that decides what "beauty" even means for the current season focuses on skinny bodies first and just tries to size up their clothes for fat bodies as an after thought, simply scaling up a design made for skinny bodies with no regard to different needs and proportions of fat bodies
showing me fat instagram influencers in gorgeous outfits they were sponsored to promote as an example of how "fat people can look just as stylish as skinny people" isn't inspirational to me, a normal person who doesn't have the budget to spend on an entire wardrobe of boutique plus sized clothes
preaching for people to embrace and accept fat bodies doesn't do jack shit when we're still expected to make do with products that aren't built for us. we don't need to be told to love ourselves, we need structures designed with us in mind, arm rests that don't dig into our thighs. i don't care if you find me attractive i just need products that can support my size without breaking down, pants i can wear without wearing holes in the inseam because the manufacturer didn't consider that a fat person's legs will wear down fabric differently than a skinny person's.
the issue of tying human worth to attractiveness exists regardless of physical size. all people of all sizes are subject to the idea that in order to be deserving of basic amenities you must present yourself in a way that the public feels comfortable looking at. but within this flawed system, the resources needed to be seen as presentable (and therefore worthy of respect and comfort) are obscenely less accessible to fat people than skinny people.
(—and i would be remiss to not mention the fact that in addition to the above, the standards for what even count as "presentable" are rooted in eurocentrism and white supremacy, but that topic is not one i can offer insight on without speaking over the people of color already discussing it more authentically than i could.)
