November 25th is the international day for the elimination of violence against women. One of the cases where certain kinds of violence (sometimes very extreme, even having been considered torture by UN standards) against women and people perceived as women is normalized is obstetric violence, so I wanted to share this short clip about how healthcare professionals can begin to address it by incorporating respect.
Clip from the documentary “Dona, vostè no té res!” by TV3 about obstetric violence.
This woodcut illustration of a newborn baby boy is from 'Opusculum physiologum et anatomicum' (1597) by French physician and surgeon Severin Pineau. Pineau specialised in obstetrics, embryology and gynaecology. His writings on the mechanics of human reproduction caused a sensation at the time which led to some editions being banned.
I feel like there's not enough appreciation for book coriolanus' internal sass. Like, when he's in Dr Gaul's lab after he gets sejanus out of the arena, and Gaul tells him she started out as an obstetrician, his inner thoughts are just:
"How awful to.have you be the first person in the world a baby sees."
Man is a piece of shit, but no one can say he's not funny as hell.
Admitted a woman today who immediately was taken to the OR for a bilateral below the knee amputation following a vaginal delivery. It’s these cases that literally terrify me and make me so thankful for 1) never experiencing anything like it and 2) working in a level 1 trauma center where we have the resources to care for these women. You think obstetrics and you think smiling happy moms and babies but god, the shit we’ve dealt with lately.. what is happening
“Despite a number of anatomical, hormonal, fertility, and obstetric considerations that require consideration, there is no overwhelming clinical argument against performing UTx [(uterine transplantation)] as part of GRS [(gender reassignment surgery)]. However, the increased radicality associated with the retrieval operation… potentially necessitates the use of deceased donors. Alternatively, F2M transgender men may offer an alternative donor pool should they accept the increased risk compared with standard hysterectomy.”
