"You are a creature of free will. You get to choose what you put in your mouth and swallow, and those choices ultimately determine your health. Your taste buds and gut microbes can change, and you can train them to fall in love with things that are actually good for you." -Dr. Will Bulsiewicz
Sometimes I remember things from childhood and it makes me sad that any adult would act like that towards a child.
I've always had an issue with food, basically I get sensory overload from tastes and food textures really easily so my diet is super restricted and it always has been. At one point my mom mentioned being concerned about it to my doctor, who put in a referral for a nutritionist.
I remember two things about that visit. She was very insistent on telling me what size a serving of various foods was, focusing on telling me stuff like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich wasn't a full serving of fruit.
And she told me that your brain doesn't get the "full" signal from your brain for 20 minutes, so it's important to eat slow and give your brain time to get that signal. I remember thinking that was stupid and dismissing it as irrelevant, but the info stuck with me. I don't remember ever being an over eater, in fact I was always much more likely to eat very little because of my limited diet (one of my friend's mom was certain I would go home starving with how little I ate when I'd stay over at their house), and I know my mom was more concerned about me not getting enough nutrients than me eating too much. But the nutritionist seemed very concerned that I was overeating.
It just occurred to me now, 20-some years later, that that was probably my first encounter with fatshaming. The nutritionist just assumed, because I was a chubby child, that my problem was eating too much. She clearly knew nothing about me and hadn't read the referral or asked my mom her concerns, she just took one look at me and assumed "fat=needs to eat less".
But recently I’ve been getting called to counsel on dog nutrition. And it’s proven to be more lucrative than my human clients, AND they actually eat everything I suggest. Unlike my humans.
Perhaps I’ll gear into the world of dog nutrition?! 🤣 set up an online portal where I can counsel from anywhere, to anyone.
my wheels r turning, any tidbits of advice is appreciated hehe
I remember feeling scared in the kitchen out of fear that someone would come in and comment on my meal in an insulting way. I’d proceed to throw out the food and starve myself because I thought I didn’t deserve to eat at all.
Today that fear lingers but my confidence overcomes it. I have the voice to speak up and against the harmful comments that come from those closest to me.
It took years for me but it’s never too late to start. If you or someone you know struggles with an eating disorder or anxiety like this, know you’re not alone. It's ok to ask for help.
I was able to lose quite a bit with this nutritionist before, but a few things she has said have made me wonder if I need to stop going. i know sometimes you have to take medical advice even if it is something like "don't eat chocolate so often," like okay, I hate it, but I know it's true.
But she encouraged me to continue exercising when I sprained and bone bruised my ankle, when the bone doc person said to stay off of it, and she has challenged some of my mental health meds, which I know some cause weight gain, but I'm not messing with something that keeps me sane even if it makes it harder to lose.
And I gained 3 pounds after this last visit, then lost 4. Is that a 4 pound loss that I worked hard for? yes, very much, but she counts only losses, not gains, so it'll only count for one pound, and that bothers me,
is that typical practice? Am I being stubborn? should I look elsewhere?
One thing I have noticed once I started my fitness journey 2 years ago is to not only pay attention to your calorie counting but also look at the nutrition and the value of the food you are consuming.
it has a lot to do with how we feel, once i had that figured out it was easier for me to ensemble meals together that doesn't feel like I am overeating or starving myself.
I would have enough energy through out the day to follow my fulltime study and perform as a kickboxer.
