no time for goodbyes - luke hughes
word count: 4,282
a/n: so this is technically the first installment of the coug!read x luke seeing as I still haven't finished the other fic, or even started the fic that is the beginning of coug!luke. but I was in my feels last night, so please enjoy this heart wrenching fic🫶🏼
-
the night had started to wind down for everyone in the sophomore house the minute you had gotten back from student teaching. the boys being exhausted from a monday afternoon practice, and you being exhausted from chasing around six-year-olds for eight hours straight. when your five sophomore hockey players walked through the front door a little after four o’clock they found you passed out on the couch, still dressed in your blue and white checkered and a plain white tee. luke was in charge of carrying you up the stairs to your room so mark and eddy’s disaster of cooking dinner wouldn’t wake you from a much-needed rest.
you woke up an hour or so later by lightly shaking you awake. mumbling a soft, “marky and eddy made dinner for us, coug.” to which immediately woke you up based on the fact the last time mark and eddy tried making dinner you almost no longer had a house due a kitchen fire. you stumbled around the practically empty bedroom, minus the boxes stacked up in the corners, before groggily booking it down the stairs to make sure everyone was still alive.
when you ran into the kitchen and dining room area the other four were seated around the dining table in their unofficial seats, smiles on their faces waiting for you to finally join them in order to have one of the last meals together as a found family. after practice tomorrow they were departing to the airport right from yost in order to get on the plane to tampa. meaning that this was it. this was the last meal with all five of them together as once michigan was done so was luke. he was to board a plane straight from tampa to newark and the last two years at michigan would officially be in the books for the youngest hughes brother. leaving you in a house full of four other hockey boys until it was your turn to join luke in jersey after april 28th: graduation day.
“you guys made family dinner,” you smiled as the bittersweet words left your mouth. not yet wanting to believe that this was the end of the cherry on top of your time at michigan. “and you didn’t even burn the house down. i’m so proud of you.”
there was a chorus of laughter that filled your ears before luke pulled your seat out for you. once he pushed you in all the way he took his seat to the left of you, sitting so he was for the last time eating a meal between two of his favorite people - you and dylan. the conversation between bites of the steak, mashed potatoes, and caesar salad was almost nonexistent. everyone in an unspoken agreement to just sit there and soak it all in. of course small talk was eventually made as mackie made you a glass of wine, claiming that it was well deserved even though it was only monday. he knew how hard you were taking everything, you may not have told him directly, but he knew. all of the boys knew. while this was luke’s last week of college hockey, it was also the last week everything would be semi-normal regarding your relationship. the nhl and the demanding schedule an obvious looming fear to both of you.
the conversation died out after hearing how practice went and the six year olds who had crushes on you found out you would be leaving them soon. and soon one by one all of you dismissed yourself from the table. mark being first, trying to get out of dish duty. eddy followed second, taking everyone’s dishes as he went. dylan sprinted away afterwards as if filming a monday questions video. leaving mackie, youself, and luke. you were the next to fall, not wanting to be, but ultimately knowing you had too much to do in order to prepare for missing all of your classes thursday and friday in order to be in tampa. your left hand squeezed luke’s right, as your right hand ran over the discolored wooden table. “‘ve gotta head up, lukey,” you whispered over to him. a sad smile taking over your face while you stared at him as you tried to read the expression on his face. praying his blue eyes would give you a little insight into what he was thinking. he hummed before turning to look at you. “get out of my work clothes, shower,” you then explained. “go through your bags to make sure you have everything.”
the last part earned a laugh from mackie seeing as he had done the same for both mark and eddy. duker being too stubborn not allowing anyone to double check for him. “goodnight y/n/n, see you tomorrow?” mackie asked with a hopeful smile.
shaking your head you frowned, “i’ve got school.” instantly the rain cloud that had a hold over the room became even heavier at your words. “i won’t see you guys until thursday. i’m in the middle of teaching during the send-off, and since i’m already missing thursday and friday…” you trailed off at the end, not having the heart to speak anymore. too afraid that you would break down in the middle of the dining room if you did.
“i get it,” mackie answered with a sweet smile. “we’ll see you thursday, mom.”
nodding your head you turned your attention back to your boyfriend. “i’ll be up soon, cougy,” he mumbled, eyes meeting your for a split second before he looked back at the table. the use of ‘cougy’ instead of ‘coug’ was what tipped you off to what was going on inside of his head. he was reaching his emotional breaking point.
“okay, lu.” he leaned down and pressed a kiss against the top of his curls before turning to look back at mackie, “night macks. take care of everyone for me until thursday, yeah?” he gave you a final salute and that’s when you started your terk upstairs to the empty bedroom once more. it made your heart heavy to walk into a room that was normally so full of life, reflecting yours and luke’s personalities, packed away into boxes like it had been since the end of the big ten tournament. between preparing for regionals, classes, and student teaching luke and you were busy packing up your lives at the mere fact that his season could’ve ended two weeks ago meaning you had to be prepared in case that was to happen.
you let out a deep sigh and walked into the empty room, slowly closing the door behind you so nobody could hear as your walls came crashing down faster than you could piece them together. the shower was where you choose to break down for the night. already knowing that luke would leave you to yourself once he came into the room since he had showered at yost after practice, and knew you needed this time to decompress. so that’s exactly what you did. you sat under the scolding hot water letting the tears stream down your face as you silently sobbed over your college life that was coming to an end. over this being luke’s last week as a michigan wolverine. at how after his nhl debut you wouldn’t see him again until graduation, something you needed to bring up to him and talk about as the devils would be in the playoffs and there was no way you’d let him miss anything hockey related just to watch you walk across a stage.
when you finally got out of your depression shower, luke was already camped out in your bed. the comforter was pooled around his waist, his bare chest on full display for you. just waiting for you to climb in next to him. “how was your shower, coug?” his voice was tight as he asked the question, and you wondered if this was when it finally happened. if this was the moment luke finally allowed himself to come to terms with the whirlwind of emotions he was currently experiencing.
“it was nice,” you answered honestly. “helped me clear my mind.” right away you knew luke would understand what you were getting about. slightly hoping that he would take it as a subtle hint that he too could confess everything he was going through to you. instead, all you got back from him was a small hum of acknowledgment, eyes downcast on his phone screen. after changing into your pajamas which consisted of luke’s boxers and a worn-out ntdp t-shirt, you crawled into bed next to him. arms immediately wrapping around his torso, head falling against his chest. “i never got around to looking through your bag to make sure you have everything,” you said to break the silence of the room. “i’m not that worried though,” you added on, “i mean everything you needed was the only things you could pack. you just have to remember your chargers in the morning before you go to practice. i can text you in the morning to remind you if you want.”
when luke didn’t answer you thought maybe he had fallen asleep. it wouldn’t have been the first time the worn out hockey player fell asleep while in the middle of a conversation with you. only that wasn’t the case this time. you could feel from underneath its resting place as his heart rate began to increase. his breathing beginning to follow in it’s footsteps. “hey lukey, baby, we gotta sit up. can you sit up for me?” you asked, already knowing what was about to happen. luke was on the verge of a panic attack, everything hitting him all at once. the packed boxes. the final practice at yost is tomorrow. an elc in his future.
“‘m okay,” he choked out between ragged breaths. “just, just stay here. just lay here.” you knew he was referring to you staying situated on his chest, feeling the safest when he had you cuddled up on top of him.
shaking your head you propped yourself up instantly. throwing your legs on either side of his waist in order to straddle his lap. “no, no luke i need you to sit up for me. okay? can you do that for me, baby?” you asked while staring down at him. his eyes were screwed shut, knowing that if he had them open you would be able to see how red and puffy they were. his final moments of sitting at the kitchen table after family dinner ended causing everything to hit him like a freight truck. “luke, i’ve got you,” you whispered, hands cupping his cheeks, “but i need, you have to sit up for me. please.” you were disparately pulling him into a sitting position, letting his head fall against your chest. his arms wrapping around your waist in a bone-crushing hug. “i’ve got you. i have you, lukey. it’s okay. i’m right here. you’re safe. just, just get it out. deep breathes.” your words were muttered into the top of his curls, as you soothingly ran a hand up and down his back. the other laced in the curls at the nape of his neck. “i love you. i’m here. you’re okay. i’ve got you, lukey.”
“i- i, i start playing in the nhl as soon as saturday,” he finally spoke. voice cracking as he did so, his breathing slowly coming back to a normal rhythm. “tomorrow… tomorrow’s my last ever practice at yost. tonight was the last family dinner.” you could feel your own heart breaking all over again at his words. shattering even more so as you knew there was nothing you could say or do to make things better. “our fucking bedroom has been packed up to leave for two weeks!” his hold on you got tighter with each realization. your presence being enough to ground him in this instance for him to get all of his emotions out before it was too late. “cougy, this is it. it’s my final week of college hockey.” it took all the strength in his body to force his head up to look at you. his blue eyes as clear as glass due to the tears that were pouring down his cheeks. “my final week of seeing you every single day until i retire, which will be what? like ten-fifteen years from now?”
you squeezed your eyes shut in order to prevent the tears from slipping out. forehead dipping down to rest against his, “it’ll be okay, lukey. we’re going to make this work. you have to take the good and the bad. that’s what you’ve been telling me since january right?” just barely his forehead moved against yours in a nodding motion. “plus it’s me and you, honey. me and you no matter what.”
“you and me,” he whispered against your lips. you could taste the salt from his tears that were staining his cracked lips with every word he spoke. “but coug, i just. this is it. it’s over. and, and i don’t even get to say goodbye to you tomorrow. you’ll be gone before i wake up, and i won’t see you until thursday. and - and if we lose it’ll be for nothing.”
“it won’t be for nothing, luke warren,” you corrected with a pointed look. “everything you’ve done, everything i’ve chosen to do in order to watch you play this year has not been for nothing, luke. i do it because i love you. because there is nobody out there more proud of you than me,” you confessed with a small smile, “just don’t tell your parents i said that.” your little jab jim and ellen caused a small smile to grace luke’s face as well. “if you lose on thursday, which you’re not going too, then we get on a plane and we go to jersey. you get on the team plane and go to boston, and i’ll fly out with your parents. we’ll be there for you first ever fucking nhl game, and i’ll be there standing and waiting for you. tears streaming down my face just like after you scored your hat trick. you know why?”
he shook his head, “no. why?”
“becuase i love you,” you answered. “because the last three years of my life have been the best years of my life because i’ve spent them loving you. officially i mean. but what you’re feeling right now luke? it’s normal. it’s healthy. it means that we have met some incredible people who we are so lucky to have in our lives. people that are always going to be there for us, no matter what happens in the future.”
he let out a shaky breathe while he let his eyes meet yours once more. “you graduate college in twenty-five days. and then you’re mine. in jersey, and everything will be okay again. i’ll be there to watch you walk across the stage, and then we’re together, never apart again.”
your heart was in your throat at his words, knowing that there was no better time to bring this up than right now. “about graduation, lu, you’re going to be in the playoffs. as much as i want you there, you can’t be if you have something hockey related. especially if you have a game scheduled for it.” the way his arms loosened around your waist is how you knew you struck a nerve within the nineteen-year-old. “i just! having our parents there will be enough for me. and as soon as the ceremony ends we can have a devils watch party at your house! cheering on my favorite boy, and my best friend.”
luke’s face hardened with every passing second. not at all thrilled by what you had said. “i’m not missing your college graduation, y/n,” he grumbled, clearly frustrated by the fact you had suggested such an outrageous thing. “you realize you’re the only one of us whose’s going to graduate college and have a degree, right?” by that you knew he was referring to quinn, jack, himself and you. the four of you being thick as thieves since you grew up next to each other. you and jack have been best friends since your shared birthday, as well as the fact your mothers were best friends. “how could i miss that? miss the love of my life getting her degree that she’s worked her ass off for the past four years to get it? no, absolutely not. i’m coming to graduation on the twenty-eighth. game or no game. end of discussion.”
it was no secret to either of you that you had more to say on the topic, but you knew when luke was set on something he was going to do it so you dropped it. “okay, you’re coming to graduation. but as soon as it’s over we’re getting on the first flight newark, got it?”
“got it, coug,” he agreed with a smile growing on his face. his head dropped back to rest against your chest once more. his tears pooling into the already wet fabric. “do you think i - i mean, do you think we can do it this week. win the natty? push my rookie game back until the eleventh?”
“of course i think you can do it, moosey,” you answered with nothing but certainty. “there’s nothing you guys can’t do. you know that.”
he let out the breath that he was holding in. nuzzling his head further into the cotton fabric that smelled just like you. “i’m sorry i acted like the world was falling apart tonight. it’s just, i never thought we’d actually get to this point,” luke confided in you. “it always seemed so far away, like we’d never actually make it to this day. but now it’s here, and i feel like there’s still so much i haven’t done with the guys. so much i haven’t done with you, coug.”
you dropped your head to rest against his fluffy curls, taking a deep breath in to smell his shampoo and conditioner. “don’t apologize my sweet boy,” you cooed, kissing the top of his head. “i mean i just broke down in the shower before you got in here. it’s okay, i promise you. it’s a little scary, yes, but you have nothing to regret, lukey. you have left such an incredible impact on everyone here and mich, and you’re going to be so fucking missed. fuck, i’m going to miss you those two weeks before i get to see you at graduation.”
“don’t remind me about that,” he groaned, head diving forward so you were now laying on your back and he was on top of you. a squeal left your mouth from the action, cradling his head closer to your chest. “those two weeks are literally going to be hell, cougy. we’ve never been apart for that long before.” humming you ran your hands through his hair. trying to find the right words in order to try and calm his nerves about it. “are you going to be able to survive without me for that long, y/n/n?”
“god no, lukey. how am i supposed to fall asleep in an empty room with you not here to hold me?”
you could feel the frown form on his face through the t-shirt. “i’ll call you every single night. make sure that you get to sleep. no matter how much jack chirps me, i don’t care. and if, you know, the depression gets a little too much in those two weeks, just go climb into bed with duker. or make a bed in mackie’s room.”
a cold shiver ran through your body at the thought of you sleeping in the same bed as dylan. of course, it’s something you’d done before with him being your college best friend. sometimes it was because he needed to comfort of someone other than his boys, someone who would actually listen to what he was feeling and try and help him through it. other times it would be because luke was busy and you were on the verge of crumbling apart. it was in those times dylan would make it a mandate you slept in his room where he could keep an eye on you before luke got home. in fact, you’ve slept in every room of the sophomore house. taking turns making sure your college children weren’t sad or just being there in case they needed the gentle loving that only you could offer them. “ew absolutely not!” you laughed. luke’s head tilting up to look at you with a smile. “i don’t want to step foot in that room. we don’t know what goes on in there anymore. it’s definitely highly unsanitary.”
a chuckle fell past luke’s lips before he rested his head in the crook of your neck. his breath fanning against your skin, lips just barely grazing the skin there. “you could always have him sleep in here.”
you shrugged your shoulders. “i was thinking about just going home,” you mumbled, almost as if you were scared to admit that you wanted to spend the last two weeks of your college career in either yours or luke’s childhood bedroom. “i love the boys, and i love being here. but i just, i feel like it might be better for me to stay at home. i mean i’ll have your parents, my parents. being here just won’t be the same without you, lukey.”
the sudden confession you had just made was pulling on luke’s heartstrings. “would you drive to school and teaching?” you nodded your head ever so slightly, eyes growing heavy with each passing second. the physical and emotional exhaustion finally hitting you once more. “you could always take my car too if you wanted. just so you’re not constantly using your own.”
yawning you smiled, “i was already planning on it, lukey.” your eyes were closed when luke looked back up at you, and he could feel as your breathing began to even out from underneath him. “i love you, luke.”
multiple kisses were pressed against the skin of your neck and jaw, pulling a smile on the corners of your lips. “i love you too, y/n/n. get some sleep, okay, cougy? i’ll be here when you wake up tomorrow.” and with that you drifted off to sleep for the final time in a full sophomore house.
when you woke up in the morning to the sound of your alarm part of you was confused as to how your phone got in the room seeing you don’t remember ever grabbing it off the coffee table after your post-school nap. only to remember that luke thought of everything when it came to you and without a doubt brought it up when he came up from dinner. reluctantly you carefully slid yourself out from under the dead weight that was luke’s sleeping body in order to get ready. grabbing a throw blanket you carefully tucked him in, allowing him the chance to sleep in until his own alarm went off to start his day.
getting ready you were stuck in a whirlwind of emotions as you remembered you wouldn’t see any of the boys until thursday morning, having chosen to surprise them by flying out wednesday night rather than thursday morning like you originally told them all. once dressed and ready to make your way to the elementary school you were student teaching at you sat down at your desk, slipping on your cartier ring luke had gifted you along with the necklace that adorned his favorite nickname. your attention then turned to the post-it note stack, maize yellow of course. grabbing the navy blue pen you had resting beside it you scribbled out two final notes for your boyfriend and the boys you considered your children.
lukey, i love you so incredibly much i’ll see you on thursday. you’re going to do amazing this week, take it all in. text me when your boarding and when you land. i’ll meet you in tampa, moosey. me and you, sweet boy. - coug<3
after writing both notes you stuck luke’s against his phone he had plugged in on his bed side table. running back to press a kiss against his cheek. a smile pulling on his feature even though he was sleeping. “i love you, lukey,” you then whispered into his ear. kissing the top of his head one last time before you carefully slipped out of your bedroom. the next and final stop in the early morning hours of the house was the front door. you were frozen as you stood there waiting to walk out, knowing if you didn’t leave now you would be late to school after running to starbucks. so you forced yourself to put the final note up on the door.
to my hughes wedding bridal party, make sure you have absolutely everything- CHARGERS!!! now that thats out of the way, know that win or lose i’m always going to be proud of you guys. thank you for the past year, there’s nobody else i would want to life willingly with. i’ll see you in tampa! love you guys. - coug… aka mom<3
you stared at the note for a minute longer than what was necessary, tearing beginning to well in your eyes before you forced yourself to open the front door. taking a deep breath you pulled it closed behind you, as well as closing the door on the last four years of life.

-MID JUNE '23-
Being Trevor’s little sister, Alex Turcotte was no stranger to you, no he was practically another brother to you. The two hockey players have always been close during their NTDP days, but their bond only grower closer and deeper as they arrived in their neighboring cities to start their professional hockey careers. At first, the two were always together, getting tattoos at the same time, something you teased them about, going to check out cars, everything they did, the other was right next to him.
Over the time, your own friendship with the Chicago native grew, and he was the first person you’d talk to whenever you had problems you didn’t want your actual brothers to know about. He was one of the first to know about your new friendship with the youngest Hughes, the defenceman also seeing the Turcotte boy as an older brother since he lived with them for two years. It was safe to say Alex was over the moon when he found out his “adopted little siblings”, as he liked to call the two of you, were finally friends.
When you and Luke got together, you both wanted to tell Alex more than anyone else, but you both knew how bad he was at keeping secrets, getting too excited about them and blurring them out without even noticing. So, it was a mutual decision to not tell him before your brothers, not wanting him to tell your real siblings about your relationship.
You were pretty good at acting like nothing was going on whenever he’d question you about the Hughes boy, but for Luke, that was a different story. The boy stuttered everything he’d have to answer the simplest question about you, how you were doing, how your classes were, it all made Luke so nervous.
The worst time was when Alex called him while the two of you were studying in his room together, you could hear his voice coming from Luke’s phone speaker slightly, holding back a laugh as you heard your name being said. Your boyfriend looking at you with wide eyes, stuttering over his words as he informed the Turcotte boy that you were right next to him.
Their call ended with Alex asking the young boy to tell you he’d be calling soon, and Luke waisted no time hanging the phone and letting out a loud sigh as a laugh erupted from you. For the next week or so, you took every chance you got to tease him about how nervous he was, his face growing red everytime you’d mention it.
Now, here you sat on the dock of Jack and Quinn’s home in Michigan, your feet barely touching the water as birds sang in the air, the sound of the family a couple of houses over swimming being heard. It was early in the morning, none of the boys were up yet, having stayed up late last night considering today was a day off, meaning you had peace and quiet for what felt like the first time in almost a week.
You had been invited by the middle Hughes brother months ago when they were planning this, before you and Luke we’re even together, still in the early stage of your friendship. But, even if Jack hadn’t personally invited you, Luke would’ve asked you to come, or Trevor would’ve dragged you there, tired of hearing Cole complain about how excited he was to see his favorite Swifty, the boy deciding to buy you tickets to the show in Detroit for your birthday.
You had now been a resident of the Hughes’ brothers lake house for almost two weeks now, and sneaking around the boys had been pretty easy so far. They weren’t the smartest out there, and they also just never knew what was going on around them, making it pretty easy for you two to sneak around at night or even during the day. You and Luke both thought you were doing amazing at keeping your relationship a secret from the boys, well at least from his brothers and Cole, Alex though, he was different.
Whenever you and your boyfriend would be sitting next to each other on the boat, casually talking, the boy would always be looking over at the two of you. You ignored it though, thinking it was probably just weird for him to actually see the two of interacting for the first time, but that all quickly changed the night before your brother was supposed to arrive in Michigan.
You were sitting at the end of the dock, your feet barely touching the water as your eyes were stucked on the sunset in front of you. The lake was quiet, it always was during this time of day, most families either eating a late dinner outside or already starting a firecamp, which is what the boys were doing at the moment.
Firecamp time mainly included them arguing about who got to do what, and at first you would just watch and laugh, but eventually you grew tired of their childish bickering and decided the dock would be where you spent your time while you waited for them to do done. You liked to consider it your alone time for the day, considering the house was never silent until everyone went to sleep and the noise would start again early in the morning before they left to train.
You used the hours they were gone to sleep, since sleep hand’t came until the early hours of the morning staying up late in Luke’s room until the boy fell asleep before slipping back into yours, that you’d soon be sharing with Trevor.
“Hey.” Alex said, sitting down next to you. His voice made you jump slightly, lost in your thoughts, a small chuckle leaving his mouth at his reaction. “Sorry.”
“You’re good.” You told him, smiling slightly at him before focusing back on the sight in front of you.
“You okay?” The boy asked after a couple of minutes of silence, his words making you look over at him with a confused look on your face.
“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?”
“I don’t know. I just feel like there’s something… weird going on with you.” He mumbled. You bit the inside of your cheek slightly before looking back in front of you, the action going unnoticed by the older boy.
“I am normal.” You said confused, making Alex let out a laugh.
“That’s not what I meant, Y/N/N. It just feels like you’re hiding something, that’s what I meant by weird.” He explained after his laugh died down. You once again bit your the inside of your cheek, this time your action didn’t go unnoticed by the hockey player. His elbow nudge when he noticed how silent you were being. “Talk to me.”
“Can you keep a secret?” You whispered, your eyes now focused on the water below your feet.
“Mh-hm.”
“Luke and I are dating.” You admitted, your voice low, almost scared someone would hear. The boy next to you stayed quiet for a while, making you a little worried.
“Old news.” Alex said after almost a minute, making your head whip towards him with wide eyes. “Z couldn’t shut up about it, freaked out a little when he found out you two were already at the L word stage.”
“Trev told you?”
“Told all of us, we all know. That’s why I thought something was wrong, you and Luke weren’t acting like Trev describe the two of you. Asked Moose about it, why you were acting weird, said he thought you were acting pretty normal.” The curly headed boy explained, a soft grin on his face.
“Trev’s an asshole, I told him not to tell anyone.”
“You really expected him to be able to keep any kind of secret? He spammed our groupchat at like midnight, Jack wasn’t happy to get woken up.”
“How’d Jack react?”
“I think he’s scared. If something bad happens between you two, it’s gonna be weird for him and Z to act like nothing happened. And if nothing bad happens, he’s scared he’s gonna be stuck being brother’s in-law with him.” The boy explained. A part of you almost started feeling guilty for maybe ruinning your brother’s friendship, but you knew Luke was the one for you.
“Ellen said he’s never seen him like this.” You admitted, a smile of your own appearing on your face as your cheeks became a slight shade of pink.
“Can’t believe you didn’t tell me though, how long as it been?”
“Almost six months. December 14th.” You told him, a small gasp leaving his mouth.
“I am wounded!” He exclaimed, his right hand coming up to rest on top of his heart, making you roll your eyes. “We’ve only known since like April!”
~
After a couple of minutes of talking about your relationship with the youngest Hughes boy, you and Alex made your way back to the firecamp after Cole had called out for them. Once you had made it back, you saw Luke standing along in the kitchen, his back facing the outside. You excused yourself quietly before making your way in with a grin on your face.
Since the patio door was always left open, your boyfriend didn’t hear you, so when he felt a pair of arms wrap around his waist, it’s safe to say he freaked out a little. The cup he was holding fell on the counter, the drink he had made spilling everywhere as a yelp left his mouth.
“It’s just me Lemon.” You mumbled as you poked your head above his shoulder, standing on your tippy toes. His body turned slightly, grabbing your waist before bringing you in front of him, a yelp of your own echoing in the kitchen.
Before the defensemen had time to say anything, you quickly connected your lips together. You hands reaching to the back of his head and his neck, holding his body close to yours as your lips moved together. Whistles and howlers could be heard from the boys outside, making Luke pull away from you.
“What’re you―”
“They know, Lu, they’ve known. Since April, because Trevor can’t keep his fucking mouth shut.” You explained, Luke smiling down at your brightly before connecting your lips again. His arms now completely wrapped around your waist as he pulled your body to his as possible.
“I love you, Munchkin.”
“I love you more, Lemon.”

Summer Lovin'— Quinn Hughes
Tumblr media
request: "for Quinn's beautiful Monday Y/n has been best friends with Jack for years and was always invited to the boys' parties and summers at the lake house. She and Quinn were never close, he only saw her as his younger brother's best friend, but now, this summer at the lake house, Jack invites her over to catch up on their homesickness. Quinn hasn't seen Y/N in a couple of years (she's in college) and is amazed at how beautiful, mature, smart, and sarcastic she has become. I imagine them flirting as a joke, him trying to win her over AND Jack being jealous of his best friend"

You hadn’t been to the Hughes family lake house in a while. This summer will be the first time in three years due to moving away for college in California. You’ve seen Jack a few times, obviously, since he’s your best friend. But the rest of the family? It’s been a while.
You arrived an hour early, so the boys and their friends are still out on the boat. You took the time to catch up with Jim and Ellen, telling them all about your life in college so far.
“I better see a graduation invitation in the mail!” Ellen said, pointing her finger at you.
“You will!” you laughed. “I can’t graduate without my second family there!”
The boys, them being Jack, Quinn, Luke, Trevor, and Dylan, got back to the house about an hour and a half after you arrived. Jack definitely spotted your car parked out front, because he bursted open the door.
“Y/N!” Jack yelled excitedly.
You turned around with a big smile on your face and ran straight to your best friend. You practically jumped into his arms and he spun you around in a giant hug, lifting your feet into the air.
“I’ve missed you so much!” you said when he put you down.
“My turn!” Trevor announced and pulled you in for a hug. “I’ve never missed someone so much!”
“I see you all the time,” you rolled your eyes jokingly. “I’ve enjoyed my space.”
“Rude!” Trevor gasped.
After you pulled away from Trevor’s hug, you spotted Quinn. He looked different than the last time you saw him. Really saw him, since you watched all of his games over the years. He looked good. Really, really good. You were never that good of friends, since you were mostly just with Jack. Quinn had gone to NTDP and college and then the NHL, so you didn’t really have many good opportunities to get close.
“You cut your hair,” you smiled at Quinn. “It looks good.”
Quinn blushed and pulled you into a hug. You suddenly noticed your heart beating a little faster at his touch. Which is weird because you’ve never experienced that before around him.
“I’ve cut my hair lots of times over the past three years,” Quinn laughed.
“Yeah, but it’s different than when I last saw you on my TV! Can’t even take a compliment,” you tutted.
“You… You watched my games?” Quinn asked, clearly flustered.
“Every one,” you told him with a softness in your tone. What was going on with you?
Quinn and you stared at each other a little too long, but Luke stepped in before it got too noticeable.
“Hey, I missed you, too, you know!”
“Moose!” you said with glee. “Look at you! Look at how much you’ve grown!”
You played catch up with everyone. From the NHL seasons, to college, to injuries. You caught up with every single little detail. The details you paid the most attention to? Quinn’s. You talked about how hard some of the trades this season were, and how much he does love his new teammates. Jack inched closer to you every time you said some harmless, yet very flirty, comment at Quinn.
“I was dying at your fight in one of your last games! You took him down real quick, it was pretty entertaining,” you told Quinn.
“Entertaining?” he asked, laughing.
“Oh yeah; I would’ve loved a front row seat to that. It was kinda hot,” you said, putting your elbow on the table and resting your head in your hand.
Jack shot a look at Trevor, silently begging for him to do something.
“What about my fights?” Trevor asked, copying your pose. “Were those hot?”
“No, because you whined like a baby to me after about a bruise! And I’m not sure that any of your game time extra curricular activities classify as a fight! You’re just a professional nuisance,” you laughed, shoving your hand in his face to make him lose his balance.
“You’re a professional nuisance,” Trevor grumbled.
You fake gasped and put your hand over your heart, “How dare you! I’m an angel. Right, Quintin?”
“You’re alright,” Quinn said, sending you a wink. You couldn’t help but smile at him. And Jack couldn’t help but be practically glued to your hip and sending Quinn a look.
“See? I’m alright,” you smirked.
Quinn couldn’t keep his eyes off of you. You’ve grown up. He never noticed how beautiful and mature you’d gotten, while still keeping true to your joking and sarcastic self. He told you you were alright, but to him, you’re much more than that. He thinks you’re amazing. He thinks you’re mesmerizing.
Jack wasn’t a fan of how cozy you and his brother were getting. You used to barely talk to him growing up, and suddenly you think his fighting is hot? And he’s winking at you? You’re his best friend. Not Quinn’s. He didn’t even mind how close you and Trevor have gotten due to you going to college near where he lives. You two have always been friends. That isn’t new. This is.
Trevor, however, was all for this new flirtationship. He was enjoying watching it, much to Jack’s displeasure. You all decided to play Sorry, and by that you mean that you begged to play it and everyone would be in pairs. Trevor immediately called Jack as his partner, so Quinn took his chance to ask if you wanted to pair up. That left Luke and Duker as partners, and Jim and Ellen would play as the fourth pair.
“I’m going to whoop your ass, Hughesy,” you said, talking to Jack.
“Who’s ass? My ass?” Quinn asked jokingly.
“Maybe later,” you said, now sending him a wink. “But I meant Jack! He’s partnered with Trevor, so I’m elated for their downfall.”
“We could’ve been the dream team!” Jack protested.
“Yeah, you’d like that, wouldn’t you?” you teased. “This is much more fun.”
Luke and Dylan ended up winning first place, but you all continued to play for second, third, and fourth place. The parents got second, so that left you, Quinn, Jack, and Trevor playing for third.
You stood up and got behind Quinn when it was his turn to draw. You needed a two to win. You reached over and tapped twice on the deck and then put your hands on Quinn’s head. You leaned down and whispered into his ear, “You will draw a two! You hear me, Quintin? A two!”
You dramatically placed a quick and hard kiss on the top of his head and ruffled his hair for good measure for “the maximum good vibes.”
Quinn slowly picked up a card and hid it from everyone’s view, including your eyes. He sighed, acting like it wasn’t a good card.
“Sorry, bro,” Jack tutted. “We can’t all be winners.”
“That’s true,” Quinn agreed. He placed the card down, revealing it to be a two, “But not us.”
You threw your hands in the air and cheered, making a show to place your final piece in home. You hugged Quinn from behind and squeezed really tight making him laugh.
“That’s what I’m talking about! Suck it!”
“I think you’re too excited about third place,” Dylan laughed.
“I’m excited about Jacky and Z losing, Duker!”
After everyone called it a night, you followed Jack into his room instead of going straight to yours.
“Alright spill it,” you said as you sat down next to him on his bed. “You’ve been surgically attached to my hip and glaring at everybody since I got here. What is up with you?’
“Wouldn’t you rather be talking to Quinn?” Jack asked passive aggressively.
“Aww,” you cooed, wrapping your arms around him and resting your head on his shoulder. “Are you jealous, Jacky?”
“No! You’ve just been all over him today,” he grumbled, but accepted your hug.
“Don’t worry, Jacky, you’re still my number one guy. You’ll be my maid of honor at my future wedding!”
“It would be my honor,” Jack joked.
“That is in the title, so I sure hope so,” you said. “Why do you have a problem with me talking to Quinn?”
“You’re not just talking! You’re flirting and winking at each other and kissing him. It’s weird! You two have never been close.”
“It’s not like we’re making out! What’s wrong with being close to your family? It’s basically mine, too.”
“Do you like him?” he asked quietly.
“We’re adults, J,” you said low.
“That doesn’t answer my question!”
“I don’t know! Okay? This is new to me, too.”
Jack turned away from you and you sighed. You moved to be in his view again. You grabbed his face in your hands, “I don’t know if I like him or not. Everything just feels… different. And I know I like that.”
Jack said nothing. He looked deflated. He loved you, as his best friend, and he obviously loves his brother. But you two together? He didn’t love that at this moment.
You kissed his cheek after a long period of silence, giving up on him saying anything.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen this summer, but I hope I’m still your best friend at the end of it. Because you’ll always be mine.”
You got up and walked to his door to go to your room when the sound of his voice stopped you.
“You’ll still be my best friend. No matter what,” Jack told you. You turned back around and sent him a soft smile, “Goodnight, J.”
The next few weeks consisted of more flirting and teasing between you and Quinn, more bullying of Trevor, scolding the boys whenever they teased Luke and Dylan because they’re your “precious and innocent babies.”
The sexual tension between you and Quinn grew tremendously every day. You were now completely sure of your feelings and it was driving you crazy. Summer was almost over, and you decided to be a lot more bold with Quinn in hopes that he would catch your endless hints.
You were all around the bonfire that night and the spots were limited for some reason. Trevor rushed ahead of you and placed himself right next to Jack, the last actual seat, and tossed his legs over to lay in Jack’s lap. He motioned to you towards Quinn, and you knew what he was doing.
You walked over to Quinn, “Do you mind?”
Quinn heated up, “No! I mean… I don’t mind. You can sit.”
You breathed out a laugh and shook your head as you sat down in his lap. You grabbed his hands and put them around your waist and leaned back against him.
“You’re quite the comfortable seat, Quintin! Ten out of ten, would recommend to a friend,” you said.
“I try,” Quinn said back.
You looked over at Jack with an almost pleading look in your eyes. You would back off if he really wanted you to. Trevor smacked Jack’s shoulder to make him look at you. Jack sighed, but gave you a slight nod. What you didn’t catch was Jack giving the same nod to Quinn.
“Hey, do you two want to head inside and grab some beers?” Jack asked, directing his question to you and Quinn.
You hopped off Quinn’s lap and made your way inside with him to the kitchen.
“You didn’t have to come,” Quinn said. “I can handle the beers and I got you some Smirnoffs that I can–”
“Quinn!” you cut him off.
Quinn turned around and looked at you confused.
“You called me Quinn,” he said. “You haven’t called me Quinn all summer.”
You stepped closer to him, “Tell me you’ve caught on to what Jack and Trevor are doing.”
Quinn smiled and took a step closer to you, bringing you inches apart from each other.
“I like it when you call me Quintin,” he whispered.
“And I’d like it if you kissed me,” you said boldly. “Quintin.”
Quinn didn’t waste a second. He spun you around and pushed you up against the fridge. He had one hand pressed against it and his other on your waist, slamming his lips against yours. Your hands reached up and tangled themselves into his hair, opening your mouth to let him in. It wasn’t a typical soft and slow kiss. This was rough and raw. It was filled with everything that has built up between you over the last few weeks.
You two pulled apart, breathing heavily.
“What’s it gonna take to get you to come to Vancouver for some games?” he asked breathlessly, still inches away from your lips.
“Kiss me again and I’ll go anywhere for you,” you said.
He did. You didn’t think it was possible for the kiss to get even hotter, but you two needed each other. Bad.
“What’s it going to take to get you to go out on a date with me before you go back to Cali?”
“Kiss me again and I’m yours.”
You heard the door open and you two quickly pulled apart. It was Jack and Trevor.
“We were wondering why it was taking you two ten minutes to grab a few beers,” Trevor smirked. “Now I see why.”
Your and Quinn’s faces turned bright red. Quinn ran a hand through his hair and you tried to fix yours as well.
“We were just–”
“LA LA LA LA LA I don’t wanna hear it!” Jack cut you off. “Just don’t do it in front of me.”
You two moved out of the way and let him grab the drinks.
“Have fun you two!” Trevor called out as him and Jack made their way back outside.
“Not too much fun! I expect to see you both back out here tonight!” Jack shouted.
“Don’t listen to him! Have a lot of fun!”
You tilted your head down and stifled a laugh, “Who do you want to listen to?”
Quinn moved back in front of you and closed the space between you.
“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Trevor.”
“Yeah? You gonna kiss me like that again, Quintin?” you teased. “Or do you wanna go up stairs for some… extracurricular activities?”
“I vote the second one.”
“Good,” you said, biting your lip and running your fingers through his hair. “Lead the way.”

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the boys agreed to a slow and lazy sunday with the first day of ntdp practice tomorrow and no one wanted to be too bent out of shape. drew and aram's voices were the only ones filling the living room as they argued over mario kart together while everyone else just tuned them out. will was splayed across one of the chairs mindlessly scrolling through his phone when someone nudged his leg.
the blonde's gaze found ryan's whose eyes were wide with disbelief. "what?" will mumbled as ryan flipped his phone so his friend could see what made him look so surprised.
his screen was a photo of will and samy hughes standing next to one another at the beach with wide smiles. not understanding ryan's shock, will raised his eyebrow in confusion.
"you know samy hughes?" ryan finally got out. his words caught the attention of the rest of the guys sitting around them. their heads spun in will and ryan's direction, waiting for a response.
"uh..yeah? you guys didn't know that?" will wondered, gazing at everyone else.
"no? how do you know her? do you know luke, jack, and quinn too?" ryan continued, excitement now in his voice.
"we're family friends. we grew up together. i grew up skating with her brothers," will had to laugh. he for sure thought it was common knowledge that their families were close and spent every summer together since they were babies.
"you're lying," ryan countered, disbelief on all of his features.
"no, i'm not. you see the picture. that's obviously me," the blonde chuckled while the rest of the guys started crowding around to see the other pictures ryan had dug up from mrs. smith's facebook account.
"why on earth would you keep this information from us?" aram muttered.
"i didn't know you guys didn't know. i dunno. it's not that big of a deal," will shrugged some, falling back into his chair.
"not a big deal? are you serious? you're family friends with some of the best hockey players in this country," ryan exasperated.
this was quite amusing to will. sure, he knew how popular the hughes family was, but it never really mattered to him and he never really thought about it until now. he's always just hung out with them every summer and that was so normal for will that he didn't realize it was a big deal to other people.
"wait, ann arbor is like..thirty minutes from here. do you think we'll ever run into samy?" drew exclaimed after the realization. a few of the other guy's faces lit up too and they all looked to will for an answer.
"uh..i don't know? maybe?" the boy shrugged. he didn't really know what samy did during the school year besides go to school and play soccer.
"wait. do you think we can meet her because you know her?" ryan's head popped back up.
"erm..i don't know. maybe?" will mumbled.
"what do you mean maybe?" gabe raised his eyebrow and suddenly will felt like some teacher with kids surrounding him waiting for answers like the guys were surrounding him with wide eyes at the idea of meeting samy hughes.
"i mean..we're close, but not that close. she hung around with grace a lot, so i don't really know how she'd feel about a bunch of guys wanting to hang out with her," will shrugged again.
"dude, you know samy hughes and grew up with her and you're telling us she doesn't wanna hang out with you?" aram deadpanned.
the blonde rolled his eyes and huffed out a sigh, “okay, i’ll ask, chill out.” the guys grinned, pumping their fists at the idea of meeting samy.
will immediately got a response after sending a brief text samy’s way. she was very much up to the idea and agreed to talk to her mom about letting them drive down to ann arbor for the day. after some more final arrangements, will, gabe, ryan, drew, and aram were all stuffed into a car together driving the 30 minutes to samy’s house.
the entire car was filled with excitement and chatter as they discussed samy and her brothers. will just kept to himself, still thinking how amusing all of this was and how much these guys were simping over samy.
they rolled into the driveway and will spun around in the driver’s seat, “just don’t be too weird, okay? don’t make her uncomfortable.”
“roger that, smitty,” ryan teased making everyone snicker but will. the five boys clamored out of the car and followed their friend up to the front porch, letting will do the honors of knocking.
some footsteps could be heard until the front door swung open and a very smiley samy stood before the five boys. all of them but will suddenly became shy under the girl’s bright smile. “will!” the girl exclaimed and immediately pulled the blonde into a tight hug.
“hey hughesy,” will chuckled as he squeezed her back. the two embracing missed the looks that came from will’s friends as they watched the interaction unfold.
“come on in. jeez, i can’t believe you’re gonna be in michigan for the next two years with me,” samy continued talking as she led everyone into the foyer.
“i bet you wish it was grace instead,” the blonde teased making samy roll her eyes. “whatever. it’s so cool to meet some of you guys. i guess you already know who i am,” the brunette chuckled as she turned her attention to will’s friends who still stood silently and awkwardly behind them.
“it’s nice to meet you. i’m ryan, that’s gabe, drew, and aram. we kind of begged smitty to meet you,” ryan spoke up, sticking his hand out. samy giggled as she happily shook ryan’s hand.
“wow, i’ve never had fans before. it’s always been my brothers,” the girl smiled.
“don’t let the ten year old girls hear you say that,” will mumbled. samy flushed before ignoring his comment.
“is that will?” a new voice came into the mix. the boys looked up and saw mrs. hughes walking towards them with a large smile on her face. the older woman tugged her arms around will’s frame, squeezing the boy tightly much like samy did.
“hey mama el, it’s good to see you again. thanks for letting us come over,” will chuckled.
“of course, anytime. you know you’re always welcome here now that you live 30 minutes away. i know i’ll be expecting a lot of visits from you. all of you, actually. our home is your home. my boys have all been through the dev program, so we know what it’s like,” ellen smiled towards the other guys.
“i’m sure that’s the only reason why they came over is to see quinn, jack, and luke’s baby photos,” samy giggled in a teasing tone. some of their faces flushed in response.
“come on, i’ll show you guys around,” the girl started further into the house leaving the boys no other option but to follow her.
after the extensive grand tour of the hughes family home, the six sat around the deck enjoying the remaining bits of summer weather. “what are you guys most excited about for the dev program?” samy wondered, trying to get to know everyone else some more.
“probably just getting to hang with these guys all the time. we’ve all gotten pretty close already,” aram chuckled as he reached over to tussle up drew’s hair. the other boy squirmed away, quickly fixing his hair.
“new people, new place, new coaches. lots of things to start learning,” ryan added in.
“is it weird being away from home? my brothers never had to go far since we already lived here when they all did it,” samy wondered and most of the guys nodded.
“for sure, but it’ll be a good experience, you know?” ryan said and samy nodded.
“well, at least you guys have one more friendly face around here. you’re all welcome to come to my soccer games this season too,” the girl quickly beamed.
“right, i forgot you switched sides,” drew said.
“if you guys ever play with her, you better hope she’s on your team,” will cut in making samy flush and the other guys chuckled.
“uh oh, she better than you at soccer?” gabe snickered, pushing at will’s shoulder.
“she’s better at me in everything,” will nodded.
“remember that time i scored 3 goals on you and luke on the ice? ugh, i still think about that day and how you two had to pay me each $10,” samy laughed.
“don’t remind me. you cheated anyway,” the blonde crossed his arms, eyeing the girl beside him.
“i did not! you guys were just mad a girl was better than you at your own sport,” samy quickly defended herself.
“whatever. we’ll get our redemption this year,” will huffed. the girl just rolled her eyes and the two once again missed the looks from everyone else.
the entire time they’d been there it was nonstop flirting from both samy and will. they expected the two to be close, but they didn’t expect the amount of teasing and very painfully obvious to everyone but them flirting. will’s cheeks reddened anytime samy poked fun at him and they saw the way samy’s gaze lingered on the blonde when he wasn’t paying attention anymore.
no one said anything until they were back in plymouth that night. all of them kept glancing at the blonde, wondering if he’d say anything, but nothing came from him as he stretched out on the couch and started scrolling through his phone.
ryan eyes bounced from gabe’s to aram’s and then to drew’s. will didn’t realize the silence until he noticed the guys lingering by the entryway occasionally glancing at him.
“what?” the boy laughed, confused by their behavior.
“you and samy are a lot closer than you led on,” ryan started causally as he leaned down on the couch.
“i guess. she’s like a sister,” the blonde chuckled, clearly not understanding the deeper implication trying to be made. the family zone. it definitely did not look like a sibling relationship to the guys.
“a sister? you flirt with her like she isn’t,” aram finally got to the point, a teasing, shit-eating grin on his lips as he took one of the chairs.
“flirt with her? what the hell are you on about?” will grew confused.
“dude, be so serious right now. there’s no way you don’t see it,” ryan laughed.
“see what?” now will was getting frustrated with the laughter coming from his friends.
“you guys were literally flirting with one another the entire time, it was disgusting. there’s no way you haven’t had feelings for her or some shit,” aram cut in again.
“for samy? no way. we’re friends. we always have been. i could never see her like that,” the idea even made will shudder. all he had ever seen her as was another sister to get annoyed at and bother him whenever he was doing something.
“mhm,” gabe mumbled.
“jesus, you guys are so annoying. i kind of regret bringing you along,” the blonde rolled his eyes, refocusing his attention on his phone.
“you say that, but i give it a year at the most and then you’ll realize what we’ve been saying was right all along,” ryan snickered with another annoying grin. the other guys nodded in agreement.
the only thing will could do was ignore their comments because none of them were true. him and samy were like brother and sister. there were no feelings nor would there ever be.

osu!hughes sister group facetiming all 3 of her brothers in tears after her injury. like overall she’s out for a bit but she’ll be okay in the long run, but i’m just imagining her having flashbacks to a really bad injury in high school / ntdp where no one was certain she’d play hockey again and she’s just really nervous about it :(
she’s sitting in tyler’s place in his bed after getting home from the hospital and on the phone with her brothers and is in tears and tyler is just rubbing her back softly comforting her.
-
“what if it’s like my last injury?” you choke out. “it won’t be. you’re going to be okay, it’s just a sprain,” jack comforts. “yeah, you’ll be skating again in no time!” luke said.
quinn frowns, “you going to be okay tonight bub? i can get there in a couple of hours, i have a couple of days off.” you nod, “i’ll be okay.”
“alright, get some rest. tyler, call us if something happens, okay?”

Haha glad it was interesting! I have a few more but IDK if it's too relevant.
Nathan Mackinnon absolutely despises having to do media. He is sweet but very much like Cale stiff AF. He complained all the time about having to make videos for social media, but he didn't come off as rude. More so like, when asked to do one,9 he said "holy... another one?" looked around, then sighed. LOL. And it was like that all the time. Also it appeared as he was annoyed at the presenters. He said something like "some of us actually want to play hockey". Again, still really sweet to people. Just a very business-driven person. Jake Oettinger and Clayton Keller were quite friendly with each other. Also saw Crosby having a conversation with Paul Bissonnette, cute considering they used to be teammates. Paul also tried to get with Tate LOL.
There was kind of a Justin Bieber concert thing after one night, players LOVED it. Matthews is a big fan, Jenner and his wife were there dancing together, Kaprizov, McDavid (having fun for once in his life), they all just looked like fangirls singing. Also looked like fanboys watching Tate perform. They knew Greedy by heart haha. Some of them even went out to watch her but can't remember who. Also remember Connor Hellebuyck was kinda avoiding Tomas Hertl. Heard they had private issues because of a teammate of Connor.
ty for coming back!!!
nathan mackinnon - this info tracks, he is super intense and serious, all hockey all the time lol that's the dawg for ya. u gotta love him
otter & keller - they played together on the NTDP for a few years so they've been good buddies for a long time!! super cute
biz - ya him n sid get along well, sid is always very gracious w everybody. completely unsurprising that biz tried to get w tate, can't imagine the diseases on this man
biebs concert - ya him n matthews are boys! i think biebs might be a bigger fan of matthews than matthews is of biebs tbh LOL. nice that so many of them were there enjoying themselves. n ya i think it was marner and someone else who went out to watch?? maybe hertl?? someone will remember.
helle & hertl - intereesstiiinngg i'm trying to pick my brain to figure out who this teammate could be
LOVEEEE all this tea thank u anon!!!

hello, i would like to talk at you for a bit about girl!rutger and adam and the boys and girls can't be friends verse.
what if adam and rutger were still longtime best friends, but it was girl!rutger? never lived in the same place, but kept seeing each other at tournaments and CAA events and always hit it off, reflecting the same brand of goofy energy plus hard-nosed competitiveness right back at each other.
like, imagine every photo of rutger on adam's canonical instagram except rutger's a girl. rutger in a bikini floating in adam's pool. girl!rutger and adam arm in arm on the beach at CAA camp, towels draped over their shoulders. girl!rutger at the baggage claim, just a stupid little picture adam posted when he picked her up at the airport one time, but somehow years later it's still in his saved stories.
adam's friends are like "are you hitting that or what?" and adam's horrified. "she's my best friend!" adam protests. ok, his buddy says, then give me the inside track, you can be my wingman. and adam's like no, absolutely not, don't talk about rutger like that.
meanwhile rutger rolls her eyes whenever her friends ask if anything's going on with her and adam. "boys and girls can be friends," rutger huffs, swishing her ponytail over her shoulder. rutger considers herself pretty enlightened on that front. she can have a best friend who's a boy. she's cool like that. maybe other girls can't be friends with boys without falling for them, but rutger can.
and rutger already has a boyfriend, anyway. cutter's great! they're together all the time. and yeah, he's always hovering and draping his arm around her when the ntdp plays the steel and she and adam get a few minutes to catch up on the concourse afterwards, but it's not like cutter has anything to worry about. adam's just a friend.
once they're off at at college, long distance is hard though! like, rutger and adam have basically never lived in the same place but every time they see each other at a camp or a tournament or a hughes party it's like they pick up right where they left off. but cutter's not like that. now that he's in boston and rutger's in michigan, talking on the phone is so awkward. rutger keeps accidentally missing cutter's calls and forgetting to call back, and then he's mad the next time they talk, and that makes rutger less likely to call him, and it's just a whole big thing.
college is, like, so much fun though. it's great to finally be on a team with adam, and their teammates are awesome, and living in the dorms is fun, and there's just always so much fun stuff going on! cutter's just kind of... a distraction from everything else in her life that seems so much more immediate.
they'll probably straighten everything out at world juniors. they just need some time together, right? and that's exactly how it works out! it takes a couple of days but pretty soon she and cutter are right back to normal. everything's easier when they can just, like, make out in the back of the charter bus instead of talking.
wjc is such an intense little bubble. even with seamus rooming with her and gavin and duker down the hall, michigan seems so far away. after a few days rutger's not even texting her other umich teammates. adam's not texting her either. but whatever, it's different for him going to team canada than it is for rutger to just go down the road to usa hockey. she gets it.
she does look over at the other side of the ice during warmups before their game against canada. she's not, like, going to distract adam if he's focusing or whatever. but if he wants to say hi, she wouldn't want to miss it, is all.
"looking for someone?" cutter plows to a stop in front of the bench, blocking her view.
rutger plays it off like she’s not startled. she picks up the closest water bottle and squirts it at cutter’s jersey. "checking out bedard, obvs."
“yeah, sure.” he skates away and rutger hops over the boards, snags a puck, and wires it over trey’s helmet, so it bangs into the glass after missing the net entirely.
---
a couple of weeks after world juniors, cutter texts her. he’s been doing some thinking. long distance isn’t working for him. maybe they should take a break.
rutger immediately facetimes him, indignant. “you’re breaking up with my over text????”
“oh so now you pick up the phone,” cutter says.
“i…” rutger stammers. “fuck off.”
“have fun with adam.” cutter hangs up before rutger can protest that adam’s her friend.
rutger looks furiously around her dorm room. where’s seamus when she needs her? she storms down the hallway to gavin and johnny’s room and dramatically bursts through the door. “cutter and i broke up.”
“aw, babe.” seamus immediately gets up from gavin’s bed to give her a hug. “i’m sorry.”
“shocker,” gavin says.
“be nice.” seamus swats him. “we’re mourning.”
“what?” rutger demands.
gavin shrugs. “just didn’t seem like you liked him that much.”
“of course i liked him! it was almost our two year anniversary!” rutger’s lip starts to tremble. it feels like she failed.
“what’s up?” rutger hears adam’s voice as he walks into the room.
“rut and cut broke up,” gavin says, indifferently.
a tear trickles down the side of rutger’s nose. their nicknames always sounded so good together.
adam makes a sympathetic noise and offers her an arm. rutger gratefully wraps her arms around him and sniffles against his t-shirt.
behind her, gavin snickers.
“stop laughing at me,” rutger says miserably into adam's chest.
adam pats her back reassuringly. maybe she'll live. maybe this isn't so bad. maybe it will be nice not to worry about cutter anymore. and there’s so much else going on! the second half of the season is so much fun, and she and adam are finally playing on a line together and they’re killing it, just like they always knew they could. now she can focus on hockey. now she can go out and really dance with guys, not just her teammates. now she can...
rutger picks up her head. "hey, now i can hook up."
adam stops patting her back.
rutger flounces over to the bed and snuggles up next to seamus. "who should i hook up with?"
seamus pets her hair. "maybe wait a little bit?"
"or not." rutger pokes gavin. "who's moyle's lacrosse friend?"
gavin snorts. rutger makes him and johnny talk through the merits of the entire men's lacrosse team. she doesn't notice when adam leaves.
---
lacrosse players are... well, they're okay. they're fine. rutger hooks up with a couple of them, at a couple of different parties. the second one is ryan, or maybe justin. he gropes her tits like he doesn't remember they're attached to the rest of her. rutger shrugs her neck away from his mouth and straightens her bra out and tells him she's going to find her friends. maybe she should try football players.
she snaps the elastic out of her ponytail and redoes it as she walks down the stairs of the senior house. adam's watching her from the beer pong room. his eyebrows pull together when he sees her expression. "everything okay?"
rutger points at the solo cup in his hand. "can i have a sip?"
"take it." adam hands the cup over. he drapes an arm around her. rutger steps out of her heels so she's a little shorter, and leans against his side.
---
everything falls into place as winter turns into spring. holtzy gets healthy, frankie gets healthy, and they go on a tear through the playoffs. rutger makes out with a few more people at a few more parties, but mostly it's good to be with the team.
after the big 10 tournament, rutger gets pleasantly buzzed on watermelon truly. she trips going down the porch steps at the senior house and grabs adam's elbow. "fucking heels." she straightens up, shifting her feet in her shoes so her toes aren't so pinched. "ugh, i'm going to have blisters." the heels are so cute, though, and they make her legs look about a million miles long under her little skirt. worth it.
adam crouches down a little. "want a ride?"
"oh, for real?" rutger swings a leg over his back. "awesome!"
adam straightens up and she wriggles into a decent piggyback position. he tucks his hands under her knees and starts to walk them back toward south quad. the night smells like springtime trees, everything blooming. rutger rests her cheek on adam's shoulder.
adam carries her all the way into the lobby and leans forward so she can reach the elevator button. as the slow dorm elevator makes its way up to their floor, rutger tries to slide off his back. "i think i can make it from here."
as soon as she says it, she stumbles over her heels on the dismount. adam catches her around the waist, and impulsively kisses her.
rutger's not expecting it and the kiss only sort of lands on her mouth. it's bad.
adam lets her go. he's looking at her, aghast. "sorry, i..."
rutger's aghast too. she and adam are winners. they can't have a bad kiss. that's just not who they are. "we can do better," rutger says, firmly, and kisses him for real.
the elevator doors open. they close again. adam backs her against the elevator wall as the slow descent to the lobby begins. this is great! why hasn't she thought about kissing adam before? he's actually a really good kisser! rutger smacks blindly at the elevator buttons, trying to get back to their floor while adam's tongue is still in her mouth.
by the time rutger's lying on her back with her tiny little skirt flipped up and adam's tongue tracing a path up the inside of her thigh, it occurs to her that maybe cutter was right about some stuff after all. well, whatever. cutter broke up with her. she can hook up with adam. it's not like adam's in love with her.
---
rutger thinks that adam and his tongue make for an ideal friends with benefits situation. because she and adam are friends, so this must be friends with benefits. boys and girls can be friends! rutger is determined to prove it! friends can hook up! even if it's like every weekend, and at the frozen four, and rutger isn't hooking up with anybody else! even (especially) if they haven't really talked about it! every time rutger thinks maybe she should clarify that this is absolutely definitely friends with benefits, she gets distracted by adam's tongue and she decides that there's no reason to disrupt a perfectly delightful status quo where her best friend also loves going down on her.
i want all of this to come to a head when gavin and seamus hook up and it immediately blows up in everyone's faces. luca and johnny are team "how could you do this to seamus" and gavin expects adam and rutger to have his back, which rutger absolutely does.
"like, how were you supposed to know she thought it was a whole thing?" rutger hangs her head over the edge of gavin's bed and kicks her feet up against the wall. "like, you can hook up and still be friends," rutger pronounces authoritatively. "it doesn't have to change anything." she looks upside down at adam, sitting in johnny's desk chair on the other side of the room. "right, adam?"
"...yeah." adam says slowly. "i guess so." the legs of the chair scrape against the floor as he stands up abruptly. "i'm gonna... go... find luca, i guess."
anyway i don't want to get into act 3 where everybody's sad. eventually girl!rutger realizes that clinging to the principle of boys and girls can be friends is much less satisfying than admitting that a best friend who you also have amazing sex with is actually just a boyfriend. idk how it all goes down but there's definitely a scene where a chastened rutger shows up on adam's doorstep, full of tears and dramatics.

xmas with will omg 🤭🤭
like imagine will and daisy drinking hot cocoa and watching xmas movies on xmas eve. on xmas day, they put on their puffers & go ice skating, they eat so much they land themselves in a food coma which consists of them sitting on the couch watching even more xmas movies, they bake cookies, & do gingerbread houses together
the smiths and the perreaults have xmas dinner together at the perreault’s house back in michigan (they just kept their homes from when will and gabe were in the ntdp)
they blast xmas music and have xmas-themed couples competitions with gabe and his gf
their fave xmas show to watch is dash and lily - they plan on going to nyc & going to every single place they went in the show (if you haven’t watched the show, go watch it. it’s my fave show ever i love it - especially because the main character is asian i love some good on-screen representation!!)
when they give out their presents will & daisy bought each other like 5 million presents but every single time before holiday shopping they’re like “let’s not go overboard on the presents” but they go overboard every. single. time.
they go outside and make snow angels & have snowball fights + make snowmen
there’s a christmas village nearby so they go shopping there and see all the lights & it’s just so cute

nye traditions - luke hughes
word count: 2,469
a/n: happy new year everybody! first post in like, ages. so please, enjoy this wholesome lukey content because I love it and him with all my heart🫶🏼
-
“so you’re telling me if we don’t win today, that i don’t get my new year’s eve kiss?” the shock was evident in luke’s voice, and you couldn’t help but giggle at how worried he had gotten over something as little as the new year’s eve kiss. “that’s just cruel, y/n/n, absolutely cruel,” he then added on as he finished packing up his usa backpack through the phone screen.
shrugging your shoulders you slumped further into the white sheets of your hotel bed. “figured you could use a little more motivation, lukey, that’s all,” you answered with a sweet smile. “plus, if you wanna kiss me for the fifth year in a row you’ve got to work for it, hughes.”
his eyes rolled while he barely glanced back at his phone to see your smiling face. “if i don’t get to kiss you at midnight then i guess that means i have to kiss duker,” the captain then smiled, his blue eyes glancing towards something out of frame.
“absolutely not! you will not be kissing anybody but y/n!” dylan then screeched, his face popping into the screen to glare at you. “y/n m/n l/n, i swear to god if you’re not in our hotel room by eleven fifty tonight i’m going to hunt you down and drag you up here to kiss hughesy, because i will not be doing it.”
humming you just nodded your head softly at the two, “beat finland first and then we’ll talk.”
luke’s former roommate rolled his eyes before disappearing off screen once more. mumbling something to your boyfriend of five years as he went. “yeah, yeah that works,” he spoke, “i’ll just be a couple more minutes and then i’ll meet you down there.”
once his attention was fully back on the phone screen your smile grew even larger on your face, “hi moosey.”
“hi baby,” he mused, hand running through the curls that were beginning to fall on his forehead. “‘ve gotta head out soon, so only couple more minutes with you.”
you let out a blissful sigh while you sat back up against the headboard. “that’s okay, love. i have to start getting ready pretty soon anyway. your mom and i are leaving for lunch in an hour and i haven’t done anything to get ready yet. too busy staring at my boy.”
the red that painted the apples of the nineteen year old’s cheeks was your favorite color of the shade. “oh stop it, honey. there’s no need for flattery when you already broke my heart by saying if we don’t win i don’t get a new year’s eve kiss.” his bottom lip was jutted out just barely as his eyes met yours once more.
your e/c eyes rolled as you stared at the youngest brother who was almost never over dramatic. “lukey, honey, just worry about the game. you’ll get your kiss, i promise you.” your words instantly caused a smile to blossom on his face. “now, i’ll see you after the game, okay? i love you, good luck.”
“i love you too, y/n/n, and thank you,” he answered while reaching forward and grabbing his phone. “i’ll see you there.”
smiling you nodded, “i’ll be the one cheering the loudest in the stands.”
“bye, darling. i love you,” luke promised one final time silently waiting for you to do the same.
there wasn’t even a second of hesitation before you answered:
“i love you too, lukey.” and with that he gave you a half wave and his toothy smile before he ended the call. leaving you waiting not so patiently for four o’clock to see him dressed in his blue usa jersey.
there was a frantic knocking on ellen’s hotel door at eleven forty-five. a confused look was shared between the two of you before you pushed yourself off the couch and slowly started making your way to investigate. “i don’t think that i know anybody that would be coming to the door this late,” ellen said while giving you a skeptical look.
“it won’t hurt to look,” you answered while already pressing your upper body against the white wood, eye peeking through the peephole. “it’s dylan?” while you didn’t intend for the statement to come out as a question, your bewilderment was hard to miss.
smiling and shaking her head, ellen got up from her spot on the couch and joined you over at the door. “somebody is clearly eager to get you with luke,” she teased as you pulled the door open to meet the michigan forward face to face.
“duker,” you sigh while leaning against the doorframe, “you said i had until eleven fifty! i don’t want to impose on the team more than i’m already going to be.”
with in seconds dylan was shaking his head to disagree with your words. “i don’t care, none of us care! i just need you to come with me. right now or luke’s going to have a fit, and if luke has a fit that means i’m going to have a fit. and if i have a fit gavin and rutger will have a fit. and then suddenly every single michigan hockey boy will be throwing a fit because mom and dad didn’t kiss at midnight on new years eve.”
after the rambling mess also known as dylan duke had subsided, you slowly turned your head to share a look with your future mother-in-law. “i, uh,-”
“well, you better get going, ‘mom,’” ellen teased with a knowing smile, “we can’t have any of our boys throwing fits because my son didn’t get his new year’s eve kiss.” a flush covered your own cheeks as you gently nodded your head to agree with her. “i’ll see you after sweetheart, next year even.”
shaking your head the smile grew on your face once more, “i’ll see you next year, ellen.” you then turned your attention to dylan and pushed yourself off the wall. “alright, duker, let’s go find my boy.”
the elevator ride up to the sixth floor where all the players were lodging, as well as celebrating the new year, probably last about two minutes, but to you it felt like a century. the first reason being because of how excited you were to see luke for more than five minutes after a game. the second reason being dylan’s head was dropped against your shoulder, eyes closed and drool just barely starting to fall from his mouth and to the ntdp sweatshirt you were wearing. when the elevator dinged you shrugged your shoulder to wake the boy up.
“am i going to the left or right, duker?” you asked while he began to rub his eyes with his right hand, and his mouth with his left.
“right, we’re all in some little like conference room thing,” he explained while pushing past you and immediately going to the right. “don’t waste another second, y/n/n, it’s almost eleven fifty-five. i know that luke is having a heart attack right now.” you silently saulted the boy as you followed behind him, thinking about how the entire usa team was about to watch you and luke have your new years eve kiss. “look how i found!” dylan yelled while the two of you broke the threshold of the conference room.
without fail, every pair of eyes had fallen on to you, but the only person you cared about was luke. your body slowly gravitated towards the six foot two curly haired boy, only to be stopped by rutger jumping up from his chair and hugging you: “mom! gavin look! mom made it!”
you hugged the boy back, eyes locking with luke’s as he began to tap on his wrist. “of course i made it, rutger, i wasn’t about to leave my boy hanging after you guys won today. we’ll catch up in a little bit, okay? right now i have to go be with my actual boyfriend.” grumbling under his breath the freshman let go of you just barely enough for you slip out of his arms and right into luke’s.
“hi honey,” he smiled down at you, right hand slipping into your left. “wanna step into the hallway for a couple minutes?” instantly you were nodding your head, already knowing that luke didn’t want to kiss you in front of everybody if he didn’t have to. not that he didn’t want to, because he gladly would, but when he hadn’t been able to spend much time alone with you he wanted to take the chances he could.
“i thought you’d never ask,” you smiled, slowly backing up towards the door you had just walked through, tugging his hand as you went. “did you guys have a nice team dinner, lu?” you asked once you were through the door and looking back at him.
he shrugged his shoulders while leaning back against the wall and pulling you in front of him, and his left hand up to his mouth to give it a gentle kiss. “as good as team dinner can be i guess. food was good, just dead from the game,” he answered, lips just barely brushing against the skin of your hand before he kissed the metal of your promise ring.
“i already kind of assumed that,” you smiled while wrapping your arms around his neck, “dylan fell asleep on my shoulder in the elevator.” luke’s mouth dropped open with a small laugh, his hands finding home on your hip and the small of your back. “he was drooling even.”
“of course he was,” luke mumbled, “i’m sorry, honey. i told him i’d go and get you, or just go down there and be with you but duker had insis-”
luke was cut off by the sound of the countdown that had began to take storm of the makeshift party room:
“ten!”
you couldn’t help the way the blush again to paint your cheeks red. even with this being the fifth year of kissing luke.
“nine!”
luke’s goofy smile was spread across his face ear from ear as he stared down at you. his lips just barely cracked from being chapped.
“eight!”
unbeknown to the both of you, dylan, gavin, and rutger were making their way to the door way.
“seven!”
“i love you.”
“six!”
“i love you too.”
“five!”
your hand just barely started to creep up towards luke’s hair, barely running through it.
“four!”
luke pulled you in closer. your body pressed completely up against his.
“three!”
“nother year with you, y/n/n.”
“two!”
“another year with you, lukey.”
“one!”
you were pulling luke down to meet you halfway, standing on your tip-toes in order to mesh your lips with his. his hand on your hip gave you a gentle squeeze, trying to help steady you, the hand on the small of your back pushing you in closer to him. all while you couldn’t help but start to smile against his lips. the kiss suddenly became clashing teeth as he couldn’t fight the smile on his face either.
“happy new year, darling,” he whispered into your ear as he pulled you into his chest to keep you wrapped in his arms.
humming you pressed a kiss against his clothed chest, “happy new year, love.”
“YES! MOM AND DAD KISSED! MOM AND DAD KISSED!”
the sound of cheering had both you and looking and turning your attention towards the doorway, dylan, gavin, and rutger’s head just peeking out one on top of the other. both gavin’s and dylan’s cheeks were flushed pink, embarrassed rutger had gotten them caught, but he could care less. he was all smiles as he stared happily at the two of you.
pulling away from luke you earned what sounded like a whimper before you slipped your hand into his to walk over to the three. “just because of this little stunt, i do believe it’s bedtime for you and gavin, rutger.”
“but mom,” gavin pouted while fully stepping into the hallway, “how are we supposed to go to sleep when you can’t even tuck us in like you do at school.”
rutger nodded his head to agree, “lukey’s been tucking us in, but he’s not good at it without you. and he doesn’t give us our forehead kisses.”
“you never asked for them!” luke interjected, trying to make sure he didn’t come off as the bad guy in this situation.
you shushed him, your attention back fully on the two freshmen you had taken in this year. “if you guys wanted your forehead kisses all you had to do was ask - but straight to bed after, deal?”
“deal!” gavin and rutger said in perfect unison.
smiling you leaned forward and pressed a kiss first to gavin’s head, as he had been the more patient of the two. “goodnight gavin, i love you. get some sleep tonight, you deserve it after that game.” he happily smiled back at you as you turned your attention to rutger. “rutger, rutger, rutger, what am i going to do with you?”
“pack me up in your suitcase when you and luke move out to new jersey?” he suggested with a sweet smile.
shaking your head you laughed, “i don’t think so buddy.” you then grabbed his cheeks and kissed his forehead. “goodnight rutger, i love you. you had a great game, great goal. i’m so proud of you.”
“did you hear that gavin? y/n said she’s proud of me!” and just like that him and gavin were making the trek towards their shared room, all while dylan shared at you longingly.
“come on duker, get over here for your forehead kiss,” you smiled, already knowing that’s why he was suddenly gloomy. dylan planted himself where rutger was previously standing right in front of you, leaning his forehead towards you for more access. laughing you leaned the rest of the way and pressed a kiss to the crown of his head. “goodnight duker, i love you. you played so good today, now go and get some sleep. put some neosporin on your cuts.”
luke wrapped an arm around your waist, head dropping against your shoulder. “i’ll be in soon, dyl, just gonna walk, y/n/n back to her room first.” nodding his head duker was the last of your children to disappear back down the hallway to his hotel room leaving you and luke alone once more. he pressed a loving kiss against the side of your neck before talking, “you know, when we have kids in the future we’re gonna have the bedtime routine down because of our first three children.”
“bedtime routine, and three babysitters we won’t have to pay a single dime to after having to put up with them for the past year.”

Imagine none of his friends knew his sister played basketball and every time they would come over during his NTDP years she was always away. So they finally get to meet her when she goes into the final four. They’re speechless courtside seats
I find this hilarious because they do have photos of her hanging up around the house and Trevor knows he mentioned her at least once. But it's kind of like an out of sight out of mind type thing. She was never around so they never meet her.
But imagine their shock when they find out about Nico Zegras.
"Dude why didn't you ever tell us you had another sister!"
"What are you talking about I totally did?"
Of course they're speechless watching her dominate on the court. They're sitting with their jaws on the floor. The gophers happen to win and go to championships.
Also imagine how annoyed Nico would be when she wakes up one morning to 5x more followers on instagram because all of her brothers friends and fans followed her and started liking her posts.

this popped in my head and you felt like the perfect person to share this thought with as a jack and trev girl!
like imagine being in high school at the same time as jack and trevor and like going to Plymouth high with them. like your just minding your own business in algebra or something and then all of a sudden those two walk in and raise hell.
like that must've been a fun time to go to Plymouth with jack and trevor and the other ntdp kids.
🥰🫶🏻
AH, you know me so well. I’m fucking honored to be considered the Jack and Trevor girl. 🥹 those two are forever my sweet boys. God, they would’ve been the iconic duo in high school. The things I would do to have gotten to experience those two and their antics throughout high school.

-EARLY MARCH '23-
“Y/N! Hurry up!” Your oldest brother, Trevor, called out. You let out groan before answering him.
“You said 7:30, it’s 7:20. Calm down!” You yelled, rolling your eyes slightly as you slipped your shoes on. You were currently in Anaheim visiting your brother during your spring break of your freshman year of college, and the two were about to head out to drive around the city and grab something to eat.
“Finally.” Trevor said as you walked down the stairs, Jamie laughing from his place on the couch in the living room.
“You’re so dramatic, it’s actually insane.” You whispered before biding your goodbyes to the Canadian boy and heading outside the house, your brother following behind you.
“So, what’s been up with you?” Trevor asked a couple of minutes later, the two of you now on the road as music played through the speaker. “How’s college? Is Umich everything everyone talks about?”
“Good, everything’s good.” You answer simply, hoping he would start talking about something other than school. The main reason being that you had a boyfriend, one you hadn’t told him about yet since your relationship was still new. But also because said boyfriend was your brother’s best friend’s brother, Luke. The two of you had known each other ever since your brother’s played in the ntdp, but you were never really friends, only meeting a couple of times.
That all changed when you started attending the University of Michigan the previous fall, and suddenly Luke was every. You kept seeing him everytime you went and left class, football games, and just around campus in general, but no words were ever exchanged, just small smiles.
But that all changed one night in early november, your sophomore friends, who you meet in your dorm building, wanting to introduce you to some of her friends, most of which happened to be in the hockey. So, you eventually found yourself sitting in the sophomore’s home, most of their friends also present. Thankfully, you had met your friend’s other girl friends before so it wasn’t too awkward, but you were the only freshman there, and they all had a special bond that you didn’t have with any of them.
Eventually you had stepped outside, sitting on the stairs of the porch to take some air. You were all alone with your thoughts until someone joined, the only familiar face you had seen that night. The two of you then started talking about everything and anything, school, your brothers, hockey, and after that night, the rest was history.
Luke asked you out on a date about three weeks later, talking everyday, meeting up during the weekends to work on homework together, going for coffee, just hanging out in his room, and much more. You had slowly became friends with the rest of his roommates, Dylan being around the most since he and Luke knew each other the most.
Now, of course your brothers knew that the two of you were friends, something that made all three of them very happy. But the both of you weren’t sure how’d they react when they’d find out, so for now, that was a detail neither of you tought was important to mention.
“How’s Luke, I haven’t talked to him in a while?”
“He’s good, busy with hockey and all.” You answered dryly, making Trevor send you a weird look, but he decided to just shrug it off. “We don’t actually like talk that much and stuff, you know, just like casual hello’s and small talks around campus.”
“Really? ‘Cause that’s not what Jack told me.” Your brother said, making you scoff a little.
“Okay, we haven’t talked that much recently.” You justified, mentally cursing yourself for even bringing that up in the first place. Trevor shot you another glance before changing the subject, now talking about what you guys should get for dinner, something you were grateful for.
Later that evening, you were sitting on the couch in Trevor and Jamie’s living room, both boys seated on either side of you. A random show they had been obsessed with recently playing on the tv as you texted Luke.
“You’re not even paying attention.” Trevor groaned as he looked over at you, wanting to see your reaction to what had just happened in the show, only to find you grinning at your phone. His voice made you look up at him, bitting your lips as you closed your phone and let it drop on your lap.
“Sorry.” You mumbled before once again trying to understand what was even happening in the show. You didn’t understand what they both found so interesting in it, so you decided to go grab a glass water quickly, leaving your phone on the couch right next to your brother.
Back in Ann Arbor, Luke was laying in his bed, his eyes half opened as his fingers ran over his keyboard. All of his other roommates fast asleep in their room since they had an early morning practice the next day. A frown formed on his face as his last text was left on read, your grey bubble disappearing.

He sent, bitting his lips as he waited for you to open his message.
Meanwhile, the sound of your phone dinging made Trevor’s eyes look over at it, he was never one to snoop around your phone, but the nickname caught his eyes. Who on earth was lemon, and why was he calling you babe? He resisted the urge to open your phone and look at the message, instead waiting until later to ask you about it.
“Who’s lemon?” He asked almost an hour later, the two of you being alone in the living as Jamie had gone to be a couple of minutes earlier. His words made your eyes grow wide as you turned to look at him, looking like a deer caught in headlights.
“Lemon?” You asked him, trying to act like you didn’t know what he was talking about.
“Yeah, lemon.”
“Lemons are fruits, Trev, didn’t know you were that dumb.” You shrugged off, your heartbeat getting quicker and quicker by the second.
“Oh, so fruits have phone now, and one of them is texting you calling you babe? That’s crazy, first I’ve heard of that being possible.” He said with a smirk as you bit your lips. Just as you were about to say something else, your phone starting ringing, lemon being the one to call you. Your phone was now on the coffee table in front of the couch, you looked over at your brother and before you even had time to reach for it, Trevor grabbed it and answered the call.
“Hello?” He said, and a gasp echoed from the speaker of the phone. “Hello?” Trevor repeated, getting a little agitated.
“Trevor?” Luke asked confused, and at the same moment, your brother’s face fell as he looked over at you.
“Hey, Lemon.” Trevor said with a smirk, another gasp from Luke was heard before the boy hung up the phone, making your brother scoff. He threw the phone at you before looking at you with an expression you couldn’t quite understand.
“You’re dating Luke?” He asked, and this time, it was your turn to scoff. You weren’t ready for Trevor to find out about your relationship, or at least not like this, and you were ready to lie as much as you need to.
“Please, you’re being delusional, Trev. Me and Luke? Never, he’s like… he’s like a brother to me.” You said, trying your best to look as relaxed and composed as you could. But Trevor didn’t believe, he was in no mean the smartest man on the planet, but he wasn’t the dumbest either.
“Right, and I am guess you’re like a sister to him?” He asked and you were quick to nod. “So, should I start calling you babe too or?”
“Babe? You think Luke called me babe? You must’ve misread whatever it was that you saw.”
“Sure I did, Y/N/N, sure.” He smirked before focusing back on the TV. You weren’t sure if he believed you or not, but that didn’t matter at the moment, as long as the two of you didn’t talk about it anymore, you didn’t mind what he believed.
“Does he treat you good?” He asked after a couple of minutes of not so comfortable silence, making you let out a groan.
“Trev, Luke and I aren’t―”
“Y/N/N, don’t lie to me, okay? I am not that stupid. Luke’s a good guy, if he makes you happy then I don’t care. You’re eighteen, you can make your own decisions, but I swear if he ever hurts you in anyway I’ll―”
“He won’t. He’s not like that, Trev, and you know it. He brings spiders outside instead of killing them, he’s a munchkin.” You explained, making Trevor roll his eyes. After that, the subject was drop, and it was like a weight was lifted off your shoulders. You wouldn’t have to hid anymore, well at least no in front of your brother.
~
“Hi.” You spoke as you answered the incoming phone call from your boyfriend the next morning. It was almost 10, meaning Trevor had left for practice, and Jamie was probably still in bed.
“I am sorry.” Luke said straight away, his voice shaky a bit. His tone and words made you laugh a little before letting yourself fall backwards from your sideways laying position, your back now resting against the soft mattress in the guest room of your brother’s shared home with his best friend.
“Lulu, calm down. He’s fine with it. Threaten to beat you up if you hurt me, but other than that, he doesn’t mind.” You explained, recalling your talk with your eldest brother the previous night. A loud sigh echoed through your phone from Luke, making you giggle a bit.
“So, I won’t have to go into hiding when he comes during the summer?” The youngest hughes questions, making you giggle once more.
“You’re so dramatic, bubs.” You laughed. On the other end of the line, Luke was sitting in his car, one that he was finally able to use since he now lived in a house and had a place to park, unlike the previous year, their practice finishing mere minutes before. He had a soft smile on his face as your laugh rang through his ears, a sound he loved so much.
“I miss you.” He stated as your laughter died down, a smile of your own appearing on your face.
“I miss you, too, lemon.”

SPRING BREAK 2018 (JUNIOR YEAR)
it was your favorite time of year: spring break. quinn was home from college for a few days, and the ntdp boys had a few days off from practice (a schedule that you purposely made quinn choose said days off to come home).
you bounded down the stairs of your house at eight in the morning on the day quinn was finally coming home. ellen was busy cooking breakfast when she heard a thud noise and your “i’m okay!”
you quickly got up and continued to run into the kitchen, holding onto the corner of the wall to whip yourself into the room. ellen was smiling an amused smile at you, her daughter. legal or not; you are her daughter
“well, good morning,” ellen laughed.
“QUINN IS COMING HOME!” you screamed, bouncing up and down as you did. ellen laughed, “yes, he is. per your request i believe?”
you smiled at her deviously, “request, demand, threat, whatever you want to call it, it got him to come! quinny’s coming home!”
you were literally spinning and jumping around the kitchen in excitement. while you were spinning, and mama hughes was cooking, some heavy footsteps were heard from upstairs. you ran over to the bannister to look up at whoever was coming. it was a very messy haired jack— a grumpy one at that.
“it is 8am, sissy. why are you screaming?” he groaned.
“quinn is coming!” you bounced.
jack, while excited to see his older brother, was not as excited to be woken up at 8am by your shouts.
“did someone fall earlier?” you heard a sleepy trevor call out.
“i’ll give you one guess,” jack said. trevor appeared next to him, rubbing his eyes, “y/n?”
“i don’t fall that much!” you protested.
jack and trevor shared a look before looking back at you, both wearing “seriously?” faces.
“y/n, baby, darling, sissy-“
“you can’t call me sissy,” you interrupted trevor.
“right, sorry,” he stuttered. “you are a danger to yourself at all times. jack has first aid kits not for him, but for you, in his car and backpack.”
“you do, too!” jack swatted him. “quinn still has one, and he doesn’t even live here anymore!”
hearing quinn’s name made you excited again, “jack! why aren’t you as excited as i am?!”
jack groaned and slammed his head into his best friend’s shoulder, “i am! i’m just not going to jump and fall on my ass over seeing my brother.”
trevor laughed and patted jack’s head teasingly, “there, there, hughesy. don’t worry! she’s only going to get louder.”
while you skipped back to the kitchen where ellen was, trevor was smiling at you as he watched from the top of the banister. jack elbowed his ribcage, getting a groan out of him.
“what was that for?!”
“be a man! if you like her, just ask her out!”
trevor folded his arms on the rail and semi-slammed his head onto his arms, “i can’t just do that! do you remember when she had her first breakup?!”
“technically… i was her first break up,” jack muttered. trevor lifted his head up with a bewildered look on his face, “she’s basically your sister?”
“it was before she moved in, okay! we lasted a month so it barely counts.”
“right… well… okay- um,” trevor stuttered. “i was talking about her breakup at the end of september. she called quinn crying and he drive for hours to be with her! he’s not just basically her brother, he’s her best friend. and i just don’t think i’m good enough for her. and i’m certainly not good enough for his approval.”
“you don’t want my approval?” jack asked. trevor shot him a look. “fair enough. y/n and quinn have a special kind of relationship.”
while trevor and jack were talking, you were summoned by mama hughes to help her so that you weren’t running around (and falling) anymore. quinn wasn’t due to arrive til later that afternoon, and the world simply didn’t stop for him. there was still breakfast to be made, and the other three boys in the house wanted to go to the lake.
you planned on waiting around the house for quinn instead of going out, but ellen promised to call as soon as he arrived. trevor tossed you over his shoulder and carried you out to the boat when you still weren’t sure.
“trevor!” you protested. you began to bang your fists on his back, “put me down, zegras!”
needless to say, he did not put you down until you got on the boat. you flipped your hair over to get it out of your face really quick when trevor plopped you down on a seat before lunging at him. trevor had this dopey look on his face. he was clearly loving the physical banter you two had going right now. you? you weren’t sure. you were mad because you wanted to wait for quinn, but suddenly being with trevor was the only thing on your mind.
jack nudged luke for him to look at the two of you. your bad mood subsided at that shit eating grin that covered trevor’s face. you felt yourself slipping into a smile, and regrettably, trevor spotted it before you could change your facial expression.
“there’s that y/n smile i know and love!” trevor point out. you glared your eyes and scrunched your nose at him, “and there’s that y/n grouchy face i know and love!”
you smirked and took a step closer to him, “oh yeah?”
he took a step, “yeah.”
you were inches apart. both smirks and grins faded away and replaced with looks of longing. it felt like the rest of the world slipped away and all that was left was you two standing close together, gazes switching between each other’s eyes and lips.
then your phone rang.
you and trevor awkwardly stepped back from each other as you reached into your pocket to answer your phone.
“is he here?!” you practically shouted.
“come see for yourself,” you heard quinn’s voice say.
your eyes lit up and you got all bouncy again, “quintin!” the three boys on the boat laughed at your sudden excitement, and they could hear quinn laughing, too. “guys! he’s home! we have to turn back!”
there was no arguing with you over that. plus, jack and luke would be lying of they said they didn’t want to see their brother. while his absence doesn’t effect you guys as much as it did when he left at 15, it still has an impact. on you especially.
you almost tripped running off the boat, but you caught yourself at the last second. you sprinted from the dock back to the house as fast you could. the second you opened up the door, ellen called out, “in the kitchen!”
you squealed as you continued to run into the kitchen and straight into quinn’s arms, “quinny!”
quinn scooped you up, spun you around in a hug, and placed a kiss to your forehead when he set you down.
“god, i missed you,” quinn admitted, tucking you into his side again. “i’m taking you with me next time, i refuse to leave you again.”
“i wish,” you laughed, not removing your hands from around his waist.
the boys walked in next, and jack and luke immediately smiled when they saw their brother. trevor was smiling, too, but mostly at his friends being happy. not that he wasn’t happy to see quinn, because he was, they just didn’t know each other that well yet.
there is a standard rule around the hughes household and company— if you’re hugging quinn, you are not letting go until you are ready. you don’t care who yearns for your or quinn’s attention. you don’t let go, and he always keeps at least a hand on you in response. this meant that jack and luke had to one arm hug their brother from the side, but none of them minded.
after everyone caught up and all ate lunch, you all decided that eating s’mores by the campfire was the move for the night. however, there wasn’t any s’more supplies, so you and ellen were voted to go to the store.
back at the house, trevor was buzzing with nervousness. he kept wringing his hands and tugging at his lip, struggling to figure out a way to do this. all he had to do was ask to talk to quinn, how hard could it be?
extremely hard. very hard at best. terrifying at worst. trevor was feeling more of the latter.
jack nudged him, “what is wrong with you?”
“i need to talk to quinn,” trevor whispered to him.
“so speak? what is hard about this? you’ve talked to quinn loads of times,” jack said.
“no like… i need to talk to quinn,” trevor said again, this time emphasizing “talk.”
“are you seriously going to talk to him about sissy?” jack asked, albeit a little to loud.
“talk to who about sissy?” quinn asked. the two junior’s heads snapped towards him.
“uh…”
“trevor wants to talk to you about sissy alone!” jack announced. trevor winced and elbowed him in the side.
quinn raised his eyebrow as his brother groaned. it only took him a few seconds to realize why, “you like her.”
trevor’s eyes widened at being called out. jack, however, enjoyed this very much, “he does! he’s practically in love with her!”
quinn sat down on the ottoman in front of trevor. his leaned over and clasped his hands together with his elbows resting on his knees, “and why do you need to talk to me about this?”
“because you’re important to her. when she had that big breakup and you drove down to be with her, i knew i’d never have any real chance unless you liked me enough. and i’m scared i won’t be enough for her, but i want to try. i really want to try and be the perfect man for her because she deserves nothing less. but i could be the most perfect guy for her in the universe and it wouldn’t matter if you didn’t approve.”
quinn looked down and tried to hide a smile, “are you asking me for permission to ask y/n out?”
“i am,” trevor said, confidently this time.
“no one else has done this. no one else has even been around long enough to make it to the meeting me stage, which she deems as most important. so you’re already ahead of the game,” quinn said.
“i’m not sure if that was a yes or not,” trevor said.
“you’ll be good to her?”
“i’ll be everything she wants and needs.”
“and you won’t be offended by the ‘i don’t let go of her until she’s ready even if it’s for hours’ rule?”
“never. what you two have is special and i’d never want to take that away from her,” trevor answered firmly.
quinn smiled, “then by all means; if she deems you good enough, i do, too.”
trevor’s eyes lit up, “really?!”
“really,” quinn laughed.
trevor jumped forward and tackled quinn into a hug which sent the entire room laughing. quinn semi-reluctantly hugged him back before shoving him off of him, and that’s when you and ellen returned.
“whatcha doing on the floor, z?” you laughed as you walked in with a grocery bag.
“quinn shoved me!” trevor shouted in a tattle tale voice.
“did you deserve it?” you asked him.
“yes!” quinn shouted at the same time as trevor said, “no!”
“sorry, z,” you laughed again. “what quinn says goes!”
trevor got up and walked over to you, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, “what quinn says goes?”
“look who’s listening ears are on!” you teased. “yes, what quinn says goes.”
trevor looked at quinn, who looked back all knowingly, “i’ll have to agree with you on that one.”

YOU LOOKED AT ME AND THEN I KNEW! (deeply insane jacktrevor thoughts below)
having THOUGHTS about them right now and i need to vent it or else i will Explode like the Sub okay. i was not a jacktrevor girlie until i saw trevor in the stands with jim hughes + that candid photo of the two of them laughing ntdp-era on the streets of NY and there’s been some seriously insane scholarship on jacktrevor here like hello it is making me so insane i wish i had the words for it. its like. ok what if we met when we were 15 and we knew that we were going to be each other’s person for the longest time and we loved each other so much that we’re mirror reflections of each other and i can’t tell where you end and i begin. what if we were 15 and we promised ourselves to each other. what if. nothing ever happened because we were 15 and we knew it wasn’t going to end well and we wanted to be 15 so we carried on as friends, watched each other hook up across the room at house parties, crawled into each other’s beds at the end of the night without ever touching each other, went through the draft and the growing up and the living without each other and finding out that we’re still each other’s persons. what if i make it to the playoffs before you did. so you went to watch the game with my dad. and then i realized we were no longer 15. GODDDDDDDD. the specific vibe that has been crawling into my chest is being stunned by the enormity of your feelings like one day you wake up normal and the next day you realize you’re in love. where’s that tumblr post about the not romance not platonic but a secret third thing where the lines are so blurred the thought of romance hangs over your head like a guillotine. YEAHHHH. that’s such a guillotine to hang over someone’s head like! what if you already did all the hard parts of baring your worst self to each other, getting into a relationship but doing the steps in all the wrong order that the thought of defining your relationship gives you a headache because how do you even begin to define whatever soulmate fuckery these two have been on since they were 15! where do i even begin with girl jack. still a fuckboy. still flirting. still got incomprehensible confidence. looks up to see trevor chatting animatedly with her dad in the stands and panicking on ice when she realizes she has extremely specific feelings about this, about trevor’s who’s always matched her step for step.  i think there is also something sooooo insane about trevor and his very public relationships and how he is Failing at romance in general. girl jack having to live through that and going “i could never imagine being one of trevor’s flings.” and then she does self reflection and realizes she doesn’t want to be one of trevor’s flings because she wants something More Than That. girl trevor would also make me insane. still fucking around and fumbling her way through relationships. jack ribs her all the time about that except he’s also a little on edge watching it happen in real time hoping it never happens to him which is haha SO funny jack you absolute silly little goose. why would you think trevor would want to date you? you’ve been friends forever, if something was going to happen it would’ve already happened. cmon man it’s a little misogynistic to think that every girl who’s your friend wants to date you. ellen raised you better than that cmon jack. besides. why are you thinking about trevor dating you. why are you scared of something that you say could never happen. why do you live in fear of the idea that she could break your heart. how could she break something she doesn’t have. right? hmm.  anyways i think there is no easy for them to be in a relationship. years of seeing each other hook up with other people and also knowing the deepest, ugliest parts of each other and also just. having deeply intertwined lives and shared social circles and history and friendship. i think it would deeply terrify them to see each other in a romantic light after all these years. they grew up together! they know each other best! how could they put themselves in such a vulnerable position of losing each other, of losing what they have? it would be the hardest relationship of their lives. so like, why do it?  thinking deeply about the insane media and personal speculation also because i LOVE acknowledging the very real effect of other people’s opinions. people  going “of course you were going to end up together!” and other people placing bets on whether or not they were going to end up together like. of course people have opinions. part of it is Media, Baby, that’s what you get for being the franchise center but part of it is also. who they are as people. and their personas just inviting public speculation. they preform the role of a celebrity extremely well! like maybe they should get together because that’s what people expected? maybe they shouldn’t get together because that’s not what people expected? how do you manage a deeply personal relationship that survived childhood but is now subject to the media. and then the actual logistics of being together like in what world does it make sense to do long distance for a decade. like. hello they are both respective franchise centers. no one is moving anywhere. except maybe trevor to the rangers but ANYWAYSSSSSS. i just think they should crawl into bed together, coming home from a bar after watching each other hook up the whole entire night and not say anything as they fall into a deeply unrestful sleep, shoulders pressed against each other.

Seamus saw Skyler at first during the USA ntdp games and he thought she was the most beautiful girl ever. Never had the corsage to talk her he saw her time and time but then never again. Until the worlds and he thought this was his chance.
Skylar always thought he was cute but anytime she would try and talk to him he would run away. She thought something was wrong with her. Until the world juniors and he was more confident and would talk to her more how couldn’t she fall for him
constantly stole glances at her but kept it so lowkey
was devastated when he thought he would never see her again so imagine his reaction when he saw her at world juniors...
literally he was SO NERVOUS everytime she approached him but he was too scared to approach her so she always made the first move and he would just stutter and trip over some sentences before saying "gotta go" and scurrying off
she eventually gave up because she thought he just didn't like her
but when he got his second chance at worlds he was NOT going to pass it up. he talked himself up so much before approaching her and literally this girls face LIT UP when he did
