As much as i like to entertain the idea that Pixal kept her Samurai X identity a secret for so long because she felt ashamed of departing from her established 'assistant' role in Zane's headset but also liked having a body too much to give it up, i do think the infinitely funnier option is that she just did it to fuck around with them. I mean cmon. Go rewatch season 7 and try to tell me Pixal wasnt having at least a little bit of fun dunking on everyone

Season 7 may be poorly written and kinda dumb and have bad animation and bad dialogue and be pretty underthought and be bad at exploring the sibling dynamic it apparently wants to showcase, but-

...they nailed it with the clock chimes in the soundtrack. They sound cool as hell and are thematically coherent.

10/10 on that decision.

Ronin redesigns and rewrite

Seasons 8-9

(Details under the cut)

For Ronins rewrite the aim is to improve his arc explore his relationship with other characters more.

Season 5:

For this season I'm simply adding strength to his motives by adding a sickness caused by being cursed. Having a cursed (dead) soul while still alive makes his body unstable, this causes things like pains in his chest and migraines

Focas is kept on his relationship with Nya as well, exploring their similarities and changing the sword of sanctuary scene so that she sees the affects of the curse. (Some more details about this are in her season 5 rewrite)

Season 6:

Nadakhan still frames the ninja but it's not til after finding out his home realm's been destroyed. Ronin makes sure he's hired first before more dangerous bounty hunters target them then proceeding to take the ones he catches to a hideout unfortunately only being able to get Nya, Kai, and Zane to safety.

While the half of the team in kryptarium manages to get information and escape the police catch onto what Ronin did and manage to locate the hideout. Ronin ends up taking the fall as a distraction so the other 3 could escape

Season 7:

In this season the focas is on his relationship both siblings but mostly Kais. Ronin being protective over a someone's who's usually the one protecting others.

He also takes place as the new Samurai X at the suggestion of Pixal. She had enlisted his help to discreetly rebuild herself and urged him to use the title which allows him to stick to his own moral code for the sake of helping people.

time for a wip breakdown post:

digital reflections au - explained in this post. short version: jay is replaced by an npc clone of himself (called superstar rockin’ jay) during s12 and is abandoned in prime empire by the unaware ninja. two oneshots have been planned; one has been written and posted here, and the other’s about halfway done.

putting the puzzle pieces back together - my take on what happened to jay post-merge! written post-leaks and pre-teasers so it’s all based on the fact that jay has amnesia and he’s working for the administration (which, in my au, is an agency dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and using it to keep the other realms in line). it’s been a project of mine for a while and i cannot wait to share the rest of it (especially what i have planned for jay’s powers)!

my currently-unnamed groundhog day au is based on the concept of the film (time loops), but not strictly the plot. kai and nya get stuck in a time loop during the finale of s7, and have to work with each other, their newly-returned parents, and the ninja to restore time to its natural state. i have a couple of scenes planned for this but that’s about it; i’m trying (emphasis on the word trying) to finish my other projects before tackling this!

and finally: my other prime empire au that’s been in the works since… *checks notes* july 2022?!? it’s gone through many changes and rewrites due to the fact it’s heavily science-fiction inspired and therefore requires a lot of lore-building to make sense. it’s a prime empire au, but in the loosest sense possible: there’s a video game called prime empire, some people get trapped in it, and jay gets separated from the ninja - but that’s about all there is in common. unfortunately i can’t say too much about it, given the fact that there are certain plot twists that change the trajectory of the entire story and are therefore spoilers.

List of Ninjago City events that have and have not caused power outages.

This is mainly going to be a list with a few analyses & theories dropped here and there.

I am listing this chronologically by season, but not DR, mainly because during the events in Episodes 1 & 20, it is not clear if there was any power outages or not.

This list is specifically events impacting Ninjago City, so events such as the Preeminent attacking Stiix is not going to be listed.

If I have missed events that you feel are important to list, feel free to let me know! I will fix it and credit you on the catch.

Season 1

Great Devourer Attack: No power outage, based on the TVs and everything still being on

Season 2

Stone Army Attack (Day Ninjago Stood Still): No power outage, based on Gayle Gossip being able to broadcast on the news that everyone should evacuate.

Overlord Attack: Power outage. No building lights shown during this time. Power outage appears to be caused by weird Overlord magic opposed to something being actually knocked out in the Grid.

Season 3:

Storm Farm: Power outage. Probably most obvious one, based on there being a whole episode where the end goal is the ninja to take out Ninjago City's power corrupted by the Overlord. Possibly longest lasting outage in the show, with it being confirmed to have gone on for days by the angry citizens. At this point, it is confirmed that Ninjago City has one source of power. The Storm Farms are probably still used after Season 3, but it isn't that hard to believe that Ninjago City decided to use other sources for their power grid after this point as well.

Season 6:

Ninjago City Being Split and Pieces Starting to Float: No power outage for whole City. Gayle Gossip and NGTV news is shown broadcasting about the issue. Areas that got split and floated away probably lost power though, due to literally being disconnected from the grid.

Season 7:

Forward Time Blade: Brief power outage (if I'm remembering correctly). Power went off for a couple seconds and then came back on, and in the Bounty's case, sent alarms going off.

(Note about Present Getting Messed With in the Finale: Even though power is confirmed to be gone, I'm not counting this as either a power outage or no power outage, because the present was changed to not have electronics whatsoever)

Season 8:

Emperor Garmadon Attack: No power outage. Billboards are still shown lit up and everything

Season 9:

Emperor Garmadon's Reign: No power outage. Despite the City being a wreck, lights & TVs are still shown to be on.

Season 10:

Oni Attack: Power Outage. It is shown that when the Oni tendrils gets close to lights, and almost everything else electrical, they get shut off. Like the Overlord attack of Season 2, nothing in the grid is actually knocked out, but the power outage is initiated by magical means.

Season 11:

Aspheera Attack: No power outage. Despite fire balls being everywhere, power still appears to be on everywhere.

Preeminent Attack (Kaiju Protocol): No power outage. Despite buildings getting absoutely battered from the Preeminent's impacts, building lights are still shown to be on. And when PIXAL plugs herself into the electrical generator, there are not any effects actually shown.

Season 12:

Prime Empire Initiation: No power outage. This may not be important to add, but for a shockwave affecting electronics, it noticeably only turned off video games for a split second, then reprogrammed them as Prime Empire.

Unagami Attack: No noticeable power outage. Borg Tower still has power functioning, but that could just be Borg Tower. We see nothing indicating that power is out for the rest of the City.

Season 14:

Wojira Pulse (Episode 2): No noticeable power outage. We see the shock wave hit the city, but don't see the effects. But based on how it affected the Monastery, which was also hit, electricity was not affected at all. Only water. (Probaby due to Kalmaar trying to wake up Wojira while she only had the Wave amulet)

Wojira Attack: Power outage. In the beginning of the attack, we see the lights and everything still on. But as the attack proceeds, we also see lights flicker and die out, and at the end of the attack, little to no lights still on.

Season 15:

Shockwave From Draining Nya's Power: Power outage. And it's an obvious one. We see the power go right after the shockwave hits certain parts of the City, with building lights going completely black. One strange thing to note however is that the Monastery's power is not shown to be affected in the aftermath. First most believable circumstance was that the shockwave had not gained enough power yet to knocked power out. Second most believable circumstance is that the shockwave briefly knocked the power out for a second or two, and then rebooted quickly.

Overlord Attack: Power outage. Like Season 2's attack, the outage was caused by magical means, with the temple emitting a radiation that targeted electrical devices.

I honestly wanted the make this mainly to show how strong Ninjago City's power grid appears to be. Also, it appears that usually when there is a power outage, the Overlord is in some way involved.

I was originally going to make a short post about the Overlord, and then decided in the shower to do a whole list. And in a few days, I'll probably start a rewatch of the entire Ninjago show just to look for boats, and then post the first list in a few weeks. Which I also thought about doing while in the shower.

Day of the Departed - Angry dead teenager fights evil dead sensei and accidently raises the dead. Oh and he becomes a real boy again and gets cool new glowy hands

The Hands of Time -Wu's past comes back to bite him in the ass

The Hatching - Just when you think the Serpentine couldn't get weirder

A Time of Traitors - Great now all the ninja have daddy issues

Scavengers - 10-year old struggles to keep team of violent hungry teenagers in check

A Line in the Sand - Jay is best ninja

The Attack - Evil twins and danger noodle hivemind attacks ninja base and steals this seasons collectables and senile sensei

Secrets Discovred - Nya makes a new friend, Kai begins to plot patricide

Pause and Effect - Plot twist, evil parents are not evil

Out of the Fire and Into the Boiling Sea - The power of siblings compels you

Lost in Time - Wibbly wobbly timey wimey hyjinks resulting in evil twins plus Wu getting lost in time

oh yknow what wouldve been a way to make season 7 way more interesting? If Kai and Nya got split up between timelines. Like, season 7 has a lot to with the aftermath of the Serpentine War and the Elemental Alliance, right? So what if one of the siblings got yoinked into the past and had to fight alongside the original EMs? So maybe Kai ends up 40 years in the past due to Time Blade/time travel shenanigans, and the plot becomes about him and Nya trying to find their way back to each other. Kai is helping the EMs, getting to know his parents, trying and failing to prevent a bajillion horrible things that are going to happen in the coming years (maybe he even inadvertently causes a few of them, just for angst reasons), and trying to figure out how to get back to Nya. This would also give us some opportunity to learn more about the Elemental Alliance, maybe we see glimpses of Morro before he died, maybe some hints into what happened to Jay's birth-mother, Kai meets Lilly, and heck just for funsies maybe we get a bit of backstory regarding the previous Ice EM.

Meanwhile Nya is in the present, struggling to get him home, defeat the Time Twins, and rescue her long-lost parents. She also gets some angst bc she doesn't know her parents very well and as we've seen from Seabound she doesn't exactly get along with them, and she's trying to make it work because Kai is depending on her. And maybe in her efforts to save Kai we get a closer look at their relationship from her perspective, and see just how much she cares about him. So the season as a whole would kinda follow the ns9 model of dual plotlines, one following Kai in the past as he goes up against the Past Time Twins, and another timeline following Nya in the present as she and the ninja go up against the Present Time Twins. AND we can get some bonus content of Wu steadily realizing who the mysterious red stranger was from 40 years ago, and we can get some development for Wu and Kai's relationship - which would make it much more impactful when Wu throws Kai and Nya out of the Iron Doom and gets lost in the time stream in order to save them. We saw Past Wu interact and bond with Kai, and we see Present Wu interact and bond with Nya, so it will feel more meaningful when he sacrifices his safety to get them back to their proper time.

New theory that in season 7, Zane knew Pix was leaving the whole time, and just kept it a secret cuz she said she needed time away from the team which he 100% understood.

She had plenty of time to think it through while he was passed out, and then talk it through in his head while his speech was on the fritz. He could respond back to her in garbled nonsense which only she understood. With Pixal's habitual talking out loud in Zane's head that we see in this scene, I find it unlikely she wasn't verbally creating her plan to leave and save her father.

Zane staged the initial loss of contact after a mission, at a time he knew people would hear and observe him being confused.

Pictured: Zane making a ~confused face~ in front of at least half the team after awkwardly inviting Pixal into a group conversation (a thing that never happens)

He still has a bit of a mental breakdown without her, cuz he's not used to her being gone, so that character beat still works.

And when she shows up, he goes out of your way to help her. This can definitely be them subtly flirting with each other:

He asks if perchance anyone else was affected by the time shenanigans cuz he knows pixal is around.

Their eventual reunion doesn't have a lot of fanfare, just a low key normal hug with a half baked excuse for her absence, cuz they aren't actually surprised to see each other.
