"as if every step was poured from a bottle with a narrow neck" and then that bottle was used for a Molotov cocktail. DONATE TO GAZA and you can request I draw you whatever you want like this
My favorite character for @gvartistsforpalestine , this time I took the excuse to experiment with character design and do an older book!Jesper design for a lil barrel flash. I LOVED the costume design of the show but it was definitely more Barrel than Flash. I also wanted to rectify the fanart and show issue of only showing him in Kerch and Wandering Isle inspired patterns. He lived in Novyi Zem until 15! and I picture him returning to learn from other zowa. When I read the books I thought NZ was based on Ethiopia due to the Eastern Orthodox themes, so his vest here is inspired by habesha designs. The show appeared to draw inspiration from Nigeria which was also awesome. Will I be doing a whole Barrel Flash series of his clothes using Scottish, Irish, show (Kerch and NZ), and Ethiopian designs? Yes.

What the actual FUCK?! (no. 1)
So apparently the show decided to paint Novyi Zem as Grisha-loving idyll.
Alina: “You're a Durast?“
Zemeni librarian: “Oh. Zemeni do not use such narrow terms. We are all "zowa". Blessed.“
Alina: “Oh, that's, um... That's lovely.“
Zemeni librarian: “Being Grisha is a wonderful thing. A beautiful thing. But we are lucky to be safe here in Novyi Zem. I feel for the Ravkan Grisha. May their Saints watch over them.“
SAFE IN NOVYI ZEM?! Is that why Jesper had to hide being Grisha?!
When he was a little boy, lying in his father’s fields, he’d discovered he could leach the color out of a jurda blossom petal by petal. One boring afternoon, he’d bleached a swear word into the western pasture in capital letters. His father had been furious, but he’d been scared too. He’d yelled himself hoarse chastising Jesper, and then Colm had just sat there, staring at him, big hands clasped around a mug of tea to keep them from shaking. At first, Jesper thought it was the swear his father was mad about, but that wasn’t it at all.
“Jes,” he’d said at last. “You must never do that again. Promise me. Your ma had the same gift. It can bring you only misery.”
...
There were secret lessons too. Sometimes, when they got home late, and she needed to get supper on, she’d boil the water without ever heating the stove, make bread rise just by looking at it. He’d seen her pull stains from clothes with a brush of her fingers, and she made her own gunpowder, extracting the saltpeter from a long-dry lake bed near where they lived. “Why pay for something I can make better myself?” she asked. “But we don’t mention this to Da, hmm?” When Jesper asked why, she’d just say, “Because he has enough to worry about, and I don’t like it when he worries about me.” But Da did worry, especially when one of his mother’s Zemeni friends came to the door looking for help or healing.
“You think the slavers can’t reach you here?” he’d asked one night, pacing back and forth in their cabin as Jesper huddled in his blankets, pretending to sleep so that he could listen. “If word gets out there’s a Grisha living here—”
Crooked Kingdom Chapter 16
... safe in Novyi Zem? Well yes, unless you’re kidnapped by Kerch slavers and sold to *checks notes* Fjerdan witchhunters, Shu experimenters or just other Kerch to use you however they please...
Most rogue Grisha ended up in Novyi Zem. Aside from Ravka, it was the only place where they didn’t have to fear being experimented on by Shu doctors or burned by Fjerdan witchhunters. Even so, they had to be cautious about displaying their power. Grisha were valued slaves, and less scrupulous Kerch traders were known to round them up and sell them in secret auctions.
These were the very threats that had led so many Grisha to take refuge in Ravka and join the Second Army in the first place. But the rogues thought differently. For them, a life spent looking over their shoulders and moving from one place to the next to avoid discovery was preferable to a life in service to the Darkling and the Ravkan King. It was a choice I understood.

Why Jesper didn't like Wylan at First
So, I see Jesper get a lot of hate for how he treated Wylan when they first met. As someone who adores Jesper Fahey, I cannot let this stand and I feel like I should address it. If you still don't like him by the end of this post then let's agree to disagree.
So my primary defense for him in his beginning relationship with Wylan is that they didn't know each other. Like Jesper had no idea who this random "kid" was and Kaz wasn't exactly in a telling mood. So Wylan just randomly appearing in the barrel without any explanation from Kaz would have put Jesper on edge.
And then of course Kaz reveals where Wylan grew up and his last name, etc. Jesper is obviously upset because why the hell would Kaz higher some random run away rich kid slumming it in the Barrel. Let's also not forget that Jan is a very wealthy and influential Mercher who has a lot of power. Let's also not forget that Merchers have a reputation for treating Grisha like indentured servants. Let's not forget the merchers sell and buy Grisha, participate in their trading/slaving, and are overall very abusive and oppressive to Grisha. So, Jesper, who is a Grisha and tries to keep his identity hidden and is ashamed of this part of him, just found out he's going to be spending weeks if not more with a guy who probably thinks lesser of him. He came from a background that might make someone stuck up or cruel or arrogant, and Jesper obviously has more humble origins.
And let's not forget that Jesoer doesn't know a lot of detail about Jan Van Eck, just the basics. Meaning he didn't know that Wylan was supposed to be at school, he didn't know his mom was "dead", and he didn't know Wylan was really isolated for most of his life and he especially didn't know about his relationship with his father.
So, yeah, Jesper judged Wylan at first. And obviously he couldn't voice any of these complaints to Kaz because have you met Kaz Brekker?? He couldn't say anything! So he took it out on Wylan. Fair? No. Understandable? Yes.
But let's not forget how their relationship developed. Jesper defended Wylan to Kaz multiple times, he comforted Wylan when he found out about his Mom, he was desperate to explain to Wylan that he did care about him and want him that way after he kissed Kuwei on accident ("Then why couldn't he tell the difference?" Because he's smart stupid not stupid smart okay-).
And besides, you do see the progression of their relationship go from avoidance/judgement to tolerance to understanding to care to love etc. Like it was a really beautiful relationship arc for both of them. Jesper's taunting turned to teasing which turned to flirting and Wylan always liked the attention and he started to pay more attention to Jesper. It's part of what makes them so special
Anyways. Wesper is not "toxic", Jesper is not "an asshole", Wylan is not "weak" and he can take care of himself. These are amazing characters some of you just won't look at them in depth and that's truly a shame. Thank you for reading! Let me know if there's anything I missed that you think I should include.

Let’s Talk About Power
Never Forget that Tolya -- who was never trained in the Little Palace; who spent his childhood hidden from detection first in the church, and then in Novyi Zem; who grew up to work as a mercenary far removed from any organized Grisha militia -- Tolya Yul-Bataar faced down one of the most powerful Heartrenders in the Second Army, the Darkling’s own right hand, and not only did he not have his heart crushed, Tolya obliterated Ivan from the inside out with the clench of One. Fist.
“Now we learn who has the stronger heart.”
                                     Damn Fucking Right.
This is a reminder that while the Second Army may be the most organized/established method for Grisha to come into their abilities with the Small Sciences, it is in no way the only Method. Or even the Best Method, if we are comparing the strength of both Tolya and his twin, Tamar, to other known Heartrenders. People might argue that there is a genetic element at work, that the Twins were born of a particularly powerful Grisha. But Raw Power will only take someone so far if they do not have the knowledge and control to hone it. Which Tolya and Tamar clearly Do.
We can assume that the Twins were educated in Novyi Zem, where Grisha are called Zowa and treated as those blessed with divine gifts. I’d extend that assumption to the efficacy of that training, in that perhaps Tolya is so masterful a Corporalnik because his education was not provided as a means to an end, or with the weight of serving in the Second Army hanging over his head. He wasn’t treated like a weapon, but like a Person.
Tolya is among the best of his kind because he was given a choice. And there is no greater power than the power to Choose.

So how do Suli names work? Do they just come from around the world?
I know the Suli are based on Romani people, who traveled a lot. But the Grishaverse doesn’t have a real life equivalent of Malaysia, which google says the last name ‘Ghafa’ comes from. So how does this work? Also, what is Novyi Zem based on? Is it seriously just all of Africa as a monolith??? How do THEIR names work?

For this season on Shadow and Bone, @quothalinguist and I got a chance to create the Zemeni and Shu languages. This is a post detailing the orthography of Zemeni. Christian Thalmann created the orthography for Shu, and I'll post about that here, as well. More info on the languages coming soon!

hey hey, I have a GREAT AND MAGNIFICENT idea. Bir Tawil is the last large territory that is not claimed by any country and owns 2060 km² along the border between Egypt and Sudan. So if no country wants it... it occurred to me that we could go there, claim the territory, plant a flag and start forming our own Ravka.
I'm brilliant, I know😌
Start packing your bags, Grishaverse.

Siege and Storm- Chapter 7 (Leigh Bardugo)
Is this a part of the act, or is Nikolai actually a tiny bit of a racist snob?
Sure, it would add some depth, but it would also blemish the picture of The Perfect Prince Charming...
I could interpret it as a figure of speech, but...
