Love's In Sight Review
A: Uoyama, T: Nova Skipper, L: Kyla Aiko, E: Jack Carrillo Concordia
Tumblr media
[ID: English Cover for "Love's In Sight" Vol 1. A teenage girl in a pink sweater vest and skirt school uniform presses herself up against a teenage boy dressed all in black. He has a black emo style haircut that covers one eye, but shows off a large scar across the other. She has wide blue eyes that are not looking directly at the boy. In one hand she holds a cane. Her other hand is feeling his face, a thumb stuck in his open mouth. He looks Incredibly flustered.]
"Love blooms between a tough delinquent boy and a spunky girl with a vision impairment! Morio Kurokawa is the toughest-looking tough guy around. Yukiko Akaza is a self-possessed girl with a vision impairment attending a school for the blind. The whole city fears Morio, but Yukiko sees the real him-he's a soft sweetheart who's just searching for his place in the world! Mori the Black Panther has won over a hundred fights. He's beloved by his goons and feared by the public. But now, he faces his biggest challenge yet when he meets Yukiko...and falls in love at first sight! Can Morio outgrow his delinquent roots and turn over a new leaf for his unexpected love?"
When I first heard about this book, my immediate thought was that of complete and utter dread. I assumed from the plot summary and the cover image that it was just going to be a series of jokes at the expense of the female protagonist. Because haven't we all seen that before? Disabled people being the butt of all the joke and never the one making them, despite disabled people being some of the funniest folks around?
But upon finding out via Twitter that the translator, Nova Skipper, had low vision as a child which was partially corrected by surgery, and that the book was inspired by the mangaka’s experience with her father's sight loss, I became more interested. If the translator understood what it was like to be visually impaired, then I could at least rely on some level of authenticity.
And boy oh boy am I super glad I gave this series a shot! Disclaimer as always, whilst I am physically disabled, I am not Visually Impaired. Or rather, my Visual Impairment comes in the form of double vision that is corrected by medication and only requires I sometimes wear an eye patch/black out lens. Therefore I cannot confidently say whether the series is ableist towards visually impaired people or not, but without a shadow of a doubt it absolutely has its heart in the right place!
The series takes a real hard look (no pun intended) at the different struggles people with visual impairments and other disabilities face all whilst being genuinely funny and heart-warming. The jokes are never at Yukiko's expense, if anything they're targeted at the able-bodied people around her! And when her visual impairment is used for laughs, it's in a way that feels natural and that she can own. For example, when she bumps into Morio because he is wearing all black and she cannot differentiate between him and a tree, so he runs off to buy fluorescent clothing resulting in an easy to spot boyfriend but a man she doesn't want to be seen dead with.
Tumblr media
[ ID: Morio and Yukio stand outside a clothes shop. Morio is dressed in a pair of jeans, a long sleeved TShirt, and a mesh vest with a smiley love heart on it. The TShirt is labelled as being orange, the jeans red, and the vest black and day glow yellow. "Spar-KILL" sound effects dot around him. M: "How's this, am I easier to see?" Y: "You're easier to see… but harder to be seen WITH." ]
The series does a wonderful job of explaining what it means to be visually impaired, and the different forms that can take. Uoyama uses her medium superbly to give the reader an excellent idea of just what Yukiko's level of vision is. And whilst the fact that it started out as a Pixiv Comic means that the layouts are rather samey (always just four horizontal panels), it's clear that she chose manga as a means to tell this story for a reason. Even if comics are sadly still an inaccessible format for many visually impaired people….
Tumblr media
[ID: Panel 1) A highly satirised image of a public park in black and white where no details can be made out. There are "Vroom" and "tweet tweet sound effects" Y: Here's fine Kurokawa. M: For real? Let me walk you home. Y: I'm familiar with the way back.
Panel 2) A highly saturated head shot of Morio where none of his facial features can be made out save for a vague outline of his eyes and mouth. M: Well, okay. I wanted to but…
Panel 3) Same image again. M: What's up Miss Yukiko? Y: ….
Panel 4) Half body shot of Morio with his hand stretched out. There are even fewer of his facial features visible. There is a "Tap Tap" sound effect to imply that Yukiko is walking away with help of her cane. Y: It's nothing. Bye. M: Huuuuuh? I wanna know! ]
On a personal note, I really related to the complicated relationship between Yukiko and her older sister. The way in which she felt smothered by her constant attention and concerns, whilst also understanding that she does need help with things. Mostly though, Yukiko just wants to live as a teenager who makes their own poor decisions. It can be difficult to get the balance right as a disabled person between getting the help you need and having the independence you crave. Between doing what is sensible, and doing what is fun. For me, that was staying up past midnight to go to convention parties even though I knew it would increase my seizure risk, for Yukiko that's wearing the shiny and pretty high heels her boyfriend buys for her even though they're a major trip hazard.
The story doesn't just focus on Yukiko's experience of the world though. In volume two, it's clear that the Mangaka instends to show how society's snap judgments and so called "norms" harm everyone. Morio is shown to struggle as a child because of how his grandmother's lack of wealth and poor vision means he wears tattered second hand clothes. In adult life, he's shown to find it nearly impossible to find even a basic job because people make snap judgments about him because of his facial scar, something that is completely beyond his control. In an incredibly touching flashback, we're shown how a queer character is made to feel angry, and vulnerable, simply because he must live in a society that views him and the way he loves as "different" and "other".
This book isn't just for disabled people, it's for anyone who has ever felt like they've been left out by society or judged prematurely based on things beyond their control. It's about making connections between people, and embracing both our individualities and our similarities. I would say it does an excellent job of showing the importance of understanding solidarity between seemingly different marginalised social groups, and I very much look forward to finding out what happens in volume 3, which should be coming out in the UK sometime soon.

Questions for mun
Which muse of yours is your all time favorite?
Hard to say. I think if they are not on my multi and have a single blog instead, it's likely that I enjoy writing them the most. I quite enjoy writing Eberwolf. Feral creature that was raised by wild animals, but also I don't have to write dialogue. I am so much better at describing thoughts and dialogue is something I really struggle with. Not to mention that I quite enjoy writing their cheeky shenanigans. They are just one of those characters that comes naturally in writing for me.
XR has become a comfort character to me and I love that complex, flawed, adorable little robot with a sassy attitude. He is quite a challenge to write for me though. Mainly because the complexity of his character, including that every single dynamic with him is also extremely complex. Humor is not my strength, nor is a clever dialogue or comebacks.
Pretty much all my Sonic muses, mainly the ones from the archie comics. They just had these interesting characters with equally interesting plot and dynamics that I wish to explore more.
Is there a muse you really want to try? if yes: what’s stopping you?
Time, energy and the fact that I already roleplay too many characters. There are some characters that I would love to play, but I am not good at portraying the complexity of these characters.
Such as:
Buzz Lightyear (he just seems like a fun type to explore) Mira Nova Commander Nebula King Nova NOS-4-A2 XL Zurg Rika Furude Ange Ushiromiya Bernkastel Skipper
I am also trying to avoid playing "the big bad" types of characters since I can never get them right. If I play villains, it's mainly just henchmen who get up to shenanigans.
In general, I try to avoid roleplaying main characters. XR is already a handful.
Torque would also be fun to play but I doubt I will manage to get him right.
Tabaqui from the jungle book franchise. Tried many times before, he's kinda hard to do.
Cyn / Absolute Solver but I am waiting for more on them first.
Tessa, but it's the same with Cyn.
Uzi would be fun to try out but I'm definitely not gonna manage to get a grasp on her.

Nova Scotia: Passage to Rogue's Roost and Mahone Bay
A rookie sailor endures fog, dangerous rocks and a dinghy mishap on a birthday cruise along Nova Scotia’s south shore.
Originally published in Canadian Yachting and Halifax Chronicle Herald
“Guys, come and look at this. We’ve got company – BIG company!”
Skipper David Burke, owner of Angeleah, a well-kept Pearson 303 sailboat, points to the blinking mass on the radar screen. “Whatever it is, it’s coming in past Mauger’s Beach. Likely a car carrier headed for the Autoport at Eastern Passage.” David motions up through the companionway. “Let’s keep a good lookout. She’ll be to port, and I doubt we have 20 metres visibility in this soup.”
Tumblr media
The fog hasn’t budged since we slipped Angeleah’s berth at Armdale Yacht Club at 0630. Our destination is Rogue’s Roost, one of Nova Scotia’s favoured south shore anchorages, tucked into the granite coast near the fishing community of Prospect.
With time at a premium for this Canada Day weekend cruise, we’ll leave the mainsail tucked in its kelly green sailbag, relying on the deep throbbing inboard diesel to punch us through the chop of Halifax harbour, around Chebucto Head and along the coast. At an average speed of four to five knots, we expect to make Hearn Island and Roost Island by early afternoon. We’ll anchor for the night and continue in the morning past Chester to Mahone Bay, further along the south shore.
David has arranged to rent a mooring for the summer, and when he invited me to crew on this trip, my family chased me out the door, saying a cruise would be the perfect way to celebrate my birthday. And they’re right. Here I am, on a solid, comfortable boat with a competent skipper and two new friends.
The hulking carrier passes without incident. I’m now glad to be on a boat fitted with all the modern amenities: auto helm, radar, GPS, depth sounder, VHF, dual batteries and a CD player that puts my home stereo to shame.
As we head offshore, the water darkens, but there is nothing to see. The diesel hums as Angeleah’s bow points to 180 degrees magnetic through one of the busiest commercial shipping lanes in North America.
“Gotta be real careful through here,” says David. “You can get some big freighters clipping through here and the navy pretty much owns this place. You might think you have right-of-way, but they rule the channel. Further out, it’s the fishing fleets we need to stay clear of. They’ll show up as clusters on the radar.”
I’m already impressed with this guy. His last boat was a Tanzer 26, and he’s sailed throughout eastern Canada. He’s taken his 6-tonne Pearson from Sydney to Halifax along the eastern shore and into the sailor’s paradise known as the Bras d’Or Lakes, a huge body of salt water cut into the middle of Cape Breton. It’s a secluded sailing ground with consistent winds and very little tidal action, a far cry from where we are this Saturday morning, motoring against the prevailing winds. And with this much fog, we’re relying on electronic (ie: ready-to-fail-at-the-first-hint-of-trouble) equipment to keep us off the steep granite cliffs to starboard. I can’t see the cliffs, but if the chart says that’s where they are, we need to pay very close attention.
This is when I regret my fascination with maritime history. I’ve ready too many stories of the wayward ships that have slammed into the coast or foundered on shoals after an ocean crossing. Looking at the chart, we’re not too far from the site of one of the worst disasters in the Halifax area – Thrumcap Shoal, south of McNab’s Island, where HMS La Tribune was caught in a winter gale in November 1797. Helpless bystanders stood on bluffs in nearby Herring Cove as the sea showed no mercy toward the sailors on the British frigate.
As morning broke, a 13-year old orphan from Herring Cove named Joe Cracker launched a dory into the frightening swell and saved two crewmen. Prompted by the youngster’s bravery, older men joined in to rescue another ten sailors from certain death. The loss of the Tribune took 238 lives. Angeleah’s hull has just passed by Tribune Rock, named in memory of that terrible night.
Now is not the time to think about people dying at sea, I tell myself. Pay attention. Keep your eyes scanning across the bow. Check the compass. Heading offshore, keep green buoys to starboard, red buoys to port. Don’t get sick. I really should have taken Gravol before we left.
The other two crew, Lang and Johnny, have both taken their anti-seasick medication. They’ve sailed with David before in pretty rough seas. Lang is a policy analyst with the provincial tourism department. Johnny works in construction. Both are friendly guys who are true Maritimers – never at a loss for a good story. There’ll be no shortage of conversation or humour on this trip. The few moments of boredom are broken by lame jokes about Swedish women in search of hardy Canadian sailors. Ahar, maties!
I hop below and grab the chart bag and find CHS #4237 so I can visualize where we’re heading. When David invited me along, I jumped at the chance to learn all I could about coastal piloting. My only previous sailing experience was limited to Laser racing on Wascana Lake in Regina, where I ended up turtling and sticking my mast into six feet of the thickest, stinkiest muck on the planet (they’ve since dredged and deepened the lake) so cruising into the Atlantic is pretty heady stuff.
The GPS shows we have passed Herring Cove and Ketch Harbour and are on course toward famous Chebucto Head, where untold thousands of ocean-going vessels have made landfall after their Atlantic crossings. The chart tells us that along with radio signals and lights, there’s a fog horn that signals twice every minute. As we approach the point, wrapped in fog, we’re all straining to hear the deep ‘Woooomp, Woooomp’ from the shore. Then, the eery but welcome sound penetrates the fog and reassures us that David’s navigation is right on the money.
Tumblr media
I time the signal on my watch. “Yep, twice a minute,” I advise my mates. “Must be Chebucto Head.” It dawns on me that they know perfectly well where we are, but they’re too nice to make me feel like a real greenhorn, a far cry from the old salt Captain Joshua Slocum, who sailed by this very point more than a century ago on his epic journey around the world. He was the first person to do it alone. In his book ‘Sailing Alone Around the World’, Captain Slocum noted in his log for July 3, 1895:
“6:45 p.m., close under Chebucto Head light near Halifax Harbour, watching light after light sink astern as I sailed into the unbounded sea.” Two days later: “about midnight, the fog shut down again denser than before. One could almost stand on it. I felt myself drifting into loneliness.”
At the base of Chebucto Head, there are some nasty rocks that would chew up the ¼ inch-thick skin of a fiberglass boat. Our skipper is steering from the cabin, and every now and again he touches the plus or minus button on the auto helm to nudge us a bit left to make sure there’s plenty of room between us and the aids to navigation that he has programmed as waypoints. I’m fascinated at the technology. Steering without a wheel or tiller. Cool.
While David steers from below, Johnny is asleep on the port cockpit locker nursing a mild hangover, unaware of the water dripping from the boom onto his PFD, then his pant leg. Lang and I are trying to see through the curtain of fog, as the ocean swells play with Angeleah. We decide that Johnny needs the sleep more than he needs dry jeans, so we let him be.
When we reach red buoy ‘AM 58’ near Shannon Island, David focuses totally on his radar and GPS. This is serious stuff, conning Angeleah through a narrow channel, in total fog, between Hearn and Roost Islands, and thenonto a 100 degree magnetic course toward the anchorage. I was at the wheel as we passed green buoy ‘AN 52’.
“Dave, should I be to the left or right of the green can?” “What? Right, always right. Where are we?”
He jumps into the cockpit, sees the green buoy passing on the wrong side of the boat and grabs the wheel, cranking hard to starboard. “Everything left of that buoy is shallow water and nothing but rock. We’re fine now.”
Tumblr media
Fifteen minutes later, we anchor in 10 or 11 feet of water, well behind a group of power boaters who had rafted together for the night. As dusk falls, we gather around the cabin table munching on chips and dip, washing it down with rum.
“What’ll it be boys, light, dark or mystery?” asks our host. I ask for half an inch of the light, sissy stuff topped up with cola all the way to the rim. B.B. King’s blues classic ‘The Thrill is Gone’ is groovin’ out of the CD player. We talk and joke long enough to hear the CD repeat three or four times. I’m not much of a rum drinker, but damn, this is fun. So this is why people get hooked on cruising!
It reminds me of the chorus in ‘The Bosun’s Alphabet’, a sailor’s song popular among square-riggers during the late 1800s:
“Merrily, so merrily, so merrily sail we, There’s no mortal on earth like a sailor at sea, Blow high or blow low! As the ship rolls along, Give a sailor his grog, And there’s nothing goes wrong.”
Around midnight, at anchor in Rogue’s Roost, we settle into our sleeping bags. Skipper is in the V-berth forward, Johnny and I take the settees in the cabin, while Lang, the shortest of the crew, scampers into the quarter-berth next to the diesel engine and below the cockpit. It’s a tight squeeze.
A light breeze tickles the halyards against the mast. Not enough noise to keep me from a deep, long sleep. Even the party boys on the raft have turned in for the night.
Morning brings brilliant sunshine, perfect weather to ease out from the rocks toward Prospect. We’ll get to see what we sailed through in yesterday’s fog. We weigh anchor after a filling breakfast of eggs, fried tomatoes, toast, juice and coffee. As we pass the village of Prospect to our starboard, white crashing rollers slam the rocks. Nose into the wind, it’s on to Peggy’s Cove, Ironbound Island, past St. Margaret’s Bay, Tancook Island and into the gentle waters of Mahone Bay.
A few minutes after leaving the Peggy’s Cove lighthouse to starboard, we pass what appears to be a wounded seal or small whale. We can only see what appears to be either a dorsal fin or a flipper. Whatever it is, it turns slowly and is unable to dive. Not much we can do.
Now we’re almost directly above the final resting place of Swissair Flight 111. On Sept. 1, 1998, 229 people died here. I was a television reporter with CBC, and spent that night at CFB Shearwater. Cameras rolling, we watched as ambulances streamed onto the base, lights flashing, only to leave when it was apparent there would be no one to rescue. The disaster has been chronicled in books and on television, and now, here on the water 150 feet above the sea floor, a sadness comes over me. I move forward to sit on the deck at the bow. The warm breeze and sun and gentle motion make it easy to close my eyes and fall into a half-sleep.
Not long into the protected waters of Mahone Bay, David decides we’ll head to the town’s anchorage. We’ll pick up our mooring and go ashore, where our first priority is a shower, then dinner. The temperature has climbed all day, and the thought of a cold beer washing down a plate of fish and chips seems like a grand idea.
Mahone Bay is a must for cruisers along the south shore. Home of the annual Wooden Boat Festival, the town attracts talented craftspeople and city folk who scratch their rural itch by visiting on weekends. Shutterbugs come here to photograph the three beautiful churches (United, Lutheran, Anglican) perched together at the head of the harbour.
One of the enduring stories is about Mahone Bay’s role in the war of 1812. An American privateer named the Young Teazer was chased into the bay by a British warship. One of the privateer’s crew was a British deserter, who was at his wit’s end to avoid capture and harsh punishment. He set fire to the Young Teazer’s ammunition stores. The ship blew up, killing 28 sailors. A local gift shop carries the Teazer name to this day.
Our dinner and copious amounts of brew behind us, the three crew foolishly decide to row the tender out to Angeleah. Johnny forgot the rule about the importance of keeping a low centre of gravity in a small boat, so over we went, gear and all, into the drink. Locals on the wharf seemed to enjoy the entertainment. Red-faced but happy as clams, we made it back to the boat to catch a wonderful sunset.
Monday morning dawns clear with a light mist hanging above the water. Another huge breakfast, then all four of us use mops and buckets to wash the deck from stem to stern.
The morning fog is burned off by the sun poking up over the eastern horizon. My first offshore cruise will end when my sons Matt and Adam drive out from Halifax to pick me up at the wharf.
“That was awesome, man,” is about all I can say to thank our gracious skipper for the invitation, and for guiding us here safely.
“We’ll do it again,” says David.
After farewell handshakes, my sons and I head out on Highway 103 toward Halifax. I’ve already made up my mind to someday buy a boat of my own. In the words of Captain Slocum:
“To young men contemplating a voyage I would say go. The tales of rough usage are for the most part exaggerations, as also are the stories of sea danger the days passed happily with me wherever my ship sailed.”

 Description Book:
A masterfully told true story, perfect for fans of Say Nothing and Furious Hours: a brutal murder in a small Nova Scotia fishing community raises urgent questions of right and wrong, and even the very nature of good and evil. In his riveting and meticulously reported final book, Silver Donald Cameron offers a stunning, intricate narrative about a notorious killing and its devastating repercussions. Cameron?s searing, utterly gripping story about one small community raises a disturbing question: Are there times when taking the law into your own hands is not only understandable but the responsible thing to do? In June 2013, three upstanding citizens of a small town on Cape Breton Island murdered their neighbor, Phillip Boudreau, at sea. While out checking their lobster traps, two Landry cousins and skipper Dwayne Samson saw Boudreau in his boat, the Midnight Slider, about to vandalize their lobster traps. Like so many times before, the small-time criminal was about to cost them

Intro
Let’s get started. Today is November 6, 2022. Happy time change to those in the United States! This is Sunday Morning Manga. I am Derek S. McGrath, my pronouns are he/him/his. I’m here every Sunday, 11 AM on Twitch and YouTube. You can read my writing on Tumblr and WordPress, @dereksmcgrath, and email me at [email protected]
If you like what you’re hearing, consider a monetary contribution. Putting together this stream takes a bit of work, and your tips help pay down costs for setup and subscriptions. You can tip me Ko-Fi, ko-fi.com/dereksmcgrath. Thank you for your consideration.
The views and opinions expressed on this livestream are those of the speaker–me–and do not necessarily reflect the views or positions of any entities they represent or any other person mentioned.
Today’s Live Reaction: Mashle
As with every Sunday, there is a live-reaction to a new manga chapter released this morning, this time looking at Chapter 131 of Mashle. The series is written and illustrated by Hajime Komoto, with translation by Nova Skipper and lettering by Eve Grandt. Mashle is distributed in English in the United States by Viz; you can read at their web site. You can read along at the Viz web site–link is in the video description and on screen, or go to viz.com/shonenjump/chapters/mashle.
Accessibility and Links (and Mask Up!)
Links to this chapter and other content from today’s stream are available on my web site, dereksmcgrath.wordpress.com. There’s also a script for today’s stream and all images for greater accessibility.
(And as annoyed as you are hearing it, I’m just as annoyed seeing it: we’re not out of this pandemic, people, please mask up when going out or indoors. I’m still seeing colleagues attending conferences and traveling without being masked–that is spreading COVID and its variants, and it’s detrimental to those with compromised immune systems, disabilities, and health concerns around you. Stop being selfish and mask up.)
Vote for Democrats by Nov 8
And while I’m in a bad mood, I’ll have more to say about what has been keeping me away from livestreaming this week, so I have to play catch up, including reminding you that the final day to vote is coming up in two days, on Tuesday, November 8–so check your voter registration and where to vote at vote.org, vote down-ballot for Democrats to oppose the rise of American fascism and rightwing violence.
I don’t like being depressing, but when you have the husband of the Speaker of the House attacked in his own home, and a right wing spreading lies about what happened in that attack, and blaming the victim when the alleged attacker was allegedly parroting rightwing talking points, it is hard to maintain hope in the face of the rightwing political party in the United States standing for fascism, not democracy. As badly as I feel seeing any of my fellow citizens voting for fascism, that is nothing compared to how Pelosi’s husband feels, or how those suffering against anti-trans bullshit, racist and antisemitic bullshit, and all the other environmental damage and gun violence are feeling and confronting every day. We need to vote in Democrats, because they are the ones fighting against the lies, the violence, the hatred–and Democrats need you to fight, too, by voting for Democrats, by campaigning for Democrats, and by standing up against this rightwing party and its fascism!
Again, vote.org, vote by Tuesday, November 8, stay in line and don’t leave when you go vote, or find how to return your mail-in ballot in person. Thank you for your consideration in the fight against fascism, bigotry, and utter dumb-fuckery.
Postscripts
And before we get to the live-reaction, I would like to share some updates.
Soul Eater Halloween Fan Special at Irregulars Productions
Last weekend I had promoted the YouTube channel Irregulars Productions. On Halloween night, the channel premiered a fan production with some Halloween-theme shorts. You can check out that special on the Irregulars Productions YouTube channel–link is in the video description.
I Have Left Most Social Media
And not to delve back into disappointing news, but if we are stuck talking about politics and news, might as well discuss what has changed in social media.
(On screen is a vampire parrot. Why that bird? It’s just neat.)
I’ll go more into detail the next time I do the American Literature I livestream–more on that in a moment. But I have decided to leave most of social media. So, if you want updates, please find me on WordPress, Twitch, and YouTube–all are @dereksmcgrath–and please like, share, subscribe, and turn on notifications for when I’m online. And email me at [email protected]. And join my Discord, too, with a one-dollar contribution at ko-fi.com/dereksmcgrath.
I have a lot more to say about all of this, so if you are interested, tune in to the American Literature I livestream this upcoming week, where I will explain how leaving social media prompts a debate represented, out of all weird places, in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 19th-century short story “Young Goodman Brown.” But all I’ll say about this for now is, not being on social media compromises a lot of news that gets attention. And leaving a social media community only because it is under new management also means that you are turning your back on marginalized communities depending on these platforms to fight against bigotry, oppression, and violence. But I also can’t see how you can ethically justify remaining on platforms that are doing such violence, unless you are using those platforms to paradoxically destroy or reform those platforms. So, I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to stay on social media if it’s only to promote my work, not without putting in more time fighting such oppression–and I don’t see a platform where my reach is limited, and will be more limited by a far-right jackass running said platform. I’ll say more about this problem on the American Literature I livestream this week, so turn on notifications at the social media I’m staying on–YouTube, Twitch, Tumblr, Medium, Ko-fi–for updates.
American Literature I Hiatus
And speaking of that livestream–at risk of crossing streams here–I apologize that the American Literature I livestream took a largely unannounced hiatus this past week. The briefest explanation is that a lot happened in the past week, whether taking up time needed for the livestream, or causing enough physical pain or just emotional and mental harm that I needed to take more time with the livestream before I thought I could present it as best as I could. But as this upcoming week, talking about the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne, will be relevant as regards recent news and the upcoming election, I will do my best to get those livestreams done this week. Please check for YouTube and Twitch notifications for an alert when I go live.
Support Jeff Harris
And one last postscript. A few weeks ago, and since then, I have mentioned the work of media critic and scholar Jeff Harris and encouraged you to read his works and support him financially. And now Jeff needs your help: please contribute whatever you can to him on PayPal, as he is replacing a non-working computer, and it is vital he has a computer to keep working. Jeff’s PayPal link is in the chat, and you can find him on social media in the video description link as well. Thank you for your consideration contributing to Jeff.
News
That takes care of postscripts–so let’s look at news we missed over the past week!
Judge Blocks Penguin/Simon Merger
It is rare I get to commend the federal government for taking appropriate action, not because of which political party is in control–God, you need to vote for Democrats–but because justice is slow or non-existent when it faces off against wealth and privilege.
So, in a rare bit of good news for creators and readers, a United States judge blocked the merger of Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster. As Anime News Network points out, Penguin Random House has numerous clients in manga publishing: Seven Seas, Kodansha, Square Enix, and Dark Horse. And Simon & Schuster distributes Viz.
(Full disclosure: yeah, I have applied for work or been interviewed with at least two of these companies, and in my former position I was in contact with at least one of these publishers for recruiting speakers at conferences. So, I’m not ignoring my own participation and willingness to work within these corporations. Rather, my complaint is when you are on purpose reducing competition for the sake of your business and your shareholders but at the cost of competition, consumers, and art itself, as well as engaging in mergers that are going to lead to layoffs.)
Also, I should mention, this image on screen is from The Emperor and I, a vastly under-rated manga that you should be reading. The complete series is available on the Viz web site.
I really hope this judge’s block stays in place and that Penguin and Simon don’t complete any merger. We need more publishers, and while I sympathize with the problems for publishers, bookstores, and other vendors to stay profitable, that cannot be at the expense of avenues where authors can be published, fair pay to and continued employment for creators and employees, and fair prices for consumers. Furthermore, we cannot maintain these mergers that result in layoffs that further erode the economy and the ability for people to survive. Maybe if we had billionaires putting up money to fund publishing houses and newspapers to keep people working, and political campaigns on the side of honesty, fairness, anti-bigotry, equity, and anti-monopolization, instead of wasting billions of dollars on an ego-trip on social media, we could have billionaires actually committed to something good. But that’s the kind of stuff you read in fiction nowadays, not what you see more of in our real lives.
Anime News Network Purchase
…And then we have this. I just cited Anime News Network, and after reading that story about Penguin, suddenly I see a story that Kadokawa is buying Anime News Network.
Freaking heck, no.
I appreciate Anime News Network insisting that the entity will retain editorial independence. But those words are empty without action, and when they are coupled with Kadokowa’s own press release referring to the Anime News Network purchase as part of improving their “marketing” efforts. The words “news” and “marketing” should not operate in concert with each other. Yes, news organizations have been selling advertisements for centuries–that is not appropriate, but it happens, and it is up to audiences to see who is advertising and letting that identify potential conflicts of interest. I have cited enough news organizations and pop culture news web sites in my work when I knew they had ownership by multimedia corporations–Disney and Paramount, just to name two. But if this is admitted as a purchase for marketing, then still referring to the web site as “news” is laughable.
That being said, I say all of this out of evidence-based reading and as a warning: I say this to warn about what can change at Anime News Network, not what evidence is showing right now a problem. I am warning to be on the look out in the future, not saying there is already evidence out there.
But with the loss of one social media platform because it is becoming more andmore a rightwing hate-sink, and now Anime News Network being referred to as marketing, it is harder to find information in more reliable sources. Everyone has their biases, so even getting your information–not even news, just information–remains compromised. It is as much an indictment on me for not varying my information sources as it is these sources revealing their flaws. So, I want to recommend at least three places for getting more information, not necessarily as substitutes for social media and Anime News Network, but as supplements. I mentioned Jeff Harris. There’s also Anime Feminist and Otaku Magazine. Links to these resources are available in the video description, so please check them out. I’m not ignoring any biases in the sources I recommend here, but the way to deal with biases and corporation influence by owners is to diversify what you read, not just throwing out what you don’t like. (Yes, I admit hypocrisy on my part to say this after I just left social media and threw almost all of that away. But I think there is a difference between a corporation buying a news source, and a rightwing fascist-enabling jackass buying a social media platform to help make that platform more rightwing and more fascist-enabling.)
If there is any good news, and here is where I have to emphasize that my frustration is with Anime News Network being defined as a marketing platform rather than a news and information platform, it is that I hope Kadokawa obliterates the forums or does better at moderating them, because good God, the pissy whiny worst parts of the Internet there is abysmal.
Looking at reactions on social media to this purchase, the complaints were not about Anime News Network being defined as “marketing,” it was lies about Anime News Network being “woke” or “SJWs.” Asshole, “woke” and “SJW” mean “I’m not a dick, I’m not an asshole.” Being woke is a good thing; being an SJW is a good thing–because you people make up these boogeyman that don’t exist. They imagine this SJW boogeyman, this woke boogeyman–they don’t exist, there is only acknowledging that bigotry exists and that we should fight against it, as we would fight against fascism, poverty, and harm to people’s mental and physical health.
But the worst parts of the Internet just want to beat up on marginalized people and act like they had it coming. So, if you hear me asking about the ethical dimensions around referring to a news organization like Anime News Network as “marketing,” do not read my concern about those ethics as somehow related to liars who pretend to give a shit about “ethics” like how Gamergate pretended to give a shit about “ethics” but really just are perpetuating the same crap that these anti-Anime News Networks fools are perpetuating. I want Anime News Network to get better, and if that includes better pay to employees and better moderation of forums, great–I will still criticize them for using the organization for marketing, though. But if you oppose this purchase because you think Anime News Network is woke, or that Kadokowa is woke, or that Kadokowa, being from Japan, will somehow stop “wokeness,” then you’re just a contemptible piece of shit and can fuck off.
Discotek Announcements
I don’t want to just sound like I’m all negativity today. I mean, Discotek announced a lot of new anime they were releasing a few days ago. We got GaoGaiGar coming to home video. They are releasing Sonic X, too. And I can talk about my love of literature by watching the Treasure Island anime! So, all good news, all good.
Workshop on Graphic Medicine
Let’s wrap up news with something more uplifting. RHM Journal will host a workshop on graphic medicine (basically, comics representing health care) on November 16, 2022, at 2:30 PM ET. You can sign up on Eventbrite (the link is in the video description). The workshop is for scholars interested in learning more about graphic medicine and developing potential ideas for submissions for the new “Graphic RHM” column. All artistic levels and skill sets are welcome, and you don’t have to have attended a previous workshop as a prerequisite. Questions can be sent to Dr. J. Blake Scott ([email protected]) and Dr. Catherine Gouge ([email protected]).
Today’s Live Reaction: Mashle
*Pfew!* That was another long way to get to today’s live-reaction–and we’re already behind thanks to the time change.
As with every Sunday, there is a live-reaction to a new manga chapter released this morning, this time looking at Chapter 131 of Mashle!
Previously in Mashle
The last time we did a live-reaction to Mashle was back on August 28, 2022, looking at Chapter 121. What happened in that chapter?
Back in Chapter 121, in my live-reaction, I had a pretty good reaction to the story. We got to see Lance and Dot being our Zoro and Sanji, still at each other’s throats but reaching some level of understanding and appreciating each other to coordinate, come together, and fight back against the pudding-obsessed villain Epidem. (...Yes, I just mentioned Sanji and pudding when talking about another manga–enjoy.) This Lance and Dot collaboration went all the way to Chapter 123, and while I’m disappointed the two of them got their butts handed to them later in Chapter 127 to make way for the stronger opponent, their arc was still a fun one–I would look forward to seeing what comedy is mined out of it for the upcoming Mashle anime.
Speaking of which, since my last live-reaction to the Mashle manga, we did get more of a trailer for the anime, and…I’m displeased. Blame this on me thinking I can advise people in marketing how to market to their intended audience. But Mashle as a manga did not get my attention because of its fast-paced, mostly easy to follow action–which is good, don’t get me wrong, I think Komoto does excellent work staging a fight, paneling it, and making it easy enough for the eye to follow. But Mashle is a comedy series, and I think there is something lost when promoting the anime as like another generic magic fighting anime in the spirit of Black Clover, as opposed to a parody of such magic and fighting anime, something more akin in tone to Bobobo or Gintama.
After the Lance and Dot team-up ended, we cut away to other fights in Mashle–and, yeah, I’m not going to do well summarizing them, because my mind drifted. Dot and Lance have such a fun dynamic, but the other fights have been less intriguing. Some of that is my fault for not remembering which character is which. I should be happy to get my favorite stock type of manga character, a clown, in a fight–but I don’t know who this person is.
That fight, by the way, delves into the back story of the eyeglasses character, Orter–and there’s nothing wrong with Orter’s story, it’s just a little hard to appreciate the philosophy behind it on first or even second reading because it is built around complicated ideas about laws, policing, and personal ethics. In other words, it’s hard to read much into it without dismissing it as “all cops are bastards,” which oversimplifies the reading of the text. It also doesn’t help that Orter is against our hero Mashle, that he wants to exterminate non-magicians, and, oh, he looks like Harry Potter, so, yeah, kind of a trifecta of crap: pro-status quo, pro-fascism, and making readers think of TERFs. Just super. I should appreciate the manga finally giving Orter a motivation that we can understand–but it’s a motivation still built on law and order, not out of anything a smart audience can get behind when, at least here in the United States, “law and order” should be a good thing, but is the tagline for fascists that are breaking laws all over the place so to impose disorder and chaos. But here I go being political again.
And I must have missed a chapter, because I didn’t realize the character Lemon was back in the manga, starting I guess with Chapter 126. That plotline was far funnier, and kind of heartwarming, given that it’s her taming a Cerberus–and being horrified seeing the doggy getting abused. And that little shit Ochoa remains top-tier, the proper non-pervy mashup of Brina Palencia’s Tony Tony Chopper and Mineta that we were denied. It also helps that Lemon’s storyline was actually progressing Mash’s training plot–albeit still for a gag but also to increase the tension in the story, so, win all around.
So, where are we now as we head into Chapter 131? Well, Finn and his brother Rayne returned to battle against…the most bland villain I have seen. I’m sorry to complain, when I know little about the guy, but their opponent is named Master Doom–so, ripping off Doctor Doom in the name–but he has that visor that the coffee guy from Phoenix Wright wears, and he carries Cloud’s sword from Final Fantasy. I know Mashle pulls a lot from other series, but I can’t take this villain seriously–he needs a bit more of a joke motif around him to make him memorable beyond just the design. It doesn’t help that, while Finn and Rayne’s sibling problems are there, those problems have been solved, so there’s no tension in their fight against Doom. Then that bootlicker Orter shows up, and who cares about his sycophantic butt. The only shining grace is that the glorious showboat Ryoh shows up–and gets slapped down by Doom before he finishes his self-introduction. Yeah, he gets back up, so at least we have over-powered Doom versus over-powered Ryoh, so maybe something decent can come out of this fight on a visual level and a combat level, even if I’m not optimistic that this will be a very funny chapter.
But enough of that context: let’s get going and jump into today’s live-reaction to Chapter 131 of Mashle! You can read along at the Viz web site: Google “Mashle Viz” to pull up the new chapter and read along.

And remember: if you can legally vote in the United States, check your voter registration at vote.org, check where and how to vote at vote.org, and go vote for Democrats up and down the ballot! Fascism is rising; your civil rights are on the ballot; your livelihood and longevity are on the ballot–and you can oppose fascism, protect civil rights, and protect your livelihood and longevity by voting for the Democratic Party and voting against the fascist party that encouraged an insurrection on the Capitol Building! (And that’s not even getting into all the other cases of voter intimidation and violence this past week.)
Again, vote.org, vote for Democrats by November 8, and thank you for your consideration in the fight against fascism, bigotry, and utter dumb-fuckery.
Next Time
Tune in again next Sunday at 11 AM EST, when we’ll have a live-reaction to another newly released manga chapter, this time looking at Chapter 56 of PPPPPP!

After N.S. mass shooting, American family member of victims lost faith in Mounties
U.S. citizen Jennifer Zahl Bruland says the murders of her father and stepmother in Nova Scotia's mass shooting led her to stop believing in the quality of Canada's national police force.
In a Sept. 8 interview, the transcript of which was made public Thursday, Zahl Bruland told the public inquiry into the killings that the RCMP "appears to be broken," citing serious shortcomings in its response to the rampage.
Twenty-two people were killed on April 18-19, 2020, by a gunman with a record of violence who drove a replica police vehicle over a 13-hour period -- eluding police, burning homes and killing residents.
Zahl Bruland's father, John Zahl -- a U.S. navy veteran and American citizen -- and his spouse, Joanne Thomas, were among the early victims in the community of Portapique, where the couple had lived in their retirement home since 2017.
The daughter, who has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and political science, said she had once believed the RCMP to be a top-notch police force, but now, "I worry for my friends and family that rely on them for safety."
She cited a number of issues uncovered by the inquiry, including the failure to issue an Alert Ready emergency notice, the lack of a helicopter for the search and the ease with which the killer was able to buy decommissioned RCMP vehicles.
The oldest of four siblings, Zahl Bruland said she was surprised to learn from the inquiry that RCMP hadn't trained its general members to respond to active shooters in outdoor, rural, low-light environments.
She also noted the police force's failure to ask for more assistance from the neighbouring municipal police forces and said it was disturbing to learn from the RCMP that they were short on staff to cover a large, rural county.
Zahl Bruland told the inquiry's three commissioners she'd heard too often in the past two years that police "couldn't have saved anyone in Portapique," and doesn't believe that to be a definite fact.
She noted that three officers entered the community while the killer was still in the enclave and they had gone by her parents' house before it had been burned to the ground. "My parents are still alive when they arrived in Portapique," she said, while adding she didn't blame the officers for their actions.
The officers have testified their focus that night was to seek out and stop the killer, and they only entered a home of another victim, Lisa McCully, after her children called 911 to ask for help.
In the days after the killings, Zahl Bruland, who lives in Minnesota, said the RCMP's decision to only assign one officer to assist 21 of the victims' families was inadequate. She said the family liaison officer, Const. Wayne (Skipper) Bent, had too much work.
She said it seemed "very wrong" that by contrast, the family of an RCMP officer who was killed had access to two family liaison officers.
Meanwhile, Zahl Bruland said she has found being an American living in a different time zone meant she often didn't receive followup support suited to her needs.
Zahl Bruland said she found even simple services, such as a 1-800 number for mental health assistance, weren't easily accessible. She said when she called the number, she realized it didn't work for people outside of Canada.
She also told the commissioners she is paying for one of her two counsellors out of pocket. "They've also put a limit on the amount of counselling," she added.
"All services should be equally accessible and it should be kept in the forefront that each victim and family is unique .... One size does not fit all," she said.
The inquiry's final report is expected by March 31, 2023.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 3, 2022.
