24 for Nouveau Riche, TT, Swift Valor, Eru, and Aurora.
(From the OC ask meme)
For future reference please submit asks for one character at a time! /lh
From this post: “Most traumatic memory?”
Nouveau Riche: I established in this scene that she has a history of growing up in the foster care system; her most traumatic memory would definitely be from those days. However, I made the choice as the writer to not reveal any further details about this time in Nou’s life because it is her private business.
Triple Threat: See “Ward”
Swift Valor: As an EMT, Swift has seen some pretty intense medical emergencies, including a few deaths. I think either the first death or the goriest death under his care would be his most traumatic memory. He went into this job knowing that death would happen and understands intellectually that, despite his best efforts, some of it is out of his hooves. But that doesn’t mean it can’t wear on him. Or perhaps the most traumatic death he witnessed was the most avoidable one, not because of anything he neglected but maybe from a coworker’s neglect or outside circumstances of the accident that just didn’t need to happen. I can’t say for sure which incident was the worst for Swift but regardless, he has access to good therapy and remains devoted to, and efficient in, the work he does.
Erudite Spell: I don’t think he really has trauma, at least not on the same level as the others. He’s got a lot of good things going for him in his life. I’d say his most unpleasant memories are related to Swift drifting away during their tween years and how hurtful that initial drifting apart was. I have some more specific ideas for this but you’ll have to wait for the arc to see it!
Aurora Borealis: Somewhat similar to Swift, she has a job where witnessing heavy stuff is kind of part of the routine (as a soldier). It would be unrealistic to say she’s experienced NO trauma, both being in the military and eventually becoming the queen of her entire country. However, her arc will be much more about the interpersonal issues she deals with rather than any violence she witnesses; what keeps her up at night—as far as my storytelling is concerned—is worry over making the wrong choices in her political and personal lives.

Considering all the upsides, where does the social climber’s bad rap come from? People who seek to improve their station in life have been the objects of suspicion or the butts of jokes since the dawn of social mobility itself.
Molière’s Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, performed for King Louis XIV’s court in 1670, may feature popular culture’s first social climber. The play satirizes Monsieur Jourdain, the son of a rich merchant, whose aim in life is not to accumulate more wealth, but to be accepted by the aristocracy. The title itself is an oxymoron: A member of the middle class can never become a gentleman. A joke, but one of great comfort to the audience at court. Yes, they have more money than the rest of you here, but they will never have access to this room. These relationships.
By the close of the 17th century, aristocrats, merchants, and servants were crowding into theaters to see bawdy satires like John Vanbrugh’s The Relapse, in which a buffoonish Sir Novelty Fashion squanders his fortune purchasing the more impressive title of Lord Foppington. The joke had evolved: Okay, maybe they can access this room, but everyone (including the servants) knows they still can’t buy class.
In 1722, Daniel Defoe published Moll Flanders, about a woman who cons and sleeps her way into the middle class. Moll might have been seen as unscrupulously obsessed with improving her station in life, but as a widow with no social standing or means, she was also desperate. She wasn’t posing as a gentlewoman to get into great parties; she was climbing to survive.
The social climbers I’m talking about are more like Moll than Sir Novelty. Motivated by economic necessity, we see access as a means to an end, not as an end in itself. We would never squander money to get into the party; we get into the party so that other people might squander money on us.
The scorn for the climber is rich—literally. It isn’t that the wealthy don’t utilize social capital for advancement; they just do so quietly. Or, perhaps more accurately, it’s perceived as their right. Wealth, and the things it can procure—elite education, invitations to private clubs, stays at exclusive resorts—come with a cascade effect of trust, merited or not. “If you are in this space, you must be one of us.” This was precisely the genius of Shonda Rhimes’s series Inventing Anna. You get to watch the character discover—just by dropping the right name or stepping onto the right yacht—what people were willing to offer her. No questions asked.

July 26, 1922 The Gumps by Sid Smith: "Labor vs. Capital"
[ID: Andy sits at the dining room table, drinking coffee with Ephraim and his wife Amelia. They both glare at him while he raises his cup and begins an anecdote. /end] Andy: You didn't hear about me, did you? I didn't tell you about my good fortune. I made a lot of money since I saw you last. My uncle. You know I told you about that rich uncle of mine. A widow sued him for breach of promise for a million dollars. He gave me $100,000.00 to go over and settle it and I settled it for $50,000.00 and kept $50,000.00 for myself. [INFLATION GUIDE: In 2022 dollars, Bim entrusted Andy with about $1,750,000, out of which he finagled about $880,000 for Zander and himself. /end]
[ID: Amelia raises her cup as Andy sets his down. Ephraim sips stray coffee out of his saucer. /end] Amelia: Well, now I suppose you're going to spend the rest of your life loafing. Be a barnacle on the ship of industry. Sit around criticizing and ridiculing those who work for an existence. A philosopher expecting everybody to look up to you because you have money.
[ID: The couple set their dishes down to glare at Andy as he responds. /end] Andy: Oh, I don't know. I think it's a whole lot better for a man to quit after he has enough. Do you think I'm going struggling along in competition with those who are fighting for an existence? And for what? Just to leave it to somebody who will run through it! Who's going to get all your money? I'll bet you some relatives will fall heir to it that you don't even speak to now. And yet you go on struggling. Denying yourself every luxury. Not me. I'm going to spend my own money.

why I don't think the Blacks were actually that wealthy is this:
Tumblr media
"A reasonable amount of gold."
So, Harry inherits ALL of Sirius's money, house, his House-elf. Since Grimmauld Place goes to Sirius after the death of his parents, it's fair to assume that he also got all their money. He also, as we know, inherited a good chunk of gold from his Uncle Alphard. Being in Azkaban for 12 years and later living in hiding/at Grimmauld place, he probably did not spend much of that money. His one big expense is the Firebolt, which, yeah, is expensive but if the Blacks had been uber loaded like they're portrayed in fic, I don't think Dumbledore would have used the word "reasonable" to describe what was left to Harry.
Reasonable suggests to me that yeah, it's a decent amount. But it's not MORE than what Harry already had. It's not an EXTREME amount.
Another thing for me is the matter of Bellatrix's marriage. Narcissa and Lucius seem to genuinely be in love, but I don't think Bellatrix mentions Rodolphus, her literal husband, ONCE (correct me if I'm wrong but I'm fairly certain) in the ENTIRE series. She was in love with Voldemort. She probably didn't want to marry Rodolphus and clearly didn't care much about him. This suggests to me that the motivations behind this marriage were financial rather than romantic. Even Narcissa's marriage to Lucius was probably financially motivated, even though they were lucky enough to actually be a good match. Walburga married her own cousin- again, this was likely financially motivated.
The other clue is Grimmauld Place itself. Historically wealthy/aristocratic families would have a london townhouse for the season, but reside most of the time in country estates or manor houses. There's no mention of any Black family estate at all, and if there was one Sirius being the eldest male heir would have inherited it, as would Harry later. The fact that the Blacks live only in their London house (which is not even that ostentatious, it's terraced and between Muggle houses. why would they choose this.) suggests to me that any country estate they might have had was sold. I guess you could argue that Cygnus and his daughters lived there, but he was the youngest so i find this unlikely. If anything, it would have gone to Alphard. It might have passed to Cygnus upon his death, but that still leaves Walburga without.
What I think happened was that the Blacks were a typical old money family with dwindling resources. Likely Orion and Walburga did not work, and yet still clung to a lavish, aristocratic lifestyle while burning the galleons they had. Grimmauld Place is in a state of disrepair, and yeah it's been abandoned for 12+ years imo it probably started before that. Kreacher is OBSESSED with Black family heirlooms, which suggests that Walburga probably was too- likely she clung onto them as signs of her family's wealth and status, which was fading away before her eyes.
Personally I think Alphard probably inherited the bulk of what was left of the Black fortune, possibly an estate which he then either sold or gave to someone else- but presumably not Walburga, as she blasted him off the tapestry.
And the blasting of Alphard itself. Yeah Walburga hated Sirius and anyone who looked kindly on him, but imo if had she been rolling in it and money was of no concern, Alphard leaving Sirius some gold might not have been especially noteworthy to her. I believe that she was hoping that either she or Regulus would inherit the gold, and when he left it to Sirius she reacted VERY angrily. Because tbh, it might have just gone to him by default as the eldest male heir if Cygnus was dead by that time, which if this is the case seems likely because Alphard DID leave Sirius money. If it was just about him being fond of Sirius she likely would have blasted him off earlier. It seems to me like it was about the money, and to me explains why Walburga was so bitter and so possessive over her legacy.

Regarding Dean, but especially regarding Rowena, you know?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CATRIONA: Ohhh... Raggedy Ann. ROWENA: Excuse me? CATRIONA: I remember you-- a rag doll all huddled on our doorstep. (then) I swore I could see the fleas nibbling away at what was left of your dirty little body. On ROWENA, eyes lowered. Angrier and angrier as Catriona speaks-- CATRIONA: But still-- still you thought you were worthy of our magic. And when we disagreed... (giggles) Oh, how you begged. How you threw yourself down and...offered yourself to each of us-- Boyd almost took you up on it-- but I told him it would be cleaner with the pigs-- ROWENA: Enough!
Performing Dean is one thing, but we see that Rowena's performance is actually one of the most painful of all. (She's the tanner's daughter, you see, who smells of filth and death, but oh oh how she wants you to see her power and her glitz and her glamor and her prestige-)

Name: Nouveau Riche  Nicknames: Nou, Richy Rich, Hazmat  Parents: Apple Bloom and Diamond Tiara (adopted) Siblings: Ingenue Future Spouse: Slumber Party Future Children: Petal Wishes, Yorrick, Spring Delight Personality: Unlike her family of down-to-earth farmers, Nouveau Riche is a total clean freak who hates dirt. She is a germaphobe who is very particular about keeping everything clean, and hates ponies being in her personal space or intruding on her family’s farm. The high-class life that her Mother Diamond inherited is much more suited for Nouveau, but even that is tainted. As a yak living in Equestria, Nouveau is not blind to the fact that she is treated differently because she is not a pony, especially among the elites. The unequal treatment and opportunities she receives are greater than any of Nouveau’s worries about cleanliness. It is frustrating to no end and sometimes she wants to yak-smash somepony’s face in just so they’ll realize what they’re doing.

June 19, 1922 The Gumps by Sid Smith: "Just Sitting Pretty."
[ID: Andy happily stands in front of a vanity cabinet in his bedroom, tying his necktie and addressing the audience. /end] Andy: Well, I guess I'd better get my coal in. If the strike keeps up, it will just get higher. I'll just walk over and order myself about 20 tons, stick it in the basement, and you'll see smoke coming out of my chimney all winter.
[ID: Andy stands before the full bathroom sink, happily brushing his bald head with a hairbrush. /end] Andy: Yeah, I don't care if they pull a railroad strike, either. I'm not going any place. I'll just fill my house full of good stuff to eat and I'll be set. I'd like to see somebody try to make me mad.
[ID: Andy stands in his living room in full suit and tie, holding a hand mirror. /end] Andy: All the tools I'll need to make a living from now on is a pair of scissors. Just clip coupons and cash 'em, that's all. I'll have mine invested in bonds. I'll get the first dough that comes in. After they get through slipping me the coin, they can divide the rest of it among the stockholders. If there's any left.
[ID: Andy leans back on a plush loveseat and smokes a cigar. /end] Andy: If you catch Andy with a handle in his hand, you'll know there isn't any scoop, shovel or pick-axe on the other end of it. It will be a mashie, a niblick or a putter. Or maybe a croquet mallet.
