Took a break from my project for a early New Years, since I'll be busy on the real new years

I picked Danny because @capturecharlesau's comic really made me realize things about my life I should have of known beforehand. I just can't thank them enough for it

I picked Amelia because @androidcharles is such a nice person, and I just feel more confident about my story because of them. Plus they did quite a bit for the fandom this year, like the Stickmintober prompt and Ellie Rose Week

Hi Jennifer. I've heard secondhand from an agent and again from a bookshop employee on Twitter that the MG space has too few male protagonists. I feel like I've seen many MG male protags--but now I'm questioning things. Do you observe the same?

I think there are lots of MG male protags (and MANY with mixed boy-girl protags). Here's a list from earlier this year that has some gems on it, many published in the past few years. Now it could be that that agent or bookseller just don't LIKE the Boy MC books that currently exist, or don't know about them -- but they are THERE, if people want to find them.

I think there's more of a dearth when it comes to YA, actually -- while there definitely ARE YA books about boy protags, they are for sure in the minority on most shelves.

(And here's where I stop answering your question and just start ranting, feel free to stop reading!)

But also: I don't see any reason why a boy shouldn't be able to read a book about a girl -- we've all had our cootie shots, no?

The prevailing "wisdom" (gag) is that "boys will only read books about boys -- girls will read books about anything" -- but that's JUST NOT TRUE. Boys will read books about boys because that's what they are given. Girls will read books about anything because girls HAVE TO read books about everything. Often, assigned reading in school is absolute bullshit about like, war, or dead dogs, or whatever awful thing, that caters to boys because of this "wisdom" -- the girls aren't going to complain, because like ... they don't have a choice. You think they are all super excited to read Red Badge of Courage or Old Yeller or whatever? Puke!

(Not that the boys particularly want to read those either, btw -- but nobody is asking them! They are just assuming!)

In MY opinion, this is a false problem. Most boys I know (who are interested in reading), if left to their own devices, will pick up a wide variety of books featuring all kinds of protags. They just want books that are fun and cool, same as girls. It's the ADULTS that complain "oh, that book is for girls" "oh, my kid is getting LEFT BEHIND because they only publish books about GIRLS", etc. When in fact, books are for anyone. Yes, they'll certainly read all the Dav Pilkey books - but they will also read all the Raina Telgemeier books, if their parents don't stop them from doing so.

(BTW, these are THE MOST annoying conversations to have at the bookstore. I do NOT have a poker-face. So the moment somebody says something like "oh, that's a "girl book" to me, my co-workers laugh, because they can see the gleam in my eyes where I decide if today is the day I decide to just RISK IT ALL and yell at the person, then walk out in the middle of my shift and not be a bookseller anymore. lolol. #notkidding)

(These same parents will say -- OUT LOUD! -- that they can't wrap a present in cute hedgehog wrapping paper because it's "for a boy" like I am supposed to agree with them. WHO DOESN'T LIKE HEDGEHOGS???? OR they will say something like "Oh, not the rocket-ships in space wrapping paper ... it's FOR A GIRL." Um... I am a girl, I like space. I bet your kid likes space, too. SPACE IS COOL.)

(I'm not going to argue about this, btw, so please, "boy moms" -- if you want to get passionate about this somewhere, do it in your own social media, thx)
