Dancing With Our Hands Tied (Analysis)

In honnor of the International Kissgate day here is my interpretation of Dancing With Our Hands Tied:

If you want to see how important dancing references are in Taylor's discography before reading this, go take a look at the post I just reblogued with all of the times dancing is referenced in her lyrics.

This song is referencing a very important event in Taylor's life, wich is Kissgate.

If you don't know about Kissgate, I suggest that you look it up before reading the analysis as eveything will make more sense that way.

In the Reputation SS she said that she was really emotional while she wrote this song. Saying that it was about doubt and anxiety of keeping this secret long term relationship while the media was always on her. Saying that she did not know how someone could stay through all this.

VERSE 1:

I, I loved you in secretFirst sight, yeah, we love without reasonOh, twenty-five years old Oh, how were you to know, and My, my love had been frozenDeep blue, but you painted me goldenOh, and you held me closeOh, how was I to know that

Line 1:

Again referencing to the secrecy of this relationship.

Wich again, does not make a lot of sense in relation to a man.

Line 2:

Recalling how they both fell hard and fast.

Wich is also stated in Endgame:

"I hit you like bang We tried to forget it, but we just couldn't"

Line 3 and 4:

This line gives plausible deniability to whom this song is about. Wich is something that hapens a lot in her lyrics to make sure that people think it's about her really public relationship, when it is entirely about someone else.

Because at that point she talks about someone in the relationship being 25 years old.

Joe was 25 when they supposedly started dating in 2016.

But Taylor turned 25 in 2014 shortly after Kissgate and when things started to get really complicated for her and Karlie.

She is reminescing to when things were easier in her relationship and how she could not have known at that time how things would played out in the public eye and how things would need to be managed by her PR team.

Line 5:

This line gives me the feeling of something that is meant to last that is immovable.

Her love has been frozen in time just for her.

Line 6:

Her muse painted her golden.

Again using this color to describe her muse.

Interesting, even more so when you know that gold is the color used to describe Leos...

Line 7-8:

Thinking of how the other person made her feel safe and loved, and reminescing to how was she supposed to know that things would get this complicated.

PRE-CHORUS:

Line 1:

I interpret it as a subtle display of affection in public.

Subtle ways to assert that this person is yours.

She is saying that she would have loved to keep having those secrets moments in public.

Line 2:

Although they display small gestures of affection in public.

No one really know that they are together and that it is in fact this person that she loves. She keep that information close to her heart. Like in a locket that she would wear.

Line 3 and 4:

She says that her muse was reassuring her saying that nothing could separate them.

But as much as she wanted to trust her, she was anxious that something might happen and break them up.

And darling, you had turned my bed into a sacred oasisPeople started talking, putting us through our pacesI knew there was no one in the world who could take it I had a bad feeling

Line 1:

She says that her muse turned her life into something magical and sacred. Like an Oasis in the middle of the desert. Something so beautiful and unexpected that while looking at it you think it could be a mirage. Line 2:

But things could not stay that magical and sacred when people started to noticed this secret love.

Putting them through their paces:

"To test the ability or skill of a thing" They had to change their approach and tactics to preserve this sacred love from the public eye.

Line 3:

She assumed that no one could understand their love. That it would be a bad thing for it to go public. Repeating her "impending doom" feeling that this would not end well.

CHORUS:

Line 1-2, and 5-6:

Dancing is used in Taylor's discography most of the time to describe falling in love/being in a relationship.

So she is saying that they were both falling, trying to make this relationship works.

But their hands were tied:

"be unable to act freely."

They could not act on those feelings as they wanted in public. They had to keep a certain image and keep this relationship a secret. But still, they were dancing.

Line 3-4:

They were falling in love like it was their first time. This relationship is described in the album with this aspect of being real and new. Like they never experienced something like it before.

Line 7-9:

They were in love and working on their relationship.

But Taylor still cannot shake this impending doom feeling.

VERSE 2:

I, I loved you in spite of Deep fears that the world would divide us So, baby, can we dance Oh, through an avalanche? And say, say that we got it I'm a mess, but I'm the mess that you wanted Oh, 'cause it's gravity Oh, keeping you with me

Line 1 and 2:

She loves this person, even though she has this anxiety and this impending doom feeling.

Line 3 and 4:

She asks her muse if they can love each other and stay in this relationship.

Are they strong enough to go through an avalanche:

"a sudden arrival or occurrence of something in overwhelming quantities"

Like the medias suddently being on them, with incriminating pictures and videos.

An actual disaster.

Line 5-6:

She needs her lover to reassure her that they will get through all this.

She says that being with her is sometimes difficult, especially in this situation.

But she needs the person to say that she was indeed all in, knowing this.

Line 7-8:

Their love seem driven by a strong force out of their control like gravity.

BRIDGE:

I'd kiss you as the lights went outSwaying as the room burned downI'd hold you as the water rushes inIf I could dance with you again

Line 1:

In the bridge she talks about things that she would do differently is she could go back in time.

Like kiss this person when the lights are out and no one can see them (or take pictures and videos)

Line 3:

Everything going in flames around them. But she would still stay and dance with her. Line 4:

She says that if she could go back in time and have a second chance. She would handle it differently and hold this person through all the disaster that happened.

the funniest thing about this ask is that you just compared bt to h*ddlesw*ft and that, my friend, is the most APT comparison you've made today holy shit

i'm actually laughing rn. is buck miss swift in this scenario? i'm thinking yes (if only bc the progression is then to cruel summer in which he and eddie get together).

WAIT WAIT. no one asked but here's an analysis of this because i seriously can't look at my paper anymore or i'll cry myself to sleep tonight. under a cut bc that is so not fair to anyone if i didn't put one in LOL

"no, nothing good starts in a getaway car" - yeah no fucking shit

"it was the best of times, the worst of crimes i struck a match, i blew your mind but i didn't mean it, and you didn't see it" - this is like. the first time they have sex. i get that buck is like "looking for someone" but he knows it's not gonna be taylor kelly, except she honestly can't stop coming back to him. she was like... kind of into him right away weirdly, even though she kinda disappeared after 2x07/2x08

"the ties were black, the lies were white, the shades of gray in candlelight, i wanted to leave him, i needed a reason" - this is buck talking about abby

i think the pre-chorus is actually the most damning part of the song besides the bridge?

"x marks the spot where we fell apart" - treasure hunt episode, where buck is like hey we make a great team, and taylor tries to push him away, and then you go to ghost stories, and buck is the one saying they don't make a great team anymore (through his actions) "he poisoned the well, every man for himself" - this is about the way they treat each other, specifically how neither of them know how to be there for each other "i knew it from the first old fashioned, we were cursed" - yeah this is obvious lmao "it hit you like a shot-gun, shot in the dark" - this is taylor being floored when buck didn't chase after her and then suddenly wanting him back

the entire chorus is like. so them. they're in the getaway car, trying so hard to be something but they're never gonna go anywhere, because at first buck has literally JUST left abby behind, and by the time we get to taylor's return in 4x08, buck is well involved in the diaz family and is like. obviously in love with eddie.

specifically "don't pretend it's such a mystery/should've known i'd be the first to leave, think about the place where you first met me: in a getaway car" like. they can NEVER be endgame because both times they tried to start anything buck's been hung up on something that makes him unavailable, and now taylor's hung up on the past, and it's just never going to work!

the SECOND VERSE

"it was the great escape, the prison break the light of freedom on my face but you weren't thinking and i was just drinking" - this is buck using her to escape his fucked up feelings after the shooting, right? like she kisses him (she's not thinking) and he just lets it happen? he's just drinking it all in.

"well he was runnin' after us, i was screaming 'go, go, go' but with three of us honey it's a sideshow and a circus ain't a love story and now we're both sorry" - buck's trauma involving eddie and christopher is following them through this new iteration of their relationship, and once it's over, it's one of those things where i can imagine they're both sorry. like buck is sorry his heart was never in it, taylor's sorry she let herself get hurt

"x marks the spot, where we fell apart he poisoned the well, every man for himself i knew it from the first old fashioned, we were cursed" same as before "it hit you like a shotgun, shot to the heart" - the breakup! eek!

then the bridge. "we were jet-set, bonnie and clyde til i switched to the other side it's no surprise i turned you in 'cause us traitors never win" - buck just can't do it anymore, so instead of repeating his past relationships (being left), he leaves this time, because he's becoming the thing that hurt him (abby leaving)

"i'm in a getaway car i left you in the motel bar put the money in the bag and i stole the keys that was the last time you ever saw me" - literally don't know what more to say except this analysis was way too in depth for a relationship that i don't care about BUT bt and h*ddlesw*ft is the funniest comparison in the world THANK you for this

Hey guys! Welcome to the second part of my personal Starker reclist, dedicated to AUs. Last week I posted my canon-based recs, you can find them here.

I tried to incorporate as many tropes as I could, hoping everyone will find something special within their interests. So naturally I couldn’t leave this fic out of my reclist. I you need further incentive, consider this quote: “What, a little late night espionage not romantic enough for you?” Peter retorts, whipping a pistol out from his jacket and aiming it at Tony’s chest.

Summary: Peter Parker confesses his love to Tony Stark three times. Once at ten, once at fifteen and once at twenty. But you know what they say about star-crossed lovers.

Review: This lovely fic holds a very special place in my heart. I’m so invested I decided to wait until it’s finished so I can read it all in one sitting. Peter’s longing and heartbreak hurt my poor soul but I trust Jensen to give me that promised Starker endgame - I know it will be glorious when it finally comes.

Summary: Nightclub AU. Years after the events of Endgame, Tony has hit rock bottom. The Snap left him crippled, Pepper has abandoned him and has taken Morgan with her, and he's feeling old and lonely. Peter arranges a night out at the nightclub that he works at to try and cheer Tony up.

Review: I love get together fics, especially if it involves oblivious!Tony getting his shit together and going after his man. Seeing him bitter and broken after Thanos was hard, but special kudos to IronBros moments because that friendship is true goals!

Review: I’d never in a million years think about this movie as a Starker AU but gosh, this is everything I needed in my life and it completely devastated me but I loved every minute of it. As a devoted monoshipper, I was surprised to realize that I got emotionally involved with all pairings, even more so with Starker, which totally paid off. Gorgeous, powerful and heartfelt. God bless SFL.

A+ characterization, lovely build up, infuriating cliffhangers and the wholesome happy ending we all deserve. This is the kind of fic that leaves you a bit depressed once it’s over, because you suddenly realize you’ll never read it for the first time ever again. Great worldbuilding (I LOVE the scarring concept, so unique and fitting to these characters), A+++ Tony characterization (the wit and the self-hate are so spot on I could weep) and a journey full of longing, until they finally get to be on the same page.

Review: I keep coming back to this story because it’s such a fascinating and unique take on this trope. Very well thought and put together - the world building is fantastic, the sex sequences are breathtaking, and Tony’s gentle thoughtfulness makes me wanna cry.

Peter’s underage but this fic is carefully written and pretty tame, so I’d rec it to anyone looking for the good old “they probably shouldn’t, but then again nothing’s happening” trope.

Summary: The first time Tony got punched in the face by nobody there, he had a lot of very complicated feelings about it that mostly boiled down to, "I deserve this." A pain-sharing soulmate AU.

Review: Tuesday truly is the queen of soulmate AUs, we have no other choice but STAN. First of all, I adore the concept here - being such a sucker for whump, this could easily become my favorite soulmate trope. As usual, her Tony voice is perfect and his devotion to Peter hits my fragile heart every time. Kudos for the soft and hopeful ending. The series has been discontinued but the sequels are very much worth the read, if you’re up for it :)

Review: My identity porn thirst might be showing but who cares, I want these two idiots pining after each other in every possible way. This was such a fun and exciting ride! The suspense had me legit freaking out and their get together was lovely and wholesome. I particularly adored how thoughtful and sweet Tony was dealing with Peter’s insecurities, that was handled really well. A treat!

The only Starker mpreg I’ve ever read is so so good and adorable I can’t help smiling every time I think about it. I just love their dynamics, the soft domesticity, the cute bantering, and the fact that Peter has one baby daddy all wrapped around his little finger but what else is new ;)

This amazing longfic delivers it all with a well-paced, delicious slow burn told from Peter’s POV, which is always a delight to read and makes you fall even more in love with him. Clever, organic dialogue and a sexual tension so palpable you can almost taste it. This is a gem. Make sure to check their other works.

• Two White, Two Black, One Pink by @starkerforlife6969 (E) poly fic: Peter/Tony, Peter/Steve, Peter/Bucky, Peter/Strange Summary: Peter has three (maybe one day: four) men in his life who mean the world to him. Review: Ugh, this fic is pure bliss. It has legit ruined me for any and all other poly fics. Words just cannot describe how gorgeous, poetic and unique SFL’s writing is, or how deeply it has affected me. So if you enjoy Mafia AUs, poly fics and soft-but-also-bamf!Peter taking care of Tony AND being taken care of by the men he loves, give this a chance and experience transcending storytelling.

It has so many elements I love in fic: cute flirting, clever banter, hot sex, soft domesticity, boys being reasonable and talking their problems out for a change. If you’re looking for something light, sweet and honest, this series is a must read!

Fic writer questions I never get asked

What date did you make your AO3 profile? What date did you post your first fic?

Joined AO3 on 7 January 2014. 6 July 2012 is the date on my earliest fic (it’s backdated).

I have a very hard time believing that I wasn’t writing fic back in 2010 and didn’t have an AO3 by 2012. This does not match up with my mental timeline of me as a member of fandom.

Do you cross-post your work?

I cross-posted my FF.net stuff to AO3, but I don’t actively cross-post the stuff I’ve written since I got an AO3 anywhere. Mostly because Check Please is centrally located on AO3 and after that I couldn’t be bothered to deal with the formatting.

What’s your fic with the most comment threads? The most bookmarks? Are the top 5 of those categories basically the same, and basically the same as the top 5 kudos?

Top in comment threads is Save (Avatar) by like 25. Top in bookmarks is Slip (Harry Potter) by 37. There’s less overlap than I would have thought, actually! Disrespect and Inconvenience (both Avatar) make all three lists. Five Queer Avengers and One Straight One makes two of them, as does Slip. All the top comment thread ones are from Disrespect!verse. I Need Direction to Perfection (Check Please!) hits top 5 in bookmarks, but nothing else.

What’s the word count of your longest fic or series?

I Need Direction to Perfection is the longest fic at 28,466 words, Disrespect!verse is the longest series at 57,908.

What’s your most underrated fic?

Fragile Lives/Shattered Dreams, which contains non-endgame but not-insignificant Zutara. It was a good thing I knew going in that that made it fairly niche, or the reception would’ve broken my heart.

Does your early work contain any writing sins?

I should REALLY go back and add paragraph breaks to the stuff I transferred from FF.net.

Have you ever had a work podficced?

I do my own! I’ve never had anyone request to do one of my fics, which may be because they figured I’d get around to it eventually/I beat them to it. And I was the most prolific podficcer in Check Please, which was my home base fandom for quite some time.

Have you posted any podfics? Fanvids? Fanart?

Podfics, yes, my fics and other peoples’. Fanvids, yes. Fanart—a moodboard to a fic that was a sequel to a reverse bang, other people’s art (stuff made by my request for the fic or as part of a big bang/reverse bang), manips as podfic covers. I’ve got some moodboards in other people’s fics for reverse bangs. Posts that are specifically FOR fanart? No.

Are there any trends in your favorite ships?

Brittle characters finally getting to be loved. “I will choose you against all sense and reason, against everything the world has to say, over and over” makes me go feral.

Do you have fandoms you’ve written a lot for? Fandoms you’ve only written a one-off for?

If you asked me what fandoms I’ve written for and I didn’t have access to my AO3, I’d say Marvel, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Check Please! and Avatar all have a lot of work in them. Fandoms with one-offs include Angel, 13 Reasons Why, The Italian Word for Kisses, Les Mis, Supernatural (plus a podfic), and Vampire Academy. Untamed currently only has a fanvid up. Several sub-fandoms of Marvel and Star Trek only have one as well.

What fandom got you into fandom?

CATS. No, really. I distinctly remember a friend sending me ff.net and going “hey look here’s a website where people write stories about the characters!” and realizing it had other fandoms too. The first one I ever wrote for was Star Trek, but I was probably reading Harry Potter back then as well.

Do you have a strategy for summaries?

Sometimes I’ll save a darling for the summary. Otherwise I’ll try and find a line or part of a scene that will tell the reader basically what they’re getting into. A lot of the Avatar ones just came to me like the rest of the fic, which I recognize is not helpful advice. Never say you’re bad at summaries. I usually have no way of knowing if the summary is a bad representation of the fic before I read it, but if you tell me up front in the summary that you’re bad at them, I’m not going to have confidence in the story either. Only apologize for your art if it harms people, not just because you think it’s bad. Do not apologize for taking up space.

Do you use beta readers? For what? Do you have a go-to beta?

I never seek out a beta specifically for SPAG (spelling and grammar) although betas for other things and betas assigned by events will usually have some commentary on my commas or phrasing. But the only thing I tend to actually make mistakes on that I don’t later catch in a reread is tenses. (You know what’s amazing for copyediting, especially tenses? Recording the fic. I’ve caught like four tense errors while podficcing my own work that I’ve read with my eyeballs over and over and spotted nothing wrong.) I’ll seek out a beta if a) a fic has been giving me a lot of trouble and needed a lot of rewriting and I’m no longer confident in its internal consistency, b) for canon, if I’m in a hurry or didn’t actually consume all the relevant canon, or c) for sensitivity readers/subject matter experts. That means I think I’ve only ever had two people, maybe three, beta for me more than once.

I refuse to tag my work “no beta” or any derivative thereof because my ex once told me I didn’t need to come with a warning label and I’ve been willfully misinterpreting that ever since.

Task 24 - OOC About Your Character

1. What do you want to get out of playing this character(s)?

To see him and his story develop, especially with relationships.

2. Describe your character(s) with three words.

Strong, fierce, caring.

3. What made you decide to write this muse?

Liam was my first muse in this game, and I always wanted to play someone that went against typical fantasies of wealth and power, instead someone simple-life oriented, quiet, reserved, cold who could develop into something more if unlocked.

4. If you could change one event in your muse’s life (in their main or canon verse), what would you change?

Nothing really, everything is carefully crafted to put Liam in the mindset he needs to be in; I already re-wrote his history when I left the game and came back, to flesh him out better.

5. If you could tell your muse one thing, what would you tell them?

Don’t be afraid to open up and love again.

6. If you could give your muse one gift, what would you give them?

He’s not very sentimental or materialistic, but if possible, maybe one more day with his wife that would let him get closure.

7. If you had to take one positive thing away from your muse, what would you take away?

His unwavering conviction: He has his beliefs, he has his loyalties, and those don’t stray, and it’s an admirable trait to have a strong conviction that you don’t let falter.

8. If you could “borrow” one aspect of your muse and apply it to yourself or your own life, what would you borrow?

His confidence in himself and his beliefs, to not care so much what others think.

9. Do you genuinely want your muse to be happy? What do you think would make them most happy in life?

I would love Liam to be happy, I thought there was a chance at first, but that fell off; since then, it seems the options are there, but it’s on him to be more open to allow for it. Clearly the man has lived a violent, angry, and lonely life, one that he created himself because of his nature. He hasn’t allowed himself to love since his wife passed (by his hands in a blood rage), and he hasn’t allowed himself to love again. There’s been a few that have nearly unlocked that, but it’s not until he allows himself to admit it and forgive himself, that he’ll ever be truly happy.

10. Do you enjoy putting your muse through angst? What do you think would break their heart the most?

I do, even if he doesn’t seem ‘angsty’, fact is stuff bothers him inwardly and he worries. He just doesn’t like to show weakness or too many sides to himself. He has been more open, and recently been questioning some of his actions. Hurting him the most would be him harming someone he cares deeply about.

11. What do you love about your muse?

His confidence, and again, his unwavering conviction. His simple-life mindset is also something I greatly appreciate.

12. What do you hate about your muse?

His coldness and closed off mindset.

13. What about your muse amuses you?

The fact that pop-culture references just go flying over his head, because he just does not care a thing about film or TV.

14. What about your muse makes you sad?

The fact that he feels so lonely despite his friends.

15. How would you describe your muse to someone about to meet them, in person, for the first time?

He’ll be cold, distant, a bit stand offish. May be a bit intimidating, and maybe a bit too matter-of-fact in speaking, seems to lack any real filter. If you can accept that and work past it, he’s a good friend to have though.

16. Would you like your muse as a person if you met them in real life?

Probably, but it’d be hard for me to feel comfortable to call him a friend; I’d be pretty intimidated around him until I got to know him.

17. In what ways are you better than your muse? In what ways are they better than you?

I’m more open, empathetic, able to befriend people easier, but Liam has a confidence and conviction that I lack and wish I had. I wish I could care less about what people think of me, and be more confident in who and what I am.

18. Why do you think you connect to your muse?

We both care deeply about people we love, we’re both a bit quieter, and both of us aren’t the most social of butterflies; while Liam would prefer to sit at home wood working and working on cars, I’d more than happily sit at home and write or watch movies.

19. What aspect of your muse’s personality is most important to you? What aspect of your muse’s personality do you think is most important to them? Is it the same? Why or why not?

Again, it’s his pure and unwavering confidence and conviction. I think that probably is the same with Liam as well, holding onto his identity is so invaluable to him, because if he loses that he’ll lose control and that’s when he’ll slip back into what he used to be. He struggles with the fact that he’s a violent, insatiable killer, but at the same time has compassion for life and doesn’t WANT to just attack and kill. And he has to make sure he accepts that aspect of him, of what he WANTS to be, so he can balance that against what he can be. His confidence and conviction helps maintain that balance.

20. Has your character(s) changed over the time that you have been playing them? How have they changed?

While Liam’s fundamentals, his rules to live by and moral convictions have mostly stayed the same. He has slowly opened up more, been more open to listen and talk with people; though, he doesn’t often talk about himself, he can let a bit of his past slip in here or there. He’s learned to not look at others as potential enemies or victims, but instead daring to call some of them friends. He’s able to laugh more, joke more, hopefully someone’s willing to push that to the next level someday.

I’m a massive film buff, so almost every movie is a favorite to me in some fashion. I adore Star Wars for several reasons, not all of them good. Maybe my favorite movie is probably a toss up between The Big Lebowski or No Country for Old Men, any film with incredible dialogue really. But then I also absolutely love beautiful BS like the MCU films and got shivers during the Portals scene in Endgame, so yea... no idea really.

6. Favorite book -

Currently: The Immortal Irishman - Timothy Egan (This needs to be made into a movie)

7. Favorite vacation spot -

My favorite vacation I ever went on is a toss up between trip with friends to Portland for a wedding, and Chicago for Star Wars Celebration, but I’ve always wanted to visit Ireland. I intend to try next year.

8. Favorite Disney movie -

The Lion King (I’m basic bitch like that, don’t at me.)

9. How did you first get into role playing?

I started playing back when I was around 13 or 14, back on AOL, playing a Jedi in a D&D like setting... because that’s what I knew. People were accepting of it, and it was some of the greatest experience. I love story telling.

10. What was your first platform? If it was something other than Tumblr, what made you get into Tumblr?

AOL. And why Tumblr? AOL moved to Greatest Journal, which died, and moved to Insane Journal, and I met a girl there who told me about Tumblr RP, which I said ‘that sounds stupid’... and now I’m here. So there’s that. I still really don’t know what I’m doing half the time on Tumblr, no idea how to discover games on this platform, lol.

11. What’s a grammar rule you find yourself breaking or ignoring a lot?

100% it’s tenses. Past/present, I just write how I talk and it’s bad writing, I know. I will also simultaneously explain way too much in depth, and other times get ridiculously lazy writing in-depth.

12. Are there any languages besides English in which you think you could comfortably roleplay?

Just English. I’ve tried to learn other languages, but for whatever reason it’s very hard for me to wrap my mind around sentence structure and grammar rules in other languages.

13. Do you listen to music while your write?

Depends. If it’s just basic writing, an easy-going scene, probably not? I can get distracted from time to time; however, if I’m trying to get into a specific mood most definitely. Or if I feel a scene is heading somewhere that needs a good soundtrack? I’m a sucker for soundtracks in film, and music can really drive my mood (which is why it can be a distraction). And sometimes I write a scene specifically because I was hearing music that put me in that mood.

14. Are you a morning, day, evening, or night writer?

Evening. Which is why changing positions at work will help me, when I start working more during the day. When I work at night it’s hard for me to get up and get going enough in the morning to write.

15. How does tiredness affect your writing?

Do you know how many times I write something exhausted, and when I come back to read it I absolutely hate it? It affecs me greatly...

16. What is your biggest obstacle to writing every day, if time doesn’t count?

Motivation, mood. I’m up and down in my moods, and sometimes I’m feeling down, exhausted, both, or sometimes I just feel inadequate in my writing and hate writing because I judge my abilities and suddenly don’t want to write.

17. How many drafts is a paralyzing amount?

None? It’s more my mood and how far I get behind that’s paralyzing, but when I’m not feeling down or depressed, I’m in a normal mood or a great mood, I can write 30 threads in a single sitting and not miss a beat. I’m sure others can attest to how far I can turn around a reply when I’m on my game. (probably annoyingly).

18. Is there anything character-wise or writing style-wise that you can’t stand?

It’s probably Godmodding, it takes away from the fun of writing WITH people if you’re trying to control their actions.

19. What kind of anonymous questions are your favorite?

Things that make me think about my character, or have my character think. Things that make me really develop my character’s mind.

20. What is your weakest point in writing? Angst, fluff, dialogue, etc.?

I love dialogue in film, so maybe it’s a bit ironic that writing dialogue can easily be an achilles heel for me. It’s hard for me to write fluff or small talk, because I’ve personally never been very good at small talk, and focusing that in my writing is difficult. Fluff is kind of the same way, because it’s all romantic and cheesy and really? I feel a bit embarrassed when writing it. Though that’s more or less for some characters more than others. Murad I can get a bit more fluffy and small talky because I can be outwardly weird with him, where as Liam... his quiet reserve and demeanor make those difficult.

I wanted to touch up more on my Endgame AU, specifically the Time Heist scene. I’ll also point out that the most of the protagonists (and Kaiba because only he can pull off Tony Stark) switch around to match each Avenger. An example is Yusei would be like Scott, with the time travel plan, but sometimes Yuma will be him. Or for most of Rhodey’s scenes, that would be Yuya. So this won’t matchup perfectly for the whole movie. Im not good at coming up with stories, so the plot it pretty much the same as Endgame, just with Yugioh characters.

NOTE: I came up with these before VRAINS ended. Also, some spirit characters have their own bodies.

*CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM THE YGO SERIES*

SPACE & MIND: Yugi, Kaiba, Yuma, and Astral. Since Kaiba is Tony, Yugi is Steve. No need for an explanation there. So these two, along with Yuma and Astral try to get the Space and Mind Stones. And with the failure of the Tesseract, I though it would be sweet to have Kaiba actually talk to his real father (even though we know nothing about his and Mokuba’s birth parents). And in case you guys were curious, the Battle of New York from the first film would consist of the original DM cast.

TIME: Yusei. He gets the stone I paired him with. I’m sure he would also come up with putting the stones back too.

REALITY: Atem and Yuya. A friend of mine headcanon’s Atem having PTSD after everything he’s been through, and I agree. Like Thor, he’s struggling with feeling like he failed at protecting people he loves. Yuya’s been there too, but he’s trying to be more hopeful about it and get the job done. I’m still toying with whether or not the four boys have separate bodies in this AU because they deserve it.

POWER: Jaden and Yubel. Let’s face it, Yubel as Nebula is too perfect not to do. And since they would refuse to work with anyone else, Jaden’s going along with it.

SOUL: Yusaku and Ai. Yusaku fits Nat’s senses of logic and justice. I can see him taking things over after the Snap. As for Ai, let’s face it, his behavior this last season really is perfect for what Clint does. In this verse, the other LI victims vanish, along with their Ignis (yeah, they’re alive in this). So Ai goes rogue trying to cope, which results in him using a SOLtiS android. ANYWAY, back on track. To get the Soul Stone, they need to make a sacrifice. In this version, Ai makes it. After everything that poor guy has been through, there’s no way he’s going to let Yusaku die. Still, using this with that finale, thinking of this before we came close to it, really breaks my heart. ;_;

And in case anyone was curious about who would do the snap to bring everyone back, it’s Yuma and Astral in Zexal III form. Out of everyone, they would definitely have the best resistance to the Stones powers. Like Banner, Yuma would suffer some damage, but merging with Astral has decreased it.

are there are songs from reputation that you think work really well for delena?

A WONDERFUL question, anon!!! I went slightly overboard. In my defense, the intersection of Taylor and TVD is one of my great loves.

Firstly: reputation as an album has its own, overall story arc, which fits Delena pretty neatly! Just as reputation begins with the very rock bottom, and has to work its way upwards to the happily-ever-after which is truly earned because it’s found where there seems to be no hope – so, too, Damon and Elena meet each other in each of their darkest moments. Damon has lost and been betrayed by Katherine, Elena is still devastated by her parents’ death. Damon is distanced from his humanity; Elena is far from her true magnetically charismatic self. But they see and recognize each other, even through their pain. And they love each other. They find peace together, in the midst of all the darkness and craziness and people insisting it can never work.

That said, there are some individual songs that really scream “DELENA”

“…ready for it?” is the “it is right, just not right now” of songs. As such, it is more from Damon’s perspective than Elena’s – as soon as Elena figures out “I know I’m gonna be with you” she does not “take her time,” she makes the jump straight from 0 to 100. Also, the line “in the middle of the night in my dreams, you should see the things we do, baby”, paired with the restraint of the next line insisting on taking time, is a little reminiscent of Friday Night Bites, wherein Damon says he’s going to sneak into the Gilbert house in the middle of the night and do with little cheerleader Elena whatever he wants…and then he breaks in and just tenderly watches her sleep.

“End Game” has three perspectives, so if you squint I think it can be about the love triangle: Damon proclaims, “I got a bad boy persona, that’s what they like / you love it, I love it too cause you my type / you hold me down and I protect you with my life”. Stefan’s verse is both a little gentler and a little more cautious: “For all your beautiful traits and the way you do it with ease / for all my flaws, paranoia, and insecurities / I made mistakes and made some choices that’s hard to deny…I’ve passed days without fun, this endgame is the one”. (Bonus points for “it’s easier to ignore it, believe me, ” because Stefan is King of Denial.) And finally, we find Elena’s perspective in the bridge: “I don’t wanna be just another ex-love you don’t wanna see / I don’t wanna miss you like the other girls do.” She doesn’t want to lose either of them – but it’s the one who “calls my bluff on all my usual tricks” that she eventually chooses.

“I Did Something Bad” is not a Delena song. I’d posit that the first verse is Katherine and the second verse is Rebekah.

“Don’t Blame Me” is more of a Damon/Katherine song, but there’s something kind of charming about imagining a Damon in-love-with-Elena saying “don’t blame me, love made me crazy” when he’s accused of doing something nice or self-sacrificial.

“Delicate” reminds me a lot of pre-relationship s4 Delena, when Elena has just turned and is most self-conscious about who she is and how she’s perceived by her friends and family. Damon looks at her and sees not a problem to be fixed, but the woman he loves, the most alive he’s ever seen her. Also “sometimes when I look in your eyes, I pretend you’re mine, all the damn time” is a big time Delena mood.

“Look What You Made Me Do” is sort of the universal humanity-switch song.

“So It Goes” is one of Taylor’s saddest songs, tbh, because the phrase “so it goes” expresses a kind of determined inevitability. And in the past – in “Style” and in “You Are In Love” – she’s used the phrase to describe the way that relationships progress, how things fall into place despite difficulties. Even though he’s been out and about with other girls, they fall back together because they can’t stop thinking about each other. Relationships that start with one look in a dark room progress inevitably to pictures kept in an office downtown. In 1989 particularly, Taylor insists stubbornly that as long as you have the courage to stay, things can work out. As long as nobody leaves, things move along a set pathway: so it goes. But with “So It Goes”, the track, what happens inevitably isn’t staying together, it’s not the relationship growing closer and more real. It’s falling together and falling apart, and “doing a number” on each other. What’s fated is the whole progression of believing that you’ve found something to keep, and then finding it’s just another thing to lose. Destiny becomes fatalism. And this, long story short, is pretty s5 delena. For a moment, it looks like the love that pushed them both to be better versions of themselves is just going to twist and fall apart, like everything else that’s disappointed them in the past. The magnetism and chemistry is still there - “'cause we break down a little, but when I get you alone, it’s so simple” – but now it looks like it could be leading them to their doom.

“Gorgeous” fits pretty neatly into s3 Delena, particularly that one time when Damon is distracting Rebekah and Elena is distracting Stefan and they’re both mad about it. Also, “you should think about the consequence of you touching my hand in a darkened room” is CLEARLY the hand-holding in the motel-room-of-sexual-tension, and the consequence is making out on the ice machine and embarrassing Jeremy.

“Getaway Car” is not a Delena song, as it is pretty clearly a Katherine song: “us traitors never win…that was the last time you ever saw me”. But it does kind of describe the season 3 finale moment when Elena says she picks Stefan, “but maybe if we had met first…” She was the first to leave, because she was thinking of the place where they first met – but she was wrong about where they first met, and that changed the whole arc of the story.

“King of My Heart” is a nice counter-point to “…ready for it?”, encapsulating how as soon as Elena realizes she loves Damon, she is “all at once” totally confident, totally committed, all-in. “Your love is a secret I’m hoping, dreaming, dying to keep” is very Delena, as is “is this the end of all the endings? my broken bones are mending”. “Baby, all at once, this is enough.”

“Dancing With Our Hands Tied” is another s4-5 early relationship fate-fighting bop. “I’d kiss you as the lights went out, swaying as the room burned down, I’d hold you as the water rushes in if I could dance with you again” particularly reminds me of “I wanted to dance with you today”.

“Dress” is THE Delena song, because everyone thinks it’s just about sex - but it’s about someone seeing who you are, and about belonging to someone so deeply that it’s written all over you. It’s about all the things which define you suddenly having a new meaning because of how truly you know you are loved. “Everyone thinks that they know us, but they know nothing” = “What do they know about us?”. “Even in my worst times, you could see the best of me” = “I like you now, just the way that you are.” She doesn’t?? want him like a best friend????

“This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” is a pretty great anthem for Damon “the fun brother” Salvatore and Elena “just as crazy as me” Gilbert. Y’all know I love forgiveness and believe it is the truest kind of strength, but Elena and Damon both have petty sides, for sure. This song is the moment where Elena walks in on Damon and the boys playing a drinking game to celebrate Katherine’s demise, and she says if anyone’s going to drink to it, she is.

“Call It What You Want” feels like a mid-s6 song to me, before Elena’s gotten her memories back, but when she’s beginning to realize just how lucky she is to have Damon back. She doesn’t fully understand it yet – “call it what you want” – but she knows somehow that despite everything, this is where she belongs: “And I know I make the same mistakes, every time / bridges burn I never learn / at least I did one thing right.” “You don’t need to save me, but would you run away with me” marks the decision to become human together.

“New Year’s Day” is sort of the perfect song for all the bookends of Damon and Elena’s story. First, “there’s glitter on the floor after the party…you and me from the night before”: her eighteenth birthday party, the first time she realized she loved him. “I stay when you’re lost and I’m scared and you’re turning away”: no matter what, they always survive. “I want your midnights”: the epic moments, the night of Miss Mystic Falls, the night at the motel, the night of the meteor shower thunderstorm – “but I’ll be cleaning up bottles with you on new year’s day”: the everyday moments, cooking and sitting together on the sofa and going to parent-teacher conferences. But midnight and new years day also symbolize the wild, powerful, heightened life of immortality and their peaceful, homey life with their family. The song ends on “there’s glitter on the floor after the party…you and me forevermore”: Alaric and Jo’s wedding, when they decided they’re going to get married and be human together.
