That viral post that's going around about how people who write "book quality" mlm fic are too "normal" to publish and have real jobs so only "weird" people publish their "shitty" fanfic is so completely out of touch with reality and I am giving a massive side eye to everyone reblogging it.
Not only is it completely, easily verifiably untrue (you cannot enter any professional writing space without tripping over a dozen grizzled scifi writers who got their start by filing off the serial numbers and publishing their Star Trek fanfic even going back decades ago??? it's a whole thing?? plus how can you look at the mlm category on Amazon right now and say with a straight face that people aren't publishing shitty Spirk and Stucky fanfic??? Oh, honey...) it's also the perfect example of this kind of sneering elitism that true artists would never sully themselves by seeking profit, they do it only for the purity of the thing that always somehow leads back to, "no one should be paid to make art, actually."
The only reason you're seeing more published fanfic right now has nothing to do with the idealistic purity of your hypothetical government employee written smut of the past vs the debased scribbles of those awful straights of today and everything to do with the fact that a) self-publishing has created a voracious readership that wants a ton of content so it's become a viable, flexible income stream for many, especially disabled people b) anyone can publish now with self-publishing tools so there are less gatekeepers and c) lockdown got a lot of people into fandom and therefore writing who never tried it before.
And if you really think there's no "shitty" published mlm and no "book-quality" m/f writing out there that started as fanfic, then you are clearly not a reader so why are you even talking about this?
#love how they manipulated people into spreading that post by making it seem like a cishet vs gay thing#when the real message is OP thinks trying to sell your writing is cringe and 'weird' and 'normal people' with jobs would never#which would of course never have flown on the fandom website#so they played into the queer shipping is purer than cishet shipping puriteen thing#and it worked!#because my god people are gullible#this is the direct pipeline that leads to AI thievery#''normal' people write for the joy of it anyway so why do you need pay? you are just greedy and 'weird'!'#'oh no this isn't about who we get to call cringe and who gets to profit from art it's about um...#(quick what's a hated m/f ship?).. oh uh 'shitty' REYLO#and not our super pure uh... (spirk is still popular right? lets throw in that avengers one too to make it seem timely) stucky!'#I'm sorry if I have no sense of humor about this but the year is 2024 and people are still way too ready to sneer#about writers trying to earn a fucking living in the shittiest timeline#and i need you to look deep into yourself and ask you why it's so important to you to tell yourself that only people writing what you like#are 'normal' with real jobs and to vilify everyone else as 'weird' and 'shitty'#for trying to make an income during a financial fucking crisis#i would say sorry for ranting about this but I'm not sorry because wtf#write whatever you want#publish whatever you want#there is no moral fucking purity in what the content is#and one thing certainly doesn't make you more 'weird' or 'normal' than the other#like there is soooo much shitty mlm that started as fanfic???#that post is 100% OP made up some guys to get mad about and called them relyos for the clicks#writing#publishing#writblr#writeblr#i wasn't going to tag this anything but you know what fuck it I'm mad#i had like 5 more tags but tumblr cut me off which is fair 😅#fan fiction

That one anon mentioning that people were arguing about the same ship but the movie vs tv version is sending me because the same thing happened to me in my previous fandom. It is the reason I left.
Basically I’m sure you’re aware of Star Trek and Spirk and there being multiple versions of the characters. AOS is the movie version and I was personally just into the ship so I liked all versions of them but being into AOS is bad and cringe and will get people to vague post about art and fics because how dare you be okay with the AOS versions of the characters. The fandom was mostly AOS fans when I joined but the new shows have brought a lot of fans that are very into virtue signaling so ofc they have to trash AOS and avoid anything to do with it lest they be labeled sexist or something equally stupid. Not saying it’s not fair to hate AOS those people are valid in their opinions but it feels like weird virtue signaling to make it so much of your personality and to gatekeep anyone who like the same fucking ship as you.
--
Ahaha. God, yes, I remember.
AOS sucked because it took a giant dump all over the vibes of original Trek and did stupid shit like killing off Spock's mom. "Boo hoo, you can't like new K/S" is not, however, one of the sensible reasons to be annoyed about it.
And now that we have even more Trek set in the same era, it's even dumber to still be crying about AOS.

i'll never understand people who say tumblr posts about teens who wrote essays on ships and fandoms are fake posts automatically because i can assure you that autistic hyperfixation combined with plucky-teen ingenuity can create many excuses to write about fandom related topics in class
examples below
ALL of my creative writing projects i ever did were "secretly" fanfiction- all of them, i think maybe one wasn't but even that, i'm sure was a reskin of some anime characters i can't remember now. my main muses were star trek characters.
there was one english teacher who actually encouraged open topic papers on things relating to the subject in any way you want (she gave the example of cookies being at a party in one scene so a student a previous year had written a paper on cookies and the history of cookies) so OBVIOUSLY i wrote an essay on shipping after reading romeo and juliet and i only got points knocked off because i didn't clarify why one of my sources (andrew hussie/homestuck) qualified as a good source on shipping quadrants. i also once wrote a star trek fanfic where they visited a planet where the events of animal farm had taken place and the enterprise crew just sort of how to deal with that (i might have this one on a flashdrive somewhere???)
i actually made a board game based on the oregon trail for a class.... and used the torchwood cast as the "pieces" and some of the chance/community chest equivalents would effect you differently depending on the character you were playing (was destroyed by some assholes, but we did get to play it in class, which was fun!)
my US history teacher actually banned me from using star trek characters because i used them as analogies for EVERYTHING (branches of government, representations of different historical figures in power points- we made a fake newspaper once and i called it the "Enterprise Daily" and filled some other areas to make it look more legit like an obituary full of names that mean "red" and of course a spirk marriage announcement) and i actually got sent to the principal's office because OBVIOUSLY i pushed the envelope too far by putting a transparent picture of william shatner over EVERY slide of an otherwise pristine power point presentation but the principal didn't do anything and sent me outside while he talked to the teacher. (i wasn't in TROUBLE, but i was still heavily discouraged from doing that again)
i was on a speech and debate team and literally acted out the sherlock reichenbach fall in a duos category- we never placed, but it was a lot of fun
none of these were an "and everyone clapped!" moment for me and were VERY cringe, but they were still super fun and... honestly a lot of them helped me engage with the material way better than i would have in any other setting. most teachers (save that US history teacher) didn't really care as long as i met the other parameters of the project (see homestuck shipping source not being sufficient) as that's the goal at the end of the day: to meet the standards of the rubric. i only totally bombed on one project, but the teacher let me redo it and the fandom stuff wasn't the problem. teachers don't want to see you fail most of the time. if you ever got a low grade on a project because it had fandom stuff in it, i guarantee you just didn't link it believably enough.
i would be surprised if anyone on this site hadn't snuck their fursona into an art project or an anime gif into a powerpoint or a pokemon into a diorama about the animal kingdom or some fanart into a brochure or- oh- well, you get it

i love your attitude about life it's amazing keep it up queen, and btw i haven't even seen succ but after seeing the gifs of them... now im shipping tg, bless
god bless you omg ty for your support 🙏 i simply think ppl shouldn’t be shamed for enjoying what they do in their personal way OR enjoying something for a certain reason. if someone only enjoys succ for a ship? guess what? that’s a okay! that’s absolutely fine! it is none of your business how they consume the show and if they put out only content of that ship that is fine too! shipping has been the backbone of fandom since its birth, so mfs acting like it’s ruining media is fucking hilarious to me. spirk and msr shippers have been around since before some of these mfs have been born lol. and acting like tg shippers have overwhelmed and overtaken the content for succ is laughable too; there is an abundance of gen succ content or character specific/ other ship content, just say you saw a tg post and got mad lol. cringe culture is just so boring to me and deifying a show to the level some ppl do to succ even more so.
and!!! woohoo! another to the fold! great to hear it man, and thanks for the support again! 🥰

scones is just a favorite because i really love McCoy and Scotty, and hey why not just mash them together... besides this is so cringe but Scotty is genuinely just such a comfort character i could give a shit less who he's shipped with as long as he's happy. #cringe

i don't think reddie had more cultural clout than stucky, i think ppl didn't wanna ask stan lee bc they thought he'd get a hard attack
that's not a risk with king, he's done so much coke he's probably immune
no no no im not saying reddie had more cultural clout at ALL in terms of ladder rungs it's like
destiel, spirk
prettty much everything else incl. stucky, reddie, etc
azcrow
im just saying itd be funny if stan lee went who? the kid with asthma? re: if there were gay people in there (mcu). ppl could ask stephen king about reddie cause it was cringe fail no cultural clout (no consequences to asking) and in the equal opposite direction no one ever thought to ask anyone At Marvel about stucky because it had cringe fail no cultural clout wasnt on the radar at all

20 Questions, Writer’s Edition!
I was tagged by my main elf @euriipides 🧝‍♀️
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
At the moment, 53.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
404K
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
I've written for Star Trek, Voltron, the Flash/Arrow/Arrowverse, Miraculous Ladybug, and The Old Guard. I've written one-shots, usually prompt fills for a bunch of others.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
In It To Win It  (Voltron: Legendary Defender)
Letters From Across the Universe (Star Trek AOS)
What's In A Name? (Arrowverse)
In All But Name (Miraculous Ladybug)
Lattes, Prequels and Wrong Tables (Arrowverse)
5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Yes! I haven’t in a bit due to being busy/exhausted but I always get to them! Reading and re-reading them can really turn a shitty day into a good one!
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I don’t really do angsty endings, but angsty middles. Think the closest might be By Any Other Name (the Flash) or Jealousy (Turning Saints Into the Sea) (MCU/Captain America).
They’re melancholic/angsty but end on a good note.
7. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Probably To Gaze at the Stars  (TOG). It has the most ‘we all lived happily ever after’ kinda ending.
8. Do you write crossovers? If so, what’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Do AUs count? I’ve written a tiny Harry Potter!AU of Star Trek and a huge Hartenstraat AU! of The Old Guard.
9. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yep. Most recently got shitty comments about a character whose trauma/mental illness was based on my own, and white people um ashkually-ing me about my own culture, giving me inaccurate ‘corrections’ and ‘advice’.
10. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I just started writing smutty scenes, very glossed-over and not really graphic though. Still too awkward/embarrassed about it tbh but maybe I’ll get bolder later
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I hope not!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I’ve had one translated into Russian!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Nope!
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
Spirk / Superbat
15. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I don't think I want to finish any WIPs I have up, but I’ve abandoned ideas I was going to write due to how the fandom turned me off the project.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I’ve been told it’s dialogue!
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Action/Set-up
18. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Eh, it depends on how much is used, and how it’s used. Most of the time it’s used wrong, translated wrong, used in a way no bilingual/multilingual person would, and just ranges from cringe to pointless. It’s better to just italicize and say that they’re speaking in another language, unless the person hearing said dialogue can’t speak it.
19. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Star Trek!
20. What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
Currently, my Top 5 are:
Letters From Across the Universe (Star Trek AOS)
In All But Name (Miraculous Ladybug)
What's In A Name? (Arrowverse)
To Gaze at the Stars (TOG)
In It To Win It (Voltron)
Tagging: @goldfishiescribbles  @ignisentis  @kikibluemay @zambomarti @pinkninjapj @godihatethisfreakingcat @kiaya @youneedasoultraveller and anyone else who wants to do this. ✨

fic writer questions!
i was tagged by @laissezferre—thank you so much!
1) how many works do you have on AO3? 15! i uh sure haven’t posted anything yet this year but i’m committed to changing that
2) what’s your total AO3 word count? 112,179
3) how many fandoms have you written for and what are they? only four at the moment—supernatural, star trek aos, the terror, and hannibal
4) what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
A Treatise on Touch (or Lack Thereof): a really silly little spirk crack fic i threw together for a valentine’s day exchange
Murphy’s Law of Cohabitation: yet another crack fic, but this one’s a destiel bed-sharing trope inversion written for the casdean flipfest
Like Salvation: short destiel s14 episode coda
The Art of Falling: destiel, au, written for the dcrb. also my longest fic!
oh my heart, how can i face you now?: slow and soft post-carnivale fitzier fic written for yuletide
5) do you respond to comments, why or why not? i do, although it can sometimes take me a while. i very much appreciate every comment i get and want to show that and engage with my readers, but as i am in all things, i am Slow
6) what’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? hmmm that’s a hard one! a lot of my fics have either bittersweet, melancholy, or just general Bad Endings. i write a decent amount of horror, although i’m not sure i’d call those endings angsty per se. maybe elegy (fitzier post-canon) or ad finitum (bridglar ep 9 missing scene)?
7) what’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending? a treatise on touch and murphy’s law (both linked above) are probably the winners of that race.
8) do you write crossovers? if so what is the craziest one you’ve written? i have not, although i’m not against doing so in the future!
9) have you ever received hate on a fic? i’ve received one or two indifferent or somewhat negative comments for various odd reasons but can gladly say i’ve not yet gotten hate.
10) do you write smut? if so what kind? i certainly have, although i’ve never done any pwp. i don’t think i’m particularly good at writing smut (lmao) and it’s always just been pretty run-of-the-mill stuff
11) have you ever had a fic stolen? not that i know of!
12) have you ever had a fic translated? yes, a treatise on touch was translated into chinese!
13) have you ever co-written a fic before? i have not!! i do roleplay on occasion, which is the closest i’ve come, but never with the intention of publishing anything.
14) what’s your all time favorite ship?  oh god i can’t answer that!! at the moment i’m invested in hannigram but i’m an equal-opportunity ship enjoyer
15) what’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? so many... i don’t really have any urge to go back to the spn fandom at this point in time although i did have a pretty cool birdbox au in the works as well as an almost-complete s9 (s8? i can’t keep them straight lmfao) au. i’m more hopeful for my terror wips!
16) what are your writing strengths? i like to think i'm a somewhat versatile writer, and i think i do decently with sentence variety and the occasional poetic snippet of writing
17) what are your writing weaknesses?  dialogueeeeee for sure! holds me up every time. i’m also not great at action-y writing or smut, planning, idea generation (beyond, like, oneshots), transitions, or longfic.
18) what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? i think it depends on the context, but in my opinion it should be used sparingly!
19) what was the first fandom you wrote for? supernatural! i was in a destiel discord server that had a drabble challenge i decided to try my hand at, and that was the first thing i ever published. i’d written a bit for other fandoms before that, but mostly roleplay, and never published any of it. actually, i did write the first chapter of what i intended to be this sweeney todd longfic when i was, like, sixteen, but that never saw the light of day, nor did my attempt at christine/erik when i was twelve or so (thank god)
20) what’s your favorite fic you’ve written? unfair question!! i have a love-hate relationship with everything i’ve ever written, although the majority of my cringing and embarrassment is reserved for my spn and star trek stuff. i haven’t read over most of these in a while so don’t quote me on this, but i do have a soft spot for oh my heart, how can i face you now?, and i’m also pretty proud of elegy (fitzier post-canon) and adrift (abigail hobbs/ofc post-s2 au). also do like paltry is the passion (hanngiram s2b oneshot)
tagging (no pressure!): @whalersandsailors @pooraurora @thestarvedghost @softthyla

I just watched ST: Generations. And this is what I have to say: well fuck this!
Tumblr media
But seriously, though. They did Kirk really bad, and not only in terms of Spirk or some gay agenda (that I definitely uphold), but in terms of Kirk's character development, plain and simple. He died alone, just as he feared in Final frontier, and may be it could have been turned into some cathartic emotional moment, but it never happened. I'm not surprised Shatner had to write his own books to revive Kirk, many would do the same.
Tumblr media
But for the rest I'd rather focus on the positive. :)
The fantastic holodeck ship scene: oh the costumes! And the sheer silliness of everything!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, the scene where the Enterprise was crashing. It was so obnoxiously long, a bit in a "so bad, that's good" way. I felt like I was in there myself, felt that longing for the ship just to stop moving already. Very satisfying in the end. The crashing scene is reminiscent of the shuttle craft scene in The Motion Picture, where Kirk just stares at the Enterprise for 5 straight minutes.
Tumblr media
And, of course, Data's emotions. I don't know, if it's because I just absolutely adore Spiner and am completely biased, but it was very cringe worthy and very adorable in all the right moments.
Tumblr media
Like, remember that moment when Data learns that Geordi is alive and immediately volunteers to take his place? Hits directly in the feels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, in conclusion: Generations was really weird, but Brent Spiner and chique uniforms saved the day. What else is new?

For the hc ask Jim Kirk, please!
1) sexuality headcanon: bi
2) otp: spirk 😌❤️
3) brotp: mcspirk as a magneton-style fusion becoming more powerful in each other’s presence but cancelling out what should be their combined brain power. that’s the best dynamic. kirk/uhura friendship stuff is great as well, I wish we saw more of it!
4) notp: whenever they tried to push kirk/rand in s1.....no thanks
5) first headcanon that pops into my head: hmm....yes....just as I suspected...according to my professional opinion jim kirk has adhd and anxiety and lets the crew borrow from his pack of glitter gel pens because this is a reasonable assessment and Not because I’m projecting :)
6) favourite line from this character: does the “bup bup bup bup!” sound effect from I, Mudd count as a line? whatever, it does now. and who could forget the classic “why mr spock, you almost make me believe in miracles” ✨
7) one way in which I relate to this character: I am not ashamed to say that we were both the quiet, super-serious-bookish-nerd people knew in school that took MANY years of coaxing to (mostly) loosen up
8) thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: jim kirk is a MENACE he’s RIDICULOUS. when he’s being dramatic and does that shoulder grabby thing or launches himself into battle like a bowling ball with no regard for the danger he’s in and I go sir calm down!!!! and when he’s looking at spock (probably explaining some science thing) with the concentrated power of a thousand supernovas (probably thinking this is a proposal) I want to pass out from the sheer embarrassment I feel for them both. it makes me want to shake him around if only for the chance to hear a single science-blue marble with a tiny bowl cut rattling around in that brain of his.
(my serious answer is once again All of plato’s stepchildren and his characterisation in the undiscovered country. what was up with that.)
9) cinnamon roll or problematic fave? he definitely has a few Questionable Moments....looking specifically at 60s brand cringe and certain acting choices....but I enjoy him a lot he’s very fun! I know in my heart he has always been a Good Nerd and the love he has for his crew and his ship and his Spock absolves him of the weird stuff <3

My problems with AOS
Well here I am, 10 years late with an opinion no one asked for, but I have to write this down and throw into the void so that I can be at peace. I’ve been salty about this film franchise for a very long time now. This will mostly focus on Star Trek (2009) with the other two movies sprinkled in.
1. Starfleet
Honestly where do I even begin? In TOS, Starfleet was modeled after the navy (idk how accurately, but Roddenberry was in the air force so I’m assuming he’d know how all that works). You can get a feel for the chain of command, and everything feels natural with character ages and things like that. There’s a procedure for everything.
AOS Starfleet feels more like a high school club than an interplanetary exploration organization. Jim is supposed to be twenty-five when he gets the rank of captain- after he was almost expelled for cheating. He has no idea how to operate or run a starship. TOS Kirk moved through the ranks of Starfleet and was promoted on merit and leadership skills- he worked for his position.
Why was Jim the only person who knew what was happening when Nero showed up? Was there any requirements to joining to Starfleet other than get on the shuttle? Why did the linguist not know the difference between Vulcan and Romulan when they’re the linguist? How did Pike bypass the chain of command to appoint Jim Kirk as First Officer which was an obvious show of favoritism to someone was about to be thrown out of the academy? Why the fuck was he allowed to keep the title of captain? What the fuck?
Speaking of Jim.
2. Jim Kirk’s Character
I...don’t like Jim’s character in this film. It’s not terrible for a younger version of Kirk, but like I said though, there’s no reason Kirk should be this young. And in this one he’s just kinda a douche.
We know from TOS that Kirk gets around, but he genuinely cares for his exes, and in general respects women. He uses sex appeal as a strategy, but more than anything this comes off as a subversion of the femme fatal trope bc Kirk is a man. In the movie, he’s just a standard action movie protag who has lots of sex just because.
The scene when the Orion woman says she loves him and he replied “that’s so weird” is just...so weird? Like I can’t imagine Kirk doing anything in that situation than backing off and explaining that he doesn’t feel the same way. The scene continues with him hiding under the bed when Uhura walks in. Watching how the camera angle makes Jim out to be a voyeur made me uncomfortable then and it still does. It could be explained that Jim is trying to figure out Uhura’s identity or that he’s listening in and people look at who they’re listening to but like...she was in her underwear. You shouldn’t look at people while they’re getting undressed, especially when they don’t even know you’re there? Is that a hot take? Apparently.
In TOS there’s this really nice scene in This Side of Paradise(S1E24) where the whole crew is high (again) and has abandoned ship, leaving Kirk to tend to things. We see Jim move around the ship with a little clip pad and make the proper checks. This is a captain who knows his stuff. That is the Kirk we should have seen if we’re going to see Jim become captain.
AOS kirk goes through a standard “stop being an asshole” arc commonplace for male protagonists, but this happens well past the point he should stop being an asshole. Either the AOS series should’ve been a prequel with Jim becoming captain at the end of the trilogy, or he should’ve been older with a completely different arc- maybe coming to terms with his rank? Imposter syndrome? Learning to trust his crew and building trust with them? Building a friendship with Spock and McCoy? There’s a lot to work with here.
3. Spock and Uhura’s relationship
Why. Like why. For what. Por Que.
I like giving Uhura a bigger role, I don’t like making her a love interest to do that.
It doesn’t make sense for either of their characters. Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, linguist expert who handles all transmissions to and from the enterprise- an icon of black women’s representation is now demoted to Spock’s nagging girlfriend. This bothers me more than a little bit.
It manages to make even less sense for Spock. A hallmark of Spock’s character is his duality. He struggles to combat his emotions and the human half of him. His repeating character arc in TOS is coming to terms with humanity while upholding the Vulcan way of life. Having him in an established romantic relationship before this arc is supposed to happen just makes for a boring romantic subplot about a relationship that shouldn’t happen and that I don’t care about.
TOS Vulcan culture is kinda shitty. Explicitly patriarchal and stuff, and also kinda racist against humans. The source of Spock’s inner conflict is not himself but a society that views him as lesser for being half human. However, one thing that I can certainly understand from a “logical” (logic in quotations bc racism and sexism is fucking stupid) people is ritualized arranged marriages. It just...makes sense to me that Vulcans would simply have their mates chosen for them and then marry that person and be done with it. Neat. Logical. Conformity.
This makes Spock and Uhura’s relationship even stranger. Why would Spock go so against conformity that he dates someone before he truly comes to terms with himself? Even if they throw out ponfarr and arranged marriage, it still doesn’t work but now it especially doesn’t work.
My personal theory is that Spock and Uhura’s relationship was established purely to make shippers shut up. It’s no secret Spirk is the most popular ship from TOS. I have no doubt they knew this while writing the movie. So to quietly wrap a no homo on Spock and Kirk’s friendship, they use Uhura as a prop to do so.
The teacher/student dynamic should only be relegated to fan fiction and the throwaway line about oral sensitivity makes me cringe. Every. Time.
4. McCoy
Karl Urbans performance is easily my favorite part of this movie. He captures DeForrest Kelley so well it hurts. He made Leonard Nimoy cry. His chemistry with Pine made McKirk go from the most underrated triumvirate ship in TOS to rival Spirks popularity in AOS. His scenes with Zachary Quinto are just *chefs kiss*.
So why doesn’t he have more of a role? The triumvirate is missing a third.
In particular, there’s a scene where Uhura, Kirk, and Spock make their way down to a planet to talk to a Klingon. I can’t remember which movie it was or why, but Spock and Uhura were bickering and Kirk remarks “can we do this later?”
The line was funny. It would’ve been golden if it was McCoy and not Uhura.
A fantastic performance by an underutilized character in a movie where that character should’ve been at the forefront.
5. Representation
I am skeptical of any movie that advertises diversity. Nonetheless, it made me happy to know Sulu was going to be gay. This is Star Trek after all, known for its diversity and large LGBT fan base, and an homage to George Takai who’s a gay man irl. So whatever.
The fact that I wasn’t expecting much says a lot about the current state of LGBT rep in media but this blink-and-you-miss-it shit is really starting to get to me.
I mean he jus- he doesn’t even give his husband a KISS. Like why.
6. Destroying Vulcan
WHY. Oh god why.
This isn’t Star Wars, JJ. We don’t do that here.
Imploding Vulcan was the most god awful shock value bullshit plot device I’ve ever seen in a movie and it was done entirely to make Spock sad. Besides the gaping plot hole of “why did Nero go back in time to destroy Vulcan when he could’ve just saved Romulus” I’m just grasping to find a purpose for this particular event. New fans don’t care at all about Vulcan while I was enraged that they would do Amanda that dirty.
It’s not just that they did that, it’s more that they did it like that. Vulcan’s destruction should’ve caused a federation wide meltdown as the biggest catastrophe in the entire franchise. If they were gonna make the stakes so pointlessly high, they should’ve treated the destruction of Vulcan exactly how they would treat the destruction of earth. There a million ways to treat that event with more gravity and million better plot lines that don’t involve G E N O C I D E
7. Miscellaneous petty bullshit because I’m a baby
-lower the fucking stakes Jesus Christ
-Don’t like the set. It’s bright and white and boring and gives me a headache. You don’t need a remake of the old set but like have fun ya know? Shit looks like an Apple store.
-Christine and I are the same in that we are both soft and are thirsty for Spock. Imagine my surprise to learn she wasn’t fucking there. Same with Janice but I’m more pressed about Christine. I don’t even remember the name of that blonde doctor lady who is Not Christine but i didn’t want her.
-The costumes in AOS look boring but still don’t feel like a uniform either. I deadass think Chris Pines outfit in the SNL skit looked better than the actual movie (minor adjustments needed)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-I didn’t notice this at first but someone pointed out that women’s uniforms don’t signify rank and now I can’t not see it. I don’t...think this movie treats women good? Or McCoy? Or just people who deserve better?
-Lens Flare
-I get why they did it but I don’t like that they misquoted the opening theme to say “no one” instead of “no man”. I probably wouldn’t have even notice except they gave the line to Uhura. Comes off as just a touch too “yay feminism” which is really rich coming from that treated Uhura like an object to be looked at when she wasn’t too busy being Spock’s emotional support gf, and completely cut two women from the main cast.
8. Conclusions
If I could describe these movies in one word it’d be generic. Which sucks because Star Trek far from generic.
They’re fun to watch but not think about. It was nice that I got to see a Star Trek movie in theaters. I just wish it as the same Trek I saw on TV.

I started writing this before I’d seen that people were tagging Walter x Lance as Walance, but didn’t want to change my idea so I just went with it anyway. Also, I didn’t mean for this to be over 1.8k, woops. So most of it is under the cut.
Operation: Launch the Ship
Walter’s stomach grumbles hungrily as he approaches the break room. He’s thankful it is already noon, because he is super hungry after working all morning on his latest project. He’s about to walk into the break room, when he hears his name spoken from inside. It catches his attention and he stops walking, standing just outside the open doorway. He knows he shouldn’t eavesdrop, but no one should be foolish enough to gossip in a shared office space if their conversation was not meant to be overheard. So, he listens in.
He can barely hear Eyes and Ears arguing over the whir of the microwave.
“It should be Walster! It makes more sense because Lance usually goes by Sterling.” Ears argues.
“But you can’t just combine first and last names! That’s like against the rules!” Eyes says defiantly.
“There are no rules!”
“Well, there should be! Then you’d see, it should be Wance. It concisely combines their two first names. It’s perfect.”
“That’s terrible! It sounds like a child talking. I say it should be Walster.”
“Come on, you know Wance is a better ship name. You’re just too stubborn to admit it!”
Walter cringes. Neither Walster or Wance are ideal. And, he realizes with a sigh, if they’re talking ship names for him and Lance, they’ve probably been gossiping about their relationship, too.
Walter and Lance have been dating for three months. While they haven’t kept it a secret, they have tried to keep their personal lives as separate from their work at the agency as possible. They’re professionals and don’t want their relationship to interfere with the important work they’ve been doing in their newly founded branch of the agency.
Walter waits for a break in Eyes and Ears’ conversation before wandering into the break room nonchalantly, as if he hadn’t just overheard their heated discussion. He grabs his lunch bag from the fridge and decides it’d be better to eat at his desk, where he can wallow about the lamentable options available for his ship names in private.
After Walter rushes through his lunch, he tries to focus on his work to take his mind off the office gossip. He is currently developing a Version 2.0 of his multi-pen. His first multi-pen tool has been a hit with field agents, as it is so easy to hide the gadget in plain sight. The new model will come with advanced safety features and four new functions. It’s nearly finished, with just a few more adjustments needed to the Bubble Blaster setting before he sends it to the prototype lab for testing.
But even his excitement over the improved multi-pen isn’t enough of a distraction from the terrible ship names that Ears and Eyes had debated. By the end of the day, he feels a heavy grey cloud of disappointment hanging over him that even a dose of Kitty Glitter can’t cut through. Hoping that a low key night in with Lance will improve his mood, he rushes to pack his pens and notebooks into his bag before heading home.
Coming home does not improve his mood. He still is in a strop about the ship names as he empties the dishwasher and prepares dinner. He’s unusually quiet as they eat.
“Is everything alright, Walt?” Lance
“Yeah. Just some stuff at work bothering me.” Walter brushes off his concern. It’s just a silly nickname, why does he even care? Lance probably wouldn’t care.
“Alright. But, you know, I’m here if you want to talk. Or if you need me to blow someone up.” Walter flinches and Lance quickly tacks on, “With non-violent glitter bombs, of course.”
Luckily, Lance seems to drop the subject, turning the conversation to the flight training he did with Lovey and Marcy. Lance describes how Marcy ended up in the trash can while practicing a loop-di-loop maneuver and it has Walter in stitches, bad mood nearly forgotten.
After dinner, they settle in, such a quiet night together watching tv and talking about their days. He curls into Lance’s side, resting his head on Lance’s broad shoulder and is ready to forget about all the stresses from his workday. Until Lance finds a rerun of a Star Trek episode, which brings back all the same worries about the state of their ship name. As the episode plays on, his disdain for the proposed ship names his coworkers had created returns. He sighs deeply as Kirk and Spock interact. Spirk is a great ship name, short and catchy and not infantile. Not like Wance or Walster.
“Okay, what’s up.” Lance turns, jostling Walter from his position, forcing Walter to sit up and look at him.
“Nothing.” He deflects.
“Don’t “nothing” me. You’ve been weird since I got home. Did I do something?”
“No, of course not. You didn’t do anything. I just overheard something at the office. It’s fine.”
“It’s not fine if it upsets you. Who do I need to fight?” He puffs his chest up protectively.
“No one, calm down.” Walter pats his chest, then smooths a crease in his shirt down as he adds, “It’s not even a big deal.”
“If it’s not a big deal, then you can tell me.” Lance pesters.
“It’s just that I overheard Eyes and Ears talking about our ship name. I don’t know why I’m upset. It’s so embarrassing.” Walter covers his face with his hands.
“Ship name? Are you building a ship in the lab?” Lance gets overly excited.
“No not a ship- ship. Like a relationship.”
Lance looks so confused, like he’d never heard that term before. “Oh, you’ve never heard of shipping!” Walter laughs at the realization. His boyfriend’s ineptitude for understanding pop culture is enough humor to raise his spirits a bit. Of all the things his smart, strong spy boyfriend can do, from catching the bad guy to turning into a literal bird, he’s still completely clueless when it comes to pop culture.
“Why are you laughing?” Lance pouts. He never likes to be the butt of jokes that he doesn’t understand.
Walter just laughs harder. It reminds him of the night he had to explain to Lance how memes worked. But eventually, he catches his breath and explains, “Shipping is when someone thinks two or more people should be in a relationship.”
Lance’s brows furrow. “We /are/ in a relationship.”
“Let me finish. A ship name is usually a combination of the people’s names, like a shorthand way to reference them. Like Star Trek,” Walter points at the television. “Lots of people think Spock and Kirk are in a relationship, so they call them Spirk.”
“Spirk,” Lance repeats skeptically.
“Yeah. So, like, I overheard Eyes and Ears arguing about it today and I realized that we don’t have a good ship name.”
Lance has a blank look on his face, like something isn’t quite making sense. Walter knew he wouldn’t understand why it upset Walter. “Never mind. I told you it was silly.”
“No, no. It’s not silly if it’s important to you. I’m just trying to figure it out. So, it’s like a code name?”
“Kinda?”
“Well, what’d they come up with? It can’t be that bad.”
“Walster and Wance.”
Lance grimaces. “Oh, those are bad.”
“Yep.”
“Why don’t you just make up one that you like?” Lance asks.
“I can’t just make up our own ship name!” Walter throws up his hands in frustration. “There’s like rules against that! It’s a name bestowed upon the couple.”
“Oh.” Lance falls silent. The characters on the tv screen fill the silence between them. Walter doesn’t know what’s happening on screen and doesn’t even attempt to focus on the episode, mind still stuck on his own personal travesty. If only he could hint at it, or get someone else to use a better ship name.
That’s it! Walter sits upright, eyes widening as the perfect solution comes to mind. “We could do it!”
“Do what?” Lance asks.
“Create our own ship name.”
“But you just said you couldn’t.”
“But, what if they didn’t know we’d picked our own? We are spies, we should be able to infiltrate the gossip network at the office and implant a better ship name without anyone finding out.”
Lance is still skeptical, his eyebrows raising as he tries to catch up to Walter’s thoughts.
“Come on, it’s a win-win. We can pick a name we like, and no one will know it was you that did it.”
“Do you even have a name picked out?”
“Well, I was thinking Beckling. You know, like Beckett and Sterling. It’s short and catchy. And cute!”
Lance rolls his eyes subtly. He can’t say that he loves that choice, but he is endeared by his boyfriend’s enthusiasm. And though he may not understand ships, he can tell this nickname means something to Walter. After weighing a few pros and cons, he comes to a decision.
“I guess.” Lance reluctantly acquiesces.
“Alright!” Walter pumps his fist in the air excitedly. “Operation: Launch the Ship is on! But, we’ll have to work fast before one of those awful names sticks.”
Walter quickly withdraws a notebook and an ink multi-pen from his work bag, eager to plan a fun mini-mission with Lance. It’ll be sorta like when they first met, just the two of them working together. “Let’s begin!” He clicks on the purple ink button with gusto!
The purple button, however, does not activate his favorite purple ballpoint. Instead it launches a stream of bubbles from the tip of the multi-pen. Walter watches in horror as the activated Bubble Blaster quickly fills the living room with a sea of foam. He must have accidentally brought home the unfinished multi-pen 2.0 instead of his favorite multi-pen. Unfortunately, as he was still tinkering with the design, there was no way to shut off the Bubble Blaster until the multi-pen ran out of ammo.
Finally, the multi-pen finally fizzles out and the last sudsy drops spill out of the end. Walter’s cheeks flame red, embarrassed to have accidentally brought another of his unfinished inventions into Lance’s house. It’d been two weeks since the last incident, and Walter had promised to be more careful. He is afraid of how Lance will react to this latest mishap.
“Walter… are the bubbles part of the operation?” Lance asks, tone unreadable.
“No…” Walter turns back to Lance, hoping that he isn’t too angry. Instead of anger, he is surprised to find the most adoring look on Lance’s face. “But they could be, if I can fix the multi-pen 2.0 in time.”
“I hope so. I think the bubbles could come in handy.” Lance says. Then he leans in and wipes a bit of foam from Walter’s cheek with his thumb.
There’s never a dull moment with Beckling. And they wouldn’t have it any other way.

Stat Trek Episodes 64-66
Plato’s Stepchildren: And just when I thought that we made it past the stupid. This was utter cringe. The idea isn’t bad, powerful God-like beings wanting to keep McCoy due to his medical skill and screwing with the crew loke play things. Maybe it’s just my beed for McCoy being seen as important talking, but that could have worked. But the way they do it is just... goofy, and not in a fun way. The episode is also famous for the kiss between Kirk (a white man) and Uhura (a black woman) which at the time was a big deal since interracial relationships were very much still controversial back then. I can give the episode points for bwing brave enough to do do that... but as the characters were FORCES to do so non-consentually, it feels incomfortable than progressive unfortunately. Again, 60’s. But the episode was just cringe. Heck it made me look back at The Squire of Gothos, an episode I ranked very low, and have a bit of a better opinion on that one. Not a bad plot idea in theory, but the execution ruins it. 1/5.
Wink of an Eye: Very much an improvement over the last one and overall perfectly fine. Man poor Kirk, gets put into an accelerated state where everything is frozen around him aside from the aliens involved and the leader is trying to force herself on him. The man just cannot catch a break. I really like how during the scenes where the crew is frozen, the shots are in an angle. It creates an unsettling effect, like something feels just off-balance. It helps make things feel unsettling. There’s nothing too nktable about the episode, we’ve had these ‘alien forces take the Enterprise/interest in one of the crew’ stories, but the execution is perfectly fine. Especially love how Kirk acted like he was submitting finally... and promptly steal Deela’s weapon right off of her, haha! Nothing grand, but perfectly serviceable. And again, it’s an improvement of the last one. 3/5.
The Empath: So I had actually watched this ahead of time weeks ago. I’m a sucker for Triumvirate feelings, what can I say? I had enjoyed it the first time around, and I did so again here. Asmittedly there are some plot holes, like was tormenting the trio for Gem to heal REALLY the only way the Vians could solve the problem? I also found out that this was a fan-submitted episode which is really cool and makes sense since it DOES feel like a hurt/comfort fic. A good one though. Of course the best part is our main trio and especially after the Vians tell Kirk that he has to pixk between Spock and McCoy as to who gets tortured. McCoy makes the decision for him, hypoing him and then doing the same to Spock when he intends to hand himself over. This was when McCoy became my favorite character because he willingly sacrificed himself to protect his best friends knowing that he’ll die painfully by doing so, and even took the moment to tell Gem that the two will take care of her. Which in turn taught Gem the power of self-sacrifice for others and the powerful feelings behind it. And even then, McCoy refuses to let her because if she does, she’ll die and he will NOT let others be harmed especially for his behalf. God I love him. Then what happens when they find him again... yeah that image of Kelley’s dead stare while hanging in chains still freaks me out. Then he lays there dying with even Spock concerned and trying to make him as comfortable as possible. It really shows the bond that the three have and why I love their dynamic so much. The actress for Gem was also freakin’ fantastic, conveying so much emotion through expression and body languge without saying one word. Freakin’ excellent acting. It’s not a perfect episode, not even the best written objectively. But I love it for demonstrating those character relations and some good character moments, McCoy especially. Oh and it has bucket loads of shipping material for Spirk, Spones, McKirk, and McSpirk so everyone wins! 4/5.
Was hoping to get five episodes done, but I failed. So here’s the current plan. There are around 12 episodes remaining. I am going to do three a day (barring any weather issues), then next week we plow through the movies. I did Motion Picture a while ago, so counting the reboot films that’s eight in all. HonestlyS3 has... not been the best ride. There are a few good episodes, but... let’s just say that it’s gonna be easier to pick the least favorite episodes over the favorites. It’s not horrible, but I can definitely see why the show got cancelled after this. And as I’ve reqd the summaries, I know there’s more stupid to come. But hopefully we geta couple of gems (as a Spones shipper I’m greatly looking forward to All Our Yesterday XD). We’re gonna do three episodes a day, then S3 episodes list post, then overall series post, and then we dive into the films. May overlap into early March, but ah well. Just means getting to watch these characters a little more.
