In some of the earlier drafts of Memnoch the Devil, David Talbot was supposed to die, NOT Armand:
From what I saw, a lot of Anne's drafts and notes at Tulane for MtD where more heavily focused on developing the whole religious aspect and the lore that she wanted to follow, but this really caught my attention in a big way for obvious reasons. In an another world, David would've self-immolated instead of Armand, and the book would've ended with Armand and Lestat walking together in Central Park!
"Almost Claudia, but not"... Ouch.
I will say that I understand why ultimately Anne decided to go the route that she did with Armand in actual canon (aka what's literally on the page)—I think it does make sense for his arc given his background and religious trauma. I understand it, but also as a reader and an Armand girlie, I would have been much more satisfied by this ending 🥲 (no surprise there!). Alas, I am not Anne Rice, and I'm just so grateful that she thought ahead to make her notes, drafts, and diaries accessible to us after her passing so we can have fun trying to understand her creative process and considering all the possibilities!
Lastly:
"I do think David has go to to go. Maybe he should go instead of Armand." just takes me right out.
ANNE.

anne rice, pseudointellectual extraordinaire, managed to squeeze into the tale of the body thief references to: "sailing to byzantium" and "the dolls" by william butler yeats, a tale of two cities, anna karenina, the postman always rings twice, lolita, "the tyger" by william blake, a tree grows in brooklyn, "the thing on the doorstep" by h.p. lovecraft, "eyes of the mummy" by robert bloch, goethe's faust, jeffrey burton russell, mircea eliade, john milton, marcus aurelius, hart crane, george bernard shaw, diogenes, thomas aquinas, jacques maritain, pierre teilhard de chardin, dostoyevsky, albert camus, and john keats. at one point lestat uses the alias "sebastian melmoth," which was a pseudonym used by oscar wilde, itself a reference to melmoth the wanderer by charles maturin. later lestat goes by the last name "wilde." he also references othello and at one point asserts that he is "not time's fool." the alias "sheridan blackwood" might be a reference to sheridan dufferin given rice's interest in art, and i assume she got "alexander stoker" from bram. the movies that appear or are referenced are suspicion (1941), vice versa (1988), all of me (1984), the company of wolves (1984), beauty and the beast (1946), the dead (1987), it's a wonderful life (1946), and body and soul (1947). characters see or reference art by rembrandt (specifically the syndics of the draper's guild), picasso (three separate times), willem de kooning, jasper johns, andy warhol, monet, and edward hopper. there's also a reference to the actor rutger hauer. uhhh i think that's it but holler if you caught one i didn't

Why is she so cold? Randall half-wondered to himself, as he listened to her with a tender smile: He couldn't help but notice this as he held her hand, wishing for nothing more than to warm her with everything he had. He hated to think this poor woman was cold, even in the summer, and so he found himself taking her hands the way a lover might, hoping he could chase away the chill.
"I...I'm glad you came in last night," he smiled, giving her hand a little squeeze. "I...I know how you feel, in a way; my life, it's...been pretty lonely too lately, it's been very, uh...monotonous, I guess is the word. I get up, I go to work, I go to bed...rinse and repeat. And so for you to come along and just...shake up my whole world, it feels like? It's wonderful."
He didn't know what compelled her to come into the shop last night. He didn't know what drew her in put them on one another's path, nor did he knew what about himself it was that so attracted her, but he wasn't about to question it, as he finished shyly, and yet completely earnestly, "I'm...I'm very excited for tomorrow night too-there's no one I'd rather spend an evening out with than you."

But one very dark and sad thing, if you choose to consider the Buffy and Angel books canon is this:
In the novels, while Giles never meets Fred, Buffy, Xander, Tara, and Dawn do. And they all like her. Tara and Fred in particular really hit it off. As, of course, do Fred and Willow, who meet in Angel the Series (they actually meet before that in the books, which actually maybe explains some things, perhaps: like why Fred thinks to call Willow when Angel loses his soul).
And Giles still refuses to help her when Illyria is possessing her during that plot in "Angel"--because he no longer trusts Angel Investigations since they're working for Wolfram & Hart. And, to be honest, for revenge on Angel--and Fred dies. And Fred, of course, was an innocent. And the sweetest girl you'd ever meet.

Part 4
Some house wardens/dorm leaders (Malleus not included*)
*by not included, I mean I'm saving him for later
Yes. VERY YES.
You offered, man. Now ya gotta commit to the bit
I even got the ghost camera ready to immortalize this once in a lifetime moment
Bold of you to assume I'll be lucky enough to reach the end
Actually, yes it does. Your sarcasm wasn't obvious enough for me to pick up the telltale signs.
I thought we were doing a dark humor bit.
We are not showing this guy any mercy, are we? lol
Come along, Idia! I need your introvert support buff and heals to boost my introverted social battery! Plus, I get bragging rights that the Idia Shroud was physically present to my party as a bonus with a happy Ortho as a double bonus!
Win-win for me and Ortho!
(I mean, poor dude gave his best attempt at saying happy birthday last year and now we're forcing him to attend a party? Next year, is he just going to resign to his fate of attending our parties? And it just keeps going until he willingly comes to our party on his own because we'll be there hanging out with him? Probably not lol but like, imagine birthday line mini plots. That'd be cool)
Love you, Kalim, but please don't, for my wellbeing. I'm an introvert and that will put me out of commission for a few days, even my insomnia wouldn't be able to keep me awake
Head pats for the enthusiasm though
My first thought was skin care/facial care, but that might be too obvious. I hope it's something cute.
Is it a massage? Trip to the spa? Therapy? A raise from Crowley? Everyone overcoming whatever issues they may have? I don't know, man. What I need most right now is to sleep, so please spell it out for me
Dang it! My first guess was right! I shouldn't have second guessed myself!
Too bad I can never keep up with a skincare routine because they usually have more steps than I can handle
Extra Riddle because I couldn't fit it in the last part:
Not the smile I was talking about, but this smile is still worthy of head pats
So happy head pats for Riddle!

eden had a very important conversation with heidi about the possibility of being turned when she’s older.
transcript below.
eden: heidi, you know how your mum and i are... different?
heidi: uhm...
eden: how we sleep during the day, and don’t eat dinner with you?
heidi: oh! because you’re vampires?
eden: ...yeah. that doesn’t scare you, does it?
heidi: nope! it makes you two special.
eden: *laughs* you’re a good kid.
eden: but you know when you’re old enough, you can be like us too.
heidi: i can?
eden: but only if you want to! it’s a big decision.
eden: make sure you really think about it, and you can tell us when you’re older.
heidi: *giggles* okay!

vampires dream and wilbur have been companions since the late 1700s when they met in london.
both of them having been alone for over 50 years, they decide to stick together when they cross paths and get along well.
the two of them experience a lot together: the springtime of nations, the construction of the eiffel tower, the 1920s in la, the beginnings of queer pride.
now, in 2023, they live an almost mundane life in a nice, spacious new york apartment, with a friend at the blood bank and fun, enjoyable jobs at a music store and a flower shop respectively.
in the almost 250 years they've been together, they've never had a problem with hunters.
of course, that luck runs out one day.
it happens while dream is out getting dinner after work; a tasty bag of b positive from schlatt and a giant box of fried rice from the chinese restaurant down the road.
when he comes back, their apartment door is unlocked and ajar.
dream enters the space slowly and cautiously, breath hitching when he sees the completely destroyed hallway, their photos torn from the walls and shattered, petals of the flowers he brought home yesterday scattered everywhere.
but the thing that scares him the most is that wilbur's shoes are still by the door despite there being no sign of him anywhere.
dream's worst fears are confirmed when he steps into the living room.
there's a picture of wilbur projected onto their tv, him lying on their blood-soaked carpet, looking barely conscious, hands tied behind his back and duct tape over his mouth.
dream's so distracted by the sight that he doesn't hear the person coming up behind him.
the last thing he feels is a needle piercing the skin of his neck.
-
what wakes him up is a broken, pained scream. he shoots up, just to find his wrists and ankles strapped to a bed.
the room he's in looks partly like a lab and partly like a torture chamber, test tubes and chemicals lining the wall to his left while the right houses multiple knives, guns, arrows, and wooden stakes.
his assessment is interrupted by the door opening, a man and a woman dressed in black stepping into the room. another gut-wrenching scream and a loud sob echo behind them, and it's only now that dream fully registers wilbur's voice.
suddenly, there's white-hot fury running through his veins.
he struggles against his binds, a low, angry growl escaping him when he can't get out.
the two hunters step closer, arrogant smirks on their faces when a third cry reaches the room.
it's what finally makes dream snap, the rage overflowing. the sound of the leather cuffs ripping wipes the grins off the hunters' faces. they both run for the door, but it doesn't even take dream ten seconds to tear their throats out.
wiping the blood from his chin, he steps out into the hallway.
they're going to regret taking him.
but they're especially going to regret ever laying a hand on wilbur.
his best friend. his partner.
the man he loves.
