Hi, heads-up that this will be a non-BTS post.

I’d like to respond to an anon who sent me a message but wanted to be careful about trigger and content warnings. It’s a bit delayed of a response, but I wanted to take some time to think about my response first. Feel free to read after the jump if you’d like.

Thanks for sharing, anon. For those who might be unfamiliar, a leaked draft of the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn key legislation (Roe vs. Wade) that protected a person’s right to get an abortion.

What does this mean? Abortion rights would be decided at the state level, with variance across states on whether or not people are able to seek out a safe, legal procedure. 

Outlawing abortion doesn’t mean ending them altogether. Abortion has and always will continue to exist. It behooves societies to offer legal abortions for their citizens. It not only guarantees the health of people who seek out the procedure, but it also leads to a higher quality of life for them, too.

I'm hoping that with the decision sitting at the state level comes, at the very least, access to free, cost-effective, and comprehensive birth control, as well as no punishment for people who seek the procedure elsewhere [1, 2]. While that’s harder to envision, I’m also hoping that we can work together to ensure that our governments are fully and accurately representative of our populations, and that policies reflect those populations more equitably. 

It's been a pretty intense time for US politics, and, anon, I share your concerns and frustration. I happen to support the right to choose, though I completely respect that others may have a different opinion. When it comes to these kinds of shifts in the political atmosphere, I've often thought of leaving the South. However, I've also weighed the thought that if I leave, that's one less vote on behalf of these beliefs.  

For those of you feeling frustrated and outraged by these developments, I wanna send some heartfelt feeling out to you to let you know that many people feel the same way, and I’m one of them. I can’t speak for anyone else, and I don’t know what else to do except to go vote.

Take care of yourselves. Know that you’re not alone. Right here with you, anon.
