it’s always the people who love sokka saying that katara was wrong for saying that sokka didn’t love their mother the way she did, when conveniently forgetting how sexist sokka was to katara for their entire childhood considering what the first 4 eps imply

Yuetara, zukka, and maiko
yuetara
ship
1) its not one of my main ships. i dont rlly read fanfic for them but if i see a cute fanart of them ill enjoy it and i think i first started shipping it because of good fanarts for them.
2) i like yuetara because of how similar they are. theyre both women from the water tribe. they both understand the misogyny that they have faced. and they both said f sexism im gonna be a strong woman. i also love the tui and la parallel. moon spirit and ocean spirit parallel COME ON. YUE IS THE MOON. KATARA IS THE MOST POWERFUL WATERBENDER. THEY ARE THE OCEAN AND THE MOON. the push and pull they could give eachother. that dynamic ftw.
3) i guess if i didnt like something about this ship would be the fact that if i read a fic or see a fanart w yuetara then than means in that particular au i wont get any yuekka and yuekka is probably my second favorite ship. but then again if i get yuetara than i could get a plethora of other sokka ships to go with it so my sadness disappears in like two seconds. gosh shipping is hard sometimes until you remember ‘hey i have like fifty different universes in my head. all ur ships can coexist in ur brain olivia’ other than that i really see no downsides to this ship. maybe i wish it had more content. maybe if it had more content id ship it a lot more but its not one of the more popular ships so the content is kinda few n far between on my feed.
zukka:
SHIPPP
1) my boys. my babies. my loves. i watched this show for the first time when it came out on netflix and when it ended i really didnt ship anything other than kataang. i came onto tumblr to find fun atla content and one of the very first things i saw under the atla tag was zukka content. i was like oh? whats this? zukka? interesting... i was intrigued so i found a list of fic recs and i fell in love with the ship. the rest is history. its probably my number one ship because it was my very first ship here and im nostalgic
2) oh boy there is so much i like about this ship. i relate to a shit ton of characters in atla. but sokka and zuko may be the ones i relate to most. i relate to sokka because i tend to feel second best a lot to my friends. i try to stay positive but things rarely go the way i plan or hope for them too and while im happy for my friends and their achievements i oftentimes find myself thinking why cant that be me? and i see this a lot in sokka especially in sokkas master. i dont feel special a lot and idk seeing sokka feel the same way and then realizing he is special kinda helped me realize that im special too. on the flipside i relate to zuko because i have wild anger issues and difficulty dealing w my emotions a lot as well. i get broody and short tempered and insecure very often and i tend to push people away and i refuse to ask for help (the amount of teachers and adults and therapists who have told me its okay to ask for help ur not any weaker because of it is astounding. do i listen to them? .....im working on it.) and i saw a shit ton of this in zuko. book one and two zuko rarely asks for help as seen in the blue spirit and zuko alone and he pushes away uncle so many times and even when the gaang iffers to help him in i think its the chase he tells them to leave. when he finally has his redemption and joins the gaang and lets them kinda become a better person i was so happy. i want that for myself yk. seeing him finally win the agni kai and overcome his family that always told him he was nothing was such a win. my sister and i get along but when we were children we were very much like zuko and azula. it was extremely competitive all the time and there was so much toxicity and sibling drama to a concerning extent. we get along great now which im very happy about but yeah their sibling relationship hit a lil too on the nose for me. seeing as i relate to these character so much and want them ti be happy i want to live vicariously through them so seeing them together is amazing for me to project into them. i love projecting onto fictional characters and with them i can project onto BOTH so its a winwin. plus so many zukka fics are so well written and heartwarming and heartbreaking and emotional and fluffy anf UGH the talent here us astounding.
3) what do i not like about the ship? again the list is long. oops. mainly the toxic shippers. there are so many toxic zukka stans that sometimes make it hard for me to enjoy this ship but hey! thats what the block button is for:) i despise how often people infantilize zuko and completely ruin his character for the sake of making him a soft weak lil boy who needs protecting. thats just not zuko for me. and ive seen many many accounts even state that this kind of portrayal of zuko is rooted in racist stereotypes about asian men (now i am white so i personally have never experiences racism but i feel the need to bring that up because it is wrong and attention needs to be brought to it because a lot of poc fans have criticised this) and the same for sokka. some ppl rlly skew his character and make him a big strong brute and hypermasculine and once again poc fans have said that this take is rooted in racist stereotypes. again! these are just my opinions! this is my favorite ship! but i think its important to acknowledge some of the bad parts of our ships as well and be critical where criticism is needed :))
maiko
ship
1) I LOVE MAIKO. “i dont hate you” “i dont hate you too” BRUH. my little heart just burst into flames. im sorry guys but maiko is so cute. they hate everything except eachother. BRUH that is one of the cutest tropes. i shipped them the moment i saw them together onscreen and i was so happy when zukos face lit up in the finale when mai came back.
2) “i hate everything but i have a soft spot for you” TAKE MY MONEY I AM A SUCKER FOR THIS. they are so cute together. like zuko is rarely happy in a majority of atla but mai makes him happy and i- 🥺🥺 HE DESERVES IT. and mai is always so supportive of him. when hes stressing out about the war meeting she tries her best to comfort him. and zuko cares about her too. he may not be the best at showing it but oh my god hes TRYING HIS BEST. i think its a very accurate portrayal of teenage relationships because they arent perfect and they do fight but like,, every teenage relationship does that. and even after everything and how he left her in the fire nation she still had his back at boiling rock. she still risked her life against azula to save his butt.
3) the thing i hate about maiko isnt even about maiko. its about antis who think mai is toxic and that zuko deserves better. that has got to be the worst take ive ever heard. they had a fight in ember island. that is NORMAL. they are teenagers. they are not perfect. but underneath all the rough edges and things they need to work out they still care about eachother so freaking much. i genuinelt believe that neither of them would do anything to intentionally hurt the other and i think thats what matters the most. if anything mai is the best girlfriend in the entire world because zuko fucked up like,, quite a few times. he got rlly jealous and dumped her thru a letter and ppl always say that mai was toxic for being mad at him for those two things. umm she had every right to be mad at him for both of those. and while zuko is allowed to feel his emotions and be angry sometimes as well sometimes he needs to think things thru and realize that hey maybe some if this jealousy is unfounded. BUT EVEN THEN. HE RESPECTED HER FEELINGS AND DIDNT TOUCH HER WHEN SHE SAID DONT TOUCH ME. HE RESPECTED HER. so i hate toxic maiko takes because they are literally so wrong in my opinion.
again all of these are just my opinions!! feel free to agree or disagree but please be respectful!! i will respect whatever u think as well because this is all just for fun :)

No one is Better
SUMMARY: Soulmate Au. Where the place your soulmate first touches is the colour of the nation they are from. (Red:fire, Blue:water, Green: earth, Yellow:air)
PAIRING: Sokka x reader WARNING: None
Part three of Someone better, It’s for the best
Tumblr media
STORY:
Sokka arrived at the gang's apartment and his head was reeling.
“Sokka,you okay bud,” Aang asked.
“They are here. (Y/N) is here” Sokka kept repeating under his breath.
“Wow really what a coincidence” Aang said, with an abnormal amount of enthusiasm.
“They said leaving me was for the best” he could feel the sobs now in his throat.
Aang looked at him confused and Katara raised her brow, “What are you even talking about?” she asked.
“Wait who is (Y/N)?” Toph said.
“They saved Sokka on a fire nation ship the first day we all met” Aang said.
“Don’t leave out the part where she was a guard on Zuko’s ship and a firebender,” Katara said, rolling her eyes.
Sokka found his hands tracing the mark on his forearm. The red looked brighter than he remembered.
“Ohh is that who you saw in town and ran away from,” Toph jokes.
Sokka let out a weak laugh, “Yeah,”
“Wait, I'm confused” Aang said.
Sokka traced his fingers over the mark again. Aang looked down and saw the bright red marks. A sudden realization hit him. They were Sokka’s soulmate.
“Oh,” was all he managed to get out. He looked at the face of the rest of the group. Both Katara and Toph looked confused. Sokka looked at Aang and saw the realization in his eyes.
“They are your…” Aang couldn't find the right words but Sokka nodded, “They are”
“They are your what?” Toph said.
“Soulmate, (Y/N) is my soulmate,” Sokka said, rubbing the mark.
“Oh, how could i have been so stupid” Katara muttered.
“What are you on about?” Sokka said.
“I think I may know why (Y/N) left,” Katara said feeling an overwhelming amount of guilt, “that day at camp we were talking about soulmate and I may have brought up Sokka hating his”
“You did what?” Sokka said, shocked.
“We were on the topic of her soulmate being in the water tribe and I guess I just didn't realize, I’m sorry”
“It’s okay.” Sokka huffed, “I just need to find a way to get her to realize that we should be together”
The plan they all came up with was for Sokka to spend as much time around you and wear you down. Now you spent most of the days baking and watching Sokka eat whatever he bought and getting annoyed at his attempts to flirt with you. On the fifth day of him doing this you decided to talk to him.
“Why are you here?” You asked.
“I like the pastries?” Sokka said, you rolled your eyes, “So I found out why you left,”
“Yeah I told you it was for the best,” you scoffed.
“No I meant I know what Katara told you,” He said, looking into your eyes, “I know she told you I hated my mark but I just wanted to say that I don't anymore,” Your eyebrows raised as you wiped down a table.
“I’m glad you dont hate it,” Sokka looked so hopeful but you couldn't, “I still think that us being apart is for the best”
“Why?” he asked.
“I…,” you stammered, “I was on the wrong side for so long. You wouldn't believe the things they tell you in the fire nation. I’m just not good enough for you.” You inhaled a deep breath looking at him.
“You should find someone else, someone better than me, better for you” you said. You avoided eye contact with him.
“There is no one better than you” those words fell from his lips and you could feel the walls you had built start to break. Sokka had placed his hand under your chin, making you make eye contact with you, “No one”
You let your wall crumble as you wrapped your arms around his neck. He pulled you close to him, a smile spreading on his face as he felt the warmth of your body pressed against him.
You continued to work at the bakery and Sokka continued coming into see, dragging you to see Aang and the rest of the gang almost every afternoon. He helped you clean up after closing. The both of you grew to know each other more and enjoy each other's company. You spent your day off with Katara since Sokka went to go see his dad.
“What do you say, (Y/N). A cup of tea before we get back to the earth king?” Katara said to you.
“Sure” You mumbled
“Table for two,” Katara said before you both spotted him, Prince Zuko serving tea. Your breathing sped up but you were frozen in place. Katara grabbed your hand before running in the opposite direction.
The two of you run before Katara sees someone she recognizes, “Thank goodness, you're here Suki.” she said to three girls in makeup, “Something terrible is going on. The fire nation has infiltrated the city. I saw Prince Zuko and his uncle. We have to tell the earth king right away”
“Oh, don’t worry. I'll be sure to let him know.” A voice you instantly recognized, Azula. You watch as Ty Lee attacks Katara and Mai attacks you before knocking you out.
You woke up next to Katara in a cave full of crystals you both started pacing around before a door opened and a person was thrown in.
“Zuko!” Katara said. You knelt down and attempted to help the prince to his feet.
“(Y/N),” he said, confused but before you could even get a word in Katara spoke. The two had quite the argument. Which was mainly just Katara yelling and making wild accusations as Zuko remained silent. You zoned out and stared at a wall while they yelled at one another or whatever.
You were grateful when Iroh and Aang showed up and you didn't have to hear anymore of it. You, Aang, and Katara went to leave the cave when Azula attacked the three of you. You stood behind them as they used waterbending to defend themselves. Zuko showed up soon after and joined azula in the fight. You and Katara ended up fighting Zuko.
You and Katara were surrounded by the Dai li agents when you saw Aang rise up with glowing eyes and in a matter of seconds you heard as the lighting hit him and he fell to the ground as Katara went to help him.
You stayed behind to help Iroh hold back Zuko and Azula so that Katara could help Aang. The Dai li managed to encapsulate both of you in crystals as Katara and Aang escaped.
“Sorry, Sokka” you muttered under your breath and you and Iroh were arrested.

music tastes of the gaang (+ azula, mai and ty lee)
*all of these r purely my own individual hcs i actually have no idea what they would listen to irl
Aang: Aang says that he listens to a bit of everything, but he actually listens to a bit of everything. Name even the most obscure bands, chances are that he knows them. Does he also listen to really mainstream stuff? absolutely. He does a lot of running and while he's out he has a lot of time to listen to music. he knows it all. Doesn't have a favourite artist
Katara: she listens to a lot of rap, especially from the 90's, but she also cannot stand silence and doesn't want to listen to rap while she studies, so she also listens to a lot of lofi. This results in her spotify being 42,5% rappers rapping about guns and gangs and money and 42,5% being 'Chill Beats To Relax/Study/Sleep to'. The other 5% is from that time that she had a spotify premium free trial and sokka didn't. she let him use her account for a while. likes jpgmafia
Sokka definitely had a phase where he listened to alt rock from the 80s/90s and thought that there was no good music after '94, followed by a phase where he just followed the words of anthony fantano. he now lets himself enjoy more than one genre of music, even though his music is now mostly still punk from the 80's, but he doesn't hate mainstream musix as he did before. fav artist/band is probably germs. also death grips. also maybe misfits? it used to be the smiths but now he hates morissey or however u spell his name with a passion. he still likes their songs but would gladly murk morissey.
Suki: suki will listen to some of the most obscure shot that can barely even be classified as music. and i mean like actually obscure. a lot of it is just random noises with vague ambient music in the background. she isn't like a snob about it or anything and enjoys most of the music her friends play her and the go to playlist maker. to get to where her music taste is now, she's had to listen to a lot of genres and artists (she had a lana del ray is phase), so she might even know more than aang. she does have a couple of playlists that include music that of the overlapping music tastes of the gaang. she absolutely stans charlie xcx and wants to be like her
Toph: Toph will listen to anything to upset her parents. when she was younger her parents would mainly listen to classical music, so when she grew the independence to listen to her own music (ie get a phone) she started listening to a lot of hardcore/death metal. it didn't matter what the songs were, but the more satanic imagery on the album cover the better. except, she doesn't know which album has the most pentagrams or burnt churches on it, so it's usually just whatever her parents make the biggest fuss about. she does enjoy the music after a while, so it's not just to piss her parents off, even if that was the initial intention. her parents stopped bothering her about it after the first year/year and a half. but she was absolutely NOT allowed to wear band t-shirts because then that would embarrass the family. so that's exactly what she did. owns over 10 Korn shirts because she is still, a rich kid
Zuko/Mai: Goth. Again, mostly from the 80's. He mainly listens to more famous goth bands, like the cure, joy division, duo je and the banshees, bauhaus, depeche mode etc. he and mai listen to a lot of music together, and share headphones. they did this a lot when they were 'dating' but they're still doing it now. he likes some newer stuff too though. doesn't have a fav artist but his fav album is three imaginary boys. this really doesn't need more analysis.
Ty Lee: she likes Kpop. sometimes jpop. she listens to music while training, and a lot of Kpop songs help because they're dynamic and easy to follow and listen to. bts, nct, stray kidz, twice, red velvet, black pink etc.
Azula: ozai listened to stuff like frank sinatra and other songs from the 50s, but not 'birth of rocking roll' 50s, more like old conservative 'i-miss-the-fifties-when-women-would-dress-like-women-men-would-dress-like-men-also-literally-no-civil-rights-and-the-birth-of-late-stage-capitalism-yay' type of way. azula of course wants to impress her dad so she listens to what he listens to, because ozai is a narcissist and is only impressed by himself. after she gets a redemption arc however, and she unlearns all the shit he brainwashed her into believing, she analyses everything about their relationship, his political views, and how they affected her, after a lot of thinking instead of being on the right she switches to the (kind of far) left and now she predominantly listens to riot grrrl and joan jett, L7, the runaways, etc.
(can u trop in writing a modern au)

Cop-thing-anon here:
(I don't believe in the blue lives matter thing by the way)
I do get where you're coming from. I guess I see the thing about cops and cop AUs differently because the police is different and not as fucked up in my country. The thing about the fanart is just..I think you're reading too much into it. I don't think the artist really focused on the skin colour of Sokka, I mean, it's a kids show. Skin colour was never really mentioned or important in atla. But Sokka's personality is most likely why the artist was inspired to draw him as a "gangster", with azula (the villain) being a cop. It is kind of insensitive to draw that with the events going on, but I think that a lot of people in the fandom take some things way too seriously, for a kids show back in the late 2000's anyway.
hey anon, I say this with love and I am being sincere. I'm gonna need you to rewatch the show if you think skin color didn't matter. and it doesn't matter where you live because there is no part of the world, no culture, that isn't shaped by colonialism. I don't mean to be condescending so please bear with me, I truly believe in educating people as a part of allyship and anti-racism.
Anon, please know that I am not angry or anything but sincere in what I’m about to say. Just bear with me because I know that unlearning shit is difficult and can be painful, but we’ve gotta do it. I do appreciate you wanting to have this conversation at all. And I’m not writing this just for your benefit - this is for anyone who wants to learn about why A) race is a part of ATLA’s narrative and B) why critical analysis of mass media is actually important. So I’m not assuming you don’t know basic things about this stuff, I’m not trying to be condescending.
Now we’re gonna fix colonialism and imperialism XD wee okay here we go.
No matter where you live in the world you have some awareness of skin color. Your understanding of race might be different than mine, in fact it probably is. Race as we know it today is a social construct that stems from many things (and I wrote several hundred words on it but it was too much and too far removed from the point I’m trying to make so I edited all of that out. Yay.)
You don’t usually see imperialism, one of the major themes in Avatar, without colonialism. Imperialism is slightly different than colonialism - you can think of it like the ideology behind the practice of colonialism.* Imperialism can be used to describe expansionism in general - which has been going on since the bronze age lol humans, I stg - but usually when people today refer to colonialism and imperialism they’re talking about imperialism starting in the 17th century.
Now imperialism is not just a European concept. ATLA is set in a world that we know is supposed to be like a combination of different Asian cultures (with some influences from the Americas). And the Fire Nation is clearly influenced by Imperial Japan. So briefly:
Japan had a policy of sakoku (chained or closed country) which kept it mostly isolated (out of concerns that Japan would fall victim to something like the Opium Wars in China, among other things) from the rest of the world for a couple hundred years until the 1850s when a US Naval commander named Matthew Perry (I am not kidding) forced Japan to open its borders for trade to the United States by gunboat diplomacy, an oxymoron if I have ever seen one before.
Japan ended up signing unequal treaties with a lot of Western countries, and this bred xenophobia and hostility in Japan. The Emperor who signed these treaties died of smallpox, and after some internal conflict his son decided try to renegotiate these treaties. The US and European countries were not interested in renegotiating dick but the mission wasn’t unsuccessful because the diplomats A) exchanged some islands with Russia and B) were inspired by western economic policy and society to “modernize” Japan. Japan began industrialization and it converted to a market economy with the help of the US and other western powers.
So over many years, Japan went to war with China, Korea, Russia (and took back some of the land they exchanged with them), and others. From wikipedia:
Using its superior technological advances in naval aviation and its modern doctrines of amphibious and naval warfare, Japan achieved one of the fastest maritime expansions in history. By 1942 Japan had conquered much of East Asia and the Pacific, including the east of China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma (Myanmar), Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, part of New Guinea and many islands of the Pacific Ocean.
But ATLA is not a Japanese story. The Fire Nation is not Imperial Japan. The Earth Kingdom is not China or Korea, the Air Nomads are not Tibetan monks, and the Water Tribes are not Inuit. The creators definitely drew heavy inspiration from all of these places and others, but ATLA is a story written by American people in the United States for American kids. It is an American story.
And it was created at a time when the United States was victimizing people in Afghanistan and Iraq (and other places) in many similar ways to how the Fire Nation victimized people. In fact, the show starts in the Southern Water Tribe, which represent Inuit people, indigenous people in Alaska, Canada and Greenland, I think it’s safe to assume that the genocide being referenced here is not one by Japan but rather by European colonizers and later by the United States and Canada.
Imperialism is in the show’s DNA.
And so is racism. In our world they are inherently connected. And visual cues from the show along with things the characters say suggest that we are meant to make the comparison between our world and the ATLA world. Every story has a purpose - it doesn’t have to be political, but for Avatar it is political, it is anti-imperialist.
In this article about how ATLA resonates with us in 2020, Aina Khan of the Guardian interviews Professor Ali A Olomi about using ATLA to teach at Penn State. “One of the things we see with the Fire Nation is the ideological justification for what they’re doing. We are a glorious civilization. We have abundance, we have wealth, we have technological advancement; we need to share it with the rest of the world. That’s almost word for word European colonisation.”
Zuko and Azula both call Katara a peasant. In fact, Azula calls her a dirty peasant. This is one step away from calling her a s*vage I mean come on. While peasant might just be purely classist (lol no) because Zuko and Azula are royalty, um it’s clearly racialized classism because of real life context. There is real history with colonizers calling indigenous people this, dismissing their cultures as primitive and barbaric.
Add into the mix colorism, which is bias against darker skin and privileges fair skin (which is a byproduct of imperialism) and you have clear race shit happening in Avatar.
When I saw that fanart, I was immediately reminded of black lives matter of course, but mainly of the fact that indigenous peoples are also at high risk of being victimized by police. Not just in the US. And how gross it is to depict a colonizer like Azula as an angry cop (representing the state) turning her gun on an indigenous man who is dressed like a gangster which... yike.
Mass media influence everything we do. The messaging we get, our politics, what we want to eat for dinner because we’re hungry and have been writing this stupid essay for three hours LOL. It’s important that people think critically about what they consume. Otherwise you get the goddamn United States with half of our population stanning a racist fraud. You want to know why US Americans are so ignorant? Because our education system sucks, because we don’t have any real media literacy. But apparently the rest of the world has some fucking nerve making fun of Americans** because all of us suck at it. No one is thinking critically about media.
A really terrifying thing about people is our ability to take whatever message we want from stories, even if it is in direct contradiction with the narrative of a story. There’s a movie called American History X which is explicitly anti-fascist, but because it’s a drama and Ed Norton is cut and looks badass and uncucked or whatever LOL, the iconography in that movie is fairly popular with neo-nazis. Yike. This is not at that level of course, this is some random niche fanart for a rare pairing.
For better or for worse, US media and entertainment gets a lot of attention and people around the world eat it up. Maybe you don’t need to know every little detail about US American shit, and I know we tend to dominate media, but black lives matter is not just a 2020 thing. People have known about it for years, since it started. If that fanart was created in 2019, which I think it was, the BLM movement had already existed for six years. If you’re watching an American show like Avatar and you’re making fanart on social media but you don’t know what BLM is in 2019... well educate yourself lmao.
Considering that Black fans have expressed frustration and discomfort in fandoms over and over again, and I am sure indigenous fans have too because fandoms are racist sometimes, it’s important that white fans help make fandoms better. And I am a white fan, and I consider myself an anti-racist. Which means I have to be active about racism when I see it.
btw I found this great essay by @cobra-diamond which you should read if you want more details about the similarities between Japan and the Fire Nation.
* that is very reductive but it’s fine lol
** I am kidding, unless you are english feel free to make fun of americans for non-gun, non-trauma related things pls
