Winner Takes All (Caroline Graham Hansen x Reader ficlet)

"Good luck today, baby! I know you're going to win this. " You stretched your legs out on the hotel bed, looking out the window at Sydney.

"Are you going to be able to watch, at least?" Caroline asked. You could hear the disappointment in her voice that you weren't there.

"Of course, love. Training should be done by then and they're going to let us stay here and watch the game in the conference room." You'd told Caroline that the trainers at Barcelona wouldn't give you the time off to go watch the World Cup final in person. The only reason you weren't with the team playing today was because you'd injured yourself a month before the tournament began and you were only now just getting back to training.

"Okay, well, I'm glad you can at least watch."

"You know I'd be there if I could be, right?"

"Yeah, I know."

"Okay. Go get the girls ready, captain. I can't wait to see you lift that trophy. I love you."

"I love you. I'll call you afterwards. Bye, babe."

"Good luck." You tossed your phone on the bed next to you and scootched off. You were meeting up with Caroline's family soon and you needed to get ready. You ran a hand over the name on the jersey laying on the bed. You'd never worn a Graham jersey in public before. But today felt like the right day. Checking your watch, you cursed yourself for talking to her for so long. You were definitely going to be late. You quickly changed your clothes and rushed out of the hotel.

You were amazed by the crowd when you walked into the stadium. Almost every seat was filled. You'd met with Caroline's parents outside but decided to wait going to your seat until it was nearly game time. Caroline often stopped to wave at her parents before heading into the locker room after warm ups. And you didn't want to risk ruining the surprise.

Just before kickoff, you made your way down to Caroline's family. You hugged some of the other girls' parents you knew and took your seat. Watching her walk out with the captain's armband on filled you with pride. She had proven herself as a leader when she flew to Canada and begged Coach Nelson to come to Norway. He had made all the difference for this team. It was one reason you were extremely sad to miss this World Cup. You always missed your time playing football but being able to see Caroline lead the team to this final was a huge moment that you had missed.

You watched the game on the edge of your seat. Caroline had that look on her face when she went in for the half. She was in her head. She was likely replaying key missed opportunities from the first half, trying to figure out how to improve for the second half. You took out your phone, shooting a quick text to her. Sometimes she checked her phone, sometimes she didn’t. You knew she didn't need the text to get herself ready for the second half, but you hoped maybe it would help a little.

Not twenty minutes into the second half, Maren scored and you were on your feet, screaming your head off. Caroline looked over to catch her dad's eye and saw you. And the little girl next to you. She stumbled coming out of the team celebration. Giggling to yourself, you blew her a kiss.

When the last five minutes hit, you were clutching her mom's hand. Japan scored in the 90th minute and you groaned to yourself. But then you heard cheers and looked up. The offside flag had come up. The VAR check on it seemed to last for hours. When nothing came from it, you jumped to your feet screaming. The girls just needed to hold on through injury time and that star would be theirs.

Four minutes of injury time. Four minutes of both teams fighting like hell for a goal. Norway to solidify their win. Japan to keep themselves in the game. Neither achieving their goal.

The final whistle brought a chill straight through your entire body. They'd won the World Cup. After everything they had been through. Despite everything they had been through. You hugged everyone around you. There were more than a few tears falling in the family section. You wished you could be down there celebrating with them. But this time you had to sit back and let your girl have her moment with her team.

And they did. They excitedly danced around the field, jumping in the piles of confetti and throwing it at each other. You were busy watching Guru dance with Ingrid that you missed Maren point towards you and Caroline run towards the stands. Her dad nudged you when Caroline tried to get your attention unsuccessfully. You looked down at her.

"Pass me the kid!" she yelled.

You helped Maria climb over the wall and down to Caroline. Everyone near them heard the yelled "Mama!" that she let out when Caroline swung her around. A few heads turned to look as Caroline showered the girl's face in kisses. She set her down on the grass and whispered something in her ear. Maria nodded and smiled up at her.

Caroline got closer to the wall again. She hugged her parents and then crooked her finger at you, telling you to come down towards the railing.

"Congratulations!" you said, stopping in front of her.

"Come closer," she said. You leaned down towards her, expecting a hug or something. You were not expecting her to grab the back of your neck and kiss you. Neither of you were shy about your relationship but you also both enjoyed your privacy. The kiss was hard and salty and over before it really began. You hugged her tightly, well as tightly as you could with the wall between you. She barely pulled away from you before she grabbed you by the hips and tossed you over her shoulder. The scream you let out must have been heard around the stadium. She tapped your butt and took off running, telling Maria to keep up.

"Put me down! I'm gonna kill you!" But she didn't put you down. Not until she reached the other girls. You smacked her shoulder as soon as your feet hit the grass. "You could've just asked me to come down."

"Security," Maren said simply, shrugging. The huge grin she gave you indicated that the idea had been hers. You yanked her into a hug.

"Congratulations, vennen." Just as you went to step back, you felt a huge spray hit the center of your back and you ducked hoping to avoid more. Your Barcelona teammate, Ingrid, followed you as you ran. Screaming, you ran behind Caroline, using her as a shield.

"What are you wearing?" Caroline asked, shoving Ingrid away before she could spray the both of you with more water. "Turn around." She pushed your shoulder until you turned. "Babe," she whispered. You felt her run a hand over the letters of her last name.

"I wanted to wear something special for you," you said, turning your head to look at her over your shoulder. She melted into you, wrapping her arms tightly around your waist and burying her head in the curve of your neck.

"You look good with my name on your back," she whispered into your neck.

You felt little arms wrap around your waist and looked down to see Maria holding onto both of you. Picking her up, you moved into Caroline's space so Maria could wrap her short arm around both of your necks.

"I love you," Caroline said, kissing her cheek. "And I love you," she said to you.

"Sorry to break this up, but they're calling us," Ingrid said. "It's time for the awards."

"Go," you said. You put a hand on Caroline's cheek and kissed her softly. "We'll be here waiting when you get back." You watched her walk away, pride swelling inside you. You and Maria moved off to the side to watch the awards ceremony. Maria cheered loudly, clapping her little hands when Caroline lifted the trophy.

You patiently waited for Caroline to enjoy the celebration. A few of your teammates had spotted you and come over to give you and Maria hugs. You were talking with Guru when Maria started wiggling in your arms and trying to get down. You set her down and watched her take off across the field. Worried, you tried to keep an eye on her while Guru continued talking one hundred miles an hour.

Maria ran right to Caroline, who was talking to Ada. Ada smiled down at the girl and ran a hand through her hair. You could see her say a few words to her before turning to leave them alone. Caroline sat down on the grass and pulled Maria into her lap to show off her medal.

You excused yourself from Guru and walked over to them slowly, taking in the scene in front of you. Caroline took her medal off and put it around Maria's neck, bringing an even bigger smile to her face. You watched Maria show the medal off and Caroline take in everything she said with great interest. This was the most important moment her career, and she was choosing to spend it with your daughter. Stopping, you kneeled down next to Caroline's outstretched legs.

"Marry me," you said suddenly, putting your hand on her knee.

"What?" she gasped, looking up at you.

"Marry me," you said again. "I want your name to always be the name on my back."

"Y/N," she whispered. "Are you sure?"

"Idiot. Of course. I want you to officially be Maria's mama." You saw her arm tighten around the child. You leaned into her leg. "So? Just going to leave me hanging here?"

"No. No, I mean, yes!"

You giggled nervously. "Is that a no or a yes?"

"Yes!" She leaned forward to wrap her free arm around you. You locked your arms around her neck, holding her to you. "I love you."

"We love you, superstar."

"Mommy, look!" Maria yelled, not paying attention to anything her parents were saying. "I'm a winner!" She held out the medal around her neck.

You pulled back from Caroline enough to see Maria. "We all won today," you said smiling. Caroline kissed your cheek as you ran a hand through Maria's curls.

"We all won everything today," she said, breathing out a sigh into your neck. "I won everything today."

Crew change Please change your fishing boat crew every season and you will be lucky.

Cross A small wooden cross around the neck was a from of divine protection. The Spanish and Portuguese even had crosses on their sails to protect their ships.

Fly For sailors from Greenock, Scotland, it was a good omen if a fly fell into the glass from which the man was about to drink.

Garlic In Greece and Turkey it was common to wrap a bunch of garlic around the rails to protect the ship from storms. Medieval England, the Netherlands and France, on the other hand, banned garlic and onions on board because they were said to affect the lodestone or compass.

Storm songs It needs some wind ? don't worry just sing Ghostly Sailor or Young Charlotte and the weather will turn against you and call for a storm.

Good luck charms Sailors are notoriuos for carrying good luck charms or totems. Some of the more common ones are carved horns (England, Norway, Denmark); pieces of slate (America, Sweden, Scotland); small sugared skulls (Mexico); horse figurines (China); dried apples (England); animal and human ashes (Africa); wooden carvings of geese (Ireland); carved figurines of saints (France, Spain, Portugal, Italy); bat wings (Europe, America); bone fragments (America, Canada, Japan); otter skin (Shetland Islands); and the right front paw of a seal (Scotland)

Michigan Mitten Great Lakes sailors were once fearful of sailing on an inverted U-shaped voyage, something that happens when a trip is planned around a peninsula. This mitten shape occurs, for instance, on a route from Toledo, Ohio, to Chicago or between Detroit and Milwaukee. The reason behind this may have been that the inverted U resembles an upside- down horseshoe, which is a very unlucky symbol.

Col. Cobb’s fired on by a Mig 25

Operational missions.

First let me assure you; we never broke President Eisenhower's promise to cease overflying the Soviet Union. We remained over international water - 12 mi offshore.

All of my operational flying was from Kadena, Okinawa. Area of interest was Vietnam; Korea; Vladivostok, USSR; China. Later, we flew transatlantic & return from Seymour Johnson, NC supporting the Israel Arab war. After I left the program, the SR flew from Mildenhall, England & Bodo, Norway.

We already touched on missions against Vietnam & the only night mission.

Today let's cover "north missions".

Take off, refuel & head into the Sea of Japan; between Japan & south Korea. Accelerated to operational speed - 3.20. Head directly at Vladivostok. headquarters of USSR air defense; and test/r & d of new radar & intercept development. 2200 mph guaranteed to light up all the radar & intercept systems they had.

A Mig-25 interceptor squadron was based just outside of Vladivostok the "holy grail" of the soviet air defense system was to shoot down an SR71.

Turn north up the Sea of Japan & make a U-turn back down the USSR coast (12 mi offshore) with ELINT & SIGINT recorders going full bore. Photo cameras looking oblique into the USSR , updating the interceptor air order of battle. Head south east till past Vladivostok then turn slightly left then right to cross Korea at the DMZ. Photo cameras updating N. Korea force readiness to resume hostilities against S. Korea.

Continue down the yellow sea coast of China. All sensors evaluating China's threat to Taiwan. Turn left- decell & land at Kadena. I flew this profile several times during the 4 years i flew ops missions. One of these got very, very thrilling. Southbound, passing Vladivostok, Reg (my RSO) announced

"We've got a fighter locked on - it's gotta be a Mig-25"

"Our DEF is blanketing all beautifully."

"Oops - he just fired - - we've got a missile locked on"

"Our def has shifted to its missile magic"

"There - lock's broken. Missile's back in search”

"That's weird - sounds like the missile's locked on - but not locked on us"

"he's gone - coming up on the "s" turn to the DMZ".

Fast forward to late 1976 Col.Cobb retired from the Air Force.

I'm retired! Learning that retirement means no days off; no vacation; no holidays; big pay cut.

I find the aircraft TV channel & history channel. Lots & lots of SR71 films. I avidly watch at every opportunity. In my den, glued to the TV & today's SR71 show, & who do I see comparing the mig-25 with the SR71??

You're right - - Lt Victor Belenko!

He was totally gobsmaked; his Mig-25 burned up the engines getting to Mach 3 yet the SR's cruise speed was greater than 3.0.

He's the one who said that the Holy Grail of soviet air defense was to shoot down an SR.

He told of how they would pre-position ahead of the SR's radar track and had to zoom up to get a lock on & fire their missile.

He stressed how quickly & precisely they had to perform because the window of opportunity was so very short.

Their target was traveling at 3600 ft/sec. Faster than a speeding bullet.

He described in detail how precise the post firing breakaway had to be executed to avoid getting shot down by their own missile; talking as though they found this out the "hard way".

Man talk about intense attention - - I'm quickly mentally replaying that tape from the inter-phone - -

Mappa Mundi: The Greatest Medieval Map In The World

From a small island in the Venetian lagoon, a 15th-Century monk somehow designed an astonishingly accurate planisphere of the world.

On the second floor of the Library of Saint Mark in Venice, a map of the world occupies an entire room – and rightfully so, considering its historical significance and imposing size (2.4m x 2.4m, bigger than a king size bed). Completed in 1459, the Mappa Mundi is the compendium of all the geographical knowledge of the time and is arguably the greatest medieval map of the world.

Almost twice as large as the famous English Hereford Mappa Mundi (ca 1300), this exquisitely decorated planisphere showcasing Europe, Africa and Asia was the masterpiece of Fra Mauro, a monk of the Camaldolese order who lived on the small Venetian island of San Michele.

Although the monk never set foot outside Venice, his Mappa Mundi is amazingly accurate in its depiction of cities, provinces, continents, rivers and mountains. America isn't on the map, since Christopher Columbus would take his trip across the ocean 33 years later; and nor is Australia. But Japan (or in Fra Mauro's words, "Cipango") is there, making its first appearance on a Western chart. Even more surprisingly, Africa is correctly drawn as circumnavigable, long before the Portuguese rounded the Cape of Good Hope in 1488.

"It's the oldest surviving medieval map," said Meredith Francesca Small, author of the book Here Begins the Dark Sea, also describing it as the most complete medieval map to survive into modernity. "It's the first map to be based on science more than religion. The Hereford map is all propaganda, religious propaganda."

While the Hereford map depicted Heaven and Hell and was designed to serve as a compendium of the world's knowledge from a spiritual perspective, Fra Mauro took a scientific approach to his cartography. He declared in his inscriptions that he would "verify the text by practical experience, investigating for many years and frequenting personas worthy of faith who have seen with their own eyes what I faithfully report here".

There's more than scientific and historical relevance to it, though. The most striking aspect of the map, which immediately catches your eye after ascending the white marble stairs of the Library of Saint Mark, where some of the world's most precious and ancient manuscripts are kept, is its sheer splendour.

"It's huge, beautiful, fantastically crafted," said historian Pieralvise Zorzi. Beyond the outlines of countries and continents, Fra Mauro's Mappa Mundi is a magnificent golden and blue painting composed of minute drawings of gorgeous palaces, bridges, sailing ships, rolling blue waves and outsized sea creatures, plus a total of 3,000 cartigli – red and blue annotations written in ancient Venetian that tell stories, anecdotes and legends.

In Norway, for instance, a cartiglio indicates the location where the Venetian merchant Pietro Querini came ashore after a shipwreck. As the tale goes, he not only survived the accident, but he brought stockfish back home, thus starting the Venetian passion for baccalà (the creamy fish spread you can find in every osteria).

Another cartiglioindicates Tharse, the "kingdom where the Magi came from", then thought to be located somewhere between China and Mongolia.

All these annotations are legible on the map, and are relatively easy to decipher for Venetian speakers since the current dialect is not dramatically different from the idiom of the 15th Century. However, the inscriptions are also translated into English on an interactive map created by the Galileo Institute and Museum in Florence. Displayed on a flat screen in the same exhibition space as the Mappa Mundi, it provides the somewhat peculiar experience of entering the mind of a savant monk and reading the world through his medieval eyes.

It was not a small world. Although Fra Mauro lived his entire life in his island monastery in the lagoon backwaters, he tapped into the knowledge of travellers and merchants who crossed paths in the flourishing trading city of Venice that was "the capital of cartography at the time", explained Saint Marks librarian Margherita Venturelli.

Fra Mauro's main source for Asia was merchant and fellow Venetian Marco Polo, who had published his travel accounts more than 150 years earlier. On the map, 150 locations are directly traceable to Marco Polo's Travels; for instance, the Mount of Adam was placed in the island of Ceylon (today's Sri Lanka), where, according to legends recounted by Polo, the first man's body was believed to be buried, together with his teeth and even his bowl, which was supposed to have the magical property of multiplying food.

Besides Polo, Fra Mauro had numerous sources around the globe. The fact that the chart looks upside down to contemporary Western eyes, with the south on top, might indicate that he was inspired by Arab cartography, like a 12th-Century map by North African geographer Muhammad al-Idrisi. The numbers that Fra Mauro lists as "the Distance of Heavens" are from mathematician and astronomer Campanus de Novara. "From the centre of the world to the surface of the Earth there are 3,245 miles. From the centre of the world to the lower surface of the heavens of the Moon there are 107,936 miles," and so on, he writes in the top left corner of the Mappa Mundi.

Fra Mauro also displayed a healthy scepticism and wasn't shy of criticising – as well as sometimes using –the revered Ptolemy's Geography, a treaty written in Alexandria, Egypt, by Claudius Ptolemy in 150 CE and lost for centuries to the Western world until it was rediscovered and translated in Latin again in the 1400s.

This Renaissance rationalist attitude also showed in the way he placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden outside of the planisphere, making it clear that Heaven is not a place on Earth; a statement that separated religion and geography and was forward thinking for any medieval man, let alone a monk.

These novelties, and the fact that the map was completed few decades before Christopher Columbus sailed to America, contribute to Fra Mauro's Mappa Mundi being considered the geographical link between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. To contemporary visitors, his map is a reminder of the fact that maps were once not only practical tools, but also a matter of beauty – and a way to tell the most extraordinary stories.

She doesn't need as much blood to survive as a regular vampire does

After that first feeding she was able to control everything so much better

She never went into that frenzy again

And she has not let me either

The door opens and she comes back inside

Closing the door, she comes closer to me, pulling out a blood bag from under her shirt

"Joong scored. He knows what happened to you but I fended him off. He's gonna wait until morning to hassle you"

Smiling at her, I nod, "Thanks jagi"

She sits, handing me the blood bag

Taking it, I bite into it, drinking the blood

Whoever invented the blood bag was a genius

She smiles, shaking her head, "I'm good. I was able to finish feeding. The bag is for you"

"You need it baby", she says softly, looking at me, "You need it to heal"

"Drink baby. Then you should rest. Sleep for a little"

"Are you gonna stay with me?"

"Of course Hwa. Always"

She smiles, then gets up

As I drink the blood, I watch her change, putting on one of my shirts and just leaving her underwear on

She climbs in the bed next to me, just as I finish the blood bag

I quickly get undressed, staying just in my boxers

As we lay down, she comes right into my arms, clinging to me tightly

"Promise me you'll be more careful Hwa. I can't live without you", she whispers

"I promise Jo. I'll be extra careful", I promise her

She nods, pressing a soft kiss to my lips, "Night Hwa. I love you so much baby"

"I love you Jo", I murmur, playing with her hair and softly kiss her forehead

Settling down, I hold my love in my arms and fall asleep

Movement wakes me up and I'm on alert right away

Looking down, Joanne is shaking, soft whimpers coming from her mouth

We moved during our sleep and now her back is to me, against my chest, my arm around her

Lifting my head, I peer over her

Her eyes are closed

She's dreaming

Or more accurately, having a nightmare

"Jagi", I whisper, shaking her shoulder softly, "Jagi, wake up"

Her eyes snap open and are on me in a second

"Seonghwa", she cries, turning to me

"I'm here baby. I'm right here", I assure her

She bursts into tears, hugging me tightly, her face buried in my neck

"Seonghwa"

"Shh baby", I say, running my fingers in her hair, "It's ok baby"

She shakes her head, "She killed you. The slayer killed you. I couldn't stop her"

"It was a nightmare jagi. You did stop her. You saved me baby. I'm here with you. I'm here", I tell her

"It was so real", she sobs

"It's not baby. This is real. I'm here with you in bed. Hugging you, holding you. I'm not dead"

"Don't leave me Seonghwa. Please don't ever leave me", she begs

"I won't baby. I'm staying with you. Forever. We're staying together forever. No matter where we are ok?"

"What...what does that mean Hwa?", she asks, pulling away and looking in my eyes

"It means I can't live without you either jagi. If....if anything happens to you....ever.....I'm following you"

"You mean...."

"I'll stake myself and we'll be together wherever we end up. I'm never leaving you. I promise"

She nods, "I'd do the same if I ever lost you"

"Jagi, you're too important to-"

"No. Where you go I do. Whenever we're alive or dead. I'm staying with you"

I just nod

I can't tell her not to do something, I would do myself

"We're both here now jagi. It was just a nightmare ok?"

She nods, "Ok"

Ukraine should receive its first F-16 from Denmark still in the first half of 2024

Ukrainian pilots are currently training in Danish airspace on Danish F-16 aircraft.

The Danish Armed Forces are preparing the donation of their first F-16 combat jets to Ukraine, which are expected to be delivered later this semester to the Ukrainian Air Force, no later than July.

This was announced during a meeting between the Minister of Defense, Troels Lund Poulsen, and his Belgian ministerial colleague, Ludivine Dedonder, in the Hunting Wing in Skrydstrup on March 18. The two ministers discussed cooperation with the F-16 and participated in training sessions with Ukrainian pilots.

The training of Ukrainian pilots and support personnel at Flyvestation Skrydstrup is taking place within the framework of the international air force coalition. Denmark leads the coalition together with the US and the Netherlands, which was created last year and has 16 member countries. Belgium, as a member of the coalition, contributes with F-16 aircraft and instructors to Denmark's training efforts.

“The training of Ukrainian personnel is progressing well and I am proud that Ukrainian pilots are training in Danish airspace on Danish F-16 aircraft. The progress of training is largely due to the invaluable contributions of countries such as Belgium, Norway and Canada "We have exemplary cooperation in the coalition. I spent the day in Skrydstrup participating in a very fruitful discussion about the cooperation of the F-16 with my Belgian ministerial colleague," said Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.

The objective of the training is to ensure that the Ukrainian Air Force has the best possible conditions to operate, serve and maintain the F-16 fighters donated by Denmark and other allies. As part of the international effort to support Ukraine, the first F-16 training modules are now part of the EU military training mission to help Ukraine. This is crucial to coordinate the global European effort in Ukraine.

“The total contribution of the fighters coalition countries sends an important signal about the unity behind the support for Ukraine. The donation of aircraft and the training of pilots are decisive and highly valuable contributions to Ukraine in its struggle, which we must continue to fight in support both for the good of Ukraine and for the good of Europe," said Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.
