I am loving the fall colors of Northern Michigan right now. So many vibrant yellows, fire oranges, and various shades of red. And the contrast with the green of the pines makes them pop even more.
Below pic is from local FB group, and was taken 45 minutes from where I live.
Tumblr media
Next pic I took on the drive home, and is less than 5 minutes from my house. Phone pics don't do it justice.

I went hunting this Thanksgiving weekend, and my father and I came across a Norther Bobwhite. These birds are not meant to be in the upper peninsula of Michigan as far as I and the internet know.
Tumblr media
Apparently, it's a type of quail. I have no idea why it was here, but it came right up to us and just kinda sat there. Might have been asking for help??? I don't know what I should have done, but I do know walking away probably was not what I should have done.

Political blight
More than 7 months after the 2020 presidential election, all the pro-Biden signs are gone from this side of the North Country, but many Trump signs, like this one in the window of a gas station just outside of Cheboygan, continue to disfigure the landscape.
The signs remind me of the people still fighting the civil war.
For the life of me, I still can’t understand, a) why anybody would think our country was better off with Trump in office and, b) why anybody would be proud to have voted for a mad man.

Located along the Lake Superior shoreline in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Red Harbor is a place unlike any other. Keep reading for a short breakdown of each of the thirteen Islands.
RED HARBOR
Red Harbor spans the coast along Lake Superior from Bright Point Peninsula to Boiling Bay, and shares the most of the local population of the area with that of Fallen Oak Island. Downtown Red Harbor has several local-run shops and a couple of bars as well as the town hall, local library, and police department. Near the waterside you'll find the docks, where you can hitch a ride out to the farther islands if you're willing to pay, or gamble away your daily wage.
FALLEN OAK ISLAND
Located just south of the Rift and east of mainland Red Harbor, Fallen Oak Island is one of main population centers of the islands, and the only one accessible by vehicle via the Byway Bridge. The boardwalk and tourist strip is located here, as well as multiple businesses, beachside cottages, and rentals. While most of the trees have been clear cut to make room for development, a few acres of intact forest remain. The northernmost coast of the island consists of marshes and herbaceous wetlands which are heavily protected by the local government and the Ojibwe.
WOLFE ISLAND
Located nearly five miles outside of Boiling Bay, Wolfe Island once was one of the most visited islands in the area due to its large forested bogs and swamps. But after the construction of both the Byway Bridge connecting Red Harbor to Fallen Oak and the foot bridge connecting Fallen Oak to Madeline tourism on Wolfe has waned dramatically. Don't mention that to the locals, though. There is no vehicular traffic on Wolfe Island, and your only options off the island are to take the ferry or to own your own boat – or know someone willing to share.
MADELINE ISLAND
So named after 'Mad' Madeline Callaway, who threw herself into the stormy waves of the lake after claiming an ancient spirit was haunting her, the island is mainly forested wetlands, marsh, and bogs, and due to the erosion and unstable soils, remains largely undeveloped besides the docks at the southern reach of the island and a small cluster of facilities surrounding it. A tall, wooden walkway was built around the entire island only recently, and has proven to be a big draw to both tourists and locals for the stellar lakeside views.
HEART ISLAND
A favorite with tourists and locals alike, Heart Island is named for the swaths of red, purple, and pink wildflowers that bloom all across the island from spring to summer. The historic Scarcliff Hotel sits on the norther coast and boasts horse-riding and hiking tours of the beautiful beach and forrest trails. Heart Island is federally protected land, therefore further construction or building is prohibited, and locals have fought to keep it that way. Back country camping is allowed by permit, but people can be expected to be leveled with a hefty fine for if they disturb the local wildlife.
DEER ISLAND
This island has no human inhabitants, but hosts a large population of white-tailed deer that are now genetically split from the mainland populations. There are rumors of tunnels beneath the island, but outside of back country camping, seasonal hunting, and the occasional thrill-seeker, Deer Island's distance from Red Harbor keeps all but the most devoted at bay.
OUTER ISLAND
Outer Island is small, barely big enough to encompass the historical building that sits atop it. Pine trees obscure the building from view, and tall cliffs make landing anywhere but the docks a dangerous affair. Most people tend to leave the island be, given its infamous history, but lately sightings of strange figures between the trees have caught the attention of some curious locals.
THE NORTH ISLANDS
The North Islands, also known as The Seven Sisters, all average just under 1 square mile of generally intact woodlands. The Seven Sisters are about 15 miles out from the inner six islands, and are all only accessible by boat traffic as there are no roads on the islands. The Seven Sisters are some of the most popular islands for hiking and camping, as they feel very remote. One famous tourist draw is traversing The Seven Sisters in seven nights – but if you're up for the challenge you better have a kayak and pack a reliable pair of boots.

12 - Tell me three things about one of your hyperfixations
OKAY HOCKEY.
So I play, and I am out on the ice whenever I can. this is as I have said before a 5-6 day a week thing for me. When I am not playing I am watching old games or listening to them. My moms parents, when they came to the US, settled in a place called Copper Harbor Michigan. Its a small town in the most norther part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. 45 minute south is Houghton Michigan which is called the birthplace of professional hockey! It is also where I learned to skate, play, and shot my first game with a hat trick. I started playing at 4 years old and while I also LOVE figure skating for fun, nothing quite beats saucin’ a biscuit in the net. (biscuit being a puck, not a rock solid burnt baked good). Calumet Michigan, the school i first played for, is home to the worlds OLDEST indoor hockey rink, called the Calumet Colosseum! It is still used to this day for the towns Youth and High school hockey. I go up multiple times a year and its one of my favorite places.m

Monster Lover from the Norther US. We have a lot of monsters like the Michigan dog man, Big foot, the Jerzy Devil, wendigos, chupacabras, Dover Demons, Adlets, Trump, skinwalkers The Mothman, the Thunderbird...just to name a few. A whole bunch of them.
Hah, the Mothman! The fluffy, red-eyed boi! ❤️ I’ve read of the Dover Demon and I was already thinking of writing about a Thunderbird but like Howl style, you know,  feathered humanoid who probably shoots bolts of lightning as he comes :D
Tumblr media
That Trump monster doesn’t seem nice. Definitely not fuckable.

So my little big city: #^?*€town, Down South aka Dirty South aka South €@€£@lackey!!!
It seems it’s full of people who will smile in your face and stab you in the back! I call it the southern fuck you! It’s way worse than the “bless her/his/their heart” that you’ll hear spoken about someone who clearly is an idiot or does something in a way they don’t agree with. They’ll even say it to your face!!!!
I used to call “ bless your heart”(in a twangy, southern, sappy sweet tone!!!) the southern fuck you when I first crossed the Mason Dixon line to live as a newly settled Southern woman! I’d always done the iconic Southern Lady ala’ Scarket O’Hara accent awhile playing various childhood games with my siblings, cousins and neighbors. Ok, and I did a variety of English accents too from cockney to palatial! It drove my brother insane!!!! He’d always say, “DON’T Do the accent!!!!!!”
However, I’ve been “down South” for some time now! It’s been almost 20 years!!!! Over a decade has been spent in the Colonial, cobblestoned, flooded town overrun with northers (Yankees, I cringe, even as I write it!) that love to tell everyone how “they do it” where they’re from! Well, if it’s so great, why did they leave to come here???? I mean, I know they’re technically “ my people” but I left for a reason! I like the cheery, laid back disposition of the locals and natives whose families have been here since James Island was farm lands, down town is where most people lived, Folly Beach was the fun place to visit and vacation and over priced Daniel island wasn’t even a thought yet! Then somehow, it became overrun with some many people from mostly the North. I never even met someone from Michigan or Ohio until I moved here. Now, they are everywhere! And dint think I don’t notice or am acknowledging the traditional “Yankees” from NY, PA, NJ, DE and MD! They’re not all bad and they get to keep the the title northerner if they’re not a snobby, stuck up, know it all prick, who is brash and loud! I was told that if you stay your a “Damn Yankee”, lol! Well, they are. I’m thrilled to have been told I’m not like thrm and I’ve been accepted into the community here.
I moved here with a native!
My husband was born here and so is my son!
It’s time to move on…. Maybe one day I'll live on a river! If I could afford it....it would be a giant houseboat. For now, I'll stay in my temp home until we find a
place...✌🏼

The brewery is back and so is George
Have you seen this man before ... ? If not, chances are you’ve quenched your thirst at the Cheboygan Brewing Co.
He’s our our Up North neighbor, and a fine neighbor he is. George is also the unofficial mayor of the brewery. He’s even got his own designated stool, from which he dispenses his goodwill.
The business opened in 2011 and George - a native Cheboyganer and year-round resident - has been its most faithful patron and biggest booster all along.
So, guess who missed it the most ... ? And guess who was the first in line when the brewery - closed for the past two months under the pandemic lockdown - reopened Friday ...?
You guessed it; and does George not look happy ...?

Last Saturday night was the Grand Vally State University Lakers football game against the Norther Michigan University Wildcats. We left Northern's campus on tuesday and arrived to our hotels at 11:30 at night. The next day we traveled to 3 high schools around the area and performed for their marching band. The next day, we got prepared for the GVSU game by practicing with their band and watched their pregame. Pictured in this photo is me giving a thumbs up around the start of the 4th quarter, the stands were empty because the weather at the game was very rainy. Ironically this was Grand Vally's homecoming, and you'd think there would still be more students who would show up. This show was special because it featured a combined Marching band performance by both the NMU band and the GVSU band, along with GVSU alumni band and a bagpipe band, almost simmilar to a combined band performance that UofM and MSU did a few weeks prior. It featured many European themed songs like River Dance, Mars, Scottland the brave, and amazing grace. It was the first time I experienced being in a band that large, and the music sounded incredible. But it wasnt just on the field. We played music together in the stands and had a great time being there. When the wildcats had the ball, we played our music and when the Lakers had the ball, their band played their music. We had a few hecklers that tried to mess with us, but those were just people who wanted to stir up shit for no reason, but none of us let them get to us because we're better than that. While the Wildcats lost the game 28-3 (and that doesn't surprise anyone), the Wildcat marcing band never loses a half time performance.

Mesoscale Discussion for McHenry Co., IL
<pre>ACUS11 KWNS 272318 SWOMCD Mesoscale Discussion 1278 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0617 PM CDT Thu Jun 27 2019 Areas affected...eastern Wisconsin...northeast Illinois...southwest Michigan...northwest Indiana Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 455... Valid 272317Z - 280115Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 455 continues. SUMMARY...The severe threat continues across eastern portions of WW455 in far eastern Wisconsin and northeast Illinois with severe wind as the primary threat. Strong/severe storms may move out of the watch across portions of eastern Lake Michigan, southwest Michigan, northeast Illinois, and northwest Indiana. DISCUSSION...A line of thunderstorms capable of producing severe wind continues to move eastward across far eastern Wisconsin and northeast Illinois. Norther portions of the line are beginning to weaken as storms encounter weaker instability while the southern portion continues to develop new storms amid MLCAPE of 1500-2000 J/kg. These storms will likely continue until sunset taking advantage of the insolation driven instability and steep low-level lapse rates in the area. The low-level jet will be stronger farther west, which will limit the ability for the storms to continue into the evening across this area. However, the southern part of the line will likely continue to be strong/severe across southern Lake Michigan and northeast Illinois and may move into portions of southwest Michigan and northwest Indiana later this evening. Convective trends will continued to be monitored for a possible watch expansion/extension or if a new watch may be needed. ..Nauslar/Guyer.. 06/27/2019 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product...
